history
This year, 2011 would have been the 75th anniversary of Malden being granted Borough status. The independence we had been given by Edward VIII in 1936 was taken away by the government on April Fool’s Day in 1965. But four years earlier, we had the opportunity to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Borough Charter.
Going out with a bang by Robin Gill
Those “in the know” were well aware that the Borough Of Malden was destined not to last much longer in its present form. Some hoped that the area would remain part of the county of Surrey, but the likelihood was that it would become part of the LCC (London County Council). So it was decided to make the celebration an event to remember, and a budget of £1000 was dedicated to all the functions. Achievements September 23rd 1961 was designated “Charter Day”. In the 25 years since the charter had been granted the area had seen many new buildings including seven new schools ; four primary [Brook, Clarence Avenue,Kingsnympton, and Robin Hood],two secondary[Coombe and Richard Challoner],
and one mixed junior/infants [Malden Manor]). The borough had a new library unusually built during the war, and in 1956 the pavilion in Manor Park was completed. The same year also saw the introduction of a roundabout at the Fountain crossroads, easing the traffic problems which had built up. In 1961 the new railway bridge next to the station was opened, and at the same time, the road there was widened. Malden had also seen considerable suffering during the war both in property, and more importantly in lives lost. The lack of available land had forced the council to build upwards to try to accommodate those that wanted to live in the area. Whilst Malden was promised modern structures, some felt that their “village” would never be the same again. Malden could be proud of its youth organisations, the envy of the rest of Surrey, and there were many clubs for those of more advanced years. All these factors had to be incorporated in the events to take place from 23rd -30th September. Weeks’ events For the whole week at the library in Kingston Road there was an exhibition promoting “Malden Past and Present” involving records, maps, prints, and photographs arranged by Malden Camera Club and the Borough Librarian Hilda Jennings. Also carrying on throughout the week was a funfair at the recreation ground in Kingston Road. The Council also wanted to show how the ratepayers money was spent, and organised an exhibition at the council offices entitled “The Council and other rate borne services at work” which was also open all week. Surprisingly, this proved very popular with the public; who after viewing various council and civil defence vehicles in the council yard behind the offices could then move inside the building. Here, they could view the robes of office, chains and regalia, and of course the Charter. In the next room, graphs showed the decline in infectious diseases over the years. On show were live specimens of household pests, in an exhibition of cleanliness in the home. Then there were the live rats, together with the various types of traps that the council used. The next room illustrated how it was hoped that Malden would become a smoke free borough.Thirteen smoke control areas were already planned, and these were combined with mobile displays from the Electricity and Gas Boards illustrating smokeless fuel. u

council offices. The unit was in operation on Mon Weds and Fri from 9.30am-5pm and Tuesday/Thursday afternoons until 8pm. At other times it would opened purely for the public to look around. The offices of the council were floodlit in the evening, and retailers were encouraged by the local Chamber Of commerce to take part in a window display competition. Some local firms such as Adams and Adams in Dickerage Lane, and the Wayne Kerr Laboratories in Sycamore Grove, made arrangements for the public to be given guided tours of their premises, and there were conducted trips around the Sub-Station in Dukes Avenue.
continued from page 8
Council improvement grants and the help they give were illustrated by mock ups of two rooms; one a slum and another with a fully fitted kitchen and bathroom. Next was the planning department which illustrated with drawings and models of what was proposed for the local area, in particular the station area, and Blagdon Road. Also on show was the first drawing of the proposed new railway bridge at Worcester Park. New street lighting and the growth in population were also illustrated. The Civil Defence showed photographs of wartime bomb damage, and the police showed how best to protect yourself against crime. The next door fire station had been open to the public all week, as had the ambulance station in Wellington Crescent, and inspections of the vehicles were welcomed.
On the first Saturday there was a special council meeting held with addresses by various dignitaries including a former Lord Mayor Sir Noel Vansittart Bowater. Messages were received from the Queen, Winston Churchill, and the current Lord Mayor.
The health of residents was also included in the celebrations with a Mass X-Ray Unit parked in front of the
The various local horticultural societies arranged an exhibition at the Wesley Hall in Cambridge Road, and in the evening a dance was held in Manor Park Pavilion organised by the Malden and Coombe Civil Defence

The Sunday saw an open air Civic Service held in the grounds of Coombe Girls School in Clarence Avenue, conducted by the ministers and clergy of the various churches in the borough this saw the return of the Reverend Bryan Green, who had been Curate of Christ Church, and was now Rector Of Birmingham. The mayor (Bill Messenger took the salute as local groups marched past with music from the Kingston Salvation Army Band. On Monday evening there was an open bridge drive at Malden Wanderers Club in Cambridge Avenue which attracted 80 players, and Tuesday saw an interesting evening at the library, entitled “Malden’s history in the making” when long time residents of Malden recalled changes they had seen locally illustrated with slides. Arranged by the Library Circle, recollections were given by Edgar Dobson, who attended the College in Malden, and recalled watching films in Malden’s first cinema in Coombe Road, a Mr Weeks who recalled Kingston Vale as a village, and Miss Katherine Cullerne who told of haymaking in the fields where the bypass runs, and polo matches in Motspur Park. Wednesday was the date of the cricket match between Malden Wanderers and a Representative X1 at the Wanderers ground. There was a dance in the Evening at

Manor Park organised by the Malden And District Olde Tyme Dance Club. An alternative was an evening of Light Music at Coombe Girls School, organised by the vicar of St James (Neil Munt) it included contributions from the local Townswomen’s Guilds, the Kingston Vale Operatic Society (Trial By Jury) and the NEMCOM (New Malden Operatic) Society. A handicrafts exhibition was staged by the five local Townswomen’s Guilds in Manor Park Pavilion on the Thursday including pewter work, pottery and embroidery, and a choral concert took place at St James Church featuring the North Surrey Choral Society, together with the various choirs of all the Malden churches who rendered Jerusalem and Non Nobis Domine. Unfortunately this clashed with a talk given by Miss Jennings at the library entitled “Our Borough”. If there was one person who knew about local history at that time it was Hilda Jennings. Her talk was followed by another called “Photographing Your Borough” by Mr Sherbourne, and Mr Morris arranged by Malden Camera Club. u

Going out with a bang continued from page 10
Friday evening saw a display of dancing at Coombe Girls School arranged by the Wynne Hayman School Of Dancing (6-19 years). Planting for the future Eighteen commemorative trees were planted on the final Saturday. Planted by Councillors in their Wards, in ceremonies attended by the Mayor and his Aldermen. The trees ranged from an oak in Beverley Park, to a ginkgo bioba maidenhair tree in Wilverley Crescent. A beech (Coombe Road) and weeping willow (Alric Avenue) were also planted. Old Malden had an exhibition on its own history “from 500BC to the present day” attended by over 700 people at the Institute in Malden Road organised by the Old Malden and St John’s Exhibition Committee. This included many exhibits unearthed by Mr LG Carpenter on digs in the local area. A large open air display took place in Manor Park in the afternoon. Featuring various local organisations including
the Malden and District Boy Scouts Association, the Malden and Coombe Unit Of the Civil Defence Corps, the Coombe Hill Riding Stables (musical ride), Mary Chadwick and members of the New Malden Housewives Keep Fit Class dressed in their red and white tunics,Wimbledon Merton and Malden Sea Scouts. There was a six a side Football Competition arranged by Malden Town FC,and won by St Hetas (?), children’s rides on a Model railway provided by the Malden and District Society of Model Engineers, and a child’s model road arranged by the Malden and Coombe Accident Prevention Council on which children could take their cycling proficiency test. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi After the presentations of prizes for the window display competition (Cannings, Radio Rentals, Francis, Marsh and Thompson) the evening (and week) ended with£150 worth of fireworks (Pains Ltd), watched by more than six thousand spectators. The last was a coloured banner proclaiming “Malden and Coombe 1936-1961” which after burning brightly, gradually faded into the darkness Hopefully some of the eighteen trees planted during the week still remain, but there is little else other than the memories of those who attended some of the functions in Malden’s last hurrah. Malden and Coombe Library Circle was founded after the Second World War to bring library members together to share common interests and be a voice for the library and the libraryusing community. Three local councillors were members – often very enthusiastic members – of our committee, and the Mayor was our President.
The library building in Kingston Road, still only a very few years old, and seen as extremely innovative, was a source of great pride in what was then the borough of Malden and Coombe. Since then Library Circle meetings have been held weekly during the winter months and featured talks and other presentations of a wide variety of topics. Travel talks, particularly illustrated ones, have
Malden and Coombe Library Circle
by Cecily Scarlett
proved especially popular and give members as well as invited speakers an opportunity to share their holiday experiences. We have always said that we have books in the library on a wide variety of subjects; the range of possible subjects for talks is equally large. We have considered ourselves to be travellers, both in the world around us and in the world of the mind. Our new programme carries on in this tradition, taking us to Peru, the Thames riverside, and the Arctic Circle in space; and in time back to Surrey in the first half of the twentieth century and the Post Office in its pre-1970 days; and to the lives of the great civil engineer Thomas Telford, a Second World War bomber pilot and the press tycoon Lord Beaverbrook. A talk on stringed instruments bears the intriguing title “Does your Granny play the banjo?” As well as interesting – often amusing – talks, we enjoy a chance to meet like-minded people. Coffee, tea and biscuits are available during the half-hour before the meeting begins. There is a warm welcome for all our members, old and new, but we are sad to say that we can guarantee meetings only until early December, because of the increasing costs of hall hire and speakers. In the New Year the cost of membership will rise to £40 for the 10-week session. Until December the membership fee of £20 represents £2 a session and visitors are welcome for £3 a meeting. What happens after December depends on you. If enough members join or rejoin, this may not be our final session. In any case, come and share it with us on Monday evenings in the Vestry Hall at Christ Church, starting on September 26. Meetings start promptly at 7.30 but come early – from 7 pm – for coffee and chat. September Programme Monday September 26. In the Footsteps of the Incas. Mrs Challis talks of her personal challenge to Walk the Walk in Peru: a beautifully illustrated talk. VVoice

The Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Patrick Codd, invites you to join him on a charity bike ride to raise money for the Mayoral charities - Born Too Soon and Macmillian Cancer Support. The scenic ride will take place on Sunday, 18 September between 9am and 11am, and will start outside the Guildhall and travel along the river, through Bushy and Richmond Parks. Each cyclist will be given a map, and different routes (ranging in distance from 5 to 20 miles) allow for different levels of ability so that the whole family can take part. The ride should take between one to two hours depending on which route you choose. Children must be accompanied by an adult and be able to ride confidently on the road.
For information about all Mayoral events please visit www.kingston.gov.uk/mayors_charity_events Born Too Soon - offers support to parents who had or have babies being cared for on the Neonatal Unit at Kingston Hospital www.borntoosoon.org.uk Macmillan Cancer Support – provide practical, financial and emotional support to people and their families who have and have had cancer www.macmillan.org.uk/Home.aspx VVoice

Ignore the short term – invest in the long term
the city
by Justin Urquhart Stewart
I don’t think I have ever known such a time when short term news fears have had such a broad effect. I suppose to an extent it is quite understandable when you consider all the most recent events. From the horrific slaughter in Norway to the Chinese high speed train fatalities, from the political strapping around the future of the Euro to the political shambles that is being played out in Washington. This really is the stuff of the Summer poolside ripping yarn – but sadly it’s not fiction.
However the headlines are there to scare us all - after all, that’s how you sell newspapers - but we should look beyond the bold type and look at the bigger picture as to what is going on. Only three years ago we had a huge financial crisis and although everyone seeks to find the secret of alchemy and
find a sure fire way out of our problems, the truth is that there is no easy or swift solution. From a decade of fat, we now have a decade of lean. The good news is that we are at least three years into the dire decade. The bad news is that we still have many issues to address and problems to suffer. I have mentioned before the excellent tome by Reinhardt and Rogoff who soundly argue that financially driven recessions have far longer periods of recovery than any usual economic turndown, and thus we are following a well written and troubled course with still some time to run. Leaving aside the unpredictable actions of Norwegian neoNazis and other appalling zealots of any race and religion, and leaving aside the political machinations of certain unpredictable leaders from North Korea, to Libya and Venezuela, to name a few, the economic situation is still dire in key areas of the globe. Now - time to take a step back. Three years on from a near financial meltdown, the global economy is growing, and growing at quite a pace as the world rebounded from the depths of the recession. Now we are in the next stage of the decade where we will still see growth, albeit lower and slower, and as we can see already, it will be neither evenly nor smoothly spread around the world.

So what is likely to happen? The banking crisis has yet to be fully addressed, and the underlying problems often still not resolved. It is not as simplistic as just utility versus investment bankers as sins were committed on all sides, including politicians and regulators. Nor is it just an issue about capital despite all the discussions around Basel III, but far more about trust which is at the core of any banking system. This is the trust of clients depositing money with their bank and the trust between the banks themselves. Once this is lost then, as we all saw three years ago, the liquidity and flexibility in the money markets evaporates faster than any droplet of water in the Sahara. The current concern over sovereign lending has almost diverted attention away from this as many have been looking at sovereign risk, when of course we are in fact dealing with those who hold the debt - and that brings us back to the banking risk. Nor is this just a Eurozone issue as some shallow politicians would have us believe, but rather the integration of the banking system means that this is a global function – or in this case potential dysfunction. Oh and speaking of misleading views, the doom that surrounds any mention of Ireland seems to ignore that GDP expanded by 1.3% in the first three months and that with their manufacturing base and benefitting from a reduction
To advertise call 020 8336 2915 in debt costs, that there is a good chance that they will be able to grow their way out of the bog. The US debt issue will not be resolved any time soon, nor will the Euro question, but that in itself does not mean a disaster. Patching up will delay the issue until after the election and short term punters will rush around in a state of excitement – but actually what will probably happen is that as the politicians go on holiday we will find that the economy will actually carry on rather well without them. As for us in the UK? Our growth figures are weak but reflect the global malaise of the lower, slower world but I have been encouraged by the “below the line” entrepreneurialism that I have been finding around the nation. It will be a long haul but one that will recover – only another seven years to go! There are more initiatives that can be carried out in the meantime, but the main issue must be to ensure that the people have confidence that things will be getting better, albeit slowly. So for us all as investors – do we head for hills clutching our coin and trove, and find a deep cave in Wales to hide in? Well if you think we are heading for the end of the world as we know it, then cave decoration is for you. If, however, you feel that despite all the fears, we will muddle through again, then there is one tried and tested solution. It is to ensure you are well spread across all assets across the globe. Some will do worse than others and some will show their strength but, just as we saw in 2008, broad diversification did work. Thus my direction for the Summer is not to panic at short term fears, but to look through to the medium term with your diversified portfolio and enjoy a bottle or two of Provence’s finest. So remember the incantation of JK Galbraith when listening to any punditry and especially to any pompous gits in red braces – ‘the only difference is between those who know they don’t know and those who don’t know they don’t know’. This summer Age Concern Kingston marked 65 years since its founding. In 1946, a group of local people came together to establish a new organisation to help and support other local people. Remembering
Alan Alfred Reginald Martin (1923-2011) In 1927 when Alan was three years old, he moved with his family from Whetstone in Middlesex to New Malden, firstly to Phyllis Avenue, and then to 52 Franks Avenue. He started his education at The Study School in 1928; this school had opened its doors at “Oldfields” in Thetford Road in 1923. Moving on to Tiffin Boys School in 1934, he was an active member of the Music Society in the 1930s. He was still in attendance there when war was declared in September 1939. On the day that the war started, Alan helped his father dig a trench in the garden for an air raid shelter. It was built so solidly, that it was still standing after the end of hostilities. On 14th May 1940 an appeal was made for men to
join the LDV (Local Defence Volunteers) in New Malden and Alan (along with his father) was one of the first to attend at the police station to join up. The battalion formed became the 51st Malden, and Alan served in the medical section as a stretcher bearer. He received his training at the Pearl Assurance Sports Ground in Windsor Avenue. He continued to serve in what became the Home Guard through the heavy bombing that the area suffered until he was called up. Joining the Royal Armoured Corps initially as a private, but quickly his potential was recognised, and he became an officer cadet. Unfortunately while training, he fell from a rope and broke his wrist, and the injury proved so serious that he had to be invalided out of the forces. After the war Alan worked for BOAC, BEA, Gilbey Vintners, and Charles Barker advertising. He enjoyed working overseas in Nigeria, Kuwait and Australia. Alan had a successful career in public relations, working for, Save The Children, the British Direct Mail Advertising Association (as Chairman), and the London Publicity Committee.

He was elected President of the Junior Chamber Of Commerce for London for 1957-58, elected a Freeman of the City Of London in 1958, and made a fellow of the Institute of Directors in 1969. He became the public relations consultant for the Friends of The Imperial War Museum and also edited “Dispatches” the newsletter for the group, which became a 56 page journal under his editorship from 1991-2005. He also worked for a number of other charities, and served on the committee to help save Charleston the home of the Bloomsbury Group. Alan also served as Press Advisor to the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association, a group he worked with for 34 years, and was Honorary Secretary of the Edward Thomas Fellowship. He was a dignified man of strong principles but would also have a sense of fun, and cheerful conversation. If he was your friend, you had a friend for life. Always smartly dressed, he proudly stated that he never had worn jeans, and always wore a tie, even when popping out for a newspaper.

Alan Martin died on 20th February 2011 after a long illness, the funeral was held at St Brides Church in Fleet Street on 3rd March. Among many letters of condolence the family received a message from the Queen (Patron of the VC and GC Association) and a handwritten message of sympathy from the Prince Of Wales (President of the Association), evidence of the respect he had earned from all who came in contact with him.
Lake Thomas Cakes offers you bespoke hand made cakes for all occasions, from weddings to birthdays.
Alan’s death also brings to an end the link with any members of the Malden Battalion of the Home Guard to my best knowledge. He leaves a sister Daphne, who still lives in New Malden. VVoice

To serve 4 people, you’ll need a large round, oval or oblong fresh crusty loaf. Slice the top off and scoop out the inside of the loaf, leaving a 1cm (1/2in) thick wall. Brush the inside wall of the loaf with some good quality olive oil. For extra flavour spread a thin layer of red or green pesto sauce or sun dried tomato paste inside the loaf. Choose a colourful selection of 3-4 fillings. Cold chicken, smoked ham, salami, cheese, firm sliced tomatoes, roasted vegetables (such as peppers, courgettes or aubergines), baby spinach leaves or fresh herbs like parsley and basil are all ideal. Chopped olives, capers or anchovy fillets will give extra flavour. Avoid watery sliced cucumber
and salad leaves as they will make the bread go soggy. Layer the fillings of your choice in the loaf, packing them down well. Drizzle with a little olive oil as you go and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. You can make an extra filling layer with the breadcrumbs removed from the loaf by blending them in a food processor for a few econds with a little olive oil, crushedgarlic and fresh basil. Press the lid on top of the loaf and wrap tightly in foil. Chill in the fridge for 3-4 hrs or overnight. Slice thickly or in wedges to serve. Keep the kids happy with their own individual versions using small crusty rolls. Fill with layers of mild Cheddar or Edam cheese and wafer thin ham or sliced cold sausages adding a thin layer of pickle or tomato relish. Alternatively, mash a can of drained tuna with some mayonnaise and layer with crisp little gem salad leaves and grated carrot. VVoice

Water for Africa
fundraising
by Ellie Gomes & Phoebe Firth
the contributions already received.
The money we have raised will help to change people’s lives in Africa but even more lives can be saved . If you would like to donate,
For our Citizenship and Economic Well-Being GCSE we are asked to find an issue in the world and raise awareness or make a difference to it.
Just Text WFAF00 (Plus amount you wish to donate) to 70070 Or:Visit www.waterforafrica.org. uk/go/donate-and-help
We have chosen the charity Water For Africa as there has been a severe drought in Africa recently. The charity provides clean water for communities in Africa by boring holes to provide clean, reliable water systems. So far, as part of our coursework, we have given out selfdesigned leaflets about the charity and collected donations on New Malden high street, which raised £59.61! We then did a sponsored 12 mile cycle, It was tiring but worth it as we raised over £100 in sponsorship in addition to
Our fundraising attempts will be assessed as part of our GCSE coursework but aside from the educational aspect,we have enjoyed the experience and are so pleased to have been able to do something in our school holiday which has been worthwhile and a help to others. Home is where the handset is
technology
an annoyance. Watch out for answering machines with tiny recording times, too: 5 minutes of recording sounds reasonable, but a few wordy messages when you’re on holiday will quickly fill all the available memory. Remember too that unlike traditional corded phones, cordless models don’t work in the event of a power cut.
Home phones don’t get the same attention as smartphones, but they’re often smarter buys: cutting-edge telephones won’t cost you several hundred pounds or tie you into a two-year contract that takes £40 per month from your bank account. So how do you choose the one that’s right for you? The first thing to consider is how smart you want your home phone to be. Many manufacturers offer phones that can send SMS text messages, or have colour screens, or can use the Skype internet chat service, but unless you think you’re actually going to use those features then there isn’t much point in paying extra for them - and in the case of SMS messages, your mobile phone contract probably includes a bundle of free SMS messages, whereas ones you send from your home phone will cost money per text. With the exception of the very cheapest telephones, home phones these days tend to be cordless. Most systems have a main base station, which plugs into your telephone line, and any supplemental handsets then connect to that base station so you don’t need to run extension cables around your house or get BT to stick in new sockets. If you opt for an answering machine version, this will be built into the main base station. The key technology to look for in a cordless phone is DECT (pictured here), which is short for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. This ensures reasonable call quality and enables multiple handsets to share a single phone socket, but take manufacturers’ claims about handset range with an enormous pinch of salt: like wireless computer networks, those “100m range” claims are only achievable in ideal conditions where there aren’t walls, radiators and other obstacles to obstruct the signal. However, unlike earlier cordless phones, UK DECT devices shouldn’t interfere with or suffer interference from wireless networks, baby monitors and other wireless devices. There are other issues to consider. Handsets with 150name memories sound great, but if those numbers aren’t shared with your other handsets - something BT Stratus phones don’t do - then that selling point soon becomes

Please remember to mention the
Remember too that some services cost money, so for example Caller ID and Caller Display require you to sign up to a particular service, which may incur an extra charge. Some phones offer additional technologies, such as Voice over IP, or VoIP f o r short. This routes calls over the internet, and the Skype internet calling system is probably the most famous example of VoIP in action. Firms such as Gigaset do a nice line of Skype-compatible VoIP phones, but they need to be connected to your broadband line to make VoIP calls - and if you’ve got broadband, that probably means you’ve already got a Skype-capable computer, smartphone or tablet. When it comes to actually spending money, we’ve got two pieces of advice: look online for reviews and never pay the RRP. User reviews on retailers’ websites will tell you whether the speakerphone is actually audible and whether the LCD display is legible, and using price checking sites such as Kelkoo.co.uk soon demonstrates that discounts of nearly 50% are widely available on many models. The old table next to the allotment site office is doing a roaring trade. That’s where we allotment holders can literally pick up something for nothing. It’s all very informal, of course. There’s no notice pinned there, so as a new recruit it took several months to dawn on me that the piles of garden-related objects that appear at intervals are free for the taking. From time to time, a shed clearance results in a plethora of hanging baskets, old garden tools and surplus plants. They soon disappear, to be put to good use somewhere else on the site. But recently

it’s all been edible goodies—bags of them, and they’re still coming!
It’s been a fantastic year for fruit. So good, in fact, that some plum tree branches have collapsed under the weight of the crop. Rumour has it that we have a variety of yellowskinned plum that is unique to our site. Nobody seems to know what it’s called, but judging by the pounds of fruit people have been giving away, it’s a prolific cropper. But for flavour it comes nowhere near the greengages I was given recently. Exquisitely sweet and juicy, to my mind it’s far superior to the more widely grown Victoria plum. An allotment gives you the opportunity to grow varieties such as greengages that are less readily available in the supermarket. Our New Malden site offers the right conditions for stone fruit: sunny and well drained, with an alkaline clay base. I’m off to RHS Wisley very soon to put in an order before the best varieties run out. Buying trees can be pricey. I don’t mind investing money in something that will most probably outlive me, but the beauty of allotment gardening is that you can do things even on a tight budget. There is always someone on the site willing—and able—to do a swap. Take seeds, for example. Very few of us have room or appetite for the 500 parsnips or Florence fennel you could potentially get from a single packet of seeds. Swapping half-used packets of seeds means you get to grow a wider range of varieties too. But even with careful planning you can often end up with a crop failure (the aubergine in my greenhouse dropped all its flowers ) or a glut (eight cauliflowers matured in the same week). That’s when an exchange is really appreciated. Sometimes the stakes are much higher than the odd cauli, though. One of the most useful bargains I have struck with a fellow allotment holder was the construction of an impressive cold frame in exchange for a large roll of fruit netting I had left over in my shed. The frame is now full of rooted cuttings I’ve made to repay another deal: making woven metal seats for my two garden chairs in return for some flowering perennials. What’s that worth in pinks, I wonder? VVoice

policing
Dear Local Resident, I am writing this article shortly after London experienced the recent disorder across many boroughs of London, Kingston Officers were deployed in response to these problems throughout London, as well as ensuring peace was kept within our own borough. I hope that you managed to avoid the problems and that you, your families and friends are all safe and well. In response to the kind support offered by the community, please find below a tribute provided by Kingston Upon Thames Police Commanders Support office.
Police pay tribute to local support During the disturbances across London, police officers and staff have been working incredibly hard to keep Londoners safe. This difficult time has been made easier by the huge amount of public support that has been offered to police here in New Malden and Kingston. The front counter at CI Tower was closed as a precautionary measure, although the teams remained based there and on active patrol, but Kingston police station continued its normal 24/7 operations. New Malden officers worked extended shifts and also worked their rest days during the disturbances, working throughout the day and night, covering both New Malden itself and Kingston Town Centre and were delighted to report no local incidents linked to the public disorder issues elsewhere in London. Kingston police station was overwhelmed by the kindness of local businesses who offered support. Local bakeries brought in trays of cakes and biscuits, a local food shop delivered boxes of energy drinks, biltong and biscuits for officers and police staff and members of the public arrived with drinks and cakes. In one case three cakes were still warm from the oven. Other officers were approached by a man with a bag full of boxes of chocolates who was quoted as saying “Thank you for everything that you and colleagues are doing for us. We really support what you are doing for the community and my family feels safe knowing you are all out there”. A local physiotherapy company based in Kingston has very kindly offered free physio treatment to two of our Kingston officers who were injured policing the riots in London. Managing director of the physiotherapy company based in Kingston stated in a letter to Kingston’s borough commander Martin Greenslade: “I would like to congratulate you and your team on the excellent work you do both day to day but more particularly over recent evenings keeping the town safe. I and the team here greatly appreciate your efforts.” Given the stresses and strains put on officers and the potential for injury this offer is hugely appreciated by officers at Kingston. New Malden based PC Aaron Brown says : “We have been extremely touched by the generosity and kind words we have received from members of the public. This has

been a very testing time for both the police and the community. Our spirits have been lifted by all of the support we have received. We would all like to thank you for your support and to let you know that it has contributed towards keeping morale high.” Local Kingston residents have also been emailing officers expressing their thanks. One stated: “Thank you to your fellow officers for their efforts and the risks they took in trying to protect citizens and property. Some of the scenes we saw on TV were horrific to watch. I can only imagine how scary it was to be on the ground facing angry mobs intent on hurting officers.” Each and every officer and police staff based at Kingston would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has offered help in anyway and supported the police through goodwill during this tough period. Beverley Engagement Details The Drop in Service for the Korean Community continues, with the next one being held on Monday 19th September 2011 between 1430hours and 1630 hours at the Methodist Church in the High Street. In addition we are holding a morning drop in between 1030 and 1230 hours on the 14th September, also at the Methodist Church. On a final note, a reminder of our opening times here at CI Tower, Monday - Friday 12.30pm - 5.30pm Saturday 10.30am - 3.30pm Sunday - Closed If on reading this article you would like any further advice or have some questions on this or any other issue, you would like answered please do not hesitate in contacting the team. Start planting NOW!!
gardening
by Pippa Greenwood
I love this month, not least because it gives me carte blanche for thinking about something I adore: spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils and other narcissus. Why? Because for best results the bulbs for these spring delights need to be planted in the autumn. Planted from now onwards, they have a good chance to grow roots and start to build up energy for making a great display next spring. Choose your daffodils carefully and you can have a display starting in late winter (from varieties such as ‘February Gold’) right through until mid-spring. When looking through the selection in catalogues or on garden centre shelves, just check flowering times which will be clearly indicated on the pack. Sometimes this will be as numerals rather than actual dates. For example, February to March could be indicated as 2-3 or sometimes even II-III. Spring flowering bulbs are generally completely hardy in our climate so unless hit by serious extremes of weather (such as prolonged flooding), they will keep coming year after year. There should be planting depths written on the packs of bulbs you buy or order, but if not it is generally better to plant slightly too deep rather than too shallowly. As a guide, I would advise planting at roughly three times the height of the bulb. If planted too shallowly they don’t perform so well and are more likely to be accidentally dug up when you’re planting other things. Buying larger quantities of bulbs usually makes them significantly cheaper per bulb and there are always multipack offers to be found, so shop about and choose carefully, but whatever you go for, unless you choose the very elite super-pricey bulbs, they’ll represent superb value for money. If you’re looking to plant a large expanse, perhaps a bank or the area along the sides of the drive, go for daffodils by the sack rather than by the bag. I’m a real fan of crocus – choose from purple, lilac, striped, cream, yellow, orange or white. They’re very good value, but here’s a word of warning – I always find that the superbargain priced mega-bags of crocus contain a lot of yellow and orange crocus which the sparrows love to shred. It’s better value to pay a little more for smaller single colour bags and avoid the yellows and oranges. Once established, spring bulbs multiply quite rapidly, so you should end up with more than you started with – this

means it’s important to plant at the suggested distances apart, even if it may feel a little sparse for the first year or two. If you want a high-impact look from the start, then you can plant a little closer than suggested, but bear in mind the bulbs will become congested and need lifting and replanting all the sooner.
Spring flowering bulbs need little attention once established – just give them an occasional feed and once the clumps become congested, divide and replant them to give each bulb more space so it can fulfil its potential. Where to grow them: Try simple daffodils like ‘Carlton’, ‘King Alfred’ or English bluebells grown in random plantings, scattered and then planted where they fall, beneath trees in your garden. They’ll look great and often produce a really good display beneath the outer spread of trees where it may otherwise be difficult to encourage much else to grow. Shrubs and even climbers can also be used for naturalised bulb plantings, but because they’re smaller, grow the more diminutive bulbs such as miniature Narcissus ‘Tete a Tete’, ‘Hawera’, ‘Peeping Tom’, rich blue grape hyacinths or delicate Chinodoxa. On steep banks where gardening is difficult, why not grow masses of bulbs? Planting on the near vertical may be tricky, but once there you can enjoy the display for years to come. Pots or other good-looking containers make great homes for bulbs. If you’ve fallen for anything particularly small or expensive, pots can be the answer and will mean you can enjoy and not lose those tiny spring bulb jewels amongst their larger relatives. Larger planters including tubs and window boxes are brilliant for bulbs too – try a host of golden daffodils in a smart blue pot, some delicate dwarf iris or Iris reticulata in a window box or pot on the front steps where you’ll be able to enjoy their good looks and their subtle perfume. Whichever type of spring bulb you have in mind, and wherever you intend to grow them, start planning and buying now so that they can be in the ground promptly. You can get great Grow Your Own Veg results with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’. Order your veg plants from www.pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May at a great time for planting. In our area no doubt many young people will be celebrating their A Level results and the fact that they have been successful in obtaining a University place. However for many young people this may not be the case and whilst the press/media concentrate on the successes there are many young people who haven’t received the results they hoped and have missed out on a UCAS place. Clearing usually runs until the end of September and whilst there are fewer places this year there may be other options that are worth exploring including in some cases retakes. The important point here is not to panic and knee jerk onto any degree because of the future fees increase. (N.B. The new fees system from 2012 means paying back more but over a longer period.) See www.direct.gov.uk/ studentfinance Research shows that people with degrees survive recession better and have more earning potential – however it is important that students choose the degree that is right for them and have a realistic idea of what career paths may be open to them afterwards. In some cases a degree alone is not enough as many employers

Shopping for School
stuff
But something inside me says that the cheap stuff is lovingly handstitched by six-yearolds in Indonesian sweatshops for 10p a day plus a handful of rice on alternate Thursdays, and my conscience just won’t let me do it. So I go for the nice stuff, and drain the bitter cup of resentful fury at having to ditch perfectly good clobber every July and replace it in September.
During the course of the school year you sort of become used to the fact that the hems of his trousers are gradually creeping further and further up his calf, that the toes of his trainers are getting lumpier and lumpier, that his midriff is no longer reliably covered by the ever-shortening tails of his school shirt. But as the school holidays draw gratefully to a close you realise with a jolt that his uniform is no longer even decent, and that he needs a whole new set of schmutter. This is even more of a jolt if you have a daughter – you can’t send her back to school looking like a low-rent Britney Spears - and so September becomes the Month of the Ordeal of Shopping for School. This used to be the one time of year when Good Old Woolie’s was indeed a Wonder. It sold not only the necessary clobber but also the new geometry set and calculator and ring-binders and all the other bits and pieces that seemed to need replacing every time they had to go back to school. Now I have found other shops that obligingly provide under one roof the same cornucopia of education-related items that Woolworth used to do, but the shock of the loss of Woolie’s jerked me out of my habituated take-it-for-granted complacency and I found myself becoming increasingly enraged by the need to source an entire suite of new stuff every year. Nevertheless, kids grow; and as a parent you’re faced with two choices every time September comes round: either buy cheap stuff that may or may not last the year, or buy expensive stuff that they’re going to grow out of well before it wears out.The former is the obvious choice and if, by the time July rolls round, they look like junior Worzel Gummidges – well, they won’t have to put up with it for long.
60
Please remember to mention the
Now, though, a new initiative is off the ground in my home town. It’s called BootXchange, and it’s a simple trade-in system: you hand in last year’s slightly worn but still perfectly good high-end brand-name sports shoes plus a £5 administration fee, and in return you receive the hand-me-downs from the next generation up. They’ve only been worn once a week for 20 or 30 weeks and, being quality gear, they still have at least two seasons wear in them. Voila – new boots for a fiver. This is a good scheme and should be expanded to other school clothing. Actually, you can hand in the kids’ outgrown sweatshirts and stuff and they will indeed be passed on to the less well-off kids whose folks can’t afford new. At present there’s a stigma attached to second-hand clothes but now we’re all poor, our attitudes should change and we should see it as straightforward and indeed praiseworthy September thrift. In fact I propose to take it a step further. Now I’ve reached a certain age I’m going to start a TrouserXchange scheme, where I can hand in my desperately-clinging-on-to-youth jeans and accept instead a couple of pairs of the highwaist cavalry twill slacks that are appropriate to my years. Oh, and I’ll be exchanging all my Ben Sherman polo shirts for a drawer full of cardies. VVoice
