Welcome to our September edition Dear All,
I know I may have a short memory but am definitely giving summer 2013 a big thumbs up. I do hope you agree. From Wimbledon onwards the weather was lovely for such a long time and there wasn’t as much as a spot of rain from the beginning of Malden Fortnight until the end – making life so much easier for the event organisers (exception of course being the Dog Show which in the interest of pet safety unfortunately had to be cancelled because temperatures were SO high – who would have thought!) Our annual holiday to see in-laws, cousins and friends in South West Cork in Ireland was also exceptional -2 days rain and 8 days of sun compared to the 2 of sun and 8 of rain that we ‘enjoyed’ last year! No wetsuits this year swimming in the Atlantic for our little bodyboarders…. I, on the other hand, sat on the sidelines keeping Next copy deadline: everything safe and myself warm. A great sacrifice I know 17th September but, well, someone has to do it. My ‘back-up’ holiday (for Published by sunning purposes) on the Venetian Coast wasn’t, as such, Malden Media Limited a complete necessity but hopefully will live up to my 36 Rosebery Avenue, KT3 4JS nostalgic memories. We’re off in a couple of days from writing this to Union Lido – a campsite where I spent 3 jenny@maldenmedia.co.uk very happy holidays, many (many!) years ago! For two of 020 8336 2915 them we drove from our home in Hannover, Germany and www.nmvv.co.uk the third when we moved back to the UK, ALL the way from Glasgow to Venice. Imagine! When our girls were We also publish little we got DVD players for the car to make any solo long Worcester journeys with them a bit easier. Now of course there’s all Park Life sorts of electronic devices to relive the boredom of long trips so I’m not sure they’d ever comprehend Glasgow to Venice in a Peugeot 504 (turquoise with proper roofrack) playing iSpy, reading Enid Blyton until finally completely carsick and occasionally persuading the parents to let us to listen to Abba, whilst slowly, slowly your legs (those bits not protected by shorts) stuck faster and firmer to the seats. Hands up all of you who are old/unlucky enough to remember dimpled plastic seats! And the patterns on the backs of your legs when you managed to peel yourself away…. Anyway, enough about me. I hope you enjoy this edition and remember to email me any local events you’re involved with over the coming months. I know it’s very We highly recommend advertising on Village Voice. Community A stitch in time…. Saves lives
Ladies of New Malden help to raise funds for The Lunchbowl Network by raffling beautiful, handcrafted quilt It seems other hobbies just aren’t a “patch” on the latest craft-craze sweeping New Malden. Quilting has become the surprise new hit on the Adult Education programme at the Malden Centre, attracting a diverse but wildly enthusiastic group of ladies (although gents are also more than welcome to join!) who meet on Monday mornings to stitch, snip, sew and socialise whilst working on some highly colourful and creative pieces of patchwork. The designs are then transformed into quilts, cushions, throws or even wall-hangings and there are really no boundaries on creative ideas. Course Leader, Sue Thornborough, says “We really have seen a renewed interest in all forms of handicrafts and hobbies over recent years – whether baking, knitting, dressmaking and now, quilting. It’s already very popular in countries such as Japan, New Zealand, Canada and the States and it’s great to see the art having such a renaissance in the UK.” The heritage of quilting was the inspiration behind the ladies’ wish to create a work of art that could be raffled off in aid of a charity that had a special connection to the local area. Adult Education Manager, Sue Wilson, immediately suggested The Lunchbowl Network – a local charity that works to provide daily meals for over 450 orphaned and vulnerable children in the Kibeira Slum in Nairobi. Set up in 2006, it is small, volunteer led charity which, is known to and supported by many families in and around New Malden. Sue Thornborough adds; “The group decided to called the quilt ‘Shared plates’ as a reference to the wonderful work of the Lunchbowl Network and the fact that our group often met up over a meal to ensure we finished the quilt in time for the grand draw! “The design is also made up of colourful circles of fabric which were cut up and “shared” around the quilt to help create our unique design. We were delighted when Tudor Williams agreed to showcase the quilt in their window display and hope that lots of customers and passerbys were able to look at and enjoy our ‘work of art’. Perhaps some of them may even have been inspired to come along to our group and give patchwork and quilting a try!” Tudor Williams Manager, Peter Findlater was also instrumental in the development of this project, thanks to the generous donation of fabrics and materials from the department store’s flagship haberdashery department. Fundraiser and local resident Heidi Gomes, adds; “We were thrilled when we heard that the group had decided to raise funds for us by creating such a beautiful quilt.

I know how much time, effort and skill has gone into every stitch and the monies raised will really make such a difference to Lunchbowl and the orphans we look after in Kibeira. Just 33p feeds a child for one day and therefore every penny counts. Huge thanks again to all the ‘Monday Morning Ladies’!” Currently, the course attracts around 8- 10 regulars every week – although there is capacity for many more to join and Sue Thornborough and the Adult Education team at the Malden Centre are really keen to see the group grow and expand. Sue says, ‘The joy of arts and crafts is something that crosses all boundaries – including language and communication. We were recently delighted to welcome two new Korean ladies to the class who have picked up the skill of sewing very quickly and have become a key part of the group. “I also know many of my members regularly meet up outside of term time or in the evenings between classes, either to complete their patchwork or just to have a chat. I’ve seen some very firm friendships develop over the past two years and I would urge anyone who is thinking of taking up a new hobby or who just wants to get out of the house a bit more and meet a great new group of people to come along and give it a go!” The Grand Draw, raised over £80 for the Lunchbowl Network Pictured: “Quilting Queens” – ladies from the Malden Centre’s Quilting Class with Adult Education Manager, Sue Wilson and Raffle Winner, Mr Nev Ware from King’s Avenue, New Malden For more information about the quilting class (Mondays, from September 6th, 10am – 12.30) or any of the Adult Education Classes at the Malden Centre, please call 020 8336 7770 or contact Sue Wilson on SueWilson@dcleisure. co.uk For more details about the Lunchbowl Network, go to www. lunchbowl.org . New Malden History Prince George The Second Duke Of Cambridge by Robin Gill With the birth of Prince George Alexander Louis the
son of the Duke and Duchess Of Cambridge on 22nd July, it is worth remembering the local connections with another member of the Royal Family with similar titles.
The lie of the land
The earlier Prince George {William Frederick Charles} was born on 26th March 1819 in Hanover Germany. He was a grandson of George III, and his father Prince Adolphus Frederick had been created 1st Duke Of Cambridge on 20th November 1801. In October 1836 Prince Adolphus purchased the estate of Coombe (some 1300 acres) from 3rd Earl Spencer, initially it was thought, for his son on his coming of age in 1837. But the land had been bought as an investment, and no member of the family ever lived at Coombe. They certainly did not take possession of Coombe (Wood) House which had been used as a boarding school since 1834 by Dr George Edward Biber. He was also the curate of the small church at Kingston Vale. The whole of the estate stretched from the Vale to Norbiton and down into Malden, and other than Coombe House, only contained two other properties (Kenry House and Coombe Hurst) both now part of Kingston University, and three farms (Robin Hood, Coombe, and Hoppingwood). The purchase price was said to be £35,000. The Duke could be a generous man to his workers. On the occasion of the marriage of Victoria and Albert in February 1840, he arranged for 100 men women and children to enjoy a meal of “Old English Fare” at the George Inn on Kingston Hill distributed by the principal tenants. He also ensured that the labourers and their families received new clothes each Christmas. The Duke only seemed to visit the manor about once a year for shooting, normally in late autumn or winter. His last visit was in December 1845 when he was nearly 72 years old accompanied by his son. On previous occasions his companion had been his equerry Baron Knesebeck. The shooting grounds were zealously guarded by gamekeepers and stewards, and any trespassers and poachers prosecuted at the Kingston Bench.
Staged romance
Prince George married an actress called Sarah Fairbrother on 8th January 1847 just before he left to take command of the Queen’s troops in Dublin. He was required to ask for Queen Victoria’s permission to marry, but omitted to do so as Sarah already had four To advertise email jenny@nmvv.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

illegitimate children by three different men (including George), and agreement would have been withheld. The marriage was regarded as illegal, so Sarah did not inherit a title, and was known as Mrs Fitzgeorge with the couple’s children going by the same surname. The 1st Duke died on 8th July 1850 after a short illness. Prince George carried on the tradition of personally rewarding the labourers who worked on his estate. During the shooting parties in Coombe Wood he was known to slip away, almost unobserved, into some cottage to judge for himself how life was treating his workers. He managed to remember the names of all his tenants and labourers, and every year the tenants filled out a form giving the numbers of workers on their farm, how long they have worked there ,and whether they are married or not. Normally around Christmas time they all met somewhere in Coombe Wood (later at the institute in Kingston Vale where the Duke was President), with land stewards on one side and tenants on the other, together with the labourers with their wives and children. The Duke stood in the centre and gave out blankets, sheets, coats, trousers, and other clothing.
Warren peace
For many years the public had used Warren Road as a way across the manor towards Malden and Wimbledon, and a notice erected by the first Duke when he bought the estate forbidding people to use the road was

invariably knocked down, but in 1850 the new Duke was advised that he could prevent pedestrians using this path, and he did so by placing an ornamental gate at the end and placing a lock on it. The key was held by the gatekeeper in a little lodge nearby. A meeting was hastily arranged between the local townsfolk and the Duke, who stated that the original right of way dated back to 1821 when the semaphore station was erected to allow the passage of men and materials to the building. In the 1850s there was no need for the station, and therefore no need for the right of way. Kingston (which then included the hamlet of New Malden) took him to court at Croydon

and won by proving that the road had been used for ages not only by the public, but by tradesman such as printers and brewers, and on Derby Days by many going to Epsom. The verdict was that it could be used by pedestrians but not by carriages and horses. Vehicles are still prohibited from using this route unless they have a permit. This has caused problems for decades and in November 1920 the Prince Of Wales (Edward VIII) and the Duke Of York (George VI) were stopped and turned away by an official when trying to use the road enroute to Coombe Hill Golf Club.
Meat and drink
The hunting parties in Coombe Woods in the 1860s were like a shooting gallery. It should be remember that the “game” on the manor was specially bred for the Duke and his partners, and a team of beaters would ensure that they were easy targets. On one occasion in just three hours the shooters accounted for 356 of these unfortunate creatures. These would include pheasants, partridges, hares, and rabbits. The conduits which stood on the manor ceased to supply water to Hampton Court around 1876 and in 1894 the supply of venison to landowners under which the pipes passed was withdrawn, this included the Duke, and in the following year he paid £75 to buy the conduit houses and the rights to the water supply.
Golfing links
Just before the death of the Duke in 1904, the revision of the lists of those eligible to vote took place in Malden and Coombe. The Duke’s two sons, Adolphus Augustus Frederick Fitzgeorge, and Augustus Charles Frederick Fitzgeorge were on the list because of their ownership of The Wanderings and Hoppingwood Farms, whilst the Duke’s sole qualification was listed as being the occupation of certain gravel pits in Coombe as he had already passed on most of his estate to his children. This would never do said the revising barrister, and “gravel

pits” was altered to “land”, becoming a much smarter qualification. It is interesting to note that these gravel pits became the basis of the nine hole golf course at Coombe Wood, which in part was created by the Duke’s two sons on land from the estate. In 1932 the local authority of Malden and Coombe agreed to purchase both Coombe Hill and Coombe Wood golf courses for £72,000. A number of Coombe residents agreed to pay a rate totalling £1800 a year towards this project with a lease of 21 years being granted to the clubs. There were a number of obstacles including requests that the council took over responsibility for a number of roads in the area, but these were overcome and the necessary legislation went through parliament. There are many links locally with the Duke’s family, both Cambridge Road and Avenue being named after him, and Fitzgeorge Avenue after the family name. Also, the larger Cambridge Road on the route into Kingston. Close by, stood the Cambridge Asylum for widows of army personnel (now Cambridge Gardens flats). The lodge still stands at the entrance and the Royal cypher can still be made out. Christ Church and its vicarage, was also built on land given by the Duke in 1866, who also gave £100 towards the building project. He gave land in Elm Road for the building of the boys’ school there (recently demolished) in 1895, and land was also given in Kingston Vale for the building of churches and schools.
18
But the Duke could also be obstructive deciding that a small place like Kingston Vale only needed one inn, and sought the closure of the Bald Faced Stag. When another pub was built in 1856, and even named after him, he would not allow it a licence to sell alcohol and it had to remain a beer house, Finally, in 1897 Malden and Coombe Council asked for land for allotments, the Duke agreed to a 7 year lease on the understanding the land would be given up on a months’ notice. Not surprisingly the offer was declined.

Did you know? Boilers account for around 55% of what you spend in a year on energy bills. You can save as much as £310 a year by replacing it.
Save Money by Doing Winter Things Now By Jasmine Birtles, Moneymagpie.com
Winter might seem like some time away but you can
save money by preparing for it now. Plumbers are cheaper while the weather is warmer and there are still offers on insulation and boilers so start work now before winter arrives and the prices go up.
Switch your bills now
It’s a great time to switch to a cheaper provider as the major providers typically start to increase their prices any day now, just in time for winter. Find a copy of your last gas and electricity bills, go to the energy-switching page on Moneymagpie.com and find a cheaper deal for yourself. It’s often worth considering one of the smaller suppliers to obtain a better price. You could save up to £60 a year by moving to a smaller supplier. Sainsbury’s Energy, First Utility, Ovo Energy and The Co-Operative Energy all trumped the major suppliers for cheaper tariffs in early 2013. If you want to stick to one of the major suppliers you may be eligible for discounted bills through the government’s ECO (Energy Company Obligation) scheme. The ECO scheme offers heating and insulation improvements for low-income and means tested households. You’re eligible for the scheme if you receive certain benefits; see www.gov.uk/energy-companyobligation for the full list. You can apply through the Energy Saving Trust on 0300 123 1234. Once you have switched to the best-priced deal, the next step is to make sure your home retains heat with the efficiency of an old-time dragon.
Boilers
Insulation
Now is a great time to get up-to-date insulation as it’s a quiet period for installers. Insulation materials are also much cheaper to buy in the summer and early autumn
when the demand is low, so it’s worth checking out B&Q or Homebase. Efficient insulation can cut the cost
DG Accountancy Services provide a friendly and professional service at an affordable price. Based in Epsom and Worcester Park
If your boiler is coming to the end of its life, now is a good time to have it replaced. Most boilers over 15 years old can be repaired to keep them working, but they will be less efficient than modern ones. Even factoring in the cost of a new boiler you could save money by replacing it now. Also, you could receive up to £270 cashback for updating your boiler through the new government energy improvement scheme, The Green Deal Cashback Scheme. The scheme will give you money back if you make energy efficiency improvements in your home such as installing a new boiler, having loft or cavity wall insulation done, improving heating, draught proofing, double glazing and installing renewable energy such as solar panels. The Green Deal is available to households in England and Wales and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. You can apply even if you are renting privately or in social housing providing the landlord can pay for installations costs.
20
Firstly, have a Green Deal assessment carried out on your property which will provide you with a report of what could be improved. Then agree to a quote or Green Deal plan with a Green Deal Provider. You can find them online through www.greendealorb.co.uk/consumersearch. Once you have agreed the quote, apply for the Green Deal Cashback Voucher at www.gdcashback.decc.gov.uk. Make sure you have the work completed before the voucher expires and you’ll receive your cashback within 30 days.

Draught-proofing
Draught-proofing is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to save energy in your home. The Energy Saving Trust claims you can save £55 a year. You could save more money by taking the DIY route; materials should set you back around £100 while a professional might cost double this. Some older properties with single glazing will be more difficult to draught-proof however and if you are not comfortable with your DIY skills, hiring a professional could save you money in the long run. Check with your home insurance policy before carrying out work yourself to ensure that you are covered for any mishaps.

Plumbers
Summer and early autumn is a slower time of year for plumbers so you could find the rates more favourable, and you’ll also be able to get the work completed quickly. Have any pipe repairs or radiator work done now to eliminate cold spots and fix wasteful dripping taps. It’s also worth having the plumbers in just to check everything is ship shape for winter.

Mencap goes from strength to strength It’s going to be a busy few months for Kingston Mencap. We have a packed calendar of events for people in the borough who have learning disabilities, and their families - take a look at our website, www. kingstonmencap.co.uk to see what’s on. Coming up soon is our annual Senior Party on 14th September. A great themed event (wear red and blue!) at the United Reformed Church, New Malden, where our members can relax and enjoy a great night out, listening to the fab music of the band B.L.O. Tickets cost just £5 each for members (for details on how to join, see below). As befits a charity with bags of energy we work hard to raise funds, and we will be having a fundraising flag day on 26th/27th October, so look out for our volunteers at Tolworth Marks & Spencer. We run three leisure clubs for our members. Xpression is our youth project for teenagers at Searchlight Community Centre. It’s on 7pm-9pm, Tuesdays, term time. There’s lots of fun to be had including football, art and crafts and games. For those aged 19 to 30, there’s Future Friends every other Thursday, based at the Canbury Pavillion in the summer. It’s a great way to make new friends and take part in activities like bowling, dancing and if you’re feeling brave, karaoke. Finally there’s Seekers for adults aged over 18, which meets every Monday evening at Burlington Primary School in New Malden, 7pm-9pm. You can meet new people, have a chat and take part in a wide range of activities including a monthly disco, art and crafts, bingo and cooking. As if that’s not enough there’s a drop-in every Saturday, 12-3pm at Searchlight which has great activities like boccia, badminton, craft, as well as providing lunch. There’s also a carers’ group which invites a speaker to come and talk on learning disability issues bi-monthly. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Raleigh House, Nelson Road, New Malden. Being a member of Kingston Mencap costs only £5 a year and on top of the clubs there’s a newsletter as well as exciting social events. For more details, please
visit www.kingstonmencap.co.uk or contact Jenny Pitt on 020 8816 7500 or email jenny@kingstonmencap.co.uk. Kingston Mencap is run by a great team of dedicated volunteers and we are always on the lookout for new recruits! Volunteering with us is very rewarding and we offer you a very warm welcome. If you would like to get involved and can regularly spare a couple of hours a week, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Jenny on the details above for an application form. . VVoice

Beat The Utility Bills The gadgets that’ll save you cash and do your bit for the planet too With summer already a distant memory, energy
companies are rubbing their hands with glee. Cooler weather means bigger energy bills. Time to review a few energy saving devices then. You don’t need to spend a fortune: some of the most effective changes are the simplest. For example, one of the best bill-busters is to replace existing bulbs with low-energy ones. Halogen bulbs are better than incandescent ones, but LED bulbs are better still: for example in a typical 6-light kitchen spotlight, you can replace six 50W halogen bulbs with six 3W LEDs - so the total energy use would drop from 300W to just 18W.
Look for “warm white” LEDs if you want a natural light: some LEDs have a bluish light, an effect not everybody likes. Note if you want dimmable lights you’ll need dimmable bulbs and LED-friendly dimmer switches. While the bulbs do cost more than traditional ones the price is coming down, and they last much, much longer than even halogens, so they’ll pay for themselves quickly and save you money over a long period of time. If you have an outdoor security light, consider swapping that too: while halogen security lights can use 400W or more, LED ones can be surprisingly bright with bulbs rated at just 10W. Turning things off can slash your energy usage too, and computers are particular offenders. Investing in the Ecobutton, which costs around £15, can pay for itself very quickly: press it when you take a break and it’ll put your PC into the most energy efficient standby mode. For TVs, a TV standby saver can put all your home entertainment kit to sleep when you put the TV into standby mode, and there’s an equivalent for PCs. Expect to pay £21 for a TV standby saver and around £16 for a PC one. The Energy Saving Trust also recommends the WAHL Eco Kettle, which uses 60% less energy than a normal kettle - but don’t spoil the

savings by boiling more water than you actually need. Don’t forget about batteries either: swapping from normal batteries to rechargeable ones can save you hundreds of pounds in a relatively short space of time: according to Which? magazine, you could save as much as £500 over 100 charges. Cutting down your gas usage isn’t quite as simple, but it’s still possible. Fitting a flow regulator such as the £5 Showersave to your shower slashes the amount of hot water your showers use, and the £25 Radiator BOOster can reduce the time it takes to heat a room, cutting energy usage in the process. Shower flow reducers can reduce your bills if you’re on a water meter too, as can the Hippo water saver, which reduces the amount of water used to flush your toilet. For really big savings on gas, give some thought to a new boiler: by replacing a D-rated boiler with an A-rated one, you could save around £181 per year in a typical detached house. If that’s a step too far, don’t forget the obvious, affordable options: you’ll save a fortune by insulating your house if its current insulation isn’t up to scratch and by turning the thermostat down a notch. You’ll find that energy efficiency work is often subsidised by government grants, and you might even be able to have it done for free. . VVoice

Seasonal recipe Mediterranean Fish Bake Ready in 50 minutes Serves 4
This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh flavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but the meaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fillet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices. Ingredients: • 2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good quality fruity one) • 350g small new potatoes, halved • 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 225g small plum tomatoes, halved • 4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g) • 50g butter, softened
• Pared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve • 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Tip Replace the peppers with sliced courgettes, chunks of celery and baby button mushrooms, if liked.

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once. Add the peppers and tomatoes to the roasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Make a space in the tin and add the monkfish fillets. Return the roasting tin to the oven for 10 minutes. Dot the butter over the fish fillets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender. Slice each monkfish fillet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges.. . VVoice

Weed Attack
by Pippa Greenwood Ask a dictionary the definition of a weed and you’ll
read that it’s ‘a plant growing in the wrong place’. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multi-pronged attack strategy.
Off with their Heads
Whatever the weed problem, it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed. Make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to set seed. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth.
Stop Stowaways
When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those pesky weed stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta).
Spaghetti roots
Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and far-reaching underground stems or roots. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots in to little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process.
Lawn Louts
Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best, albeit slow, methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisygrubber tool.
Deep Rooted Problems
Some weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run.
Laying Carpet
For large areas, try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fluffy side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start
42
to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fibres, not synthetic or else you’ll be left with it in the soil, and for allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet.
Time it Right
Some weeds such as the purple flowered oxalis spread by forming tiny ‘bulbils’ or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out now, the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then.
Hoe, hoe, hoe
An old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. They’re a great way to weed your garden, especially if it’s largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly.
Careful what you Compost
Only compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any flowering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening products including Pippa’s favourite weeder, Nemaslug, Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece and lots more besides. . s your mattress over 7 years old, saggy or just not as comfortable as it used to be? Putting off replacing it can lead to disturbed sleep, morning tiredness, stiff neck and back ache. The Better Life Lawn to be Wild by Derek Thompson
Cutting the grass seems such a waste of time
to me. Just like fingernails, toenails and hair (if you’re lucky), it’ll only grow back again. True, it’s a valuable addition to the compost, but that’s about it. Whereas, one of the things I love most about the garden as a whole is its adaptability. Yes, it’s an ecosystem and a natural habitat, but it’s also something more: a blank canvas just waiting for my often ill-thought-out ideas. Bored with grass? (And, by grass, I mean patches of grass among the swathes of dandelions.) There’s a remedy for that - simply put down bark chips. Worried that the bees and butterflies need more encouragement to stay and thrive? Easy peasy - grow more flowers and grow a variety to suit different insects. And while you’re about it, make sure you provide a shallow source of water so they can drink. We wanted to take the whole rural thing a stage further (no, not a tractor - it wouldn’t fit through the gate), and decided to create a meadow. Or rather, with our garden: a mini meadow. First, I dug out a rough circle - and believe me, it was rough. Next, with the turf removed, we put down a layer of 50 / 50 soil and sharp sand. We brought in native wildflower seeds and some from Flanders’ poppies, which came impregnated on paper rolls. Some judicious scissor work to patchwork the sections, soak with water and then another layer of soil and sand. Naturally, the cat supervised the proceedings, technically outranking Anne as chief observer. Porsha’s presence was also a timely reminder to put netting over the circle from the beginning. After that, it’s a case of occasional watering, watching and waiting. The seeds stir into life very quickly. Try as you might though, it’s nigh on impossible to stop the daisies from encroaching over the edges. Maybe they’re just arriving early to the party. The edges of the garden are largely wild (and some of the neighbours are probably furious), a rather fetching tangle of lords and ladies, buttercups and grasses, with seasonal appearances from bluebells, columbines, foxgloves and pulmonaria. We also have something we know as Mrs West, but have never been able to identify properly - so much for the power of the internet. The joy of having wild garden areas is the same sense of excitement as buying lucky bags as a child. Only, in
52
this case, instead of a disappointing car with a broken wheel, the surprise might be scarlet pimpernel, wild strawberries (Anne’s not keen - she says they take over), or dog violets. And even today we argue over speedwell vs. forget-me-nots in an identity parade. We haven’t gone entirely au naturel. Having previously installed a few raised beds, Anne opted for violas (Avril Lawson), geums (Mrs Bradshaw) and bellis. None of which explains the catmint we planted near the front gate, principally to see whether Porsha would appreciate it. Strangely, while she loved it when it was a mere kittenmint in the conservatory, she treats it with indifference now it’s out in the open. Not to worry though; if last year was anything to go by, she’ll love the next butternut squash plant. . VVoice

The future? If you believe you have an infected tree there is no requirement to notify the authorities , we advise a qualified arborist is sought to confirm and advise on possible options. If the tree has to be removed due to the hazards of limb failure then care must be taken to dispose of materials including burning or composting affected leaves and timber. DEFRA are investigating the range of possible treatments that could slow or stop the fungicide spreading, there is a concern that the disease may be resistant to some of these treatments. The trees cannot be vaccinated against chalara yet. In the future both with Ash and other trees we may need to “quarantine” imported trees and have much stricter controls on tracking international tree movements rather like that in Australia and New Zealand. . Big Arts Weekend
Photographic and Arts Exhibition – Entries invited
N M B C
Pho and Exh Ent
The weekend of 18th-20th October will see New
Malden Baptist Church host its first “Big Arts Weekend”. We are anticipating an exciting mix of events, workshops and exhibitions to celebrate the creative arts and bring together like-minded people from our local community. For some time now we have been running a craft group on a friday evening. Under Fiona and Ron’s leadership this has grown into an enthusiastic group and this inspired us to be more adventurous, putting together a programme with something for everyone over a whole weekend, hence the Big Arts Weekend! The first aim of the weekend is to celebrate the gift of artistic expression in several of its different guises. The second aim is to bring people together in community as they explore their creative gifts together, whether it be discovering a new skill for the first time, or building on previous experience and expertise. We are conscious how fortunate we are to have many gifted people within our wider church family and have drawn on their skills in developing the programme for the weekend. We have also been able to recruit professionals and semiprofessionals to ensure that the content will be high quality. Throughout the weekend we will be holding an exhibition of art and photography and, as we go to press, we already have some fantastic contributions. We are keen to receive exhibition entries from anyone in the local community. There will be a craft evening on the friday night, followed by a day of practical workshops on the Saturday. We wanted to have something for everyone, so in the morning our workshops are geared more for adults whilst in the afternoon, there will be lots of fun activities for younsters. Highlights in the morning include a creative writing workshop with a published author and a digital photography workshop, as well as craft and singing. In the afternoon, the Rah Rah Theatre Company will be taking our 2-6 year olds on a “Rainy Day

Dad’s Diary Letter from America by Ian Duncan
People, when they first come to America, whether as
travellers or settlers, become aware of a new and agreeable feeling: that the whole country is their oyster. Alistair Cooke Ah the joys of wireless broadband, unavailable in deepest Devon or darkest Norfolk, but available, at no cost, in every coffee shop, fast food joint and condominium in the land of the free. So, I sit composing this with a bottle, bejewelled with condensation, of America’s finest beer in hand; sitting on the dock of the bay with just a grey pelican and some 50lb fish for company. The sky is blue, as it has been all day, and a gentle breeze ruffles the palm trees. It’s 8pm in Key Largo and the temperature is still 82F. Chance to reflect on the experience of our summer vacation and a few of the differences between the US and the UK.
1.Theme Parks. These would be fantastic if it wasn’t for the other people. What a scam: charge people a fortune, say $55, to get in; then charge them to park; then cram so many in that the queues get so ridiculously long (100 minutes for Minion Mayhem anyone?) that you charge
them an obscene additional amount, say $70, to queue jump! 2.God Bless Americans - only in Florida do I feel like the slimmest man in the world. Now I realise that there is a huge imbalance in the price of fresh food vs prepared food in the UK but in the US that imbalanced seems to be exaggerated - the price of a huge packet of processed junk, with a list of chemical ingredients the length of your arm, is next to nothing compared to the price of fresh vegetables and fruit. It also seems that there is a more relaxed attitude to what you can spray fruit and veg, we have an apple, bought over 2 weeks ago that looks just the same now as then. You also don’t appear to be able to buy

Sally Harris
Hypnotherapist Every patient is treated individually with Empathy and Understanding
Mrs Sally Harris anything in small quantities - a gallon of milk and a 2lb tub of butter or a cake that is capable of feeding a family of 4 for a day. 3.Everyone is so so friendly, warm and welcoming. The service is fantastic: compare the wonderful Donna, she of the belly laugh, warm smile, spot on recommendations and continuous fill ups, our bright a breezy waitress at Robbie’s Marina with the surly Monmartre waitress who sneered at our attempts at French but was quite happy to charge us a mouthwatering (!) €12 for a coke.
4.Turning right at a red light if there is no one coming. What a great idea.
5.Overtaking on the right and the left on the freeway:
seems like a good idea at first then you realise that if you get in the wrong lane at the wrong time no quarter is given and its every man for himself - just like the Periphique around Paris. 6.Measurements: the American’s are obsessed, they know the dimensions of everything, whether it’s the contents of a beer bottle (12 fluid ounces), the weight of a steak 8 ounce, or the size of a house (John Travolta’s place in Clearwater is apparently 40,000 square feet, excluding the visitor’s villa, tennis courts and swimming pools, which is, I think a little bigger than a 4 bedroom semi in New Malden - and a little more expensive at $41 million.) But they do measure everything imperially, lovely feet, pounds and inches, the metrically trained daughters are so confused. 7.They speak English, so there are no translation issues - since when did men wear suspenders? Have a nice day y’all. VVoice
