Welcome to Your Worcester Park Life Not long to go until the 2016 Summer Olympics - officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, and commonly known as Rio 2016 - begin. And what a challenge for Brazil to top the atmosphere and production of London 2012. I am guessing carnival theme for the opening ceremony... what do you think? Although we’ll all need an afternoon nap or a means to record it because the ceremony doesn’t start until 1am London time. I’m really looking forward to watching as much as we can, having missed out four years ago as we were away on a TV free holiday for most of it. Very bad planning! Whatever you’re up to in August let’s hope that the Rio suunshine isn’ t the only that we see. More good weather please... Remember that Worcester Park Life is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. You may or not know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of Worcester Park, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, the libraries, Manor Drive surgery, St Marys and also Christ Church with St Philip but don’t forget that it is also published online you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes and have a great summer!

Worcester Park History Bowling along to an 80th anniversary by David Rymill This year sees the 80th anniversary of Cuddington Bowling Club, based in one of Worcester Park’s public open spaces, Cuddington Recreation Ground, between Sandringham Road and Sparrow Farm Road. The history of Cuddington Rec goes back to March 1928 when the Cuddington Parish Meeting (the meeting of parishioners of the civil parish of Cuddington which at that time included the area between the railway line and Central Road as well as the present Cuddington Ward and nearby area) passed a resolution encouraging ‘the Parish Council to proceed with the consideration of the acquisition of suitable land in the Parish for the purpose of a Recreation Ground’; this was carried with 20 in favour and none against. In December 1931 Cuddington Parish Council learnt that the purchase of 24 acres of land for a recreation ground at Sparrow Farm was proceeding satisfactorily. The land chosen includes the source of the Beverley Brook, which later runs alongside Green Lane on its way to Motspur Park, Coombe, Richmond Park, Barnes and the Thames. In February 1933 the General Purposes Committee of the Sutton and Cheam council, which was in the process of taking over the Parish Council’s responsibilities for this area, chose the name Cuddington Recreation Ground; I understand that this was to commemorate the Parish Council and its role in securing the land. That summer it was decided that two lower fields beside Park Road, as Sandringham Road was called at that time, were most suitable for early development as playing areas, and all the fields at the Rec were mown with a long-grass machine. By 11th September a draft layout plan had been prepared with land allocated for cricket, football, etc.
6
This part of Worcester Park, between the railway line, Central Road, Oaks Avenue and Sparrow Farm Road, was served by a very active residents’ association, the Stoneleigh Park and Cuddington
Residents’ Association. The Association was enthusiastic in organising social activities, many of which took place in the Rec, situated at the heart of the Association’s area of coverage. Mr H B Jones, who became Chairman in March 1934, and Mr J E Percy who joined the Executive Committee in about 1934 and was Secretary from 1939 to 1952, had been among those involved in the formation of a Cricket Club in 1934; in 1936 they were active in starting a Bowls Club. The club began, therefore, with the support and sponsorship of the SP&CRA, but later took on an independent existence as Cuddington Bowling Club, its present name. At this time the district had its own local newspaper, the Worcester Park Times, which gives several updates on the progress of the club, and of the green which would become its home. On 1st Feb 1936 the paper announced that the green was ready for turfing. When the club was formed in 1936, it was presumably hoped that the green would become available that year, but on 1st August the Worcester Park Times conveyed the news that ‘it will not be possible to open the green this season.’ On 17th April 1937 an article in the Worcester Park Times, headed ‘Stoneleigh Park and Cuddington Bowling Club’, announced ‘We are now within measurable distance of the official opening of the new green… on May 1st. A match with the Borough Council has been arranged for the occasion, but there will also be ample time and opportunity for friendly play between old and

new members… A very attractive fixture list has been arranged, although the committee has wisely decided not to attempt too ambitious a programme in its second season and the first on its home green.’ This confirms that the club was indeed founded in 1936 and, presumably, was actively playing matches in that year, even though the home ground at Cuddington Rec was not available until May 1937. Whether in 1936 they had only played away matches, or had temporarily used another green – perhaps Worcester Park Athletic Club’s facilities in Green Lane – is as yet unclear We might know much more about the club’s early years if some early copies of the SP&CRA’s newsletter, The Gazette, could be tracked down. Some editions for 1978-84 are held at Surrey History Centre (ref 6835/4/12) but I have only found four earlier editions, and none dated before 1957, although it began in 1933. Do any WPL readers have any copies in their attics? The club’s recent achievements include coming second in 2015 in the East Surrey area Tons League, made up of clubs with the element ‘ton’ in their

names, such as Chessington, Carshalton, Carshalton Beeches and Wallington. Cuddington welcomes visitors to come along and watch a match while having a cup of tea; alternatively, to arrange an introductory bowls session, ring Mark Broughton, the Treasurer, on (020) 8337 9699, or the President, Norman Bull, on (020) 8337 8118. Members of the public wishing to play bowls on a temporary basis can apply to the pavilion when play is in progress. The club’s website at www.cuddingtonbc.freeuk. com provides more information. I am grateful to Tony Thomas, editor of the club’s newsletter The Cuddington Courier, for drawing my attention to the club’s anniversary and for his help with this article. Our illustration this month is a postcard showing the bowling green, probably in 1949. Finally, turning our attention from an 80th to a 150th anniversary, St Mary’s Church, Cuddington, at the top of The Avenue, is again planning to participate in the nationwide Heritage Open Days scheme. The church will be open on Saturday 10th September, from 11am to 5pm. As well as giving you a chance to look round the building, this year’s event will feature displays marking the 150th anniversary (a few weeks early) of the opening of the Iron Church that preceded St Mary’s, and telling the 150-year story of The Avenue, Royal Avenue, St Mary’s Road and Cleveland Road; we hope to include a photograph or drawing of each pre-1910 house that existed in these roads (there are a few gaps still, but we are getting there). Ring 020 8330 6563 for more details. This 300page book tells the story of Worcester Park from the Iron Age to the present day, and includes memories of local life from 1908 onwards, and over 150 maps, photographs and drawings - mostly never published before.

Ruth Jemmett Writes things!
It’s Lughnasadh Time Ruth Jemmett shares the delights of August with us August is the eighth month of the year, and the sixth month of the Roman calendar. It is named after the Roman Emporer Augustus. When you read the title of this article you probably thought I was attempting to write the piece in Welsh, or I had lost my marbles! The word ‘Lughnasadh’ actually refers to an ancient festival held in honour of an ancient god called Lugh, which became synonymous with Lammas, the celebration of the wheat harvest. It has an IrishGaelic and Scottish-Gaelic connection. The AngloSaxons called the month of August ‘Weodmonath’the month of weeds. It seems that the title is very apt here in Salisbury Road, as the continual rain this summer has provided us with millions of the darned

Apparently June this year was one of the wettest ones on record, which helped seedlings of all varieties to grow prolifically. On then plus side we don’t have a drought, but you can sometimes have too much of a good thing! (See pic of my flooded garden!). I mustn’t complain, as my seven tomato plants look wonderful! The new fish in the Jemmett pond have settled in nicely, and although initially I couldn’t see frogspawn in the pond, there are now little frogs and toads leaping around the garden. I recently heard that a neighbour has installed a hot tub in their garden. I can’t run to that expense myself. Perhaps I will have to settle for throwing a hot water bottle in the pond! My raspberry net was a good investment, as I have had a wonderful crop of fruit. My greenhouse is mainly used for cuttings, and I take great delight in planting my own plants, instead of paying exorbitant prices at nurseries! This month is usually dreaded by journalists, as big stories are thin on the ground. This month, and indeed this year, will certainly not need special stories, as Brexit has dominated the media for ages, and will continue to give editors plenty of copy to play with for a long time to come. On the 11th of August you might want to look to the skies, as The Perseids Meteor Shower, which eminates from The Swift Tuttle Comet, will make its yearly appearance. As a keen amateur astronomer I find meteor showers can be not only awe-inspiring, but also irritating and unpredictable! Firstly you need a clear dry night, and then you usually have to wait until the early hours to get a good view of proceedings. The meteors can arrive singly or in showers, often several minutes apart. You need a lot of patience and fast moving eyes. You often have to try and keep awake to see the best of them! My best sighting ever was a few years ago, when I saw a low green meteor whizzing high above Salisbury Road, making a whooshing noise before it exploded as it hit the earth’s atmosphere. I admit that I am a bit of a nerd, and find it quite thrilling! I am always amazed that Astronomy is not taught as part of the school curriculum, as it encompasses, geography, chemistry and physics, and because we have stars and planets all around us, children have the evidence of living science right in front of

them, encouraging them to find out more about our amazing universe. There will be two Bank Holidays this month - one one 1st August, and the other on 29th August. Bank Holidays as we know them, have only been in existence since 1871. The 28th and 29th of August will be the time of The Notting Hill Carnival, which began in1966, and is one of the world’s largest street parties, attracting at least a million people. It is one of those events that people love or hate. Residents in that area often feel besieged by alcohol or drug driven behaviour, and some of them get away from Notting Hill during those two days, to escape from the constant noise! Sometimes rainy weather descends on the event, but what are a few soggy feathers and sequins between friends?! This is, of course, the month of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Athletes of all descriptions have been training hard, but unfortunately the cloud of the Zika Virus hangs over the event. The mosquito-borne virus can result in babies being born with small heads and various associated disabilities. How sad that such a positive occasion could be marred by such a thing. Good luck to all the contestants who have the courage to go there to compete, and even more good luck to the families who are affected by such a life-changing disease. On 13th of August it will be International LeftHanders’ Day. As a ’leftie’ myself I am frequently annoyed by the fact that the world is generally designed for ’righties’! After all, we account for ten percent of the population. When I was at my junior school in the 1950s, an ancient nun called Sister Attracta (yes - we children thought it was a weird name too!) would frequently get irate with me. In those far off days children had to dip nibbed pens into an inkwell, and as a ’leftie’ my work was soon covered in black blobs! I have learnt to adapt to the ’rightie’ world, and it has made me somewhat ambidextrous - through necessity! Household implements are often designed with ‘righties’ in mind, which makes ‘lefties’ inventive - but also somewhat annoying! Being ‘sinister’ can be caused by genetics or environmental factors. My own family had several ‘lefties’ in it, and I am pleased to say that famous fellow ‘lefties’ have included Leonardo Da Vinci, the artist Toulouse Lautre, the composer Benjamin Britten, Albert Einstein, and Winston Churchill. Even Prince William is one of our gang! So the next time you see someone awkwardly trying to use a right-handed cheque-book ( I found out late in life that there is a left-handed version!), try not to
12
mock them. They might be the next Leonardo! Sport boasts many ‘leftie’ achievers, but strangely they only account for 4% of high ranking golfers. Enjoy this month for all its worth, because although the hottest days tend to be in August, it won’t be long before the leaves on the trees in Worcester Park start to flutter down, and the flowers start to fade. As a dedicated catalogue woman I noted that one I received yesterday has adverts for Christmas Cards in it! Enjoy those barbecues while you can!

Music Brand New: The Malden Youth Orchestra The Malden Chamber Orchestra is an active musical reality in South-West London, who plays an important role in recruiting adult players with grade 3-6 at an orchestral instrument, and training them to play as an ensemble into a vibrant orchestral environment. The Malden Chamber Orchestra (formerly Malden Centre Orchestra) has been rehearsing and performing for over four decades, attracting literally hundreds of participants from the New Maden area and the surrounding communities: it caters primarily for mature people willing to share their passion for classical music. The orchestra meet Thursday mornings at the Malden Centre (Blagdon road, New Malden), during term time, rehearsing and performing a wide repertoire which span from major classical symphonies, to overtures and ballet music, and to celebrated music-hall and show tunes. The arrival of its new musical director in 2016 has marked a new era, which has seen the orchestra increasing the number of players, reaching out to the local community, creating its own website, fostering a new approach to technique and repertoire and enlarging the music library: the successful Christmas concert has gathered almost 300 people for the event, and has collected hundreds of pounds to donate to the local office of the Salvation Army. Now the orchestra is taking a step forward with its new project which branches out to youngsters: from September 2016 the all brand new Malden Centre Youth Orchestra will start, opening the doors to young players aged 10-21, with different grades of ability at an orchestral instrument - strings, winds and brass- (percussion players, please enquire with the conductor before enrolling). Its mission is to establish a music legacy through a local orchestra of outstanding level composed of dedicated young musicians: t will teach youngs to play within a group and to develop their musicianship and creativity in order to achieve high musical standards. The Youth Orchestra project wants to provide its participants with a regular opportunity to meet and play together, to learn the classical symphonic repertoire, to increase awareness of the musical aspects, to enrich, inspire and serve the local community, also to develop new friendships and engage with contemporary culture.
The Malden Youth Orchestra will rehearse on Thursday afternoons after school, 5-7 pm at the Malden Centre, during school terms. The formula which has proved successful is to make the music playing lively and enjoyable, in a safe and friendly environment: this is an exciting opportunity to develop technical skills on the instrument and to learn new musical competences by playing in an ensemble. To enquire about terms and fees and to enrol on the course, please contact the The Malden Centre reception desk, 020 8336 7770.

View from the City by Justin Urquhart Stewart 7IM Soap Opera or Serious Opportunities? The Saga of Sixteen The summer months of 2016 are likely to be remembered as much for their astonishing theatre as for their facts. From changing political leadership to party disputes; from economic growth to the breakdown of existing trading structures. Frankly if it could change, it would change. So, time to take a step back from the hyperbole of the headlines—all of which are only designed to heighten our nerves and fears–and note that the economy is still functioning, markets are still enjoying some upwards momentum (although not to the levels seen before 23 June) and the UK still exists…at least for the time being. While the fluctuations of the stock market may cause concern among the feint hearted, they do offer up some investment opportunities such as when assets become oversold. Politically though, we are now in a shadowland between the referendum and some form of ’neverendum‘ where no one can be quite sure what the policies are going to be for the next year. At least we have a new prime minister who seems capable of substantive leadership. That in itself is a positive for any economy. However the effects of what is meant by Brexit are still going to be unclear for some time to come. There is, of course, just one word that runs any economy and that is confidence. Thus, the effect of the referendum result was to send a shudder through the UK economy and diminish confidence in its continuing growth. We have already felt the frisson of fear that rippled through following the downgrade of our economic prospects by the IMF, and, although much was blamed on the referendum, concerns about the strength of our economy had been voiced beforehand. This latest and other

gloomy forecasts have in turn led to a greater state of nerves about the UK economy and are probably providing an excuse for some investments and developments to be curtailed or frozen…at least for the time being. Two City developments that I have been aware of have already been held back, and their future may well depend on the result of any negotiations that would determine whether certain financial functions stay in London or seep elsewhere…together with the contribution to GDP they generate. The question as to whether our economy can sustain at least some degree of ongoing positive momentum will depend upon the political decisions being made under this new administration with their Brexit mandate. Confidence behind successful economies is, to a great extent, built on momentum, and thus any interference in this momentum will effect both confidence and growth, especially in the short term. We were already in a somewhat fragile post-financial crash environment before the vote, and our economy more than ever needs to be carefully nurtured like a small fire, and not left to be blown out by the winds of dismal economic forecasts. If therefore we can see a continuation of a positive view towards business then we can be encouraged. If, however, the wave of cynicism were to grow, then 2017 may well be a fulcrum year for the economy as it may tip over into a period of lower or even negative growth. The Eurozone (on the other side of the Brexit decision) may not necessarily see these developments in such a negative light. Among certain groups, it could really be quite positive if certain financial structures saw a greater focus closer to home. Despite the failings of the Italian banking system, the Eurozone economy has shown itself to be in reasonable shape at its core, and certainly much better than many have been predicting. This is an encouraging sign for investors. Over the summer months, meanwhile, it has been the US economy that seems to have defied the credibility of many commentators. Despite the naysayers, the US economy actually seems to be in quite good fettle. Although there have been some expected fears and concerns over the potential

presidency of the follically-mesmerising Trump, the growth, employment and wealth generation of the US has been something to admire. Then I must also mention the question of China. Yet again we have to push aside the populist protestations of politicians raising concerns over the likes of the South China Sea disputes. The truth is that the Chinese economy is still growing and, although that is at a somewhat slower rate than before, it is at a more realistic level and is still generating real growth and demand. So, after a summer of political and economic turmoil and revolutions, it is all too easy to be scared away from looking at the real position of the global economy. Despite our own efforts of causing the selfinflicted and unnecessary pain of Brexit, the global economy is still growing. For the UK, some concerning issues will be thrown up for us to address at least in the short term. For the rest of the globe, it will, seemingly despite our own best efforts, continue to prosper and do well - and we would be well advised to participate in it.

Clubs Five years of square dancing around sSoneleigh Five years ago Granville Spencer, a Square Dance caller moved to Worcester Park and set up a new club named Hogsmill Squares to reflect our local river! Amazingly, 90% of the dancers who stayed the first year are still dancing with us and still learning something new every week. We now have over a hundred square dancers meeting regularly in this area, enjoying the exercise, the friendships, the social events, the laughter when things go astray and sense of achievement when a dance goes well. Some of our members spent a day and a half filming for an episode of Call the Midwife, in which Granville was the Caller at the Square Dance and we danced with the stars! Square dancing involves teamwork as it takes 8 people to make up a square with the Caller leading the dancers through the movements carefully making sure everybody understands. The great thing is that there are no long dance routines to learn – just the individual moves, a bit like structured barn dancing without the skipping The more moves you learn the more interesting it gets and the more fun everyone has especially when things go a bit wrong!
Square dancing is truly international as it is danced throughout the world, using the exact same moves, and these are always called in English. Granville, and his wife Wendy, have danced at clubs in such diverse locations as Florida, Copenhagen, Bratislava, Vienna, Paris and numerous towns in Germany! This August, several members will be dancing at the European Convention in Stratford-upon-Avon with over 800 dancers from 17 different countries including Russia, China, Norway and Australia. On Tuesday, September 6th, Hogsmill Square Dance Club is holding a FREE taster session at St John’s Parish Centre, Station Approach, Stoneleigh KT19 0QZ from 7.00-8.30pm - come along and see how much fun exercise can be – your Tuesdays evenings may never be the same again! If you cannot make September 6th, student classes will continue on the following Tuesdays 13th & 20th September at the same venue. Going forward we plan to meet every Tuesday (on the 4th Tuesday in the month we meet at the Shiraz Mirza Community Centre, Manor Park, Malden Road, New Malden, KT3 6AU). We will be happy to accept new students until the first week in October. If you are unsure or require further information please do not hesitate to contact Granville and Wendy Spencer on Tel: 02035 567449, Mob: 07752 431721or
You needn’t worry about having two left feet – anybody can Square Dance as the movements are very simple and rhythmical – the hardest thing is knowing your left from your right – which is not as easy as it may seem! Granville came to his first Square Dance lesson saying “If we go once, we can tell them we don’t like it, then they won’t ask us again!” Of course, he loved it from the very first dance: grace and style, skipping and hopping are not required, but his sense of direction and appreciation of formation and order gave him a good start. Our children were just old enough not to need a baby sitter as we enjoyed our 2 hours learning a new hobby together. Square dancing is great fun for couples, singles and families and provides an interactive social evening. It combines physical and mental stimulation for people of all ages and provides a “well being” effect as you join in with other people, make new friends and master new skills. All the moves are easy to learn with everybody helping each other along the way – it is often called fun and friendship set to music. This music being drawn from a wide range of tastes including new and classic pop, jazz, country and western, rock and roll etc.

The Life List Unwritten Rules Adult life is complicated. School may have taught us about quadratic equations, Pythagoras, and coping with a broken heart, but there are areas of expertise where we are still in the dark. How long does one keep the box for an electrical appliance or an electronic device? I’m running out of attic space. What’s the optimum number of toys for a pet dog? How many does it really need and is there one I can accidentally stand on without injury? At what age should a man start wearing patterned socks in an unironic way? (I’ve finally accepted the no ‘socks with sandals’ ruling.) When is the best time to develop an interest in
historical TV dramas? Does it usually coincide with the desire to make up a cheeseboard? How old is too old for expecting or receiving Easter eggs? How long should one wait after Christmas before putting unwanted gifts on eBay or donating them to a charity shop 20 miles away? What are the social repercussions of unfriending someone on social media, who you also know in the real world, due to their constant stream of upbeat platitudes? How does one tackle a neighbour’s cat that persists in seeing your prize flowerbeds as a latrine? Are there any guidelines for flatulence in enclosed spaces - a lift, a canal boat, a small car, a pod on the London Eye, etc.? How does one respond to work collections for people you barely know, or who you know too well to want to contribute? By Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk

Recipe Salmon And Broccoli Quiche A rich and creamy quiche packed full of succulent salmon flakes and broccoli. Serve warm or cold with a crisp green leaf salad. Serves 6 Ready in: 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling and cooling 250g shortcrust pastry 300g salmon fillets 200g small broccoli florets 4 large eggs 250ml double cream 100ml milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper 50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated 1 Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 2 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled
pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5. 3 Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender. 4 Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5 Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.
Tip Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture.

IN THE NEWS
A NEW ERA
Every day we speak to a lot of people, from all walks of life, varying nationalities and from across the globe. Vendors, overseas landlords, buyers, tenants, investors, surveyors and solicitors. Whilst the mainstay of those conversations will be property related we often glean other news. The hot topics are usually weather or sports related so you will not be surprised to learn that recent rainfall, the promise of a Spanish plume driven warm spell, England’s tussle with Iceland and Andy Murray’s victory have all been discussed at length. It’s quite normal for major sporting events to result in a couple of quieter weeks in the office, and it will come as no revelation that during the England vs Wales match we had a period of telephone silence which was welcomed by those members of our staff who had their phones propped up in a corner of their desk silently streaming the match. The more avid football watchers had, of course, speedily booked their afternoon off to “enjoy” the match elsewhere!
Putting it simply, we don’t know what will happen next in the post EU era, and we won’t know for some time. That isn’t really very helpful, we know. Until official figures are published nobody will really know, though we will have a fair idea several months before the statistics catch up with what is happening right now.
The last month however has been dominated by politics. We are writing nearly three weeks since the Brexit vote and nobody can escape the fact that it has been a turbulent political time. Before the referendum people pondered the outcome, especially as the vote drew near, but immediately the result was known it became the leading subject. We have spoken to people who are delighted, dismayed and tentative in pretty much equal measure and naturally everybody we speak to wants to know how it will affect the property market.
We experienced a quieter period which started just before the referendum, and during the Euro 2016, which has lasted to date, though there are early signs of that breaking. As a property sale takes a few months to move from valuation to completion, and there are a number of phases between, it’s worth considering each stage. Valuations are at the normal seasonal level so property is coming onto the market. A month ago viewing days were packed solid, there was then a lull but by the second week in July we were back to the pre Brexit diary juggling act trying to squeeze everybody in. Offers are still being made. We have had a few cheeky ones, and one impressively bold offer, from speculative buyers who hope to grab a bargain, but all of these have been outbid by offers at or close to asking prices. Sales chains have been moving slowly this year, for a variety of reasons, and we therefore anticipate a very busy summer for removals firms, but to date all are going according to plan. We’ve had no Brexit withdrawals. Our current experience is that those that are ‘thinking’ about moving are less inclined to be active in the market at the moment but committed buyers and sellers remain keen and prices are holding firm.

Gardening Plan your planting Pippa Greenwood
Many gardens are now looking a little tired, as summer flowers try hard to put on a reasonable show despite the tougher conditions and the fact that their season is drawing to a close. It is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees, as the soil tends to be fairly dry, so you can’t even make things look better with a shrub or two. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring - right now garden centres are starting to take delivery of huge quantities of fabulous bulbs, just ready for planting, and a sure fire way to get your garden looking fabulous in those first few months of next year, and indeed for years to come. Get down to the garden centre sooner rather than later, so that you can have the pick of the bunch. Many bulbs will actually start to put down roots at the back end of summer and into autumn, giving them a head start and ensuring a fabulous display in spring, so prompt planting is advisable. The only thing you need to delay is the planting of tulips; these are best planted in October to help them avoid a nasty infection called tulip fire. Don’t forget that many mail order catalogues are available and these have an even bigger array of bulbs, often including many of the more unusual varieties, so send off for a few of these to ensure you have something particularly special to enjoy - and to show off to your friends and neighbours! If ordering from catalogues you will need to get a move on, however, so send off for a few as soon as possible. Then enjoy putting your feet up with a cuppa and a pile of catalogues, ready to choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before you set off to the garden centre, take a look at your borders - and indeed anywhere else in the garden - and decide where you can cram in a few bulbs. Remember, the great thing is they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, and so they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of garden soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year. Many bulbs do really well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be under-planted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to plant in these tight
40
spaces and that way you’ll minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots. If you are new to using bulbs and feel unsure of what goes together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and even some garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. Have you got a dull patch of lawn? Brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Things like crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have too much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure that the grass beneath these trees or shrubs is not something you want to keep regularly mown, as you will have to wait for at least six weeks after flowering before you can safely remove the leaves of the daffodils. When choosing bulbs, always make sure they are in good condition before you buy. With a quick look through the packaging (bulbs are often hidden by large quantities of sawdust or wood shavings) you should be able to find the bulbs itself. Avoid any which are showing even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or the presence of patches of bluish mould on their surface. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety so, if possible, choose really good sized plump ones. If you want to buy large quantities of the same variety, then it may be possible to buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. Ideally bulbs should be planted promptly, but if this isn’t possible make sure that you keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating.

Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting!

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams Near To Home. When the weather permits I take a stroll around the neighbourhood. My favourite local walks take in Shadbolt and Auriol Parks, and the green field and woodland edge behind Royal Avenue and St Mary’s church, the Hogsmill Conservation Area behind St John’s, Old Malden and Cuddington Recreation Ground. Usually I take some bags with me and pick up rubbish - sadly there are always too many carelessly dropped cans and bottles. If we care for wild creatures, we should pick these up - so much wildlife gets injured or killed every year, by litter. I look at the grass verges and front gardens as I walk past. ‘Garden’ is a misnomer for so many frontages nowadays - they are often arid areas of paving for cars; not attractive, not useful for wildlife and also a problem in times of heavy rainfall, since they absorb none of the water and contribute to flooding. “Nature doesn’t mind neat” says The One Show’s wildlife expert, Mike Dilger, “what it objects to is sterility”. Precisely - and paved front spaces are sterile. As indeed, are closely mown lawns, whose only advantage over a hard surface is that they absorb a little rain water and have a pleasant, fresh, green colour! The Council mowers have been out in force down my way recently. I can only regard them as wreckers of promising meadow habitat that could succour bees - which, as we all know, are suffering a steep decline, for a complex mix of reasons, one of which is the loss of so much wildflower meadow. I consider this frequent mowing of all the street verges and traffic islands to be a phenomenal waste of time and money and a missed opportunity to help bees and butterflies. The mess the operatives always leave behind on the footways and roads is just another reason to be annoyed at the policy. This week I have seen a verge that was covered in white clover flowers - a nectar rich source- completely destroyed. It was a thing of beauty to me. As were the buttercups that were similarly obliterated by mowers in early May. Then there is the grassed area in Shadbolt Park between The Paddock and the surgery - cut down to nothing in June. It’s now a very dull space, whereas before, when long grasses, buttercups, and many other species of wild plant waved in the breeze, you could walk around the perimeter of it and fancy yourself in a field somewhere rural. Now it is just like

any other dull old grassed area, with very little in it of any value to wildlife. You can’t confine wildlife to small areas that you ‘designate’. That isn’t how Nature thrives at all. We must live in and among the wildness, or it cannot ever thrive as it should. Insects must have forage areas large enough to sustain their numbers. Birds must be able to find an abundance of insects for their nestlings and they must have nest sites (this means hedges and trees). There must be diversity and all the small patches of wilderness must be linked up; you can’t segment it and tidy it into plots like files in a cabinet, neatly labelled. I fear too many people think you can do just this - tuck wildlife away out of sight so it doesn’t ‘mess up’ some nice, clean and tidy bit of space that is just for humans (messy animals and rambling plants strictly keep out!). Neat diversity is fine - neat sterility isn’t. Personally I love the untamedness of Nature left mainly to do its own thing. I would interfere as little as possible. Undisturbed, birds thrive. I love the secluded effect you get when you are surrounded on all sides of your garden by trees and hedges -these plants absorb sound too, which is useful when you live near a busy road. Studies have also shown that a house with a tree outside will benefit from greatly reduced air pollution inside the home. The tree will act like a sort of sponge, mitigating the effects of airborne pollutants. Tree lined streets are not only prettier, they are vastly healthier places to live in as well. Cuddington Park is a perfect example of how an urban recreational space should be managed. It is a joy to walk there. The park has an excellent playground, ball courts and bowling green, open grass for games and picnics, copse, hedgerow and meadow habitat, and even a cycle path through the park. Recently, a small wildlife pond was built. The stream that naturally runs through the park, is, of course, its own wonderful habitat, but I’m very impressed with how the Council manages this park for all needs. I often head here for a bit of time in Nature. Auriol Park lacks water and some meadow habitat. The largest number of bees I have seen recently were on some bramble flowers - I counted at least a dozen. Bramble is a marvellous wildlife plant. It should be allowed some space to flower - the bees and butterflies will appreciate it. Lavender is another

bee magnet. The Friends of Shadbolt Park have two lavender bushes in the bed that they maintain, and here, also, I was delighted to spot a good number of bees. Two front gardens in my road deserve a special mention, as having created beautiful ‘parking space’ - proving that you don’t have to uglify your neighbourhood to take a car off the road. One has a glorious border on one side, full of vibrantly coloured plants, it’s a work of art - the other has lavender along one side ( young plants, but already attracting the bees) and shrubs and a climber on the other. Two other frontages also deserve praise - one in Woodlands Avenue, the other in Fairford Gardens. Here, the residents have created beautiful wild flower meadows. They are a delight, and of enormous benefit to the biodiversity of this area. I might have to start putting ‘awards’ through some letter boxes....!

In my RSPB Summer magazine, I read this ; “ Wildflower meadows planted across Glasgow are providing a boost for the city’s house sparrows, whose numbers plummeted by 90% since the 1970’s.”
Working at the pond area in Shadbolt Park makes me realise how quickly Nature responds when given an opportunity. This is encouraging. It means that even the smallest home can take part in creating some space for wildlife - a window box of wildflowers will do just as well as a tiny patch on the ground. There is also vertical gardening - it is inspiring how some people have created a wonderful wildlife space just on a balcony of a flat in a city. BBC Springwatch this year was encouraging all its viewers to ‘Do Something Great for Nature’. What will you do? k

If all of our larger verges -and every lawn - had a wildflower strip, I am certain we would see a dramatic increase in bird life across urban areas. Our gardens, parks and streets could easily become perfect wildlife habitat. It would be like creating a sort of ‘mini countryside’ in our towns and suburbs. Can we do it? Trees and meadows in every street, park and school - re-creating what was there before the housing estates and roads destroyed so much of it - giving Nature its home back.
