Welcome to Your Worcester Park Life So the December madness is about to begin. I bought my first presents yesterday but am sure, despite best intentions, everything apart from putting trees up (decided a few years ago that I might as well do that at the beginning of the month and be in it for the long run!) will inevitably be last minute and rushed. Maybe this is the year to take a step back and try not to ‘do it all’. Wish me luck with that one and let’s all try to spread a little happiness somewhere unexpected this year. Remember that Worcester Park Life is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event in 2016 and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. You may or not know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of Worcester Park, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, the libraries, Manor Drive surgery, St Marys and also Christ Church with St Philip but don’t forget that it is also published online - you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes,

Jenny

Worcester Park History

St Anthony’s – the story continues by David Rymill

In August we looked at the early history of St Anthony’s Hospital, in the London Road. This month we bring the story down to the present day. If we had stood at the entrance to St Anthony’s grounds, opposite Gander Green Lane, in the mid-20th century, we should have seen the chapel almost directly ahead, the balconied main hospital to the left, and the convent in the former North Cheam House to the right (on the land now occupied by the car park in front of the hospital). Further to the right was St Joseph’s Sanatorium, across part of the site of the Unecol House office block. St Anthony’s became a centre for the training of nurses: the proportion of TB cases was reduced to allow trainees a wider range of experience, and recognition for SRN training was achieved in the early 1930s. After the Second World War – when many victims of bomb damage were treated – the old children’s chalet was converted into a preliminary training school for nurses (new lecture rooms and offices were opened on the site in 1959). In the late 1950s, the hospital also achieved recognition from the Royal College of Surgeons, for senior posts in fellowship training. Around the same time, additional nurses’ accommodation was built, for which a BBC appeal in 1958 by Jean Metcalf (well-known for radio programmes such as Forces’ Favourites) raised nearly £4,500. The inauguration of the NHS in 1948 brought a change in arrangements for funding patient care, with feepaying patients being a small majority by 1950. Sister Mary Teresa, who served at St Anthony’s from 1958 to 1975 (and returned in 1986) recalls that people said the old house “was a draughty old place, but it was quite a picturesque house.” She remembers the system used for summoning particular sisters in the old hospital: a hand bell would be rung in the stairwell, and each of them

6

had a specific ring, such as one, a round, and four, “and somewhere far away you’d think ‘Is that my bell?’” In the 1960s the structure of the 1914-15 hospital building was found to be unsound. On the understanding that the Regional Hospital Board would continue to finance beds for NHS patients, the community drew up plans for a pioneering hospital. Sister Mary Perpetua wrote in 1967 of their aim of combining two innovative features, accommodation in single rooms, and automated systems to save the nurses’ time. They were introduced to Gordon Friesen, a Washingtonbased hospital design consultant, and his concept of a hospital containing self-contained ensuite bedrooms, electrically-operated beds, oxygen available in each room, and a monorail connecting each corridor with a central ‘supermarket’ providing meals and medicines. “What will not change,” commented Sr Mary Perpetua, “is the determination of the sisters to give the sick every conceivable aid in their quest for health.” Plans to build a 300-bed hospital on this basis were thrown into confusion when the Regional board withdrew its support, and the Daughters of the Cross, under Sr Mary Perpetua’s leadership, instead opened an 80-bed private hospital in 1975; this was the first of three phases of construction, the last of which was completed in 1982. To finance the construction of the new hospital, the north-western part of the grounds was sold, and Carters Close, Creston Way, Southwood Close

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

and Handside Close were built here in c.1973 by New Ideal Homes. The developers gave back the convent graveyard located between Carters Close and Creston Way. It has been suggested that Carters Close was named after a resident who had owned a large plot of land in Clarkes Avenue, but I have not been given any suggestions for the reasons for the other three names: can any WPL reader enlighten me? The nuns were determined to continue providing a free service to local people, and this was achieved when St Raphael’s Hospice was opened in the grounds in 1987. To raise the construction costs of over £1 million, Sr Mary Perpetua joined in activities from ‘fun runs’ to darts playing. She told the Sutton Borough Guardian “It’s no use asking the Almighty to help you if you are not prepared to give Him a hand and do some of the work yourself.” In one year, 2007-08, more than 300 in-patients received palliative or end-of-life care in the 14-bedroom ward, and there were over 3000 home visits and 1000 day-centre attendances. In May 2009 the ‘Hospice at Home’ scheme was launched, providing care for those wishing to spend their final hours at home.

Today, St Raphael’s stands on the site of the 1914/15 hospital, with the present hospital (pictured) to the right, behind the site of the original convent. The old convent and chapel were demolished in 1973; St Joseph’s nurses’ home became the new convent, and a chapel was also provided in the new hospital. The St Bede’s Conference Centre was constructed to the left of the hospice, in 1992/3. In 2011 the convent moved to the St Mary’s building (formerly medical staff quarters, built in 1957), and on 1st June 2013 the St Joseph’s building was officially reopened as the new International Generalate, the Order’s worldwide headquarters, transferred from Liège. The hospital was sold to Spire Healthcare in 2014, but some sisters from the St Mary’s Convent continue to visit patients there, as well as in St Raphael’s. On another subject, a brand new family game, exclusive to Worcester Park, would make an original Christmas present for local friends and family. ‘Shop Trumps’ is a card game, based on a well-known format of a similar name, and is approaching release as we go to press. It features cards depicting 40 different local businesses and amenities, including shops, churches and clubs from across the Sutton, Kingston and Epsom & Ewell areas of KT4. All profits will go to a local charity. The idea came from Richard Johnson, with whom I have worked on this year’s Central Road heritage exhibitions, and is supported by Worcester Park’s haart estate agents as major sponsor, with 20 more local traders adding support. The game should be on sale by early December, and further details will be available on the Worcester Park Blog or Richard’s Worcester Park community page on Facebook: Worcester Park, Old Malden and North Cheam: History at our Feet Published in 2012 and available at £10 (plus £2 towards postage if required) from the Rymill family. Ring 020 8330 6563 for more details. This 300-page book tells the story of Worcester Park from the Iron Age to the present day, and includes memories of local life from

Ruth Jemmett Writes Holly, Hyacinths, And Halcyon Days Ruth Jemmett Share Her Thoughts On The Festive Season Despite my best efforts, my garden here in Salisbury Road is losing the battle against the onslaught of winter. Windy weather and rain have reduced my once pristine flower borders to soggy brown messes. As I have been tidying up the garden, I have had my annual fight with a holly bush that threatens to take over anything that gets in its way, and have made the pond look presentable. No fish have died in it recently, so I must be doing something right! I have been doing raking very gingerly, as hedgehogs, that have become an increasingly rare sight here in recent years, sometimes choose to hibernate beneath piles of leaves or compost heaps, and I would hate to injure or kill one by mistake. A couple of months ago one of these endearing creatures ventured into our back garden. By the time I had located my camera to capture its visit, it had vanished. It has been a busy few weeks at Chez Jemmett, as I have tried to get the daffodil and hyacinth bulbs planted into pots before the weather and darker afternoons deter me from leaving the cosiness of the bungalow. The writer Katherine White once said “From December to March, for many of us, there are three gardens: the garden outdoors, the garden of pots and bowls in the house, and the garden of the mind’s eye”. The garden in my mind’s eye is always so much better than the one I see in actuality, but I keep trying to achieve that dream! One of my favourite quotes is from J.M. Barrie, who said: “God gave us memories, so that we might have roses in December”.

have an eyeball to eyeball confrontation! What often follows is reminiscent of a speeded up episode of Tom and Jerry! (See attached pic of the cat lying in wait!).

A lot of people in this country suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder at this time of year, which isn’t surprising, as cold dark days can make the jolliest of people feel very down - and let’s face it, some of the newspaper headlines these days could make Carol Kirkwood feel miserable! Some experts believe that by sitting in front of specialised bright lights the mood can be lightened. Going to a warmer climate for a few months sounds a better option! December is the twelfth month of the year, but it was the tenth month on the Roman calendar, and its name is derived from the Latin word ‘decem’, which means ten. The Anglo-Saxons called this month ‘Wintermonath’. In the Christian church, the weeks preceding Christmas are known as Advent. When I was a child I really looked forward to receiving Advent calendars that had chocolate goodies tucked behind each little cardboard window. They were usually scoffed down long before 25th arrived! We always associate Christmas with snow, but statistically speaking it is a relatively rare event in our neck of the woods. However, in places that have much higher ground, such as Scotland, or the Welsh mountains, it is often a different story. Dylan Thomas once famously said “One Christmas was so much like another, that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve, or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six!” Those of us of a certain age will recall many winters when it snowed, and one can’t help wondering if warnings about global warming are coming home to roost ….

Three squirrels are regular visitors here, and although they look endearingly cute, my love of small animals can wane somewhat when I have an almost daily job of replanting spring bulbs that they have dug up and played with. When they aren’t vandalising pots they are almost permanently hanging from my bird-table, stealing food intended for our feathered friends. Recently there has been another visitor to the bird table - a neighbour’s cat. She positions herself snugly under its roof, awaiting her birdie prey, and frequently traumatises squirrels as they arrive on the table, and To advertise email jenny@maldenmedia.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

When I was a girl I liked to go Carol Singing with my friends. I fondly remember a group of us from our Youth Club going into The Hogsmill Pub here in Worcester Park, and entertaining the patrons with our warbling. As we shook our charity collection boxes to the assembled throng I remember the crackling of logs on the fire in front of us, and thinking how hot I was! Sadly this tradition isn’t as popular as it once was. Unthinking drivers and people behaving strangely due to alcohol or drugs, can now make once safe suburban roads risky places to be after dark. Our local Rotary Club always make an annual Yuletide tour of our roads, and usually have a van that amplifies carols as they make their rounds, but it’s not the same! This is Pantomime season, and we are lucky enough to live in an area that can happily cater for our love of such things at this time of the year. As I come from a theatrical family I didn’t know what it was like not to perform in one of these annual extravaganzas when I was a child. In our family, as soon as you were big enough to toddle on stage it fell to you to don the tinsel, prance around in outlandish costumes, and utter corny lines! A venue called Ebbisham Hall used to exist in Ashley Road in Epsom, and it was there that I made my theatrical debut, with knees knocking! When I first came to live in Salisbury Road in 1982 one of our neighbours was a well-known Pantomime dame,

On 22nd December we arrive at The Winter Solstice, when the hours of darkness are at their longest, and the hours of sunlight are at their shortest. In pagan times this date was celebrated with bonfires and various rituals, that eventually became assimilated into Christmas. In ancient times the seven days preceding this date, and the seven days thereafter were called The Halcyon Days. December is a time for reflection on the previous twelve months. This last year has been a rather distressing one for many of us. Pictures of people fleeing their homelands for a variety of reasons, have filled our television screens and newspapers. Horrifying reports of acts of carnage have become all too commonplace, and those of us who grew up in a relatively peaceful world feel very sad to witness such things. In this country we often cynically joke about the supposed safety of yesteryear - but it is true. When I was young my mother lost the key to our back door, and it was never replaced. I lived in that house for

twenty years, and we were never robbed, and our home was never vandalised. People trusted each other, and were generally kind. As years have passed, and respect for the police, teachers, and religion have diminished, liberal views have made parents and teachers too scared to correct their children. It seems that common sense has vanished. Youngsters carrying knives is commonplace in many inner city areas, and a lot of them spend far too much time looking at hideously violent computer games that teach them that killing is fun. It is surely up to the so-called adults who produce this nonsense to stem its flow, so that future generations will not grow up thinking that human life is cheap. Children are natural imitators, and if we feed their developing minds with negative images, we should not be too surprised if they try and emulate what they see on their screens. As we raise our glasses to each other during this festive season - and also remember with fondness those who are no longer with us - let us hope that the Christmas message of love and peace prevails not only in Worcester Park, but throughout this troubled world. A very Happy Christmas to you all. Ruth Jemmett is a Member of The Society of Authors

Bursting with seasonal stories for all the family by Paul Birch Things are not going well for world famous storyteller Ebeneezer Sneezer. She’s lost. There is snow in his wellies and his wise and faithful dog, Cracker, has some strange ideas about Christmas. Caught taking shelter in Mrs McGinty’s barn, she allows them to stay on condition that Ebeneezer warm-up her Christmas with some of his seasonal stories. If they bring her enough glad tidings there’s a hot supper on the cards. If not they will be thrown back out into the storm.

With Mrs McGinty’s frozen heart in need of a magnificent miracle and Deadly the dastardly donkey ready to kick comfort and joy out of his stable, will Ebeneezer triumph? Despite turbulent turkeys and hysterical hay fights, she has a plan and some tremendous tales to turn things around. So pull open this delightful cracker packed with comedy, puppetry, and seasonal storytelling, as Riding Lights offers the whole family a magical glimpse into the heart of Christmas.

Christmas Finding gifts for the “Nothing I need” Brigade By Kate McLelland

“Don’t buy me anything. There’s nothing I need.” It’s the festive season, and not buying anything just isn’t an option, unless you want to feel like a cross between the Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas morning. But what do you get for those friends or family members who genuinely seem to have everything? I’m not talking a mansion, a yacht and a Ferrari: just all the things required for comfortable, everyday living. There comes a time in everyone’s life when it’s likely that they will have collected all the knick-knacks, gadgets and gizmos they’ll ever need. So what are the options when it comes to buying an original gift for the man or woman who says “There’s nothing I need”? Give a goat At Oxfam (www.oxfam.org.uk) it costs just £25 to buy a goat for a needy family trying to survive in areas affected by war or drought, who can use the gift to produce nutritious dairy products such as milk and cheese. Oxfam also supplies a brightly coloured gift card that explains your purchase. An unforgettable experience If you’ve run out of gift ideas for your nearest and dearest, why not give them an experience? It could be anything from afternoon tea for two at a choice of 70 hotels and restaurants nationwide (£36 from www. redletterdays.co.uk), to a hot air champagne balloon flight for one (from £109 at www.buyagift.co.uk). This isn’t the kind of gift you can keep in your bottom drawer, but the lucky recipient is unlikely to ever forget the sensation of drifting high over the British countryside with a glass of bubbly in their hand. Adopt a rare animal The World Wildlife Fund (now called WWF) has another clever gift idea for people who like to feel they are helping a good cause. Go to www.wwf.org.uk and buy an “adopt a wild animal” pack as a gift. This isn’t an actual adoption – your donation won’t be linked to a specific animal – but the adoption pack does include a cuddly toy version of the chosen species. Go retro Treat them to a retro sweet hamper (£36) or a retro chocolate gift box (£12.95) full of Munchies, Curly Wurlies and other nostalgic goodies, both from www. retrosweets.co.uk. Vintage board games are also

popular: you can buy old games in “as new” condition from online retailers such as eBay and Amazon. Buy a gift voucher It used to be that gift vouchers could only be exchanged at one particular retailer, but those days are long gone. The “Love2Shop” voucher can be spent in over 20,000 UK locations, including restaurants, hotels, spas and leisure resort (www.highstreetvouchers.com). Can’t afford any of the above? If your Christmas gift budget won’t stretch to the items mentioned here, consider giving the gift of your time. Buy a small gift box and enclose a note promising to do something for the recipient: a couple of hours of gardening; baking a cake every week for a month; decorating the spare room. These gifts are a far cry from a boring box of toiletries or a shirt and tie set, and at least you’ll win Brownie points for original thinking. You’ll also avoid the dirty looks and long silences that come from having taken the “Nothing I need” brigade’s protestations a bit too literally!

Clubs Glitters - Your Winter Tonic By Ruth Jemmett During these grey winter days, when dead leaves are swirling and noses are sniffling, isn’t it wonderful to turn on the television, and escape into the world of Strictly? The rain may be falling, and the heating bills may be mounting, but for a few magical hours each weekend millions of people escape into a fantasy world filled with spray tans and sequins. They watch those brave souls who strut their stuff on the dance floor, wishing that they could emulate them. Well, fantasize no longer! Some of those dancers you are watching have never ventured into the world of ballroom before, and you too could transform your life by literally putting your best foot forward. On a couple of Friday evenings for most months of the year, Glitters Dance Club in Spring Street, Ewell Village, opens its doors to social dancers of all levels - and you could be one of them! If you are over eighteen, and would like to do Ballroom or Latin Dancing - whether you are a confident dancer or a nervous beginner, come and join us! Glitters does not give lessons - it is purely a social occasion, hosted by a professional D.J., Mr. Wonderful, and seasoned dancers will be happy to encourage nervous people on to the dance floor!

WORDWHEEL

Using only the letters in the Wordwheel, you have ten minutes to find as many words as possible, none of which may be plurals, foreign words or proper nouns. Each word must be of three letters or more, all must contain the central letter and letters can only be used once in every word. There is at least one word that uses all of the letters in the wheel.

TARGET Excellent: 15 or more words Good: 12 words Fair: 9 words

David Cabot, the organiser, together with sidekicks Shirley and myself, will welcome you to a friendly venue that has a great atmosphere. A full list of the dates of forthcoming dances can be found in the Clubs section at the back of this magazine. Dances start at 8.30 p.m., and finish at ll p.m. At Christmas we have a highly popular ticket- only Dance/Party, which includes a wonderful hot buffet. This year it will be on 18th December. So don’t get glued to that chair. Come and join in a hobby that will improve your health, give you a good social life, and make you forget your cares for a while. Don’t crawl to the doctor asking for a winter pick-me-up. Come dancing! Glitters is the best tonic you can have! See clubs section for more information Nb: Pic shows David, the organiser, plus Ruth and Shirley

After last year’s dreadful weather caused flooding that damaged the hall, it was completely renovated, and now boasts a new fantastic sprung dance floor, state of the art lighting - and, of course, a glitter ball! For the very reasonable price of £8 you can enjoy free parking, a bar, a safe and friendly environment - and you don’t always need to bring a partner! There are several dances during the evening where you can simply mix and mingle. (More men are always welcome, as they can be shy about joining. Once with us, they love it!).

Recipe Marmalade and mustard glazed gammon Glazed gammon is a Christmas favourite – delicious hot from the oven as a festive supper or served cold as part of the Boxing Day buffet! Serves 6-8 Ready in 2 hours 45 minutes, plus cooling 2.5kg smoked gammon joint 1 onion, peeled and quartered 1 large carrot, peeled and chopped 2 fresh bay leaves, plus extra to garnish Few black peppercorns 1 tbsp whole cloves 3 tbsp shredless orange marmalade, warmed 2 tbsp runny honey 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 3 tbsp light soft brown sugar Orange wedges, to garnish

1 Place the gammon joint in a large deep pan with the onion, carrot, bay leaves and peppercorns. Pour over enough cold water to cover the joint. 2 Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface using a slotted spoon. Reduce the heat, cover and leave to simmer for 1½ hours, topping up the water level as needed. 3 Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4. Lift out the gammon from the pan and place in a foil-lined roasting tin (discard the cooking liquid). Leave to cool for 10 minutes. Cut away the skin from the gammon, leaving a thin layer of fat and score the fat into diamonds. Stud the scored fat with the cloves in an even pattern. 4 Mix together the marmalade, honey, mustard and sugar and spoon all over the gammon fat. Roast in the oven for 40-45 minutes, basting regularly with the glaze and pan juices until the fat is golden. Serve hot or cold garnished with fresh bay leaves and orange wedges. TIP Add 1 tsp each ground cumin and ground coriander or a splash of Tabasco sauce to the glaze for a bit of extra spice, if liked. Reading the Village Voice is a treat-enjoy Malden Man who has a quirky, interesting take on life, and, Robin’s local history articles are fascinating. Some More Radical Common Sense for Tax or am I just “three stops short of Dagenham?” (Or…Barking on the District Line)

34

The argument over Tax Credits is very sensitive at various levels. Certainly most would agree that its reforms are going to be financially very painful for those at the poorer end of society, but it also impacts on those further up the financial scale and for those with greater responsibilities such as young children. Often it can be the Tax Credit that tips the decision as to whether a partner can afford to go out to work or not - it’s not about being seen as a shirker. It is also sensitive in that it has been used on occasion as an excuse to depress potential wages. Sadly I have come across examples where prospective employees have been offered a lower package on the basis that it would be topped up by the individual applying for their Tax Credit, thus almost encouraging the more unscrupulous employers to take unfair advantage of the system and keep low wages even lower. Then again it is sensitive on another level because of the size of the Tax Credit bill which Mr Osborne tells us is now over £4.5bn per annum. Frankly I have always seen it as a typically complicated tax concept from Gordon Brown, which may have originally been born out of good intentions but was hideously cumbersome in its operation. When introduced it was regarded as a complicated system designed by someone who was no doubt very clever but had obviously no understanding of the bureaucracy involved (Gordon Brown). He thought that it was just a good way of getting around a problem - giving the financial support to those wanting to get back to work. Unfortunately from the start of its operation it was a mess. First you pay tax and then you claim it back as a tax credit - sounds simple but why bother - why not just pay less tax! So what started out as an incentive has grown “like topsy” to now become a financial dependence as difficult to shake off as any drug addiction. Most would now agree that it has to be reformed as it is only going to get worse and so become even more difficult and painful to shake off. Thus we should look for more imaginative ways of adjusting to minimise the pain, whilst still being able to benefit from the gain of its final reform and even potentially its removal. Now in the Autumn Statement

due next week (another Budget in all but name) The Chancellor will no doubt be producing a ‘rabbit out of hat’ solution to this problem, but he will definitely not wish to be seen to be climbing down for reasons of policy, pride and politics. So how about another idea: Why not ask those further up the financial scale to pay a limited sum each for a given period of say five years, which then would then be able to be reclaimed back plus a coupon (dividend) value over the following five years. If we had one million UK taxpayers paying an extra £1,000 each year, that would be £1 billion pounds each year and obviously £5 billion over five years which would then be offset by those payers with their coupon value against their own tax liabilities for the next five years. The effect would be to smooth the painful period of adjustment for those at the weakest point, and allow the government to show that it was taking from those with the broadest shoulders, not the weakest, and looking to lessen the pressure during that time - and then fairly reward the ‘broad shouldered’ for doing so thereafter. Just a thought - radical common sense? I hope so. A Very Sensitive Find Despite the slump in the price of oil, it can be good news if a country with scarce natural resources makes a positive find. So this must be good news for Israel which, for all sorts of political reasons we all know, finds it quite difficult to enjoy a sustainable source of oil from its neighbours. However, on this occasion, the site of this find is in the occupied territories, and not just the West Bank, but in the occupied Syrian territory of the Golan Heights. Apparently the potential size of the find could be enough to make Israel self-sufficient in its oil requirements for the first time since its inception. The nation currently consumes 270,000 barrels per day. This a valuable addition of energy supplies for Israel after the offshore gas fields’ reserves were located in the Tamar and Leviathan fields off Gaza and Israel back in 2009. Gardening Growing Fruit Trees Pippa Greenwood

For the ultimate in gorgeous apples, pears, plums or more, the fruit needs to be freshly picked and sunwarmed - so grow your own and make some good looking additions to your garden, even when space is limited. There’s no need to have a massive plot or an orchard to grow fruit trees… You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, especially if you don’t grow them in a classic tree shape, but train them. Training them into espaliers (several sets of horizontal ‘arms’), cordons (single main stems grown at an angle) or fans (with branches trained into a fan shape) means that you can grow many varieties of apples and pears up against a suitable vertical surface such as a wall, fence or set of sturdy wires. You could also train fruits like apples to make a neat edging for a bed or border about 45cm above ground level (called ‘step-overs’). A step-over apple grows to a height of about 30cm and is trained to forms two horizontal ‘arms’, which will bear a smallish crop of fruit. Try step-overs around the edge of your vegetable plot or flower bed. To make a real feature of fruit, use a tree to create a decorative and productive arch. Buy an inexpensive bare root cordon (straight stem) or a ‘whip’ fruit tree of your favourite variety, pair it with another variety that is a suitable pollinator (check with the nursery) and plant one on each side of the arch, training them in as they grow. It will look pretty when in blossom in spring and will bear tasty fruit too. Provided you get the right rootstock (see below), you can grow fruit trees in large containers. The container needs to be big - a half-barrel at least - and have drainage holes kept clear using a few inches of broken china or ‘crocks’ at its bottom. Good quality loam-based compost such as John Innes No.3 will work well, but help to keep it well aerated and free-draining by adding 25-50% multipurpose loam-free compost. It is essential to choose fruit trees on the right ‘rootstock’, as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. Apples are complicated, but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing M27 - though weak varieties may fail in poor soil or if not well pampered. For bush, cordon, espaliers and half-standard try the dwarfing rootstock M26, while for a cordon, an espalier on poor soil, arches and bush trees try the semi-dwarfing MM106. You can buy one year old ‘maidens’ or ‘whips’ which are small, fairly straight stems and train them yourself or you can buy trained or part-trained trees. Make sure you choose varieties that flower at the same time so that they pollinate each other and thus provide

44

fruit. Ask your supplier which ‘pollination group’ each variety is in. At this time of year you can buy inexpensive fruit trees sold ‘bare-root’, which means lifted from a field and not container grown; they also establish well. Bare-root fruit trees are generally available from about November until early March - so don’t delay, get ordering or planting today! Perfect as a Christmas gift, make vegetable growing fun with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select the vegetables you’d like to grow at www.pippagreenwood.com and your gardenready plants will be delivered in May, accompanied by weekly emails packed full of advice and tips. Gift cards are available too for this perfect present! It is great value and various pack sizes are available.

Safer Neighbourhoods ALERT: Scammers are Changing Tactics to Commit ‘COURIER FRAUD’ The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau’s (NFIB) Proactive Intelligence Team is warning people about a new variation of courier fraud involving Foreign Exchange Bureaus. As with traditional types of courier fraud, the victim receives a phone call and is told that they are speaking to a police officer, and that the police want them to assist in an investigation. The alleged police officer provides them with a phone number and asks them to call back so that the victim can verify their identity, or will direct the victim to contact their bank. The victim will physically put the phone down, but the fraudster will actually stay on the line – keeping it open. When the victim phones back they are still speaking to the fraudster who tells the victim that they are at risk of being defrauded and in order to stop this they need their assistance. Action Fraud has previously warned about a variation of courier where the victim is asked to buy an expensive item such as a watch or a designer coat. Fraudsters are now evolving their tactics by directing victims to visit Foreign Exchange Bureaus and withdraw foreign currency. A convicted courier fraudster, interviewed by City of London Police detectives, said: “The banks are catching on to this now. Whenever an elderly person comes into the bank to withdraw large amounts of cash they get suspicious. What we do now is tell the victims to draw the cash out from a foreign exchange bureau in Euros. They don’t ask them any questions”. The fraudsters will then arrange for the cash to be collected by taxi or courier service. Action Fraud has also received reports where suspects, posing as police officers or bank staff, tell victims to move their money to a ‘safe’ account that has been created in their name to stop ‘further’ funds being stolen. The fraudster also said: “Courier fraud gangs are getting squeezed out of London. What they do now is go to hotels in cities like Manchester and Bristol and stay there for a couple of weeks. They work out of the hotels targeting victims using details from the local telephone and online directories”. Protect Yourself A genuine police officer would never contact you in this way.

46

Banks and the police would never ask someone to aid an investigation by withdrawing or transferring money. If you receive one of these calls, end it immediately. If you have handed over any bank account details to the fraudster, call your bank and cancel your cards immediately. If you want to call your bank, then do it from another telephone. If you don’t have another telephone to use, call someone you know first to make sure the telephone line is free. TIME TO RELAX?

IN IT TO WIN IT

In the lead up to Christmas you might think we are quiet. There is certainly a shift of focus but we anticipate being busy right up to the beginning of the holiday break. Now that so many people do their Christmas shopping online the first of December is often one of, if not the, busiest viewing days of the year. After that viewing levels do calm though the more determined buyers will continue viewing right up to the last minute.

Website hit rates climb very quickly indeed from Boxing Day onwards. As lives become ever busier of course this should come as no surprise. At Jackson Noon we notice the effect every January. None more so than this year, which was particularly strong, and we expect January 2016 to be equally active. However, as they say, you have to be in it to win it!

There will be no slow down in the progressions department which will be working tirelessly to ensure everybody who wants to complete before the end of the year achieves their goal. Our October sales were particularly high so we have plenty to keep us going on that score! THE SHORT STRAW Meantime staff negotiations have started as to who will be in the office over the holidays. We try to make sure every member of our team has a good break to recharge their batteries ready for the New Year. They will need all their energy and enthusiasm soon enough. The burning question is who will draw the short straw and work the least favourite day of the year. We’ll let you guess for a moment which day that might be. The clue is in an interesting graph released by Rightmove this month showing website traffic over the Christmas period. It’s clear that as soon as the yuletide meal has settled people quickly take to the internet, fitting in a little house hunting between family, friends, TV specials and crafty catering with turkey left-overs.

As a consequence our valuations team will be spending the end of the year busily helping canny sellers ensure their home is ready to be seen by the holiday visitors to Rightmove. With a little extra time on their hands we find the number of potential buyers making enquiries shoots up. When we return to work, after boxing day, there will be plenty of answerphone messages and email enquiries to keep us busy, so that the day flies by. The day that drags, and everybody wants to avoid, is New Years Eve. That’s our short straw day. LET IT BE BORING Our lettings team will be working hard to move tenants into new homes in both November and December with a large number of properties becoming available over that period. After that we are hoping for an uneventful Christmas. There is nothing more guaranteed to dampen the season than a bad tempered boiler, mean spirited plumbing or other less than festive breakdown. We will be working, and ready to help, but will be delighted for our tenants if we end up just a little bit bored.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

Heaps of Wildlife

It’s mid-November as I type this, and so far the month has been unseasonably mild. The leaves stayed on the trees for much longer than usual and their colours were spectacular. I enjoyed many walks just round and about the local parks and along The Hogsmill. On one of them I saw daisies in flower on a short patch of grass verge. Daisies in November. The seasons are going haywire! My encouragement of wild plants in my own back garden means that I have an abundance of salad greens for three new residents of my household - guinea pigs rehomed recently from a friend. The common ‘weeds’ so many despise, and which I love, for their immense wildlife value, are now putting forth new growth in this mild weather and providing Dolly, Daisy and Olive with fresh greens twice a day, and all for free. Yarrow, dandelion, groundsel, chickweed, herb robert, herb benedict, clover, dock, cranesbill and plantain to name only a few. Could you indentify these plants in the verges on your street? Throughout a very mild Autumn they have been providing a feast of nectar for any late flying insects.

I hope you all enjoyed Autumnwatch and got inspired to get more involved with helping wildlife. I was most excited by the news of a re-introduction, to sites in Wales, of some pine martens. I long for them to return to Surrey. Once upon a time, long, long ago, when Britain and Ireland were densely wooded, pine martens were very common and widespread. Forest clearance and persecution by humans over millennia have had a devastating effect on their numbers, and, by 1915, there were just a few left in very remote areas, withonly the Scottish Highlands retaining a healthy population. Pine Martens are about the size of a domestic cat and are members of the Mustelid family, along with badgers, otters, stoats, weasels, polecats and mink. They like a well-wooded habitat and nest in tree hollows, having litters of 1 to 5 young in the Spring, after a pregnancy lasting 7 months. The young are fully independent at 6 months old and move off in search of their own territories and to find mates. They are arboreal and extremely mobile, able to travel 20 kilometres in one day. They are mostly active at dusk and during the hours of darkeness: shy, secretive animals who are seldom seen.
