Welcome to Your Worcester Park Life In 1993 a set of unexpected circumstances led me to spent 6 months enjoying an incredible adventure in Southern Africa. I spent a couple of months in South Africa, one in Zimbabwe and three travelling around Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi in a Toyota Hilux towing a two tonne trailer – 20km in 12 weeks! We’d pitch our tent in the bush before the sun went down, I cooked in a 3 legged pot and we’d star gaze with a gin and tonic or two. Happy memories… even the mechanical disasters (of which there were plenty!) I returned a couple of times but have not been back to Africa for over 15 years so am extremely excited about a trip that will take me to Kenya this month. You can read about it on page 18. Remember that Worcester Park Life is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. You may or not know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of Worcester Park, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, the libraries, Manor Drive surgery, St Marys and also Christ Church with St Philip but don’t forget that it is also published online - you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes,

Jenny

Worcester Park History Two doctors, a vet and a music teacher by David Rymill If you go up Central Road this month, you might like to reflect on what you would have seen if you had walked up the hill 90 years ago – a year after the electrification of the railway line that prompted the transformation of the district. On the left, the shops either side of Longfellow Road, and those between Brinkley Road and St Philip’s Avenue, would look familiar, but the right hand side, above Lynwood Drive (then called Stoneleigh Drive), would have appeared almost entirely different. Immediately after Lynwood Drive were three pairs of private houses, and the area between where Stone Place is now, and Windsor Road, was occupied by the buildings of Worcester Park Farm, where one could buy milk at the back door. Between Windsor Road and Balmoral Road, by 1913 there were almost 30 more private houses, mainly semi-detached or detached Edwardian or late Victorian villas. This was part of the development on some of the Stone family’s estate, also including Hampton Road and parallel roads, which I featured in WPL in April 2015. In H G Wells’s description of Worcester Park, fictionalised as ‘Morningside Park’ as the setting for Ann Veronica, after dealing with The Avenue, Park Terrace and Longfellow Road, he commented ‘under the [railway] arch… there was now appearing a sort of fourth estate of little red-and-white roughcast villas, with meretricious gables and very brassy window blinds’, which probably refers to this type of house. I am grateful to Frank and Elizabeth Bennett for telling me about an aerial photograph from the Aerofilms collection, vividly showing how in 1927 these houses were still a small enclave among the fields of Worcester Park Farm. It is available on the ‘Britain from Above’ website at www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/ EPW017487

(now Vivash Brand), so this article looks back at some earlier occupants. This pair seems to have been built after the 1901 census, but appears on the 1907 map for the sale of plots on the Stoneleigh Estate, displayed in Dalmeny House dental surgery. Originally the two houses were known as Trevelga (left) and St Albans (right); they later became 283-285 Cheam Common Road, before the name Central Road was introduced in 1935. By 1911 Trevelga was the home of Harry Good, a 33-year-old butcher, with his wife Lydia and daughter Doris. In both 1926 and 1935 the householder was William Parmiter, a railway clerk. By 1938 it was the Balham Animal Dispensary, and a canine nurse was living there in 1939. In 1911 St Albans was the home of James Fish, a selfemployed music teacher, with his wife Catherine. Mr Fish was still there in 1926, when the local directory listed a ‘music studio’ at the property, so presumably he was giving lessons on the premises. By 1935 it had become the St Albans Maternity Home, and Worcester Park thus acquired a connection with an interesting medical dynasty, the Belilios family. The family is believed to have come from Venice, and by 1837 Raphael Belilios had settled in Calcutta, where the family is commemorated by a Belilios Street. One of his sons, Emmanuel Raphael, became a prominent businessman and philanthropist in Hong Kong: in 1893 he funded the building of new premises for the first government school for girls, which was renamed the Belilios Public School.

As the local population increased in the 1930s, the villas fronting Central Road were generally replaced by shops. However, one pair has survived, until now, as nos. 19-21, almost opposite St Philip’s Avenue. A planning application to demolish them is currently being considered, so it seems topical to investigate Another son, Aaron Raphael, born in Calcutta in their place in Worcester Park’s story. who became doctors: the elder, Dr Raphael Aaron ‘Arthur’ Belilios (pictured above) was a doctor and eye specialist in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and lectured in physiology at the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese from 1908 to 1912. His younger brother, David Aaron, born in Calcutta in 1875, established a medical practice at his home in Queens Road, Wimbledon. It was his son and daughter, Arthur David and Grace, who practised in Central Road, perhaps as a branch of the Queens Road surgery, with a resident midwife, Nurse Frances Fogden.

A D Belilios’s son David describes him as ‘first and foremost a dedicated doctor. He was a houseman at Wimbledon Cottage Hospital at the age of 22. My mother told me that he built up his practice by travelling on a pushbike, ringing a bell and shouting “doctor”.’ In addition to practising from Queens Road, ‘he was also an eye specialist and would see his patients in our house in Belvedere Grove: our sitting room became the waiting room. My father taught first aid to the St John Ambulance at evening class; he was also a factory doctor.’ He also wrote or co-wrote, between 1931 and 1952, An Outline of the Human Body, handbooks of first aid and elementary nursing, and an elementary anatomy and physiology manual for the Red Cross; a sixth edition of his first aid handbook appeared in 1970, seven years after his death. The family had probably ceased to practise in Worcester Park by 1939. Grace Belilios, or Grace Bainbridge as she became in 1940, undertook further training in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1938-9, and is believed to have practised in north London, specialising in psychiatry. Later in life she moved to the Isle of Wight and worked at Parkhurst Prison. Our illustrations this month show the villas before the 1930s changes, looking down the hill, with the corner of St Philip’s Avenue to the right, and (courtesy of his son) Dr A D Belilios. Finally, so far I know of one person who was born in the St Albans Maternity Home –can any WPL readers add to this? There are others who taking their rent well above the market rate. have adopted an interest only and re- Unable to afford the new rents they are now mortgage approach to property investment searching for new rentals and often having to move out of their area to secure a home. who are currently having to reassess. We have had conversations with several Landlords whose rental income only just covers their mortgage. When rates rise they will likely need to contribute to the mortgages from their other earnings and, once the tax relief changes come into effect, will also find themselves paying increased tax. The net result for some will be that their rental income falls short of the related outgoings. We have heard of one landlord whose mortgage and tax bill in 2020 will be almost triple his earnings even if interest rates don’t rise! There is certainly an increase in investors wanting to secure buy-to-let property before the new stamp duty rates come into effect, but there is also a definite swell in the number of previously rented properties being sold. A recent report estimates 19% of landlords are planning to sell all or part of their portfolio in the next 12 months. Within our sales department the effect is not so noticeable, it’s the lettings department that have noticed the real knock on effect.

Many landlords see few actual pounds in their pocket from their rental business and as a consequence need to secure strong rents from their tenants and have little spare to fund improvements. Locally that has resulted in something of a Catch 22 situation. On the one hand rents have risen, on the other tenants have to prove higher earnings in order pass pre-tenancy referencing, and those higher earning tenants tend to aspire to higher quality rental property. The government heralded the tax increase as a way to level the playing field between home owners and investors. Whether that’s right or wrong is another discussion. In the meantime it will create turmoil and insecurity for those that either prefer or need to rent. They are the real people, with real families, who are going to have to put in the effort, pack up their belongings and start again in a new home, possibly in a new area, possibly multiple times, with little warning. This at a time when a million more rental homes are estimated to be required over the coming 5 years. That seems just little bit unfair.

Ruth Jemmett Writes Ruth Jemmett Explores A Month Of Change We have had a strange few months weatherwise. Just when we think a pattern is emerging Mother Nature throws something unusual at us. This year Spring flowers have bloomed early, only to be blasted by the last bite of winter. Yesterday I was cheered to see a long-tailed tit hanging off a bird feeder here in my garden in Salisbury Road. Hopefully his visit - a sure sign of Spring - means that he and his chums think that warmer weather must lurking somewhere. My greenhouse heater is still regularly turning itself on when the tempersature drops below eight degrees. Hopefully it will be off duty soon. March is a busy month for special days. Things kick off with St David’s Day. Little is known about St David, the patron saint of Wales. He is thought to have been the son of a prince or chieftain. He apparently founded several monasteries during his lifetime. It is said that he performed many miracles , and would preach with a snow white dove on his shoulder. ( I hope his mother used a good washing powder - you know what birds are like!) Daffodils are traditionally worn on St David’s Day, as a reminder that Spring is arriving. Leeks can also be worn, as they are one of the few vegetables that are around in March. Mothering Sunday always falls between 1st March and 1st April, depending on the date of Easter Day. In olden times young people working away from home would return to visit their mothers at this time of year, proffering them a Simnel cake. Try not to forget to at least buy a card for your own mother on her special day, whether or not you lob a cake in her direction! On 17th March it will be St Patrick’s Day, which is a Bank Holiday in Ireland. Many years ago, at that time, children would wear rosettes with crosses on them. As time passed the wearing of some shamrock - a plant that only grows in Ireland - became more fashionable. Americans, who have assimilated a lot of Irish immigrants over the years, love to celebrate this saint’s day. From 1766 onwards the cities of New York, Boston and Chicago can grind to a halt as crowds throng the streets, as they enjoy their parades.

On 20th March it will be the Vernal Equinox, when Spring officially begins. (The term Vernal Equinox means that days and nights at that time are of equal length). On 24th March it will be Maundy Thursday, when Her Majesty The Queen will observe the old tradition of giving specially minted Maundy Money to selected elderly people. In former days they would have been the needy of the parish. Nowadays the coins are highly valued amongst collectors! On 25th of March Good Friday is observed. When I was a schoolgirl I used to attend a religious service at that time of the year, called The Stations of The Cross at the old St. Joseph’s Church in Epsom. The ceremony consisted of the congregation following a priest around the church, pausing at various paintings that charted Christ’s journey to Mount Calvary. I recently attended a naming service of a baby in a Baptist church, and rather liked the idea of children being able to decide for themselves if they want to be part of a religion when they reached a certain maturity. Regular readers will know that I was indoctrinated as a Cathiloc from an early age. When I look around the world now, and see the discord caused by various religions,I am

beginning to think that the Baptists might have the right idea! On the 27th March it will be Easter Sunday. The word Easter is derived from Eostre, the Goddess of Fertility and Spring, because of its connection with eggs and new life. Easter is a moveable feast, which is occurs between late March and late April. In some years when Easter is early lawns are still too soggy to mow, much to the relief of people like my husband, who is not a great fan of gardening! In Christian societies Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus three days after his crucifixion. This is the time to rejoice in the sight of daffodils. Most of us are familiar with Wordsworth’s famous poem about the flower, but probably not so familiar with the fact that his sister Dorothy had penned a very similar poem just before he was ‘inspired’ to write it! Now that the weather has become more clement, building works are moving on apace here in Salisbury Road. Our once typical 1930s estate is being altered beyond recognition, and we ‘oldies’ still mourn for the time when we arrived here all those years ago. It was a time when lush trees kept our cosy dwellings secluded and cosy, and our privacy was treasured. Our whole area seems to changing into a place we don’t

14

recognise, where we are overlooked from every angle, as trees are lopped at every opportunity, and some of our dear little bungalows grow into houses. I recently wandered along to the new Aldi shop on the Kingston Road, and realised that the changes aren’t just limited to our road. I was appalled to see so many shops empty. The parade, which, fifty years ago boasted establishments that catered for all your needs, is now looking unloved. When I was a girl we had a dairy, a butcher, a Post Office, 2 hardware stores a fish and chip shop, a dress shop, a hairdresser’s, a coal merchant, 2 greengrocers, a bank, a Co-op, a general grocery store, two sweet shops, a haberdasher’s shop, a bicycle shop, and a Chemist! And they are just the ones I remember! In those days shopkeepers weren’t charged exorbitant rents, and many of us didn’t have to bother to go to local towns such as Epsom or Kingston, as most of our shopping needs were met. As I walked towards Aldi’s, and tried not to trip on the badly maintained paving along the parade I felt I was saying goodbye to a dear friend I used to know. Crazy traffic schemes, and yellow lines on roads have meant that even if people WANT to shop locally, there are very limited parking spaces. End of moaning!

The American poet Ogden Nash said: “Indoors or out, no-one relaxes in March, That month of wind and taxes, The wind will presently disappear, The taxes last us all the year!” How true! Finance Dividend taxation and other changes to tax laws in 2016/17

A change to the dividend taxation laws is to be implemented from April 2016. Pension and ISA dividends will not be affected by the new regime and will remain free of tax, but the new dividend rules are likely to have an adverse effect on directors and shareholders of small incorporated companies. The new proposals will reportedly bring in an extra £2.54 billion in revenue for the 2016/17 tax year,¹ with smaller amounts continuing to bolster the public purse in future years. The changes are an effort by the government to equalise tax laws for those who run unincorporated businesses. Here’s a summary of the changes to be introduced • A maximum annual Dividend Allowance of £5,000 is to come into force (after taking the personal allowance into account) • The existing 10% notional Dividend Tax Credit will be scrapped • Dividends over the £5,000 annual limit will be taxed at the following rates: - 7.5% on dividend income in the basic rate band - 32.5% (for the higher rate band) - 38.1% (in the additional rate band) People with a low dividend income will see a reduction in their tax bill, but the new measures are likely to hit familyrun small businesses the hardest. So why has the Treasury decided to overhaul the current system? The government is attempting to discourage taxmotivated incorporation, which means setting up a business as a limited company simply to enjoy a lower rate of tax on income. In the past, directors/shareholders of a limited company have been able to take a small salary from their business, which attracted enough tax to maintain their entitlement to the state pension. The government’s objection, however, is that company profits are then used to extract a further dividend taxed at the much lower rate of 10%. Strong objections from the business community With the inherent difficulties facing small businesses, fears have been expressed that the government is making it much harder for people in business to survive financially. This includes both individual contractors who have incorporated their businesses, and family-run companies.

their business, and that their overall contribution to the economy needs to be more widely acknowledged by the government. Are there any other changes to UK taxation in the forthcoming financial year? Other announcements made in last year’s Budget include: • Pension tax relief changes Restrictions on pension tax relief for those with an income of £150,000 or more will come into force from April 2016. A fixed rate of 33% will apply for all in the new tax year, regardless of the rate band. • Savings interest Said to be an acknowledgement of recent poor returns for savers, George Osborne also announced in last year’s budget that savings interest of up to £1,000 will no longer be taxed. • Digital tax accounts The ‘account’ will be similar to online banking in that details on how much is owed will be available to view at any time, and taxpayers will be able to make payments throughout the financial year rather than meeting a specific deadline. These are all significant changes to taxation laws in the UK, and are set to bring in considerable sums for the Treasury, but the new dividend tax rules seem to be attracting the most concern and criticism. ¹www.itcontracting.com/new-dividend-tax-april-2016/

In fact, an online petition has been started, objecting to these new rules. Company directors/shareholders say that the rewards of low dividend taxation compensated for the long hours and risks they took when starting

Charity The Lunchbowl Network by Jenny Stuart

On March 10th, I’m going to Nairobi, Kenya with Heidi Gomes, Mandy Cormack and Heather Churchouse to visit a charity which we’ve been supporting pretty much since it was founded ten years ago. Heidi was one of the original trustees so has been fundraising since the very beginning.

children for a different life. Nobody takes a salary in Lunchbowl and the trip is entirely self-funded by those of us going, so you can rest assured that every donation goes directly to where it’s intended.

Lunchbowl operates in the Kibera Slum with a feeding programme for 500 children, and now also two kindergartens. We have, over the years, raised tens of thousands of pounds – you may remember some of our recent events…? Quizmas last year (over £13K), Wild Woods in Wimbledon Common Oct 14 (over £2K), funday sunday July 13 (£6,560), Mardi Gras in Beverley park (£3,150)....

There are some play items that we’d love to take out – so if you have any Popoids (if you have them you’d probably know!) and wooden construction blocks looking for a very good home please email me jenny@maldenmedia.co.uk and I could pick them up. Or if you’d like to make a donation you could send me a cheque (address on page 4) made payable to The Lunchbowl Network, and I’ll let you know how any donations are spent. Thank you so so much on behalf of all the Lunchbowl children.

The Life List Infamous Last Words We all know someone who has to have the last word in a conversation, but what about when it’s the last conversation ever? Unfortunately, that final utterance will live on after you, so you want to go out on an epic line. Lord Palmerston (1784 - 1865), perhaps unintentionally, went for comedy with: “Die, my dear Doctor, that’s the last thing I shall do!” King Charles II (1630 - 1685) apparently uttered: “Let not poor Nelly starve”, which is surely a godsend for any elephant charities in need of a quote. While you’re pondering your final declaration, here are some to avoid:

• I’ve not achieved much but I’ve certainly watched some great television. • I’m not wasting good money on a Sunday evening call-out for an electrician. • Listen, I’ll go to the doctor’s when I’m good and ready. • Maybe it’s the homemade Viagra; I got the recipe off the Internet. • You know what? I think the milk might be off. • Okay, a fiver says I can make that jump. • Can anyone else smell gas? • Watch this - apparently if you tickle a crocodile under the chin it puts them into a trance. • Human catapult world record, here I come! • My late uncle always said you could eat any type of mushroom once. • I don’t believe in spontaneous human combustion. • Oh, stop being dramatic; how big can a spider be? I’ll fetch it out of the cellar myself. What do you mean ‘I’ll need a shovel’? By Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk

View from the City by Justin Urquhart Stewart Fear of Falling - Fear of Losing Volatile and bungee jumping stock markets along with morose newsreaders, can all put the fear of financial failure into our heads. Recent weeks have been a perfect case in point. Stockmarkets around the world have been see-sawing around with little sensible rhyme or reason. In fact, the excuses given have varied as the newspapers leap from one apparent excuse to another. So was it the rate rise in the US? Well the anticipated plan for further rises seem to been curtailed, so probably not. Or maybe the possible hard landing for the Chinese economy? Well it is still growing at a rather respectable rate, so probably not. Well, if not, then it must have been the plummeting oil price, but that is in fact better for most of the world, not worse. Or then was it the possibility of an impending global recession? Well with employment at record levels in the UK and falling unemployment elsewhere in the developing nations, this hardly looks like the precursor for a recession. The reasons or excuses seem to be legion, and the fact is that there is no one single reason, but rather that the key word in any economy has in fact been effected - and that is confidence. However, the vital issue though for all of us is what should we be all doing? Well for me there are two clear issues that should guide us especially in such moments of fear and fervor. Firstly compounding. It is all too easy to be scared, quite understandably by the headlines and the low tones of the newsreaders - Hugh Edwards doesn’t really mean it, but if the markets drop dramatically he obviously has to sound suitably serious. However, the effect is serious for many as their confidence is seeped away. Let me then counter this with an investment rule that is far more powerful than see-sawing stockmarkets. If your dear granny had left you £100, 69 years ago, and invested it in the UK market you would have now something in the region of £9,000. Not bad but hardly exciting. However, if she had done the same but this time invested all those tiny little dividends over those 69 years, the result would be very different – with just over £180,000. A sum far greater than any day to day market gyrations.

22

manage to miss the best performing days in the market. I have some data from the US S&P500 index covering a 20 year period from 1996 to the end of 2015 - 5,036 trading days if you wish to count them. During that time, had you stayed invested you would have had an annualised return of 8.19% which is quite healthy return. However, had you manage to miss the best 40 days out of the 5,036 days you would have actually lost money? In fact you would bear down 1.96% - which after twenty years would at the very least be very depressing. So the truth is we cannot afford to be out of the market, and that unless you think like the often quoted Private Frazer from Dad’s Army that we are all doomed, that we should not be panicked into selling out. The old take away line we always had in the investment world (in the City) was that it is “Time in the market - not timing the market”. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Golden Years Memories of 50 years ago

British, and born in the 1950s or earlier? Congratulations! You’re a genius at mental arithmetic! There are no studies, surveys or statistics to prove this, but it stands to reason: you needed a brain from IBM just to work out your change! Here’s a simple test for anyone under 50. On Friday you go out with £1.17.4. You buy a pint of mild for Alf at 1s 2d, a bottle of sweet stout for Alf’s missus Mabel (no white wine for the ladies in those days!) at 10 and 1/2d, a pint of bitter for yourself at 1s 5d, a packet of crisps at 3d, and a dark rum for old Harry at 1s 8d. Later, it’s your round again – same again but no crisps, and Harry has a double (which he never does when it’s his round!). Later still the fish man comes and you have a poke of shrimps, 4d; then you give the lass from the Sally Army 2d for a War Cry which you never actually read. At chucking out time you buy a bottle of Guinness to take home, 1s 9d (1d back on the bottle). So: have you got enough left over to see Rovers at home tomorrow and buy a pie and a Bovril at the ground? And that’s why we had decimalisation. People think, wrongly, that Britain got decimalised on April 15th 1971, or D-Day as the press dubbed it. The real D-Day was March 1st 1966 when the Chancellor, Jim Callaghan, officially announced that the Government had accepted the report of a committee of enquiry (now more than two years old) and that a currency that was, in essence, more than 1,200 years old would be scrapped in five years’ time. The announcement marked the end of a long, slow march towards decimalisation. When the Decimal Association was founded in 1841 many people saw it as another manifestation of that extreme rationalism that demanded a 13-month year and one universal language. But it at least succeeded in getting a new coin minted from 1849 onwards: the florin, worth two shillings – or 10 to the pound! The florin, though, failed to our perception of the pound and shilling as the base units of currency. We were used to working with bases 12 and 20, and that’s why Britain was so good at arithmetic. (The above example is simple subtraction: imagine you were a wages clerk making up weekly pay-packets for 100-odd workers all of whom worked different hours at different rates!)

24

Another reason why the old money had to go was that it was so damned BIG! Have you ever seen it? You needed a gusset sewn into your change pocket or all those farthings, halfpennies, cartwheel pennies, 12-sided threepenny bits, tanners, bobs, florins and half-crowns would wear a hole in it in days. Still, there was a lot of resistance; and only when South Africa and Australia took the lead did Harold McMillan authorise the committee of enquiry in 1961. Once Mr Callaghan had made the formal announcement, though, things moved fast. The Decimal Coinage Act and the Decimal Currency Board came in 1969 along with the 50p piece. The new 5p and 10p came in 1970 and were the same size as the shilling and florin they eventually replaced. The only real change on D-Day itself was the introduction of the new 1/2p, 1p and 2p, although even then the old coppers remained in circulation until August. Was it worth it? A lot of old folk got fooled into thinking that 6p was the same as 6d when of course it was closer to 1s 2 and 1/2d; but my 23-year-old daughter is astonished and appalled that we put up with a system that mixed not only base 12 and base 20 but also fractions of the basic unit for so long. Still, we were brilliant at mental arithmetic! Happy 50th birthdays to Alan Davies (6th), Nigel Clough (19th), and Michael Imperioli (26th). Cake and botox to you all!

In just a few months’ time, in summer 2016, the hospital will open its doors to: • Four brand new state of the art Operating Theatres replacing the existing 3 theatres. • A brand new High Dependency Unit which will allow The New Victoria Hospital to admit cases of greater acuity. • A 14 bed Day Surgery Unit, in addition to the existing 27 beds. • A new enlarged Pathology Laboratory with state of the art Analyser. • A new Pharmacy - Following on from this, later in 2017, the hospital we will have completed the second phase of the development, which will provide: • A new Outpatient Department with new waiting room

and reception area • 5 additional Consulting Rooms with ancillary services, bringing the total number of Consulting Rooms to 12 • A new enlarged Imaging Department to accommodate an expanding range of services and equipment. Graham Ball, The New Victoria Hospital’s Chief Executive commented: “Of course the most important attribute of our hospital has always been the expertise of our staff and the caring ambience that pervades throughout. When the redevelopment is complete we will be as proud of the physical environment as we are of our patient care. The development will help us grow further and provide more state-of-the-art facilities for our patients and Consultants.” The private, charity owned hospital is one of the few remaining independent hospitals in the country and has provided an excellent level of service to the local community for almost sixty years. Today it is frequently ranked by patients as one of the top private hospitals in London. The hospital’s main specialties include orthopaedic surgery, gynaecology, general surgery and gastroenterology.

Hobbies Enjoy hands-on history with the Detectorists By Kate McLelland

Last year the BBC TV series “Detectorists” (starring MacKenzie Crook and Toby Jones) not only won a BAFTA, but attracted thousands of fans. The series seems to have sparked a fresh interest in metal detecting, despite the fact that its main characters seldom find anything more valuable than the odd bottle top or metal button. Some detectorists, however, seem to have the magic touch. 1n 2012, 86-year-old Cliff Massey dug up a stash of old coins in a field in Wrexham, North Wales and last summer he returned to the same field to discover a 15th century gold ring together with a 500 year old hoard of gold and silver coins. If your appetite has been whetted by the many similar stories that have appeared in the media in recent years, here’s some advice to help you get started as a detectorist: What you need How much time will you spend on your new hobby? If it’s just the odd weekend you may not want to invest too much in your detector. A starter model can be purchased from around £140 but a top of the range detector can cost upwards of £1,000. A reputable dealer can offer expert knowledge on the range and depth of the device’s detecting capabilities, battery life, weight and ease of handling. But be warned: the more expensive detectors are often quite complex to use, so unless you are comfortable using new technology, your new gadget may end up unused in the cupboard under the stairs. As well as a detector, your basic kit should include good quality digging tools such as a strong trowel or spade, waterproof clothing, sturdy boots or Wellingtons, gloves, a water bottle, First Aid equipment, a notepad and pencil, insect repellent and a Finds Bag, to protect those freshly-dug artefacts.

Where to search Try gardens, riverbanks, beaches and common land (subject to by-laws) but get permission from the landowner first if you want to dig on private land. Establish a finds sharing agreement (signed by both parties) before you dig to avoid disagreements in the event of a valuable discovery. Scheduled sites are protected areas of special historic interest (you will find lists in local museums or by going to Historic England site www.historicengland. org.uk) and you will need local authority permission to dig in those areas. Dealing with finds If you are fortunate enough to find something of value, you will be expected to share any money received from a sale 50%-50% with the owner of the land. The website www.finds.org.uk gives a full definition of the rules surrounding ‘Treasure Trove’. All items classed as treasure must be handed over to the state: a committee then decides on the size of the reward to be given to the finder and landowner. The idea of discovering hidden treasure may be exciting, but metal detecting isn’t just about the money. It’s a popular hobby that is open to all age groups and can be particularly beneficial to older participants as it keeps you physically and mentally fit. Metal detecting is also a pastime that offers an unrivalled, hands-on approach to history that will expand your knowledge and appreciation of this country’s rich heritage.

For your own safety, be sure to tell somebody where you are going on every outing and take along a fully charged mobile phone. To advertise email jenny@maldenmedia.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

Recipe Chicken in red wine This is a quick, easy and flavoursome way to serve chicken. Use a full-bodied red wine such as a Burgundy for the best flavour, although there is no need to buy a really pricy one! Serves 4, Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes 2 tbsp olive oil 600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks 225g button mushrooms 200g shallots, peeled 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 300ml red wine 200ml chicken or vegetable stock 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree 1 bay leaf 2tbsp cornflour Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve

1 Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon. 2 Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf. 3 Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender. 4 Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs. Tip This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer-proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot.

Nonsuch Park is a link to Tudor England. The Palace that once stood here was a hugely expensive symbol of Henry VIII’s power. The Friends of Nonsuch offer guidance to a 7 feet model which has been created from contemporary documentation, paintings and an excavation of the Palace site in 1959. The model is on display in the Stable Wing of the much later Nonsuch Mansion in the heart of Nonsuch Park. Cake and Bake Iced Orange Bundt Cake This delicious citrus flavoured sponge is made in a classic ring-shaped bundt tin. You’ll find them in most good cook shops and larger supermarkets, or you can use an ordinary 1.5L capacity ring mould tin instead.

Ingredients: • 200g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 300g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting • 200g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 1/2 tsp baking powder • Finely grated zest of 1 large orange • 100ml fresh orange juice • 100-150ml milk

FOR THE ICING • 100g icing sugar • Approx 2 tbsp fresh orange juice

Serves 10 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus cooling and setting times

1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Thoroughly

grease a 22-23cm Bundt tin (measured across the top) with butter then lightly dust with flour, tipping out the excess.

2. Put the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat

together until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then sift over the flour and baking powder and fold in along with the orange zest and juice. Fold in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency.

3. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin and

gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the cake is risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes then carefully turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

4. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl then beat

in the orange juice to make a smooth and thick icing. Drizzle the icing over the top of the cake, letting it drizzle down the sides. Leave in a cool place until set.

TIP

Make sure to grease and flour the bundt tin thoroughly or you may find it tricky to turn the cake out. Use the tip of a small palette knife or silicon spatula to gently loosen the edges of the cake first.

Gardening Vertical Cover With Climbers Pippa Greenwood

If the boundaries of your garden are uninteresting or drab, then it is time to think about some vertical gardening. Upright surfaces are itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs, and if you have several vertical sites then so much the better. A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants. Start by looking at the surface you have, the size, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive. Soil type is important as the plant you choose must be suited to the site. Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and improve as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole. Most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, then consider erecting some sort of support system on which to grow your climbers. Break up the monotony of a long stretch of wall with a range of different plants, and make a tall, narrow building seem broader by only allowing them to reach the height of the first floor. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or self-clinging plants such as ivies are ideal, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting. Climbers are best planted in open ground as they tend to have sizeable root systems. If grown in containers you must re-pot regularly and ultimately plan to use a big container such as a half barrel. Use a loam-based potting compost and add extra grit for drainage, and place a deep layer of crocks at the base of the container. Add controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, to ensure that plants get adequately fed for the first few months. A triangular or V-shaped trellis panel at the back will give initial support for the plant to climb up before moving on to your wall or fence. Tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about. For ground planting, dig a large hole at least 18 inches (45 cm) from the wall or fence and incorporate plenty of compost or well rotted manure. Soak the plant’s root ball and place in the hole, ideally at a 45 degree angle so that it leans towards the wall, then spread out the roots and plant. If your climber came already attached to bamboo canes, untie the stems from any central stake and train

46

the best looking shoots towards your new support system, using the bamboo canes to help it on its way. Keep climbers well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall. Any good garden centre will have a range of plants, but here are some suggestions: Vigorous climbers for a quick effect: Actinidia chinensis Akebia quinata Clematis montana Clematis montana ‘Rubens’ Vitis coignetiae Climbers for clay soils: Campsis Celastrus scandens Clematis Ivies Golden hop Climbing hydrangea Honeysuckles (most) Vitis coignetiae Climbers for an alkaline or chalky soil: Actinidia kolomikta Akebia quinata Clematis Ivies Climbing hydrangea Jasminum officinale Honeysuckles Trachelospermum jasminoides Wisteria Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - fantastic UK grown vegetable plants of your choice plus weekly advice and tips emails from Pippa, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

Life in the fast lane a wake-up call for older drivers? By Kate McLelland 81-year-old retired florist Martha Harwood from Lancashire was driving home at night after visiting a friend, when she found that a oncefamiliar road layout had changed. Momentarily confused, she took a turning she believed would get her back onto the M65 motorway. Unfortunately she failed to notice the huge ‘No Entry’ sign and drove onto an exit slip road. Seconds later Martha found herself driving in the fast lane, going the wrong way down the motorway. She continued for over fifteen miles, forcing a number of terrified drivers to swerve out of her way until police officers pulled her over. Thankfully no one was killed in the incident but accidents caused by elderly car users frequently result in injury and death, and the number is set to rise in future: by the year 2035 the number of older drivers on our roads will have increased to 21 million. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is against setting a maximum age for driving, but does suggest that older drivers undergo formal medical checks at each 3-yearly licence renewal after the age of 70. In November last year the General Medical Council (GMC) published a public consultation proposing changes to the rules surrounding GP/patient confidentiality. One proposal was that GPs should inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) if a patient continues to use a car after having been diagnosed as medically unfit to drive, with the consequence that they will almost certainly lose their licence. However, short of following patients out of the surgery to see if they drive away, doctors have no way of telling if a patient is still using their car

50

and families and communities should continue to remain vigilant. The AA offers some simple tips to reduce risk: • Older people are more easily fatigued so they should avoid long journeys, especially if they are driving after meals or drinking alcohol. • Encourage them to talk to their GP to see if their medical conditions are likely to affect their driving, either now or in future. • Make sure they have regular eye tests. • Get them to agree to a list of restrictions that might preclude them from driving in the dark, on busy roads or in bad weather. • Older people are sometimes reluctant to take advice from family members: enlist the help of a mutual friend who shares your concerns. • Make sure they are driving the right car. One with larger windows, bigger mirrors and higher seats might improve all-round vision. If you have tried everything and still believe that your elderly friend or relative is driving unsafely, it may be time to sit them down for a serious conversation. If they are heavily dependent on using a car, they may need to consider other lifestyle changes, such as moving to a different area. Alternatively, offering regular lifts or providing information about public transport may soften the blow. While it’s hard to tell a person who loves driving that it’s time to stop, it may help to remember that in the event of an accident a frail, older body is more likely to suffer serious injuries. This decision is therefore as much for their own good as it is for those unfortunate, innocent road users who may become their victims.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams For the love of Badgers

My first encounter with a badger was in the pages of The Wind in the Willows. This was well before I realised there were people in the world who could wish badgers harm, and before I understood that the countryside could dwindle and wildlife could be driven from their homes, and even towards extinction. My second encounter was with some real life badgers, when I belonged to a local bird watching group in the early 1980s. One evening we were privileged to be invited to the home of one of our members, to wait quietly in her kitchen for a family of badgers to visit her garden and eat the peanut butter sandwiches she had put out for them on her patio. It was such a very special and never to be forgotten moment. Now I live in some dark times, with badgers being killed by our own government in some misguided attempt to control bovine TB in dairy herds. A target of 5,000 to be shot or trapped was set for 2013 in Somerset and Gloucestershire. Recently I learned that this unspeakable policy was being extended to the County of Dorset.

The Badger Trust exists to promote the conservation and welfare of badgers and the protection of their setts and habitat ‘for public benefit’. They represent and support around 60 voluntary badger groups, providing expert advice on all badger issues and they work closely with the Government, police and other conservation and welfare organisations. I am afraid I am somewhat cycnical about the ‘closeness’ of their relationship to this present government. Their advice is clearly going unheeded.

Looking on Wiki, I see that humans have a long history of persecuting these wonderful animals, who are in the same family as otters and pine martens, weasels and stoats -the Mustellidae.

Culling badgers is prohibited in many European countries because badgers are listed in the Berne Convention, but many were gassed in Europe in the 1960s and 70s to control rabies.

Badger baiting was once a common ‘sport’. It consisted of capturing badgers and putting them into crates, and laying bets on dogs who attempted to bait the badger out of its refuge so the poor animal could be attacked. Badgers are normally docile animals but will become fierce when cornered. This, apparently, is reason enough to create a ‘sport’.

Until the 1980s, culls of badgers in England and Wales were carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, by gassing.

Badger baiting was outlawed in the 19th Century by naturalists and moral reformers, resulting in the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1835. Even so, as late as 2015, five men faced trial in the UK in connection with badger baiting.

56

I read that badgers have been trapped commercially for their pelts for centuries, mainly to make shaving brushes. Apparently badger hair is ideal because of its water retention properties.

A further 10 year trial of gassing them was begun in 1995. And now we have shooting, which may or may not be, more ‘humane’. There is a huge body of evidence that killing badgers does nothing to control bovine TB, but our government does not seem to want to hear this or to use vaccination instead. Seemingly it enjoys killing badgers, as do many landowners who simply don’t want badgers on their land.

Reading all the sorry history of our relationship with one of our most iconic wildlife species is immensely depressing. Killing these lovely animals to ‘benefit’ an industry which exploits large numbers of cows, kills all the male calves and deprives the heifers of the mother/infant bonding ( so the milk can be sold for humans), all for a product that nobody needs and which probably is responsible in large part for breast and ovarian cancer, is shocking. Even if the product was essential and not implicated in some diseases, killing wildlife instead of improving the insanitary, overcrowded conditions that spread infection in herds, would still be shocking. No doubt it is cheaper to blame and massacre badgers than to spend more on good husbandry to ensure healthy cows. Everybody would be rightly outraged if it were suggested that all pet cats and any other animal who wanders through dairy pasture ( quite likely carrying any infection with them to neighbouring herds) should be shot to contain the disease, but nobody would suggest this, because it is only

badgers the government wishes to ‘control’ - most likely because they eat pheasant chicks and eggs, spoiling the ‘sport’ of shooting the birds out of the sky at a later date. Persecuting wild creatures and blaming them for something that is our own fault, and refusing to share our space with them, as if they have no right to exist on this earth with us, seems to be a huge human failing. From the birds and foxes who visit our gardens to the woodland creatures we seldom see, I hotly dispute our entitlement to push them off their living space and deprive them of food and freedom to roam. I urge all friends of badgers to protest the cull in any way possible. One easy action is to cease buying dairy products - a boycott. In the Free From section of any supermarket you will find a great variety of ‘milks’ made from nuts, beans and seeds. Dairy free cheeses, yogurts and ice cream are also available. For the love of badgers, please go dairy free - and perhaps also join The Badger Trust - PO Box 708, East Grinstead, RH19 2WN. 08458 287878, email enquiries@badgertrust.org.uk Anybody who is interested in helping to protect the environment for all of us should seriously consider going vegan. The arguments for this are quite compelling - you could watch the film Cowspiracy on Netflix for a detailed exploration of the issues. If you use Facebook and Twitter, you will have no trouble finding out anything you wish to know about living vegan, along with masses of wonderful cruelty free recipes. May we one day have a world where all wild creatures are safe from human persecution, violence and greed.
