Welcome to Your Worcester Park Life Much as I love the summer and the heat that we’ve enjoyed in recent months, I also look forward to autumnal sunshine and the fabulous colours that come with it and just love this month’s front cover. It’s rain and drizzle I don’t want, particularly when it’s unexpected. Now I am completely redundant from the school run with daughter no2 off to secondary I decided I needed something to fill that gap. So the big question - give in to the relentless puppy pestering. Or. Something else. Hmmmm…. Well I am now getting on my bike (literally!) after they leave for school in the morning and peddling to the gym where I am attempting to push myself and get fitter and hopefully shift some lbs. Almost three weeks in and I am really enjoying the new routine. Maybe not so much though in the pouring rain though, So here’s to a good proportion of beautiful sunny autumnal and winter mornings please. Fingers crossed. Remember that Worcester Park Life is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. We’ve been successfully going for over 100 editions now so must be doing something right! Thanks so much to everyone who has advertised and contributed and to you for reading and supporting our advertisers. You may or not know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of Worcester Park, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, the libraries, Manor Drive surgery, St Marys and also Christ Church with St Philip but don’t forget that it is also published online you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes,

Jenny

Worcester Park History An inn and an author by David Rymill This week we look at a pub in Cheam Common Road with a history going back at least 175 years, which was renamed in 2010 after an author with a local link who was born 150 years ago this year. On the corner of Cheam Common Road and Shrubland Grove stands the pub which was known for many years as the Drill Inn; the present building is at least the second to have borne that name, presumably chosen because of the agricultural character of the area at the time, as were The Harrow and The Plough in Cheam. This part of Cheam Common Road was for about a century associated with the Pennington family. There was a Drill Inn on the site by 1841, when it was owned by Francis Pennington, who also had a small farm including a barn and stables in the area occupied by Shrubland Grove and extending to the access road that is now Woodbine Lane. His property included several cottages of which two survive (nos. 119-121), bearing the date 1828 and the name Poplar Place, which by the 1890s applied to eight cottages facing the main road and four facing the access road. Francis Pennington’s farm also included land to the south-west, which he rented, in the area now bordered by Dalmeny Road, Oaks Avenue, Killester Gardens and the London Road, and including the southern half of Kingsmead Avenue. He also occupied a long narrow field now represented by the north-west side of Brinkley Road and the lower part of Browning Avenue. Ten years later, possibly after the death of Francis Pennington, his children Harriet and Francis appear to have been running the inn and farm respectively. In 1861 William Jesse Baker was apparently operating the Drill Inn as well as running a brick and tile works on the land now occupied by Lingfield Road (by 1894 the works had moved

6

a short distance, to what is now Huntingdon Gardens). Meanwhile Francis was running the Jolly Farmer beerhouse nearby; this may possibly have been in one of the cottages in the Poplar Place area, although I have not so far found the exact location, but by 1871 he had taken over the Drill, which remained in the hands of the Penningtons until at least 1901. By 1906 the Drill’s premises included a bar, tap room, shop, public room and large stable. In that year plans were drawn up by Yetts, Sturdy and Usher on behalf of Hodgson’s Kingston Brewery Company for minor alterations, apparently involving the division of the bar into small public and private bars. The present building, constructed in a neoGeorgian style with handmade bricks, dates from around 1938. I’d be pleased to receive WPL readers’ memories of the pub over the years. Our illustrations this month are a photograph of the Drill as it was before the 1930s rebuilding, courtesy of Kay Foale, and a section of the 1867-8 Ordnance Survey map of this part of Cheam Common Road. In the 1980s the picture on the inn sign was changed from a drill of an agricultural kind to the military sort. It was renamed the Old Crown

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

in the 1990s, and became The Old Drill in 2000. After reverting briefly to its original name, it was relaunched in 2010 as the H G Wells, after the author who lived in The Avenue for a year. 2016 is the 150th anniversary of H G Wells’s birth, and to mark the anniversary I have been asked to lead a short tour of part of Worcester Park ‘as H G Wells knew it’. All are welcome to join for a suggested £1 donation to Diabetes UK, a charity

which H G Wells co-founded. We’ll meet at Worcester Park Station, outside the main entrance in Station Approach, at 11 am on Saturday 8th October, and walk in the footsteps of Ann Veronica in the 1909 novel of the same name. The book reflected the changing political landscape of the day; at the time, some found it shocking, partly because of Ann Veronica’s Suffragette sentiments, and it was banned from some libraries. I don’t make any claim to be an expert on H G Wells, but I hope to tell some of the story behind Wells’s description of Worcester Park, thinly disguised as Morningside Park in this novel, as ‘a suburb that had not altogether come off’, and mention some of the varied people who were his neighbours. The walk will probably take a little over an hour, and will be on mostly level pavements, mainly in and around The Avenue. A set of 12 books by H G Wells has recently been donated to Worcester Park Library, sponsored by local traders, and the books are now available for loan, with more to follow. At the library you can also collect entry forms for a children’s art competition (8+), for artwork inspired by Wells’s books, and a colouring competition for 3s-7s, using an outline of the Time Machine, with three £10 book tokens to be won in each competition (closing date 28th October). This 300page book tells the story of Worcester Park from the Iron Age to the present day, and includes memories of local life from 1908 onwards, and over 150 maps, photographs and drawings - mostly never published before.

Ruth Jemmett Writes October - time of the mellower season Ruth Jemmett Leads Us Through A Time of Falling Leaves And Ripe Apples The poet Samuel Butler described this time of year well, saying that “Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits”. When I was a girl I would often frequent Tolworth Court Farm in Autumn, as their orchard was full of wonderful ripe fruits. The farmer was happy for children to take apples and pears once they had fallen to the ground, and I fondly remember scooping up fruit, whilst trying to avoid the chickens that were scurrying around my feet, and the eggs they had laid! Although the trees in Autumn can look stunning, their falling leaves can create problems. Salisbury Road

is fortunate in having a variety of beautiful trees on its verges. Unfortunately the one outside our property has foliage with seeds that the Ring-Necked Parakeets love. At this time of the year literally dozens of the birds can descend on the tree, and strip leaves off it with gay abandon, (whilst squawking very loudly!) creating a thick carpet of leaves on the pavement. They also leave ‘calling cards’ over any car that has parked beneath them! We have to keep sweeping the foliage up, as when it gets wet is is a hazard to older people. I love the parakeets, but am not fond of their anti-social habits!

October, the tenth month of the year, was the eighth month of the Roman calendar, and its name came from the Latin word for ‘eight’, which is ‘octo’. I particularly like this month, as it is when I celebrate my birthday - although this year it will be my 70th, and I don’t know if ‘celebrate’ is quite the right word! These landmark birthdays just remind you that you are not only over the hill, but whooshing down the other side! Trees create rings in their trunks as they age, whilst humans get wrinkles not only in their tunks, but everywhere else on their bodies! I am just happy to be here, as nearly three years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer, which spread to various sites in my body. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I know that many of you will have participated in the McMillan Coffee Morning on 30th September. People like me are very grateful that great steps are being taken to conquer all sorts of cancer, as one in three people will have their lives affected by it. Thanks to the wonderful work of The Royal Marsden I live a comparatively normal life, and thanks to chemotherapy and infusions, cope with the disease, whilst still enjoying gardening, dancing and travelling. Hopefully I will be around to bother everyone for a long time to come yet! Unfortunately no new drugs for breast cancer have been offered by the NHS in the last ten years. 9,500 women lose their lives to the disease in England annually. We must all campaign hard to make sure that future generations don’t have their wives, sisters or mothers taken from them because NICE won’t approve of new drugs that could prolong lives. Sadly their decisions are dominated by cost. How can you put a price on treatment that could improve the lives of women and their families in such a major way, when millions are wasted on things like paying footballers thousands of pounds a week, or giving enormous

’golden handshakes’ to various people in the media? Sermon over! On the 8th and 9th of October the national ramble for Children In Need will take place. It is always well promoted by the television programme ’Countryfile’. Last year it raised an amazing amount of money, so get those walking boots out! I recently had a break in Somerset, and visited Stourhead, a magnificent stately home. Its estate covers over two thousand acres, and at the end of the day I felt as if I had covered every one of them! The great thing about walking or rambling is that if you are in good company, you can cover quite a distance without realising it. I also visited Nunney Castle, a magnificent 13th Century ruin that is set within an idyllic village. (See pic). Since the 1990s, the apple industry in England was going through hard times, and consequently Apple Day was born on 21st of the month, in order to encourage our population to grow and eat British varieties of the fruit. Many years ago our apple industry was booming, with wonderful varieties of apples filling orchards nationwide - but most particularly in Kent. In the 1950s, when apples tasted like apples, varieties such as Cox’s Orange Pippin were sweet and succulent, instead of the sour hard imposters we are offered today - which were probably grown somewhere abroad, and sprayed with goodness know what to ensure that they can be stored for ages. Let us hope that Brexit will change farming policies. Anyone under 40 probably doesn’t even know what a Medlar is! On the 29th October don’t forget to put your clocks back one hour. Yes - we all know why we do it, but it is so annoying having to search out all the clocks and watches! On the 30th it will be a new moon. When you look at it turn your money over in your pocket, as superstition tells us that it will bring you good luck! We celebrate Halloween on 31st of the month, much to the irritation of religions everywhere. When I was a girl I once annoyed a nun at my convent by asking her why we were taught to believe in angels, but the Catholic Church frowned on us believing in ghosts and spirits at Halloween. She wasn’t amused, and couldn’t give me a clear answer! (I was a precocious child!). Halloweeen is also sometimes called All Hallows Eve. Its origins are connected with a festival celebrated in Ireland and Scotland on 1st November the night before Samhain, a Celtic Festival. It is also believed that it has connections with The Christian feast of All Souls on 2nd November, when the dead are remembered. The modern Halloween celebrations are mainly for children, who enjoy playing ‘Trick or Treat’ around their neighbourhoods. Despite annual

12

protestations that the festival should be banned, it seems to be entrenched in our culture now, and makes a tidy profit for shops that sell pointy hats ans scary imitation spiders! I don’t want to make you panic, but have you started making those Xmas lists yet?! Catalogues are now constantly landing on the doormat, so we should get ourselves organised soon before we are swallowed up in a mountain of tinsel! Enjoy these colourful days of Autumn while you can. flour and baking powder into a large bowl and add the sugar, butter and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer until the mixture is pale, smooth and creamy.

fold the orange rind and juice into one bowl and the blended cocoa powder into the other.

3. Spoon each mixture into separate greased and base-

lined 18cm square shallow cake tins and level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the cakes are risen and just firm to the touch. Cool for 5 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Trim the edges from each cake then cut each cake

into four even-sized strips. Using a little of the jam, sandwich 2 of the chocolate strips with 2 of the orange flavoured strips to create a chequered effect oblong cake.

5. Roll out half the marzipan on a surface dusted lightly

with icing sugar to an 18 x 30cm rectangle. Brush the top of the assembled cake with a little more jam and press onto the marzipan. Brush the remaining sides of the cake with jam and carefully wrap the marzipan all around the cake. Use your fingertips to crimp along the top edges of the cake. Repeat with the remaining cake strips and marzipan to make a second cake.

View from the City by Justin Urquhart Stewart 7IM So despite the soap opera, what should we be doing? Phew, what a summer! From failed military coups, suspicious or otherwise, to political leaders changing – or not in Labour’s case – and the economic uncertainty that results from Brexit. The net result of this has been the hyperbole from some of our more enthusiastic journalists, leading to some exaggerated headlines which undermines confidence. It is at moments like this that we should in fact sit back and enjoy the theatre of all these changes. I would recommend a decent Sipsmith gin poured over ice and lime with some Fever-Tree tonic water in a long glass. Now we can consider the economic and investment world in a far more objective way. First of all let’s look at the big picture. The global economy figures are very similar from all the leading economic data providers. The IMF have pulled back the growth forecast for 2016 to 3.1% after the Brexit vote, with a figure for next year of 3.4%. The long term average for global growth is around 3%. So no need to panic here. Secondly, the US economic data has also been pretty robust with encouraging employment numbers in particular. Now I suspect that we will be expecting to see these slow down over the forthcoming months, but nonethe-less both confidence and property figures seem pretty positive. Our concerns really seem to be about the less than enthusiastic alternatives that we have for presidential candidates. Both of them are going through their party coronation ceremonies; one is a follically-challenged business buffoon, and the other has a somewhat unreliable track record for telling the truth. The only good news coming out of this will be that the economic policy of the US is going to be dominated far more by the experience of the Federal Reserve and its Chair, Ms. Yellen, and far less reliant on the populist politicians. Next to China. Here, too, we are still seeing good growth figures, although their reliability is always open to question. However at somewhere between 4% & 7%, these are still perfectly positive. The years of double digit growth were too far and too fast. In fact, slower growth on what is now a much a larger value means that in real terms the economy is growing on a larger basis than before. The fears around China are not about the economy, but rather its political actions and influences in the South China Sea. Its superior force may allow it, in effect, to bully the smaller local nations. Now we know I like the number seven, but not when it comes to years of declining job and wage data as is

20

close to the case for South Africa. Already six years into its downward spiral, there doesn’t seem to be too much confidence in the ANC-led Government turning the situation around. And it’s a shame when other emerging markets are used as the yardstick against which investors are judging the rainbow nation. Brazil has been off the charts in terms of its stockmarket rally. Meanwhile Russia’s posturing Putin has caused them quite a few economic woes to rival the rest. But among the emerging market economies, we really only believe it’s the Asian Tigers who will stand the test of time in returning solid investment gains. Then we should turn to the Eurozone, where again figures have not been bad, although the impact of the effect of Brexit has yet to be fully factored in. Lower and slower yes, but still growth. The concern for this area will be the major elections in France and Germany where we are very likely to see changes at the helm. Hollande is struggling to regain credibility and Merkel is trying to ensure a smooth succession to an as yet unknown Prince Regent. Of course there are many other areas to consider especially in the developing world, but even here there have been few new negatives coming to light. Despite recent rises, the commodity prices of metals and oil are still weak, and much of this has already been factored in. Now there is one country which really does gives us cause for question and concern - and that is us. Now here I have to be careful as I may go against my own tenet of not talking down economies. This is easily done and can be very damaging as it impacts both consumer and investor confidence. As yet we have no idea what Brexit really means, but the vote has already had an impact and is shaking confidence. Significant UK property developments have been delayed and some overseas investors have redirected investments elsewhere. The answer is that it will and has already had an impact, but this certainly does not have to be fatal. It rather depends upon what Brexit really involves and what actions the government takes to encourage investments, both internally and externally. For us, as investors, we have to consider some key risks which are heading our way. One, of course, is inflation which, with a weaker Sterling, will inevitably have an impact. Thus interest in linkers and real assets which can provide some inflation hedge will be key parts of portfolios. Additionally, global investment in areas away from the UK will provide a hedge against the lack of clarity around our current economic future. This has already proved beneficial and I suspect will continue. What we cannot do is just sit and stare like those ubiquitous illuminated rabbits watching this political farce play out in front of us. So prepare some of those defences I have described, and also look to build up a cash pot so that you will be able to take advantage of those bouts of volatility which I think are going to be inevitable over the next few months. Although I always say that “you cannot time the market: it is time in the market”, every so often there will be a crash sale when good quality assets are marked down to stupid prices.

Community Christ Church with St Philip to Host Christmas Tree Festival Christ Church with St Philip will be decked out with a majestic collection of Christmas trees this December as part of its first ever Christmas Tree Festival. Running from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th December, the trees will be the focal point of three days of festive celebration, and will be available for local businesses to sponsor in aid of the Church and St Raphael’s Hospice. As well as the tree display, highlights of the Festival include a traditional Christmas fair – featuring craft stalls and a grand prize draw – a dance display and musical performances. It will culminate in a Carols amongst the Trees service with mulled wine and mince pies. People will be able to visit the Church from Friday 12:30-19:30, Saturday 11:30-18:00 and Sunday 12:30-16:00 to enjoy the tree display and take time out of what can often be a busy time of year.

Rev Paul Timmis of Christ Church with St Philip said: “‘Our hope is that the Festival will bring our community together in support not only of the church but also of our wonderful local hospice. We hope it will be the first of many Christmas Tree Festivals and that people will be able to retreat from the hustle and bustle of life to take time to pause and reflect and enjoy the majesty of the trees in our Church.” Organiser Isobel Penny added: “We’re calling on as many individual members of the public and local businesses to get on board and sponsor a tree. In return, their tree will be decorated by a Church or community group and then carry its sponsor’s name and a brief description, before going on display in the church. Having the church filled with beautifully decorated trees really will be a sight to behold.” So far, Dawson Aerial Service Ltd, Garner’s Funeral Directors, Tasty Affair Catering, DalmenyDental Surgery and Brett Holt Solicitors have all signed up as sponsors. For details on how to get involved in the Festival or to sponsor a tree, please contact Isobel Penny at ijpenny@ aol.com.

Gardening Tools of the trade Pippa Greenwood

Autumn is well and truly here. There is plenty to do in the garden and if you want to make jobs as easy and speedy as possible, it is essential that you have the right equipment. Whether you are just out to buy a few new tools or are setting up a selection of equipment for the first time, it really does pay to choose the right things in the first place. What you choose is going to depend to an extent on how often you are likely to do any one job and on the size and type of garden you have. It really is worth buying as good a quality garden tool as possible. Poorly made and badly designed tools can work out a lot more expensive (and frustrating!) in the long run, so start with a few good ones and build up gradually. Try handling any gardening tools before you buy them, so that you can ensure that they are the right size and weight for you and that the handles are comfortable to hold. If the tools do carry a guarantee then make sure that you keep the receipt and any relevant label from the tool itself or else it may well be difficult to prove precisely when you bought it. A good quality fork and spade are essential and they need to be sturdily built if they are to do jobs such as digging, turning over soil and so forth. The neck and head of the spade should be moulded from one piece of metal for added strength. The shaft is usually constructed from wood or metal and make sure that it is firmly attached at both the head end and the handle. Some traditional-style garden tools may have wooden handles but most now have D-shaped plastic handles. Choose forks and blades whose metal parts have been treated to prevent rust. A hand fork and trowel are essential for smaller jobs such as weeding or gardening in confined spaces, and they are also great for moving and dividing smaller plants, for planting bulbs and for mixing up small amounts of compost. These are a tool where it is definitely worth feeling the handle to ensure that that the grip is comfortable. Most garden centres offer stainless steel or coated steel garden tools. Stainless steel does not rust and many people find they move through the soil better, but the price is usually considerably higher. Coated steel tools

38

are much cheaper and provided you keep them clean and oil them at the end of each season and periodically throughout the year, they last well. A hoe is useful for weeding between small and established plants and for aerating the surface of the soil. Keep your hoe sharpened at regular intervals and it will last for ages and slide rapidly and easily through the soil. Most hoes have a 1.5 metre (5 foot) or longer shaft which is comfortable for most gardeners to use. However, if you are very tall, then longer ones may be available from some manufacturers. My favourite is the SpeedHoe, UK designed and with an unusual almost heart-shaped head with a blade running around all edges and a pronged rear, making it the easiest and most effective hoe I’ve ever used. A spring-tined rake is really useful because it has thin flexible wire tines which make it perfect for raking up lightweight debris and fallen leaves or, of course, lawnmower clippings. A garden rake can also be used to rake up leaves although the job is slightly harder, but its main use is to break up lumps of soil and help you to create a fine level area for sowing seed, whilst at the same time removing stones, lumps and other debris. You can then use the head of the rake to help level off the soil. If you plan to grow vegetables, then a small hoe known as an onion hoe is an invaluable tool and allows you to weed quickly and easily, even between fairly closely spaced crops. You can also use it to weed in amongst ornamental plants of course. For really tight spaces and weeding between paving, and in gravel in asparagus beds etc, I’m addicted to my SpeedWeeder, a small redhandled tool l which is the best I have used for hoiking out dandelion roots in one piece too! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, pull-out EasyTunnels, biocontrols for vine weevils, leatherjackets and chafergrubs, signed books and lots more.

TIME TO REFLECT

DECISION TIME

With three quarters of the year behind us, and the autumn market ahead, its time to reflect on what’s happening in the property market. The first quarter of the year was very busy indeed. Nationally buy-to-let accounted for 23% of purchases before March. Locally that trend was stronger. The following couple of months continued to be very active and prices edged upwards. During this period ‘Open Days’ were the practical way to do viewings, minimising disruption for vendors while giving as many potential buyers as possible the opportunity to view. The market calmed slightly ahead of the referendum, at a time when it would normally have done so anyway, and noticeably quietened thereafter.

House hunters tend to start their search in the early part of the year unsure of what exactly they are looking for and, often, which area they want to settle in. Its also a period during which they firm up their budget and determine the level of mortgage they can obtain. Some will put their move on hold for another year or more at that point but those that don’t are in a strong position to buy and generally know exactly what they are looking for and where. As a result the autumn property market has a very different feel about it. The number of viewers is lower but those that are looking are no longer trying to assess what it is they want, they are in the final phase of their search and keen to move before the end of the year. As Having said that the activity over the a result Autumn can be a great time to sell. summer was no lower than normal despite TIME FOR A SNOOZE the plentiful distractions of good weather, The summer has been lovely with its fair holidays, political uncertainty and major share of heatwaves. Events Sir Norman Wisdom: An exhibition of his life Sir Norman Wisdom, actor, comedian, and singer-songwriter, was best known for a series of comedy films produced between 1953 and 1966. For many years Sir Norman had a flat in Epsom, and was often seen shopping in the area or eating in his favorite fish and chip shop in Ewell, as well as being a cult figure in Albania! Bourne Hall Museum has been most fortunate in being able to secure the loan of the official exhibition of his life and work from his family. The exhibition contains theatre posters, handwritten scripts, and film stills. His musical instruments will be here along with the original suit used in the Pinewood films and the Aladdin’s lamp from the 1956 production The Wonderful Lamp. There’s also a chance to see his awards

including the British Film Academy Award 1954 and New Musical Express 1954 Record of the Year. For details of events and talks during the exhibition, you can email dbrooks@epsom-ewell. gov.uk. The exhibition will run from 4 October 2016 to 12 March 2017 at Bourne Hall Museum - the first time that it has been displayed in the South of England.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

All of this should incense any true wildlife lover.

Who Cares For Badgers?

Bovine TB has been a problem for dairy farmers ever since the industry became more mechanised and intensified. Herds are too large for the space they must occupy, and disease spreads rapidly in overcrowded conditions. Animals wandering through the pastures can carry the infection from one herd to another- unfortunately for badgers, they move over quite a distance at night, and so have been the main vectors, resulting in their wholesale persecution. Shooting them, however, terrifies them, and disperses a population, thereby carrying the disease, if it is present, further afield. In the days of the plague, the only ‘infection control’ policy that worked to halt the spread was isolation. Badgers pick up the disease from infected cows and take it to other herds on their nocturnal rambles. It should not be possible for a badger to pass through a field containing infected cows- the cows should not be out in the fields if they are ill, but the whole herd isolated and treated. ( Too expensive?)

Recently the government began issuing licences for people with guns to go out and kill badgers again. Despite all the scientific evidence that culling has not worked and will never work, they rolled out the cull to seven counties of England this year. From August 1975 to June 1982, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food gassed 4,500 badger setts in an attempt to eradicate bovine tuberculosis. ( MAFF was an earlier incarnation of DEFRA.). Gassing was stopped because it was found to be ineffective and considered to be inhumane. This year up to 14,000 badgers are to be slain, even though the evidence from the trials in the last 3 years has shown shooting them to be as ineffective at eradicating the disease as gassing was - in fact the majority of the badgers gunned down during this period were animals who were completely free of bovine TB. The policy is ‘shoot on sight, then carry out a post-mortem to see if the animal you killed was, in fact, a carrier. Whoops, it wasn’t - oh well, never mind, it’s just a useless piece of pesky wildlife, so no matter. Unlike most culls with guns, for example the deer culls in the Royal Parks, the shooters are not trained marksmen who can kill with a single, clean shot. The trigger-happy killers of badgers are landowners who want rid of badgers on their land. Their reasons may have nothing to do with being dairy farmers, but they are happy to have the excuse, especially if they have friends among the dairy farming community. They are not all good shots, and many badgers over the past 3 years have died horribly from terrible wounds that did not instantly kill them. Scores of injured badgers have been picked up by wildlife lovers and taken to hospitals, where some recovered, but too many had to be put out of their misery. I have friends in Cornwall, where the cull is now going on - people who personally know some of the people with the guns, who go out sabotaging the efforts of these wildlife criminals, at great risk to their own safety. A vaccination programme for badgers would be the best and most humane solution, but so far this advice has fallen on deaf ears -there are powerful lobbyists at work here, people who do not like badgers. It is a well -known fact that people who farm animals do not like any wildlife that interferes with their operations and affects their profits. Foxes and badgers are, to them. simply ‘vermin’ and birds of prey will come into this category very often too.

46

One reason that bovine TB is hard to control is antibiotic resistance, which has come about through the unwise practice on so many animal farms, of adding antibiotics to the fodder. The rationale for this has been to try to keep diseases at bay - because a diseased animal cannot go to slaughter for human consumption and cows with mastitis cannot be milked - but the practice has, of course, resulted in the growth of superbugs against which antibiotics now have no defence. We have, by this method, inoculated our animals - and ourselves - against many antibiotics. When we buy and consume animal products from conventional farms (not organic) we are putting these antibiotics into ourselves, and, through us, into the water system via our waste products. Thus, all of us are also gradually building up a resistance to antibiotics - the cases of superbugs in hospitals are rising because of this. The guidelines for dairy herds with mastitis - a painful disease of the udder, caused by frequent and unceasing lactation (totally unnatural and forced by us) - allow for ‘acceptable levels of pus’ in the milk. This is so suffering animals may be brought back into the production line as soon as possible. It is all about profit - the welfare of the animals, and even human health, really isn’t the paramount consideration of the dairy industry, whatever the individual farmers in the system might actually believe or think. Studies are repeatedly showing that milk from cows is actually not good for people -we have, of course, been lied to - by the vested interests whose wealth is threatened by the truth. Dairy consuming cultures like ours have high incidences of bone fracture, osteoporosis

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

There are plenty of alternatives to dairy milk on sale in any supermarket nowadays, and to order online from Ocado.

The Dairy Industry is a killing industry. It kills all of its male calves as ‘wastage’, all of it’s cows who are ‘past optimum milk production’ ( industry label is ‘spent’), badgers as scapegoats for a preventable and controllable disease, and - ultimately- people too, from the diseases listed above, Many of us also suffer from minor complaints which we never realise are linked to our consumption of dairy - until we stop, and find ourselves free of them. Sinusitis is one, irritable bowel is another, and finger nails that sport white marks or keep splitting, to name but a few. It is also becoming apparent that a lot of childhood allergies, and even asthma, could very well be partly due to high consumption of dairy products. There is no doubt in my mind that, without a dairy industry to blame, the government could not get away with handing out licences to kill a species of iconic wildlife which is supposed to be ‘protected’ by our pretty useless wildlife protection laws. I am also in no doubt that the whole of the animal farming sector is the barrier to the re-introduction of many predator species who belong, naturally, in our ecosystems. People who breed pheasants for others to kill for fun do not like badgers, because they will take pheasant eggs, and even young chicks, and ‘spoil’ the sport and ‘steal’ some of the profits. Yet, who has the more right to be on that land? The badger who is a Native wild creature, with a birthright of free, wild living - not some unnecessary ‘industry’ based on violence and greed. Several of those going out with guns to gleefully shoot badgers will be that variety of human being we call gamekeepers - and quite a ‘game’ it is to be sure, slaughtering wild animals and shooting birds from the sky - what fun!

There is oat milk, hemp milk, almond milk and coconut milk - it isn’t all soya. You can get non dairy versions of yogurt, ice cream, custard, cream and chocolate. Many will be in the Free From sections of supermarkets, others will just be further along in the chiller or freezer aisle. They are all delicious and much better for you than the milk of another species, laced with growth hormone and antibiotics and an ‘acceptable level of pus’. If anyone wishes to support those who are out at night trying to prevent badgers getting killed, please look up ‘Stop The Cull’ on Facebook or Twitter for details. You can also google The Badger Trust or any of the Wildlife Trusts in the West Country - Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset.

and arthritis in later age, breast and prostate cancers, and Type 2 diabetes. Most people in the world do not consume dairy - and they have very few incidences of all these conditions. When Colin T Campbell conducted his research into the traditional Chinese diet and compared it with the diets of Westernised Chinese, he discovered that diets high in animal products are the main cause of most of the diseases which cripple the NHS today cancers, heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The book, called The China Study is erudite and well -researched and written in a way that all of us can understand.

Anyone who cares about badgers should - and could easily - ditch dairy. It would mean you stopped supporting an industry which wants to shoot badgers instead of cleaning up its own act, as well as probably lining you up for a few health problems they don’t wish you to know about. Plant-based milks are a healthy alternative and use up a lot less water, per litre, to produce, so are far more sustainable and environmentally sound.
