Welcome to

our February edition

D ear All, So, we’ve made it to the end of January! The Christmas

Decorations are (finally) back up in the loft, we’ve forgotten all about those resolutions we made so earnestly as Big Ben struck midnight and we’ve even survived the so-called most depressing day of the year (21st January, in case you didn’t notice!) Some of us will even be cracking open a bottle of bubbly to celebrate the end of a month of sobriety (congratulations to all readers who successfully completed the “Dryathlon” challenge, many of whom were also raising funds for various charities as they turned their back on the booze for a whole month!) And others will just be hoping we’ve seen the last of the snow and ice that plagued us for the middle part of the month and will be looking forward to Spring (as the nights start to get just everso slightly longer and the odd, defiant crocus pops up in our gardens!) I’ve certainly noticed lots of runners (of all ages and abilities) and MAMILS (middle aged men in lyrca!) pounding the streets and cycle lanes since the start of the year. Don’t forget there are plenty of opportunities to get active and to meet new and like-minded people in the area, with all sorts of clubs

Why advertise with us? Worcester Park Life is such a great local magazine to advertise my business in. I got so much interest. I started my baby/ toddler music classes in August. I am now opening the forth and fifth classes. Thanks to Worcester Park Life. Ginger from Music Fun As “the local plumber” I’m pleased to be a part of the New Malden Village Voice and Worcester Park Life communities, living and working with the people in the area. The publications bring me a lot of my local work and Jenny manages my Ad in a very helpful, professional manner. I’ve been a regular advertiser in both magazines for a couple of years now and would thoroughly recommend the service to other local, small businesses. Andy Reeve, plumber

locally. But, if you’d rather partake in sporting activity from the comfort of your sofa, then of course the Rugby 6 Nations kicks off on Feb 2nd, just down the road at Twickenham (and with a half Welsh/Irishman, a Scot and two ‘sort of’ English girls in our house, it’s certainly fun for all the family!) So, whatever you’re up to – have a great February. Happy Valentines! And best wishes until next time

Fundraising Santa Dash

It’s quite simple, isn’t it? See an advertisement,

respond and take part. Take part in what you ask. Well, the Santa dash! Remember the advert in Worcester Park Life? Anyone can walk/run three quarters of a mile, can’t they? Add two grandchildren aged three and 15 months and it becomes a fun event. It was agreed that Nanny and Grandad would run with the grandchildren-Daniel and Sarah. So far, so good. The raising of funds was a family effort. Grandchildren were used shamelessly, persuasion, arm twisting, even offering to show photos so business acquaintances could have proof of our run (and a smile at us dressed as Santas). Nearer the event we collected our Santa outfits and proudly showed them to three year old Daniel. His response was that he didn’t like the outfit and wanted to be a green elf. Nanny obliged by making him a green outfit, complete with green hat and bell on the top. The day dawned and it was, miraculously, a fine day. Since we live near to Nonsuch park I suggested that we walk to the park dressed in our Santa outfits. This was vetoed on the grounds that nobody in their right mind would walk along the road dressed as Santa-what would the neighbours think? In the car, drive to Nonsuch, with Daniel still undecided whether to be a Santa or an elf. Eventually, surrounded by about sixty other Santas, Daniel agreed to conform and lined up at the start dressed as Santa. At the start it was obvious that there were hare Santas and tortoise Santas. We fell somewhere in the middle. The Santa outfits were one size for children and one size for adults. No real problem with the adult outfits. We could hold the bits that worked loose. Sarah sat in her pushchair smiling benignly so she was happy. Daniel suffered one or two wardrobe malfunctions-his Santa trousers kept falling down. After hoisting them several times we decided the most efficient to finish the run was to remove them. So Daniel was lifted out of his red trousers and completed the run in his own trousers and a long Santa jacket and hat. The beard was lost en route. We split our team-Grandma pushed or leaned on the buggy and Grandad and Daniel ran together. Daniel was determined to beat Nanny so, by careful race control, we kept just ahead of the Grandma/pushchair party. I think we were all credited with the same time of about ten minutes. Happily, at the finish we were cheered by an adoring crowd of family and friends. We were also each

6

presented with a medal for completing the run. Daniel wore his for the next two days. After all this effort we have been rewarded by friends, family and work colleagues. We have managed to collect over £1000. Daniel will be presenting a cheque at St. Raphaels Hospice. His first taste of celebrityunless he decides he wants to be an elf. WPLife

Worcester Park History Stoneleigh Park and Cuddington Residents’ Association This month I thought it

would be good to interrupt my series about The Manor Drive and look back almost exactly 80 years to the formation of the Stoneleigh Park and Cuddington Residents’ Association. Before you ask ‘What is an article about a Stoneleigh association doing in Worcester Park Life?’, I should explain that this association was indeed a Worcester Park organisation, covering the area between Central Road, Oaks Avenue, Sparrow Farm Road and the railway line – part of the ‘Stoneleigh estate’ which belonged to the Stone family from 1860 until it was sold for development, mainly in the 1930s. The inaugural meeting of what was originally called the Stoneleigh Park Residents’ Association was held in March 1933 in The Kettle Sings, a café at 127 Central Road, a little way above Stone Place. The Chair was taken by Mr Cronk, of the firm which had built the homes of many of the original members, in roads such as Stoneleigh Avenue and Bridgewood Road. A committee was formed, and by the end of the year about 250 residents had joined; the association soon found itself involved in the debate over the renaming of what was at that time called Stoneleigh Drive – which ultimately became Lynwood Drive and Stoneleigh Avenue. The making-up of roads, the planting of trees, and the preservation of Nonsuch Park as an open space were among other early topics of concern. A number of the early Committee members served for many years: Mr H B Jones became Secretary around the end of 1933 and in the following March was elected Chairman; although he retired in 1938, he returned as Chairman the next year, under the emergency conditions following the outbreak of war, and continued to fill the role until 1957. Mr J E Percy joined the Executive Committee in about 1934, and served as Secretary from 1939 to 1952. The Association was very enthusiastic in its provision of social activities, many of which took place in Cuddington Recreation ground, situated at the heart

of the Association’s area of coverage. Mr Jones and Mr Percy were among those involved in the formation of a Cricket Club in 1934, and a Bowls Club – later Cuddington Bowling Club – in 1936. A Football Club was also formed in 1934, and that was the year in which the first annual sports day was held, and a Christmas party arranged for local children, whilst 1937 saw the founding of a Swimming Club. In 1935 a front gardens competition was inaugurated, and a silver cup was presented by Mr George Blunt, joined in 1936 by a cup for back gardens, the gift of Cllr H J Trickett. Cups were also presented for the best performances at the children’s

sports, by Mr Hambrook and Mr Clive Smith. Some of the Association’s activities reflected national events: in 1937 a Coronation sub-committee arranged events in the Rec ranging from dances to a baby show competition. Membership reached 670 by the end of that year. During the war years many of the usual activities had to be suspended, and the Association instead became involved in war savings, comforts for the Forces, air raid precautions and allotments. Mr Percy and Mr Jones were particularly active in helping householders with war damage claims. After the war, social activities resumed, including a children’s party in January 1947, annual sports days, and coach trips to Brighton, Bognor and Worthing. In 1953 the Association was once again involved in Coronation celebrations, arranging two tableaux for a Borough procession. An outing to the Isle of Wight became an annual feature of the Association’s calendar, and in the later 1950s there was even an outing to Llandudno, involving an overnight stay. I have based this account of the first 25 years of the SP&CRA on an anniversary article by ‘Recorder’ in their newsletter The Gazette from August 1958 (the cover of which appears as our illustration this month), kindly lent to me by Martin Gibbard. The newsletter is a fascinating source of information about local concerns and activities, and features advertisements for many

well-known local businesses such as J C Pearson (horticultural supplies), G W Young (builder) and Harold Aldridge (menswear). So far I have only been able to track down four editions of the newsletter (Feb 1957, Aug 1958, Apr 1959 and Oct 1971), but it began in May 1933 (it was produced monthly for much of the 1930s) and continued at least until the 1960s, but I know little of the association’s later history, or indeed when it closed. So, can any WPL readers help? Do you have a bundle of editions of The Gazette in your attic? Or did you keep just one or two editions, perhaps because you or your children were listed as winning a prize in the association’s sports day or the gardens competition? Do you have the association’s minute books or other archives in a cupboard? It would be great if we could mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the association by collecting together as many Gazettes and other items as possible and presenting them, or copies of them, to the Borough archives at Sutton Library, for everyone to enjoy. If you have any SP&CRA material, even just a single Gazette, and would be willing either to donate the originals, or to allow me to copy them, I should be very pleased to hear from you. Clean up the eyesore please! Local people in Worcester Park are coming

together to try and get the graffiti removed from The Worcester Park Rail bridge. The bridge has been an eyesore at the heart of Worcester Park for at least a decade now. The facebook page, created to drum up support, now has the support of 100 local people and is growing all the time. So far attempts to persuade Network Rail to resolve this issue has fallen on deaf ears, so the group are asking local people to email Network Rail Chief Executive, David Higgins directly on david.higgins@networkrail. co.uk to try and gain his attention and force Network Rail to take some action.

Ruth Jemmett Writes Love and haddocks R uth Jemmett explores the many faces of love. The month of February is one that can make our hearts leap. Sometimes such cardiac activity is caused by the arrival of a large gas bill thudding on the door mat during an icy winter - but it can also be created by the anticipation of receiving a Valentine card from one’s beloved - or even a person unknown. No matter how jaded we feel after the overindulgences of December or from suffering frostbitten fingers in January, it is a very embittered curmudgeon indeed whose heart doesn’t flutter just the teensiest bit at the prospect of receiving tangible proof that cupid’s arrows might be heading in our direction. Even better if you feel the same way about the sender! At this time of the year the word ’love’ hangs heavy in the air, but what exactly IS love? Poets and philosophers have struggled for centuries to sum up the feeling that can cancel out all reasoning, and sometimes drive people to murder or the edge of madness? (Yes - I know - a long queue in the supermarket can have the same effect on some of you, but I am attempting to explore humanity’s finer feelings here, and the frustration at not being able to pay for your turkey twizzlers quickly at a checkout doesn’t come into the same league I’m afraid …..). Most of us like to imagine that true love is a thing of beauty, but not everyone feels the same way about it. The late Hollywood film actor John Barrymore once famously said that “Love is the delightful interlude between meeting a girl and then realising that she looks like a haddock”. What we perceive as love comes in all sorts of guises. Doubtlessly, with a few exceptions, the love between mothers and their babies is the strongest one in the world. (Shortly after birth both mother and baby actually share the same brainwave patterns when they dream, even though they are physically separated.) . Humanity wouldn’t have survived this long if such a special bond didn’t exist. As children grow up their use of the word ‘love’ can encompass enjoying their favourite computer game, their favourite food (those turkey twizzlers have a lot to answer for…) or their

16

current school crush. The latter can change from week to week, and such passion can be snuffed out in seconds if a better offer comes along - probably sporting the latest haircut or possessing fewer pimples. In the adult world the ‘L’ word is bandied about recklessly in the media and music world. Television adverts tell us that we will ‘love’ a new product, be it yoghurt, underwear or vacuum cleaners. Some mothers ‘love’ their children so much that they are loath to let them eventually lead their own lives, keeping their babies unnaturally close to them - even when they are fully-fledged adults sporting moustaches and good careers. (Yes, I know - some of those female athletes can look a bit scary …). Mother-in-law jokes are firmly rooted in all cultureswith good reason. Boys of all ages usually ‘love’ sport, often putting it way ahead of personal relationships. Male ‘love’ of cars can be a lifetime passion. Why do you think that so many men give their cars girls’ names? Perhaps they prefer one sort of old boot to another - and one that won’t answer back! Apart from my test-run love at my junior school (whom regular readers of this article

will recall from a previous piece of mine) my first real sweetheart was a boy called Chris Dreja, who lived in nearby Surbiton at a time when we were both thirteen years old. We spent many hours together chatting and painting. (I was always a creative little thing). He took me on my first real date to the now demolished Rembrandt cinema at Ewell Court. As I was starry-eyed at the thought of having a boyfriend for the first time I overlooked the fact that I had to pay for my own chocolates and sit in the front row, which gave me a crick in the neck. Time moved on - and so did both of our lives - his in spectacular fashion. He grew up to be a member of the world famous 60s pop group, The Yardbirds, travelling in a superstar style, leaving this aspiring writer in his wake. I like to think that in some way I influenced his creativity - or it might just have been that he chose to travel worldwide to get away from me! Anyway, I thought I would put it on record that I was a dolly bird in my day I didn’t ALWAYS wear jeans with an elasticated waistband! (Note to all you young things - you too will one day know the delights - and delicious comfort - of the aforesaid waistband!). No - we didn’t share true love, but I had a gorgeous Border Collie dog at home at the time, so I transferred my passion to a grateful mutt who I KNEW adored me! As we travel along life’s path most of us are seeking mutual love of some kind - apart from a few narcissists, who always prefer the reflection in the mirror to the thought of sharing life’s delights with

another person. Unfortunately infatuation and sex can often be mis-interpreted as meaningful feelings. Countless single mothers bear witness to the fact that “I thought he LOVED me!”. One of life’s lessons is that we should never assume that other people are seeing things through our eyes. Women are biologically programmed to find a mate and nest, whereas men (bless their cute little socks) are programmed to, shall we say, see things a little differently. Somewhere along the way most of us find someone to hang our dreams on. For the unfortunate few the rose-coloured glasses can become cracked, and the idyllic dream can become a nightmare. Women now instigate over 70% of divorces in this country …. probably due to the fact that they are fed up with washing the cute but smelly socks of a partner who puts his car/sport/ or secretary ahead of a woman who gave up her dreams of being a brain surgeon to set up home with him. As Shakespeare told us - “The course of true love never did run smooth”, so on this coming Valentine’s Day try and smooth YOUR romantic path by putting your beloved’s needs before your own on a regular basis. Love is all about give and take. Once you get the balance right, your partner is much less likely to run off with a bit of young bait in the office - and hopefully, neither of you will EVER look like a haddock to the other! The Tops

Ifirstcantopened believe it’s been 25 years since The Tops Salon its doors back in 1988.

Tracy Says, My love of hairdressing is still as strong today as it was back then obviously with a few more years experience under my belt, Ha ha I am very lucky to have had great staff working alongside me. I am well aware without a trusted, reliable and loyal team the business wouldn’t have had the success it has. We also have a lovely client base that spans the 25 years with some even longer than that. I would really like to take this chance to thank all our lovely clients for their support and custom over the years It really is very much appreciated. When you’ve done someones hair for many years they become a friend not just a client. We all go though ups and downs in life and if having their hair done and a good old chat about things helps them leave us looking good and feeling better we’e done our job and that is a great feeling! We do our best to always give the client what they want. Some times this is not possible because for example

18

their hair type would not be suitable for the style they have picked or we are worried about the condition of the hair etc, In these cases will will try to find them a solution so they still leave the salon happy and their hair looks great! We always listen to what the client wants and for all you ladies that get scared that a little trim will turn into a 5 inches off night mare don’t be! if you only want a little trim thats what you will get! We always do our best to give you what you want!. Take a look at the new web site or call in to see one of the team. Consultations are free and we would love to meet you. www.thetopssalon.com WPLife

The Better Life

Wood Glorious Wood by Derek Thompson

When I was growing up in London, my

relationship with making the fire began and ended with a plug and a switch. Things are much different now; living in the West Country, where burning almost anything else would be preferable (and cheaper) to putting on the oilfired central heating. Logs are a bit of a science. We’ve found oak, beech and ash to be best, in order of preference, but conifer wood does the job too if it’s properly seasoned. Our usual supplier is about five miles away and by the time we’ve unloaded his trailer and I’ve stacked the wood in the garage, I’m usually so warmed up that I try to convince Anne we can skip the fire for a day. Then I’m literally and figuratively out in the cold. Using local and sustainable sources of wood fits in perfectly with our Better Life approach. When we lost our cypress tree, after a succession of gales split the main trunk so that I could look right through it, nothing was wasted. Even the smaller branches were

stored and dried out for a year to make a plentiful supply of kindling. It was a sad day indeed though - not least for the chickens, who once escaped their compound and sought asylum in the upper branches, in a series of impressive short take-offs. The previous year, our ash tree had to come down because it was pushing against a neighbour’s garage wall. That also served us well, a year later. Even so, I never feel good about losing a tree. Not only do our remaining trees provide an important habitat for birds and other wildlife, they also give us some privacy in the garden, so the neighbours can’t see how poorly the last of the chard is doing. As our gradual conversion from urbanites to ruralites has progressed, we have become expert in the art of foraging for kindling. When you know where to look, just like love, it’s all around you. For example, a local farm shop often has a supply of unwanted wooden fruit boxes. We’ve also found hidden treasure in skips - always with the owner’s permission. And once, when our foraging fame spread, a neighbour alerted

there’s a gale, we’re off into the woods, rucksacks at the ready - combining exercise with recycling. I think the villagers are used to us now, although I did once hear someone singing Good King Wenceslas - the part about a poor man gathering winter fuel. It’s less about saving a pound or two and more about being consistent in our philosophy. There’s a certain delight in making use of something that no one else wants, whether it’s wooden offcuts, windfall or abandoned and broken pallets, especially when it also helps to reduce our fuel bills. I like to think of us as the Wombles of Wood. A wood merchant has occasionally furnished us with offcuts and sawdust for the chickens, in exchange for eggs, which seems a pretty good deal all round. And of course, the nearby woods are a boon. View from the City

the perils of fashion fads and tank tops by Justin Urquhart Stewart

W hen it comes to watching asset classes year by year it is always amusing to see how this year’s hot tip can so easily become next year’s embarrassment. I have just been looking at a snapshot of the latest year on year change to asset classes and not unsurprisingly a similar

pattern is coming out. In 2011, the laggards were Private Equity, along with Emerging Market and European Equities all showing double digit losses; meanwhile it was Gold, Gilts and Index Linked that took all the plaudits for being the fashion fads of the year. So if we roll forward another twelve months and low and behold, Gold has lost much of its lustre and Index Linked has also lost its earlier attractions. Meanwhile it

was the unfashionable tank tops that came back again for 2012 with Private Equity up 25%. Emerging Market shares up 17%, and of course the most unfashionable of all – European shares up nearly 15% - with of course the most unloved of all – Greece, where the Athens Stock Exchange General index was up a remarkable total return of over 38%. We always need to be reminded against following slavishly last year’s fashionable tips. For most of us, the blend of asset classes will usually provide a far steadier and more predictable return. It may sound quite dull or even boring in comparison, but far better that we grow our assets steadily over time rather than be taking bigger and riskier bets for shorter term gains (and losses!). In fact a balanced portfolio over 2012 would have done as expected and been roughly in the middle of all the asset classes at around 8-10%. Killing the retail zombies to allow the next generation of development As another famous name went into administration last week, so another tooth in the decaying smile of the retail high street fell out. In fact as smiles go, the high

street is looking like a dental disaster. Although as yet we don’t know the eventual fate of HMV or Blockbuster, it follows a growing line of retail failures including well known names such as Comet and Jessops. However, we can also add the number of stores being closed by other weakened names including JJB Sports, Clinton Cards, Game Group and Peacocks and no doubt others will follow. Obviously each closure of a store or business is a personal tale of financial pain and worry to those involved both as employees, investors and suppliers. However, the retail world is going through a huge change, not just technologically but also economically. We all know that a significant proportion of in-store purchases have been replaced by on-line purchases (and has increased that related effect of having to queue at the local sorting office on a Saturday morning for your goods!), but when compounded by a weakened economy and consumer confidence then this really is a perfect storm for some. Others of course have been more successful even in these difficult times - John Lewis partnership comes to mind. However, we should also see such actions as being part of the normal order of clearing out the dead wood to allow the new shoots to come through. Such companies can attract quite correctly the popular title of zombie company, as they can’t grow, they won’t die and they just exist by taking up valuable capital and

cash. But the demise of the zombies you will allow the redeployment of capital and effort into newer growing businesses and despite the shorter term pain, we will see longer term gain. As for the high streets, the local authorities should use their imagination (surely an oxymoron?) to make plans to draw people back into the centres and not push them away. Some of the parking laws and charges are barking, and dissuade anybody from coming in. Other issues are the mix of shops which should be managed to encourage the right profile and interest. Otherwise you will end up with a sad line-up of pay day loans, bookies and charity shops. Shopping properly managed is a form of entertainment – tragic high streets are not. Thought should be applied on housing development opportunities to address shortages especially in the South East. We shouldn’t be despondent, but rather imaginative and already we saw in Q3 last year an increase in the number of jobs in retail and wholesale. WPLife Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor.

Seasonal recipe

Satay Vegetable Skewers serves 4 Iflavoursome f you are short on time but still want a supper then try these delicious

vegetable kebabs with a lovely spicy peanut sauce and spring onion noodles. For non-veggie kebabs replace the aubergine with cubes of lean pork or chicken fillet and cook for 15-20 minutes until the meat is cooked through and lightly charred. • 100g crunchy peanut butter • 25g creamed coconut, chopped • 1/2 tsp chilli powder • 1 garlic clove peeled and crushed • 4 tbsp soy sauce • 3 small peppers (red, green and yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces • 4 thick slices of aubergine • 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 3 tbsp sesame oil • 4 nests fine egg noodles • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced Tip If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a pre-heated grill or use a heavy-based shallow frying pan and add a little oil. Place the peanut butter, coconut, chilli powder and garlic in a small pan with 180ml water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary. Par-boil the peppers in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 pre-soaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges. Preheat a cast-iron griddle pan until almost smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs. Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred. Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a large pan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce. WPLife

do you decide on a suitable exercise regime to help you lose weight and regain vitality? Working out at home with the help of a video console has become a popular alternative to going out to a dance class or a gym. The great advantage is that it allows you to design a programme to suit your own needs and preferences. However if - like me - you’re not a great self-motivator, you may find it hard to keep going without a human instructor to give encouragement. After several attempts to follow an aerobic routine in my lounge I made the decision to join a regular exercise class. A quick browse round the websites of local clubs brings up an array of exercise styles with exoticsounding names such as Zumba, Pilates, Ashtanga Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi. It’s nice to be spoiled for choice, but there are a few things to consider before you start. How old are you? Do you have any medical conditions? How much exercise do you normally take? If a leisurely stroll round the supermarket is your main form of exercise then a cardiovascular workout is probably not the place to start. You need to build your programme slowly, so you could begin with a

Community WP Postcard

A postcard featuring Worcester Park, as it appeared

and was painted in 1926 has been on sale at the newspaper kiosk in Worcester Park Station, with all the profits raising funds for our local St. Raphael’s Hospice. By Christmas Eve, kiosk owner Paul (in the photo) and his team had reached the £100 mark, which was presented to the Hospice in time for Christmas. The postcard is still available from the station kiosk or via the Friends of Worcester Park library. The original painting (from which the postcard is reproduced) appeared at auction in Canterbury and returned home, over 85 years after it was painted. The artist, Jack Ducker, painted many rural English and Scottish landscapes during the 1920s and his view of Worcester Park's open fields, woodlands and grazing farm animals has much changed in the intervening years! With the aid of the artist’s description on the rear of the painting, photographs, maps contemporary with the painting and the help of local historian and WP Life writer, David Rymill, it was eventually concluded that

the only location that fitted the painted scene is modern day ‘Sparrow Farm Road’ on the edge of Worcester Park and Stoneleigh. Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan “There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want” Bill Watterson

W hy are we so poor at dealing with bad weather? Why is it that it seems to catch us by surprise? It’s winter.

It happens at pretty much the same time every year. It gets cold. It rains and it often snows! The Polish guys working on our house find it hard to believe, moaning about how long it had taken to get home because the trains had stopped running, saying, “At home, it is minus sixteen and half a metre of snow.” I’m sure that other Northern European citizens laugh their socks off at our pathetic attempts to keep our country going under 6cm of snow and temperatures just below freezing: schools close early, trains stop running and commuters are forced to dash home early just in case.

2012’s most Unusual Excuses for missing work • I forgot I had been hired for the job. • My dog was having a nervous breakdown. • My dead grandmother was being exhumed for a police investigation. • My toe was stuck in a tap. • A bird bit me. • I was upset after watching The Hunger Games. • I got sick from reading too much. • I was suffering from a broken heart. • My hair turned orange from dying my hair at home. WPLife

U %ected 5on0sel

National Sickie Day However, the recent bad weather has led me to another conclusion. We probably aren’t that bad at dealing with it we just like to use it as an excuse for some extra time off. Snow days have become a national institution, a great excuse for a day off but not the only one: apparently the first Monday in February is often dubbed ‘national sickie day’, when staff are most likely to take an unofficial day off. (A survey by Career Builder of more than 2,400 employers and 3,900 workers found that, with heightened absenteeism generally increases around holidays, December is the leading month with twenty percent of employers reporting their employees call in sick most that month. July is the nextmost popular month to call in sick, followed by January and February.) Here are some of the most frequently used excuses and there pitfalls: I’ve got a bad cold/cough This is a classic that works a treat if performed correctly. Expert malingerers make sure to set it up with some groundwork, maybe a few sneezes a couple of days earlier. Please note that is a big giveaway a) getting someone to ring in for you, when most ‘illnesses’) wouldn’t normally prevent you from picking up the phone or b) getting spotted in, say Chiccos, enjoying a latte. Food poisoning ‘I ate some dodgy seafood’ – who could prove that it wasn’t a twenty four hour bug, that came on with no warning and the obvious after-effects. However, don’t overdo it by offering too much detail which might suggest that you are lying. My child is sick This is an area where employers will generally give leeway. Be warned, a lack of groundwork can cause embarrassment if, for example, the child you are supposed to be looking after rings the office to speak to you! A morning in mourning Unbelievable as it sounds, funeral attendance is a commonly-used excuse for absenteeism. Employees have

been known to invent a favourite aunt or uncle, but being able to remember the story is vital as it is not unheard of for a grandmother to have ‘died’ on five different occasions over a two-year period. Travel Chaos So easy to believe in the UK. Bad weather during winter months; train delays; car trouble or an accident en route are all excuses that can be used. You do need to make sure your that story tallies with where you live. It’s no good having a cheeky lie-in, trailing in several hours late then seeing a colleague who makes the same journey as you sitting there, having arrived at nine am on the dot. Wrong trousers, wrong day While most of the above can be pulled off if delivered with enough conviction, there are some that just can’t. Like the chap who rang in one day to tell his manager that he ‘thought it was Sunday so I won’t be in this morning’. Honest maybe, but not likely to save his job. Let’s just hope it snows some more and we can all legitimately stay in bed!

Tree care Evergreens

Sonlycots3 native Pine along with the Yew and Juniper are the evergreen trees in our country and as such

they should have value to our history and gardens! At the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago, vast tracts of our country were covered by these trees along with Birch, Oaks and Rowan. The forests have been cleared over thousands of years leaving a few remnant areas pre dominantly in Scotland where the climate still suits this assemblage of trees. In there prime these forests supported wildlife as diverse as beavers, brown bears, wolves, lynx and the golden eagle. The re introduction of beavers in recent years is a significant move to restore this ancient environment. As trees Scots Pines are interesting and attractive additions to many medium and large size gardens. Most trees grow to a height of 20m or more over a period of up to about 250 years, examples of these trees reaching an age of over 600 years has been recorded in Norway. The evergreen tree has needles that last up to 4 years along with 7cm seed cones containing the seeds that disperse in the wind on small wings. I particularly admire the bark of these trees with an attractive flaky

texture and range of colours through the year from a grey shade to a vibrant orange/red hue. These trees are a valuable timber resource in many parts of the world being grown on huge plantations especially for the construction industry. The industry is very concerned over the dual problems of pinewood nematode causing wilt and rapid death in those over 10 years of age and the fungus Fusarium circinatum causing pitch cankers on the branches and trunk. If you spot a resin like weeping canker or rapid dieback of the limbs we advise you seek an arborist assessment for these possible problems. As with the diseases affecting Oak, Elm, Horse Chestnut and Ash trees in recent times much work needs to be done in identifying the causes and limiting further tree

loss. The prime suspect for the spread is the unregulated trading in trees both across Europe; in recent months a greater perception is apparent in controlling nursery tree movements. As interest in trees from other global areas such as Asia continues to grow the potential for other diseases or pests entering the UK will intensify. Within your garden Scots pine trees adapt well to a range of tree surgery procedures that can shape the tree from a conical to a lower level broader form . The trees can be thinned out, reduced in size and have the lower crown lifted to improve light conditions and aesthetic form. If you have this tree in your garden you have a part of our ancient native landscape! Roger Kerr R J Tree Services WPLife

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

W ildlife everywhere is struggling because of what we are doing. It needs friends to protect it.

The question some ask, is ‘why should we care?’ There are many answers I could offer to this, ranging from ‘because we have a moral obligation to put right what we have done wrong’ to ‘because the world would be less beautiful without wild creatures in it’ and some people would still not be willing to engage with the issue, feeling that other things were more important. But for me it is about oneness, connection, a sense that we impact on everyone and everything, whatever we do. The ‘butterfly’s wing’ idea; the ripple that spreads out and you never know where it may end up. This can be true, whether it is something negative, like destroying a habitat or positive like saving a stretch of woodland. A species we push to the edge of extinction may play a vital role in an ecosystem and its disappearance could have effects that we don’t feel for decades, and by that time, it is too late. We will, by then, have lost much more than a single small insect or plant. It might mean the disappearance of a food crop or a medicine or aided the

rise of a disease somewhere, all of which will come back to us all in due course. DEFRA Chief Scientist, Bob Watson, says that the National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA) suggests that a more integrated approach to ecosystem management in the future is essential. It will take a mix of regulations, financial investment and education, and the involvement of voluntary bodies (like the Wildlife Trusts), the private sector and society at large. We are ‘society at large’ and we must get involved. From the decisions we make about how to use our garden space to what we choose to buy and where we go on holiday and how we spend our leisure time, we affect the wider environment, for good or ill. The most important decision for us is ‘what sort of impact do I wish my family to have?’ Stephen Hilborne, Executive of the Wildlife Trusts, wrote in the Winter of 2011: “To love and protect nature is also to safeguard the raw materials for life - food, water and air ........flood defence, climate control and a host of other benefits.”

New Members always welcome just pop in and see us at the club

It can seem a daunting task. It can make you wonder, often, whether the little that you do could possibly make any difference in the long run. I often think of 2 quotes, when I am discouraged by news of yet another environmental disaster somewhere in the world. “All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing” and “Never doubt that a small number of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has”. (My apologies to the originators of these wonderful encouraging insights; I have most likely slightly misquoted them and I cannot remember their names). May 2013 be a year when many more people join the struggle for nature. There are 47 Wildlife Trusts. Why not join one? Visit wildlifetrusts.org or ring 01636 677711. Spring is around the corner, time to think about nesting birds. Please don’t chop trees and hedges in the nesting season and do provide mealworms on your bird table - these are invaluable when the vaguaries of the weather make finding insect food for nestlings very difficult. And at the pond in Shadbolt Park we await the arrival of the frogs. Please visit us there any Wednesday or Saturday between 10.30 and 11.30. WPLife

Saturday 9th Feb 1pm to 2.30pm We meet William Wilberforce, leader of the movement to abolish the trade in slaves –a struggle which took most of his life time to complete. Slavery did not end in most of the British Empire until 1833. He will tell of the Atlantic triangle of trade that fed the buying and selling of people. Goods such as guns and other factory made goods were shipped from Europe to Africa. These were traded for slaves mostly from Central and West Africa. These people were packed into ships for up to two months and one out of every six would die on their way to the Americas and the West Indies. On arrival they would be traded for cotton, sugar, and tobacco which other slaves had been forced to produce. He tells of the vast amounts of money made from this trade which claimed 12 million people over 500 years. Discover what it meant to be packed on to one of these ships and how it feels to be shackled. Learn of Wilberforce’s campaign against this trade and what life was like for a slave in England.

Rose Production The Vortex - Noël Coward’s tale of sexual vanity and drug abuse among the upper classes is directed by the Rose’s Artistic Director Stephen Unwin. What do you do if your mother’s lovers are the same age as you? Noël Coward’s follow-up to Hay Fever was described as ‘un peu shocking’ and was his first great success. The relationship between the decadent young Nicky Lancaster and his highly-sexed mother scandalised its original audiences and still packs a punch. Thu 7 Feb – Sat 9 Mar £8. to £40 Rose Plus Choir - Return to the rose for a single day to learn, rehearse and perform a valentine special. Either join the choir to sing a programme of romantic classics in the Rose auditorium, or join the audience for a performance you’ll never forget. Whether a practised chorister or a secret shower-time singer, this is an exhilarating experience for all. Sun 17 Feb 7.30pm £5 The Comedy Store - There’s nothing like the buzz of live comedy. As the original home of stand up comedy in the UK, The Comedy Store bring the best and brightest comedians from Leicester Square to your doorstep. A Passion for Potatoes by Pippa Greenwood Fpotatoes ebruary is the time of year to think about perfect and smashing spuds. Home grown potatoes are an incredibly good value crop and you’ll soon find that the so-called humble spud is actually a very tasty and extremely versatile vegetable. If you don’t have much space, use a 45cm (18in) diameter pot with a single tuber. Make sure the container is well supplied with drainage holes, fill it two thirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further couple of inches of compost. As foliage appears, add more compost to cover it over and repeat until no more can be added, then keep the container well watered. Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are allowed to produce small but sturdy sprouts before planting. Stand the tubers widest end uppermost in a seed tray or old egg carton and place these in a cool but frost free spot with plenty of natural light. After a few weeks the sprouts will be about 1cm tall, perfect for planting. What to Grow: Steamed potatoes are delicious, especially if cooked the day you lift them. Try Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell Blue and

Lady Christl for some of the tastiest steamers. New potatoes dripping in chives and butter are wonderful. Try Lady Christl, Charlotte, Juliette, Casa Blanca, Nadine and Nicola. If you adore mashed potato then try Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour and King Edward. If you love your potatoes in their jackets, then try Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree and Valor. For great roast potatoes try Kestrel, Maris Piper, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi and Edzel Blue. For the best chips, use Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster and Edzel Blue. Potatoes are divided into ‘earlies’ (first to be harvested) and ‘main crop’, generally larger tubers, harvested later. Try ‘earlies’ if your soil hasn’t been cultivated for several

years. ‘Earlies’ are in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wire-worm attack. ‘Earlies’ are also useful in smaller gardens as they takes less space and are in the ground for a shorter period, giving you the opportunity to grow another fast-maturing crop after the potatoes have been lifted. No crop is without its share of problems and the fungus responsible for potato blight is sometimes hard to beat, especially in warm, damp years. Generally, ‘earlies’ suffer less with blight and you can select varieties which show resistance to the infection such as Valor, Lady Balfour, Coleen and especially Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona. Slugs are also a real menace, tunnelling into the tubers’ flesh and sometimes even hollowing them out completely. The biological control nematode Nemaslug works under the soil surface, has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife. Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Visit www. pippagreenwood.com, sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ and choose from a fantastic selection. Pippa sends them to you at just the right time for planting AND each week you receive an email with advice on ensuring great results; from just £29 for up to 66 garden-ready plants and the advice. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter, receive a free e-book on organic gardening, buy Nemaslug and other biological controls and a hand-picked selection of garden products from her website. Safer Neighbourhoods Personal Theft by PCSO Gary Weaving A fter recent incidents of dipping in Worcester Park & North Cheam, I thought it advisable to

include a few tips on keeping your personal possessions safe whilst out and about. First and foremost, Be aware of what and who is around you and keep your possessions safe - Never leave your bags or other valuables unattended in public places. - Be discreet with your belongings; displaying expensive jewellery or electronic devices, like mobile phones or cameras, could attract unwanted attention. - If people talk to you or ask unusual questions be aware of where your possessions are. In this area thieves tend to operate in busy stores including charity shops, they may operate on the street, even on the bus. Cash points are also often a target, in fact anywhere where your attention may be drawn elsewhere. Recently, the thieves have been working in pairs, even working in what seem like a family unit, employing clever distraction tactics. Ladies, if you wear your handbag over your shoulder, you could try wearing it under your coat and/or to the front of your body, making sure that the zip or fastener is always closed. Never leave your bag in or hanging from a shopping trolley. Another good idea is getting some small round ‘Cat Bell’s’ from the pet shop and attach them to the zips of your bags, then should someone try to interfere with your belongings you will be alerted by the jangle of the bell. Always be alert when using a cash point, again,

make sure your bag is in front of you, closed and attached to your person. Be aware of those around you and of course always shield your transaction from prying eyes. If you are taking refreshment in a café or restaurant, never leave your bag on the floor or under your chair. Keep it close to you where you can see it. Try and keep the cash you carry to a minimum, use your cards for as many of your transactions as possible. The majority of these thieves want cash, they will watch you withdraw it and pick their moment later to take it. Stolen cards can be stopped and replaced. A large amount of cash is lost. All of the above tips will not guarantee the safety of all your possessions, but it WILL make you and your personal belongings a far more difficult and unattractive target. Take care of yourselves and watch out for your fellow shoppers. Thank you. WPLife
