Welcome to

our March edition

DTheearweather All, has been so unpredictable that, at the

time of writing, it’s pretty difficult to guess what’ll be happening out there when you’re reading this. Could be snow (look right) or spring may indeed have sprung. Despite the snow and occasional rain (remember, I’m from Glasgow where it rain aLOT more!) I’ve been loving the weather so far this year. On 9th January I joined a weekly beginners running course (thanks to Bob at the Sheen Shufflers) and in conjunction with this am also following the Couch to 5K programme – which takes people like me who haven’t run since they were made to at school, and very gradually builds up strength and stamina, aiming to complete a run 5k in 8 weeks. Yikes!! Yesterday I managed to run for 2 lots of 10 minutes without collapsing and with only myself geeing me on. Watch this space - and try to be kind if you see me pounding/panting along…. Huge thanks to my running buddies Heidi and Archie for not letting me give up before i even started! Anyway, it has been such an absolute pleasure getting to know some of our fine parks better – Richmond, Bushy and Nonsuch – and enjoy the privilege in fine sunny winter weather. Joy! Remember, although we publish the magazine monthly, we deliver to most homes every 2nd month so that we can cover a larger area. So if you received this edition through the door you aren’t likely to get

Worcester Park History 75 years of trains to Malden Manor This month we are again looking at the Manor

Drive area, this time continuing along Manor Drive North and right to the edge of the KT4 area to look at Malden Manor station – in advance of the 75th anniversary in May of the opening of this station in 1938, as part of the first section of the branch line from Motspur Park to Chessington. The northwestern boundary of Worcester Park postal district follows the route of this line from the railway junction almost as far as Tolworth Station. As early as 1929, the Southern Railway’s General Manager, Sir Herbert Walker, had noted the potential value of an additional line between the existing Surbiton and Epsom services, to serve the rapidlyincreasing populations in the Malden Manor, Tolworth and Chessington areas. Parliamentary approval was obtained in 1930 for a branch leaving the existing line between Motspur Park and Worcester Park, running across the Hogsmill Valley to Chessington, and continuing through Malden Rushett to rejoin the existing line on the northern outskirts of Leatherhead; the project’s expected contribution to the relief of

unemployment won it a quick passage through Parliament. The value of the proposed line became increasingly apparent as overcrowding grew on services through Worcester Park: there was a tenfold increase in the numbers of season tickets issued at Worcester Park and Motspur Park between 1927 and 1937. However, difficulties in purchasing the land required, much of which had been divided into small parcels, delayed the scheme. In 1934 the General Manager produced an estimate of just under £440,000 for the first section of the line, as far as Chessington South, and four stations. Work began early in 1936: the need to cope with the corrosive and unstable clay of the Hogsmill basin, and to provide embankments, cuttings, eight bridges and a 140-foot viaduct through the nearby Hogsmill open space, made it a complex undertaking. Concrete was to be the defining feature of the line, in both the viaduct and bridges, whose girders were encased in concrete and supported on concrete piers, and in the station buildings. All four stations were designed in Modern style, drawing on contemporary Underground stations and marine architecture. The

platforms were provided with ‘Chisarc’ cantilevered concrete canopies, illuminated with fluorescent tubes of four different colours. The service through Malden Manor as far as Tolworth began on 29 May 1938, and was extended to Chessington South on 28 May 1939. Although the latter was designed as a through station, and the embankment for the projected extension of the line was built by the Royal Engineers as a training exercise in 1941-2 to within a quarter of a mile of the next intended station, Chessington South remains the terminus of the line. The Southern Railway originally provided three trains an hour, reduced to two in 1958. Adjoining the station is The Manor public house, built in 1938-9 as The Malden Manor, and to the left is the parade of shops at nos. 107-129 in Manor Drive North. By 1940 there were at least eight shops taken. Nos. 107-111 comprised, respectively, a greengrocer, chemist and hairdresser. Mrs G A Powell

had a newsagent’s at 115 and a grocer’s at 119, separated by L E Gibson’s butcher’s shop. ‘Powell’s’ advertised in 1940 that the shop was ‘noted for finest quality hams, bacon and cheese’ and was an agent for Lyons’ tea, coffee and cakes. All these shops continued in the same lines of business until at least the mid-1960s. In the February 1940 parish magazine the Malden Manor Library and Wool Shop was advertised as ‘just open’ at no. 113, offering a 2d library and a large selection of art and craft materials. By 1948 this had become Peers & Rowlands, drapers (which in the 1960s was called Peerlands and included a Post Office). Miss G A Trenchard had a baker’s at 123 in 1940, while Charles Trenchard was doing boot repairs at 123A. By 1948 the remaining shops were in use, as a fishmonger’s (121), a café (125) and Manorware Ltd’s ironmongery and radio shops (127 and 129). Today’s residents can still buy their newspapers at 115 and their groceries at 119; other businesses in the parade

This, courtesy of Chris Pilcher, shows the first train at Malden Manor station – and a young Chris. On page 12 is an early 20th-century view, and I think the photographer must have been standing close to the location of the Malden Manor roundabout, where there was a double bend in the lane known as Sheephouse Lane, looking across the land where the railway was to be built, and the field known as Western Furlong where Percy Gardens is now situated, to St John’s Church and Manor Farm Cottages. Service for Passiontide On another theme, readers may be interested to know that on Sunday 24 March (Palm Sunday) the choir of St Mary’s Church, Cuddington, will be joined by the choir of St Matthew’s, Surbiton for a service for Passiontide in St Mary’s, at the top of The Avenue, featuring J S Bach’s St Luke Passion. The service begins at 6.30pm; it is free and all are welcome. For more information about St Mary’s, contact the Parish Office on (020) 8337 4026. Ruth Jemmett Writes The hand that rocks the cradle A s we celebrate mother’s day this month, ruth jemmett shares her thoughts on the subject

The late poet William Ross Wallace told us that “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” The aforesaid gentleman lived in the eighteenth century, at a time when mothers, and women in general, had little say in the way societies functioned. For millennia women’s ability to give birth was often feared by men, frequently, belittled and often viewed as a sort of DISability. In Victorian times women were encouraged to hide their ’interesting condition’. It was only after 1929 in this country, following the courageous work of the suffragette movement, that women were entitled to vote.

NewView Loft Conversions

Until that time they were officially legally classified alongside children and ‘lunatics’. Happily times have moved on in in our country, but we should never lose sight of the fact that there are still, unbelievably, in the twenty-first century, places where women still don’t have the right to have any sort of control over their lives. Unfortunately, even though women represent approximately half of the world’s population, and most of us become mothers, we certainly have a long way to go before we ‘rule the world’. Even in our own parliament, only one in five M.P.s are female - mainly due to the outdated hours for parliamentary sessions, which quite simply don’t fit into the lives of most mothers. As one in five families are now headed by women, our under-representation in the bigger world seems increasingly ridiculous. Nature decreed that females have wombs AND brains, and most of us fight a lifelong battle, trying to juggle our biological and intellectual urges. The guilt trip is written into our D.N.A. When we are not apologising for not being perfect mothers we are apologising for Visit our Checkatrade listing to see independent reviews of our business.

not going out to work! Most modern mothers have to multitask, and tend to juggle more balls than The Moscow State Circus! Despite so-called Women’s Lib in our own particular society, most of the really important jobs, from government downwards, are simply not geared to the fact that if you are a mother you also have to pick children up from school, sometimes have to breastfeed, and often are the prime carer in the family. Despite the best efforts of our bra-burning sisters, most of the heavy-duty childcare in the world is still done by women. In Africa it is reckoned that the women there do two-thirds of the work in addition to childbearing. The old chestnut about “Women in Africa can give birth in the fields and are back at work a few hours later with their babies strapped to their backs” is wishful thinking and not reality. In Africa, and the Indian sub-continent, unattended births are the main reason that one in three of either mothers and babies die. Without our modern hospitals women here would suffer the same fate. Even in our own ‘civilized’ country, one in forty women died in childbirth at the beginning of the 1900s. Of course motherhood isn’t all gloom and doom. At its best it is the most wonderful, fulfilling thing a female can ever do. Nothings - absolutely nothing - compares to the moment you hold your child for the

first time. It is a noble and self-sacrificing calling - but it is still the hardest and most undervalued job in the world. No doubt Wallace’s inspiration for his oft quoted words come from the fact that his father died when he was young, leaving his mother to influence him greatly. With her encouragement he eventually became a successful lawyer and a poet of note. Mothers come in all shapes and sizes - some better than others. Wallace was one of the lucky ones. We cannot pretend that each woman who brings a new life into the world is a natural nurturer. As it is estimated that two-thirds of all pregnancies are not planned, it is indeed a happy accident that most mothers do the job well, and most would die for their children. Even if ‘the hand that rocks the cradle’ still doesn’t have a big say in most of the important issues that rule her life and those of her family, it is true to say that a mother is usually the one who has the most influence over the way her offspring develop during their early years. The standards that we set for our children when they are young will hopefully hold them in good stead for what they will have to deal with in their future lives. Soon enough they will be tempted to stray off the path you have set them once they are in the educational system. When they begin to attend school you will hear nothing but “But WHY can’t I have

night party? ALL my friends are going!”. From the moment you hold that gurgling new bundle in your arms you will soon realise that a mother’s place is in the wrong. When a child is born well-meaning advice bombards down on you from all sides, and one’s bookshelves are soon creaking with weighty tomes telling you how to raise little Jack or Jill. I found that the best thing to do was to smile sweetly, agree with everyone, and then follow common-sense instincts. We have kept the human race going for thousands of years. No doubt there were do-gooders telling cavewomen that they mustn’t start their babies on dinosaur stew too early! As I say, motherhood can be wonderful - but remember that although you are awash with cuddly hormones, the rest of the world isn’t always with you in spirit. We have all had that conversation at a party: “And what do YOU do for a living?”. “I’m a stay-at-home mother”. Exit left one pair of glazed eyes topping a body that races away towards the canapés….. “I’m going back to work as soon as they start school!” you shriek after them. But it’s too late. You have become a non-person - even though a year ago you were running a giant corporation. Unfortunately the only large corporation you now have is the one jutting out beneath your ribs. You shuffle away and weep into your glass of wine. In your own eyes and those of your family you are a heroine - a Mother Earth - but to many people in the work world, Stationery

you are now ‘enjoying’ Maternity Leave” and they complain that “we have to take up the slack she has left” and they have no doubt that YOU are sprawled out on a chaise longue all day sipping wine and munching grapes. For you a small miracle has taken place, but to people NOT in your position, your ability to breed is as boring a situation for them as attending a seminar on “The Secret Life Of The Dung Beetle”. Sadly, for a variety of reasons, many women who would love to become mothers are unable to do so. An amazing one in four of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, and despite the fact that the event is so common, many people try to pretend that this everyday tragedy hasn’t happened at all. Whereas stillbirths are afforded respect and funerals, mothers who lose babies pre-term, often have to grieve in a lonely way. Male partners often don’t know how to react, and often find it hard to empathise with such a thing. Our education system certainly doesn’t prepare us for such events. Whether or not a truly ’happy event’ takes place, mothers have to take on board that some fathers feel rather excluded by the whole pregnancy and birth scenario. The highest number of divorces occur during the two year period after a baby’s birth. In most cases, thank goodness, creating a new family has to be one of the most happy and positive things human beings can do. I recently attended a christening, and the aura of joy that one little baby girl exuded to

fifty people around her was palpable. A new life, for all the stress and worry its arrival brings, fills us with hope for the future. As we gaze upon that perfect complexion and toy with those cute little hands and toes, it is hard not to get caught up in the magic of it all. As I watched little Evie’s family take her to their hearts, and rejoice in her arrival, I felt uplifted with them. There is no such thing as a perfect mother. Most of us learnt as we went along, hoping that our little dears didn’t suss out that they were part of a grand experiment! For the most part children survive, despite eating mud and worms - and despite their mothers nagging them about not picking up their dirty clothes, staying out too late, or tutting about their decision to marry COMPLETELY the wrong person! This coming Mother’s Day on 10th March try and make time to appreciate the person who brought you into the world, whether she lives in Worcester Park or moved to Australia to avoid that partner you insisted on marrying. Make her feel that the stretch marks and worry-lines you gave her were all worthwhile. Whether she was a wonderful role-model, or someone for whom being a parent didn’t come naturally, remember that she is the only mother you have got. Face it - life wouldn’t be the same if you never again heard her voice saying “You’re never going out wearing THAT are you?!” Ruth Jemmett is a Member of The Society of Authors opyright 10.2.13 WPLife

Clubs

New Malden Jazz Club W ho said Traditional Jazz is dead? It most certainly is not in New Malden

- or perhaps more accurately in Old Malden, where the New Malden Jazz Club holds its weekly meetings at The Manor, which is next to Malden Manor station. The club has been in existence for many years, starting life in the Railway Tavern (now The Glasshouse), moving to the Brewster (now The Willow Tree), and thence to The Berrylands Hotel in Surbiton before moving to its current home, where it has been comfortably established for several years. The regular band is the Magna Jazz Band, which has had a long and varied career since its formation in the middle 1950s by clarinettist Brian White. The band is

hugely experienced and has featured countless American musicians as guest stars during the lifetime of the club, and its members are known all over the world, thanks to personal visits and the many recordings they have made. They enjoy themselves so much that they would almost play for nothing, but of course they do incur expenses and so there is an admission charge. You will find that drinks are at normal pub prices. There is a warm atmosphere at The Manor, and the club members are always happy to welcome new friends into the family. The sessions are every Thursday, with the band kicking off the music at 8.30. Why not go along and enjoy? Brian White, leaderWPLife

On the grapevine Aret kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin

Texciting his is probably the most time of the year for

mentioning its cloudy appearance or perceived lack of character or expression. Love it or hate it, I think it’s important not to tar all ‘natural’ wines with the same brush and I hope that more people will at least give them a go. One of the issues that often arises is the lack of accreditation which causes people to doubt these wine makers authenticity. With no accreditation, anyone can call himself or herself a natural wine maker and it is very difficult to say who is and who isn’t without constant supervision of both vineyard and winery practices. Whatever the controversy surrounding it, interest in natural wine is gathering momentum in London and with the RAW Artisan Wine Fair taking place this year at The Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane on the 19th and 20th of May 2013, you can try some of the best examples of these wines and make up your own minds! RAW are championing a complete transparency in wine making and labeling, after all we are now adamant that we should know what goes in to what we eat, so why not what we drink as well? WPLife

the wine trade, the season where wine companies from all over the world get ready to flex their proverbial muscles and show the industry what they’ve got! I realize that these portfolio tastings are essentially all the same year in and year out, but I definitely haven’t reached the stage where I’m bored of the buzz just yet. From golden oldies to new kids on the block it never ceases to amaze me just how vast the wine world is and how impossible it would be to even come close to knowing everything, and that’s what makes it so endlessly fascinating. Each year there’s something that grabs my attention and makes me want to know more and this season it’s the discussion surrounding ‘natural’ wine. The word itself is confusing and really alludes to a philosophy of completely natural processes in the vineyard and the winery, an unusual thing in the modern industrialized market. Making wine of course began as a natural process when it first started being produced some 8000 years ago without the aid of packets of yeast, vitamins or reverse osmosis which are just a few of the additives used around the world today. There is a growing desire amongst a select few to return wine to what it was, simply crushed grapes…fermented! Interest in natural wine is by no means a new thing and it comes as no surprise that the majority of those that are championing a return to the old ways are themselves of the old World wine hubs of France and Italy. Known well for their traditionalism in most areas, these are of course nations where the ‘natural’ style of winemaking emerged long before the advance of technology and there are a reported 400 natural wine producers in France alone. It also stands to reason that this movement is gathering less speed in New World wine making circles when you consider that these popular wine regions owe much of their success to the boom in technology which offered temperature-controlled fermentation and vast steel tanks resulting in the bold fruit-driven wines that the modern market loves so well. The burning question has to be, what are these ‘natural’ wines actually like? Well this is where it becomes complicated. There are many reports from consumers who claim to have ‘rediscovered’ wine after going natural because it reportedly offers none of the side affects associated with manufactured, over processed wines with high levels of sulphites and other nasties. On the other hand the more overwhelming majority seem to see ‘natural’ as an excuse for poor wine making often To advertise email jenny@wplife.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

The Better Life The Zen of Chickens

B e in the moment. Chickens seem to have a very short attention span,

unless they’re on the trail of a worm. However, they’re actually demonstrating an ability to detach from the superficial, which – to a chicken – is anything inedible. Be curious about the world. Chickens are life’s little explorers. They can find that hole in the fence which I blocked with some feeble bamboo canes and never got round to repairing properly, the last wild strawberry, or a snail who thought hiding behind the coop was a foolproof survival strategy. Celebrate your successes. The commotion a chicken makes before, while and after laying an egg is surely one of Nature’s cruellest jokes. Short of ringing a dinner bell, it’s the most efficient way of summoning any fox within a two-mile radius. Despite that, I defy any smallholder not to be impressed at the ‘scraps, grain and grit in, followed by egg and fertiliser poop out’ magic trick performed most days. Be how you feel. Our cat learned early on that it’s wise

to keep out of the path of a broody, moody hen. She also discovered they can run surprisingly fast and launch themselves at unwitting felines. Me? I learned that the term ‘an affectionate peck’ doesn’t apply to poultry. Make time to relax. When they’re not eating, advertising their egg-laying prowess, playing tug-of-war with snails or enjoying dirt baths, chickens like nothing better than sitting still and watching the world go by. Or, if it’s a sunny day, a spot of Chicken Yoga might be in order. You can forget about downward dog, cat posture or doing the cobra. For chickens, the yogic routine is a few luxurious wing stretches, some flexing of the neck and then it’s time to sprawl out in the warm. And if it’s cold outside? They snuggle up together in what I call the ‘tea cosies’ posture. Eat your greens – and give peas a chance. Impressionable children the world over would have no qualms about devouring chard, lettuce or spinach (to name but three) if they had a chicken for a role model. And, being life’s gourmet connoisseurs, chickens will also happily try tomatoes, grapes, porridge, roast potatoes, bananas, raisins and spaghetti. Although someone we once met, who declared that she fed her hens leftover bacon and eggs did, I feel, overstep the mark a little. The early bird really does get the worm. Although the slightly delayed bird may succeed in taking it off you, if you don’t pay attention. Opportunity not only knocks, it grabs too. Care for your environment. Once again, chickens lead by example. Whether it’s pulling up the weeds*, providing some essential pest control or aerating the soil, chickens are constantly on the lookout for ways to contribute. * A word of caution - an unchecked chicken gets a little over enthusiastic in its garden duties! Play to your strengths. Chickens don’t fly or glide and their singing isn’t up to much. But...they don’t waste food, or an opportunity, and they make eggcellent companions. By Derek Thompsonpepper. View from the City The Lost Decade?

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

We will in all likelihood

look back and see this period as the “lost decade” for the UK, although I suspect we will not be alone. After all we had ten years of boom and thus, as is usual with such cycles, we shall have ten years of lean (as in meat – horse or otherwise). There are shades of the Old Testament about it, but hopefully we won’t have Moses turning up soon (mind you he probably wouldn’t qualify under the immigration rules anyway, unless it turns out that he was in fact Romanian). However the term “lost decade” is somewhat pejorative, as it would seem to imply that little or nothing will occur and that is certainly not the case.

26

In fact there is a lot going on but it just rarely seems to feel like it. We are fed GDP figures which seem to become less credible with every quarter and have political leaders who don’t engender confidence or exude capability and credibility. The result is that we spend less, companies invest less, and there seems to be a national attitude of tired resignation, reflected and often underscored by a media happy to wallow in torrid tales or economic torpor. Oh dear, what a state we are in. Actually I think this is twaddle. There is in fact a great deal of effort and resource being applied but little that seems to break into the national awareness. We have seen a rise in savings and are also seeing corporate cash positions looking healthier. However of course neither are getting any real returns on the cash pool as real interest rates for any savings are negative. So here is an untapped reservoir of money waiting to be tapped but wholly dependent on the key word to release their investment - which of course is confidence. Now it may just be that we are starting to see a change. Some companies are now finding these chests of guilders somewhat of an embarrassment. You will

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

recall Apple’s rejection of the lawsuit from the hedge fund manager David Einhorn, in which he was trying to force the company to handover to its shareholders (or owners!) some of the $137bn of cash. He accused the company of a “depression era mentality” - which of course was another “lost decade”. There are many public companies sitting with large cash surpluses and the estimate for listed UK companies stands currently at around £800bn - that’s more than the UK government’s total annual expenditure. Then there are the savings of the much put upon middle class. With low deposit interest rates, chaffing inflation and, for many, lower real value pay levels, it’s not surprising that few are confident. For those with savings the period has been awful, unless they were willing to accept higher risks of other investments. However would they? The answer I find is yes, but only if they were given the fortitude to do so - and this comes from the leadership. With the Budget coming up next month, there is an opportunity for the Chancellor to provide such leadership and inspiration. However to date I have not been impressed as the previous speeches seem to have been aimed at the opposite benches rather than the spending populous. Political pomposity should be replaced by practical purpose. WPLife

Transfer to a shallow roasting tin and arrange the rest of the lemon slices around the chicken. Mix together 1 tbsp of the lemon juice with the honey and pour over the chicken. Roast for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. Meanwhile, place the bulgar wheat into a bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Leave for 30 minutes until grains are soft. Stir well and drain off any excess water. Stir in the rest of the olive oil and lemon juice and season with plenty of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cucumber, spring onions, mint and coriander and mix well. Serve the hot roast chicken on the tabbouleh with any juices from the roasting tin poured over. Tip: Bulgar wheat is a type of wheat grain that has been parboiled, dried then finely crushed. It is similar to couscous but has more texture and bite. You’ll find it in most large supermarkets or health food shops. WPLife

Cheam Woodturners Association

Cheam Woodturners Association was formed

in 1997. Meetings are held at 7.30 PM on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the Elmcroft Centre, London Road, North Cheam, which is next to the Sainsbury Supermarket. The club is dedicated to promoting the art of woodturning and encouraging anyone interested to take part. The club is associated to the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain. Tree care Bogus Tree Surgeons

In neighbouring areas there has been a spate of illegal “tree surgeons” accessing customers by cold calling on your doorstep or via mass leafleting. This article may help you in ensuring that the arborists you employ are legal, safe and proficient for the task in hand. A simple checklist is advised so you can screen the possible illegal operators:1. All tree surgeons must have licenses that are less than 5 years old. The main authority to train and issue the licenses are NPTC and LANTRA, for ground treeworks you must see CS30 and 31 licenses. Most treeworks require some climbing so higher level CS38 and 39 licenses are needed. If these cannot be shown to you then it is likely that

the operator is not insured or skilled to do any treeworks. I liken this to you employing a gas fitter at your home with no Gas Safe registration. At R J Tree Services we employ graduates that have a formal arboricultural qualification such as an Advanced Diploma in addition to these licenses. 2. Insurance cover for both public and employers liability must be presented to you. This covers you for any damage or injury that could occur on your land during the procedure. We have seen several instances of trees felled across fences etc where the “tree surgeon” could not climb the tree so took the risk of a straight fell rather than dismantle a tree in pieces. 3. A reputable company should be able to correctly identify your tree species and the appropriate time of the year for surgery, quite often we split works through the year in a garden so it maximises the health and vitality of a tree following surgery. A well informed website can confirm just how knowledgeable the advice given to you really is. 4. For surgery to trees the range of options should be explained to you with the benefits of each described clearly. This can range from crown lifts, crown thins, pollarding to crown reductions given

in percentage blocks of usually 10% . I dislike the term “lopping” which can often mean cutting off the top to a tree leaving no shape to the remaining crown!!! 5. Never accept a doorstep quote to be done the same day, this type of pressure selling is a form of bullying. The consequences of treeworks can last years so you need time to consider options and seek additional advice. 6. Never pay a deposit in advance of works or a part payment during works. Upon completion of the job a proper invoice should be presented to you. 7. Check that the workers on the day are properly equipped with the correct safety gear. This should include chainsaw trousers and boots, a helmet with ear muffs and a visor; if anyone appears in jeans and a ladder to access your tree the warning light should be on! Some recent scams in Berrylands have included a bogus tree surgeon taking the top out of a leylandii conifer and throwing the branches into a neighbours garden then collecting a cash payment before the angry neighbour turned up on the doorstep! A second example with a pensioner involved demands for extra cash payments after the job had been started because of “unforeseen circumstances”. My basic advise is for you to take your time in deciding works don’t be pressured on the doorstep by people you cannot verify can do the job, try to follow a recommendation and check all the licenses and insurance.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

Twoods here’s something about trees. A walk in the feels special. Magic even.

Once, people made sacred places in forests - groves of trees that were the centres of rituals. Some indigenous tribes still live this way, in remote places where the march of ‘progress’ has not come and cleared away the forest and driven or moved the people off their ancestral lands. Most of us realise that forests are disappearing fast, and, with them, many wild plants and animals. I’d like more of us to care and get involved in doing something about it. In the UK, many of our native woodland species are in serious decline from habitat loss and fragmentation (isolated pockets of woodland too small to support much biodiversity). The dormouse is one of these. It needs native woodland with a dense and varied undergrowth, although it can manage quite well in scrub and hedgerow (both of which are also vanishing

fast). So often people simply grub up ‘wasteland’ and clear away trees and hedges without a thought for the impact on local biodiversity. This also applies to the way we manage our gardens, parks, school and church grounds. The Woodland Trust has a scheme called MOREwoods which is aimed at helping dormice, in particular, but it will have far reaching benefits for other species, including ourselves. The idea is to create new woodland and link up fragments with corridors that wildlife can use to move from one small copse to another, linking in, finally, to a much larger area. Email morewoods@woodlandtrust.org.uk for more details or ring 0845 293 5689. Tree cover may help prevent serious flooding, and improve water qualiity by increasing the roughness of the landscape, slowing the flow of water. Tree roots can strengthen river banks, and dense vegetation may protect groundwater and streams from leaching and fertilizer run off. Trees lining our streets form a kind of corridor

of woodland in urban areas. They improve air quality, absorb sound, give shade, look beautiful, provide food and cover for birds and raise house prices because they create a green and pleasant environment, a place where people are more likely to want to live. And then, there are our gardens. It is a great pity that fences have replaced hedges and shrubs, trees have been removed to make space for various structures and play equipment, and hard standing for cars has replaced grass and flowers. None of this has beauty, or value for wildlife, and the garden visitor suffering most of all, is the hedgehog. Their numbers have dropped by a massive 75% in recent years. Every garden should have at least one tree, a small shrubbery, some flowers and grass (including a patch left long), a compost heap and dead wood pile and hedgehog holes beneath every boundary fence. Seen from the air, our gardens could be a massive wildlife corridor linking habitats and improving diversity all across our towns, cities and suburbs. We would all benefit from this. Let’s start this year. For hedgehogs, dormice, sparrows and all struggling wildlife. Let’s create some woodland magic, right here where we live. WPLife

Beauty Eyebrows

Tyounger here’s a quick, simple and easy way to look years and all you’ll need is a pair of tweezers. Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and by creating the right shape you can instantly lift your face, draw attention to your eyes and look altogether more beautiful. The wrong shape, size or even colour eyebrows can have a dramatically different effect however and leave you looking permanently surprised, confused or angry so it’s very important to think before you pluck. Work With What You Have The key is to work with your natural brow shape - whatever that may be. Some people are lucky enough to have brows that naturally sweep up to an arch, whereas others are born with much straighter eyebrows and need to do a little more work to create the desired look. Trimming You might not think it, but eyebrow hair is often quite long. A little trimming is essential for allowing the hair to lie nicely and fall into shape easily. Remove any hair that grows beyond your upper brow

54

line - do this by brushing your eyebrows up - with a brow brush - and snipping off the long ends. Next, brush the hair downwards in the opposite direction and cut the hairs that extend past the lower brow line. To finish, brush the hair into place. Your eyebrows should already be looking much better. Time To Tweeze Tweezing can be a little painful at first, so it’s a good idea to open up your pores before you start by holding a warm facecloth over your brows. Ensure that you’re working in good natural light and determine where to begin. It’s good to start by holding a pencil vertically against the side of your nose and observe where it meets the brow - this gives a guide to where your eyebrows should begin.

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

Pluck any hair away that grows before this point. Take a few hairs at a time and do the same on your other brow. Looking straight ahead, hold the pencil against your nostril and move it diagonally across the outer half of the iris of your eye - the point at which the pencil is lying is where the arch of your brow should peak. To create the best shape for your brow, gradually tweeze a line that tapers when you reach the peak of your arch. Concentrate on keeping them looking even. To finish, place your pencil back against your nostril and this time extend it diagonally to the outer corner of your eye. This is where your brow should be at its thinnest. Pluck from the arch to this point, tapering the line gradually, so that it is at its thinnest at the far corner. Remember that the fuller your brows are, the more youthful you’ll look so work slowly and steadily, tweezing one hair at a time. Stand back from the mirror regularly to check how the shape is progressing. Define Your New Shape You can enhance your new shape by applying a little colour to make your eyebrows really stand out. If your hair is fair, choose either a brow powder or pencil that’s a shade lighter than your hair colour. For dark hair, choose one that’s a shade darker. Gently sweep the product over the brow hair and set using a clear eyebrow gel.. By Helen Taylor WPLife

Seed Sowing on the Cheap by Pippa Greenwood Iperfume f you want your garden full of colour, interest, and perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive? Start with a little self-restraint. It’s all too easy to buy enough seed to fill a tennis court when you have an average-sized garden. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself. Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. This will not only save you money, but will also maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay. Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise flower time of annual flowers and cropping time for vegetables and herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for germination on one occasion, all is not lost. You may not need to buy what you want. Collect seed from your garden or from gardens of friends and neighbours, making sure that the plants are healthy and that they’re ready and ripe or they won’t germinate. Seeds labelled as ‘F1’ will produce flowers whose seeds will not ‘come true’, meaning that the offspring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. Try to harvest the seed when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris and allow them to dry off naturally, not becoming too warm or cold. If you can’t sow the seeds immediately, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place. A small heated or even un-heated propagator can help you reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. Choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UKmade Stewart propagators at www.pippagreenwood. com. Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Wider spacing makes for less thinning out but if you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if looked after properly. Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. Indeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil.

56

Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings, and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be flowering later this year too. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email each week telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy Nemaslug and other garden products. WPLife

Clubs

Kingstonian FC Iseason t’s half-time in 2012/13 for

your local football team, Kingstonian, and they are still in contention for a late season challenge for promotion to the Conference South league. So what of the season to date? Results were positive for the first two months of the season with only one league defeat in the first two months of the season, a 1-0 loss at Bury Town in the depths of East Anglia. At this point Kingstonian hit the dizzy heights of the pinnacle of the Ryman Isthmian League. However, this didn’t last long as the team came down to earth with a bang, losing at closest rivals, Wealdstone, despite taking a 2-0 lead. Since this setback, results have been mixed, and one result hasn’t even been decided, as Kingstonian played an evening game at Whitehawk (Brighton) which was abandoned because of floodlight failure fifteen minutes from the end, with Kingstonian leading 2-0. Other highlights of the ‘first-half’ were a magnificent win at Lowestoft who were riding high in the league at the time, 3-1, a place that not many other teams have reaped rewards; and progression through the lesser stages of the FA Trophy, a competition that Kingstonian won twice just over ten years ago. However, as you progress in the competition, the opposition gets stronger, and a tough home draw against Dartford, a team from two leagues above Kingstonian, put paid to further Kingstonian progress. Looking forward to the second half of the season, Kingstonian will have to push on with more consistency in order to take the League Championship, or to make one of the four play-off spots. Attractive games lie ahead with the visits of Hastings United, who progressed through to the 3rd round of the FA Cup before being defeated by Middlesborough, on Monday 11th March, and with Bury Town, riding high in the table, who Kingstonian will look to avenge their first defeat earlier in the season, when they visit Kingsmeadow on 16th March. Current league-leaders Whitehawk are due at Kingsmeadow on Saturday 6th April, in what is already being described as Kingstonian’s ‘make or break’ game. All the upcoming fixtures and other information can on the Ks can be found at www.kingstonian.com.

58

So if you are free on a Saturday afternoon, or for one of Kingstonian’s evening games, get along to Kingsmeadow and get behind the team. The players have described the home crowd as their 12th man and really appreciate the support they get from the fans. In order to encourage the youngsters along, it’s ‘kids for free’ at Kingsmeadow, providing that they are under 16 and can provide proof of age. WPLife

Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving

A ‘Bike Marking Event’ was arranged by PC Luke Lazell of the Worcester Park Safer Neighbourhoods

Team and held outside Worcester Park police office in Central Road, on Saturday 26th January between 12noon and 3pm when nearly 50 cyclists attended to have their bikes marked and registered, making them less attractive to thieves as they can be easily identified. He was assisted by PCSOs Gary Weaving, Wendy Stephens and Nadine Campbell, of The Worcester Park and Nonsuch Safer Neighbourhood Teams and PC Lee Honey and PCSO Scott Thomas, of Safer Transport Command Team. “Everyone involved during this frantic, three-hour event were more than pleased by its success,” said PC Lazell. The activity is part of an ongoing London-wide operation to promote bike security involving the police, Transport for London and cycling groups. If you missed out on that event, another similar event is being held on ‘The Hamptons’ on Saturday the 6th of April from Midday till 3pm. The Hamptons is situated towards the end of Green Lane in Worcester Park. Arson suspect arrested You may remember in December last year ‘Poundland’ in Worcester Park was the victim of an arson attack whereby the front of the premises was quite badly damaged. Early in January, Worcester Park suffered another three attacks in quick succession, including the rear of W H Smith in Central Road where a storage facility was badly burned. Unfortunately for one young man, it was discovered that CCTV cameras caught him making off from Poundland at the relevant time. He visited a nearby cash machine, whereby Police found out his name by requesting information of who had used the ATM at around that time and he was arrested on suspicion of arson. He is currently on police bail whilst investigations continue. Cannabis factory Fireman Troy Webber was caught running a cannabis factory in his flat after the fire brigade were called to deal with a flood caused after a tap had been left running in his bath in May last year. The bath overflowed and the water poured through the ceiling of the KFC restaurant immediately below his flat in Central Road, Worcester Park. A fireman climbed in through a first floor window and noticed a very strong plant smell. Police were alerted and 2 officers from Worcester Park and Nonsuch teams attended and arrested Mr Webber as he arrived back at the flat. Police found 125 plants growing in tents in four

60

different rooms and the police investigation found that Webber, a serving fireman at Chelsea Fire Station and a qualified electrician with his own electrical business, had used his technical knowledge to by-pass the electricity supply to steal £1,514.71 of electricity. Webber was charged on 18th September 2012. He was sentenced to two years in prison at Croydon Crown Court on 28th January after pleading guilty to production of a controlled drug - class B, and abstracting electricity. Foiled DVD theft A swift telephone call to police from an alert shop worker in W H Smith in Central Road resulted in two young men being apprehended at Worcester Park BR Station with a bag containing £185 of stolen DVD’s. Both Worcester Park and Nonsuch Safer Neighbourhood Team officers pounced on the pair and escorted them back to the Central Road Police Office. Where the goods were recovered and returned to the store and both men were issued with £80 fines. It’s likely they will not bother returning to Worcester Park. Have a good month.
