Editor’s letter Apparently if you are full of the joys of spring, then you are very happy and full of energy. Not sure I’ve quite got the bug yet and definitely feel like I need a battery recharge after the Easter holidays. The weather just isn’t helping. If the gloomy forecasts are to be believed then there’ll be even more rain to keep our water buts topped up. An uncertain few months for gardeners – the record temperatures of March are a bit of a distant memory. I am a very inexperienced gardener who ordered a ridiculous number of plug plants online which seem to be arriving daily and I am finding it difficult to keep up with potting them and knowing which to pinch and when – a lot more complicated than I’d imagined! Let’s hope temperatures improve and that late frosts have been and gone. Do you ever wish you were more involved with community projects? This month why not grab the bull by the horns (so to speak) and contact either Nick Baum who leads a group clearing up the area outside the station and planting and maintaining plants, or Carol Williams who helped rejuvenate Shadbolt Park Pond. Remember, if you’d like to promote a local event then it’s free to submit a listing for our What’s On section. Just email me. Celebrating Jubilees in Worcester Park As we approach the main celebrations of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, I thought it would be good to look back at the ways in which earlier Jubilees have been celebrated in Worcester Park. Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887 was marked by a tea for children at Malden Parochial School held in the barn belonging to Mr J Hunter (this was perhaps John Hunter who lived near the top of Barrow Hill, and had stables at the foot of the hill, in Old Malden Lane). At St John’s, three bells were added, by public subscription. The 1897 Diamond Jubilee produced a particularly long-lasting result, in the shape of the Malden and Cuddington Jubilee Club and Institute in Malden Road, now formally known as St John’s Hall. This was the idea of the Vicar of St John’s, the Revd Thomas Birkett Dover, who wanted to provide a place of ‘amusement or recreation… for young men or old men in Malden on these dark winter nights’. It was opened in 1898, on the 61st anniversary of the Queen’s accession, and was soon providing local people with a venue for relaxation, billiards, refreshments, entertainments, meetings and classes. The next Jubilee was in 1935, when King George V celebrated 25 years on the throne. At Cheam Common Junior School there was a Jubilee tea in the hall on 19 May, when the Mayor of Sutton addressed the children and Jubilee beakers were distributed. The log books of Cheam Common Infants’ School and Malden Parochial School record that the children were given two extra days’ holiday to mark the occasion. Local organisations also arranged their own celebrations: the Stoneleigh Park and Cuddington Residents’ Association (which served the area between Central Road, the railway line and Sparrow Farm Road) arranged a party in the St Philip’s Church Hall, as illustrated in our black and white photograph (courtesy of Gwen Rawling). In Central Road, the shopfronts were festooned with a sea of bunting. The Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 was marked by a number of street parties, and I am grateful to Jeff Wallder, Arthur Warner, Ron Stempfer and the late

Dorothy West for photographs of some of them. In Longfellow Road the line of tables stretched off into the distance, whilst in Cuddington Recreation Ground the children were evidently enthusiastic about adopting suitable costumes. In Idmiston Road the residents of that road and Idmiston Square enjoyed a party with sandwiches and fairy cakes. Jeff Wallder recalls, ‘The Street Party Committee had been collecting funds for several weeks for the big day; the smaller flags and buntings were provided as part of a promotional kit by a popular childrens’ food company.’

Several roads also arranged afternoon or evening events to mark the 2002 Golden Jubilee; Longfellow Road arranged a particularly full programme 7 of events in the playground (now the Rosa Smith Playground), and these also provided an opportunity to raise funds towards its refurbishment under the leadership of the Worcester Park Action Group, formed in 2000 and renamed The Acorn Project in 2006. In Old Malden, the derelict allotments at the foot of the path from St John’s to the River Hogsmill were restored as a meadow which was named Jubilee Mead.

Be Prepared! Ruth Jemmett ponders on the merits of being ready for anything The wisdom of hindsight is a wonderful thing. It is said that the saddest words that one can say at the end of one’s life are “If only …” Despite the fact that most of us are blessed with the mental ability to plan our lives, how often do we berate ourselves for our lack of foresight? When we are young we think we will live forever. The time spent waiting for the arrival of Father Christmas can seem interminable. Equally, school summer holidays can seem endless. Making plans for the future is always somewhere ‘out there’, and we imagine that our life will somehow miraculously take care of itself. Lack of foresight permeates throughout our society, ranging from the apathy of individual behaviour to the actions of governments. The powers that be, for instance, are always incredulous at the news that, in winter, snow-covered roads need specialised vehicles to clear them, or that leaves fall on railway

tracks in the autumn, often vastly disrupting travel arrangements. Other countries seem to foresee this, and invest in trains that can deal with all weathers. Planning ahead should be plain common sense, and contingency plans set in place a long time before such ‘surprises’. Salisbury Road, here in Worcester Park, was recently rejoicing over the fact that our road has been resurfaced. Shortly afterwards we received letters informing us that extensive gas works are planned for the summer, involving digging our beautiful new road up again ….. As I say, planning ahead should be common sense ……! The simple truth is that every action results in a reaction - often in the long term. What we eat greatly affects our health. How we rear our children directly affects what sort of adults they will be. Most of the ills in our world are the result of the lack of forward planning, be it over-population, droughts (yes, water boards - I’m talking about YOU. Our present drought problem was forecast a year ago!) or as in more recent years, global financial problems. Even the

lowliest bank clerk realises that if you borrow vast sums of money without the funds to repay it in the future, you just MIGHT be in a bit of trouble! Whilst some folk are incredibly organised and forward thinking, far too many people think that if they ignore a problem it will go away. Our present “live for the moment and blow the consequences” attitude is now responsible for our country’s seemingly unstoppable drug-related problems, countless under-age mothers and the appalling fact that one in five of our children now officially live in poverty. I have to say that even many years ago some people weren’t very prepared either. I was born at the home where my parents were living, near Worcester Park, just after the last war. Apparently my arrival into the world hadn’t been sufficiently planned for, and a cot hadn’t been purchased. I spent the first few weeks of my life being stuffed into a drawer, which probably accounts for the fact that I’m not particularly fond of lifts and feel a little strange when I am near a chest of drawers I think that in a previous existence I must have been a Boy Scout, as I tend to be over-prepared for any eventuality. My list-making would put the planner of a royal wedding to shame, and my use of lined notepads must have heavily contributed to the destruction of the Amazon forests! My handbag (which I have lovingly christened Big Bertha) has to be hoisted on to my shoulder by a large crane, and its contents are legendary. Need a button sewing on? I have a needle and thread. Got a headache/backache/stomach-ache/ sore throat? Welcome to Ruth’s travelling pharmacy! Need a plaster/pen/sip of water? I’m your girl! I call my preparations for life’s little emergencies a wonder of organisation. I think others might describe my tendency to worry about everything that might go wrong just a little neurotic! Yes - they might mock at me, but if they suddenly need a small screwdriver and a pair of tweezers at short notice I bet they will hug me with gratitude for my Big Bertha! Without a doubt, the female of the species tend to see the bigger picture of life and constantly plan for things going wrong.. It’s probably built into our DNA as part

of the maternal instinct package. Show me a woman who is calm and serene about the future, and I will show you someone who is childless and whose finger isn’t almost permanently hovering to dial the Accident and Emergency Department of the nearest hospital! Out tendency to be on a constant adrenalin high also accounts for the fact that it is usually the women in our world who have already started planning their gift list for next Christmas, and who have stockpiles of food to cater for guests who just MIGHT call by during the weeks of The Olympic Games. Planning for the future generally doesn’t fit in with men’s need to live NOW. This is why the phrase ‘Teenage single Dad of two’ doesn’t loom large in our world! Of course there will always be events over which we will have no control. If aliens decide to land in my vicinity in the near future, there won’t be much I can do about it, but after welcoming them to Worcester Park I could always delve into Big Bertha, and offer them a headscarf and gloves to keep them warm. I could also provide them with a pair of glasses to view our planet with, and if they are hungry I can give them a peppermint. As I said, I’m prepared for ANYTHING! Volunteers clean up Worcester Park Station The Worcester Park station volunteers have started up their activities once again at Worcester Park station. On Sunday the 25th the volunteers, led by Nick Baum were joined by local Conservative community activist, Simon Densley, to weed and plant new plants in the sloping garden next to the steps at Worcester Park station.

The plants were bought with donations from several organizations including Waitrose, Kingston Council and South West Trains. Nick Baum, who has been running the volunteer group since September 2009 said he is very pleased with the progress they have made since they first started. “The area was a rubbish strewn eyesore before we began this work, and are really pleased to have helped improve the area for everyone who uses the station. We will continue to look after the area and are planning our next session in late April or early May. We are always looking for more people to come and help us! Contact: Nick Baum: nick@ adconnection.co.uk, 07887 501 730 Simon Densley: sndensley@ gmail.com, 0208 641 8755 The Worcester Park Station Volunteers can be found on Facebook WPL

experience who are only too willing to give advice, help and encouragement to those new to the sport. The club is honoured to have members who are currently holders of national age related records in respect to time trial distances and a current Divisional Time Trial Champion. For those members of the club who want to train for the forthcoming season we organise a training camp for a week at the end of April in Mallorca. In addition during the year several riders will take part in sportives varying between 50 and 150 miles. The club also sponsors and promotes open races during the season. The first is an open 10 mile time trial in April on a local course and the other the Ladies Divisional Road Race Championship in May. During the social season the club has an annual club dinner and dance, barn dance and various other social actives to keep members active and in touch during the winter months, not forgetting the Thursday club night. WPL

The club was formed in 1936 and devolved from the Kingston Section of Cycling Touring Club (CTC) for those members who wanted to race. Today the club caters for riders with interests in all aspects of cycling including racing, touring, off road rides, sportives and social events. The club currently has 60+ members with an age span between 20-85 years the majority of which live in South West London and North Surrey areas. We have regular club runs on Saturdays and Sundays from Horton Country Park. The Saturday rides are social rides to a local garden centre/tea room at the pace of the slowest rider. There is also a mountain bike ride from the same location which goes to the same refreshment venue. The Sunday rides are at a social pace during the winter months and at a faster pace in the racing season for training purposes. On Wednesdays the club joins the Midweek Wayfarers Section for a mid week ride organised by the local section of the CTC. These rides are designed to cater for all levels of riders at a pace suited to their ability. In the racing season at least two-thirds of the members will participate in either club or open time trials races with distances between 10 and 50 miles in duration. The club has a series of events on local courses during the racing season between 10 and 25 miles which is ideal for those members who have not raced before. The club has a wealth of members with racing

View from the city

Too many business initiatives and acronyms around in the world of finance? Justin Urquhart Stewart shares his thoughts

Feeding the Dragon The Year of the Water Dragon, whilst normally providing good joss for those followers of Chinese astrology, is also proving to be a challenging one on various fronts. Not only is there the change of leadership to be managed, much of which of course will be carried below the surface of the water (useful for a water dragon), but also there is a fundamental change in the economic environment. With overseas demand for Chinese goods falling, where is new demand to come from? If this is to be internally driven then how is this going to be managed through, with a Chinese banking system that is already under some considerable pressure? Then there are the social issues of domestic inflation, pressure for jobs and the related levels of unemployment. To this we can also add the level of social unrest between locals and transitory workers, with some flaring into

riots and most notably the remarkable ‘rebellion’ in the village of Wukan which played out like an oriental version of ‘Passport to Pimlico’. Add to this the strikes and demonstrations in certain factories for higher pay, some of which has resulted in even certain manufacturing companies leaving the country to find other lower cost sites. The days of the ‘China Price’ are seemingly now over. Additionally, the balance of the population has changed for the first time in several thousand years – more Chinese now live in the burgeoning cities than in the country. So who is going to feed the populace? The figures are staggering. China has to feed 20% of the world’s population and has only 8% of the world’s available arable land. To further exacerbate this, as incomes have risen so has the demand for better diets away from water, rice and vegetables, to more meat and cooking oil for frying. So the demand for palm oil as well as wheat and corn has risen substantially. As yet the Chinese do not allow the use of genetically modified grains, although this may change over the next few years. China now accounts for 20% of global corn consumption. Seemingly China’s corn imports in January and February this year totalled 1.26m tonnes – four hundred times more than the same time last year! This may have been somewhat distorted as traders were taking advantage of record levels of Chinese corn prices being amongst the highest in the world and were importing overseas supplies to sell at a quick profit. Thus it will be interesting to see if this eases off over the next few months. However, it does mean though that fundamentally the Chinese economy is changing and the

increased demand for food products is going to increase; any weather interruption elsewhere in the world will have a disproportionate price impact in China. Is the US less than it was and will be even less in the future? Some interesting figures have crossed my desk regarding the relative decline in the value of the US economy. In the year 2000, the US accounted for approximately a third of the global economy: today it accounts for less than a quarter. If this continues and the BRICS along with Indonesia and Turkey don’t come to a grinding halt, then this could drop to around a sixth. With the recent discussions around the Buffett Tax, it is also worth reminding ourselves about the strains of the US middle class who seem to be under increasing pressure. For the income gains in 2010, the top 1% of earners gained 93% of the value and the remaining 99% were either seeing no increase or in fact seeing falling incomes. That is a squeezed middle. The great strength of the US economy has been its ability to reinvent itself in times of stress. The question is can it do it again when faced with the twin headed hellhound Orthrus of the deficit and the debt? This of course won’t be really addressed until post the election, but in the meantime is there enough economic momentum to sustain the recovery? All is likely to depend upon the level of corporate confidence, and the next wave of corporate results this week could help us here. WPL

Seasonal Recipe Asparagus Frittata For those who’ve only ever considered asparagus as a luxurious accompaniment to a main course, it’s time to think again. This delicious recipe is simple to cook and the mild flavours of the mozzarella and eggs mean that the asparagus is still the star of the dish. • 275g new potatoes • 450g asparagus • 5 large eggs • 200g buffalo mozzarella • 50g Parmesan, grated • 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley • 2 tbsp olive oil • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water. Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time.

Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato. Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears. Heat a 22cm diameter ovenproof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned. Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up. Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm. Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

The Holy Cross School, New Malden celebrates its 80th Anniversary In 1881 a house called “Southesk” was built in Sandal Road. It was surrounded by fields. The first occupants were the Austine Family. They had 3 children: Beatrice (15), Alice (12) and Henry (13), and Eliza who was a servant. Over the front door there is a Latin inscription, which in English says, “this is the house that John built” – John was Mr Austine’s first name. In 1931 the last of the Austine family had died and the Sisters of the Holy Cross bought “Southesk” from Mr Thomas, the solicitor who was dealing with the estate. The Sisters of the Holy Cross already had a Convent and School in West Wimbledon. The Bishop (Amigo) asked them to start another School in New Malden. Sr Christina, and two other Sisters moved into the house in June 1931. On 23rd September 1931 Holy Cross Convent School was opened with 5 Students. Above excerpt taken from ‘History of the School’, a piece written by Sr Margaret which features in the ‘Memories of Holy Cross Book’ produced for 75th Anniversary of the school in 2007. Copies are available from the school. Over the years the school has grown and more buildings have been added, but the original house front, with minor alterations, still remains as the main entrance to the school. The school is holding an 80th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday 12th May 2012 from 1.15pm to 6pm and all past pupils and staff are welcome to attend. It will be a chance for you to catch up with old friends, tour the school and attend the Thanksgiving Mass. For this special occasion there will also be a Grand Raffle to raise money for the work that the Holy Cross Sisters do for children in the Karnataka State in India. On the grapevine Aret Kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin gives us food for thought.... Our screens are often filled with adverts for the massproduced wines of California or Australia kindly sponsoring our favourite sitcom, but while their wines are generally palatable and cheap, I can’t help but find them a little soul less. Thanks to the cooking show craze that has taken over our screens, the U.K has never before been so culinary obsessed, or so wine and food savvy. Saturday morning kitchen and similar programmes are apparently responsible for a mad weekly rush to consume whichever wine has been recommended by their respective suave wine specialists and as a result, tastes are evolving. But there’s not just the wine to go with the food, but also the wine to go in the food to consider! The best advice I have been given in regards to cooking with wine, is never to cook with a wine that you wouldn’t like to drink (there goes the free bottle from the local takeaway!). As W. C. Fields put it, “I cook with wine; sometimes I even add it to the food!” Some companies have even taken to manufacturing ranges of culinary wines and spirits, with lower alcohol content and enhanced flavour, to create unique and distinctive tastes when added to dishes. The alcohol itself doesn’t add flavor, but aids in the release of flavour molecules in foods, assisting in the dissolving of fats and allowing ingredients to reveal unique characteristics in ways that water or broth cannot. When adding wine to a sauce I’m always careful to allow most of the alcohol to cook off; otherwise I’m left with a harsh, slightly boozy taste. When I get it right (every so often!) and let the alcohol burn away, the flavours become more concentrated and delicious. I will never make another Sunday roast gravy without wine again! Many factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing which wine to add to what dish, such as tannins, acidity, flavor and aroma. For example, tannins, which come from the grapes, skin, stems, and seeds, vary in their strength, with thick-skinned grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon producing more tannic wines than thinner–skinned varietals such as Pinot Noir. Tannins in the wine will in turn affect your eating experience. Tannins are experienced in the mouth as a drying sensation, and a young red wine with lots of tannins, will come across as rather astringent.

However, if you pair this quality in Cabernet Sauvignon with Beef dishes it can have marvelous results! This is because the tannins in the wine are attracted to the proteins in the meat rather than the proteins in your saliva, which creates a softer, less astringent affect in the mouth. If you want to make a sauce for a vegetarian dish, I would recommend a less tannic red wine such as a Pinot Noir, or a white wine. When it comes to acidity, it’s best to match an acidic food with a wine with enough acid to stand up to it, for example matching tomato-based pasta dishes with a Chianti Classico, rather than a soft Merlot, which simply can’t compete! Flavours and Aromas can also make such a difference, and if your dish has one or two dominant flavours, it’s worth matching those to a wine with similar base taste characteristics. An earthy Pinot Noir from Burgundy with mushroom dishes, a light citrus splashed dish with a bright Sauvignon, or a creamy shrimp dish with a buttery Chardonnay. Of course after cooking with these great wines you may be left with some excess! After opening, there’s no doubt that it will start to change and sour. It’s all too easy to dig out that half used, month old wine from the cupboard to add to your dinner, but take a moment to consider whether it’s drinkable or not.You could always buy a state of the art vacuum contraption to make it last longer next time, or alternatively you could just drink that lovely wine before it goes bad! more on being connected to Nature than some people might choose to believe or want to admit. Birdsong, and being surrounded by green things, is beneficial to the human psyche. So much so, that victims of torture can be helped towards healing by gardening, and many people have found that walking in the countryside or growing something (communiing with Nature)is a tremendous solace in difficult emotional times. Nearer to home, Wildlife Aid has benefitted from the Waitrose green chip scheme, and it pleased me to see that our Worcester Park branch has contributed the most, showing that, locally, a lot of people do care about wildlife. I’ve lived in this area for 28 years. We bought our house because of the mature oak tree at the end of the garden. Still this majestic tree graces our patch of land. My garden abounds in wildlife, because I have always made space for it gladly, creating habitats and enjoying the results. Bees are scarcer nowadays, and I hear that this may be due to the insecticides that farmers use on our food crops, and I’ve not seen a thrush or a hedgehog for years, but the sparrows seem to be back and goldfinch numbers are up. I love to wake up to birdsong and to be surrounded by the green and the wild things. There are so many stories to depress, and make us wonder if there is any point in trying to do anything about all the destruction going on around us, but we just have to decide whether we are going to be people

who try, or people who give up in despair. I’m looking forward to this year’s BBC Springwatch, as it always inspires me to carry on and gives me ideas of what I might do next. Just the knowledge that there are enthusiastic, caring people ‘out there’ is enough to give me hope, despite all the gloom and doom about. Shadbolt Park pond has become a thriving habitat in just 2 years. It has shown me how quickly Nature will respond to an opportunity, and that is a great delight to me. I love what we have created there. It continues to inspire and cheer me. Come along and be inspired too! We meet there every Wednesday and Saturday mornings from about 10.30 to 11.30. WPL .

Keeping Pests at Bay - the Natural Way by Pippa Greenwood More and more people have become concerned about using chemicals in the garden, with some gardeners having used chemicals rarely, if at all, for years. Perhaps you are concerned about wildlife and conservation, or using pesticides on plants that children or pets might play near, or that you intend to eat. Greener gardening is not difficult, it is just different. Many infuriating pests can thrive in greenhouses and conservatories, but there are now many ‘natural’ controls available in the form of predators and parasites, which can be purchased from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood.com) and then released indoors. These insects or mites do a great job of keeping common pests at bay, including whitefly, red spider mite and mealy bugs. There are also excellent controls available for slugs and for vine weevils, both of which can be used successfully outside too. Other outdoor pests which can be controlled include leather jackets and chafer grubs and there is even a control to send ants off in the other direction – wonderful if you like to lie on the lawn or enjoy meals in your garden without being nipped! I garden organically and use biological controls regularly. If your conservatory is also a place where you relax or enjoy a drink or a meal, it is especially important not to fill it with potentially harmful chemicals. To use these controls you will need to make sure that your greenhouse or conservatory is not already packed full of chemical residues - otherwise they may kill the beneficial creatures you are introducing. For whitefly you need a tiny parasitic wasp called Encarsia and for red spider mite you need the predatory Phytoseiulus mite. Introduce these amongst infested plants and they will automatically search out the pests, soon getting their numbers under control without you having to lift a finger. It may sound off-putting to release wasps or mites indoors but these little creatures are tiny and will not bite or sting: they are only interested in the pests. Biological controls are tricky for garden centres to stock, as living creatures won’t survive if left sitting on

50

a warm shelf. Mail order is therefore the best way to buy generally, with your predators or parasites arriving in the post, along with strict instructions for storage and using before the use-by date. But don’t let this put you off: biological controls are excellent and used by professional growers. To ensure success you must follow the instructions precisely and make sure you introduce the control when there are only a few pests around. If the air is choked with whitefly it can be a bit too much of an uphill struggle for the tiny little wasps. But the great thing is that you can relax in the knowledge that you’re not jeopardising any wildlife and that, in many cases, the biological control becomes self-perpetuating as the ‘critters’ you have bought breed and spread. Now that’s what I call useful. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for her newsletter (and receive a free ebook on organic gardening) and shop from the new products area which offers a great selection of biological controls (for slugs, vine weevils, red spider mite, whitefly etc) plus growing frames, cloches, raised bed kits and lots, lots more.
