Welcome to
our October edition I am often being asked if our financial columnist Justin Urquhart Stewart lives locally. The answer is no, unlike most of our other contributers. No, in my past life, pre-husband/children and the almost tropical climate of London, I worked at Barclays Stockbrokers in Glasgow where Justin was a Director and regular visitor. And when he asked me what I was up to a couple of years ago he very kindly offered his contributions. Thanks to him and all our other dedicated writers, in particular David Rymill, Ruth Jemmett, Carol Williams and Gary Weaving - you are all absolute stars! If you’re a local business who wants to communicate your message to the good people of Worcester
Park then give me a call to find out how we can help you. The deadline for the November editions is 17th October. A great ad is only a phone call away. And if you’re a club, school or other organisation wanting to promote an event in the lead up to Christmas make sure you get in touch by phone or email. Best wishes until next time! Worcester Park History Harvesting through the ages
The month of October is harvest time, and at St Mary’s Church Cuddington, at the top of The Avenue, there will be a harvest weekend on 6-7 October.
On Saturday 6th October there will be a Harvest Fayre from 12 noon to 3 pm – in the church grounds if the weather is fine, or else indoors. There will be stalls selling cakes and produce, hand-stitched cards and other crafts, books and toys; other attractions will include a harvest hamper raffle, a barbecue, teas, a bottle tombola, and sideshows such as ‘sift the sand’ and ‘pick a lolly’. In keeping with the occasion, there will be a ‘best scarecrow’ competition, judged during the afternoon, and entries are invited on the day – you can make a scarecrow or come dressed as one! On Sunday 7th, the Harvest Festival service will be at 10am, and this will be a chance to hear the newlyinstalled Vicar, the Revd Andy Cain, speaking. Andy has moved to Cuddington with his family after serving in a group of 13 churches in rural Leicestershire, but he and his wife Liz both have local roots, having grown up in Carshalton. Continuing with the harvest theme, I thought we might look at a few episodes in the story of farming in Worcester Park. Some of our earliest information about the area relates to farming, and comes from excavations in Old Malden, at Manor Farm Close, the Vicarage site and Percy Gardens. The finds give clues to local daily life, such as grinding corn (part of a quern was found in what may have been a ditch dating from the 3rd-4th century AD, at Manor Farm). There were cattle and sheep bones from Romano-British times, with pig bones becoming more common in medieval
times, and soil samples gave other clues to the inhabitants’ diet: various wheat species, hulled barley and oats were all present by the Early Iron Age, before 400 BC. In medieval Malden, the land was farmed by many different people who divided the land into long narrow strips. When a London merchant, Thomas Weeding, turned his attention to Malden in the 1830s, several local farms still had scattered inter-locking fields based on these medieval strips. In 1830 he bought, for £1,000, Moots Farm, including a farmhouse close to Church Road (between Avondale Avenue and Yew Tree Close) and about 86 acres of land. He built a new mansion, Fullbrooks, on part of the property, and between 1832 and 1848 he enlarged his estate by

buying eight more small farms. A surveyor inspected the Malden farms in 1839. Mr Weeding’s consolidation of landholdings was still under way, and so perhaps not surprisingly he found old-fashioned agricultural techniques on the scattered fields: “The mode of husbandry on the Arable land is scarcely reducible to a system… and the cultivation is adapted in an excessive degree to the demands of the Vicinity for Hay and Straw, almost the whole of which … are sold from the farms.” About a quarter of the arable land was used for wheat, and another quarter for oats. Other crops grown included seeds or clover, peas and beans. There were also about 125 acres of meadow producing 111 cart loads of hay. Altogether the produce was worth nearly £3,500 a year. Yew Tree Close, off Church Road, includes the site of Malden House or Pond Farm, probably used in the 19th century as the farmhouse for the Fullbrooks home farm. In the 1920s it was known locally as Mardens Farm after the farmer James Marden, who ran it as a

fruit and dairy farm. Maurice Upperton recalled that, around 1920, the geese kept by the previous tenant Frederick Ingleby in the orchard across Church Road proved an ample guard for the fruit. One of the farms in Malden not acquired by Thomas Weeding was Manor Farm, where Manor Farm Close was built in 1997. In the 1900s-30s Manor Farm was run by Arthur Fox. Daisy Tolley recalled rolling churns of milk from here to Watkins’s dairy in Park Terrace: “My brother and I used to push the milk churns, and used to stop at Tubby Hyde’s [a shop in Church Road] and get a cream bun or something like that to take us on our way.” The agricultural calendar had an impact on Malden Parochial School in the 19th century: the Headmaster Arthur Hann found in June 1882 that the attendance was “rather poor no doubt owing to the mowing and haymaking”, and in August 1890 “some boys are absent helping relatives in the barley and oats fields.” He may have been sympathetic, as many pupils probably expected to go into farming: in February 1885 he “took boys in the fields, showing them different objects with explanation, such as ploughing, manuring, hedging and drainage and the uses of such labour.” Our illustration this week shows that early residents of Kingsmead Avenue, in the 1920s, could look out of their windows and see haymaking in the fields where Oaks Avenue and Tudor Avenue would soon be built. You can read more about the farms of Worcester Park, and other aspects of life in Worcester Park through the centuries, in my new book Worcester Park, Old Malden and North Cheam: History at our Feet, which is now available. Copies will be on sale at the Harvest Fayre, or phone 8330 6563 for more details. David Rymill. david.rymill@hants.gov.uk WPLife

Spotlight on... Sally Berlemont
ILane am delighted to be the new Headteacher of Green Primary School, after four years as the school’s Deputy Headteacher - during which time the school has developed into a ‘good’ school with many ‘outstanding’ features. Green Lane is a very special place, which offers children the opportunity to explore a wide range of talents and interests through an innovative and creative curriculum. I am fortunate to work with an exceptionally caring and committed team who are excited about providing high quality educational experiences for our pupils. We are fortunate to have extensive grounds at Green Lane, which enables us to ensure our pupils are able to spend time learning outside the classroom too. Our children enjoy a wide range of clubs, largely run by the school staff. I love to hear what they have all been up to during my achievement assembly on a Monday! One of my favourite times of the day is lunchtime when I can sit and eat with the children and find out about their day and what they have been learning.
Fortunately I get to spend time in all the classes and teach regularly which helps me in my quest to learn any new pupils’ names! Deciding upon the right school for your child can be a daunting prospect and making sure you and your child feel confident about the school you choose is important. At Green Lane we would encourage you to visit and spend a little time getting to know us. We will be having an open day on 24th October at 9:30am; we look forward to welcoming you. I am very much looking forward to leading Green Lane on its journey to being an outstanding school through the coming years and ensuring we remain a school which stands out. WPLife

Ruth Jemmett Writes Peace and the butterfly effect O n 24th October 1945 - a year to the day before
14
I was born - The United Nations organisation came into existence, after its ratification by 50 nations in June of that year. Its aim was to prevent the world from descending into the madness of yet another international war. Of course, since that time, our planet has definitely not been conflict-free, but without doubt, the calming effect of the U.N. peacekeeping forces has frequently prevented potential hotspots from escalating into places of full-scale conflagrations. One of the United Nation’s offshoots - UNICEF - has also done sterling work in supporting children in war-torn and developing countries. One cannot pretend that the U.N has permanently solved the problem of man’s aggressive instincts, but the fact that it exists at all is a tribute to the fact that the will is there to organise our world in a more civilized way. So why do men like to vie with each other so much? Throughout history we have had to accept that the testosterone that spurs men on to find a mate and create a family, is also responsible for giving them the drive to want to control other people and also the environment around them. On the plus side this hormone has given us inspirational male leaders and wonderful engineering feats, but on the minus side it has been responsible for the killing of countless millions of people throughout history. We try and tame baser instincts in males through education and good examples, but Mother Nature has created the sexes in such a way that even the tiniest boy will enjoy fighting more than a little girl - ask any parent or teacher! Of course females can be aggressive too, but because of the way OUR hormones work, we are much less likely to fight for the sake of it. Male prison inmates far outnumber female ones for crimes of violence. Happily, most male aggression can be channelled into constructive things, such as sport. Even so, as we frequently witness, even a simple football match can degenerate into a mini-war in the minds of both players and fans! To a certain degree we have to accept that “boys will be boys”, but even in modern society such as ours, 2 women a week are
killed by male partners in this country. You would think that with such a shocking statistic in evidence, that stress would be put on teaching our young males to be less confrontational. Unfortunately the media (mostly run by men) seems to make this impossible. Alarmingly high numbers of television programmes, DVDs and films, and even many cartoons, trivialise the horrific impact of physical assaults and murders, often presenting such things as family entertainment. Human beings are merely trained mammals who like to copy what they see around them. Is it any wonder that our boys think it is ‘fun’ to shoot people in video games? How can the producers of such mindwarping material not see the connection between showing such violence to vulnerable young minds and the increasing incidences of mindless stabbings, brutal muggings, and generally all-round war-like tendencies? If the act of killing is presented in a casual way, where cartoon or video characters bounce back to life after vicious beatings, can we really be that shocked that our prisons are filled with indoctrinated

thugs? After all, they have been taught to disrespect life from their earliest years. We now live in a world where many children have rarely heard the word “No!”, and much wrongdoing seems to go unpunished, with perpetrators of crime often seem to come off better than their victims. Each newborn baby is, in essence, a savage, and will continue to be one unless their baser instincts are reined in during their formative years. Yes, men will always want to compete. It is natural, and for the most part, a good thing. The wonderful Olympic Games that our country recently hosted bear witness to the fact that competition can be a force for good as well as bad. The wars that the United Nations continually try to prevent don’t just happen. Great oaks from little acorns grow. Each family and town of every nation is but a microcosm of a larger world. Some people reading this may have heard of The Butterfly Effect. For those of you who haven’t I will explain that it is a tenet of The Chaos Theory. Simply put it suggests that a beating butterfly’s wing will, in a very small way, affect its surroundings. Many butterflies’ wings can create a breeze that, can in turn, join other breezes until the final effect is a hurricane. If we, as a supposedly civilized country, can show by example, in even a small way - yes, even in leafy Worcester Park - how decent people solve problems by negotiation and not physical violence (starting with those wretched violent video games!) perhaps the world at large will, one day, look back upon the second millennium and say “Do you know, they actually fought barbaric WARS in those days?” As the late great politician Mahatma Gandhi once said : “Non-violence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our very being”. As they put the flags out to celebrate United Nations Day on the 24th October this year (as a small child I hoped they were also putting them out to celebrate my birthday!) perhaps we can all say a silent prayer that one day there won’t be a need for such an organisation to curtail warlike behaviour. As a much loved hymn says: “Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me”. Ruth Jemmett is a Member of The Society of Authors Copyright 5th September 2012 WPLife

On the grapevine
Aret Kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin on Chilean wine I have a list as long as my arm of places that I want to visit and wine regions that I’d like to explore, with Argentina and Chile featuring at the top of my wish list. Something about Chile’s crisp fruity whites and punchy reds has always been so attractive and it appears that the
rest of the UK agrees with me! As of November 2011, the UK replaced the USA as the top importer of bottled Chilean wine in the world, with Chile overtaking South Africa for the first time. In fact, just under one in ten of all bottles of wine sold in the UK are Chilean. Independent wine retailers (as opposed to Supermarkets, pubs and bars) have reported that their customers now purchase more Chilean than French wine, but where did this UK obsession with Chilean wine come from? Chile’s dramatic landscape offers remarkably diverse urban and natural locations, with most regions boasting fertile soil and irrigation water from rivers, which combine to create the ideal conditions for the production of quality wines. Initially, I put its popularity down to its intensely drinkable style and low prices, but far from being considered as just great value, Chilean wine is increasingly being recognized for its unique blend of old world philosophy and innovation, its purity of fruit and its diversity of climate. A new generation of winemakers, are using state-ofthe-art production techniques and facilities, including infrared scanners that aid in matching grape varieties to soil types, resulting in optimum conditions for producing excellent wines. As a multitude of UK restaurants and venues continue to add Chile’s diverse range of varietals and blends to their wine lists, Chile’s profile is steadily on the rise. After all, one thing that Chile does really well, is a good food wine. Chilean reds are a well known accompaniment to rich meat dishes, but Chilean Sauvignon Blanc with its distinctive crisp acidity is ideal with seafood and salads and is emerging as a UK wine list favourite. It seems that
20
every bar or restaurant in central London will have a Chilean Sauvignon as the house white and honestly, they really are a dependably good choice. Most people are aware that Chile produces fantastic young Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Sauvignon Blancs and even Chardonnays, but less people know about Chile’s rising superstar varietal, Carmenere. The rediscovery of Carmenere in the mid 1990’s created a huge buzz within the wine world. Originally a Bordeaux variety, it was thought to be extinct until tests revealed that many growers in Chile had preserved it, believing the grapes in their vineyards to be Merlot! So perfectly was it suited to the climate, that the grape is now used to create some of Chile’s most distinctive wines. If you haven’t yet experienced a Carmenere and are a fan of Merlot, you will find it to be similar in character, full bodied and rich but with more intensity of dark fruit (blackberries) and with an added kick of black pepper. Next time you order an Indian curry or sit down for a lovely Mexican meal, give Carmenere a go, it’s delicious! Go on, she’s worth it! WPLife

Seasonal recipe Autumn Pudding
Ttherymost this variation on summer pudding making of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums,
blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert. • 175g caster sugar • 3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced • 4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced • 100g raspberries • 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced • 100g blackcurrants or blueberries • 100g blackberries • 10 slices thick-sliced white bread • Extra fruit, to decorate Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool. Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round
cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half. Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin. Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup. Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit. WPLife

Autumn Treeworks Roger Kerr RJ Tree Services As autumn approaches it is a useful time to
do a “health check” on your trees and consider the type of arboricultural works that may be necessary. A great deal of treecare is based upon common sense observations and simple management procedures; for example, we all feed our lawns and weed our borders, but when did you last mulch and apply a slow release fertiliser to your trees? In terms of a health check a full list is available on our website. As trees develop the problems of overcrowding and excessive size can occur. It is worth checking your buildings insurance policy concerning the requirement for trees to be maintained within set distances such as 8m from property foundations. It may be necessary to reduce some trees in size in order to avoid suffocating slower growing smaller trees in the vicinity. We often advise tree surgery to be done in
phases as a cycle, by this we mean that if treeworks are spread over a number of years your garden trees are always evolving in a succession. Remember that if one tree undergoes surgery it will create opportunities for other trees to develop and flourish. Trees often have set seasons for works to be done. Good examples are Poplars and Willows in the winter along with fruit trees. Surgery should be done carefully to avoid creating problems of dieback or disease exploiting the pruning

cuts. Arborists should give you the appropriate professional advice. A variety of surgery options are available for your trees; it is never appropriate to just “lop” a tree. Proper treeworks range from maintaining the spread of the tree but thinning the canopy (crown thin); removing the lower limbs to improve garden light conditions (crown lift) to reducing the overall crown size done as percentages from 5 to 30% (crown reduction) or a hard prune called pollarding. All surgeons must be qualified and fully insured as well as working to agreed BS standards. WPLife

View from the City
The Exchange Bridge To The East by Justin Urquhart Stewart
Ewriting arlier this year I was about the mutter
from the gutter concerning the possible linking up of the London Stock Exchange and the Singapore Stock Exchange, and now it seems mercurially as though something is about to happen. More official details are to follow soon I understand but a cross trading of stocks may well be an excellent start. However, there is much more to be gained if this develops efficiently and successfully. From a more imaginative point of view, the blending of the historical strength of one with the youthful dynamism of the other should make for a perfect blend to the benefit of both. From a more

practical view such a move, I believe, is a very exciting development in the growth of both markets and their domestic economies. For example, the ability for the LSE to attract more far eastern investors has to help any market and especially in terms of liquidity and better price creation, particularly in smaller and often high tech companies. This can be good for both companies and investors and can only improve the standing of the LSE which, under its last management team, seemed bereft of any tangible strategic planning that I could identify. Singapore is not just a financial dynamo in South East Asia, but also a haven of professionalism and excellent regulatory standards, in a region not well known for such reputations. There is much that London should learn from their development. The result has been the growth of the business entrepôt which has attracted new business not just from the region but from around the globe. London should learn from this, remember its own roots and not try to lecture. WPLife Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor.

Have you caught the volunteering ‘bug’? I
f like me, you spent the two weeks of the Olympics in August glued to the TV and admiring not only all the efforts of the competitors but also all those wonderful volunteers, or ‘Game Makers’ as they were called, perhaps you have been inspired to do some volunteering too? So read on! Cards for Goods Causes (CFGC) is the largest multicharity Christmas card organisation in the UK selling charity Christmas cards for more than 300 charities in around 300 locations from the Channel Islands to Pitlochry. Over the last 5 years charities have received £20 million from their card sales. The inspiration for Cards for Good Causes came in 1959 when a group of charities met to discuss the coordination of publicity for selling their cards at Christmas. Some of those founder charities still work with CFGC today. We keep our infrastructure simple and efficient, and strive to keep our operating costs as low as possible to maximise the amount of money each charity (or its trading subsidiary) receives from its card sales. Our band of volunteers, who return year after year, are key to this. So how about helping us in our local shop in Kingston? The shop is in All Saint’s Parish Church and will open this year on Saturday 20 October. We trade from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Saturday. Cards are sold on behalf of over 40 charities, including local guest charities Princess Alice Hospice, Shooting Star Chase Children’s Hospice, the Royal Marsden Cancer Fund and the Royal Star & Garter Home. We also sell a range of Christmas Goods, including advent calendars and wrapping paper and gift tags. We always welcome more volunteers, and customers, so if you think you can spare a few hours each week during November and December why not give me a call – Su Anstey on 0208 330 1893 or email me on su.anstey@cfgc.org.uk Cards for Good Causes Limited pays the participating charities (or their trading subsidiaries) at least 75p in every pound from their card sales, less the VAT payable on the amount retained by CFGC. The retained amount covers CFGC’s costs of running the temporary charity Christmas card shops. In addition to these costs, the participants have to pay for the production and distribution of their cards. WPLife

Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan I see that the fashion wears out more apparel than the man. William Shakespeare The lovely autumn weather made me recall a conversation had, ironically, whilst huddled under the awning of the tent one damp August bank holiday evening. The questions we were discussing were: 1. What is it acceptable for men to wear in a heat wave? 2. How can it be that the weather which requires the least amount of clothing leaves the most room for sartorial horrors? 3. What is it about the heat that makes men abandon any sensibility we would normally exercise during the rest of the year? 4. Do we feel that sunshine gives us permission to take a holiday from taste?

Fill each cell with a number from 1-6. No number can be repeated in any row or column. The numbers in the heavily outlined set of squares (cages) must combine in any order to produce the target number in the top corner, using only the mathematical operator specified: +, -, x or /. Numbers can be repeated within a cage, but not in the same row or column.
Here, in no particular order, are our style no-no’s for gentlemen of a certain age: 1. Socks and sandals Any other time of year, we seek to keep our feet bundled up in warm socks: argyle ones for work, a low-cut athletic pair for the gym and, on occasion, the heavy-duty wool variety in the cold months. Socks and sandals are a bad mix. Sandals are supposed to be worn with bare feet rather than socks. Stubborn men who ignore this battling on regardless, clad in brown leather sandals and white socks, look unattractive and get hot feet. 2. Muscle vests Muscle vests are designed to complement toned bodies but even if you are young and look like an Abercrombie & Fitch model then wear them under something or to the gym. For the rest of us they just highlight reveal wobbly white upper limbs and tummies which brings us on to ... 3.Letting it all hang out When the sun is blazing, many men take off their upper clothing in an attempt to stay cool. While this may be tempting, being semi-naked on the High Street is not neither cool nor enjoyed by most observers. 4.Flip-flops Sunshines’s official footwear is undoubtedly the between-the-toe flip-flop: Ideal for a barbecue, a beachside stroll or if your job is to rescue people from swimming pools but the not in the Bentalls Centre. 5. Strong fragrances You might be hot and sweaty but masking it with litres of Kouros isn’t fooling any one . 6. Anything containing Lycra (See VV May 2010)

Cheam Common Art Group Tyears. his group has has been in existence for over 50 It was originally founded by mothers of
pupils attending Cheam Common School, Balmoral Road, following a display of pupils’ art work, at which time the mothers professed on interest in taking up painting themselves. It was suggested by Mr. Heath, the then Art Master at the school, that they started a group themselves, this they did and it has continued to this day meeting weekly. One of the founder members was Mrs. Joan Avery who was a well-known local artist who specialised in paintings of birds, butterflies and botanical pictures. In earlier years the Group was flourishing and had around 30/40 members but of recent times the numbers have diminished to around 12/13 members. We try to encourage interest in a programme of different aspects of painting and drawing and have occasionally had a guest speaker or demonstrator. We provide coffee during the evening and all encourage each other in our work. During the
summer break when we do not meet we try to arrange sketching outings to local venues and sometimes farther afield to NT properties or villages in Surrey. Each year we hold an exhibition of work – this gives us a goal to work for – the last one was in April in the Ebbisham Centre in Epsom, this is to be repeated next year. During August we took part in “Worcester Park Library Art Scheme which had a display in one of the vacant local shops. We are a friendly older group but we always welcome and encourage new younger members. We are in need of new members so anyone who is interested in becoming a member should contact Brenda Banks on 020 8330 0928 or come along and meet us – we would be delighted to meet you. We meet in a room within the Christchurch with St. Philip Church complex, Ruskin Drive, Worcester Park where we meet weekly on Monday evenings 7.30 - 9.30pm WPLife

The Pop-Up Gallery
The Friends of Worcester Park Library Thosted he Pop-Up Gallery, Worcester Park, recently a private view to thank the local artists,
volunteers and supporters who made the project possible. We celebrated the successful conclusion of our two month long temporary art exhibition. ‘Pop-Ups’ are temporary uses of vacant shops, this was the first in the local area. Temporary uses of empty shops benefit local communities and businesses - by making high streets safer, busier, and more attractive to visitors. Rents and rates are often waived to allow community groups or new businesses to develop which helps to stimulate the local economy. The Library’s Pop-Up rejuvenated the vacant shop at the top of the High street (44 Central Road,) which was the old Model Road and Rail, and had previously been unoccupied. The Pop-Up Gallery hosted a temporary exhibition, children’s craft area and related programme of events. The project was curated by Worcester Park Library and staffed by volunteers from the Friends Group and Craft
Club. The project was successfully funded through the Local Committee’s participatory budgeting programme. The exhibition showcased works by local artists, many from local colleges and local community groups. Graduates of Wimbledon School of Art displayed a selection of paintings, prints, sculptures and film installations. Cheam Common Art Group, who meet weekly at St Philips and Christchurch – and exhibit regularly - displayed a noteworthy collection of their paintings. The children’s craft area was a great place for families to visit, play and create artworks. Children were offered the chance to paint and draw surrounded by inspirational examples. Or explore the exhibition through the gallery trail. The event programmes encouraged visitors to enjoy making artworks such as painting on canvas and felt making. Family and community events included gallery based storytime and baby music classes.

A better life Man V Slug
Tthat:heOne late poet Dorothy Frances Gurney wrote is nearer God’s Heart in a garden than
anywhere else on Earth. That may be true, but preparing the garden, for growing vegetables, is its own special form of purgatory. Nature conspires to make the task as difficult as possible, so we took it in stages. Step One – Peat-less pots are go. We chose green bean and mange tout seeds, and filled the little pots from our compost bin. I soon discovered that it’s a fine line between moist and soggy. And that the ‘which plant comes up first’ sweepstake may be subject to tampering. Anne knows who I mean, so we’ll say no more... Step Two - Mark out the plot, somewhere beyond the cypress tree’s reach to allow for the possibility of direct sunlight. That’s the easy part - it makes you feel like you’re retracing the first, tentative steps of our huntergatherer ancestors when they realised that a little porridge might be nice for a change. Step Three - Dig for Pyrrhic victory, trusting that the veg will subsequently be worthy of your muscles’ sacrifice. Once the soil has been dug, it’s time to remove the grass and weeds. The chickens loved some of the grass, but the worms received a reprieve, as they were on active service. Step Four - A ginger beer and a bag of crisps for me. Then the soil needs to be turned over and broken up, to help aerate it (a Scrabble word if ever I heard one). I also removed the stones, which is especially important if you’re planting from seeds. Step Five - Dig in the pots when the little plants look old enough to fend for themselves. Once they were installed, I added enough bamboo canes and netting to deter any opportunistic gastropod-about-garden. Or so I thought. Within a day of completing our defences we were invaded, in a flagrant act of mollusc aggression. We employed slug pellets; we - that is, I - made random security patrols. Enemy snails were sent to the chickens for summary execution, also known by the chooks as ‘snack time’. I did try and reason with the slugs, principally because the chickens weren’t keen on them, but settled for either eviction into the back lane or incarceration in the garden waste bin. But still they came. My vigilance gradually paid off and our plant casualties decreased. Then came that magical day when the first veg flowers appeared. We weren’t out of
44
the woods (or slugs) yet though and you’d be surprised by the amount of slug pellets we used. Honestly, I don’t know where they put it all. Having freshly picked beans, from garden to plate in a matter of minutes, is one of life’s little pleasures. Having to play nettle roulette, when picking the mange tout, because I couldn’t be bothered to keep up with the weeding, was less of a joy. The mange tout still tasted great though and it has me thinking about nettle soup. Next time I’ll let the beanlings grow taller before I plant them in, to give them more of a fighting chance. I’ll also make my own peat-less pots out of old newspaper. It’s the Blue Peter approach to green living. Derek Thompson is a writer and humorist based in the West Country. book review by Robin Gill W orcester Park, Old Malden & North Cheam History At Our Feet By David Rymill
When I wrote my review of Tim Everson’s book New Malden Through Time in February this year, I mentioned how rare I thought history books which covered our area were. Well, just over six months later there is another one written by an equally proficient historian David Rymill. David, has written a monthly history article for our sister magazine “Worcester Park Life” since it first started in June 2008. He also produced an excellent book about Worcester Park & Cuddington A Walk Through The Centuries in 2000. As the name suggests the format of the book was a walk, which started and ended at
Worcester Park Station. Armed with this book packed with photographs and the memories of residents, the traveller was well equipped to take a stroll through the local history of the area. Now David has stretched his legs and entered “our patch” encompassing Old Malden in his journey. With photographs of the original Old Malden Library, and Plough Green shops, together with memories of happy local schooldays in the twenties, thirties, and forties. He tells how Manor Park came into being, and the little known POW camp in Malden. The reminiscences of the locals bring the whole story to life. The book is written in a very readable way, and can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own armchair, it doesn’t have to be used

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams
A century ago, on 16 May, the Wildlife Trusts began life as the Society for the Promotion of
Nature Reserves, founded by Charles Rothschild. By 1915 a list of 284 sites worthy of preservation had been compiled by leading scientists and naturalists, but the first statutory nature reserves were not established until after the second world war. Early on these reserves were protected from development but also had restricted access to people. Within a short time, however, the Trusts realised their potential education value and began to open more of them to the public. Today the Wildlife Trusts have a combined membership of over 800,000. I've been a member of the Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) for about 25 years and was extremely glad to have their help and advice when I began to dream of restoring the old dried up pond in Shadbolt Park. They do some amazing and inspirational work. Visiting one of the Reserves is always a tremendous pleasure. Just knowing that there are people who spend their lives protecting and conserving wildness is a source of great hope and

solace to me for the future, something on the 'credit' side when awful things happen. The University of Surrey, in partnership with the SWT, is currently undertaking a 3 year study into the psychological impact of birdsong on human behaviour and brains. There is a great deal of anecdotal evidence that suggests a positive correlation between birdsong and our sense of wellbing. This study will aim to add some science to the issue. Pupils from a few local schools were recently given lessons in hedge laying, a day organised by the SWT and funded by the West Weald Land Partnership. These newly planted hedgerows will provide food and nesting sites for many species, inlcuding dormice, Barbastelle bats and wood white butterlfiles, all of which are now rare. They will also help connect woodlands so that wildlife can move more freely about the countryside and be better able to adapt to climate change. Recently the National Trust launched a landmark report entitled 'Natural Childhood' written by Stephen Moss, in which he reviews the evidence for the long term damage to every one of us, and to society as a

to see the swathes of long grass and wildflowers that have been left to grow there. It was hard to believe that I was not in a meadow in the heart of the countryside. Nature is wonderful. I have always thought so. Nothing we can manufacture matches it. Not surprisingly it has inspired much poetry down the ages. Autumn is a time of wonderful colours and abundance, the 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness' as Keats put it; a perfect time to explore deciduous woodland. Go and get inspired by Nature, then come home and turn your garden into a little haven for wildlife. A tree or two, in every garden, a line of hedge, a compost heap, a dead wood pile, some long grass and wildflowers, birdfeeders, nestboxes and, if possible, a pond. Eden. WPLife

whole, that will be the likely result of the modern child's disconnection to Nature and the lost spirit of discovery in the natural outdoors. A garden that encourages wildlife is a good start to introducing children to Nature, and getting along to the local SWT reserves for their 'Wildlife What's On' days are wonderful ways to spend weekends. Zoöpraxiscope Gets Fitting Home Eadweard Muybridge was born in Kingston upon Thames in 1830 but moved away in 1852 to make his fortune in America. He came back to live in Kingston in the 1890s and when he died in 1904, he bequeathed his equipment and prints to Kingston Museum. The zoöpraxiscope- the moving image projector, was designed by Muybridge in order to depict various motion effects using painted figures, based on actual sequence photographs, on round glass discs. A Crocodile In Kingston! The museum mascot, a cartoon crocodile based on this museum artefact, has been created by local artist and illustrator Stephanie Strickland. The ‘name our crocodile’ competition ran throughout June and the winning name was Snappity, which we think is the perfect name for our cheeky crocodile mascot. The name was chosen by Sebastian Lee, aged 3. Free Weekly Kid’s Fun! Enjoy Some Tulip Mania by Pippa Greenwood Tpotential ulips are amazingly good value and have the to transform your flower beds and tubs
next spring with their silken-petalled, strikingly coloured blooms. Late Planting Tulip bulbs are best planted from the last half of October and well in to November. Plant too early and the bulbs will be far more prone to damage by the fungal ‘tulip fire’ disease which wrecks the leaves and flowers. Gritty Bed If your garden soil is inclined to be clay and rather heavy, tulips may suffer and are certainly less likely to come back after their first wet winter. A heavy loam works well but anything that isn’t well drained may cause problems. You can solve this to a good extent by digging an extra large planting hole and putting an inch or two of horticultural gravel or grit in the base of the hole before planting the bulb. Don’t use grit or gravel left over from the local building site, as this often contains salts and other contaminants which may harm or kill garden plants. Contained Colour Tulips make great plants for containers such as window boxes, tubs and decent-sized pots and planters. Shorter varieties generally look best (check the front of the pack or catalogue for heights). Good drainage is essential so make sure that there are plenty of crocks in the base of the container and that it’s well supplied with drainage holes. Try either a loam-free multi-purpose compost or mix 50:50 a loam-based compost and a bit of added grit. Fantastic Foliage Many tulips also have good looking foliage which can help to bring colour and texture to your pots and beds. Try the Kaufmanniana types such as ‘Johann Strauss’(dark red flowers with yellow edges and mottled leaves), or even better the Greigii type tulips which all have maroon patterning on the leaves, such as ‘Red Riding Hood’ (richest red with black). Tulip Partners Richest red tulips surrounded by a mist of pale blue forget-me-nots are dreamily pretty. This wonderful combination is easy to achieve; you can sow the forgetme-not seed now, as you plant the bulbs, or if you prefer sow them early in the year, just before the bulbs emerge. The display you achieve will be breathtakingly beautiful. Long-lived Lovelies In most gardens tulips are not the longest living bulbs, however you can always try growing the so-called species tulips such as Tulipa sprengeri or Tulipa turkestanica. They have smaller, less-showy flowers and
will be considerably more expensive initially but they look gorgeous, tend to last longer and, better still, also spread extensively in the right spot. After a few years a carpet of species tulips can be achieved, and will take your breath away. Good Companions Tulips look great with each other. Try combining the richly purple-black leaved Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ with any purple tulip such as ‘Passionale’, or for a wackier effect chose one of the frilly petalled parrot-tulips with green streaks on their petals, or the green ‘spring green’ tulip, combined with any low-growing shrub. Now is the best time of year to think tulips - start planting and transform your garden for spring. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com. While there, visit the new products area for a great selection including signed copies of Pippa’s books, Grower Frames, cloches, pop-up plant cloches, raised bed kits, delightful terracotta herb planters and wall plaques, Nemaslug and other natural pest controls and lots, lots more! Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving TworkhisoutMonth I have a story of how some things can well when everything comes together. It
concerns a local resident who had been the victim of a burglary in which she had lost her jewellery. Items of jewellery were found on a grass verge by Mrs Patricia Griffiths, a co-ordinator for the local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, who informed the Worcester Park Safer Neighbourhoods Team. I attended Mrs Griffiths address and recovered the jewellery. I believe the items were probably discarded as the thieves sorted through the pieces they wanted to keep after parking by the roadside. After making a number of enquiries, I called Sutton Police Station’s media officer Colin Walden and arranged for an appeal to be sent out to local press on the 6th September. Colin took photos of some of the recovered jewellery, particularly a silver locket that contained photographs of a man and woman. These were released with the appeal and on the 8th September I received an email from a lady who said that a neighbour of hers was the owner of the jewellery. I made contact the neighbour and made an appointment to call round so that she might identify the stolen items. Mrs Irene Clinch, an 81 year-old widow who is a keen dancer, has been dancing since she was ten and attends the weekly classes at the local Highfield Hall, she told me one of her dance friends recognised her from the photos in the press appeal. I was very pleased to reunite Irene with the recovered items, which included the silver locket and a number of pewter Celtic crosses and chains in the name of St Justin, Cornwall, which had been purchased by Irene and her late husband, Brian during many holidays together in the West Country where Brian had a cousin. Irene told me, “When I was burgled, I was upset and distressed and didn’t expect to see any of my jewellery again - so it’s lovely to have some items returned. The police have been really kind, considerate and caring in the way they have looked after me, looked for evidence and provided me with security and safety advice.” But Irene had the following heartfelt appeal to the burglars: “The jewellery that remains stolen is irreplaceable and has huge sentimental value for me personally containing many precious memories of times with Brian. If you have it in your heart please let me have them back.” The jewellery items that are still missing include: • Her three-diamond stone engagement ring • A sapphire and diamond dress ring • A gold locket (smaller than the silver one) with photos of her and her husband • A pearl pendant, and a ruby and diamond pendant, given as presents by her husband on their respective 30th and

I can also help with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and low self-esteem. I am a counsellor/psychotherapist based in Worcester Park and hold a Human Givens Diploma (with merit). Human Givens therapy was developed about twenty years ago and works with the client to establish which of their emotional needs are not being met in balance. My method using the Human Givens approach to counselling is holistic (treating the whole person). I establish which of the client’s emotional needs are not being met and then help them to get these met in a healthy and effective way.
