Worcester Park History It’s Worcester Park Life.... but not as we know it This month we feature a painting which will be on display when St Mary’s Church, Cuddington, at the top of The Avenue, is specially open under the nationwide Heritage Open Days scheme this month. St Mary’s will be open from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 8th September. There will be two newly-produced displays – one featuring fairs, fetes and Fundays in Cuddington over the 60 years of the Queen’s reign; and a display of maps of Worcester Park from four centuries. India Russell, a poet with long-standing Worcester Park connections, whose work has been published widely, will be selling copies of her collections of poetry. All are welcome, and there is no need to book. There is plenty of parking in the church car park. Tea and coffee will be available, and most of the church complex (including wc) is accessible to wheelchair users. The Heritage Open Day will also be the first chance for residents to see a rare oil painting of Worcester Park as a romantic rural landscape, as the area still was in the 1920s, largely unchanged from the final years of Nonsuch Palace in the 17th century. Happily, this sizeable painting by the artist J M Ducker – which predates our familiar suburban townscape by less than a decade – recently came home to Worcester Park, 85 years after it was painted. Little is known about Jack Ducker, but he is thought to have been a Scottish artist, born in the 19th century. He specialised in painting landscapes, especially in the Scottish Highlands, but also painted in Surrey. Distant views of hills and mountains, with gnarled trees and placid pools in the foreground, and the occasional inconspicuous animal or human, can be seen in many of his works. Most surviving examples are thought to date from 1910 to 1930. We do not know how old he was then; possibly he had been trained in painting in this traditional style some time earlier and took up his palette again after a career in another field. The painting is titled ‘View near Worcester Park, Surrey’. Subsequent research revealed a smaller version, painted

the same year, had been titled ‘Worcester Park, Surrey, on the Epsom Road. The scene shows a rough track passing a pool and Ducker’s favoured gnarled trees; beyond, a group of cattle seem to be resting peacefully, and in the distance the ground gently falls away. Ducker produced several paintings of this location with only slight variations, including one with a date of 1923. He also

painted a number of copies of a view of ‘Surrey pines at Haslemere’, and this has sometimes been sold alongside the Worcester Park picture. The two make an excellent pair, with the Worcester Park elms (I presume) mirroring 7 the Haslemere pines. But where exactly was the Worcester Park picture painted? The ‘Epsom Road’ at Worcester Park is likely to be today’s London Road between North Cheam and Stoneleigh, but even in 1926 the London Road would surely not have looked quite this peaceful. It seems likely to be a track off the main road, and one possibility is the lane leading to Sparrow Farm. By the mid 19th century,

what we now call Sparrow Farm Road already existed, leading from the London Road to the farm buildings, which seem to have caused it to make the dog-leg diversion that is still a feature of the road. If this is the right location, one might expect to be able to glimpse the farm buildings, but perhaps they were masked by the wood, or Ducker just preferred to omit what he perhaps saw as blots on his idyllic scene. Sparrow Farm was one of the farms into which the Great Park of Nonsuch had been divided in the 17th century. The name may be much older, perhaps a reusing of the medieval name Sparrow Field or Sparwefeld, a large common occupying much of KT4, grazed by livestock owned by villagers from Cuddington, Cheam, Malden and Morden. Nineteenth-century farmers in Cuddington, probably including Sparrow Farm’s tenant, grew wheat, turnips, barley and seeds, and perhaps oats. The crops in the fields when Ducker painted this scene may have been the same that had been grown there since the final years of Nonsuch. The area was transformed very rapidly in the 1930s by the development of the surrounding roads and the construction of the Stoneleigh East schools (now Meadow Primary and Nonsuch Primary), although in Cuddington Recreation Ground, extending northwards from the farmhouse site, we can still see the Beverley Brook that would have appealed to Ducker’s love of landscape. It is priced at £10 (plus £2 towards p&p if required); copies will be on sale at the Heritage Open Day, and can also be bought by phoning 8330 6563. A few weeks later, the church hall and grounds at St Mary’s will be the venue for a Harvest Fayre, on Saturday 6th October from 12 noon until 3pm. Way to help your local hospice Each year St Raphael’s Hospice has an appeal called “Light up a Life”. It enables people to give to the hospice and dedicate the donation to the memory of a loved one. Then at the turning on of the Christmas Tree lights in early December, all those in whose memory donations have been made will be remembered through the lights on the hospice Christmas tree, which shine into the New Year. The public, family and friends, are all welcome to attend the Carol service which this year will be on Sunday 2nd December, 4.30pm outside the hospice in London Road, North Cheam (on the same site as St Anthony’s Hospital). We also produce a special commemorative brochure, which is the “order of service” for the carol service and that is given out on the day to everyone attending and contains the names of everyone being remembered. After that, donations are very welcome, but inclusion in the brochure cannot be guaranteed. The person being remembered does not have to have

been a patient at the hospice or have had any connection with St Raphael’s; all donations will help the hospice to continue to provide its services to local people who are terminally ill – every year over 900 patients and their families are helped. Season of mists and mellow Local author Ruth Jemmett reflects on Autumn The summer of 2012 was a long time in arriving. As we sloshed around in wellies far into July we wondered if the weather would ever improve. Then, at last, the jet stream decided to move north-eastwards, and our damp island began to play catchup. Farmers, who had prayed for sunny days, so that they could eventually make hay, heaved a sigh of relief, and the rest of us peeped out from our sou’westers, with hope in our hearts. The climate of the British Isles has its own very individual personality, and we, in our country of unpredictable weather, have learnt to adapt to its eccentricities! The weather, like our lives, is dependent on various forces beyond our control. We have to trust that things will balance out - and they usually do. As surely as we complain about the constant rain, we will, before long, moan about a drought! The fact that our world has seasons is due to the fact that its axis is tilted, which makes the sun give us patterns of extreme warmth and cold. This creates a yearly cycle of dying and rebirth with our vegetation. Without such a cycle we wouldn’t have the oxygen we breathe. Our lop-sided orbit around the sun is literally our source of life. (We also have a slight wobble in our orbit, called The Chandler’s Wobble - named after its discoverer - but don’t worry, it has always been there, and won’t suddenly send any of us hurtling off the planet!). Those living near the equator have fairly constant sunshine, but it would get a little boring after a time, wouldn’t it?! As the beginning of Autumn commences, we can sometimes feel saddened by the sight of fading flowers and browning leaves, but we should also be gladdened by the sight of Autumnal crops of apples, plums etc. When I was a girl I didn’t like September. Yes, I know that Keats waxed lyrical about it, describing it as “the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” - which, indeed it is - but to me the month symbolised chilly mornings, a drab winter school uniform, and the prospect of having to stand at bus-stops in icy rain. Such negative musings were only tempered by the thought that Christmas was that little nearer! During the summer the residents here in Salisbury Road get to know each other a little better as they emerge into their gardens. (This year some of us were wearing snorkels and flippers!). Plants and gossips are usually swapped in equal quantities as we each lovingly tend our plots. As the warm days melt into autumn’s cooler ones, we treasure the time we have to enjoy our gardens before we once again seek the refuge of our central heating. Many of us have lived here for a very long time, and like the passing seasons, our lives have seen both sunny days and stormy clouds. In an often uncaring larger world, our corner of suburbia is a great comfort. Neighbours have, over time, become good friends. Together we have rejoiced at good news, and mourned together for those we have lost. As the seasons come and go we sustain each other,

and give each other hope and strength for the future. As we gather in the fruit and vegetables of autumn (some more successfully than others!) and sweep away the crisp dying leaves, we count ourselves lucky that the rhythms of our own lives still pulse away. My garden has been ablaze with plants and roses that kind friends and neighbours have given me over the last few months. My lovely next door neighbour and friend (yes, Mary - what a joy you are to live next door to!) gave me tadpoles for my pond in the spring, which have now turned into frogs and toads. The ones that have escaped the beaks of the herons that swoop in regularly from Ewell Court Park, are a delight to see. As the days get shorter these living things are a constant reminder of kindness and friendship. The seasons come and go as relentlessly as our spinning of our planet. As beautiful flowers start to fade in our gardens, it is sometimes hard to believe that they once took our breath away. As smooth petals crease and wither we have to cheer ourselves up by remembering that next year they could look even lovelier. If only we could say the same things about our faces and bodies. Who IS that woman looking back at me from the mirror?!!! Like the world around us we have different seasons in our lives. Some things and some people are right for a particular time. We have lost several much-loved people in our road over the past couple of years, and treasured memories of them live on in our conversations, plants and trees. As we begin to shop for spring bulbs, we know that our gardens and existing neighbours are living reminders of happy times with special people we have known. Each person in our world like a flower or plant - will mature, blossom and then leave us. Each has its season - just as we will have ours. It is not worth worrying about what the future may or may not hold. Whilst we are here let us each enjoy every changing season of our own lives, and appreciate the pleasures and joys of every one of them - and may we all feel younger than springtime in our hearts! Tea Break Gossip! Yvonne, Barbara and Simonne all go to the General Painting and Drawing class on a Thursday morning at the Malden Centre. It’s a friendly group, that exchanges information on everything from adopting hedgehogs to double glazing as well as the best place to buy art materials and opinions on the latest exhibitions. A typical morning might go as follows: Barbara: I didn’t get as much painting done this week as I’d have liked, because I was watching Wimbledon. Simonne: How do the players cope with all the heat and humidity? Tutor: Because they’re young and fit. And they’ll all suffer from arthritis in old age. Yvonne: Not if they do Pilates, they won’t.

For her, too, one of Malden Centre’s attractions is that you don’t have to write a thesis about why you want to study a particular subject, nor meet endless learning goals which bear little relevance to the topic. She wanted activities to keep her brain busy and her body healthy, and Malden Centre provides all of this. Simonne: This violin is really difficult to draw. Yvonne likes Pilates because it makes her feel good, and if she didn’t go to a class she suspects she wouldn’t do it at all. She has been attending classes at the Malden Centre for two years, since she retired – she’s known about the Centre’s existence for a long time. “It feels as though it’s always been there, and my daughter used to attend it for various things…” She’s also been to a class on the history of Surrey, and thinks that one of the big contributing factors towards her enjoyment is how nice everyone is. She enjoys painting watercolours “even if they don’t turn out very well!” and thinks that what she learns in class definitely contributes to what she achieves at home. Barbara does tap dancing as well as art, and she’s progressed from Beginners to Improvers in the space of two terms! She’s done a lot of different forms of dance over the years, including belly dancing (at the Malden Centre), and tap was one she hadn’t tried. Her interest in art stems from the pottery course she did at the Centre, which has its own wheels and kiln; it was then that she decided her pot-painting could do with some improvement. She likes the fact that she can either do the topic suggested by the tutor, or her own thing, and she gets plenty of technical advice. Her work has become more three-dimensional as a result. A real plus in the Centre’s favour is the lack of paperwork the students are required to complete, which means that the tutor’s time is spent on teaching rather than form-filling. Simonne does Spanish and swimming as well as the art class, and she’s done calligraphy in the past. She enjoys Spanish because it’s a small class, with plenty of individual attention. She started art because it was

On the grapevine Aret Kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin on Chilean wine I have a list as long as my arm of places that I want to visit and wine regions that I’d like to explore, with Argentina and Chile featuring at the top of my wish list. Something about Chile’s crisp fruity whites and punchy reds has always been so attractive and it appears that the rest of the UK agrees with me! As of November 2011, the UK replaced the USA as the top importer of bottled Chilean wine in the world, with Chile overtaking South Africa for the first time. In fact, just under one in ten of all bottles of wine sold in the UK are Chilean. Independent wine retailers (as opposed to Supermarkets, pubs and bars) have reported that their customers now purchase more Chilean than French wine, but where did this UK obsession with Chilean wine come from? Chile’s dramatic landscape offers remarkably diverse urban and natural locations, with most regions boasting fertile soil and irrigation water from rivers, which combine to create the ideal conditions for the production of quality wines. Initially, I put its popularity down to its intensely drinkable style and low prices, but far from being considered as just great value, Chilean wine is increasingly being recognized for its unique blend of old world philosophy and innovation, its purity of fruit and its diversity of climate. A new generation of winemakers, are using state-ofthe-art production techniques and facilities, including infrared scanners that aid in matching grape varieties to soil types, resulting in optimum conditions for producing excellent wines. As a multitude of UK restaurants and venues continue to add Chile’s diverse range of varietals and blends to their wine lists, Chile’s profile is

steadily on the rise. After all, one thing that Chile does really well, is a good food wine. Chilean reds are a well known accompaniment to rich meat dishes, but Chilean Sauvignon Blanc with its distinctive crisp acidity is ideal with seafood and salads and is emerging as a UK wine list favourite. It seems that every bar or restaurant in central London will have a Chilean Sauvignon as the house white and honestly, they really are a dependably good choice. Most people are aware that Chile produces fantastic young Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Sauvignon Blancs and even Chardonnays, but less people know about Chile’s rising superstar varietal, Carmenere. The rediscovery of Carmenere in the mid 1990’s created a huge buzz within the wine world. Originally a Bordeaux variety, it was thought to be extinct until tests revealed that many growers in Chile had preserved it, believing the grapes in their vineyards to be Merlot! So perfectly was it suited to the climate, that the grape is now used to create some of Chile’s most distinctive wines. If you haven’t yet experienced a Carmenere and are a fan of Merlot, you will find it to be similar in character, full bodied and rich but with more intensity of dark fruit (blackberries) and with an added kick of black pepper. Next time you order an Indian curry or sit down for a lovely Mexican meal, give Carmenere a go, it’s delicious! Go on, she’s worth it!

Recipe - Lamb and Aubergine Curry This quick curry is so easy to make and much cheaper than a take away. We’ve used lean lamb steaks but you could replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken or turkey. • 3 tbsp sunflower oil • 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes • 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste • 400g sieved tomatoes • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish • Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all

over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil. Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.

TIP You’ll find jars of curry pastes in most supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

Eucalyptus tree management These trees have proved to be very popular in our gardens, this article looks at the characteristics of these trees and the necessary management measures to control the rapid growth rates. The native areas of the world where Eucalyptus trees originate are mainly Australia covering a wide range of species adapted to the contrasting climate from the northern tropics of Queensland to the temperate zone of Tasmania. The tree has a multitude of forms varying from the rounded blue green leaves of a Silver gum to taller Mountain gum with its blue green slender leaves.

These trees are fast growers so caution is necessary when choosing one for your garden, for example the Mountain gum can reach a height of 30m!, lesser heights are achieved with the Spinning gum or Urn gum. The attraction of these trees are the lower density foliage compared to other evergreen trees such as Holly or Bay trees ,in addition the bark of the tree can be very interesting with numerous colour variations possible. The trees do produce a high litter release in the autumn which breaks down very slowly so it is advised to rake up and compost the foliage. The Eucalyptus tree does have 2 key hazards that require monitoring or management. Firstly, the tree has a tendency to drop limbs at random even in low wind conditions!!. To assess the potential threat look for the longer limbs on the tree, it is these branches which create the most movement especially if they have a dense foliage cover creating a large “sail” area to the wind. These limbs can be reduced to growth points drastically reducing the threat of breaking. In an ideal scenario it

Secondly, the stability of the rootplate can create problems especially on clay based soils where a period of persistent rain is followed by windy conditions. Clay based soils create a potential slippage plane between the soil and rootplate base. Eucalyptus trees are characterised by a surfaced based rootplate whereby an extensive width of roots achieves support to the tree as opposed to other tree species that develop a deep root system to carry the weight of the tree mass. Where the centre of mass of your tree is off centre or where the rootplate surface appears to be lifting on one side of the tree then get a qualified arborist to do a free inspection for you. A Lower Slower World – The New Normal? After ten years of fat, welcome to the ten years of lean. The good news is that we are three years in: the bad news is that we still have probably another seven years to go. So welcome to the ‘New Normal’ of lower slower growth, where both government and personal debt is slowly unwound and investment returns seem miserly. In effect, we are living through a period of financial repression, where the usual rules of risk and return have changed. So what can investors do? In real terms, investors in government bonds or cash deposits are losing value after taking account of inflation, and mattress stuffing is not to be recommended. The answer still lies in a well balanced portfolio of

Now though, in the puritan world of the ‘New Normal’, returns are going to be meagre and sparse and costs, once hidden, now stick out like rocks from the sea, ready to rip out the value from unwary investment portfolios. Time then for some serious redesigning of portfolios to strip out unnecessary costs, without losing the vital structure and discipline of a well constructed investment account. Over the past few years, the introduction of various types of passives - be they Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in all their various forms, or Trackers - have provided a lower cost access for investment managers. Previously the preserve of the institutional investment world, they have broken out into the air of greater popular awareness. However, this is just the start. Firstly, look to the trading and dealing. A good dealer can narrow or get inside the spread, a better dealer will locate the right market to find a better price (for example Paris). Then there is the power of scale which can be beneficial - size counts. Initially, this may be in terms of negotiating a better Annual Management Charge (AMC) for the fund where

The Harpist Of Madrid, Six Months On by Gordon Thomas

I’m 67, a retired Home Office scientist and live with my wife, Janet, in Worcester Park. Back in February, Jenny published an article in Worcester Park Life about my then recently published novel, The Harpist of Madrid. My outrageous book has a bit of everything in it: love, intrigue, scandal, death, insanity, The Spanish Inquisition, espionage, and more. I thought that, once in print, the book would sell without much help from me. But how wrong could I be. Although Olympia, my publisher, sent out many press releases and put it on the internet, I’ve really had to do my bit. So I decided to start local. First, and with a little trepidation, I rang the local newspapers to see if they’d run an article. I struck lucky almost straight away. A lady in the ‘Surrey Comet’ said she’d write something and interviewed me over the ’phone. Next a photographer arrived and the witty article appeared. Several other newspapers followed suit and from

these, a number of local organisations asked me to give a presentation about the book. So I gladly talked to the Sutton Nonsuch, the Cheam and the New Malden Rotary Clubs; a book club; and the Ashtead Tangent Club. I’ve since lined up five future talks, including one for the Cheam WI and another at Motspur Park Library. Then I spoke to some independent book shops. They were so helpful. The Regency Bookshop in Surbiton decided to stock it, so did the Cobham bookshop and then Barton’s Bookshop in Leatherhead and, most recently, The Ibis Bookshop in Banstead. Next, I plucked up enough courage to go into W H Smith’s in Sutton to ask the manager if he’d be interested in a book signing. He was delighted that I’d stepped in: Simon hadn’t done a signing for nearly a year. So within a few weeks, Janet and I were pestering customers there to buy one. In that heady day we sold twenty five copies. Simon was so thrilled put me in touch with his local W H Smith colleagues who’ve asked me to do a signing for them. I’ve done four up to now! Boosted by my new found confidence, I tried the local Waterstones and sure enough, I’ve now lined up two signings with them, in Sutton and in Kingston. Oh, and I’ve done one for Barton’s in Leatherhead. I’m totally overwhelmed to say that to date and altogether, Olympia Publishers and I have sold over 600 copies of my novel, which is now in its second print. I’d never have guessed that it would go so well! I’m sure that my blog www.theharpistofmadrid.com has helped. So have some nice reviews on www.amazon.co.uk, the newspaper articles, generous friends - many at Malden Golf Club - and relatives, and, of course, my piece in February’s Worcester Park Life. My latest ideas for selling the novel are: to go national, to get it translated - into Spanish - and to sell the film rights. Well, I can dream, can’t I?

Clubs Cheam Common Art Group has has been in existence for over 50 years. It was originally founded by mothers of pupils attending Cheam Common School, Balmoral Road, following a display of pupils’ art work, at which time the mothers professed on interest in taking up painting themselves. It was suggested by Mr. Heath, the then Art Master at the school, that they started a group themselves, this they did and it has continued to this day meeting weekly. One of the founder members was Mrs. Joan Avery who was a well-known local artist who specialised in paintings of birds, butterflies and botanical pictures. In earlier years the Group was flourishing and had around 30/40 members but of recent times the numbers have diminished to around 12/13 members. We try to encourage interest in a programme of different aspects of painting and drawing and have occasionally had a guest speaker or demonstrator. We provide coffee during the evening and all encourage each other in our work. During the summer break when we do not meet we try to arrange sketching outings to local venues and sometimes farther afield to NT properties or villages in Surrey. Each year we hold an exhibition of work –

this gives us a goal to work for – the last one was in April in the Ebbisham Centre in Epsom, this is to be repeated next year. During August we took part in “Worcester Park Library Art Scheme which had a display in one of the vacant local shops. We are a friendly older group but we always welcome and encourage new younger members. We are in need of new members so anyone who is interested in becoming a member should contact Brenda Banks on 020 8330 0928 or come along and meet us – we would be delighted to meet you. News September brings a busy time to Royal British Legion Club in Worcester Park with our in house competiton winners receiving their trophies and also Surrey Darts present theirs as well. Malden Emergency First Aid Society (MEFAS) With over 44 years of voluntary service to the community, this fantastic local organisation consists solely of volunteers The Kingston Upon Thames Civil Defence Corps was based in New Malden and when the Corps was disbandment in 1968 the volunteers formed MEFAS. Later that year the National Voluntary Civil Aid Services (NVCAS) was formed consisting of over 200 former Civil Defence groups. MEFAS continued to represent Kingston Upon Thames and became a Civil Aid Unit. With this dual role, MEFAS specialised in providing First Aid training to the public whilst its members trained in light rescue and disaster recovery techniques. Today, MEFAS is still based in New Malden having moved from behind the old Town Hall to Blagdon Road and, after giving up its own premises allow the swimming pool to be built, moved into the rear of the Malden Centre. Though the Malden Centre was built over 20 years ago, research has found that the population of New Malden and Kingston Upon Thames generally, are not aware of the services that MEFAS offers or where it is based. MEFAS’s management committee decided to change its image (new logos) and activities. In future, MEFAS will be offering more commercial courses eg Emergency First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid and, CPR and AED, which are either HSE compliant or certified Life Long Learning skills Levels 1 and 2. Due to new regulations brought in by the Quality Care Commission which covered ambulances used for First Aid cover at events in the same manner as a fleet of front line ambulances, it was decided to part with the MEFAS ambulance. The registration fee of £1,500 and usage restriction meant it was no longer on cost effective to maintain an ambulance. Nevertheless, MEFAS continues to provide First Aid cover at events using hirers own or mobile facilities. For example, providing First Aid cover at the Kingston’s Active Sports day at the market placed held on 19 August. MEFAS is now a small organisation and welcomes new members. If new members are not found , in sufficient numbers the Charity will either fold or be subsumed into another charity within the next 10 years. It was decided that MEFAS should specialise in promoting MEFAS as a

commercial training organisition and MEFAS trainers choose to qualifying with NUCO Training Plus and First Aid Awards. Surpluses from commercial training will be used to support initiatives in the borough to promote first aid training in schools, Children Centres and awareness that MEFAS can be found at the rear of the Malden Centre. The Better Life The Better Life is the tales and observations of a London townie, who downshifted to Cornwall. A bit like the Good Life, but with the internet. It all started one morning in the kitchen, when Anne asked, “How would you feel about keeping chickens?” I didn’t answer right away. In the time we’ve been together I’ve learned the language of subtext. I finished my breakfast and replied, “When are we picking them up?” I wasn’t entirely averse to the idea of a little selfsufficiency. Who doesn’t have fond memories of The Good Life - and especially Felicity Kendal? Plus it’d be a chance to shed my townie upbringing and dispel that grim story my dad used to tell - the one about dispatching a chicken for the first and only time, where the head came off in in his hands and the headless chicken ran up the path. Stage one in Operation Chickadee was researching coops and chicken feed and, well, chickens really. There’s a lot to learn about chicken behaviour, the different breeds and their foibles. Having taken advice, we decided on hybrids, as they’re more reliable for eggs and point-oflay birds for immediate production. We went upmarket with the coop, choosing an easy care metal and plastic affair from Omlet (yes, really!). Now all we needed to do was find the right chickens - and Anne was already on the case. The day after the chicken coop and run were installed in the front garden, we entered the mysterious world of farm supplies. Layers pellets, grit (for strong shells), straw and worming treatment - check. However, my suggestion that we buy jodhpurs as well fell on stony ground. Having located a poultry supplier, we headed out with an empty cat box and a pile of newspaper. The farmer led us to a densely populated barn and said, “Take your pick.” I don’t know exactly how Anne chose the chickens - which the farmer insisted were hens - but we went home with Sweet Pea (a Plymouth Rock / Maran) and Pepperami (a Plymouth Rock / Rhode Island). The chickens were confined to barracks for a few days, to allow them to settle in and retrain the cat. Once they emerged, we noted the following: At least an egg a day! A huge reduction in the snail population. Sweet Pea failed to live up to her name, went broody and took it out on the cat (luckily it’s a very fast cat). The garden quickly came to resemble The Somme. Something had to be done because, unlike me, Anne is a passionate gardener. Plus, the round up in the evenings was time consuming. We fenced off one half of the garden and, after a few ‘great escapes’, augmented the fencing with

extra bamboo canes in leaf, whereupon the chickens looked as if they were starring in their own episode of Tenko. Sweet Pea and Pepperami were both restful to watch and very entertaining. They performed chicken yoga wing stretching exercises. They played tug-of-war with snails and ‘I’ll have what she’s having’ tussles over worms, morning porridge and, on one unfortunate occasion, a wood mouse. Our neighbours relish the availability of fresh, local eggs and they enjoy the egg-laying serenade every morning. And the poultry poop makes great compost. Voice for wildlife Worcester Park’s own Carol Williams loves wonderful insects and amazing plants Insects are vital little creatures for all life on this planet. Without them our whole ecosystem would collapse. The complex connections between insects and plants are fragile and often completely misunderstood by most of us and so we destroy wild places unthinkingly, with no idea what the ramifications of these losses might be until some disaster occurs. We need to learn to tread more lightly, to respect Nature, not try to eradicate it. Our planet would survive and function very nicely without us, but without insects and plants, it could not support any animal life. The area around Shadbolt Park pond has been left wild to increase biodiversity. In tangles of bramble, nettle, ivy and thistle, long grasses and wild flowering plants, our

essential native insects play out many stages of their lives, and it is the seed heads and fruits of these plants (aka ‘weeds’) that feed our small birds : the decline of so many species, including sparrows, is directly related to the disappearance of hedgerows, woodland edges and arable ‘weeds’ ,and the insects that pollinate them. The plants we are allowing to flourish in Shadbolt Park are encouraging several species of moth and butterfly. Recently seen there were: 6 Spot Burnet moths feeding on the nectar of thistle flowers, and Ringlet, Red Admiral and Gatekeeper butterflies. Some of the wild flowers growing there are Common Toadflax , Bristly Oxtongue and Enchanter’s Nightshade Ringlets like a tall grassland habitat in damp situations and their favourite nectar sources are Bramble and Wild Privet flowers. Gatekeepers (aka Hedge Browns) like tall grassland close to hedgerows or scrub and feed on various grasses. Red Admirals enjoy any flower rich habitat and also orchards where rotting fruit is left on the ground. Common toadflax has a long history ot herbal use which makes fascinating reading - google it!

Enchanter’s Nightshade is a woodland plant that gets its name from the enchantress Circe of Greek myth - she used it in her magic. It is not related to Deadly Nightshade. Bristly Oxtongue grows in shingle and on cliffs, as well as field and road edges. It is a prickly herb that flowers in June to November, providing useful nectar for insects that are still active in the Autumn. Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving Unexpected callers There have been a number of incidents recently where criminals have been knocking on doors and conning their way into vulnerable people’s homes saying they are from a utility company eg: Water, Electricity or Gas board and want to check equipment. Genuine Utility companies will seldom call at your address without an appointment, other than to read a meter and they should always present their ID. So what do you do? How do you deal with unknown and unexpected callers - including rogue builders? Our advice is: ‘If in doubt, keep them out’. Here’s a three step action plan for when/if you get a knock at your door: 1. STOP…. Are you expecting anyone? Look through the

spy hole or window to see who it is. Only allow those people into your home who you know or expect, regardless of what excuses they give you in order to enter. 2. CHAIN…. Before you answer the door, put the chain or bar on first. 3. CHECK…. Always request and check identification. Most genuine callers won’t mind waiting while you check the phone book and call the company they say they are from. If you are suspicious of any callers then keep them shut out and call police on 999. Here’s another thing worth considering. Sutton’s crime prevention team run a ‘Nominated Neighbour Scheme’, where residents can get help from a neighbour when they get unexpected callers. Participating residents present callers with a card that contains the name and address of their Nominated Neighbour. Callers then contact the Nominated Neighbour, who would then verify that the caller is genuine. If the caller is genuine, the Nominated Neighbour would return with the caller to the resident’s home and stay until the visit had finished. By this time bogus callers may have given up and left. For further information call 101 and ask for your local Crime Prevention Team.

The Evil Weevil by Pippa Greenwood

The vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) will always feature in any gardening poll of ‘top pests’. They’re an immensely successful pest; there are only females and each one is capable of laying about 1,000 eggs during the summer. If you have them in your garden, whether you like it or not, you probably need to get to know better. How Do You Know You Have Vine Weevils? The adult vine weevil is just under 1cm long, matt black with tiny gingery brown flecks on its wing-cases. They’re a classic weevil shape with elbowed antennae and a phenomenal ability to grip on to nearly any surface. You’re likely to notice the notches around the leaf margins before you see the weevil. They tend to feed in the evening or at night, usually on the lower, most accessible leaves. The young stage weevils or grubs are about 1cm long, creamy white in colour and often curled into a ‘C’ shape, with no legs but a gingery brown head.You’ll find them in the compost or soil, close to the roots or tubers that they’ve been feeding on. Unless you’re removing a plant you’re unlikely to notice the grubs; it’s when a plant suddenly starts to wilt or die, or you realise that something is no longer firmly rooted that alarm bells should begin to ring. What Do Vine Weevils Attack? Vine weevils will attack nearly any plant you try to grow, particularly in containers. They’re a greater problem on perennial plants and those with fleshier roots or tubers. The adult beetles emerge mostly between March and May, but also at other times in greenhouses. The eggs are dark brown, less than 1mm diameter and are placed close to a suitable host plant. The eggs hatch to produce the creamy coloured grubs which feed and grow until they reach full size. What Can You Do? Try to avoid getting vine weevils in the first place. Check plants, including their roots, carefully for foliage damage before introducing anything new to your garden. Avoid re-using compost in containers as it might contain grubs or eggs, which are impossible to spot. As vine weevils can’t fly, making barriers is relatively easy. Put a ring of non-setting glue around the rim of containers, use a gritty mulch to reduce the number of eggs that are laid and hatch and try creating miniature moats around the legs of greenhouse staging, by standing each leg in a bowl of water.Vine weevils can’t swim and won’t be able to access the plants provided the staging doesn’t touch the sides of the greenhouse. I’m a fan of the biological nematode controls. They’re

available from mail order suppliers (including www. pippagreenwood.com) and seed catalogues and are applied as a compost or soil drench. To work effectively, keep the area moist, so that the nematodes can move through the compost to attack the grubs, entering their bodies and producing a bacterial infection to kill them. The nematode controls need to have a soil or compost temperature of 5-21C and work best during August and September.
