Dear Readers
September can be a funny month…marking the end of the summer but also celebrating many new beginnings, with the annual “back to school” for hundreds of our children across the Borough (not to mention teachers, who are hopefully feeling refreshed after the summer break and of course all those parents, patiently queuing up for shiny new shoes, replenishing pencil cases and frantically labeling up every item of said new kit!). September also marks the time of year when many of our local teenagers are packing up their bedrooms and saying their farewells to parents, siblings and old school friends as they think about heading off to university (whether for the first time or returning to their now familiar ‘second home’ mid-way through a course) It’s an exciting time that brings a lump to the throats of many mums (and dads!) as well as a great feeling of pride…but don’t worry, college terms are still pretty short (there was a reason it was the best time of our lives!) and they’ll all be back home before you know it (probably in time for the grand switching of the Christmas Lights!) As much as I LOVE the summer (the long, lazy and light evenings, the BBQs, drinks in the garden, holidays and the general feeling of life slowing down a gear for a few weeks), there’s also something pretty special about the onset of Autumn. Living where we do (with Beverley, Nonsuch and Richmond Parks so close by) we’re very fortunate to be able to witness the gradual change of colours and to feel the crisp Autumn air whilst out walking the dog or perhaps going for a run or cycle (and maybe even clinging onto a bit of warm sunshine with a last minute “Indian Summer” that we’ve seen over the past few years). Harvest Celebrations will be upon us soon…although I’ve got mixed feelings about some of the produce coming off our family allotment at the moment! If there was a category for the most misshapen potato at a local harvest fair, then I reckon the Stuart family would be in with a chance of a trophy. Hmmm, how about my readers sharing their photos of the funniest fruit and veg (home grown in Worcester Park of course!) Now, maybe that’s an idea for the October issue of Worcester Park Life…. So, I’ve leave you with that thought as well as taking this opportunity to wish you all a “Super September”, whatever you’re up to! And, once again, lots of luck to all of our youngsters starting school for the first time, moving onto Secondary School or embarking on a great new adventure at college, University, first job or apprenticeship! Enjoy it and embrace it! Best wishes,
Jenny

Worcester Park History
Altos, authors and oranges by David Rymill
In the 1930s hundreds of newlymarried couples moved to the houses being built in Worcester Park. This month we mark the passing in February 2015, at the age of 98, of Kath Cove, who moved with her husband Bernard on their marriage in 1937 to a new house in Fairford Gardens built by John Cronk’s firm Cuddington Estates, and who shared some of her memories with me some years ago. After fruitless house-hunting elsewhere, they had seen an advertisement for Worcester Park in the Evening News; they visited the development and chose a newly-built house. It cost ‘about £695, and our repayments were £1 a week – 16s 11d was the mortgage and the other 3s and a penny was rates; it was a good-sized house for the price.’ The kitchen had ‘a working top with cupboards underneath’, and there were coal fires and, in the bedrooms, built-in gas fires. Not far from the top of the road, The Parade in Vale Road provided ‘a butcher’s, a greengrocer’s, and a wool shop – Florence’ and a grocer’s soon arrived. In the 1930s Kath worked for the London office of literary agents Curtis Brown, located near the Strand, and met many authors that they represented, including A A Milne. ‘I went at 16, and sometimes if an author came in and one of the magazines wanted an urgent article I would have to take it onto the typewriter from her dictating it. Miss [Nancy] Pearn, who was in charge of the short story section, was friendly with Dorothy Sayers’; the latter ‘was a wonderful person, with flowing clothes, and I used to have to serve her with China tea. We did Gone with the Wind – that was exciting, that came in and the readers were showing it to each other saying “Look at this”.’ Kath soon became an active member of St Mary’s Cuddington, at the top of The Avenue, and in 1950
6
became one of the first altos in the choir, in which she sang for over half a century. The choirboys, unused to hearing an alto line, ‘looked round and thought we were singing the wrong tune.’ The organist at the time was Garth Long, later a vicar in Hampshire. ‘His wife and I started the Choir Supper. There was only the old church hall [on the site of the present church car park], and we did sausage and mash in that little kitchen, just for the choir, and then it got bigger and other people were invited, and it became the Harvest Supper’. In 1955 a larger hall was built on the corner of Royal Avenue, and Kath and Bernard ran Old Time Dances with Muriel and Vic Rushton; ‘we had a gramophone; once a month we’d get a band in.’ Our illustration shows the choir at St Mary’s in c1968, photographed by Cheam Studio; Kath Cove is 4th from the right in the centre row, next to the Vicar, the Revd John Atkins. We know the names of almost all the adults, but none of the boys: if you recognise yourself or anyone else, please let me know. The choir continues to flourish, and welcomes new members; practices are held on Thursday evenings: if you are interested, please contact the Director of Music, Michael Burt, at michaelburt4@gmail.com or the Parish Office on (020) 8337 4026. Kath came from Peckham, and Bernard had lived at Tooting and Hornsey; they had met through scouting and guiding – having been to breakfast together following a march-past at the

Cenotaph. At this time there were no Girl Guides at Cuddington, and in 1943 Mrs Betty Wysehall decided ‘she would like to start a Guide Company. We had a Deaconess at that time [Elsie Robbins] and I was telling her I’d taken Guides in London, and I’d taken a Brownie pack under the arches at Waterloo, real Cockney kids, so she went straight back to tell Mrs Wysehall and she was round there like a shot – so we both started it. She had three children and I had two, and we said we wouldn’t be able to do camps, but of course soon we did do camps, and our husbands were very good.’ 1st Cuddington’s earliest camps were held at Mickleham and elsewhere in Surrey. ‘When they were older we took them to Italy [probably in the 1950s]. We went to Naples, and Rome, and Florence, youth-hostelling round Italy – we used to get buses or trains to the next place. At every station we had a special pass we had to show to the keeper, and he would go and pick oranges for the girls and make a great fuss of them; when they got back to Dover they said, “Oh dear, there’s nobody here to pick us an orange”.’
Kath recalls the early summer fairs organised by St Mary’s, initially held in the Vicarage garden, and known as garden parties. The event grew in scale, and Kath joined a social committee which ran it. In 1953 it was decided to change venue ‘and we went to Parker’s Field [in Royal Avenue]; we had to carry water and everything else over there, but it was very good.’ This year St Mary’s Cuddington (www.cuddingtonparish.org.uk) is holding a Harvest Fayre in the church grounds on Saturday 10th October, 12 noon-3pm. There will be stalls selling homemade cakes, books, toys and crafts including hand-stitched cards and knitted toys, and a chance to buy wood-turned items made in the parish, plus sideshows and refreshments. Entry will be by donation. Before that, the church will be running a bookstall and refreshments, and providing a chance to share memories, see old photographs, discuss links with St Mary’s past, present and future, and help make a banner, at the ‘Tri-Fest’ event at Auriol Park in Salisbury Road, on Sunday 13th September, 12 noon-4pm, which is being organised by the three Residents’ Associations of Cuddington, Ewell Court, and Stoneleigh and Auriol and will include over 50 stalls, displays and activities (entry free). Also on 13th September, at 9.30am, St Mary’s will be trying out an informal ‘café church’ in the hall adjoining the church – all are welcome. Community The Friends of Worcester Park Library Garden On Saturday 8th August 2015 the Worcester Park Library Garden was officially opened. We had organic vegetables from the local allotments in our raffle, a wish tree for children and adults, tea, coffee, juice and biscuits for the community. Our local hero retired Major Relph Rickard cut the ribbon and declared the garden open. Major Relph Rickard fought in WWII and was named after his uncle Relph (a family name spelt with an “e”) who died in WW1 at 21. In January 2013 the project began when Relph and I attended the Mayor’s Buffet and spoke of the idea to local Councillors, I was asked to put the idea down on paper. I did a plan of a garden area, an aerial view of the existing library and car park area, reasons for the garden and Relph drew a sketch of the area. In February 2013 the idea was put forward to the OLF (Outer London Fund) but we were told that it was too late and maybe another time. In March I was approached by the Council and encouraged to apply for a grant through the local participatory budget grants. This was the chance to get the garden project up and running. I had also been told of the London Mayor’s Pocket Park scheme grants. In May a presentation for £5,000 was presented to the local people and Councillors and we came in second out of 15 applicants. We were awarded £5,000 to start the library garden project. Relp takes a trip up to Planning to see if Planning is required or not for this project. In August I had a meeting with the Waitrose Manager Simon Cuzner who liked the idea of a garden for the community. Simon agreed to the project but reduced the initial size of the project as this involved taking too many parking spaces away. Applied for the London Mayor’s Pocket Parks grant but was not successful. In September the Friends of Worcester Park library had new plans drawn up and held a coffee morning for everyone to show the plans and get the community involved either with helping in the garden or donations. A Garden Proposal was written which was to stand as a document with all details and questions answered for the project. In October The WI came on board and offered help from the garden club regarding maintenance In February 2014 Waitrose agreed to help on the finance of the garden and offered up to £20,000 in match funding In March 2014 We had our first Planning meeting as to whether the project needed Planning Permission and we applied for the Mayors Grant and now it was a waiting game as to whether we could take this project to the next level? During the next few months there were several meetings,

emails, phone calls as each time a problem or questions arose we needed to have answers and keep on top as this project was more complex than we originally thought. In April second presentation given for the £5,000 grant money. In July I had notification from The London Mayor that we were successful in our application and they would be awarding us £17,000 for the garden project. In August due to Council cut backs I had a meeting with Stephanie Crossley who came to tell me that the project could not go ahead. After a presentation she decided to go away and try to find a solution to the project. After a few emails we finally had a meeting with Planning. In September - Planning meeting In October - meetings In November - Meeting at City Hall the London Mayor’s Office. In December Meeting with Waitrose, the Council, Landscape Architect and the Friends January 2015 – Planning Permission applied for. Emails/ calls with Waitrose regarding match funding and funds were transferred in to friends bank account. Emails to the Mayor’s office as we had already had an extension on the project due to the delay with Planning. February Planning permission agreed along with Planning conditions. March More grants applied for as money short for project. Emergency friends meeting regarding committee vote as to whether we could raise funds for 5 years to maintain project. Meeting with the Contractor Warwick Landscapes. April Awaiting to see if the Council would accept the liability for the garden area. Awaiting approval of Management plan to be approved by Planning. Third presentation done for the £5,000 Participatory grant the Mayor’s Office requires the formal document/lease from the council and a bank statement of proof that we have Waitrose £17,000 match funding in the bank. Coffee morning open to all who may wish to come and ask questions or join in on our community project. May Still waiting on liability to be agreed by the Council. The leases to be surrendered from Waitrose back to the Council. Local committee grant applied for June Liability accepted by the Council. Planning Conditions (Management Plan) now approved. Final part of garden - Surrender of leases from Waitrose back to the Council. Friends to sign the licence and Contact the Mayor’s

Office for a third extension to the project. Work begins on Tuesday 30th June 2015 – Work complete Wednesday 29th July ahead of schedule. As you can see this project had over two and a half years of work and there was many a long day and several obstacles in the last few weeks and still the concern that this project may not go ahead. There were countless emails, phone calls and several presentations required. Success, we got there! I would like to thank several people along the way who contributed to this project. The Mayor’s Office for having faith in this project and extending our grant three times for an extra 12months in total. Laura Williams and Nicola Murphy for their understanding and help along the way. Waitrose Simon Cuzner the Manager who had faith and supported the project from start to finish. The match funding of £17,000 that was given. Michael Finnegan, Matt Sinfield and Jason Stanley the legal, accounts and temporary Manager at Worcester Park. The Friends committee old and new members for staying with the project and fighting for open space for the community. Angela Weallans, Pauline Collier, Major Relph Rickard, Marjorie Gibbons, Sue Evans, Teresa Terrazas & Alice Cronk Rhona Harley – The Landscape Architect who was professional, efficient, caring and also passionate about this project. The Library staff past and present who have supported this project from start to finish. Kathy English the library Manager whose last minute running around came up trumps for the final preparations. Praveen Manghani Libraries Assistant Manager who gave support and help with the library garden. Sheila Swann who gave me direction when I thought it was all over. Who told me to get up there and do my presentation, that it was my last chance and to give them impact. This is what I did and got the long awaited Planning meeting. Ideas for the wish tree and shears to cut the ribbon. Cllr Richard Broadbent for coming on board and turn the project around once again Cllr Sam Bourne for help with the finer details with the
Planning. The Worcester Parkers WI for donations of money, cakes, bunting and a weekend Planting day for the Official Opening. Sue Harris, Dee Davis, Sue Hostler, Jackie & Steve Whitefield, Sue Osbourne, Tacey Wilkins and Wendy Sumner. The Craft Club- Jane Honney and the girls who have given the project continued support and help with the bunting and are welcome to have their craft fairs in the garden, probably just in the summer. Jane Francis for her fabulous cake . To all my friends who have been supportive and encouraged me, who listened to my frustrations and kept me up there with their support and confidence in me. Lisa Ewing Adams & Richard Adams who was a great support and helped with the preparations in the morning. My friend from school who is my family. Steve my neighbour, who cut the wish tree logs, got the hose working and the PA System. Ray, Doug, Angela and Jonathan from the local allotments who gave organic produce for the raffle. A friend at the Legion who gave £100 A WI member gave £100 The WI gardening club gave their £65 kitty money Colin at Redgwell Sewing machines £50 £500 from Schwing Stetter Mr Sumner £200 Alleyne & Ian plant donations for the Official Opening The Bingo/Lunch Club – Joyce Houghton for her famous lemon drizzle cake and Pauline King for helping with the raffle and the laughs on the day. Warwick Landscapes for a professional job, finishing ahead of schedule and a hose donation to water the garden. Sheila Patrone who gave support and help on the day. For all support letters sent to the Council and those of you that took the time to come to the library’s coffee morning and let us know your thoughts and comments. Last but not least my thanks, love and appreciation go to Relph the Major. Relph drew sketches for the garden to help with the first presentation, seen potential and directed me and put me on the right track when I felt I was at a dead end. Note: Parking spaces at the beginning of this project was 196, now there are 197 in the Waitrose car park. With the recycling area being taken away we gained three spaces and we took two for the project. The disabled spaces have been relocated. I would just like to say that if you have ever considered doing voluntary work? When I got involved with the friends over 5 years ago my whole world changed. To give is one thing but what you received back is so much more. Fabulous friendships have been made along the way and I hope that they continue to bloom in the same way Worcester Park Library Garden does. Nelson Mandela “It always seems impossible until its done” Thank you Jackie Frost – Chairperson Friends of Worcester Park Library

NEW BEGINNINGS
AUTUMN MARKET
September arrives to a collective sigh of relief amongst parents of school aged children. Holidays are wonderful, bringing with them a release from early morning starts, clock watching and rushed packed lunch preparation, but by the end of August most children are very ready for a return to routine and itching to see their school friends again.
In previous years property prices have tended to rise in the spring and remain steady through the Autumn. This year we have seen a rise of approx. 5%-10% over a six month period, depending on the property type, with record prices being achieved well into the summer. Whether prices will continue to rise through to the end of 2015 is unclear but indications are that the market will remain strong as August, often a quieter Some of our own children are starting at month, remained busy. new schools or progressing to sixth form and for Sandra, one of our valuers, whose Less committed buyers tend to put their little one starts in reception this year, its a search on hold at the start of the summer completely new experience. Ruth Jemmett Writes The frosty kiss of autumn Ruth Jemmett Muses On The Month Of September
It seems that it was only yesterday when I was wandering around garden centres in the Spring, choosing plants to fill my troughs and hanging baskets. How I prayed for the sunny days that would encourage my Petunias and Bizzy Lizzies to grow more than a few inches high. My prayers were surely answered. The sun eventually arrived, and those same plants are now enormous and magnificently colourful, with their stems snaking in all directions, as they make a huge growth spurt before the first night frosts of September render them weak and pale. When the poet Henry Van Dyke wrote The Frosty Kiss Of Autumn, his description captured the time when a chill night can obliterate months of beauty and perfume. There is something sad about pruning at this time of the year. My once eye-catching baskets now look distinctly apologetic, and my once stunning roses are becoming shadows of their former selves - rather like glamorous film stars who are past their hey-day, with veins standing out, and their blush fading. This is surely the time to start buying spring bulbs, and to start imagining how even more stunning our suburban retreat will look next year! After recent heavy showers the conifers decided to turn into unstructured Triffids, so now is the time to contact the gardeners who tame them before the weather turns ugly. My newly acquired raspberry cage was my star purchase this year, and my freezer is now crammed with its luscious fruit. I have two large buddleia bushes in my garden. These plants are often referred to as The Butterfly Bush, as butterflies love their nectar. I have enjoyed spending sunnier days taking photographs of butterflies, and will send you towards the cooler Autumn days with a pretty ‘photo I took of a Comma that conveniently posed for me while it preened itself! September was the seventh month of the Roman calendar, and its name is derived from the Latin
word for ‘seven’, which is ‘septem’. The Romans considered it to be the month of fire, as they celebrated the god Vulcan at this time of year. I was wandering around the internet, wondering how other cultures celebrated this month, and you might be interested to know that, for reasons best known to the Americans (who seem to celebrate the existence of just about everyone and everything), this is also Potato Month, Chicken Month, Piano Month, and

Biscuit Month. As far as I am concerned, Biscuit Month applies to every month of the year, as I am sure that my passion for Sainsbury’s Shortie Biscuits keeps the firm going! As Autumn takes a hold, children return to school after their seemingly never-ending summer holiday. When I attended my junior school I used to love the fact that we were going into the season of playing ‘conkers’, using the fruits of the Horse Chestnut tree. The boys at my school took this ‘sport’ very seriously, with some of them asking their mothers to slightly roast the chestnuts, or paint them with clear varnish to strengthen them. I am sure that there were many minor accidents in those days, caused by misdirected conkers hitting children on the head, but we somehow survived. In these days of Health and Safety, some schools have banned the game. Others have given it the go-ahead, only allowing it if children wear protective clothing. Goodness knows how my generation survived playing marbles, chewing bubble gum, or tattooing themselves with oldfashioned pen nibs soaked in ink! We all lived to tell the tale. The ritual of Harvest Thanksgiving is still alive and well in churches and schools throughout the country. I can remember searching through my food cupboards many years ago, so that I could contribute edibles to my son’s school. Such foodstuffs were distributed to local old people’s homes. I remember the time I gave him twenty tins of sardines, (well, they WERE in date, and were piling up at an alarming rate …), and I wondered if the teachers might think that his mother was a penguin! I was recently mulling through my old diaries. (We writers start scribbling down our thoughts from our earliest years, whether people want to know about them or not!), and I realised that one of my favourite songs during my teens involved the month of September. The singer-songwriter Carole King, and Gerry Goffin, had composed “It Might As Well Rain Until September” when I was sixteen. They wrote it for the then popular American pop idol, Bobby Vee, whose glossy photograph adorned my bedroom wall. I still have that ‘45’ Record (as they were then known), along with a few dozen other recording antiques!. (Many years later I went to see him perform at Wimbledon Theatre, and suddenly felt very old when I realised that his adult son was part of his backing band!)
14
It is exactly fifty years(in 1965) ago that the dress designer Mary Quant, launched the ’miniskirt’ on the world. In 1966 I summoned up enough courage to wear one to an office where I worked. It was strawberry pink, and as I tottered along on my fashionable ’winkle-picker’ high heels (in all of my 5’ 8” glory) I am sure that I looked just like an ungainly stork! Youngsters might think that they are very daring regarding their fashions nowadays, but I promise you that our generation have seen it all before! In those far off days I regularly wore giant false eyelashes to parties, and could create a minitornado if |I blinked., and my friends and I were sporting ‘eye-flicks’ at the corners of our peepers long before Kate Moss was born! Music lovers will be more than aware that the summer months are when The Proms take place at The Royal Albert Hall, culminating in the world famous Last Night in mid-September. There is something quintessentially British about the sight of hundreds of people waving flags, and singing patriotic songs. Yes, of course it’s jingoistic, and is probably totally out of step with our multi-cultural society, but it is always guaranteed to send you to bed with a smile on your face! The 23rd of September is the time of The Autumnal Equinox, which means that it will only be a month before we have to turn the clocks back. Before we know it The Frosty Kiss of Autumn will be turning into The Chilly Claw of Winter. Now is the time to get the central heating checked, the duvet changed over to a warmer Tog, and to get those Ugg Boots out. Yes, of course we might have an ‘Indian Summer’, but I wouldn’t bank on it! Clubs Hogsmill Square Dance Club – When The Midwife Called Us! Hogsmill Square Dance Club comprises of over 70 members dancing in and around this area. The club was started 4 years ago when Granville, a Square Dance caller, and his wife Wendy moved to Worcester Park and started teaching Square Dancing from scratch. Square dancing involves teamwork as it takes 8 people to make up a square and the Caller leads the dancers through the movements carefully making sure everybody understands. The great thing is that there are no long dance routines to learn – just the individual moves. The more moves you learn the more interesting it gets and the more fun everyone has - and of course the greatest fun is had when things go a bit wrong! Sometimes Square Dancing begins with a woman dragging her male partner to a beginners’ class for the first time, but he races her to the next session. Why is that? Because square dancing is just plain FUN and fortunately, for us dance-challenged men, the Caller tells you exactly what to do! In fact Square dancing is great fun for couples, singles and families, providing an interactive social evening for all. You needn’t worry about having two left feet – anybody can Square Dance as the movements are very simple and rhythmical – the hardest thing is knowing your left from your right – which is not as easy as it may seem! Square dancing provides a low impact activity that typically burns 280 calories per hour, and can improve cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and stamina. It combines physical and mental stimulation for people of all ages and provides a “well being” effect as you join in with other people and make new friends. All the moves are easy to learn with everybody helping each other along the way – it is often called fun and friendship set to music. This music being drawn from a wide range of tastes including new and classic pop, jazz, country and western, rock and roll etc. When “Call the Midwife” decided to feature Square Dancing in their programme they contacted Hogsmill Squares for advice and experienced dancers. We spent a lovely afternoon rehearsing outside in the sunshine with any willing cast members who were not required on set including the Doctor’s wife, Nurse Crane, Trixie, the Vicar and the Doctor’s son. There was a lot of laughter with Jenny Aguttur watching and taking photographs of US!!!
Filming took place over a whole day that same week with Granville calling from the stage of the Poplar Community Hall and our dancers partnering the cast. The photograph shows all our dancers after make-up and wardrobe ready to go on set – I bet when they started their beginners’ class they did not think they would end up dancing on prime time television! We were featured in Episode 6 of the last series in February 2015. Hogsmill Squares is planning to start a new beginners’ class in Chessington and are holding a FREE taster session at Chessington Methodist Church, Church Lane, KT9 2DJ at 8.00 pm on Monday 7th September 2015 – why not come along and see for yourself what fun it can be – your Monday evenings may never be the same again! If you cannot make the 7th it is planned to run classes every Monday thereafter and will be happy to accept new students throughout September 2015. If you are unsure or require further information please do not hesitate to contact Granville and Wendy Spencer on Tel: 02035 567449, Mob: 07752 431721or E-mail: spencer8@tiscali.co.uk.

View from the City
by Justin Urquhart Stewart
China’s Currency Conundrum Currencies are a conundrum for all, whether you are a central bank, a pension fund, or just a private investor trying to protect the value of your assets. They are often the forgotten part of an investment as most focus goes on the investment itself, be it a stock or a bond, and the currency is just part of the process of executing the deal. In fact the movements in currency can be the vital “swing factor” as to whether you are actually making money or losing it. In the days when currencies were “fixed”, life seemed so much easier as it took one variable out of your decision - at least you knew how many £s your investment was going to cost you. However once you move to variable values then anything can happen. Well actually life wasn’t that simple as so called “fixed” currencies were pegged at a rate until such time as economic forces blew the peg away. In 1967 Prime Minister Harold Wilson famously stated that: “It does not mean that the Pound here in Britain, in your pocket or purse or in your bank, has been devalued.” But of course it did, as the Swiss and the Danes saw earlier this year when busting their “firm” pegs against the Euro. All we can learn from this is that there is no certainty in pegged currencies, and in fact they can be more dangerous as they build up a head of steam until their value is no longer sustainable - and instead of a gentle movement in the currency you end up with a market tremor as the pressure is released. So last week we saw that the “pegged” Chinese currency wasn’t as secure as many had thought, and what was described by the central bank as being a one-time move to enhance the “market orientation and benchmark status” of the Renminbi, turned out to be a multi-day event throughout the week. Immediately the headlines talked of currency wars and national currency manipulation. Well I have yet to find a country that does not try to “manipulate” its currency for its own benefit. After all, exporters like to remain competitive and a rising currency can easily erode such value. Some of the populist American politicians also voiced (on cue) that this was Chinese anti-American policy leading to goods being dumped on the world market. The trouble is for the US$ is that in bad economic times for the globe investors seek protection in the $, and then in sunnier times investors like to benefit from a rising $. So it is difficult to win in their case.
24
The US Dollar of course has this status as it is the leading reserve currency in the world, with the Euro and Yen coming a distant second and third, along with Sterling trailing some way behind at something close to just 4%. For the Chinese, one of their stated aims has been to try and have their currency be accepted more internationally and to also become a reserve currency to the globe, and to the IMF in their SDRs (Special Drawing Rights). So part of last week’s movements were in all likelihood part of this broadening out process for the Renminbi to become more globally traded. London has already made its claim to try and be a centre for Renminbi trading, and the Chinese are keen to be able to wean their trades and contracts off their dependence on the Dollar and into their own currency. China still has some way to go, as having “soft” peg is neither one thing nor the other. The currency must become fully tradeable, but for the moment the authorities are worried about letting go their control, and in my view quite rightly until the proper trading mechanisms and controls are in place as we see with the fully recognised reserve currencies. In the meantime the juddering movements in the Renminbi will continue to have reverberations in other currencies as was seen last week throughout Asia especially. What though was of greater concern was the Dollar effect on those developing nations with $ denominated debt. Here countries like Malaysia and Indonesia have seen the cost of their debt go up significantly as the $ rises and their currency falls on the rippling effects from the Renminbi. For those with a memory going back to the South American sovereign debt crisis in the 1980s, a similar issue became very painful for those Latin nations who had been sold solid Dollar loans which became increasingly unsustainable as the Dollar rose and the Latin currencies crumpled. All of this has created a level of nervousness in the low volume trading days of August, and as such the volatility in equity markets has been exacerbated by the thinness of trading. The sooner we get back to deeper trading days the better - roll on St Leger day! Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Tax Matters By Andrew Khan - Principal Accountant at Tax Affinity Accountants.
Online Sellers to be targeted by HMRC for investigation. At Tax Affinity Accountants we have always been at the forefront of inside knowledge, key advice and support for the public. And we know that every tax year HMRC picks a category of business to focus its investigations on. We have been successfully guiding and helping those effected by investigations for many years. For the 2014/15 it was Landlords and Property Developers, for 2013/14 it was Electricians and Tutors 2012/13 it was Builders and Decorators. This tax year 2015/16 we have credible information that it is individuals selling items and services on Autotrader, Gumtree, Ebay, Amazon, E-Auctions, Craigslist, AirBnb and other online platforms that will be investigation for undeclared incomes. HMRC says it wants to target those that have failed to
PERSONAL TRAINING Look good and get fit for the summer - Weight loss and toning - Strength and conditioning - Nutrition plans - Affordable packages - Fit around your timetable
register for and pay the correct amount of tax. It thinks that this could amount to as much as £5.9 billion of missed tax. And so it is currently starting a consultation on extending their powers even further than before to be to collect data on companies and individuals from other sources. So far, Ebay has been sympathetic to the request from HMRC and says that it has tried to identify to its sellers their obligations to the tax authorities of the relevant country in which they trade. And have said that they would share information with the tax authorities where there is evidence of wrongdoing. And so it's highly likely other online platforms will be following suit. HMRC has said it is better that an online seller should come forward and volunteer to put their affairs in order as it will only be a matter of time before they will catch up them. They went on to say that they will not be targeting people selling personal property, but rather those that sell large quantities of similar or categorised items. And they will get the source information directly from the web and the online platform providers. From our experience investigations can take at least 6 months with some lasting up to 2 years and always cause a lot of stress upon individuals and their families. Especially as the penalties and fines can be up to a further 100% on top the tax due. If you are concerned about how this may affect your business we recommend you contact your local Tax Affinity Office and ask for more detailed help. Tax Affinity Accountants are experts in Tax and Accountancy. With branches in Worcester Park and Surbiton in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames they provide a bespoke service to client’s right across the UK and are considered in the industry to be experts. People Sir Jack Brabham’s Old Garage Sir Jack Brabham is remembered as Australia’s greatest driver and is one of only eight to win the Formula 1 World Championship three times. Brabham, who passed away in May last year at the age of 88, worked as a mechanic before he had the chance to race competitively. Most importantly, he still remains the only man to win the world championship in his own team with a car that he designed and built himself in 1966. He retired after 16 years at the pinnacle of motorsport having been close to winning his fourth championship in 1970 at the age of 44. Many know about his close companionship with John Cooper as they worked together in Cooper Cars’ garage
in Surbiton on the corner of Hollyfield Road. What fewer knew was that Brabham established a garage in 1961 at the top of Central Road in Worcester Park, only a year after his second consecutive world championship in Cooper machinery. Officially known as Jack Brabham WP Ltd, the garage existed for forty years until 2001, with the building now a set of flats and being renamed Brabham Court. Brabham, who was knighted in 1979, had other garages near Worcester Park in Surbiton, Ewell and Chessington, demonstrating the strong affiliation the locality has with motor racing.

Community Who are the Cuddington Residents’ Association, CRA?
Cuddington Ward councillors: Robert Foote, Lucie Dallen and Deputy Mayor George Crawford. Eber Kington represents Cuddington, Ewell Court and Auriol & Stoneleigh Residents’ Associations at Surrey County Council. Where is Cuddington? Cuddington Ward is on the northern tip of the Borough of Epsom and Ewell, centred around Shadbolt Park. A little bit of History The local politics of Epsom & Ewell have for a good part of the twentieth century been bound up with an almost unique form of democratic process. With the enormous expansion of housing in the 1930’s local residents’ associations were formed to give residents a forum for local debate, to organise social activities on the new estates, and to represent local views. At the beginning of the 20th century, many candidates for election to local government stood as independents. With increasing party-politicisation of national and local government, Epsom & Ewell stood out against the tide. The residents’ associations themselves put up candidates for election to the Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, and their candidates have been in control for nearly 80 years. Our goal To serve our local community by representing the views of the residents to the elected and county councillors, to make sure Cuddington remains a fantastic place to live. Recently we have introduced social media to the residents’ associations including a website, www.cuddingtonra.org and are also supported with a facebook page to keep up to date with current news in the Cuddington Ward. Cuddington Residents’ Association is open to all local residents and membership is only £3 per year, providing quarterly magazines called ‘The Cuddingtonian’. Recently the Cuddington Residents’ Association have been involved with the installment of the outdoor gym & new playground equipment at Shadbolt Park as well as the new tennis courts at Auriol Park. The Cuddington Residents’ Association

plays a large part in dealing with problems that residents come up against as well as helping to organise fundraising social events such as St. Patrick’s Night, Quiz Nights, ‘Big Day Out’ at Shadbolt Park and Shadbolt Park Sports Day. Over the next few months the Cuddington Residents’ Association are involved in a number of events that everyone is welcome to, although please note some events are restricted on numbers. Sunday 13th September The first ever TRI-FESTIVAL will take place on Sunday 13th September at Auriol Park, Salisbury Road, Worcester Park, KT4 7DP, from Noon4pm, FREE ENTRY, which involves three local residents’ association coming together to put on a spectacular community Family Fun Festival. Cuddington, Stoneleigh & Auriol and Ewell Court Residents’ Association have organized a fun afternoon including an ABBA Tribute Band, bouncy slides & rides, raffle prize draw, over 50 different stalls including food, crafts and activities. There will also be displays from Hands Down Martial Arts Academy, The Sports Village and Protègèm Dance School. Gardening Lovely Lawns
Pippa Greenwood Almost every garden has a lawn, and there is a lot you can do to keep it in good condition. Don’t wait until spring but get to work now with some autumn lawn care to keep your lawn looking healthy and green. Large weeds in small lawns are best removed by hand, perhaps using a sturdy old kitchen knife – perfect for removing dandelions, small clumps of daisies and other weeds missed by the mower. You should also take a look at the level of moss in the lawn: when green and luxuriant it can look quite attractive, but once it dies out the lawn will look really awful. On the whole, moss in lawns is encouraged by compaction, poor drainage of the soil and lawn surface and by excessive shading, perhaps by nearby trees or herbaceous plants in adjacent borders. It is worth doing anything you can to alleviate these problems, and for shading you should prune back shrubs which overhang the lawn or have trees professionally crown thinned or lifted, so that more light gets through to the lawn. Herbaceous plants are easily dealt with by using bamboo canes and string to ease them up and away from the grass. Compaction is relatively easy to deal with, and in small areas where the problem is not too bad, you can use a normal garden fork. Drive this into the lawn every 10 – 15 cm (4 – 6 in) and ease it back and forth slightly to enlarge the holes created by the tines of the fork. This creates some drainage channels, which will also improve aeration. On very heavy sites or where compaction is bad, use a hollow tine aerator. These can be bought as attachments for some lawnmowers, or you can buy or hire a dedicated machine or piece of equipment. A hollow tine aerator removes cylinders of turf and the soil beneath, thus producing a better effect than using a garden fork. Once aerated, brush a sandy top dressing mixture into all the holes, using a mixture of sieved garden soil and horticultural sand, perhaps mixed with a small quantity of sieved leaf mould. The top dressing ensures that the holes are kept open to allow better drainage and aeration over a longer period. Use a proprietary moss killer if moss is really out of control, applied exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions; you should make sure that the moss is killed off completely before you attempt to rake it out. Raking out can be combined with scarifying, where you use a spring tined rake to aggressively rake the surface of the lawn, so that dead moss, thatch (the accumulated bits of dead grass and other lawn debris) and any other surface debris are removed. Once done, you will find
44
that the lawn looks a lot worse than it did when you started, as it will look thinner and more moth-eaten. However, scarifying helps to ensure that the grasses receive plenty of air and allows for better re-growth; have faith, the situation will improve. If you still have bare areas once you have improved the texture of the soil and fixed drainage problems, then reseed or over-seed using a suitable grass-seed mixture. To improve germination and speed of growth, pin a piece of horticultural fleece or Enviromesh over the newly sown area. This will help keep it warmer and prevent birds from stealing the grass seed. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for vegetable plants, Nemaslug, mesh and fleece, Speed Hoes, Speed Weeders, SoftTie, pop-up crop covers , copper tape and lots more besides.

Safer Neighbourhoods Police Meetings I have been wondering what I could tell you about this month…. Recently I’ve covered Protecting Your Bike, Protecting your Vehicle, Personal Safety, Theft in the Street and two lots of general good news about what your Safer Neighbourhood Team has been up to. So, what next? Ah….I know! The Worcester Park & Nonsuch Safer Neighbourhood Teams hold little ‘meetings’ throughout the year which enable our local residents, you, to come and talk to us. You can pop by at any of these meetings and ask for crime prevention advice, let us know if you have any concerns in your area, or simply have a friendly chat. These little meetings come in a variety of formats, you have: ‘Street Briefings’ - These meetings take place in a road in your area (a different road each time) and we spend around half an hour, weather permitting, at the location chatting to local residents. We’re never too far away and we’ll probably be very near, or even in YOUR street one day in the not too distant future. ‘Drop-in Surgeries’ - With these, we arrange to be at a certain ‘indoor’ location at a given time, usually for around an hour. There we can sit and chat to you in comfort and out of the wind and driving rain that we usually associate with the great British summer…. Or even better, why not join us for a ‘Cuppa with a copper’ - These are my favourite! We arrange to spend up to an hour in a café or coffee house in Central Road Worcester Park or London Road North Cheam and again you can pop by and have an informal chat with us while you enjoy your cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate with marshmallows and extra cream on top…. Unfortunately, the current cuts to the police budget mean that sadly, we cannot treat you to these nice warm beverages….We’re sorry! But we will be very pleased to see you and listen to what you want to say. Here are the scheduled meetings for September: Street Briefing - Friday 4th September in Balmoral Road at the junction with Central Road - 5pm till 5.30pm Drop-in Surgery - Thursday 10th September in Christ Church with St Philip in Ruskin Drive - 11am till 12 midday Street Briefing - Thursday 17th September outside
46
the entrance to Sainsburys in London Road, North Cheam 2pm till 2.30pm Street Briefing - Monday 21st September in Green Lane at the Junction with Central Road - 5pm till 5.30pm And we end the month with a Bike Marking Event when you can bring your treasured bike and have it marked and registered for FREE. This event will take place outside: Worcester Park Police Office - 154 Central Road on Wednesday 30th September - 3pm till 6pm We will try to schedule a ‘Cuppa with a Copper’ for sometime in October.... For future police meetings please look online at: met.police.uk click on ‘Your Borough’ then click on ‘Safer Neighbourhood Teams’ then simply click on ‘Worcester Park’ or ‘Nonsuch’ to find the scheduled dates and venues. We look forward to seeing you. If you can’t pop out to see us for any reason, you can still talk to us by phoning 020 8649 3590 Thank you

Baking Lemon Crumble Cheesecake Bars Tangy and creamy with a golden buttery crumble topping, these cheesecake bars make a delicious sweet treat. For a smoother cheesecake filling, use full-fat soft cheese instead of the ricotta. Makes 12 slices Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling time FOR THE BASE: 250g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 140g butter, chilled and diced 125g caster sugar 1 medium egg, beaten FOR THE FILLING: 750g ricotta cheese 225g caster sugar Zest and juice of 1 lemon 3 medium eggs, beaten 100ml soured cream 1 tbsp cornflour Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate 1 Preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/Gas Mark 4. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs then stir in the sugar. Reserve a third of the mixture and chill in the fridge. Stir the beaten egg into the rest of the mixture to make a crumbly dough. Spread into the base of the prepared tin and press down firmly in an even layer. 3 Bake the cheesecake base for 15-20 minutes, or until pale golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool
for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 160C/ Fan 140C/Gas Mark 3. 4 To make the filling, beat the ricotta cheese, sugar and lemon juice and zest in a bowl until creamy then gradually beat in the eggs. Fold in the soured cream and cornflour and spread the mixture over the warm base. 5 Sprinkle the reserved fine crumble mixture over the top in an even layer. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes, or until set and pale golden. Leave in the tin to cool completely then chill for 2-3 hours. Slice into 12 bars and serve decorated with fresh mint sprigs. TIP For an extra fruity flavour, scatter some fresh blueberries or raspberries over the cheesecake mixture before sprinkling with the crumble mixture.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams
home to many wild creatures, whose needs, apparently, do not matter - taking their homes denies them access to the resources they need to live - and so we, in effect, kill them.
FOR CECIL.
In what way was Cecil’s killer different?
Some time between writing last month’s article, and this one, Cecil the lion happened.
I am not defending him - what he did was atrocious and horrific - but is his attitude, that he can just pay to go and kill another animal, for the pleasure of doing so, any different, in essence, to the majority human view that other animals have no intrinsic value - their worth is only in relation to what human beings can get from them?
The global outrage that his murder provoked gave me a small bit of hope for the soul of humanity. However, most people who condemned this killing and called for the extradition of the American dentist who did it, to face poaching charges in Zimbabwe, do not share the vegan view that other animals should have the right to exist on this earth without being exploited and killed by human beings, simply because they are ‘just animals’. I might, therefore ask them, on what grounds they condemn Cecil’s killer? Cecil was just a lion. Why is he important, and other wildlife is not? The UK government may kill badgers with the excuse that they cause bovine TB, even though vaccination would be cheaper, and people who want hunting with hounds restored to our countryside make the excuse they are controlling a pest species, and developments may take place on land that is ‘just wasteland’ in our eyes, but which happens to be

If a patch of wild habitat just ‘looks untidy’, people are likely to mow it down, regardless of whether any small creatures depend on it for their survival. If a tract of woodland is in the path of some proposed leisure centre, or bypass, or retail park, humans will think it is perfectly reasonable to hack it down, irrespective of the needs of the animals whose home it is. For palm oil, orang utan lives and homes are simply destroyed. For ivory, elephants are murdered. For ‘tradition’ dolphins, whales and sharks are slaughtered. For fur, beautiful animals are captured in snares. For animal farming, huge areas of rainforest have been bulldozed. Deserts have appeared where once there was lush vegetation, because herds of domestic animals,
Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers
who do not belong in that habitat, have overgrazed it. Wetlands have been drained for farm land and other developments. Few people, except those like me, speak up for the needs of wildlife. Even fewer raise objections to the routine slaughter of thousands of animals a second for the table - even those who are in the environmental movement leave that ‘elephant in the room’ alone, although it is well documented how damaging to the environment industrial scale animal farming actually is. Animals like Cecil face a decreasing wilderness and the ever present threat of people with guns who consider themselves completely entitled to go in and kill them and display their heads or other body parts as trophies in their homes. We accord other animals few rights in this world. We behave like we own the earth. If we were to scale down the entire timescale of planet earth’s existence into just one calendar year - for ease of imagining, since huge figures like 4.6 billion years are impossible for us to assimilate sensibly - we would discover that the human race has only been here for a few moments at the end of the last day - 31 December. For most of its existence, earth was either uninhabitable or populated only by bacteria. The life sustaining organisms of this planet are bacteria, plants and insects. Many people, disgusted at the way human beings are destroying this earth, say that we are a huge plague upon
it and of no benefit to it whatever. There are times when I feel that they might be right. My back garden is a haven for wild creatures, because I refuse to deny them space. I may be the owner, in human law, of this patch of land, but morally I do not consider myself more entitled to this space than the smallest creature who visits it or the many plants whose seeds come in on wind and paw and fur or are passed through the guts of some larger visitor. Many religious people talk about humanity being some kind of ‘steward’ of a world brought into existence by a divine Creator. I look around me and do not see that we are tending this earth well, with respect and love -as we should be if we truly view ourselves as ‘stewards’ or caretakers of it. It is not legal to take a gun and go and kill somebody’s dog, cat or cow - because they are ‘property’. But you may go and shoot a lovely wild animal to death and you can even boast about it on social media. I would like a world where a free born, wild creature may live out his life according to his kind, without the violent and selfish whims of human beings crashing destructively into it. RIP Cecil, and all the beautiful creatures of earth that humankind has needlessly slain.
