Editor’s letter This month we’ve get another magazine full of varied content and advertisers. When I pick up any of the other ‘local’ publications it’s difficult to find much reference to Worcester Park, and I really want this magazine to represent the heart of this community and promote whatever is going on. In this edition local write Ruth Jemmet shares her thoughts about mental illness, wildlife lover tells us about the seasonal goings on at Shadbolt pond and how you can get involved in this fantastic project which we’ve helped to promote. So if this is something that interests you then get out there – it’s a great way to make new friendships too. Dates and times are in Carol’s article. When I read the Safer Neighbourhood piece this month from PSCO Gary Weaving it really wound me up! His subject matter is traders preying on the vulnerable. So where we can let’s all try to look out for our elderly neighbours and protect them from these random criminals. More great readers offers this month from some of our advertisers. Worcester Park History Last month’s instalment in the story of the Cheam Common schools ended with Miss Harper’s retirement as the Infants’ School Headmistress in December 1947.

The premises were now in need of replacement, and the site was required for road widening. In April the school opened as a Council school in the corrugated iron building in Balmoral Road which the Infants’ School had just vacated. Girls aged 11 and over, numbering over 100, were transferred to the new Cheam Central School at the end of the year, and in March 1933 the school completed its transformation into a Junior Mixed school. The new school soon began to enjoy success in local competitions: in May 1933 Cheam Common won both the Boys’ and Girls’ Junior Shields at the Sutton and District Schools Sports Association sports day. This success was followed in autumn 1934 at the Sutton schools swimming gala, at which the boys’ team won the first prize, and the girls came first equal. The range of activities open to pupils continued to grow: in March 1935 a party travelled to Kingston for one of the Robert Mayer children’s concerts and, later in the year, 43 went on a Port of London Authority Docks and River Cruise. In 1934 work began on the construction of the present school building in Kingsmead Avenue which was ready in time for the beginning of the summer term in 1935. By this time there were 375 pupils on the roll. Dorothy Payne (née Soley), a pupil in the Junior School in the late 1940s, remembers the headmistress u

Her successor, Miss Marjorie Berry, served from 1948 to 1970. She introduced various activities which became annual events. Spring Festivals were held in March or April: in 1952 “the children brought flowers and Easter eggs; a service was held in the morning when the children sang hymns and recited poems… Later the gifts were taken to Children’s Homes and to an Old Folks Home.” On 27 June 1953 the Parents & Teachers Association held a Coronation Fête at which the children gave a performance of ‘The Crowning of the Rose Queen’ and a demonstration on the agility apparatus. This Rose Queen Festival became a regular occurrence each July.Visiting theatre companies entertained the school, and the top classes put on plays for the younger ones, such as Peter Rabbit in 1963 and The Clockwork Clown in 1968. A swimming pool was added to the school’s facilities in 1970, and a new play area in 1971. In September 1987 a new nursery class was opened. Initially this was housed in a spare classroom, but in July 1994 work began on clearing a site for purpose-built premises. Around the same time, a competition was held to design a garden for the school with the aim of promoting environmental education. The new nursery building was taken into use on 1 May 1995: the last of the iron classrooms, of which the first had been installed as a temporary measure in 1904, was taken to the Chalk Pits Museum in Amberley. Standing opposite the entrance to Balmoral Road and looking beyond the Infants’ School playground, we can see the cream-rendered building of Cheam Common Junior School. Until March 1932 the girls’ school had remained as a Church of England school. Olive Dare, a pupil in the early 1920s when Miss Carette was headmistress, recalls that sewing lessons, in addition to needlework and knitting, included instruction in the use of a sewing machine: “We had a concert, and saved enough money from that to buy the machine.” Although the school only had a hard playground, they were able to use the field behind the Infants’ School for netball games. Although there were new developments in school life – the netball team began to play against other schools at Banstead and Sutton in the late 1920s, and a gramophone was purchased in 1928 – the school was still housed in the 1878 building close to St. Philip’s. Mrs Wood, and another teacher of the same surname who, because she collected savings contributions each week, was differentiated as “Savings Mrs Wood”. Miss Batchelor “used to take us out on the nature walks into the park in Sandringham Road, collecting leaves”, where they also played rounders. One of her favourite lessons was sewing, including embroidery, hemming and smocking gingham: “once we got started on our work, Mrs Wood used to read to us, things like What Katy Did, Little Women, Little Men… once she’d got us started she never seemed to need to help anyone – everyone was so interested in doing their sewing, and listening.” One of our photographs this month, courtesy of

Dorothy West, a pupil at the Junior School in c1931-4, shows pupils as Ancient Britons; Miss West is second from the right in the front row. The other photograph, with thanks to Kay Foale, shows the Balmoral Road junction and the iron buildings still in place; also visible, to the left, are the Barn Glass premises on the corner of Lindsay Road. I hope in a forthcoming article to feature some of Worcester Park’s celebrations of previous Jubilees. If you have any photographs or memories of street parties or other events marking the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in 1977 or 2002, or indeed of George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935, I should be very pleased to hear from you. It’s all in the mind Ruth Jemmett examines our attitudes towards mental health A large spider recently ran across the floor of my home, and I instinctively jumped back in fright. Like many people I have an instinctive fear reaction to eight-legged beasties. The ‘fight or flight’ response is built into our DNA to ensure our survival as a species. It is a case of ‘run now - ask questions later’, and for the most part this protection device serves us well. The adrenalin rush I felt as I leapt across the room proved that this Worcester Park lady moves well in a crisis! It is an unusual person who doesn’t possess at least one fear, but sometimes, due either to faulty childhood conditioning or chemical imbalances in our brains, the inability to cope with the mere thought of dealing with everyday life can make life almost unbearable for some people. Sadly, the media seems to be filled with stories about celebrities who have dealt with their demons by trying to blot them out with drink or drugs. Life isn’t particularly easy for anyone, but people in the public spotlight have to fight an extra battle, and eventually run out of places to hide. Someone with an obvious physical ailment will usually get sympathy from those around them, but one cannot always say the same about mental conditions. Luckily our world is becoming more educated about people whose brains don’t function within the ‘normal’ spectrum, but ignorance and prejudice is never far away. If you walk along the streets of any locality - even seemingly safe suburban Worcester Park - you will be familiar with the sight of people slouched in doorways, taking refuge in drink or drugs because their lives seem intolerable. One in three of the distressed young men you so commonly see on London streets are ex-servicemen, whose minds can’t cope with the horrors they have seen, or deal with civilian life whilst they are still in shock. Such people are usually ignored, mocked or feared. Post natal depression (which is triggered by the hormonal action, exhaustion and stress of childbirth) affects one new mother in five to a certain degree, and in its severest form can lead to post partum psychosis. Also, one in eight mothers of children under twelve is taking anti-depressants because the strains of parenting often prove to be overwhelming. Depression, one of the most common causes of mental distress, can be brought on by either chemical reasons (such as childbirth) or causal reasons, such as bereavement

10

or drug misuse. Although bereavement can be devastating, such sad feelings are normal, and the cliché “time heals” can sometimes make such mental anguish less painful as years go by. Occasionally the feeling of crushing sadness that accompanies a loss turns into an abnormal grief response, and no-one should be too proud to seek medical help or counselling. Our educational system works hard to prepare the next generation for dealing with the lives ahead of them, but how much do we prepare our young people for the mental stress that everyday situations will put them in? Eating disorder amongst young people are at a worryingly high rate. Yes, our children have never been given such wonderful educational and social opportunities, but what about those whose families or surroundings haven’t provided them with the mental strength to deal with the accompanying demands put upon them? Although it is true that there have never been so many young people attending universities in our country, there have equally never been so many of them in attempting suicide. Self-harming is at worryingly high rates, as children struggle to fit into the demanding world around them. Fifty years ago children had a healthy balance between work

and play, but it now seems that they are often pressurised by parents to fill every hour out of school with endless competitive hobbies and games. Their bedrooms are crammed with the latest technology, leaving them scant time to daydream or make sense of the world around them. As the poet William Henry Davies once said - “ What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?“ Their constant e-mailing and texting takes away their opportunities to have normal face-to-face discussions which are so necessary for normal mental health. To understand each other and empathise with each other we need to see facial responses and learn to read body language. Old fashioned family meals around the dinner table, where problems can be discussed, are becoming a thing of the past. How can a nervous or frightened child share their fears with machines? During the last century or so, pioneering psychologists and psychiatrists began to unravel the mysteries of the brain a little, and it soon became evident that childhood conditioning - and even inadequate nutrition - plays a large part in our eventual mental health. Happily the realm of phobias (exaggerated negative responses to everyday experiences) can be greatly helped by Cognitive Behaviourial Therapy, but conditions such as causal or chemical depression can prove to be a long-term work in progress. Although we have, for the most part, emptied the grim mental hospitals of days gone by, ( five major ones having existed in nearby Epsom not so many years ago),

our so-called ‘care in the community’ is something our society should be ashamed of. The truth is that a lot of communities simply don’t care - unless they are personally affected. Even in these supposedly enlightened times, it is not unusual to see a comedian making fun of mentally ill or disabled people. As one in four of us will be affected by some form of dementia as we get older perhaps we should put more thought into the prevention and treatment of conditions that are directly attributable to our brains not working correctly. Life is a precious gift. If we put as much effort into ensuring the health of our brains as we do into that of maintaining our bodies - or even our cars - the world would be a happier place for all of us. The Holy Cross School, New Malden celebrates its 80th Anniversary In 1881 a house called “Southesk” was built in Sandal Road. It was surrounded by fields. The first occupants were the Austine Family. They had 3 children: Beatrice (15), Alice (12) and Henry (13), and Eliza who was a servant. Over the front door there is a Latin inscription, which in English says, “this is the house that John built” – John was Mr Austine’s first name. In 1931 the last of the Austine family had died and the Sisters of the Holy Cross bought “Southesk” from Mr Thomas, the solicitor who was dealing with the estate. The Sisters of the Holy Cross already had a Convent and School in West Wimbledon. The Bishop (Amigo) asked them to start another School in New Malden. Sr Christina, and two other Sisters moved into the house in June 1931. On 23rd September 1931 Holy Cross Convent School was opened with 5 Students. Above excerpt taken from ‘History of the School’, a piece written by Sr Margaret which features in the ‘Memories of Holy Cross Book’ produced for 75th Anniversary of the school in 2007. Copies are available from the school. Over the years the school has grown and more buildings have been added, but the original house front, with minor alterations, still remains as the main entrance to the school. The school is holding an 80th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday 12th May 2012 from 1.15pm to 6pm and all past pupils and staff are welcome to attend. It will be a chance for you to catch up with old friends, tour the school and attend the Thanksgiving Mass. For this special occasion there will also be a Grand Raffle to raise money for the work that the Holy Cross Sisters do for children in the Karnataka State in India. If you are a past pupil and you have any photos, memorabilia etc that you would like to share with us please email it

Too many business initiatives and acronyms around in the world of finance? Justin Urquhart Stewart shares his thoughts

So just how many company finance initiatives do you think we have? Political leaders have, over the years, taken great pride in launching their own initiative, their pet idea – new fresh and different from the last one – mainly because it was ’invented here’. They then go on to rubbish the fading and failing predecessor and show how their idea is better. Its title? Well, you can simply put your hand into a scrabble bag and come out with some odd letters and there you have it – created in a party think tank, designed by Whitehall and ignored by everyone. So I have made a small effort to try and identify the current crop of acronyms and jumbled letters. Now I can’t be sure that this is a complete list, as no doubt there are some other economic initiatives that the Ministry of Ministerial Affairs has developed that I have not been made aware of. The list is quite extensive, with seven as far as I can see. With the Budget nearly upon us, we can all hear a

consistent theme of business focus and investment and the tired phrase of ’joined up thinking’. I believe the intentions behind each of these initiatives are worthy ones, however upon asking business people about them you find a huge disconnect. 1-National Loan Guarantees Scheme - NLGS (credit easing) up to £20bn of bank guarantees. Seems to have got off to a slow start as SMEs say banks are slow or reluctant to take up the scheme. 2-Business Finance Partnership - BFP £1bn. Government to invest alongside private investors. 3-Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme - EFGS £2bn. So far, since 2008, £1.4bn to 13,900 companies and another £2bn announced (complaints from some applicants that this is failing as banks still want personal guarantees on top of the government scheme!). 4-Export Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme - EEFGS. Launched April 2011 but so far only 5 loans made for £2.9m of trade! It is now to be merged into the UK Export Finance’s schemes (ECGD). 5-Enterprise Capital Funds - ECF - a Quango run by Capital for Enterprise awarded an additional £300m in March 2011. 6-Regional Growth Fund - RGF £2.4bn; so far 140 businesses have received £190m. 7-Business Growth Fund - BGF £2.5bn, launched in May 2011,a bank led fund but so far funded only 4 projects. Confused? Not surprising. Roughly this adds up to something over £30bn, which is

a considerable amount of firepower – but I wonder just how many people know about all or any of these and where and how they may be applicable. Judging by the number of them, there must be a small office somewhere in Whitehall dedicated to just dreaming up names for new initiatives. Just imagine then what could happen if such financial muscle was concentrated in an effective manner? That would be a dramatic display of strength. Perhaps I could suggest some equally baffling acronyms that they should consider which might be more appropriate. Possibly the British Unrestricted Growth Guarantee Enterprise Reserve - Overseas Funding Facility. This would focus on our exports and be designed to get all of those in the way, out of the way and thus achieving a practical use for the acronym. To this you could also add the very officious action team whose task would be to blow away the red tape and petty bureaucracy that holds up so much planning and development. Again the acronym seems to fit here for the Strategic Opportunity Direct Development Initiative Taskforce. The serious and key point here though is all about focus – being able to directly apply financial support and initiative is not as easy as it sounds. Good ideas may filter through just as water does through porous rock, but they take years to see any effect. Such initiatives must not just be able to make some tangible difference but just as importantly be seen to be doing so. Such issues directly effect that economic turnkey – confidence. WPL

Clubs The Worcester Park Dramatic Society is a local amateur drama group of long standing. We stage two major productions a year at the Adrian Mann Theatre in Ewell, in April and November.

Our 2011 production of ‘The Militants’ won the coveted NODA London Flame Award. The photo shows the cast of our production of Terrence Rattigan’s ‘Separate Tables’. We meet every Tuesday and most Fridays at 8.15 pm in the Elmcroft Community Centre in North Cheam, on the Sainsbury’s site. Apart from play readings, rehearsals

and set construction, we have quiz nights and various social events. We also arrange group outings to amateur and professional theatre productions. We welcome new members to help us stage future productions anyone willing to act or work backstage. The latter includes set construction, stage management, sound and lighting. If Interested call our member- ship secretary, Joyce Cranfield on 020 8337 3317.

Cornucopia, our April production, consists of five single act plays: ‘Four Queens’ is set in Heaven where former wives of Henry VIII await his arrival wondering with which of them he will spend Eternity. ‘Just the Two of Us’ is a humorous exploration of the consequences of modern fertility science. ‘Plaster’ features a cheating husband in hospital after a car crash getting his just deserts from his visiting wife. ‘Magic’ ironically observes conversations in a hospital ward. ‘Unhand Me, Squire’ is an old-fashionedmelodrama. Easter Chocolate Mousse Cake Perfect for a special Easter Sunday meal this indulgent dessert has a chocolate sponge base, creamy white chocolate mousse filling and a rich and dark chocolate glaze. It can be prepared the day before or made a couple of weeks in advance and frozen. BASE • 3 eggs • 70g caster sugar • 50g plain flour • 2 tbsp cocoa powder MOUSSE • 2 x 150g bars good quality white chocolate, broken into pieces • 3 tbsp milk • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 300ml double cream • 3 large egg whites • 2 tsp powdered gelatine GLAZE • 85g plain chocolate • 20g unsalted butter • 4 tbsp double cream • Melted white chocolate and small candy coated chocolate eggs, to decorate

26

Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. Grease and line the base of a 20 cm round spring-form tin. To make the base, whisk the eggs and sugar together in a large heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water until very thick and pale – the whisk should leave a trail in the mixture when lifted. Sift over the flour and cocoa and fold in gently. Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 12-15 minutes until just springy to the touch. Turn out and leave to cool completely. Clean the tin and lightly grease and re-line the base. Place the cold sponge in the base of the tin. To make the mousse, place the white chocolate, milk and vanilla extract in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth then stir in 4 tbsp of the cream. Dissolve the gelatine in 2 tbsp hot water. Cool for a few minutes then stir into the chocolate mixture. Softly whip the rest of the cream and fold into the chocolate mixture. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold in. Spoon the mousse over the sponge base and chill for 3-4 hours until set. For the chocolate glaze, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, stir until smooth then stir in the cream. Leave until cool and thick enough to spread, stirring occasionally. Remove the mousse cake from the tin and gently spread the chocolate glaze over the top. Drizzle with melted white chocolate and decorate with the chocolate eggs. WPL

Love Worcester Park This Easter For Christians, Easter is a very special time to celebrate how much God loves the world and everyone in it. “God loves you enough to die for you!” is the strapline for an exciting community project at Easter 2012 by the church family at Worcester Park Baptist Church in The Avenue, opposite the station. Lucy Wright, Associate Minister of the church, explains. “We wanted to show and share God’s love with folk in the local community in a very practical way and partner with others. So we came up with the idea of restoring the open space at the end of The Avenue which had become a bit of an eyesore. The Council laid a new path in February and they are also arranging for all the debris on the land to be cleared and for the grassed area which had been damaged by recent civil contract works to be topsoiled and seeded. Our part of the project will be cutting back the trees and restoring the flower beds near the traffic lights. We will be planting evergreen and colourful shrubs – and daffodils of course, which we hope will take and be will be in flower for Easter. Then we hope to be able to enjoy using the site during the Easter weekend celebrations. Hundreds of people pass by the site every day to and from the station and high street. We want to share with each one of them that God loves them. We hope and pray that each time they see and use the site, they will remember that God thinks they are VIPs – loved, unique and precious to him.” Councillor Ken Smith, Chair of Maldens & Coombe Neighbourhood Committee, said “We welcome this community initiative which can make a tremendous difference to the local environment. This is a great example of local enthusiasm and drive being targeted to make a significant difference to the experience of the whole community. The Council is pleased to work with any local organisations who would like to make a positive contribution to life in our Neighbourhood.”

On the grapevine Aret Kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin on the joys Croatia has to offer.... I’ve just returned from a wonderful, if somewhat chaotic trip to Croatia and although I’m exhausted, my passion for the people, land, sea, food and of course wine, has been well and truly renewed! My husband and I were there for a family wedding, which took place in the beautiful town of Opatija in western Croatia on the Adriatic coast. With its stunning Austro-Hungarian architecture, winding ‘lungomare’ seaside promenade and blue waters, it’s a place that once visited, you must return to again and again. Our trip was made all the more exciting by the thirty-odd young Belgians there to cheer on the groom, who could not have enjoyed their first visit to Croatia more, and boy did we know it! The wine at the reception was highly enjoyable and suitably easy to drink. With the weather so bright and summery, I chose to drink the Zlahtina. The perfect accompaniment to Croatia’s gorgeous sheep’s milk cheeses, fish and white meat dishes, this local white wine is grown mainly in a narrow area of the nearby Island of Krk. Zlahtina is always gentle and medium bodied and I like to describe it as a beginners wine, a wine to ease the unsure into Croatian vino territory. The variety gives high yields of large grapes, yet good quality juice that produces wines of alcohol content ranging from 11% to 12%. With soft aromas of apple and ripe citrus and occasional floral notes, this is an

immediate wine, a drink now variety that in my opinion, does not age well due to its gentle nature. It’s not yet available in the UK, but I believe it’s just a matter of time. As the evening wore on the food was plentiful (7 or 8 courses!), the music was loud, but the Belgians were louder! Belgian chants of ‘Where is the party, here is the party’, dominated the evening. Prior to the raucous toasts, I was overjoyed to be served a fantastic Croatian version of my favourite tipple… bubbly! Croatia is not often associated with sparkling wine but Persuric Misal Sparkling wine was deliciously delicate and fresh, and so I chose to spend much of the rest of my evening (and morning) sipping Croatian bubbly on the Marina at Icici, while the party carried on inside. Alas, the trip was over and I had to leave the sun, sea (and sparkling) and return to England to work. My husband stayed out there to explore the nearby Istrian wine country (alright for some!) with the perfect guide, his mother who is herself Istrian. While I can’t help but bemoan the fact that I couldn’t stay longer myself, my lovely husband did return bearing gifts! Right now I’m looking at seven different bottles of wine from Istria that I’ve been told are to die for. Croatia never ceases to surprise me and I can’t wait to try these new offerings. I’ll keep you posted but if you’re tempted to go there and explore Croatia and its wines for yourself, do it. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

When you join, you offer an article to lend or give away, or a skill. Then suppose you need a long ladder and don’t have one, or your computer is playing up. You may be able to borrow the ladder or get some compter help from someone who lives down the road. You get to know each other, and say hello next time you meet.

Gradually the local community becomes more connected. It’s good for the environment too - you can share equipment and tools you only use occasionally. There is free stuff that you may have a use for, and you can rehome stuff you no longer want. And it gives you a nice warm feeling helping someone out. Have a look at www.streetbank.com. Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving Bogus builders and cold callers After a couple of recent incidents where vulnerable elderly residents were conned out of literally thousands of pounds, I felt it appropriate to use this month’s article to highlight this wicked crime. All too often these day’s con artists and ruthless individuals are cold calling at the homes of our more elderly residents knowing that more often than not they will prove an easy target. Many vulnerable people are easily intimidated into withdrawing large amounts of money time and time again to pay for work that frankly does not need to be done. In one recent incident (which was in the local paper) an elderly lady was told that damage to her front wall would cost her over £4000, when in fact it should have cost little more than £100. Luckily on this occasion, the lady’s bank (Lloyds TSB) alerted police and a man was arrested. The bank staff are to be congratulated and other banks encouraged to train their staff to be more alert to elderly customers withdrawing large amounts of money. In another incident a 90-year-old woman who lives alone has been conned out of a total of £22,200 by bogus builders. The woman, who is recovering from a hip operation, paid several demands for money before refusing to pay any more. Her neighbours then found out what was going on and police were called. The resident of Trafalgar Avenue, Worcester Park, received a call at her front door on Friday 24th February at around 5pm. The male caller said he was working on the development opposite and noticed the roof of her semi-detached house needed repairing. After climbing a ladder for a closer look, he reported that the repair would cost £2,700. A few days later, a different male telephoned asking for a further £4,800 to hire expensive equipment for the work. He wanted cash and asked the woman not to tell the bank it was for building repairs. An additional £4,800 was requested over the phone to meet the insurance costs of leaving the equipment on site. During the next telephone call, the resident said

38

she didn’t want the work carried out and wanted a refund. She was told that she would be refunded by bankers draft but this would cost an extra £5,000. The resident believes that she paid a further £4,900 at some stage during the visits and telephone calls. All these payments were collected. The suspects’ vehicle was described as a silver van with the letters ‘B R’ on the side. Police are urging anyone who may have seen this vehicle to come forward. Please contact Sutton Police station on 101. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. PC Duncan Harris, of Sutton’s Crime Prevention Team, say’s residents should refuse entry, and refuse to pay money, to any unknown and unexpected callers. “Residents of any age are advised not to do business with unsolicited workmen who call at their door,” he say’s. Sutton Council run a Safer Sutton Trader Scheme to help residents employ workmen and be confident that certain standards will be met. For details visit: www.sutton.gov.uk and click on Safer Sutton Trader Scheme under ‘Useful Links’. Alternatively, call 020 8770 5070.

Frogs, frogs, frogs! Frogs came to Shadbolt Park pond in the first week of March. Local wildlife lover Carol Williams gives us the low down... Water levels are higher than they were at this time last year, the habitat has matured and there is much more vegetation to hide in. As I write everything around the pond area is greening up. When the tadpoles develop and leave the water, there will be good cover for them, which will hopefully aid survival rate. It is a hard fact of life that small beings like froglets are food for many other creatures. Even adult frogs are not safe; one of the many reasons that they hide, motionless, in damp places for most of the year. Female frogs lay around 2.000 eggs in the water, and less than 3 in every thousand survive to become a mature adult. So, when you see an adult frog, salute it! He or she is a real survivor. The places that frogs need for successful breeding and ongoing survival are disappearing worldwide. Half of

our amphibialn species are in sharp decline. Habitat destruction is the main threat. Frogs like suburban gardens, parks and school grounds that provide them with a pond, long grass to hide in, log piles and compost heaps. Nature will rapidly reward anybody prepared to create a wildlife haven. It is hard to believe that 18 months ago there was no pond in Shadbolt Park, so beautifully has it developed into a really useful wildlife space. On warm Summer days, frogs hide in tall vegetation, emerging at night to hunt insects, snails and slugs. Using garden poisons, especially slug pellets, will kill the animals and birds that eat the poisoned molluscs, among them frogs, hedhehogs and thrushes. Shadbolt Park pond is the centre of a wildlife area. To the back and sides of the railings we are creating, managing and enjoying several different small habitats: long grass, wild flowers, hedge and thicket, log piles, compost heaps and leaf litter. Insects are a vital part of the life cycle, so encouraging them is key- without them nothing will flourish. It is a sobering thought that without pollinating insects, we could never have begun to grow crops; we are part of Nature and dependent on its bounty. It is a great joy to see the frogs abounding at the pond and to nurture habitat to benefit them. We are there every Wednesday and Saturday mornings, in all weathers, from 10.30 until about 11.30 and would welcome your

Slugs and snails by Pippa Greenwood

This is the time of year when you’re likely to start to notice the presence of slugs and snails in your garden, greenhouse, coldframe, window box....indeed just about everywhere. There are many different species; the most common in gardens are probably species of Milax (the keeled slugs) and Arion (e.g. the garden slug and the large black slug), plus the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatus). The garden snail, Helix aspersa is generally the most troublesome but may also be joined by various species of the banded snail, Cepaea. It never ceases to amaze me how much damage something as small as a slug can do and in such a short space of time. But then the truth of it is, there is never just one slug or one snail, you can always be sure that there will be hoards of them. I garden on clay and our soil is alkaline and so we have a plentiful supply of snails; if you garden on an acidic soil you will generally find that snails are not a problem as they need the calcium to make their shells. To say that they infuriate me would be an understatement, but the type I hate most are those small grey-black keeled slugs that do such a lot of damage to crops such as potatoes. I garden without chemicals so there is no question of using pellets, but I have tried pretty well every other trick in the book. When it comes to potatoes I grow largely earlies and early mains and these crops are less susceptible because they are lifted relatively promptly. It also pays dividends if you grow varieties such as Pentland Dell, Wilja, Charlotte, Estima and Pentland Ivory all of which show a good degree of resistance to these slugs. I also use the biological control nematode Phasmarhabdites hermaphrodita. True this may prove quite expensive but it works brilliantly against slugs, poses no environmental problems (it is a naturally occurring parasite of British slugs) and is perfect for controlling any slug that spends time underground. If you time the applications so that the crops, flowers or other plants are protected while they are at their most vulnerable, it shouldn’t be too much of an outlay. Slug and snail traps also work well, whether you buy your own ‘Slug Pubs’ or make them by plunging plastic beakers into the soil close to susceptible plants and then part filling them with beer. I once did a mini trial on Gardeners’ Question Time to see which beers slugs and snails liked best, and Guinness came out tops....with alcohol-free lager proving least popular! I also find that

50

milk (stale works well) is good, and if you add a small quantity of grain or porridge oats to the liquid, the pests come in at an amazing rate. Do make sure that you leave a centimetre or so of the rim of the beaker protruding above the soil level as this will greatly reduce the number of beneficial creatures such as ground beetles that inadvertently fall in to the traps. Upturned half grapefruit skins or even large cabbage leaves can also be used as traps, but remember to empty or replace these daily or else the slugs and snails will re-enter the garden. If you create barriers around plants this can help, but I find it less reliable. My preferred materials are cocoshell (the mulching material), pine needles and crushed shells (e.g. oyster shell sold by poultry feed suppliers). But whatever you use do remember to put it in a complete circle around the base of the plant, not just a ring or the slugs may simply come up inside the ring and of course check it regularly, replenishing the material as necessary. So before they start to really get a hold, show them who is boss, and take action straight away: • Encourage wildlife such as ground beetles, birds and hedgehogs as these may help to keep numbers down. • Create barriers around particularly susceptible plants. • Buy or make slug traps. • If growing potatoes concentrate on earlies and lift these as soon as possible. • Grow varieties of potato that show some resistance to attack. • Use the biological control as a soil drench to control slugs (not snails) • Attach copper strip around the circumference of pots containing slug susceptible plants. • Go on night-time slug and snail hunts. • In late autumn collect up snails from their hibernating places. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and make Veg Growing Easy. Just select the vegetables you’d like to grow and you’ll receive garden ready veg plants PLUS every week Pippa emails you hints, tips and advice about your chosen veg. From just £39 for up to 66 garden-ready plants, 6 packets of seed and the weekly emails. Pippa’s website now also offers a great selection of growing frames, cloches, raised bed kits and biological controls. WPL
