Welcome to

our August edition Dear All, Wasn’t the weather in July absolutely fabulous? We managed weeks of endless sunshine and it certainly took the stress out of event planning with gazebos being used for shade as opposed to keeping the rain off! We unfortunately had to cancel the local Malden Fortnight Dog Show – a very wise decision as the day was really baking hot. As you may already know, The Worcester Park Traders Association (WPTA) was re-launched in 2013. They have received funding from the Outer London Fund, a £2M regeneration project for North Cheam and Worcester Park to boost the vibrancy and vitality of our local high streets - the aim is to support local business activity and growth. The WPTA are organising a family fun day on 31st August and would love to welcome as many residents as they can. So why not put it in your diary and go along 11-3pm in Central Road. For more information www.wpta.co.uk Last month saw the retirement of Mr Roger Easthope. He joined Cheam Common Junior School as Deputy Head Teacher in 1988. He also taught Year 5 classes during his early years with the school. From the start, Mr Easthope became involved in numerous activities both within and outside of school hours, including managing the boys’ school football teams and the schools’ athletic teams. Mr Easthope was appointed Headteacher of Cheam Common in April 1997. During his headship, he has steered the school through 3 OFSTED with Cheam Common achieving Outstanding in each due to his drive, vision and supportive staff!. We wish him well! I hope you enjoy our August edition. Lots of great articles and advertisers – thanks, as always to everyone who has contributed. Best wishes Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisher P.S. Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when replying to adverts and get in touch by 17th August if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the September edition(s).

History

Builders at work – 475 years ago

This month we look back 475 years to the summer of 1538, and the early stages of the building of Nonsuch Palace. The Palace was constructed on the site of the church and village of Cuddington, close to the angle in the avenue through what we now call Nonsuch Park. Its primary purpose was as a hunting lodge for Henry VIII, and it had two deer parks – the Little Park around the Palace, and the Great Park, which eventually became known as Worcester Park, and covered the area stretching from the London Road to Central Road, The Avenue and Walsingham Gardens (with some variations over time). By 1538 travelling had become irksome to Henry, and he had decided to establish a new hunting estate within easy reach of London. He already had a suitable residence on which the forest would be centred, at Hampton Court. This had been built by Henry’s powerful minister Cardinal Wolsey, but

when Wolsey fell from favour Hampton Court became a royal residence. Henry moved in during 1530, and soon began to enlarge it, adding a Great Hall 106 feet long. Hampton Court was large enough to accommodate the whole court, and Oatlands, which Henry began constructing at Weybridge, provided an outpost in the western part of his new forest. Henry wanted something more, however: a building which at the practical level would be an intimate hunting lodge, a “privy palace”, but which would also serve the symbolic purpose of portraying the House of Tudor, newly-secured in 1537 by the long-awaited birth of a prince, as one of the great royal houses of Europe and an inheritor of the Classical ideals of virtue. And Cuddington was the place in which he chose to build it. The king’s new hunting estate was formally established in 1539 by act of Parliament, as the Honour of Hampton Court. Parts of the estate, such as the land around Nonsuch, became Parks, owned by the king himself and reserved almost exclusively for deer. The remainder of the Honour, although remaining in other hands, became subject to forest laws which, as in the New Forest, protected the deer which roamed it (although, as in the New Forest, much of the land was not ‘forest’ in the modern sense of being densely planted with trees). From 1540 the Honour stretched from the Epsom and Walton Downs to Wandsworth and Battersea in the east, and Walton-on-Thames in the west. In the summer of 1538, Richard Codington and his wife

Elizabeth, the last of the line of the de Codyngton family who had owned Cuddington manor for three centuries, surrendered it to the king, and were given in return an estate in Suffolk. By this time, work had already begun on site. On 22nd April 1538, two clerks began work. By 29th April, six freemasons, two bricklayers and six labourers had joined the payroll. During the summer, the workforce increased rapidly: the list of men present on 12th August comprised 47 masons, 98 bricklayers, 10 chalk-diggers, 114 carpenters, 30 sawyers, 12 carters, a scaffolder, a hodmaker, four clerks and 167 labourers. These workmen came from a wide area: masons were paid to travel as far afield as Herefordshire and Northamptonshire to press men into service. The building materials, too, came from many sources: during the summer of 1538 over 3,500 one-ton loads were brought from the recently-dissolved Merton Priory, and more stone was brought by boat from London to Ditton. Tiles came from Kingston and Streatham; timber was selected in woods as far away as Bookham and Newdigate, and as near as Rutherwick copse (in the Riverhill area of Worcester Park); scaffolding was brought from Dorking, and fencing from many of the parishes around Dorking and Reigate. Even the residents of Cuddington could benefit from the situation: Thomas Fenner of Cuddington sold three

hand-barrows at 4d each, and Thomas Carpenter was paid nearly £15 for elm board, firewood and straw. Kilns were built at Nonsuch for burning bricks and lime; they were located near the banqueting house and the present Mansion House; three men from Stoke D’Abernon were paid for producing 600,000 bricks at a rate of 2s per thousand. By September 1538, the foundations of the Inner Court had probably been largely constructed, and the building of the walls begun; metal and timber for the window frames had already been purchased, and the hall of the manor house had been re-tiled so that it could be used for accommodation (whether for the builders or for a possible royal site inspection is uncertain). In the early 1540s, work continued, notably on the decoration of the Inner Court; by November 1545, expenditure on the palace reached £24,536 7s 7d. These details are drawn from the building accounts, which survive for the period April to September 1538, and were published by John Dent in his book The Quest for Nonsuch, a detailed and very readable history of the Palace first published in 1962, three years after the Palace was excavated, and reprinted by the London Borough of Sutton Libraries and Arts Services in 1981. Our pictures this month show the south (garden) front of the Inner Court of the Palace, from John Speed’s

Ruth Jemmett Writes People in glass houses Ruth Jemmett Muses On The Joy Of Buying A Greenhouse The excitement surrounding the arrival of the new royal baby has been infectious. A birth - royal or otherwise - is usually a time for celebration . I am sure that like me (unless you aren’t keen on the blue-blooded brigade) you will wish The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge all the best as they confront the world of sleepless nights and mountains of nappies. As we are already riding on a wave of British pride after a stunningly successful Olympic Games, followed by Andy Murray’s amazing triumph at Wimbledon, we are surely now allowing ourselves to be a little happier than usual. I have to tell you that I am awaiting a new arrival at my home in Salisbury Road - albeit not of the human kind, and am agog with childish anticipation. I have ordered a greenhouse. I am an avid gardener, and over the years I have become more and more adept at snipping cuttings from plants of all descriptions, and succeeding in making them grow. It hasn’t been an easy journey, as I am not a fan of chemicals, which, of course, has meant that rooting powder hasn’t been on the agenda. It has been a rocky path, filled with under-watering, over-watering, and the invention of many a rude word. However, as time has passed, and with the assistance of tips from gardening friends and various magazines, I have learnt how to encourage my little green friends to multiply. My laden plant pots have now become rather intrusive, as they vie for space in my kitchen lean-to, on my patio, and in the garden shed. (No - I know my new addition to the family will not be in the same league as a new baby, but it’s all about the excitement accompanying propagation of a species, isn’t it?!). The time has come when I am getting frustrated at trying to find a place for yet another pot. In summer parts of my home resembles The Day Of The Triffids, and as burgeoning blooms seem to hit me in the face at every turn, I know that things have got to change. I always swore that I wouldn’t become a typical older person. When I was a girl I was a bit of a quiet rebel, refusing to follow the norm. (When I attended my convent all those years ago I once nearly gave

a nun apoplexy as I removed my dainty boater hat and replaced it with a crash helmet before I leapt on the back of a boyfriend’s motorbike to go home. Well, I was only fourteen at the time ….). I promised myself that when I got to ‘a certain age’ I would never invest in carpet slippers, or nod off in the afternoon unexpectedly, and would certainly never buy the ultimate symbol of a boring pensioner’s life - a greenhouse. I am sorry to admit that I have now ticked all three of those boxes, along with showing other signs of taking the downward path, , including forgetting people’s names, having a fondness for firm chairs, and constantly looking for my glasses. As the time for the arrival of my glassy acquisition gets nearer I feel that I am becoming a real old W.A.G. No - not a ’wife and/or girlfriend of a famous person, but Woman And Greenhouse. I keep on finding myself engrossed in articles about automatic ventilation systems. My knowledge about buying the right sort of staging for the green house is second to none, and I am a veritable bore when discussing the merits of various seed-trays. I frequently find myself

engrossed in literature about greenhouse pests and different types of glazing. When I was young I used to go to sleep dreaming about Elvis Presley. At this age I have fantasies about the prospect of using Gro-bags to nurture tomatoes. When we are young our hormones dictate that we go forth and multiply. Once we are in our sixties our DWINDLING hormones (pass me the tweezers for dealing with all these unexpected hairs ….) dictate that we must make up for our deficiencies in populating the planet by increasing the life-force in different ways - i.e. by hurling seedlings in all directions, and talking to our green offspring as if they are recalcitrant children. (Or is it only me and Prince Charles that does it?). I am sometimes to be seen smiling benevolently at a bud and muttering “You clever little thing - I knew you could do it!” whilst my husband scurries off to find a telephone number for a Home For The Bewildered. I have several friends who are also keen gardeners, and I know that they are lurking with bated breath at the thought of sharing my new toy with me, happy in the knowledge that I will let them use the odd shelf in the greenhouse to plonk their own seed trays on. (Now, if I charged them for such a service I could be on to a nice little earner …….. No, no - I wouldn’t be that mean …). A few years ago I was a very active member of The Ewell Horticultural Association, and would frequently win prizes for my efforts. Competition was hot, and

on show days those of use who were exhibiting our parsnips, onions or whatever, would glare at each other, steely-eyed, across the dusty floorboards of a local hall , hoping that our fellow competitors’ produce wouldn’t measure up - visually or literally. There is something about the English nation that makes it impervious to emotion - unless the tear-ducts are forced into action by the news that one’s beetroots or sprouts are winners - or indeed, that we have lost at cricket. There is no doubt that it is deeply satisfying to grow things, whether it be pretty plants or food to eat. Despite the wonders of our technical world, there is something particularly uplifting about crunching into one’s own home-grown produce. It touches something in our primeval soul - and it certainly touches one in the wallet, as you can save a lot of money by ‘growing your own’. Now that I am officially a W.A.G., perhaps I should investigate other thrills to be experienced on my road to old age. Perhaps I can tut menacingly at young children, tell policemen how young they look, or throw Werther’s Originals at young people playing their music too loudly. Although, on second thoughts, perhaps I shouldn’t do the latter. You know what they say about people who live in glass houses!!! The shortcakes can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container. Fill with the cream and fruit 1-2 hours before serving.

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar then add the beaten egg and milk and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface and roll out to a 1cm thickness. Using an 8cm round cookie cutter stamp out 8 rounds, gently re-rolling the trimmings as necessary. Place on the prepared baking sheet, prick the top of each round lightly with a fork then sprinkle with a little caster sugar. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until risen and pale golden. Carefully transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. To make the filling, beat the mascarpone cheese with the icing sugar and cream until smooth. Push half the raspberries through a fine-holed sieve to make a puree. Slice each shortcake in half horizontally and top the bottom halves with the cream mixture, peach slices and remaining raspberries. Drizzle over the raspberry puree and top with remaining shortcake halves. WPLife

begins at home On Saturday 29th June the “Friends” of Worcester Park Library held a “Help The Heroes Day”. Volunteers served “FREE” tea and coffee and the ladies from The Craft Club made cakes. They raised over £100 for the Heroes charity by selling homemade cake and having a raffle. Also, we had a local Hero present, Major Ralph Rickard from Caldbeck Avenue. A retired Major who served in World War 2. (see attached photo). Magazines and papers which were donated and left over went to The British Legion. A big “Thank You” to those who came along to help or participated in the day. Volunteers Required Feel good about yourself and what you do. JULY 2013 UPDATE We are now more than half way through the year and coming to a point when the market generally changes. Just how it varies is different from year to year. The summer is historically viewed as a slower period, and some 15 to 20 years ago that would almost certainly have been correct, but the property market is no longer rigidly seasonal and we expect the summer of 2013 to be very busy. The current market The first half of the year has seen an extremely active indeed resulting in both a shortage of property supply and an increasing number of buyers who have failed to find the home they want. For many there is now considerable urgency to find in order to ensure they are settled in the right location for schools, work or similar and they will therefore continue their search in earnest throughout the warmer months. As a result of this mix of very determined buyers and the shortage of supply prices continue to edge upwards and are currently at, or in some instances a little above, the 2007 peak. In addition, and for a variety of similar reasons, we are finding that rental demand is very high at the moment and rental values are also strong. Increasingly we are helping clients who either move from owned to rented property or use the increasingly popular option of let to buy. At the time of writing many properties are attracting immediate attention and securing multiple offers within days (sometimes hours!) of coming to market. We expect that pattern to continue, and we don’t anticipate any slippage in prices. Traditionally vendors have tended to wait until the end of the summer holidays to put their property on the market but we suspect they may well be missing a trick if they do so this year. What will the autumn bring? Less serious buyers tend to put house hunting to the back of their minds over the summer and will return to the market with renewed enthusiasm in the autumn often with a strong resolve or need to move by the year end. Once the holidays are over and school term starts the market generally picks up very quickly indeed and for that reason we are finding that canny vendors are starting to put the wheels in motion already. Many vendors are coming to us for valuations now so that they have time to work through their finances over the summer, get a feel for the market and take a little time to ensure their home is presented in its best condition when they are ready to start selling. A few minor repairs, changes or a quick lick of paint can make an enormous difference to how quickly a property sells and, very importantly, the price achieved. If you are thinking of selling it is definitely the right time to contact us for some friendly advice. We are always happy to chat through any property queries you may have. In the meantime we wish all our readers a really great and, fingers crossed, sunny summer. The Team at Jackson Noon

separation creating points of entry for tree pests and diseases. We recommend the use of “ringing” around the base of the tree, this will cause a rapid dieback of the ivy mass without causing problems from pulling the climbers from the branches. This work is best done outside the nesting season for birds to avoid unnecessary disturbance. The best method is to use loppers to cut away the stems between ground and shoulder level right around the tree. Where the aesthetic form of the tree requires removal of the ivy mass then a careful climbing operation is required, this is most frequently undergone on trees that have weakened limbs form the excessive weight of the ivy mass. Chemical treatments such as Glyphosate are available to use on the ivy rootplate stems but this requires caution to avoid affecting the tree rootplate itself. Any ivy removed should be composted as bundles or mixed with other organic waste to decompose thoroughly. In conclusion, I feel that the whole debate on whether ivy is an attractive addition to a healthy tree is a matter of personal opinion; as a tree surgeon and a tree “lover” I side with trees having ivy under strict control so we can appreciate the tree trunk, branches and canopy as a complete form uncluttered by invasive climbers.

View from the City Getting real value out of the Royal Mail by Justin Urquhart Stewart Now I agree that RM should be brought back into private ownership, if only to get it away from the interfering politicians who have used and abused it over the years. It was almost twenty years ago that Heseltine tried and failed to get the beast freed and it was seen then as being a ‘privatisation too far’. Of course, this was before email and the internet and so RM was suffering from aggressive and effective competition from the Dutch and even the Malaysian mail services, as junk mail was

redirected through their now far more competitive companies. RM had no answer to this except to be seen as almost a dying business as volume was taken away and an unreformed cost base rotted the value from within. Now we are in a different era where the letter post has declined even more but the true value lies within the parcel delivery area, as internet shopping has delivered an unexpected boom and boon. I find it sadly amusing on Saturday mornings to stand watching husbands queue up at the local sorting office to collect their electronically and instantaneously ordered goods, probably all taking far longer than if they just gone to John Lewis in the first place. However, what this means is that RM these days probably has more attraction to Amazon rather than anyone else as they seem to increasingly dominate the online ordering of sundry goods. When it comes to the float though - oh dear have we really learnt nothing. Are we really going to go through the expensive (especially when you look at all the marketing that will be accompanying it) process of a popular public share offering? We know from previous experience that ‘popular share ownership’ didn’t work in creating a mass movement of public ownership. What it did create was a mass movement of share

punting on a few stocks ‘priced to go’. I have mentioned this before, but here is the perfect opportunity to resolve everyone’s issues with regards to handling state owned assets in a way that can be seen as being both cost effective and efficient, provides the government with its cash, frees the business to operate away from state control, and gives ownership in a fair and responsible manner to those who wish to participate. With a value of something in the region of £2-3bn, here is the first valuable asset which could be transferred into the UK’s own Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF). I say the first as I have mentioned before a host of other smaller value assets sitting in the government’s family silver caddy, which could then be also added to our SWF. This would therefore enable investors to invest into a portfolio of companies which the SWF would be able to manage effectively as an investment manager of a longer term private equity business. It could buy and sell stakes as it thought fit and the underlying shareholders would benefit from the successful operation of this portfolio of companies over the years. This would avoid the messy and fraught with danger route of trying to rush some of these asset sales in a manner determined by the government’s short term need for cash rather than good evaluation of market timing for the benefit of the business. At that point we could then add some or all of the other assets as the government needs to transfer them and achieve a more managed sale over time. These could include part of the holdings of RBS and Lloyds, as well as some of the more esoteric assets like the Met office, Urenco ( the nuclear processor in which the government has a one third stake) and the Student Loan Book. To offer the citizens of Britain a share or unit in a fund of national assets would be a far more attractive offer and one which would be seen to provide better longer term value for investors, rather than just a quick ‘pump and dump’ share sale. However, why not then take this further? Why not endow this SWF with a small stream of value from our energy assets, whether from fracking or from our now mature oil and gas fields? With this income stream you could then give the SWF a mandate for investment in UK business at all levels. Have we not heard the bleatings for a bank for small business (if you support the notion that SMEs are at the core of UK business)? Then here is your funded vehicle to enable this to take place. So let’s have Royal Mail deliver something really valuable - not just letters and parcels, not just a share flotation, but a strategic investment structure for the UK and its citizens.

Hot Favourites by Pippa Greenwood Our summer weather isn’t usually unbearably warm; in fact it is often pretty cool and a little bit of extra heat would be very welcome. With a little bit of planning and some careful planting, you could turn your garden into the hottest site out, regardless of the real weather. You can plant to create a mass of hot colours. All you have to do is plant beds, borders or containers full of hot reds, screaming yellows and glowing oranges. True, most of the planting is best done in the autumn, but a visit to a garden centre at this time of year will reveal a fabulous display of plants which can be put to good use in your garden now. For real energy and vibrancy, choose plenty of yellows and golds, including some of the golden rods (Solidago), which should be flowering well into September. I am a great fan of coreopsis, including the various forms of Coreopsis verticillata, which flowers well into the autumn and is unlikely to need staking. If you like to see flat looking flower heads in your garden then take a closer peep at some of the achilleas, including ‘Coronation Gold’. No late summer border is complete without the cone flowers or rudbekias with their deliciously bright, daisylike flowers - these should last you through October. For some screaming scarlets and other shades of red, consider growing the dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Lychnis chalcedonica. In damper areas you could use Lobelia ‘Queen Victoria’ or many of the other moisture-loving types of lobelia which produce huge spires of red flowers, so different from those tiny blue, pink and white bedding lobelias which are more widely grown. To make sure that your summer time plantings do well, take heed of the following tips: • If it’s a hot day, try to plant in early evening or at least late afternoon when the main heat of the sun has died down. • Always make sure that plants are really well watered before you put them in the ground. • Soak the compost thoroughly and make sure that it’s wetted right to the base before you begin. • Incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter, such

36

as garden compost, well-rotted manure or some proprietary compost from your garden centre, as this will help to retain moisture. • Once the plants are in position, water them in thoroughly - the water needs to go right down to where the plant needs it, at its roots. • Once the soil is moist, apply a good, deep mulch of 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm), all around the soil surface. This will help to keep moisture in, protect the plant roots from the heat of the sun and at the same time keep weeds at bay. Don’t forget to tend to your hot border again in the autumn, when you will find small versions of many of these plants readily available in garden centres, often at only a couple of pounds per pot and when you will also be able to plant some more warming oranges and reds using bulbs and corms. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September planting and regular advice emails from Pippa. Buy a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh and Envirofleece. VVoice

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

Bee-ing bats about wildlife

Bees. The EU has recently voted for a temporary ban on 3 of the 5 pesticides (neonicotinoids) linked to bee decline. This is good news, although it is only one of the many and complex reasons why we are losing so many of our bees - 20 species gone since 1900, and 35 more under serious threat. Intensive farming and urban development are significant factors, because they destroy habitat. Organic farming is much more ‘bee friendly’ and it would be good if local Councils could give some thought to where bee habitat could be created in public open spaces and along roadsides. Friends of the Earth are offering Bee Saver Kits visit foe.co.uk/bees or ring 0800 581 051 (Mon- Fri) for details. Many charities, and some companies, like Waitrose, B&Q and the Co-Op are working with Friends of the Earth on a campaign for more bee friendly practices.

Leaving ‘wilderness areas’ or sowing meadow flowers in parks, churchyards, gardens, schools and so on would help a great deal. Even a very small patch would be of huge benefit, such as a window box or patio pots. Recently, on a sunny afternoon spent strolling along the South Bank of the Thames, I saw a very large number of honey bees in a lavender patch - the most I have seen in a very long while. I stood for many moments enjoying the sight and sound of these busy little insects, something that was once a common feature of Summers and now is so rare. I had a similar

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

experience the week before in Greewich, spotting bees in the long grasses and wildflowers that seem to be being encouraged around and about the parklands there - all encouraging trends. Bats. We have 17 species of bat in the UK, with the smallest and most common being the Pipistrelle, and the largest being the Greater Mouse Eared (about the size of the palm of a hand). A single Pipistrelle can eat up to 3,000 insects in one night! They range over a variety of habitats, from woodland to suburban parks and gardens, beginning to fly about 20 minutes after sunset. Flies, midges and mosquitoes make up most of their diet. Good bat habitat contains water, trees and long grass - places where insects abound. About 25% of bat species worldwide are under threat of extinction, again, mainly through habitat loss. The key to a good habitat for a range of animals is insect life. And, for insects to thrive, you need water and a variety of flowering plants. This is what we are trying to create in Shadbolt Park, in and around the pond. As I write, it is abundant with insect life, birds and young amphibians and, I hope, bats, although, with the park locked after sunset, we

don’t see them. A bat survey a few years ago, before we built the pond, yielded evidence of Pipistrelles, so, hopefully, with increased insect life, due to the water and long grass, they are thriving there. Insects and plants are the most important life forms on this planet. Without them, nothing else could live. They support the entire web of life as we know it. When I stand and look out across the water of Shadbolt Park pond, and see how quickly Nature has responded to the opportunity we offered there, I feel hopeful, because I know that even the tiniest encouragement will bring plentiful rewards. Just by planting a tree or hedge or sowing wildflowers or leaving a patch of grass unmown, we can improve the biodiversity of an area in a very short time. May many more of us bee bats about wildlife and get active protecting and helping it. WPLife

Kids

Keep their brain active over the summer holidays A child’s summer holidays are often jam-packed with energetic activities including bike rides, swimming, dancing and football. But it is just as important to keep their mind active over the holidays as it is their bodies. Ensuring they continue educational activities throughout can mean they are confident, equipped and ready to tackle new work when they go back to school. Established for over 50 years, daily study of the Kumon programmes can make all the difference when it comes to keeping the brain active between school terms, as well as throughout the year. As a new school term approaches, it’s especially important that your child gets to grips with the core subjects of maths and English, as well as the vital learning skills which can take students beyond their school level. At Kumon, learning is always for the long run: the individualised programmes enable students to

progress to an advanced level, at their own pace, ensuring they maximise their ability and begin to realise their unlimited potential. Through the maths and English programmes, Kumon will nurture your child’s independent study skills, so they can apply this approach to all subjects and outside of school too. Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. Your child will therefore be equipped with the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others. Your child will initially start at a comfortable level, with a focus on building a strong foundation in the way they study; they will develop invaluable study skills such as concentration, pace and rhythm, before progressing to more advanced work. The summer holidays provide an ideal opportunity for your child to settle into their new routine of daily Kumon study, before getting off to a flying start in the new school year. Jessica Grante at the Stoneleigh study centre, says, “Most children attend school for just 190 days in the year, with the summer holiday manifesting as an approximately 45 consecutive day break in learning and routine. This is a potentially dangerous time for noticeable relapses in those gains steadily reinforced throughout the Autumn, Spring & Summer terms, with students often presenting in September with a lower National Curriculum attainment level than that which they ended the previous academic year! Such relapses can be avoided by maintaining a daily study habit at a ‘just right’level, i.e. achievable at a slight stretch, as afforded by the Kumon individualised maths & English study programmes.” Kumon Educational is the UK’s/Ireland’s largest supplementary education provider, with more than 69,000 students studying at 680 study centres. The Stoneleigh Study Centre is located at the 4th Ewell (Nonsuch) Scout Hall, Bluegates off London Road, KT172SA with classes running on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the summer holiday For more information, or to book a Free Assessment, contact Jessica Grante on 020 8330 6195 or email Stoneleigh@kumoncentre.co.uk WPLife

BBC2 has a season on Tudor history; the V & A has an exhibition of Tudor Art and Buckingham Palace is showing portraits exploring Tudor fashion. The local resident, however, does not need to travel to London to appreciate some of Tudor history. An amazing model of the original Nonsuch Palace, built by Henry VIII to celebrate the birth of his son Edward – so important to the Tudor dynasty – is on view every Sunday 2 – 5 p.m. in the Gallery of the Mansion, Service Wing entrance, Nonsuch Park. The site is marked on the Northern side of the Park by three tall pillars which now stand as the only physical evidence of this amazing building. They are as three sentries guarding a bygone age.

In addition, a unique and important collection of stained glass amassed by Samuel Farmer, owner of the present Mansion in the early 1800’s, features one particular panel commemorating the marriage of Jane Seymour to Henry VIII – only 11 days after the execution of Anne Boleyn! These are just a few of the treasures on view in the Nonsuch Mansion Service Wing Museum open on Nonsuch News “National media focus on the Tudors/local 2nd & 4th Sundays in the month (9th and interest in Tudor history on our doorstep in 23rd) 2 – 5 p.m. Combined entry to Gallery & Nonsuch Park.

Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics. ‘Breathtaking’ The Guardian ‘A beautiful work of art that everybody should see’ The Times Creative Learning: Richmond Theatre & Libraries Poetry Group Tue 27 Aug

Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving

The local policing model The MPS is changing how we operate in your community to ensure that we provide you with a more effective and consistent police service wherever you live in London. Our Safer Neighbourhoods Teams (SNTs) will be the foundation of how we deliver local policing and we are transferring 2,600 officers into SNTs from other MPS units to support these changes. These enlarged SNTs will adopt a broader role in cutting crime, supporting victims and tackling offending. Your SNT will be available seven days a week, as well as evenings and will be at the heart of directly addressing the majority of crimes and incidents that concern your community. Each SNT will be led by a Neighbourhood Inspector who will be responsible for all local policing matters. SNTs will continue to provide a recognisable presence in the community and each ward will have a dedicated, named police officer and a dedicated police community support officer who will work exclusively within that ward addressing priorities identified by those living and working within the ward. In Worcester Park these will be PC Luke Lazell & PCSO Gary Weaving. In Nonsuch these will be PC Richard Haining & PCSO Wendy Stephens. Additional police constables, police community support officers, special constables and volunteers will also work across a ward providing extra support in addressing local concerns. For the residents of Worcester Park and Nonsuch Wards (Sutton Borough), that means each ward will have 1 Police Sergeant, 3 Police Constables, 2 Special Constables and 2 Police Community Support Officers. However these extra officers, unlike the dedicated officers, will, when required, work across other neighbouring wards on the borough. This ensures we are putting our resources in the right place at the right time to address any concerns as they arise. Additionally all secondary schools that wish to have one will be provided with a Safer Schools Officer to work closely with teachers and pupils on a range of priorities affecting young people. Whilst on the subject of personnel, your new Police Sergeant is Colin Buchan. We are pleased to welcome him from Sutton North ward with his wealth of experience. Not only has Colin been a Traffic Officer, but in his 2 years as Sgt at Sutton North ward his team achieved a 27% reduction in ‘Total Notifiable Crimes’ and a huge 60% reduction in ‘Anti Social Behaviour’. SNTs will work closely with and draw assistance from other borough based officers including: 1. Emergency response and patrol teams; who will respond to urgent calls and disorder as well as undertaking targeted patrols to prevent crime 2. CID teams; who will investigate serious crimes 3. Community Safety Units; who will address issues such as hate crime and domestic violence 4. Uniformed tasking teams; who will undertake proactive operations to reduce crime and preserve public order. Each borough will continue to be led by a Borough Commander of either Chief Superintendent or

Superintendent rank. Borough Commanders will work closely with their local community to ensure that local policing reflects and meets the needs of the community. Your local borough team are a part of a wider MPS presence in your community. In addition there are a large number of MPS officers, in specialist units, who provide support to you and your community whenever required. Your Neighbourhood Inspector and Borough Commander will call upon the support of these specialist units, whenever required, to ensure that we provide the most effective possible response to any situation. Boroughs are also supported by the ability to know where our resources are at all times and be able to send them where they are needed, and by a range of behind the scenes teams such as human resources, intelligence gathering, training and other key supporting functions. Sutton Borough’s SNT’s are divided into ‘cluster’s’, meaning that if your team is on a Rest Day you will still be able to make contact with someone should you have a concern. The Worcester Park & Nonsuch contact details remain the same. REMEMBER: REMOVE THE OPPORTUNITY - DETER THE BURGLAR See you next month. WPLife

This very popular event attracts about 10,000 visitors every year. It is one of South London’s best days out. There will be over 100 stalls including local craft, farmers’ market stalls, interactive demonstrations, voluntary groups and local sustainability initiatives. We also have a healing area which demonstrates therapies and offers treatments. Children’s activities include: cycle obstacle courses; face painting; t-shirt painting, circus skills; crafts and other games. The Fair offers a range of local artistic talent including; the Main Stage which showcases local rock, pop and young bands; the Music Café with acoustic folk, blues, country and more; and The Performing Arts Marquee which entertains with an eclectic selection of local artists and speakers.

The fair boasts a great range of tasty catering from Spanish paella, French crepes and Caribbean food, to organic curry, Thai noodles and fair trade coffee. The bar will be back with a range of real ales. Or relax at the Music Café with a cup of tea and slice of home made cake baked by the Women’s Institute. It’s a really affordable day out.
