history
In our series looking at The Avenue, we reach St. Mary’s Church, at the top of the road, and we take a look at the earlier iron church, which stood where the lawns are today between the lych-gate and the church. As soon as development began in the 1860s in the ‘parish without a church’, as Cuddington had been since 1538, the new residents wanted a church, and naturally the preferred site was in The Avenue, the new centre of population, nearly two miles from the site of the medieval St. Mary’s in Nonsuch Park. The goal of providing a permanent church was, however, to take almost thirty years to achieve. When the Landed Estates Company bought the area around The Avenue in 1865, the plot between The Avenue, St. Mary’s Road and Royal Avenue was excluded, being earmarked as the site for a church.The Company paid for an iron church to be put up, and in November 1866 the Bishop of Winchester licensed the Revd Thomas Smith to take services. The first services were held on 13 January 1867, with sermons by the Vicars of Malden and Ewell; a good attendance was reported despite a fall of snow the previous day. So far no photographs of the Iron Church have been found, but when there was a proposal in the 1890s to buy a replacement temporary church, a catalogue was obtained from Humphreys Iron Churches, and one of our illustrations shows one of the types on offer, which may perhaps be similar to the 1860s building. Thomas Smith remained in charge until 1878. Later that year the vicar of Malden, Canon William Chetwynd Stapylton, agreed to oversee the Sunday services and pastoral care. He already had responsibility for Malden and Chessington, so the Revd Henry Wale, an army officer before being ordained, was appointed curate in charge of the Iron Church. Sir Alexander Harris, despite his liking for Mr Wale, recalled that “the iron church was quite good as temporary buildings go…, but its status was far from acceptable to residents who were accustomed to an organised parish.” By 1884 the income from pew rents was only £135 per annum, but the annual expenses were £200. Canon Joseph Brereton offered to pay half the stipend of a clergyman if he would help manage his school (in The Avenue). John Hunter, as churchwarden, asked the Revd William Hales “to undertake the duties of the Iron Church here after next Sunday up to Christmas next… I hope that you will undertake the duties of the Church permanently, but, if you do this, I stipulate… that you should reside in the

An Iron Church in The Avenue by David Rymill neighbourhood.” Mr Hales replied “I can only hope that our relative position will then… make plain to me the duty and pleasure of coming to reside in or close to Worcester Park.” By 1888 the insolvency of the school had left Mr Hales without half his stipend, and the Church Plot was still privately owned, preventing any campaign for a permanent church being launched. Matters now got worse, as Sir Alexander recorded: “On a bright Sunday morning early in May, 1892, when the congregation assembled… we found that there was a guard at the padlocked gates and no access to the church door was possible without dislodging the intruders”… the plot had been sold to Mr W J Bennett, and no covenant had been included to secure the position of the church. “Presently Mr Gilbert came up to me and suggested that we should make a charge and force the passage. ‘We shall have an assault and u

An Iron Church in The Avenue by David Rymill battery’ he said ‘but no matter.’ Mr Hunter, however, being a wise and sound lawyer, over-ruled any physical effort.” Instead, Mr Hales conducted the full morning service in the double drawingroom at Sir Alexander’s house, The Hermitage in Cleveland Road. A compromise was reached, and services continued as normal. In the following year, the tide turned. In August, the Church Plot was purchased, for £500, and it was possible to plan for a permanent church. John Alick Thomas, who lived in The Avenue, drew up plans, and the foundation stone was laid on 11 August. Services continued in the Iron Church, latterly taken by the Bishop’s chaplain, the Revd John Glubb. In July 1895 the new church was ready.The view we see as we walk up The Avenue today is much as the architect intended, but originally only three of the intended five bays of the nave (the main seating area) were built, and a temporary west

wall and porch were added, as shown in the photograph. The last service was held in the Iron Church on 14 July and the new church was due to be consecrated on the 17th, but the Bishop’s illness prevented this. The first services, nonetheless, were held by Mr Glubb on 21 July. The Revd William Layton was chosen as the first vicar; he was licensed in August, and the church was dedicated by the new Bishop, Rt Revd Randall Davidson (later Archbishop of Canterbury), on 20 November. The new church was dedicated to St. Mary, just as its predecessor had been. In 1896 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, the Bishop and the vicar brought to an end the centuries when Cuddington had been a parish without a church, and formally declared the new St. Mary’s the parish church in substitution for the church demolished in 1538.

Music to my ears

by Ruth Jemmett I come from a theatrical family. My early years were filled with appearances in pantomimes and the constant sound of music. Both my late grandmother and mother were trained singers and pianists. Pianos were always in evidence in my young life and yet, surprisingly, I was never taught to play one. As time passed by I would enviously eye musicians, wishing that I too could possess such a talent. When I was in my thirties, and well settled in to marriage and motherhood, my husband and I became friends with a couple who lived nearby. The husband could play acoustic guitar and the first time I saw him playing I was filled with that “I wish I could play too” feeling. I decided to buy myself a guitar and wondered how I, as a left-hander, would cope. A friendly local music shop put strings on my shiny new instrument the “wrong” way round, and I bought a guitar chord book which I viewed with the help of a mirror so I could reverse what I was seeing. Before long I had mastered the basics of guitar playing and realised that the concept of “being musical” was a case of mind over matter - and a lot of practise! Primitive societies never question whether someone is musical or for that matter - artistic. It is invariably assumed that everyone will join in singing, playing instruments or creating artwork. Our supposedly advanced civilisation often seems so keen to attain perfection that a thoughtless comment from a parent or a sarcastic remark from a teacher can sometimes make a child believe that they are useless at something. I believe that creative talent is built into our genes (we wouldn’t have survived on this earth for so long if we weren’t hard-wired to stretch our imaginations beyond the practical) and that with the right opportunity and encouragement people can become much cleverer than they think themselves to be. Once I had schooled myself into remembering the notes on a stave I was then able to desecrate “Puff The Magic Dragon” very slowly, but recognisably. Spurred on by my success (not quite “Book The London Palladium” territory! - but I was happy!) I learnt how to strum chords and fingerpick. Before long I could enjoy accompanying friends in small musical groups, and realised that a whole new world had opened up to me - even if I WAS zooming towards forty!.

I then invested in a second-hand piano and taught myself to play with two hands. I could already read the right hand clef notes of course so I was half-way there. Over the next few years life generally got busier.. My writing career took off and I also got involved in helping to run five charitable committees. Somehow, no matter how busy I was I found time to buy more instruments and teach myself how to play them. In the last thirty years I have managed to ruin many a fine tune on a variety of recorders, guitars (eat your heart out Hank Marvin - even a post menopausal woman can play “Apache”!), pipes, flute, xylophone, harmonica, accordian, concertina, Irish Harp, Pedal Hark, ukulele, banjo, and more .recently, violin. The more observant of you will realise that all violinists in an orchestra move their bows in the same direction and therefore have to play in a right-handed way. Being left-handed was a distinct disadvantage, but I wouldn’t be beaten. I bought a conventional violin and spent a long time training my brain and body to play the opposite way round. I play at the standard of an eight year old, but thoroughly enjoy it. Somewhere in my fantasy world I see myself performing at Carnegie Hall, but in reality will never perform on the instrument anywhere other than the front hall of my bungalow! Many people say to me “I don’t know how you find the time to do all the things you do!” I believe that if we really enjoy something we MAKE the time to do it. I have learnt to play all my instruments by cramming ten minute practise sessions in between writing, cooking, cleaning, looking after

In Pursuit of Happiness

by Justin Urquhart Stewart Economists come in all shapes and sizes. It seems that the theories of economics can also be applied to explain the most varied of topics: from examining why most drug dealers still live with their mothers; how best to master love and marriage; to predicting how many gold medals the US might win in the next Olympic Games. However, for an academic subject known as ‘the dismal science’, it seems ironic that economists are currently employed in explaining, measuring, and improving happiness. Americans of course are well versed in the theory of this emotional state. They consider it as one their constitutional rights, stated in the United States Declaration of Independence; “……that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Only fairly recently have economists turned their incisive academic minds to a quantitative study of happiness, or “subjective wellbeing” (can’t you just feel the joie de vivre with which they are imbuing the topic) and quality of life. Politicians, even the British ones of (usually) a more reserved nature, are looking to have public policy be more influenced by happiness economists. However, in their haste to announce their pro-happiness stance, politicos have ended up saying, well, not much at all. The UK government’s ‘Action for Happiness’ website states; “Action for Happiness is a movement for positive social change. We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone.” I’m not sure who isn’t in that group - it leaves me wondering whether other, rival movements go around campaigning for societal misery with the help of a small and secretive section of the public. The website also claims that while our incomes have increased for the past fifty years, we are still no happier than we were five decades ago. So then, is it true that ‘money can’t make you happy’? This is a worthy topic for consideration; the problem, unsurprisingly, is that economists disagree on whether higher incomes do really lead to advanced levels of well being. At the Aspen Ideas Festival a fortnight ago, a couple of highly reputable economists, Justin Wolfers and Robert Frank, had exactly this debate. The former tried to take apart the ‘Easterlin Paradox’ which states that within societies, richer people are happier than poorer people but richer societies are not happier than poorer societies. This has given rise to the popular but counter-productive view that for rich countries at least, focusing on growing GDP is akin to treading water. What people really care about is their status relative to

the city
others and growth in absolute income for everybody cannot raise everybody’s relative position.
To use an example, this suggests that if you make £10,000 a year more than your neighbour, and during your country’s economic hot streak both of your incomes rise. If you still only earn £10,000 more than your neighbour, then neither you nor your neighbour have increased your relative happiness. For his rebuttal of the belief that for a rich country, the obsession with growth in GDP is an error, Wolfers turned to considerable data amassed by Gallup surveys of happiness conducted in 155 countries. With a high degree of correlation, he showed that higher incomes really do seem to make people happier. But even here there seems to be an argument for relative happiness. An extra 10 units of money will not increase happiness but a 10 percent increase in income will. It is still income relative to what one was making before. However, Wolfers’ most important point was that within countries, richer people are happier than poorer people and globally, rich countries are happier than poor countries. GDP growth does exactly what it says on the tin. Intriguingly though, Wolfers left room for the counter-argument put forward by Robert Frank, professing that while he had data to prove that absolute income mattered, he did not possess enough data to convince everyone that relative income didn’t matter. Frank contended that status mattered too – when people find they can’t keep up with the Joneses, it is natural to be discontent. Moving from a poor nation to a rich one isn’t a ticket to happiness if it means having much less than the people around you - leaving you feeling relatively dirt poor. To illustrate he points to East Germany, Berliners on one side of the city could pick up television signals from the West and see exactly what they were lacking. The truth behind the quest for happiness probably lies somewhere in between Frank and Wolfers’ views. The pursuit of economic growth remains a worthy objective for countries, but perhaps it shouldn’t be the sole measure. How about looking at a combination of both GDP and GNH (Gross National Happiness)? For pure politicians, this might not appeal - one can’t win votes with charts and tables. The man-in-the-street cares about tangible contentment, not ethereal statistics; and the politician cares (in theory) about the man in the street. Pure economists will have to put up with policy speeches punctuated with trite phrases of “maximising subjective wellbeing” – but they have to do that anyway. In my view, it’s probably a good idea to cut down on campaigning solely on abstract ideas of happiness, hope and ‘winning the future’. Just look how well that’s working out for President Obama. We shouldn’t ever abandon these ideals though – after all, they’re a fundamental part of being human. WPLife

Geocaching The GPS
www.geocaching.com, Fancy a fun-filled activity all the Family can enjoy? Then give Geocaching a try. “Why don’t you switch off your TV set and go and do something less boring instead?” was the irritatingly catchy theme-tune from popular children’s television show “Why Don’t You?” Nowadays, “TV” would have to be replaced with Games-console/Laptop/ Mobile phone or the latest must-have electronic gadget we can’t live without. But there is a way to convince the whole family out of the house with an electronic device whilst enjoying a good walk or bike ride in the countryside: Geocaching. This involves tracking down hidden items, or caches, with a GPS device and recording your find.You log-on to the Internet to find the coordinates of the cache, and then use your eyes to locate its exact whereabouts – like a good old-fashioned treasure hunt. Look online and you’ll find videos of cleverly hidden caches – inside sawn-up logs in forests, stuck-up pipes by rivers and even stuffed in plastic bricks as part of the wall of a disused building. They’re usually made up of a logbook sealed in a plastic box or ammo-case, along with small trinkets to keep or swap for something of similar value, and are always found outdoors. And if you’re really lucky, you might come across a “trackable” – a numbered coin or dogtag that’s moved from cache to cache. Each time it is moved, its serial number is logged on-line so it can be tracked. Bought online for a couple of pounds, some have been known to travel more than 10,000 miles over 3 continents. Geocaching started in the US after early GPS-enthusiast Dave Ulmer planted a bucket filled with videos, books, software and a slingshot, together with a logbook and pencil, in woods near his house. After posting the coordinates online on May 3rd 2000, his package was found twice within two days after word spread rapidly among the online community. The official Geocaching website launched in September 2000 with the coordinates for 75 caches across the world listed on it. The craze soon took-off and today there are over 1.3m caches hidden in over 100 countries across the globe, with 5 million registered users. And it’s really simple to start Geocaching – just create a free membership on www.geocaching.com, type in your postcode to find caches near you, invest in a GPS

device or mobile phone with GPS capability and that’s it, you’re ready. Most GPS devices take you within 6-20 feet of the object so be prepared to spend a while looking for the cache when you arrive there - this is the bit that the kids always love the best. And remember to always respect the countryside where the cache is found – don’t leave litter or damage the environment. So for a fantastic family day out that doesn’t cost a fortune, often set in stunning countryside, why don’t you give Geocaching a go? It’s certainly less boring than watching TV. Be careful of Muggles near a cache though – Muggles are nongeocachers who are sometimes near caches, such as people innocently walking their dog. On 22 June, the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell unveiled the new sign board at Shadbolt Park pond. During her short speech she mentionned being a member of the Surrey Wildlife Trust,which seemed very appropriate! We then did some pond dipping and discovered quite a variety of life in the water:whirligig beetles, daphnia, waterboatmen, newt tadpoles, froglets, mayfly and damselfly larvae, pond skaters, adult damsel flies and dragonflies and adult smooth newts. Fascinating bug facts Whirligig beetles congregate in large numbers and scurry about the water surface in a random pattern. When handled, they give off an apple-like odour. They are unique

Water Boatmen (also called Paddle Bugs) come to the surface to grab air bubbles and then dive to the bottom. They prefer weedy shallows and can tolerate polluted water. Adults mate in flight, eggs are laid in aquatic vegetation and the young (nymphs) feed on algae, weed and the larvae of some other species. Damselflies are a bit smaller than dragonflies; they can land but not walk and can fold their wings up over their backs (whereas dragonflies cannot). The nymphs feed on daphnia, mosquito larvae and other small aquatic organisms and have large, external gills like 3 fins at the end of the abdomen. Insects are an important food source for many animals, so anything that encourages them has a beneficial effect on other species. Many birds which eat seeds have to feed their nestlings on insects and many insects cannot

Wildlife never ceases to amaze; - viewers of BBC Springwatch will have seen a landfill site heaving with life, even the highly endangered water vole! Among the reedbeds in the leachate ditches, was a thriving population of this enchanting little animal whose numbers have crashed alarmingly in recent decades due to habitat loss and mink predation. It is therefore surprising and heartening to find them at home amongst our garbage! Reeds are a natural cleaner of water, and therefore useful at sewage works. At Pitsea landfill site they purify the leachate ( which is rainwater polluted from percolating through the layers of decomposing rubbish). Apparently they clean it so well that Ratty can make his home there. Brilliant. The great thing about landfill sites is that, once they are full they cannot be built on, so can be managed as nature reserves! Perhaps this should give us hope that nature can recover from the damage we do, whenever we offer it the smallest opportunity to do so. Motorway verges, for example,

www.epsomdowns.co.uk Epsom Racing Staff Welfare (ERSW) (previously known as the Epsom Training and Development Fund (ETDF)) was created in 1999 with a view to being able to offer affordable accommodation particularly to young people embarking upon a career in horseracing in Epsom. Since then the charity has raised sufficient funds to be able to purchase two three bedroom houses enabling us to provide six racing stable employees with a home for as little as £70 per week. ERSW also provide compulsory back protectors for riding to all employees who need them as well as other welfare benefits. ERSW currently has two main fundraising events a year the Epsom Racehorse Trainers’ Open Day in the summer and the black tie Awards Dinner in the winter (see www. ersw.co.uk for more information). This year’s Open Day takes on a new format and is being split over 2 days – Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August.

On Sunday 28th from 9-10am, horses from Epsom training yards will be shown at exercise on the gallops, with interviews with the trainers and vets responsible for the care and training of these equine athletes. From 10am – 1pm a number of the training yards will be open to the public, providing the opportunity to see behind the scenes of a working racing stable and meet the racehorses themselves as well as the staff there. There will be extra attractions at some of the stables too including foals and youngstock and refreshments. There will be a complementary bus service from Derby Stables Road to the gallops and also around the stables. On Monday 29th the attractions that have previously taken place on the afternoon of the Open Day will be hosted at the Epsom Downs Racecourse Family Funday Raceday and these include pony rides, parade of ex-racehorses, Shetland Pony Derby, and hot shoeing demonstration. Some of the Epsom-trained racehorses that were seen in the stables on the previous day will also be running in races at the course that day. WPLife

Girlguiding in Worcester Park and Old Malden District is very much alive.
Girlguiding seeks to give girls a voice and provide a unique, girl-only space where they feel comfortable just being themselves. Our members, challenged by a girl-led programme that extends beyond badges, enjoy a spectrum of activities from international travel and outdoor adventure to pop-concerts and community action. For our youngest members aged five to seven we offer Rainbows. Rainbows have fun! They play games, have parties and make things while developing life skills. For girls aged seven to ten Brownies do it all! Their meetings are full of challenge, games and activities,

usually ones that the Brownies have suggested themselves. Guides are girls aged ten to fourteen. Being a Guide encourages girls to develop by undertaking challenges and pushing the boundaries of their experience. Our Senior Section for girls aged fourteen plus offers an exciting and flexible programme with a huge variety of challenges, activities and opportunities for personal development which could include helping as a Young Leader with a younger section. Girlguiding isn’t just for girls. Many volunteers give their time as Leaders or Assistant Leaders running units and get to see girls enjoying events and activities that they have organised. Other volunteers take on administrative responsibilities or help out on an occasional basis.We are always looking for more help to ensure we can continue to offer our members a full and varied programme and we can always find a role to suit! Wine to Dine
by Aret Kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin Everyone has their vice, or their once in a while treat to cheer them up and with the wet ‘summer’ weather as it is my choice is often a hearty calorie laden meal with one of my favourite, hard to resist red wines and great company. I’m talking about the kind of wines that really come into their own when paired with the right dishes, that are never less than 13% (I’ve had a Zinfandel that was 15.5%!) and bring out the very best in every spice and nuance of flavour. These wines were made for and deserve good food! The first on my list is an Argentine Merlot produced by Tapiz. Merlot has gotten a bad rap in recent years but its appeal is still hard to deny. The Oscar winning American movie ‘Sideways’, about wine and the Californian wine industry, actually managed to affect the sales of the

varietal after the main character, who hates the grape, famously stated that he would leave a restaurant if someone ordered Merlot. Ridiculous, but true! (It’s a great film by the way). Tapiz, however are enjoying a great deal of success with both their Malbec and Merlot in the Gaucho restaurant chain and worldwide and I think that the 2008 Merlot is particularly good. My favourite meal to match with this merlot is a Filet Mignon. It doesn’t overpower the relatively mild flavour of the dish, but the dark berry flavours and velvety smooth texture work so well with the beef. If serving with a Bearnaise sauce however, the Tapiz 2009 Chardonnay will be a perfect match. And then there’s Lamb. Lovely Lamb. I’m a huge fan of Lamb and even more so of Goat, but that’s another story! The strong, fragrant quality of a roasted rack of Lamb, lends itself to robust reds like an aged Bordeaux from France or a mature Rioja from Spain. My absolute first choice is the 2005 Fincas de Landaluce Rioja, which is aged in French Oak barrels for 15 months and is one of the best Rioja’s I’ve ever had! My husband absolutely hates mint sauce but I won’t be without it and this wine compliments it perfectly.The Fincas also works really well

with a Nigerian Shish Kebab like dish called Suya, which consists of highly spiced (red hot!) chunks of Goat meat, but I can’t get anyone to eat it with me! Anyone? Oh well.
And now for the Big Daddy, the Don of vice meal wine, the Barolo! This is a wine that you can pair with roast Bison, venison, Veal, Rabbit, Wild boar and Deer for goodness sake! Made entirely from the Nebbiola grape, which prospers almost exclusively in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy and unlike Pinot Noir or Syrah, no one has been able to achieve a really great Nebbiola anywhere else in the world! This Barolo also works like a dream with the cheese platter, especially old strong crumbly cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Old Gouda and old Cheddar, blue cheeses like Gorgonzola as well as with cheeses with a rich flavour like Fontina and Boschetto al tartufo. I’ve enjoyed this wine with Venison, Rabbit and Veal but for me it really works with highly peppered Nigerian roasted Goat dishes….anyone? Never mind. Win pairing for this month’s recipe (page 41) The best whites for all kinds of Cajun food are those whose flavour profiles include spice notes. For this pairing try a fresh South Eastern Australian Pinot Grigio. WPLife

Serves 4 Ready in 1 hr
1lb 9oz) monkfish fillet 2tbsp olive oil 1tsp lemon juice 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning 8 medium-sized waxy potatoes, such as Desiree Salt and freshly ground black pepper 225g (8oz) cherry tomatoes 1 lemon, sliced Sunflower oil for shallow frying Cut the monkfish into large chunks and place in a shallow roasting tin. Mix together the oil and lemon juice and pour over the fish. Sprinkle over the Cajun seasoning. Cover and set aside for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/ Gas 6. Place the unpeeled potatoes in a large pan of salted water. Bring to the boil and boil for 5 mins. Drain and leave to cool for 10 mins.

Cajun roast monkfish with potato rosti

Peel the skins off the potatoes and coarsely grate the potato flesh into a bowl. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Using your hands, divide and shape the grated potato into about 8 flat cakes. Place the lemon slices in the roasting tin with the monkfish and cook in the oven for 15 minutes. Add the cherry tomatoes and cook for a further 5-8 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the tomatoes are tender. Heat 30-45ml (2-3tbsp) oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Fry the potato rosti, in batches, for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown, adding more oil as necessary. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Arrange the potato rosti on serving plates and top with the roast monkfish, lemon slices and tomatoes. Pour over any juices left in the roasting tin and serve immediately. TOP TIP - If you’re not too keen on cajun then replace with a sprinkling of dried Italian herbs. WPLife

This month, Stagecoach Worcester Park and Cheam is celebrating being recognised as ‘Outstanding’ in its yearly school inspection. With a timetable of lessons featuring recent masterclasses from Take That choreographer Gareth Walker and X Men makeup artist Jane Maier, new principal Lucy Moorby has brought the school alive since she joined six months ago. Lucy has a strong heritage in performing arts and has appeared in many West End shows including Grease, Oh What a Night, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Oklahoma! Lucy also supported Samantha Janus in the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest. As you may be aware, crime figures for burglary and theft are up significantly across the country. The blame for this has been set squarely on the shoulders of the recent oppressive downturn in the financial climate. People are beginning to find life increasingly difficult because of additional financial burdens and what amounts to a decrease in income. Unfortunately, some people turn to crime. Worcester Park and Nonsuch wards have seen this increase also and we all need to work together to deter and prevent these crimes.We all need to be vigilant, observant and mindful of the way in which we secure our homes and property. Please read the following information and keep and refer to it when necessary. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way.
