Editor’s letter Articles

I’m sitting writing this in glorious weather and thinking how lovely my view looks in the sunshine (OK, I know everywhere does – but we’re a bit biased, aren’t we!). I’m not even going to look at the long term forecast and will happily assume that the sunshine is here to stay for our action-packed month of July, particularly after our soggy start to the Summer. This month’s issue of WPLife is packed full of details of forthcoming events around and about. There’s Malden Fortnight as well as the Belmont Festival and events taking place in Kingston and Sutton to name but a few – all will be great fun, come rain or shine! Or closer to home why not go along to St Mary’s Church on Saturday 7 July at 7pm where the choir will present a concert of light music for a summer evening, See page 8 for more information. As ever, please do get involved and support these wonderful celebrations. After all, 2012 is being dubbed the “Summer of Celebration” (maybe something to do with that big sporting competition also taking place in July and August just a few miles away in Stratford!!) so let’s join the party and have a ball wherever we go!

Music in Cuddington This month we look at the story of the Operatic Section of the Cuddington Players, as a tribute to Geoff Burton, the founding producer of the section, who died on 27th May. The Players had been formed under the leadership of Jack Wysehall as a drama group in 1953, originally performing in a marquee in Parker’s Field, off Royal Avenue, on the evening of the Summer Fair. In 1955 St Mary’s opened a permanent church hall on the corner of The Avenue and Royal Avenue, and this was to be the home of the Players for most of its existence. In 1958 an Operatic Section was added, at first consisting mainly of church members. Most rehearsals took place on Sundays after Evensong, which had been attended by almost all the members. The majority of the early productions were Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, but the Players also produced the world premières of Turpin and Morgan by Nigel Brooks and Robert Bowman, and in 1969 performed the near-grand opera Carmen. Margaret Rymill (née Batt), the first secretary of the section, recalls that, as producer, Geoff Burton “had a particular gift for devising imaginative settings for the chorus; for instance in Die Fledermaus (1962) the ladies were maids with mob caps and feather dusters, cleaning, and laying the table for dinner with a large white damask table cloth, cutlery and wine glasses. The chorus were also involved in some imaginative fight scenes. The highwaymen in Turpin had a fearsome sword fight, carefully timed to music; in Carmen the ladies, as factory girls, fought each other while singing an intricate chorus.” Some innovative sets were designed: “In Ruddigore (1961) the ancestral pictures have to come alive; these portraits, painted on roller blinds, were raised during a blackout to reveal the men behind dressed in exactly the same costumes as depicted in the paintings. In The Gipsy Baron (1965) one scene included a camp fire with ‘smoke’ produced from a boiling kettle beneath the stage.” One of our illustrations shows Geoff Burton conducting the finale on the last night of Ruddigore, 1961. Drama was not always confined to the stage: “In 1974 the costumes for the men in The Yeomen of the Guard

were hired from a firm in Edinburgh. They had not arrived by the first dress rehearsal and it transpired that they had been sent to Worcester instead of Worcester Park. Four members of the cast eventually collected them from Waterloo Station after midnight. But all was still not well – two yeoman’s jackets were missing. On the day of the first performance they were dispatched from Edinburgh, to reach Euston at 5.30 pm. A member of the cast found them in a costume basket on a motorised trolley being driven by a porter. He seized the basket and ran, pursued by the porter, to the parcels

office. He signed out the parcel (highly irregular), leapt into a taxi and, speeding to Waterloo, just caught a train to Worcester Park. The costumes reached the hall 25 minutes before curtain-up.” Our other illustration shows the Players’ production of The Yeoman of the Guard (David Mortimer, Dick Allen, Bob Rymill, Peter Woollatt and Ken Bullock are 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th from left). The Operatic Section remained active into the new millennium, latterly performing at the Adrian Mann Theatre, but closed shortly before its 50th anniversary. Geoff Burton had a wide range of musical interests. Whilst living in Worcester Park, he was a member of the choir at St Mary’s, and then played the organ in a number of Surrey churches, serving as organist at St Mary’s Church in Headley. In 1995 he and his wife Anne moved to Cornwall, and he remained active in musical circles. He became the Musical Director of the St Minver Silver Band, and despite battling illness he directed an ensemble of the band at a carol service in Porthilly Church on New Year’s Day. Musical activities continue at St Mary’s Church. On Saturday 7 July at 7pm the choir will present a concert of light music for a summer evening, and all are welcome. Tickets cost £5 on the door, and refreshments

will be provided. For more details about St Mary’s, which is situated at the top of The Avenue, please contact the Parish Office on 8337 4026. There’s still time to send in photographs of Diamond Jubilee street parties, as I hope to feature these next time. David Rymill david.rymill@hants.gov.uk 8330 6563 WPL

The winner takes it all - or do they? Ruth Jemmett’s thoughts on the Olympics and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

During the past few years so-called experts on education have tried to convince us that competition is a bad thing, and that little Jack or Jill will be permanently emotionally scarred if they become aware that life doesn’t give everyone equal talents. School sports days can now be bland affairs where no child can be named a loser. Hearty cries of “It’s the taking part that matters - not the winning!” ring across countless playing fields, probably giving a lot of children the thought of “I won’t bother to try, as we will all be given a lollipop as a prize anyway…”. Attending school is meant to be a preparation for adult life, and the sooner a child learns that the world isn’t fair, the easier they will find it! Of course no youngster wants to come last in a race. I should know. I was once that youngster at the nearby Gibraltar Recreation Ground in Ewell many years ago. I remember the ignominy of huffing and puffing to the finishing line last on a school sport’s day! Did I have a nervous breakdown because of it? No - because I knew that I could draw a picture better than anyone in my class. You win some, you lose some in this life. Get over it, trendy educationalists! The simple fact is that schooling is meant to give you a taste of what life has to offer. Some things you may excel at, others you may be hopeless at. Everyone is good at something, no matter how disadvantaged they might seem on the surface. My late son, who was profoundly physically disabled could beat the best of them at chess - and also loved to watch any kind of sport. The fact that he couldn’t join in sports didn’t make him angry and bitter. He loved the fact that he could always get special treatment at sports venues - and often pointed out to me . “Well Mum - at least I’ve always got a seat!” He made up for his lack of sporting prowess in other ways, and even won a cup at a local Horticultural show for growing a giant marrow. He was completely devoid of selfpity, and realised very early on that life is what you make it, whatever cards you are dealt. If you grow up thinking that life is an even playing field - literally or otherwise - you are in for a shock later on! We are fortunate enough to be hosting The Olympic Games in our country this year, and will doubtlessly be cheering on our young athletic hopefuls. What chance will our future generations have in such games if we rear them on the “Everyone gets a lollipop” way of thinking? The ancient Greeks were well aware that competitiveness is built into our D.N.A. when they instigated the first games in Olympia in 776 B.C. - and Darwin certainly had some strong views on the differences between all living things many centuries

10

later! The Olympic Games were then held every four years until A.D 393,and included competitions in literature, art, drama and music. Eventually they were abolished by The Roman Empire. Of course not many of us can aspire to Olympian standards, but how many of us are brave enough to admit that at one time during our youth, we DID have a misty dream about standing in First Place on that Olympic podium? When I was thirteen, and full of sporting ambition, I had that misty dream as I practised high-jump over a clothes line on a rain-sodden lawn, and received a broken wrist instead of a gold medal! As the American writer, Louisa May Alcott once said “Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them and try to follow them”. Perhaps, if I had looked at the clothes line, and HADN’T looked so high up I might not have been wearing a plaster cast for six weeks! The modern summer games were initiated again in 1896, and were held in Athens. The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix in 1924. The games were totally cancelled during the two World Wars. Eventually, forward looking members of The International Olympic Committee introduced The

Paralympics, bringing in a whole new dimension to our natural human urge to be a winner. When the 2012 Games commence in The British Isles on 25th July, let us hope that today’s children who will witness the spectacle, will be uplifted and inspired to emulate today’s winners. Perhaps they, and even armchair witnesses to such wonderful human achievements, will be inspired by the words of the Scottish author and poet, Robert Louis Stevenson, who said: “To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end in life”. On the grapevine Aret Kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin on how we won’t need to look abroad this year for great flavours It’s time to celebrate the best of British in all its forms, its dancing dogs, its changeable weather and of course (to get the party underway), its alcohol! Beer, Cider, Spirits and lets not forget wine, you name it we’ve got it, and what choice there is! We’re all aware of our long love affair with home-grown Beer, Ale and Cider, but until a few years ago you’d be hard pressed to find a good, drinkable English wine. It’s becoming very clear however, that ‘times they are a-changin’, and this could be the year to really put English wine on the map! Summer 2012 is set to see an unprecedented increase in demand for English wine as we all delight in our Britishness, and believe me there’s plenty of it out there to be proud of. Regions which produce smaller yields are often higher in price, and although English wines reflect this, it’s worth remembering that in International blind tastings, sparkling English wines have been known to out perform their Champagne

rivals! As it turns out southern England’s semi-continental climate provides near perfect growing conditions for the three main grapes used in champagne – pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier. Most of our vineyards can be found in the south-facing, chalky hills of the South, from Cornwall and Devon in the West Country, across to Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey and Kent in the South-east and up to Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex in East Anglia. The six most celebrated English vineyards are Camel Valley in Cornwall; Three Choirs in Gloucestershire; Nyetimber in West Sussex; Ridgeview in East Sussex; Denbies in Surrey; and Chapel Down in Kent. ‘Worcesterparkians’ in the know, will no doubt be aware of Denbies in Dorking and may have already sampled some of their lovely wines which start at around £7.75. If you haven’t been it’s worth visiting to discover what Surrey has to offer in terms of English wine. Try the Chalk Ridge Rose, the 2010 was awarded

gold at the International Wine Challenge 2011. England was one of 21 countries to submit a wine in the still rosé category for which there were 367 entries. This was the only gold award achieved in the still rosé category and an unprecedented achievement for an English wine! Happily, there are too many excellent wines for me to cover here, but Nyetimber is one that simply cannot not be ignored! Mentioned in the Domesday Book and once home to Anne of Cleves, fourth wife of Henry VIII, this Sussex vineyard is producing some of our oldest sparkling wines, which are arguably up there with the finest sparkling wines in the world. The French were (of course) harder to convince until 1997 when in a blind tasting Nyetimber’s 1992 Blanc de Blancs caused a debate as to which area of France it came from! Admittedly Nyetimber Classic cuvee will set you back £25 or more, but when you consider the historical Kudos (and the ability to pull the wool over the French Oenophiles eyes), it seems a small price to pay! View from the city

by Justin Urquhart Stewart A New Generation of Peers

The sums as yet may seem small when compared to the leviathan banks that we are all so much more familiar with, but there is a vibrant and growing deposit and lending service which I believe has the opportunity of creating a very exciting and timely alternative at this financially sensitive moment. Now reaching a figure of £250 million, this is still relatively minor in its impact - but in an environment of financial constriction, its impact may well be greater than some expect. So far, relatively few have heard of the ‘peer to peer’ facilities that are just starting to burgeon into a more popular domain. The concept is simple, as all the best ideas usually are. It is to use the internet as a matching facility between willing depositors and lenders and willing borrowers. Such an idea is hardly new, as in the past we have seen the growth and application of mutuals and co-operatives as a means of local financing but unlike our continental colleagues, these have never really broken through in any scale and size to the consumer market. I suppose to an extent this is because there was no need for such a system in earlier times, with higher interest

rates, more competition, better returns elsewhere and credit that was as easily available as water. Now we are in a new world, where the ‘new normal’ is a very different beastie, with suppressed interest rates (thanks to Quantitative Easing and money printing), low money supply due to bank risk aversion and capital constraints, together with erratic stock markets that react more to political ineptitudes and indecision than corporate strength, results and profits. Not actually a very pleasant situation, all told. So now we are in a position where smaller companies are desperate for more liquidity, but of course at the right price and margin. However, we are also in the position where we want to encourage more entrepreneurship and dynamism in the economy, and yet this is the very moment when such funds seem to be drying up. If we set up over 400,000 new businesses a year in the UK, then you would think that this should be a key target for the politicians to try and address. Additionally, we should also consider the other side - we all know that it has been the much oppressed depositors that have suffered most under this low interest rate era (especially as there are far more savers than borrowers). Many older folk have seen their income decimated as interest rates have plummeted to levels often such that they are losing real value below the rate of inflation. Thus a mechanism where better deposit rates can be achieved (and at various rates according to the levels of risk that a depositor finds acceptable), has to be a valuable alternative. However, there are of course still some significant risks. Firstly, these operations are as yet unregulated, so the depositor has little recall or rights and is certainly not covered by the £85,000 bank deposit guarantee. This is an area that should be addressed and I see no reason why they should not be brought under the ambit of the regulator; this in turn can only serve to encourage further consumer confidence and consequently greater participation. This to me is an attractive concept, but one that I believe can and should be taken much further. Why could we not have regional and local facilities whereby local depositors and investors could be investing and supporting local businesses directly? In effect, we could be recreating the same facilities as the old regional stock exchanges that formed such a vital financing need for industry years ago. I am sure some will recall that in 1945 we had 45 stock exchanges around the UK. Now whilst we don’t need to recreate such antique structures again, we can redevelop the concept into a modern facility. Around the country I have found quite a number of very vibrant entrepreneurial groups, and growing numbers of business angels. These are often formed by either more sophisticated individuals or previously successful business people, therefore a service which is simple and straightforward and accessible for the smaller investor and depositor could well be a very attractive alternative. A simpler method of funneling investment to where it is needed to stimulate growth has to be beneficial to all and sundry. Given the current situation with the structure of our national finances, I am surprised that the government has not been addressing these initiatives more directly, and acting to encourage further development. This doesn’t need to involve any financing but rather acting to foster the right environment and regulation. In fact, how refreshing it would be if a bank could consider redesigning part of its business model to adopt such a structure. A new ‘3i’ (not the private equity company) in my view is needed - Imagination, Initiative and Invention, where depositors can get a better return and borrowers get more choice - not just nationally but also regionally and locally.

Making the most of a Staycation Although you might imagine that the main reason people stay in the UK for the summer is lack of money, it’s not always the case. Not everyone likes the hassle of travelling, particularly those who are elderly and not up to facing the scrum of airports and ferry terminals. And if you are a parent of young children the journey is enough to put you off going away at all. We do have a beautiful country with some fascinating history and lots going on. But people travel overseas simply because we can’t rely on our weather. Chances are though, if you take a two week break at home either in your own home or in a holiday rental property - there will be some days that are lovely and can be made every bit as enjoyable as being abroad. The trick is

preparing as much as possible beforehand, so when the forecast says the next day will be warm you’ll be ready to leave early and beat the crowds. Firstly you need to think about the ‘equipment’ you’ll need. If you are planning a picnic lunch gather up the essentials and have them packed up ready to go. Picnic blankets are the lightest and smallest to carry but older members of the family might need a fold up chair. Games add to the fun so include a football, a Frisbee or buckets and spades.Younger children can have a small rucksack containing drawing materials. The food of course is a highlight of a day out and unless you are planning a pub lunch you should buy and prepare as much as you can well in advance. Biscuits, crisps and drinks and the obligatory tea bags, sugar, cups and a teaspoon should be packed in readiness. Make sure plastic containers have their lids with them and flasks their stoppers, and you won’t be scrabbling around at the back of the cupboard at the last minute. Other essentials include sun lotion, tissues/kitchen

towel, a rubbish bag and hand wipes – baby wipes make excellent all-purpose cleaning cloths. Some first aid materials won’t go amiss either, particularly plasters and sting relief cream. We all know that the forecast isn’t always right, so put a few jumpers in a bag too. Next, you need to decide where to go. Brainstorm ideas with your family: trips that only take a half day; beach or river destinations for the warmest days; places that have indoor entertainment nearby if the weather turns or you decide to make a longer day. Include locations to go to when you have more of a budget e.g. theme parks, and also those that are free if you are trying to suit everybody without spending a fortune. If you have children, the website www.letsgowiththechildren.co.uk is an excellent source of ideas and www.resort-guide. co.uk is also a good site to visit. When the sun arrives, you’ll be able to quickly select an ideal spot from your list. The night before you go, top up the car with fuel, print out directions or set up the satnav, prepare any fresh food, withdraw some cash and put phones and cameras on charge. Most importantly, agree a leaving time for the next morning with the family. If you say 8 o’clock you have a chance of being on your way by 8:30; if you don’t say a time at all everybody will be working to their own plan and you will have wasted precious sunny hours.

Square Dancing Comes To Worcester Park There are Square Dance clubs throughout England (Scotland and Wales) with at least one, and often a number, of clubs in just about every county including Surrey. Hogsmill Squares is one such local Square Dance Club formed in October 2011 when Granville and Wendy Spencer moved into the area. They had been dancing at numerous clubs north of London but found there were none in this area and so decided to start their own. The club takes its name from the Hogsmill River that rises in Ewell and flows through the local area before reaching the Thames at Kingston. The logo reflects the watermills on the river that in the past manufactured gunpowder, unfortunately they had a habit of blowing themselves up! We have at present nearly 40 members who meet at St. John’s Parish Centre, Stoneleigh on a Tuesday evening which is our main club night. However, we plan to start a NEW BEGINNERS CLASS on a MONDAY evening at 07.30 pm on 10th SEPTEMBER 2012 at St. Mary’s Church Hall, The Avenue, Worcester Park, KT4 Square dancing is suitable for singles and couples and is for all ages. You can spend quality time with your partner or make new friends while learning a new skill and taking gentle exercise. It offers fun and friendship, exercise, co-ordination and dexterity to anyone who would like to have a go. So what is square dancing? It’s a party – Square dancing is party time every time you do it. Square Dancing brings people together for fun and friendship. The fun starts on the very first night. It’s modern – The music used is everything from country and western and all-time standards to modern pop. It keeps you fit – Square Dancing is the perfect exercise. It combines all the positive aspects of physical exercise with none of the negative elements. It is low impact activity requiring constant movement and directional changes that keep the body in shape. It keeps you healthy – As with all regular exercise, square dancing can lead to slower heart rate, lower blood pressure and improved cholesterol profile. The movements of many square dances can strengthen your weight-bearing bones. It is a positive alternative to aerobics or jogging when recovering from illness. Above all it is good fun - we laugh a lot, which is the best medicine of all. It burns off calories – During an hour of dancing you can burn between 400 and 800.

It’s a mental challenge – Reacting quickly to the square dance caller keeps you mentally on your toes. Whilst concentrating on the moves you escape from any worries and pressures. It’s teamwork – Your team of eight dancers depend on each other to keep the dance moving. It’s sociable – Square dancing contains a social component that solitary fitness endeavours do not. It is very tactile and friendly which contributes to self esteem and a positive outlook. If you cannot make the 10th September do not worry as going forward in 2012 we plan to meet every Monday (except the 8th Oct & 5th Nov) and will be happy to accept new students throughout the first month so come along on the 17th or 24th September 2012 and you will be fine. If you are unsure or require further information please do not hesitate to contact Granville and Wendy Spencer on Tel: 02035 567449, Mob: 07752 431721or E-mail: spencer8@ tiscali.co.uk.

Voice for wildlife Worcester Park’s own Carol Williams ponders on the benefits of the recent heavy rainfall Abundance and beauty At the time of writing, my back garden was flooded. The heavy clay soil became so waterlogged in the prolonged June rainfall, that the lawn turned into a temporary lake. By the time you read this, we may be in a different weather system, or have been through many changes and be back in the wet. An abundance of water has brought forth lushness and plenty and beauty in many places, destruction in others. Shadbolt Park pond is doing very well in all the wet we’ve had, though many of the insects prefer the sun for mating and foraging. On sunny days we have been treated to spectacular displays of damsel fly courtship, with both a blue and a crimson species dancing for us. The abundance of is a delight. Continual wet is not good for the pollinating insects, though; many are in serious decline already through loss of wildflowers, hedgerows and wetland areas. Sadly, the tidiness many people seem to favour, and a landscape of concrete, brick and fence really is a desert for wildlife. In fact, we would suffer from less severe flooding

44

if we had more wetland and if there were more trees and hedges to soak up the excess water. Many floods are caused because excess rainfall has nowhere to soak or drain into and so the water simply cascades down across hard surfaces and swells rivers until they burst their banks. Flood plains, water meadows, lakes and ponds are essential for containing this excess, and vegetation stabilises soil, preventing the erosion that increases flood risk. I recently read an interesting article in Resurgence magazine, about Water Retention Landscapes. This innovative technology can revitalise eroded and unproductive land by creating a lake that will capture rainfall and allow the water to gradually and gently permeate the soil. The transformation of a dust bowl into a green oasis, simply by ‘water catchment’ was inspirational to read about; wildlife rapidly moved in and all the land surrounding the new lake began to regenerate from the replenished water table. We don’t use water wisely; we waste it. We could capture so much more of the recent heavy rain into ponds and small lakes in churchyards, parks , schools and gardens, creating rich wildlife habitat and something beautiful to enjoy. Capturing the rain for watering our plants in drier weather would also be a very good idea. I’m amazed at the number of gardeners who don’t do so. Damp weather brings out the slugs and snails, but these

are good food for hedgehogs and toads, which are in decline through habitat loss. Encouraging areas of dense, shrubby vegetation will help. Frogs will also come to gardens and chomp the slugs if there’s a pond and some damp places they can hide. Personally I love rain and enjoy a walk in a light shower. Under trees you often don’t feel the wet at all - the leaf canopy is a good natural umbrella. I love hearing the birds, sheltering in the trees, singing in the rain. A benefit of rain is that cats don’t much like it, so fledgelings are safer from them! Seeing a whole brood of wood warbler nestlings , on BBC Springwatch, killed by a pet cat, was

really terribly sad -our birds have so much to contend with. I would be very happy if pet cats stayed at home and slept, and did not roam about killing the birds. The advice from the Springwatch team was to keep them in at night, which would reduce predation by 50%. When you don’t own a cat yourself, and love encouraging birds to your garden, an intruding cat is never welcome. Time, maybe, for little puss to stay at home with her family and not be free to roam? Doing one thing for wildlife could just be as easy as keeping the cat indoors. And, to end, an abundance of beautiful poetic thought from H.P Lovecraft: “Mid-summer...... when the alchemy of Nature transmutes the sylvan landscape to one vivid and almost homogeneous mass of green; when the senses are well-nigh intoxicated with the surging seas of moist verdure and the subtly indefinable odours of the soil and the vegetation. In such surroundings the mind loses its perspective; time and space become trivial and unreal, and echoes of a forgotten prehistoric past beat insistently upon the enthralled consciousness.”

Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving Vehicle crime - protect yourself There has been an alarming increase in incidents of thefts from motor vehicles in the Worcester Park and Nonsuch areas. The vast majority of these have not required forced entry. By this I mean the vehicles were either left insecure or unlocked (I myself have been guilty of assuming my car would self lock when in fact it doesn’t), or the thieves are finding new and clever ways of effecting entry. Did you know that  Most vehicle crime is preventable. It can take as little as 10 seconds for a thief to steal something from your car. If at all possible, leave nothing on view. - NEVER leave valuable items in your car, including sunglasses, the removable radio cover and your Sat Nav. Do you really need all those things you keep in the glove box? - Wipe away the Sat Nav mark on your windscreen. - Consider fitting anti-tamper screws to your number plate. - Never leave your car keys where they can be seen from the front door. Vehicle common sense Always - Close the windows and sunroof; lock the doors and activate any security devices when leaving your car unattended. - Park with care, particularly at night or if you are leaving the vehicle for a long time. If possible, park in a busy, well-lit area. Never - Leave cash, credit cards, cheque book, mobile phones, vehicle documents or other valuables in the car. - Never leave your keys in the car, even for a second - treat them as you would your cash and credit cards. Be vigilant at all times, and should you become aware of a car crime in progress: DO NOT: Approach or make yourself known to the criminal. DO: Call 999, note the time, and if possible from an invisible vantage point, make a note of descriptions, vehicles (including registration numbers), and even

50

the direction in which the criminal/s make off. The most important thing is to stay safe and do not worry, the probability is that you probably wont be affected by a crime of this type. But we must always be alert and aware. Any information you may be able to give us will be received in the strictest confidence. Please continue to help us make Worcester Park and Nonsuch among the safest wards in London.

Dry weather by Pippa Greenwood

After all those weeks in early summer when it seemed unable to stop raining, many plants will have been lulled into a false sense of security. And those of us who look after the plants are also likely to have become a little too used to not worrying about what and how to water to best effect, and how to minimise the effects of dry weather. So if you’re now finding yourself battling with the effects of a more text-book summer, here are my tips for coping: Mulching really does help to keep the moisture in the soil. It’s important to make sure the soil is really well watered BEFORE you apply the mulch, so water well or wait until after there has been a heavy rainfall. Then around the area, covering the roots of the plant (or preferably a bit further) shovel on well-rotted manure, composted bark or garden compost. Don’t forget that vegetables as well as flowers benefit from mulching. A slow but steady supply of water is generally more use and more appreciated by plants than intermittent heavy drenching. Newly planted trees and shrubs establish better and suffer drought stress less if the soil is never allowed to dry out completely. Installing some perforated or permeable pipe beneath the soil surface or on the surface but beneath the mulch provides just what they need. If you’re making any new plantings for the patio right now, don’t risk them becoming drought stressed before their moment of autumn or winter glory comes. When planting up late season patio pots, decrease the effects of the summer sun by lining the insides of the pot with bubblewrap polythene. When you do need to use extra water on your garden, try to apply it in the evening or otherwise as early as you can in the morning. Less will be lost by evaporation and there will also be less likelihood of plants suffering scorching. However much you’ve taken a fancy to a gorgeous looking plant in your local garden centre, don’t buy it right now. In hot, dry conditions it is much harder for a plant to become established and much more likely that it’ll suffer stress. A bit of temporary shading, perhaps in the form of some shade netting (available from garden centres) or some large, leafy branches driven in to the soil, will help to keep things a little cooler during the hotter weather. It may not look great, but it could save you a packet in replacing plants. Vegetable plants can be covered with netted cloches (like the Giant Easy Net Tunnels available from my website) to achieve the same effect – and these will also help to keep off many potential pests too. Siphoning water out from the bath is a great way to re-use domestic water. The usual tiny quantities of soap or bubble bath used by most of us won’t cause any problems with plants and makes a great drink for trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables. Remember that some plants are more tolerant of dry conditions than others, so next time you do shop for plants, it may be worth bearing this in mind. On the whole, plants with silvery or densely hairy leaves are pretty drought

tolerant, as are those whose names imply that they are of Mediterranean origin. Some of my favourite droughtresisters include: Convolvulus cneorum – stunning silvery leaves and miniature white flowers, often with a touch of pink, which resemble those of morning glories. Rosemary – this shrub has great purple flowers and wonderfully aromatic foliage, perfect for cooking, and when mature many people use the wood to make barbeque skewers which are said to impart a delightful rosemary aroma to the meat. Senecio maritima – a pretty divided leafed plant with dense hair on the leaves making it look silvery. Gazanias – with their large orange, brown and burgundy flowers and silvered leaves, they look a treat in patio pots of summer borders. Lavenders – aromatic leaves and perfumed blue, lilac purple or white flower spikes, this cottage garden favourite is also a magnet for bees. Geraniums and their cousins, Pelargoniums, are both very drought resistant, and come with foliage that is often attractively marked and pretty flowers. Pelargoniums, usually the more flamboyantly coloured of the two, are not hardy but great in summer containers and the herbaceous
