Welcome to

our May edition Dear All, Looking back over the past few issues of Worcester Park Life , I seem to have made a lot of references to the weather. So, this month, I thought I’d try and write my short intro without any reference to the W-word! However, I think this might be harder than I thought, as I was hoping to highlight the start of the Summer Fair season, especially at our local schools. So much time and effort goes into making these events a success (with hours of work put in by armies of volunteers, Parents Associations and teaching staff ) it really is the icing the cake when the sun actually shines (sorry, there I go again). But in truth, what really makes these events go with a bang, is the huge support we see, year on year from the local community. Do check out details of our forthcoming fairs and fun-days inside this issue and make a note on your calendar to pop along if you can. Fun for all the family guaranteed! So, whatever the weather (OK, I give up!) have a great May and please keep me up to date with what you’ve been up to in and around Worcester Park and let us know about any events or activities you’d like to see featured in coming issues of the magazine. Or maybe your club or organisation is looking for new members? Get in touch and we’d be happy to publish an article telling everyone where/when you meet and why people should join you. And if you’re a local business looking for more local customers then give me a call and we can work out an affordable advertising plan that meets your budget. Don’t forget, you can enjoy not one but two Bank Holidays this month, so let’s all look forward to the start of our long awaited summer! Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisher P.S. Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when replying to adverts and get in touch by 17th May if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the June edition.

Why advertise with us? Worcester Park Life is such a great local magazine to advertise my business in. I got so much interest. I started my baby/ toddler music classes in August. Ginger from Music Fun As “the local plumber” I’m pleased to be a part of the New Malden Village Voice and Worcester Park Life communities, living and working with the people in the area. The publications bring me a lot of my local work and Jenny manages my Ad in a very helpful, professional manner. Worcester Park History Around Plough Green This month we take a look at the shops in Malden

Road facing The Plough and the adjacent green, which in 1930s publications were sometimes listed and numbered under the address ‘Plough Green’. By 1938 there were seven shops between Idmiston Road and Columbia Avenue, and another ten between Columbia Avenue and the railway bridge. On the corner of Idmiston Road is the Co-op, which was opened by the Royal Arsenal Co-Operative Society Ltd in the 1930s, and originally had grocery, greengrocery and butcher’s sections. The RACS had been formed (as the Royal Arsenal Supply Association) in Woolwich in 1868, as a co-operative run by workers at the Royal Arsenal. In the following decades it opened branches across south-east London, and in the 20th century it diversified, offering travel, insurance and other services. In the 1960s-70s it took over a number of smaller Co-operative societies in Surrey and Kent, before being amalgamated with the Co-operative Wholesale Society in 1985. In common with other Co-operative societies, RACS offered customers a dividend; an advertisement in the

6

Malden parish magazine in 1940 pointed out that the dividend on RACS milk and bread – from their own dairies and bakeries – was equivalent to free supplies for three weeks a year. The Co-op was badly damaged when a V1 (‘doodlebug’) fell here on the afternoon of 18 June 1944. Several of the other shops in this parade followed the same trades for many years, albeit in some cases with a succession of proprietors. No. 380 was the Post Office and newsagent’s run by Herbert G Moore, by 1938; in February 1940 C W G Hoggins was advertising his new management of “The Modern Library” at this address, offering an agency for inserting advertisements “in any newspaper” as well as the “prompt and careful delivery” of newspapers, and the Post Office. This business was later taken over by Leonard Trimmer. No. 378 was occupied by W V Aldridge, “oil and colour man”, by 1938, and he was succeeded by Short and Bower, who by 1966 had modernised their directory listing to “hardware dealers”. Mary Ralph recalls that, in the 1940s/50s, “One could take an empty container and have this filled with vinegar [or] paraffin.” Next door was the draper’s shop run by Henry Carr under the name “Marion”.

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

To the left, at no. 374, was Alfred G Payne’s greengrocery. As our illustration shows, this was used during the war as a base for National Savings volunteer collectors, hence the Wings for Victory posters. Later in the 1940s it was a pastry-cook’s shop run by Clifford Birdsall (listed at 382 in the 1938 directory). Mary Ralph recalls “To help in the making of Christmas puddings, Mum would ask the assistants to save breadcrumbs for her. Hot Cross Buns were only ever baked for Good Friday and the shop was only open, early, for a couple of hours, so if anyone wanted them, one had to look smartish!” The last shop before Columbia Avenue was a tobacconist’s and sweet shop. This was run by Mrs T K Clarke by 1938, and Joan Babbage (née Gater) recalls buying wine

gums and sherbet dabs there; by 1948 she had been succeeded by Stanley Hunt. The shop on the further corner of Columbia Avenue was for many years a dairy, successively H A Job Ltd and the Express Dairy Co. Robin Glasscock recalls “Before the war the milk float would be horse-drawn,

7

but during the war I helped the milk lady, Margot, on her milk round [on the Malden Green Estate] and it was just a two-handled barrow.” In the yard behind the shop, facing Columbia Avenue, was the cold store (until recently the premises of Proctor Nets Ltd, suppliers of sports and agricultural nets); “you had to load it up from the refrigerated room which you did desperately quickly because it really was cold.” Next door, R C T Whittard had established a high-class grocer’s by 1938: Whittard’s later took over No. 366, next door, as a greengrocer’s, and 358 as a fishmonger’s. Mary Ralph recalls that “the shop would be opened out and the fish placed on a large marble slab, supported by brick tiled posts and sloped gently down towards the pavement.” Do any WPL readers have any memories of Whittards’ three shops? Does anyone remember if there was a Whittard family running them? Among the longer-lasting shops were the Victoria Wine Co. (362), Rendell’s the butcher’s (360) and G A Thomas, hairdresser (356), all of which appear in directories from both 1938 and 1966. Mary Ralph recalls that her mother was registered with Rendell’s during rationing. “Not owning a fridge until at least the mid-1950s, she would visit mid-week and select and pay at the cash desk for the meat allowed for the weekend. Mr Rendell or an assistant would wrap it up and store it, ticketed with Mum’s number, 128, in the

cold store which seemed to take up much of the back of the shop. On Saturday mornings I would be sent to wait in the queue and, when my turn came, say ‘128, please’, and be fetched the meat to bring home.” The next-to-last shop, 354, was in 1938 a pastry-cook’s and tea shop, run by the Misses E and G Pearce under the name “The Rose Bowl”. Joan Babbage recalls that “They used to do eggs from a farm” and “if my Granny ever came we’d always have jam tarts from The Rose Bowl – everything home-made.” A date for your diaries: Saturday 18th May sees the return of the Kingston & Malden Scout & Guide Band to St Mary’s Church, Cuddington (at the top of The Avenue) for an evening of music and entertainment. Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.15pm start. Tickets are available on the door for £5. Another piece of news from St Mary’s: the ‘Buzzword’ service, which is held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month and is especially aimed at families, is moving to a new time, 4pm, and being given a new name, Connect Family Worship, as from 21st April. On the grapevine Aret kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin

Ieach t’s at about this time year that I start

feverishly planning my escape to exciting places, far away food and wine destinations and hotter climes. Longingly, I stare at holiday brochures and develop an unhealthy obsession with A Place in the Sun, Home and Away. I think it’s the uncertainty of the not quite there season, not quite winter (although it’s doing a good impression!) and not quite summer but always, always wet. Unfortunately, reality bites and I am painfully aware that work commitments and life in general will not be conducive to long, leisurely breaks away this year, and so it’s time to plan my staycation and hope upon hope that we are actually blessed with some decent weather. In the lead up to the ‘hotter’ months I always forget how much London and indeed the UK has to offer. If you are inclined to, you can fill your calendar choc full of interesting experiences and outings whether your first love is culture, food and drink, nightlife or music. I’ve only just started to put together my summer wish list of events and already I’m feeling pretty good about the months ahead. There seems to be some really interesting things going on not too far from Worcester Park and one in particular is top of my agenda. May is shaping up to be a great month for events with the Foodies Festival coming to Hampton Court on May 25th, 26th and 27th or if you can’t make those dates pop along to Clapham Common on June 7th, 8th and 9th. I missed this event last year and it had such great reviews that I don’t intend to make the same mistake twice! Full to the brim with star chefs, informative masterclasses and lots of delicious food and drink, this festival is well worth a visit. If you are a budding photographer who loves their culinary pleasures and the organisers like the look of your previous work, you could even bag yourself a free 3 day pass and exclusive backstage access. All children under 12 go free and Tickets are a bargain at £15 for a 1 day adult pass, £25 for three days or go all out and treat yourself to a VIP ticket with a glass of Champagne on arrival, VIP access, reserved seating for masterclasses and a taster meal, all for £48. If you feel brave enough to take on the London crowds in the summer then you’ll have plenty to

10

choose from, don’t miss the Chelsea flower show (for the more cultured and sensitive souls), the Itunes Festival (if you’re young and hip and actually know who Tinie Tempah and One Direction are!) or if like me you enjoy really good food and drink, head to Taste London in Regents Park from the 20th to the 23rd of June 2013. The choice is yours. Now lets just pray for a summer! WPLife

Bring in the May By Kate McLelland O ne of the best indications that summer is about to arrive is when Britain’s hedgerows explode with the

pink and white blossoms of the hawthorn. The hawthorn is one of those quintessentially English trees: although quietly unobtrusive for most of the year, it bursts into spectacular life in the late spring, with flowers crowded so densely together they look like snowfall. In the autumn it glows with clusters of red berries.voursome Italian diced pancetta instead. No wonder the tree features so strongly in ancient folklore. The old name for hawthorn was “may” and the flower of the may tree has long been considered a symbol of hope. It even gave its name to The Mayflower, the famous ship that sailed from England in 1620, transporting a stalwart band of pilgrims to build a new life in America. As its alternative name suggests, hawthorn was central to ancient May Day celebrations. The old Celtic festival of May Day was known as ‘Beltane’ after the Celtic god of light, or the sun. The beginning of summer was also celebrated in Ancient Rome at the Floralia festival (dedicated to the flower goddess Flora), which took place at roughly the same time. May Day celebrations in Britain were probably a hybrid of both traditions mixed up with Druidic tree worship, and the introduction of Christianity did little to dispel these pagan traditions. On the first day of May, villagers would wake at daybreak and roam through the countryside, gathering flowers and hawthorn twigs to decorate their houses. A maypole – usually the trunk of a birch tree, stripped of its branches and decorated with ribbons and flowers - was set up in the middle of the village green. In olden times maypoles were constructed with three rings on the top - the highest and smallest was made of hawthorn. The community danced around the pole, singing traditional songs, while the men of the village performed Morris dances and the prettiest girl, dressed in floral garlands, was crowned Queen of the May. Occasionally a May King was also chosen, and the pair ruled over the festivities. In Elizabethan times, the king and queen were given the names ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Maid Marian’. These celebrations were derived from ancient fertility rituals and the ‘greenwood marriages’ that took place provide clear evidence of this. Often young girls came home from their country rambles with more than a garland of flowers. As one observer wrote: “I have hearde of tenne maidens whiche went to set May, and nine of them came home with childe.” May Day festivities reached their height in England during the Middle Ages but in 1644 the Puritans passed a law which made them illegal. This attempt to repress the celebrations eventually failed, mainly because they were

12

too deeply rooted in rural culture. When the monarchy was restored some years later and Charles II came to the throne, people all over the country put up maypoles as a sign of loyalty to the crown. For the next two hundred years the old customs continued, but interest in May Day traditions began to fade. They enjoyed a brief revival in the Victorian era but any connection to fertility rites was deliberately overlooked and maypole dancing was reduced to an innocent children’s game. Sadly by this time the hawthorn – once the embodiment of hope for the coming summer – had also lost its significance, becoming just another tree in the British landscape. WPLife

Ruth Jemmett Writes The darling buds of May M ay - the fifth month of the year -probably takes its

name from Maia, the Roman goddess of growth, and hopefully that goddess will do her magic stuff on all things green to ensure that one of the longest winters on record is well and truly behind us! William Shakespeare told us that “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May”. He knew - as we do - that although this month heralds our first taste of warm weather, we cannot be too complacent about the unpredictability of its moods. Most of us are also familiar with the proverb “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out”. (You pedants might like to know that ’clout’ is an old English word meaning ’clothing’). In other words, get the bikini out of the drawer, but have some winter woollies handy just in case Spring has a sting in its tail! Perhaps we would be wise to pay heed to such words, as another old proverb warns us that “He who bathes in May will soon be laid in clay”. If the person who coined that expression took their own advice seriously, their personal hygiene didn’t seem to be up to much! His cleanliness habits sounded as dodgy as those of Queen Elizabeth The First, who purportedly bathed once a year “whether she needed it or no”.!!! On the plus side, ancient tradition also tells us that the women who wash their faces in dew on May 1st will be “restored to beauty”, so if you see me skulking around Auriol Park here in Worcester Park, early on that morning, you will know what I am up to! Judging from what I see in the mirror these days when I’m not wearing make-up, I think I might have to slap on the dew from the entire football pitch at the aforesaid park. Desperate times need desperate measures! Many of us associate this month with the crowning of May Queens, when the prettiest girl in a village is feted by the locals. Such a ‘queen’ is thought by some to be a representation of the Roman goddess Flora, who was worshipped in the five-day festival of Floralia that took place at about this time of the year in ancient Rome. This month also reminds us of maypoles. My late mother once told me that when she was a small girl she and her classmates practised assiduously for a demonstration of maypole dancing for a fete at her school. On the big day the children got a little confused, and apparently the resulting tangle represented a rather large piece of macramé! We avid gardeners in this vicinity approach this month in a positive mood, as not only are our gardens beginning

14

to bloom, but we also look forward to the arrival of the annual Chelsea Flower Show. In May1862 London’s Royal Horticultural Society held its first Great Spring Show. Initially it was held in Kensington, but subsequently its popularity meant that its venue soon proved to be too small. For five glorious days each May, ‘Chelsea’ as it is affectionately known, exhibits a variety of exotic plants and some very exotic people (!) - from places all over the world. It has become part of The Season for the privileged few. Its annual display has only been cancelled for very good reasons - namely two world wars. As time has moved on its popularity has exceeded all expectations. At one point the heaving crowds that thronged the gardens threatened public safety, and now only 150,000 ticket buyers are allowed through the gates of The Royal Hospital, with other associated venues welcoming the overflow of visitors. Happily for those who are unable to attend this special horticultural event, the B.B.C. gives us excellent television programmes about it, and we have national treasure Alan Titchmarsh’s coverage making us feel that summer has truly arrived. Like the first cuckoo in Spring, the smell of smoke from

a barbecue surely tells us that Summer is truly with us. As soon as we get a whiff of that unique combination of burning animal flesh and suburban husband’s singeing moustache drifting up our nostrils, we can be sure that now is the time to socialise with a sausage on a stick. Such functions are what you might call a Marmite Moment. You either love them or hate them. If you play your cards right you can get so sloshed on the Pea Pod Wine made by the local oddball, that you can happily forget all thoughts of salmonella poisoning as you collapse into the petunias singing “Friends And Neighbours”, happy in the knowledge that such an event only rears its head a couple of times a year. If the weather really starts to behave itself I usually think about getting the croquet set out. I then have my yearly ritual of Forgetting The Rules Of Croquet. (As I sometimes forget my own name these days, I suppose it’s a small memory lapse in the greater scheme of things ….). Caught up in the excitement of the thought of sunny days to come I proceed to my wardrobe, and then usually discover that either the cute cotton numbers I wore last year are now completely out of fashion, or that they refuse to encompass my derriere. (The way clothes shrink as you get older is appalling). This is the time of year when we ferret through our sheds to see if the garden furniture will be sturdy enough to survive another summer of crazy English weather. This is also the moment when my husband, after much pleading

on my part, performs HIS annual old English ritual of Seeing If The Lawnmower Works. This almost religious tradition includes much exhortation on his part to the Great God Engine. It includes much huffing and puffing from him, plus the use of many unholy expletives which, I remind him, St Alan Titchmarsh would certainly NEVER use. At that point he seems to get a nasty gleam in his eye and toys with a croquet mallet in a menacing way. I then usually suddenly see something interesting to do in the summerhouse …. Eventually our lawn displays professional-looking green stripes that would shame The All England Club at Wimbledon, and as my husband proudly views the fruits of his labour, I wonder if such an impressive sight is worth all the nagging it took from me to get it done. It is at precisely at that moment each year that the prospect of covering the lawn (or even the husband) with concrete slabs, seems an extremely attractive alternative …… After last year’s soggy summer weather that had people building arks everywhere, we just might have a summer to remember. So get out those skimpy clothes with hope in your heart and a barbecued sausage in your hand. If luck is on our side the sun will come out, and we will forget The Recession as we view the darling buds of May. Now I wonder if I can buy concrete slabs on the internet ……? Seasonal recipe

Cheese, Bacon & Onion Pie Perfect for a simple lunch or for an early

summer picnic this savoury pie has a really rich and buttery crisp pastry and a tasty smoked bacon and onion filling. It tastes just as delicious warm or cold. cling film. Chill for 20-25 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Dry-fry the bacon pieces in a large non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until just golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the oil and sliced onions to the pan and fry gently, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until the onions are very tender and pale golden. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Roll out just over half the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20x30cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Layer the bacon, onions and grated cheese in the pastry case and season between the layers with freshly ground black pepper. Roll out the rest of the pastry and use to cover the filling. Seal the edges of the pastry with water then pinch them tightly together with fingertips. Trim off any excess pastry. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and pierce 3-4 holes in the top of the pie to allow the steam to escape. Bake on the hot baking sheet for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with tomato salad, if liked. WPLife

calls me Archie. Last month, something very exciting happened to me, I had my first haircut! I was a bit nervous but my “mum” had read an article about what to look for in a good groomer so she felt confident taking me to Picture Pawfect in Worcester Park , where I was born! There had been some scary stories in the press about dogs being taken to groomers who hadn’t really looked after them, resulting in some dogs getting hurt or even killed. Anybody can call themselves a groomer, even if they aren’t qualified, as groomers aren’t regulated yet, so my owner had found out what signs to look out for , hear are some pointers – • Ask to see the groomer’s qualifications. • Look at the salon before you book an appointment. Is it reasonably clean? Has equipment been cleaned? • Does the salon use cage dryers? Some dogs have been

• New technology isn’t always a good thing. There are now salons with “Doggie washing machines”. Please do not encourage these as they can be very traumatic for your dog. • Are there lots of dogs being groomed at the same time? If there are, are there enough groomers to keep a close eye on each dog? If it appears to be a conveyor belt for grooming, or they show little interest in your dog, then they are probably more interested in your money than the wellbeing of your pet. • Do they ask the right questions when you initially take your dog in. They should ask you about any existing medical conditions or injuries. They should also ask you if your pet has any allergies, the age of your dog and if he or she is up to date with vaccinations etc. I have a very fluffy coat so whenever we go for walks I do get very dirty and pick up all sorts of leaves and twigs so I was looking forward to looking a bit neater! When I first met Nicola at Picture Pawfect, she was very kind. She told us that my first cut would take at least 2

hours ,as she would spend a lot of time just playing with me at first, so I didn’t feel scared when she tried to use the clippers or hairdryer on me. I liked the sound of that! Nicola had a hydro-bath where I had a lovely wash, then I had my hair and nails done and when she used the drier (which I am normally scared of) I didn’t mind because she stroked me all the time. When my family came to collect me, they couldn’t believe it was me! The cut had revealed I had freckles, so now I look a bit like a Dalmatian! I smelt lovely too. I was even excited to hop back onto the table for my “after” photo with Nicola. All in all, I had a great first experience at the groomers and my mum is so pleased I am easy to clean up after my walks! I can recommend Picture Pawfect to any of my doggie friends and I’m looking forward to going back for a pamper again. WPLife

The Better Life Eggs-it Strategy

A pair of hybrid chickens, Sweet Pea (Rhode Island / Maran) and Pepperami (Rhode Island / Plymouth

Rock), hardly qualifies as a flock. Even so, two eggs a day, almost every day, soon leads to an eggcess. And, while neighbours sometimes buy a box of four, and other times we swap them or give them away (eggs, not neighbours), our ethos is to try and make use of whatever we have. Unfortunately, unlike Anne, I have always been a fussy eater (the sort of child who made mealtimes an endurance test for everyone). I’ll gladly eat an egg boiled, fried (preferably hard, not runny) or poached (preferably in a tent in Norfolk). Omelettes, though, leave me cold, as do soufflés. While just the thought of an egg custard makes me want to gag - well done, school dinners, circa 1978. Clearly, a little inventiveness* was called for. Many homemade cakes are suitable for freezing, and who isn’t partial to a piece of farmhouse or carrot cake. And it’s a great way to use up surplus carrots. Mayonnaise proved to be so easy that even I could

do it, with just egg yolk, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and water. Take a tip from me though - make sure it is salt and not white pepper. Anyhow, once I had mayonnaise under my belt, literally, somehow, my ambitions grew. Remember when egg shampoo was all the rage? Well, no need to shell out when you’ve eggs to spare - just add olive oil and water (note to self: find way to grow own olives). You too can have that silky sheen in no time - it helps if you still have plenty of hair. Do note that rinsing with water that’s too hot will cook the egg and render you fascinating to passing horses. When we ran out of mundane career choices for an egg, Anne brought out the big guns - in the form of a battered Home Management guide she’d rescued from a car boot sale. Egg whites will bring a shine back to leather and, apparently, stiffened egg whites can tackle greasy marks on leather furniture. Not that we have any to practice on. Anne was all for trying an eggy face pack - on me. I wasn’t too sure how well that would work with a beard though. Eggshells are very useful in the garden, as a good source of calcium. They can either be ground up and put in the chickens’ grit, or added to the compost bin for the soil. I’m also reliably informed that eggshells are a great defence against slugs and snails, but our molluscs must have developed superpowers. I tried valiantly to muster support for a village eggrolling event, but it proved only marginally less popular than my unseasonal painted egg hunt. In the end, I painted a few faces on the shells and stuck them on the garden fence, as an anti-killjoy device. The jackdaws didn’t quite know what to make of them, but the killjoys were kept at bay. Next time we have a surplus, Anne wants to try making scotch eggs. * No egg was wasted in the making of this article. By Derek Thompson

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

Learning to

treasure our successful industries has never been a great trait in the United Kingdom. We tend to take such winners for granted and only praise their value after their demise. The many famous UK car marques have either died or been sold abroad. But this is not to say that our car industry is not successful. In fact we now export more car value than ever before, but sadly run by owners from elsewhere around the globe and not here.

where we are recognised as a global leader. Although the sport has a high profile, the engineers and their businesses seem to get little recognition, and one of their frustrations, especially amongst the component suppliers, has been the lack of available engineers with the requisite skills. Why do we insist in characterising engineers still as car mechanics with an oily rag and a spanner, as opposed to the Germans who have far higher respect for their Herr Doctor Engineers? Another such winner for us is the production of Whisky. This industry has been through torrid times but now, with great marketing, is certainly booming globally - especially in the Far East - although suffering somewhat closer to home. Sales in China rose some 8% last year. The total export sales have jumped 87% over the past decade and now account for 80% of Scotland’s food and drink exports by value – which, by the way, accounts for 25% of the total UK food and drink export figure. In terms of market by volume, I was surprised to find that France in fact was the largest market which,

although falling by nearly 25% last year, still accounts for just under 154 million bottles. New business : new style stock markets I was delighted to hear of another success story, or at least the beginning of one. I met with Barry Laden, a delightful entrepreneur who has established a clothing business from scratch right here in the UK, in the East End of London. Unsurprisingly it is called the East End Manufacturing company. Evaluating that with great local skills, good branding (yes the UK brand still carries a lot of weight) and the change in the cost of production and freight from China, London can now be competitive again. Now add to this that he has been able to go to the new “stock markets” of this generation, the peer to peer or crowd funding structures, to raise his capital, and he is off, up and running. In fact he was able to raise all he needed within a short period, cost effectively and with the investors he wants to have. Politicians please take note. Here is innovation working. So whilst the older banks are creaking to repair their balance sheets, others are sowing seeds for the next generation. Good luck Barry to you, your company and your investors.

Shafts of Light? The good news is that someone thinks it’s getting better. Last week the OECD announced that the UK is “on track to recover to its long term growth rate” later this year. Sadly of course this rate is only 2%, but from where we are now that has to be encouraging. They pointed to their more reliable longer term composite leading indicators which seem to have a good track record in identifying changes in economic moves six months further ahead. Taking this further they even pointed to a more encouraging growth picture within the Eurozone. They indicated the US as having the strongest recovery in the developed nations, but that the Eurozone would remain below par albeit with signs of growth picking up later in the year. Let me temper this though with the figures from the WTO, which reduced its global growth forecast for trade from 4.5% to 3.3%. The historical longer term trend line for trade is around 5.3%, and fears of greater protectionism especially amongst some of the developing nations certainly seems to be having an effect. I have also come across some data from the German Finance Ministry which show the progress that is being made. Sadly of course, being positive, it gets very little coverage here in the UK. It would seem that Ireland, Spain and Italy will all have improving current account balances this year even venturing back into the black. This is a significant change. Also I note the improvement in the unit labour cost figures that are showing a steady improvement for many of the weaker Eurozone nations and which, if taken from Contractor the year 2000, would Electrical now show Greek unit labour Commercial, Industrial costs lower than that Domestic, of Germany! Quite what they are producing may be another issue, but the bitter pill they swallowed may just be finally showing some Inspection, Testing & Andrew Cressey positive results. WPLife

Garden Hide and Seek by Pippa Greenwood H owever much effort you make with your garden, you can be sure that there will still be a few things that look awful. You may have made (or hope to make) beautiful borders, sensational shrubbery and lots more besides, but how do you cope with those things you just cannot seem to hide? A washing line may be essential but rarely adds to the appeal of the garden. If yours consists of two large poles with a line in between, try growing a pretty climber up the poles. If you use a selfclinging plant such as variegated ivy it won’t need any additional support. Alternatively make a chicken wire, trellis ‘box’ or frame around the posts and then allow the climber to scramble up, using plant ties if necessary. Summer flowering clematis or sweet pea will look great too. If you do use a more vigorous climber then be prepared to do some intermittent pruning. Decrepit sheds or moth-eaten garages can be a real eyesore. Sometimes a thorough scrub of the walls will do the trick, or why not make a feature out of the shed or garage and re-paint it. Consider erecting a trellis on one or more of the vertical surfaces and grow a selection of favourite climbers up it to make an even more attractive feature. If the garden can be a little gloomy then it helps if you paint any surfaces such as garage or shed walls with a paler colour. If your heating is fuelled by gas from an unattractive and enormous cylinder or oil from a large green tank, you will know that they have to be sited in an accessible position. You can use hazel wattle hurdles to hide them which are perfect as they also match with the adjacent boundary fence. Try using standard fence panels in the same way and again planting them with climbers or scramblers will help. Whatever you do, make sure that you check on it from time to time and remove excessive climber growth so that the tank remains accessible. Is it the neighbouring garden that harbours the eye sore which makes you want to retreat back into your house? Something nasty next door is of course even harder to conceal but why not add a layer of trellis to the top of your existing fence and then use climbers once it is in position. Hold the trellis in position using batons of wood attached to the existing fence posts or special post-joining metal sleeves that you can buy from your fencing supplier Expert or garden centre. local careTrellis is

available in a range of shapes and need not be straight edged so you can create a range of different looks to suit your gardening style. Another option is to erect a pergola or arch to obscure or break up an unsightly view or the eyesore in the neighbour’s garden and adding plants will help to add a bit more height and soften the outline. If you combine some of your favourite flowering climbers with some evergreen planting too, you should even achieve good effects during the seasons when the leaves have fallen from many plants. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for Pippa’s free newsletter packed full of gardening hints, happenings, advice and offers and you will also receive a free ebook on organic gardening. Don’t forget that you can buy Nemaslug and other biological controls, anti-slug matting and tape, Enviromesh and signed books, autumn vegetable packs and a hand-picked selection of garden products from the website too. Events

The Suffragettes Throughout the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century, successive male governments chose to repress women’s claim to human rights. Most men interpreted ‘the woman question’ in the light of their own prejudiced period. In 1903, despairing of the political stalemate on women’s rights, Emmeline Pankhurst formed the militant Women’s Social and Political Union. Deputations of voteless women who tried to communicate with the Prime Minister on the issue were convicted of ‘obstructing the police’ and jailed as common criminals. In 1909 imprisoned Surrey artist Marion Wallace Dunlop went on hunger-strike for political prisoner status. In order to avoid the responsibility of having suffragettes die in prison, the government introduced the torture of forcible feeding. Men like Frederick Pethick-Lawrence (1871-1961) of Dorking supported the women in their struggle. As a result he was imprisoned and brutally force-fed like the women, then declared bankrupt.

Meet the most militant suffragette in Britain at the Emily Wilding Davison centenary exhibition – Dying for the Vote Bourne Hall Museum, Spring Street, Ewell, KT17 1UF She died for women One hundred years ago in June 1913, amid the carnival spirit of Derby Day and in the presence of King George V and Queen Mary, a militant suffragette named Emily Wilding Davison sacrificed her life for the cause of women’s human rights. The coroner recorded Misadventure but was it an intentional sacrifice? Weigh the evidence for yourself at the exhibition – Dying for the Vote. Emily’s urgent message to the King Emily was fatally injured during the running of the Derby in an attempt to send a message to King George V that his female subjects were being repressed past endurance by government. Her intention was to run on the track and wave the flag of the militant Women’s Social and Political Union in front of newsreel cameras. Tragically, Emily collided with the king’s horse, Anmer.

A Call to the Nation But the women’s cause was still ignored. Women like Emily Davison tried acts of violence as a wake-up call to the nation. Emily set fire to a pillar-box, gave herself up to police, and was sentenced to six months in Holloway Prison where she went on hunger-strike and was force fed. Emily Davison came from a large and resourceful family that originated in Northumberland. She had been

awarded a first class honours pass from Oxford University. This was at a time when women were denied degrees at universities, limiting employment prospects. Emily persevered to obtain a degree from London University, the first to award degrees to women. In company with many others who joined the Women’s Social and Political Union, Emily Davison saw the right to vote in Parliamentary elections not as an end in itself, but as a gateway through which women could influence the fair funding of facilities such as maternity and child care, or help for widows. Equal opportunity in the workplace was high on the agenda, as was gender-based legal and moral reform. In 1913, WSPU leader Emmeline Pankhurst, in her fifties, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Since she was pledged to hunger-strike, there seemed no end in view but her early death. This lent urgency to Emily Davison’s message to the King at the one place and time when he was accessible to the public – at the Derby. Tragedy strikes On Derby Day, 4th June 1913, Emily Davison was forty and athletic although worn down by forcible feeding. She

was a keen cyclist and early in her career had turned down an opportunity to swim professionally. She may have felt confident she could dart across the path of oncoming horses to the other side of the racetrack safely. If so, she tragically misjudged. Flying hooves struck her head. Emily died four days later, without regaining consciousness, in Epsom Cottage Hospital. Although the WSPU accorded Emily a martyr’s funeral, her death accomplished little politically. It took the First World War, in which women proved their loyalty alongside their men, to set in motion true democracy. Voting rights for British women on the same terms as men were granted finally in 1928. From 7th May to 27 July this year, Epsom & Ewell commemorates the death of Emily Davison (1872-1913), and the cause for which she died, with a pivotal exhibition guest curator Irene Cockroft at the Borough Museum at Bourne Hall Community Centre, Spring Street, Ewell, Surrey KT17 1UF. Please visit between 9am and 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Free entry to exhibition; parking available; easy access by bus or train (Ewell West Station); telephone 020 8394 1734; www.epsom-ewell.gov.uk.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

Eon.achTheremonth I wonder which wildlife issue to focus seem to be so many, and all of them about conserving and protecting what is left to us, ending the destruction of wilderness and putting a stop to the damage that human activities are doing to the wider environment. Last month I mentioned the frogspawn in Shadbolt Park pond, laid in a mild spell, and then subjected to another bout of severe cold. SInce then, even more has appeared, and there is masses of it at one end. It needs some sunshine and higher temperatures now, to encourage the development of the tadpoles. And those few of us who work each week on the site, need some more clement weather so that we can get on with much needed maintenance work on the notice board! Today (April 12th) I saw my first bumble bee of 2013, out among the grass verges. The absence of bees is very troubling. The Summers of my youth were alive

with their gentle hum, and even up until the mid 1990s; then they began to disappear. The cause of their disastrous decline in recent years has now been ascertained - certain types of pesticide used in agriculture. Modern farming practices have spelled doom for so much of our wildlife. Please join the campaign to get these pesticides banned, and buy organic produce. The birds in my garden started to look for nest material during a brief break in the cold in March, but have stopped again now. Birds cannot raise young without insect food, and there are few insects about just now. You may help by putting out mealworms. Gazing into a pond always takes my mind to wetland wildlife all over the world. So much of it is struggling, as we dam rivers for electricity and drain watermeadows and fill in the ponds. In the UK, the

water vole has disappeared from 94% of its former range. It is now our fastest declining mammal species. This is due to a number of causes, from intensive agriculture to predation by escaped American mink. Preferred habitat is well vegetated banks on slow flowing rivers and streams, where they eat grass, reeds, many wild plants and some invertebrates. The presence of otters on a river system may benefit them, so the return of otters to Surrey is good news on so many fronts. Efforts to breed water voles in captivity, for release into sites created to suit them are now being undertaken; they are a priority species in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan -they are in very real danger of extinction. Captive water voles may be seen at the British Wildlife Centre at Newchapel, nr Lingford in Surrey (tel 01342 834658). And, thinking of water, rainforests come to mind. And Orang Utans whose habitat in Borneo and Sumatra is being devastated by oil palm plantations. There is palm oil in so many of our products, and no clue about where it is sourced. So the simple purchase of peanut butter could be jeopardising the future of Indonesian rainforests and all their wonderful wildlife. Palm oil is often ‘hidden’ in the phrase ‘vegetable oil’, which is a common ingredient of crisps and so much else. I can only suggest that we try to avoid buying anything containing palm oil and challenge the manufacturers to disclose their suppliers, and do something positive like adopting an orphaned orang utan in a rescue centre, in hope that there will still be forest left for his or her release one day. The marine environment also is in great peril from over fishing and pollution. From wildlife such as turtles dying from ingested plastic to oceans stripped of all life (‘trash fish’) for farmed prawns -the grim list of our destructiveness seems to grow longer every hour. Sometimes it is tempting to wring our hands in despair and ask ‘what can we do? it is all so daunting’. But I do have hope, and getting stuck into positive actions to help change things is one way I cope with all the negatives. I’ve recently learned that animal agriculture is one of the largest contributors to climate change - as damaging as transport, and I know we are unsustainably exploiting the seas, so my latest ‘weapon’ in the armoury of protest at all this, is to go vegan - to opt out of the systems that cause so much of the damage. Together we can save wildlife and heal the environment, so please join in, in whatever way, large or small, you can. Thankyou. WPLife

Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan “Gentlemen. No Swearing Please!” Brian Clough Once upon a time in the West A recent trip up North-West, you can’t hear the shortened vowels in print, led me to hanker after a trip to see the football team I watched with my Dad as a lad. In my head the trip the stadium used to go something like this ..... ..... Once upon a time in a land far, far away, a small boy was taken to distant place. A place of giants and legends, a place that had been denied him until now. His head ached as every stimulus hit the spot, snapped the synapses (or what every it is they are supposed do), and ensured that the scenes could be recalled years later: the drive to the ground with his nose pressed up against the window trying to count the millions of supporters streaming to the ground; the squeeze of his father’s hand as he is carefully steered through rainforest of legs and blue and white scarves (no replica kit in those days); the exotic call of the programme seller; the way the ticket felt in his hand and the way it smelled when he brought it up to his nose the excitement, rising so fast in his chest and throat that he could hardly breath, as the climbed the steps and caught a first glimpse of the pitch. The pitch! How could anything be so green, so smooth? The way the lights lit the scene, each player with a star of shadows as sharp as the creases his mother ironed, but yet didn’t blind him. The players were surely giants, so tall, strong and fast! Surely, nothing could be better? Glory? Glory? It took several years before youth enthusiasm was replaced with the realisation that supporting a small Fourth Division (in old money) team led to more days of disappointment then days of glory. Given that where we lived the trip could have been to Liverpool, Everton, possibly Manchester United or City. Instead, Dad and I went to The Stadium, Sealand Road, Chester. (Try explaining to folks in West London what CFC really stands for!) Phoenix These days Chester are trying to do the equivalent of AFC Wimbledon, rising from the ashes left by a clueless owner, and an Easter holiday in North Wales left me with a rare chance to see how they were doing. I failed to convince the daughters to join me – they have as much enthusiasm for the delights of football in general, and the Blue Square Conference North in particular, as I have in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So, I was delighted that my Premier League supporting nephew said he would come. Here was the chance to share those sights and sounds of real football. Gentlemen While everything seems much smaller these days and

58

despite the low expectations caused by all those years of hurt, the old familiar excitement still grew as we walked closer and closer to the ground. Given my nephew’s age, 10, I opted to go in through the Family Enclosure. The game was great, the hotdogs edible! Sadly, my enjoyment was tempered by the swearing going on around us. I’m not naive enough to realise that football fans cheer politely but I thought that in that part of the ground we’d have been spared the worst. Sadly, football still seems to induce a kind of madness that lets, seeming respectable, people to use language that they wouldn’t use elsewhere, particularly when children are around. Thankfully the nephew looked at me and shrugged as if to say “Adults what are they like?” He had a great time, took lots of photos but when asked about the match said, “There was lots of swearing. Oh and we won.” WPLife

Bank Courier Scam People are still falling for this scam - even those who have been warned. Whilst the vulnerable are targeted, even bright intelligent people have been conned. Please remind everyone you can about this scam. People are being telephoned out of the blue and tricked out of their PIN and bank card. The fraud starts with a phone call to the victim from a bank, police or Serious Fraud Office. The tricksters explain there is a problem with their bank account and the account has been compromised. To help persuade victims that the call is genuine, they may ask the victims to hang up and call the relevant authority - the bank, police or Serious Fraud Office - on a genuine number. But unknown to the victim, the caller keeps the line open, so when the victim calls, it’s the fraudster who receives the call. The tricksters convince victims to reveal their PIN usually by asking them to type it into the telephone keypad. They also say that their bank card must be collected. The tricksters arrange for a courier, such as a cab, to pick up the bank card, which is delivered to the trickster so it can be used to withdraw cash from the victim’s bank account. NEVER GIVE anyone your PIN number Your bank or the police will NEVER ask for it NEVER GIVE anyone your CARD (even cut up) Your bank or the police will NEVER ask for it If someone rings up and asks for it, even to verify identity - It’s A Scam. Fraudsters want your PIN number and bank card 1 A fraudster telephones you claiming to be from your bank or the police. They tell you that your bank card details have been used fraudulently. 2 They suggest that you hang up and ring the bank/police back to ensure the call is genuine. Don’t be fooled − they stay on the line. They then tell you to read out or key in your PIN. 3 They send a taxi/courier to you to collect your bank card. With this and your PIN, they take your money. If you are contacted by someone who asks for these, hang up When you hang up, use a different line to report

60

it to police on 101 or allow at least five minutes for the line to automatically clear Call 999 if the crime is happening. Police have identified that organised criminal groups are behind the fraud but despite arresting many of these, courier fraud is continuing as new organised crime groups take over and convince victims that they are genuine. Across London the scam has claimed 2,229 victims between the start of 2011 and the end of 2012. The average age of a victim is 70, most of them have been women, and the average loss has been £4,000 Since January 2011, police have arrested 130 courier fraudsters and charged 93 of them, including two brothers who have been jailed for more than 10 years for taking almost £150,000 from over 200 victims.
