Welcome to November’s Worcester Park Life

from editor
info@wplife.co.uk
Now I’m usually one of the first to scoff about how early Christmas starts these days in some shops/TV and generally go along with the view that anything pre-December is a little out of place, however you’ll notice the ‘C’ (Christmas!) word gets a more than generous appearance in this edition. It is in November after all that most of the schools have their shopping evenings, and when Father Christmas himself turns up in High Streets and Shopping Centres to switch on Christmas lights displays. Last night (Oct 20th) however was a little surreal for me as I was lucky enough to be a small part of the audience to watch International superstar Michael Buble record his Christmas special – complete with fake snow, trees, Christmas songs and line of choirboys dressed like Val Doonican. Pure magic! We can’t promise such celebrity at the Worcester Park Traders Association Late Christmas Night on November 25th hope to see lots of you turn out for this terrific event from 6pm on November 25th. November of course also marks Remembrance as you’ll see from this month’s front cover. You can find out more about local acts of Remembrance on page 17. So there’s lots going on locally this month. See you there? Best wishes Jenny Stuart Editor and publisher

Worcester Park Life
history
This month we take a look at Royal Avenue: as this was the location of the family home of Worcester Park’s only recipient of the VC, this seems appropriate as we approach the Remembrance season.
From Royal Avenue to the trenches by David Rymill
The word ‘avenue’ was popular in the 1930s as a name for suburban roads, but here there really was an ancient avenue of trees, said to have formed part of a royal route from Hampton Court to Nonsuch. By 1866 three houses stood on the western side of Royal Avenue. A fourth, Drumaline, built around 1926 and demolished around 1973, stood near where Drumaline Ridge leads off; it was built for Sir Frederick George Dumayne, a former colonial official in Bombay and Calcutta. Possibly he chose this Scottishsounding name for the house in commemoration of his wife, Mary MacAdam, who lived near Drymen above Loch Lomond, and who died less than a year after their marriage in 1896. There is a Drumline Farm about ten miles away, and I wonder if the place had some significance for them. Next to the right was Tunstall House, known as the Worcester Park Nursing Home by 1930. Daphne
Court stands on the site of the house, and Drumaline Ridge extends across its grounds. The third house was Manor Lodge, home of the Wearne family. Mr and Mrs Wearne had four sons of whom two died in the First World War, within six weeks of each other. The eldest, Keith Morris Wearne, joined the Essex Regiment in India in 1911; Captain Wearne was severely wounded at Gallipoli, but was sent to another front where he was killed on 21 May 1917. His brother, Frank Bernard Wearne, went up to Oxford, from Bromsgrove School, in 1913. The next summer, when war broke out, he immediately volunteered, and joined his brother’s regiment. He was badly wounded at the Battle of the Somme in July 1916; only in the following May was he fit to return to the Front. u

From Royal Avenue to the trenches by David Rymill
Lt Wearne was attached to the 11th Battalion of the Essex Regiment in Northern France; his battalion was alternately manning trenches near Loos, and recuperating at a small village. On the 12th June he wrote to a young cousin, “…there is a tremendous lot of shelling. We don’t mind that much when we are in deep dug-outs, but when we are walking about in the trenches... you should see me bob down like a rabbit when I hear anything coming.” Eight days later the battalion returned to the line, under orders to carry out a trench raid on the 28th June. A force of around 100 was to capture a section of the German front line, take prisoners, and destroy dug-outs. Lt Wearne commanded one of four parties, comprising 20 men, with the task of attacking on the left and preventing German reinforcements reaching the other parties. Soon after 7.10 pm Party B advanced and took part of the enemy’s line. The Times recorded: “…Sec Lt Wearne and his small party were repeatedly counter-attacked. Grasping the fact that if the left flank was lost his men would have to give way, Sec Lt Wearne, at a moment… when matters were most critical, leapt on the parapet, and, followed by his left section, ran along the top of the trench, firing and throwing bombs. This unexpected and daring manœuvre threw the enemy off his guard and back in disorder.” Lt Wearne must have been fully aware of the sacrificial nature of his actions. The conclusion is provided in a letter written by his companion Pte J Voller to Wearne’s father: “When the enemy in the trench started to retire we followed him up. One of the Lewis gunners was wounded and Mr Wearne went towards him. But hardly had we reached him when a bomb, landing between us, Mr Wearne received his first wound (in the leg). I do not of course go into details but it was a wound that would have fully justified going back to our lines, but he refused to go. I bound him up as best I might but, as I had been hit in the chest by the same bomb that wounded him, I could not do it very well. However the enemy having retired I got him into the trench where he sat directing things as coolly as ever.”

history
Shortly afterwards Wearne was hit again, on the forehead. Pte Voller continues, “… I was doing my best of course to help him when he was hit yet again at the back of his neck and rolled over. When I saw his face, sir, I knew beyond doubt that my officer was dying. I sat beside him holding his shrapnel helmet over his face to keep off the flying stones and fragments. He turned his head towards [me] and said, ‘You have done well, Voller. Tell…’ And then he died with the same smile on his face it always wore when it was pleased.” The following month, Lt Wearne was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously, the citation recording that, “By his tenacity in remaining at his post though severely wounded and his magnificent fighting spirit, he was enabled to hold on to the flank.” He is shown in the photograph reproduced here (with thanks to Nicholas Lovell, author of VCs of Bromsgrove School); other illustrations showing him can be seen online at www. fylde.demon.co.uk/wearne.htm and his VC is now part of the Ashcroft Collection on display in the Imperial War Museum. Manor Lodge was demolished in 1971, and Royal Close was built on the site. The final house on that side of Royal Avenue was Barrow Hill, home of Auriol Auriol-Barker, after whom Auriol Park is named. This house too has gone, but the steep hill descending about 45 feet in 150 yards to Old Malden Lane is still called Barrow Hill. This month’s other illustration shows Manor Lodge (with thanks to Rene Cummins); sadly I have so far found no photographs, apart from aerial views, of Drumaline, Tunstall House or Barrow Hill (the house). Can any readers provide any? David Rymill. david.rymill@hants.gov.uk (020) 8330 6563 WPLife

The Silent Witnesses Of Worcester Park by Ruth Jemmett
ruth jemmett
We who reside in Worcester Park are fortunate enough to live in a wonderfully green and leafy area. Countless suburban roads now cover the land that was once part of Henry VIII’s hunting ground in the sixteenth century. As dwellings began to spring up and mud tracks gradually became roads over the past few hundred years, many of the original trees were built around, and they then silently witnessed the creation of our modern society. We tend to take our gentle giants for granted but they are not immune to the tricks that nature can play. Salisbury Road, where I have lived for many years, boasts beautiful trees, which grace its kerbs at regular intervals. Some might think that they have always been there, but, in fact, there were originally huge stately elms lining the road. I remember their presence when I was a child over half a century ago. (I also remember the tall brick archway that once provided a grand entrance point from the Kingston Road end). Sadly, the dreaded Dutch Elm Disease decimated the elms in the 1970s, making it necessary for the local authority to re-think its planting plan. Equally, many mature oak trees in the vicinity (not to mention the country as a whole) were literally uprooted during the great storm of 15th October 1987. Despite the mayhem that human beings inflict on their environments, many people assume that trees will always be with us, gracing our landscapes, shading us from the elements and providing us with fruits. We make this assumption at our peril. One only has to see the sorry state of some trees on the sides of motorways to realise that these large plants deserve more respect. As population numbers soar and once forested land is covered with concrete in order to build more homes and roads, many healthy specimens are hacked down by developers. They are constantly sacrificed on the altar of human greed and profit, their desecration often blighting our landscapes and threatening our eco-system. New housing schemes are increasingly nibbling away at our once protected green belt, to the detriment of people and wildlife. We have a choice as to where we live. Sometimes birds, squirrels and insects have their choice

taken away from them as yet another bulldozer takes away their homes. The modern world seems to dispose of even the most beautiful trees with alacrity, making way for yet another money-making scheme. People often lose sight of the fact that our green friends aren’t merely decorative items. We have a symbiotic relationship with them, depending upon the oxygen that they provide for our very life. Almost too late the world is realising that relentless defenestration of places such as the Amazon jungle has badly affected global weather patterns and oxygen levels. Trees aren’t only a necessary part of our life cycle but are vibrant living things with a magical existence. Special scientific instruments can pick up the pulsating gush of their sap, proving that a wooden expression can hide a secret heartbeat. The rings that one can count on the core of a tree can tell us how many years old it is. Some were even alive at the time of Christ. If only they could speak what stories they could tell! Of course tree felling is necessary if roots are interfering with buildings or drains. Equally, if a huge oak or sycamore is blocking out light then the offender has to be disposed of. However, in the normal course of events we should

think twice about the necessity of such a drastic action, and should always ask our local authority if a tree is legally protected. Many an amateur lumberjack has ruined the environment for dozens of homes.
As we become familiar with certain trees they can become like old friends, often reminding us of times when they gazed upon our laughter or our tears. People who are in touch with nature more than most are often described as “tree huggers”. Perhaps if more of them stopped for a moment in their busy lives to hug a favourite tree they might reflect on the fact that these elegant whispering entities have looked after us for thousands of years, providing us and many other creatures with shelter, food, oxygen, coal and often stunning beauty. Perhaps we should put more thought into looking after them in return. Copyright Ruth Jemmett Member of The Society of Authors WPLife

So Just How Frightened Are We?
Worcester Village Voice Park Life view from
by Justin Urquhart Stewart
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself ” Franklin D Roosevelt, 1933 So just how frightened are we? I am sure many will recall Clint Eastwood’s memorable line as Inspector Harry Callahan points a huge magnum (revolver, not ice cream) at a flailing and failing bank robber - “Do you feel lucky, punk?” Now just replace punk with the term “punter” and I can almost hear a similar intonation as the stock traders and bookies urge the would-be investor back into the market maelstrom. But is that so the punters can make money or so they can make commission? Of course in erratic days such as these, there are going to be times when shares and other investments will have dropped a great deal, and of course to some may well appear cheap. But does cheap mean good value? Not necessarily
the city
- especially if they were overvalued in the first place. However, for the discerning investment manager and, come to that, the thoughtful private investor, there are certainly opportunities for those who have the heart to see through such stormy times. Maybe it is timely to remember some of those old bon mots from the Sage of Omaha, Warren Buffett. 1- I never attempt to make money on the stock market. I buy on the assumption that they could close the market the next day and not re-open it for five years. 2- We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful. Homely little phrases they may be but nonetheless they are very sensible. After all, the market gyrations at the moment are based on economic fears, not corporate ones. Yes of course companies will be impacted by weaker economies, but you can tell from the index behaviour what they are reacting to. The slightest whiff of political initiative (now there is a rarity at the moment) and you add on a couple of percent; follow that with a nervous threat of impending recession and you can knock off the 2% again. If you fear Armageddon then it is pointless worrying. Just grab the whisky and run for the cave. However, if you think Armageddon will be delayed due to lack of interest, then

maybe take a longer view and follow the demand for business and money. Despite a recession (and in all honesty we probably aren’t quite done with the last one yet) money still gets spent and there is still demand, but just at a lower level. As I mentioned last week it will be those big businesses with a global reach that will still be operating in a healthy manner. From food to healthcare, from infrastructure to power generation, demand will continue in spite of, and in a few cases because of, the economic weakness. So here then is a more solid investment route to consider. When equity values are unreliable, government debt overvalued, cash returns running at below inflation, consider the old and most trusted investment tool compounding. My colleague Chris Birch kindly looked out the Barclays Capital Equity Gilt Study just to remind me of the figures. £100 invested in the equity market in 1945 would now (as of last year) have a nominal value of £7,932 - although after inflation sadly only £255 in real terms. Meanwhile, had you done the same calculation but with dividends being reinvested, the figure leaps to £136,107 although once again inflation reduces this to £4,370. What I find interesting as I go around the country is just how many businesses have adjusted and resized
To advertise call 020 8336 2915 themselves to the new economic conditions and are operating profitably and successfully, albeit on a smaller scale. From estate agencies through to manufacturers and even to certain retailers – adapting is the name of the game. This last group seems to have borne the brunt of the economic change as we saw with the latest figures from even the doyens of the UK retail world, namely Tesco and John Lewis. However, even here as personal budgets and debt are adjusted, a new level will be found and it is from there that the early shoots of growth will start to appear again. Also look overseas and we can still see - despite their forecasts of doom - that Eastern consumers are still spending even though the outlook coming from China is weaker. For Tesco and Burberry oriental strength has, to an extent, been balancing out occidental weakness. Meanwhile while political whims continue to provoke wild market gyrations, that will change and it will be the emergence of credible political policies and leadership that will be the trigger. Support group for canine partners looking for volunteers Worcester Park resident and dog lover Alice Child, recently launched a brand new fundraising initiative. Alice has set up a support group which will raise funds, and awareness, for national charity Canine Partners who provides specially trained assistance dogs for people with disabilities. Alice is looking for local people to join the group, and help with organising various fundraising events and activities. Canine partners are trained to help with everyday tasks such as opening and shutting doors, unloading the washing machine, picking up dropped items, pressing buttons and switches and getting help in an emergency. These life transforming dogs also provide psychological and social benefits including increased independence and confidence. The cost of each canine partner from selection as a puppy through to the end of its working life is £20,000, but the independence and confidence that dog gives to its human partner is priceless. Eileen, co founder of the support group, has Rheumatoid Arthritis and Brittle Asthma. She was joined by canine partner Icharus two years ago and explains the difference he has made to her life: “Icharus helps me around my house, picking things up for me and fetching whatever I need. The most important item he brings me is my inhaler. I have Brittle Asthma, so I am reliant on my medication. Icharus has saved my life on a couple of occasions, by fetching my inhaler from upstairs when I desperately needed it.”

thrilled to raise £161, plus as a result of the morning three people have also joined the Canine Partners Adopt a Puppy scheme. The scheme which costs just £1 a week allows supporters to follow the path of a puppy’s initial training to become a canine partner, right through into their partnership with one of the Charity’s disabled applicants.
“We are looking for willing volunteers to join us and help to change the life of a person with a disability, by raising funds to train more of these special dogs.” For more information about how you can get involved with the support group contact Alice Child on alicechild@talktalk.net. For further general information about Canine Partners, and the Adopt A Puppy Scheme, visit the website www.caninepartners.org.uk or call 08456 580 480. WPLife

The Worcester Park Dramatic Society by Peter Weisshuhn
The Worcester Park Dramatic Society is a local amateur drama group of long standing. We stage two major productions a year at the Adrian Mann Theatre in Ewell, in April and November. We meet every Tuesday and most Fridays at 8.15 pm in the Elmcroft Community Centre in North Cheam, on the Sainsbury’s site. Apart from play readings, rehearsals and set construction, we have quiz nights and various social events. We also arrange group outings to amateur and professional theatre productions. Our next production is being held 24026 November in the Adrian Mann Theatre, Ewell. You can read more about it in the synopsis opposite and advert below.

We welcome new members to help us stage future productions, anyone willing to act or work backstage. The latter includes stage management, set construction, sound and lighting. If interested, please contact our membership secretary, Joyce Cranfield, on 020 8337 3317 About ‘Separate Tables’ In the centenary of the birth of one of this country’s greatest
playwrights, we are staging Terence Rattigan’s ‘Separate Tables’. This is arguably Rattigan’s finest work, showing his great skill in the portrayal of the fragility and frailty of human relationships. The setting for the two 1-Act plays is the Hotel Beauregard over an interval of 18 months in the 1950s at the English seaside. The interactions of the guests, mostly retired permanent residents, play out dramatically against the rather starchy and unforgiving backdrop of a typical seaside hotel of the time. WPLife

Where has all the wildlife gone? by Carol Williams
BBC 2 Autumnwatch is back -Fridays nights at 8.30, and packed full of fascinating wildlife. I’ve learned a new word -zoochory; it’s the scientific term for when animals eat fruit and disperse the seeds in their dung! Also I learned that 80% of farmland birds rely on hedgerows for food and shelter, so intensively farmed land is of little use to them and that’s why so many species are in decline. Harvest mice also depend on hedgerows, as their traditional cornfield habitat is now often reaped by machine and then ploughed over. These tiny rodents. weighing less than a 2p coin, live in the long grass at the base of hedges, and in tall vegetation like brambles and rushes. They are threatened by urban development. We need to build hedgerows into our suburbs - corridors that link wildlife to the countryside and prevent isolation in small pockets that cannot thrive. Keats described Autumn as ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ and my garden is bursting with its abundance

wildlife
just now. The birds are feasting on the apples that are too high for us to pick from our old trees and the windfalls that are beginning to ferment on the lawn (nice drop of cider anyone?)! There seem to be acorns aplenty, so jays and squirrels are busy collecting and burying them and the mature ivy beneath my window is in flower as I write (early October); bees are homing in on the pollen it provides and soon it will yield a feast of berries to sustain birds through the Winter. Hedgehogs looking for somewhere to hibernate will choose an undisturbed leaf pile or the heap of wood you’ve saved for a bonfire, so please check it first... In Shadbolt Park we will be piling up wood and leaves to the back of the area behind the pond site to provide habitats, food supplies and overwintering quarters for a variety of wildlife, and building compost heaps from the vegetation we cut back. Slow worms may sometimes be found in mounds of rotting organic material. They like it for the heat it generates,

the cover it gives and the abundance of food. They are an asset to any garden, as their favourite dish is ....slugs. Slow worms are legless lizards, not snakes, and are completely harmless. They are sleek and shiny and vary in colour from grey to light copper
Grass snakes are also harmless and they are our commonest snake. Their favoured habitat is damp grass, ditches, pond banks and slow moving streams. They too like compost heaps to incubate their eggs. We hope during the Winter months to remove some of the blanket weed and fallen leaves from the pond. At present this is hampered by the amount of wildlife in there!! One of our volunteers painstakingly and lovingly removes the baby newts and the ramshorn water snails from the material in the net, placing them back in the water, before discarding the unwanted weed and leaves. You are welcome to visit us on Wednesdays and Saturdays in Shadbolt Park between 10.30 and 11.30 am to volunteer or talk about the project.
To advertise call 020 8336 2915 Wood mice All around us lives a teeming mass of small creatures, all busy about their lives, unnoticed by most of us, yet they are fascinating and wonderful. When the mornings are chilly and damp the webs that spiders have spun across bushes are often visible - take a look. They are just incredible. We could not survive in a world without green, growing plants. They provide us with our oxygen and food. Worms and microscopic organisms create the soil in which plants grow, insects pollinate the flowers so that fruits and vegetables develop. People who do not live off the land, and buy their food from shops, can lose the sense of our dependance on the natural world, and our connectedness to it.This is how we forget that destroying the environment really is ‘messing up our own back yard’. At harvest time I stand always in awe of Nature’s abundance. WPLife

It’s 1:27 am and I’m sipping a cold glass of Champagne (the French serve bubbly in coach, God bless them!), while the majority of those around me are sleeping, including my husband). I was in Nigeria for work, but I did get the chance to dine out and enjoy the nightlife, and of course I paid attention to what wines were on offer. South African wines were obviously more readily available than offerings from say, Chile, but even then the choice was limited, and it started me thinking. We are all guilty of it in our every day lives, and just like with everything else, it’s easy to get into a wine rut. In a way I feel guilty. In London I’m spoilt for choice, we have wines available to us from all over the world, from the most unusual places

and vineyards, and yet I continuously find myself reaching for the well-known wine producing regions. In future, I’m going to make a conscious effort to branch out, explore and support the weird and wonderful wines out there, and I’d like to share with you a few of the gems that I’ve already had the pleasure of trying. If you get the chance to try them, you’ll find that most of these wines will be priced at approximately £10 and over, but they will be well worth your time and money. Greece. There seems to be a kind of “only on holiday” stigma attached to Greek wines, and determined to throw off the shackles of Retsina and Demestica, there is a small band of extremely talented and determined winemakers making the wine world sit up and take notice. Gaia wines are at the forefront of the modern Greek wine revolution, creating cutting edge wines in both Nemea and Santorini. The white wines of Santorini are outstanding. The world’s oldest vineyards coupled with the unique Assyrtiko grape result in world-class whites. Look out for the Gaia Notios White Moschofilero 2010. Japan. Due to the fact that everything in the following vineyard is done by hand and the labour costs are huge, the wines are likely to start at around £15 on the shelf. Grace

winery, Katsunuma, is probably the best winery in the province. Based in the cool Yamanashi region close to Mount Fuji, it has a combination of volcanic and granitic soils and produces fabulous wines made with the indigenous Koshu grape variety. Grace Koshu Kayagatake 2010 is a gorgeous white wine grown close to Mount Fuji on volcanic soil and has a lovely delicate minerality.
India. With one of the fastest growing economies in the world, everyone is talking about India. Until recently, little was said or known about India’s small but growing wine industry. Because of the small size of this industry, it’s best to start with India’s premium winery, Sula Vineyards. Sula produce modern wines of international standard and are based 120 miles inland from Mumbai in the Nashik highlands. I love my spices, and the Sula Vineyards Shiraz 2010 is perfect to pair with tandoori dishes, mildly spiced curries, and works really well lightly chilled. At around £8.99 it’s also very well priced for a relatively unknown wine region. I’ve only just begun to scratch the surface here! We still need to talk about Morocco, Lebanon, Thailand and many more, but it’s time for me to get some sleep and perhaps dream of a time when Nigeria will have its own wine industry! Until then I’ll continue drinking outside the box. WPLife

Safer neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving
Hello everyone. Recently we have seen a slight increase in our incidents of burglary on the Nonsuch and Worcester Park wards. Therefore, I wish to remind local residents of some practical measures that they can adopt to hopefully deter this offence from occurring. Recent burglaries have happened during the daylight hours whilst a property is unoccupied because the owners are usually at work and the point of entry is usually from the back garden. Most people will have locked their doors and windows, but there are still many that don’t consider locking windows or think that one lock on a door is sufficient. In the majority of cases that may be the case, but there is always the possibility that a burglar will come along, look at a few properties, exploring the possibilities and the likelihood of an easy gain. This is where your vigilance and extra attention to security will pay dividends. It’s never too late to take extra care. Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured. There are things you can do to help deter burglars, some small things that will cost you nothing. It’s just a matter of getting into good habits. The first and most obvious is to lock all doors and windows. Do not leave any tools lying around your garden or yard, or anything a burglar may use to effect entry. Lock them securely in the garage or shed. Likewise, do not leave ladders or steps out, put them away. Trim your hedges down a bit more so that neighbours can see your property, at least from their upstairs windows (natural surveillance, leave thieves nowhere to hide). Do not leave valuables on display through your windows. Christmas presents for instance, put them somewhere they cannot be seen, or put nets up, obscuring the view inside.

policing
If you are planning to be away: Remember to cancel the delivery of milk and newspapers Security lighting, I know I said burglaries are taking place mostly during the day, but burglaries still occur at night too and don’t forget, the clocks have just gone back so it is getting dark earlier now.You can employ the use of lights that become activated with movement, so they will only come on when someone or something activates them. Disconnect the telephone answering machine, or re-word your greeting message to give the impression that you are only temporarily unable to answer. Enlist the help of a neighbour, friend or relative to keep a regular eye on your property and keep the front door clear of deliveries. If you are prepared to leave a key with a willing neighbour/ relative, ask for curtains to be drawn and lights to be put on at night. If snow is on the ground a few footprints will make the house appear inhabited. Alternatively, invest in a few timers for the lights. Check your insurance policy. Some insurance policies for contents don’t cover you if you are away for more than 30 days. Set your burglar alarm. If you do not have an alarm, consider investing a few pounds in a dummy alarm box. It may well deter the opportunist thief. None of the above measures will guarantee that you won’t be burgled. But they will go a long way to ensuring that your property will be of less interest to opportunist burglars. ‘Operation Bumblebee’ leaflets giving advice on burglary prevention can be obtained from the Worcester Park police office in Central Road. Hedge your Boundary
gardening
by Pippa Greenwood I Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening opportunities plus the living boundary may also be a real boon for wildlife, so if you’re thinking garden boundaries, think hedging. f you want a garden boundary that looks good and is green in all senses of the word, then you can’t go far wrong with a hedge. Hedges are generally grown from container-grown plants (bought at any time of year, with wellestablished root system and living in a pot) or from ‘bare root’ plants which are perfect bought at this time of year and planted straight away. Bare root hedging is not an option available for every type of plant. Some garden centres offer it, but generally for the freshest plants and widest selection you’re

better going to a hedging specialist nursery. These plants are often quite small, but great value and soon romp away, providing you with a low-cost good looking hedge. So which should you choose? Here are some of which I’m especially fond: Hornbeam: This deciduous tree makes great classic hedging and in the autumn leaves turn an attractive bright yellow. It’s long-lived and once established makes a good hedge for roosting birds. It’s easy to keep trimmed and dense, its only downside being few leaves remain in winter. Does well in sun or part shade. Beech: A tough and hardy deciduous tree that makes a great hedge. Great kept neatly clipped for a formal look. Although it does shed its leaves, they turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the end of autumn and a high percentage remain on the plants until new leaves appear in springtime. Native Hedging (including hawthorn, wild rose, guilder rose, blackthorn): Perfect for a more rural look with lots of wildlife. Native hedging is often available as a mixed selection of suitable plants, all the above planted randomly along the hedge line make a great mixed deciduous hedge which will provide shelter, nesting sites and nectar from the attractive flowers and food from the various hips and berries. Yew: Perfect for a more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and its narrow dark green leaves make a great backdrop for plants within the garden. Unlike most other evergreen hedging, if it’s allowed to grow out of hand, it does respond well to being cut back quite hard. Avoid damp sites and remember that although the end result looks great, this is one of the slower growing hedging plants. Prunus laurocerasus: Also known as the cherry laurel, it’s a large-leafed evergreen which forms a very good, dense hedge. It produces small, pretty white flowers, but if you clip the hedge regularly you rarely see many of them. The leaves are a light, glossy green, avoiding the sombre feeling some evergreen hedges can bring. Thuja plicata: Known as the western red cedar, the variety ‘Atrovirens’ makes a particularly good evergreen hedge. It grows reasonably rapidly and is often used when one would like some aspects of

a Leyland hedge but wouldn’t want its potential to get out of hand. The foliage produces a gorgeous pineapple aroma when crushed. Berberis including B.darwinii: Another very dense and attractive hedge, deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen depending on which you choose. Berberis has plenty of spines too so is often used in ‘defensive’ planting. The flowers are small but very pretty in shades of orange and yellow. Avoid very wet soils. Euonymus japonica: A great hedging plant with evergreen leaves, many with attractive variegations bringing extra colour and interest to the boundary. Avoid a wet soil and choose a sunny or partly shaded spot, making sure that the soil does not become too dry in summer. Photinia x fraseri: This evergreen shrub makes an interesting hedge and if you choose a variety such as ‘Red Robin’, you can enjoy flamboyant red patches of colour throughout the hedge in the spring as new growth is wonderfully coloured. Does best in a fertile soil with plenty of sun or part shade.

Whichever of these fantastic options takes your fancy, don’t forget the planting basics: • Plant container grown hedging plants nearly any time of year, avoiding very wet, cold or dry weather. • Plant bare-root hedging at any time that it is available, mainly late autumn to late winter or very early spring. • Prepare the ground by forking in bulky organic matter such as garden compost, bagged compost or well-rotted manure. • Most hedging is best planted with each plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a denser hedge plant in two staggered rows, each row about 30-45cm apart. • Don’t forget to keep the young hedge properly pruned – if left to grow it alone, it’ll rarely become good and dense..
