Welcome to
our November edition N ovember is one of my favourite months. It’s never too socially hectic (fireworks parties aside) and, in my
opinion, is the calm before the storm that is December – although I am sure that all of you who are organising the Christmas fairs listed in the What’s On section wouldn’t agree! You know where you stand in November – there’s none of that expectation that most of us have in the spring and summer months for consistently warm weather and the associated big disappointment when it doesn’t happen. With the exception of bonfire night it doesn’t really matter if it rains as there just aren’t so many organised outdoor activities. I speak too soon. On 8th November for 3 days the the French Market is coming to town! This is part of the mayor of London’s Outer London fund project and hopefully the first of many initiatives in the Worcester Park area. French Market
Comes to Worcester Park Stock up on continental treats when the French
Market arrives at Worcester Park High Street on 8-10 November. A range of stalls will be offering everything from delicious cheeses, sausages and dried fruits to sweets, toys and table linen. Visitors looking for something quintessentially French will be able to pick up garlic, patisserie, crepes and tartiflette while others will be offering Provencal soaps, wooden flowers and scarves – perfect for that early Christmas shopping. The market will open from 10am to 3pm and on Saturday 10 November shoppers will also be treated to a variety of street entertainers to help them browse to a beat. Cllr Jayne McCoy, Chair of Sutton’s Housing, Economy and Business Committee, said: “We are very proud to be bringing this market to Worcester Park. “Shoppers will love the added vibrancy and fun that a lively street market always brings and existing retailers
will benefit from the extra people who come to the area.” The market forms part of the mayor of London’s Outer London fund project. Sutton Council was awarded in the region of £2m funding for the two projects. They aim to create vibrant centres which encourage visitors to the high street; supporting businesses in North Cheam and Worcester Park between 2012-2014. The Outer London fund is part of a major package of investment which aims to boost local high streets, deliver growth, new jobs and improve lives. This package is made up of the Mayor’s £70m Regeneration Fund and £50m from the Mayor’s Outer London Fund, plus additional match funding from local boroughs. Projects have been chosen against key criteria according to their potential to support the good work of the boroughs and their partners to nurture sustainable growth and improve the vitality of high streets across outer London.

Worcester Park History A new status for Shadbolt Park In June we looked at Shadbolt Park, laid out in the
1920s-30s by Ernest Ifill Shadbolt as the garden of his home Darkfield (now Shadbolt Park House surgery). This month we revisit the park, prompted by the recent ceremony marking its designation as a Queen Elizabeth II Field. Darkfield was acquired by Epsom and Ewell Urban District Council in 1937, soon after Mr Shadbolt’s death, and the garden became a public park. A guide to its trees and shrubs was compiled by W J Bean for the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association (of which Mr Shadbolt had been vice-chairman). This lists 329 species from six continents. China and Japan provided around 100, including quinces, witch hazels and Viburnum. There were over 50 native specimens, and a similar number from the rest of Europe. North American species ranged from Colorado and Arizona Firs to the Kentucky Coffee Tree, and South America was represented by specimens from Chile. From North Africa came the Mt Atlas Cedar, and there were four species of daisy bush from New Zealand. The best-represented genus was Prunus, with 18 different specimens, followed by Cupressus with 13. In this one garden there were examples of Quercus from three continents, including the British Oak, the Scarlet Oak and Pin Oak from North America, the Turkey Oak from southern Europe and Asia Minor, and Quercus serrata from the Himalayas and the Far East. Many of the species listed still give pleasure to visitors: the white-flowered Indian Bean tree (Catalpa bignonioides) is a notable feature of the main lawn, to the right of the house, and the tallest tree in the wood, according to a 1973 garden trail booklet, is the Bolle’s Poplar (Populus alba ‘Bolleana’). A survey by Epsom and Ewell’s Tree Officer, Jeremy Young, and others in 2005, dealing only with trees, found 47 species listed by Mr Bean still present, including the stands of Monterey pines (Pinus radiata) and Corsican pines (Pinus nigra subsp. laricio) beside Salisbury Road and at the far end of the wood, respectively; rarer species still found included the Californian Bay (Umbellularia californica), between the pond and the path to the paddock, and the Chinese chestnut-leaf oak (Quercus serrata) on the tree lawn. Newer introductions include a Dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) on the tree lawn and the rare red buckeye (Aesculus pavia) in the wood. To the left of the new surgery entrance facing Salisbury Road are the gates to the former nursery
area. John Le Flem, who was appointed as an assistant gardener in 1958 and soon became Head Gardener, a post he held into the 1980s, at one time used this area for growing on hardwood cuttings of willows, poplars and other trees and shrubs, for re-planting in other parks in the borough; a number of the poplars

were allowed to remain, and now form a screen between this area and the tree lawn. In the mid-1990s the nursery yard took on a new role which would doubtless have appealed to Mr Shadbolt’s plant-collecting instincts, as the home of one of the National Collections of day-lilies (Hemerocallis). Day-lilies are perennials, natives of China, Japan and Siberia, producing a succession of flowers, each lasting a single day, in June to August. They are best known for orange and yellow trumpet-shaped flowers, but are now available in colours from purple to white, in various shapes. Epsom and Ewell’s first day-lily collection was formed at Rosebery Park by Borough Parks Officer Maurice Sellwood. After his retirement Roger Stedman moved it to Ewell Court, and asked the expert Helen Maltby to help identify the specimens. She offered the Borough her own collection, and it was decided to site it at Shadbolt Park. Additional varieties were obtained, and by 2001 the number had reached about 300. The collection specialised in diploids (varieties with an even number of genes) raised between 1940 and 1990. Other National Collections of day-lilies are held at Antony House in Cornwall, and in Leeds, keeping alive varieties which may have fallen out of current popularity. In 2005 the majority of the varieties were handed over to collectors through the Royal Horticultural Society, but in the following year the care of this hidden garden and the remaining specimens was handed over to the Friends of Shadbolt Park, who quickly began reinvigorating it and holding more frequent open days. The Queen Elizabeth II Fields scheme, to provide long-term protection for open spaces as a way of celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, is run by Fields in Trust, formerly the National Playing Fields Association, a nationwide charity working to protect and improve open spaces for recreation and sport. Epsom and Ewell Borough Council put forward seven open spaces for designation under this scheme, including Shadbolt Park. Each designated field is given a plaque, and Shadbolt’s was unveiled on a beautifully sunny day, 7th September. Those attending the event included representatives of the Friends of Shadbolt Park, and those who have recently restored the pond as a wildlife pond, with former Head Gardener John Le Flem as a special guest. Borough Councillor George Crawford QPM spoke about Shadbolt Park’s importance to the community, and the plaque was unveiled by the Mayor of Epsom

and Ewell, Councillor Christine Long. It has subsequently been fixed permanently on the outside of the surgery. Remembrance 2012
O nce again the 11th November Remembrance Day seems to have come
round even quicker than the year before. Our Poppy Appeal has been in full swing all year with a recent 5 mile walk which we hope has raised over £4, 000so far - figure to be confirmed when all sponsors monies are in. We have also taken up the Felix fund which supports the Bomb disposal side of our troops. This year we will be once again collecting at various points in the high street outside Iceland, Waitrose and Worcester Park station to name a few. Various shops will have collection boxes as well so please give whatever you can in loose change as it is amazing how it adds up. We will also be street collecting so watch out for us. We are all volunteers and would welcome help from anyone who has any free time at the end of October and the first week leading up to the 11th November. Our club venue in Worcester Park high street will again be holding their Poppy Dance on Saturday the 3rd November and our service night on Saturday 10th November. Then of course on the 11th November after the Remembrance parade all will be welcome back to our club for a free buffet with drinks on sale at the bar - background music by
our member Steve Murphy’s Disco. This year’s Remembrance service will be held as usual at Christ church with St Philip at 10 am sharp, it will be advisable to get there early as seating is limited and we are expecting a large congregation this year. On Saturday the 24th November we will be holding a Charity Night with Dave Marion’s Big Band. This will surely be our best ever event yet as all proceeds raised will go equally to the Poppy Appeal and Felix Fund. We are expecting a contingent of service personnel to attend the event. I would remind all members that your subs are due for renewal of your membership and of course we welcome any new members at any time just pop in and see us at the club. Ruth Jemmett Writes Mr Micawber’s Wise Words W hen the writer Charles Dickens penned David
Copperfield in 1849 he introduced us to a character - Mr Micawber - who will doubtlessly be remembered for the following words: “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen six result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six - result misery.” Even people who are unfamiliar with sterling currency will surely appreciate the message in the quotation, which is quite simply “Don’t live beyond your means”. The Bible tells us that love of money is the root of all evil. There is no doubt that lack of it, often due to one’s financial imprudence, can encourage people to take unwise paths, which can lead to both relationship misery, and sometimes crime. In these recession-hit times it is very tempting to ignore monetary common-sense whilst trying to keep up with the Joneses - or any other family in Worcester Park - particularly as Christmas looms ever nearer, and the temptation to overspend gets ever greater. At this time of the year credit card companies seem to fall over themselves in their efforts to encourage us to live our dreams now and pay for them later. It is precisely this sort of thinking that has got our country, and indeed the world - into the biggest financial mess in history. Every year, just after Christmas, divorce lawyers start to rub their hands with glee, happy in the knowledge that it is the peak time for couples to commence divorce proceedings. Once happily married people will find many reasons to go their separate ways, including personal incompatibility, trouble with in-laws, infidelity and so on, and way up there as a prime cause of dissent will be arguments caused by money problems. When people consider getting married they are usually so consumed with thoughts of the colours of bridesmaids’ dresses and how the wedding cake will be decorated that many of them give scant thought to how they will manage their budgets in the future. Many couples think nothing of borrowing obscene amounts of money to pay for their Big Day (the average British wedding now costs between £15,000 and £25,000 ) without paying due attention to how they will pay a gas bill six months later. Our educational system delights in teaching the upcoming generation the joys

of new technology, but how many school-leavers are equipped to deal with the reality of juggling the horrors of, say, sudden redundancy, when a mortgage payment is due? This is the time of year when children ‘must’ have a toy or game that is being promoted by the media, and their parents are made to feel guilty if they don’t have it. I am sure that you - like me - are being inundated with catalogues plopping on to your front door mats, trying to tempt you into buying gifts and baubles that you don’t really need. It is all too easy to mutter to yourself “Oh, you’ve only got one life” as you find yourself purchasing some gaudy trinket which is inordinately expensive for someone you haven’t seen for a year, just because it is the festive thing to do. If you can see yourself sliding down that slippery Yuletide slope (I admit to having sinned on that score many times. I still have that singing imitation Christmas tree with the nightmarish flashing red eyes stored in the garage ….!) what can you do? 1) Make a list of your total household income for the month, and your outgoings. Remembrance Day
An ex- Worcester Park resident’s thoughts
A t the age of 14, I already knew what I wanted to be when I grew up! Either a policewoman or
join the Army. At the time, my half-sister Jean was serving in Saudi Arabia working in a hospital as a nurse and I wanted to spread my wings - travel the world, meet people and learn a profession and that’s exactly what I did! In 1978, I joined the Women’s Royal Army Corps, WO462674 Private Jennifer Campbell – an inexperienced and rather naïve shorthand writer/ servicewoman completed basic training in Guildford and trade training in Deepcut. Imagine my excitement and anticipation when I heard that my first posting was to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in Belfast – 1979. Later on, I realised that this was what one might call – being thrown in at the deep end! I received “danger money” of one pound a day – I was 19 years old and oh, was I happy! I literally didn’t know then that I was a sniper’s dream for a walking target! But I survived the ordeal and was awarded the Northern Ireland Campaign Medal. I am certain that one has to experience military life

World War II war veterans but for all past and present wars. I searched for my Northern Ireland medal which was neatly wrapped in the same presentational issue tissue paper. I noticed that the attachment clip had fallen off and as the medal looking rather neglected and a little rusty, I vigorously bulled it up army-style (polished). I wore it with pride on the left hand side of my purchased navy coat which was the first time since leaving the army - precisely 20 years ago! I had visited the Royal British Legion, Central Road on a few occasions and enjoyed chatting to ex-servicemen about their time in the Army, Air Force and Navy; and true to say, I very rarely came across a single ex-servicewoman with whom I could share the same experience. It has always been my wish that people could inform themselves better about military life and try to understand the sacrifice that service personnel endure to carry out their duty. When I reflect on military life – hard as it was – it was one of the most life changing experience of my life and I survived the trials and tribulation. December at 11am and raise much needed funds for the Hospice St Raphael’s Hospice (www.straphaels.org.uk) is seeking people to join the Santa Dash at Nonsuch Park, Cheam, on Saturday 8 December at 11am and raise much needed funds for the Hospice. The Santa Dash is a fun event for all the family, where all participants complete the Dash dressed as Santa. The length of the dash is approximately three quarters of a mile and participants can walk, run, jog or trot the route. The route is also suitable for wheelchairs. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead. Although the Hospice is based in London Road, North Cheam, it treats terminally ill patients from all areas of the Boroughs of Sutton and Merton. Suzi Forland, Events Fundraiser, St Raphael’s Hospice, says “We want as many people as possible to take part. We do supply the “one size fits all” Santa suit – although there is a toddler size available as well.

Although there is no minimum sponsorship, we would love each participant to raise at least £30 which is equivalent of paying a Hospice nurse for two hours. Sponsorship can be raised by using our official form or by creating a Just Giving page online. “There were 210 “Santas” taking part in our Santa Dashes last year in Nonsuch Park, Cheam and Wimbledon Common. These raised over £10,500 for the hospice – so we hope to do the same with this year’s events.” How to join Entry fees are £10 for adults, £5 for under 16s or £20 for a family group of two adults and two children or £30 for a corporate team of four adults or friends. Worcester Park Dramatic Society The Worcester Park
Dramatic Society is a local amateur drama group of long standing. We stage two major productions a year at the Adrian Mann Theatre in Ewell, in April and November. Our 2011 production of ‘The Militants’ won the coveted NODA London Flame Award. The photo shows the cast of our production of Terrence Rattigan’s ‘Separate Tables’. We meet every Tuesday and most Fridays at 8.15 pm in the Elmcroft Community Centre in North Cheam, on the Sainsbury’s site. Apart from play readings, rehearsals and set construction, we have quiz nights and various social events. We also arrange group outings to amateur and professional theatre productions. We welcome new members to help us stage future productions anyone willing to act or work backstage.

The US raises the roof - well just a little! by Justin Urquhart Stewart
Iencouraging f you want to spot an sign in the US
economy, then it’s probably worth looking at its most decimated sector for the past few years - property. If ever there was a sector more prone to fashion peaks and depressive falls, it has to be residential property. Of course we have seen a similar phenomenon back in the UK, but certainly not the devastating destruction that blighted much of middle American citizens’ primary asset. It’s not just that theirs are mostly wood and boards and ours are bricks and mortar, but far rather that primarily the US has an oversupply and the UK still has a shortage - oh yes and a few Russians to keep west London suitably buoyant. After the boom of building and dodgy mortgages for all, we saw the fall of the forlorn into regional areas of blight
and depression which reminds me of the quote about banks from Thomas Jefferson “I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.” And that was in 1802. How prescient of him. However, from the disastrous crash there are now more consistent signs of stability and even growth in some key areas. This has seemingly been enough to start to encourage the magic word for any economy to start moving again - confidence. For an example of its importance to the US economy, residential investment accounted for 4% of US GDP over the quarter of a century before 2005, and now merely some 2.5% since 2008. In the early years after 2000 new home sales were running at 900,000, but then dropped back to a mere 300,000. Such a drop has quite a dramatic ripple, or a rather larger wave effect in terms of scale. After all, it’s not just the building, but the fitting out with the kitchens, bathrooms etc., all of which ensure that more money is spent throughout the economy. And this of course highlights one of the key measures of an economy - namely its ability to move money through the system the velocity of money. Something which our Chancellor should pay attention to when considering house building and the stupidity of Stamp Duty. The main property index in the US is the S&P Case Shiller Composite 20 City Home Prices index, and this has seemingly risen by 8% since March, and it would seem that the foundations for a more solid recovery could be in place. After all, the affordability levels seem to be returning as the relationship between household incomes and house prices are back to where they were 30 years ago. No such change in the UK as yet. Add to this the reduced amount of stock being available and an increase in mortgage availability and you have the necessary ingredients coming together for something significantly more positive. Given the importance of the consumer to the US GDP, anything which improves the perception of the property market will only provide a further needed shot of encouragement for Joe Schmo, and anything that helps his US middle-American family can only ripple out to help the world economy. Acute oak decline
Roger Kerr RJ Tree Services There is a great deal of concern over the rapid
spread of Acute Oak Decline (AOD) since it was first recorded in 2002; it has been likened to the devastating effect of Dutch Elm disease in the 1970’s that caused the death of millions of Elm trees across England. The Oak trees affected are of the Sessile and Pendunculate species, the ones most vulnerable are those aged over 50 years and located in the midlands and south of England. The bacteria believed to be the cause is phytophthora ramorum it is harmless to humans but has dire effects on these trees. The symptoms are a bleeding from the trunk and branches, this is a dark sticky fluid that could be one of the means by which the disease spreads. In addition to this the tree canopy gradually thins over a 3 to 5 year period as the disease develops; the weakened condition of the tree makes them vunerable to other pests including
the wood boring larvae of the buprestid beetle. A range of other opportunistic pests and diseases continue to exploit the trees as the AOD further develops. The means by which the disease spreads is still very much open to debate by professional organisations. The theories range from humans spreading the bacterium by walking around infected and then clean woodlands to the cause being from squirrels, birds and even insects. An amount of pressure is being put on the government to fund research into AOD looking at how it spreads, if it can be prevented or minimised, the main concern at the moment is over the very fast rate of spread. Management of Oaks with suspected or diagnosed AOD centres on the control of potential spread. If you suspect your Oak tree may have this disease ask a qualified arborist like R J Trees to inspect the tree and advise you on the options. A solitary Oak

Banstead Organ & Keyboard Club M y name is Sue Poulter and I am the Secretary of the Banstead Organ and Keyboard Club. I first
wrote in this magazine in 2009 to tell you all about our club, following our move from Sutton to Banstead. I was hoping that I would be able to get local people interested in our club and it certainly worked. So I am going to try and enthuse some more of you to come along and sample what we have to offer. Our group produces a concert monthly at the All Saints Institute Hall, High Street, Banstead, Surrey showcasing professional keyboard players from all over the UK and some from Europe too. The music covers many musical genres to suit all tastes but it is definitely not an organ recital or a rock concert. Modern organs and keyboards are best described as imitative instruments as they can replicate almost any musical instrument and percussion. A whole orchestra, big band or jazz band, produced by just one musician two hands and feet! If you have never seen or heard a concert organist playing one of these instruments I’m
sure you will be very impressed at their skill and the amazing sound they produce. Each concert is different and we try to book a variety of players to show a variety of sounds and styles using different makes and models of keyboards. We now have many people from the Stoneleigh, Worcester Park and New Malden areas joining us on a regular basis so why not give it a try. New visitors are always welcome. On and off street parking is within a few steps from the hall and we usually meet on the second Monday of the month (altered for Bank Holidays). Entrance is £7 on the door but if you are coming for the first time contact me on 020 8330 5795 and I will arrange free tickets for you. Celebrity tweets support appeal R adio Marsden will go off-air permanently if an appeal to fund vital
new studio equipment fails. Based at Sutton’s world-renowned Royal Marsden cancer hospital the radio station will be forced to stop broadcasting if £50,000 is not raised to replace ageing equipment. The shock announcement came as veteran Radio 2 broadcaster Ken Bruce joined Radio Marsden Chairman Jason Reynolds this week to launch an appeal to save the station. The BBC presenter is the first of a host of celebrities who will be giving their backing over the next few weeks to the Charity by having their photograph taken with the Radio Marsden Bear and tweeting details of the appeal to their followers. “Hospital radio is so important to people who have to spend time in a ward and Radio Marsden has been,

Worcester Park Postcard Raising Funds For St. Raphael’s In September’s WP Life, local historian
and author, David Rymill, informed readers of the return of an 86 yearold oil painting of Worcester Park. This artwork provides a rare, visual record of our town in its previous life, as a romantic, countryside location, showing open fields, punctuated by woodlands and clusters of grazing farm animals – all shortly to make way for our suburban houses. More recently, my own discussions with residents in and around Sparrow Farm Road, together with a few 1930s photographs of the area have added weight to the conclusion that this was the location that the artist chose for his painting. The viewpoint looks roughly northwest, from the London Road, towards Worcester Park station and Old Malden beyond. This rare colour record of Worcester Park, depicted

quite literally as a park, prompted requests from residents for an affordable copy of the image. Combining this with the additional aim of raising charitable funds for St. Raphael’s Hospice, I commissioned a postcard reproduction, which is currently on sale at the newspaper kiosk at Worcester Park station, thanks to Paul, the proprietor. The postcards are priced at £1, are British made and manufactured using paper only from environmentally sustainable sources. All proceeds from every sale will be donated to St. Raphaels and thanks to the financial assistance of Waitrose (Worcester Park), each £1 postcard sale will raise 66p for St. Raphael’s. I am also hoping to put the postcards on sale at other locations. In the meantime, if you’d like a postcard and can’t easily get to Worcester Park Station, please let me know. W hy we love the Spanish,
I was recently very lucky to have an opportunity to travel to probably the most popular city break, holiday and mass migration destination of Spain. Fortunately, we do not only love to go there but also love to bring a bit of Spain back with us. Yes, we all know about tapas, jamon and manjana but it’s the wine of Rioja that really has a hold on us and that is exactly where I found myself… lucky, lucky me! My personal opinion of the Spanish was (whether fair or not), is that they are a little prone to exaggeration. I’m not saying that their isn’t a formidable amount to boast about, after all historically they have had at one point the worlds greatest naval fleet, terrorized their enemies with the Inquisition and somehow filled the world with fantastic Rioja. For the life of me I could not figure out how they could possibly make so much Rioja, I mean where on earth do they grow all those grapes? I was on a mission to discover the truth! Having landed in Bilbao, at a beautiful little airport in the heart of the Basque country, we set off in our mini bus and in just over an hour we had hit a seemingly never ending sea of vineyards. La Rioja is absolutely vast, who knew! We drove through Rioja, on an almost “Germanically” engineered highway, smooth, wide and well signposted, for over an hour and other than an occasional hill top village, there was nothing but vineyards as far as the eye could see. Obviously I was in awe and was becoming increasingly excited about what the next 24 hours would bring. Our first stop was the Bodega (winery) Escudero, where we were met by a gentleman who introduced himself as Jesus! From the road you could see nothing more than a non-descript, unassuming two storey building upon a steep hill. The cellars were vast and because of the hilltop position of the Bodega, there were huge doors that opened up at the far end to reveal a breathtaking view of their vineyard, which stretched across the beautiful valley below us. I was blown away and we hadn’t even tried the wines yet! As the day drew to the close we made our way to our Hotel at a ‘finca’, or farm. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the sight of a massive beautifully designed, ultra modern concrete and glass building, sitting on top of another hill bathed in ambient lighting and surrounded by vineyards. Idyllic stuff! Dinner was served, wine flowed

and all too soon it was time to turn in. Breakfast in the morning was followed by a quick tour of the bodega and a wine tasting (talk about hair of the dog!). Later that afternoon, we made our way to the final vineyard where we were greeted by Julio who spoke no English and even though my Spanglish had vastly improved already, it wasn’t nearly good enough to have an in depth conversation. Hence, we cut out all the technicalities of how the grapes were harvested, fermented and bottled and made the communication very, very simple. How, you ask? Julio passed the corkscrew, a bottle was opened and we commenced trying the wines. Beautifully simple and so effective! I completely fell in love with the region, the people and of course the wines, and decided that it would be unfair not to bring them back to Worcester Park and let you try them for yourself at our Spanish fiesta on the 23rd November! I promise I will, like Julio, let the wines speak for themselves. I hope to see you there. WPLife

The Friends of Worcester Park Library TWorcester he Pop-Up Gallery, Park, recently
hosted a private view to thank the local artists, volunteers and supporters who made the project possible. We celebrated the successful conclusion of our two month long temporary art exhibition. ‘Pop-Ups’ are temporary uses of vacant shops, this was the first in the local area. Temporary uses of empty shops benefit local communities and businesses - by making high streets safer, busier, and more attractive to visitors. Rents and rates are often waived to allow community groups or new businesses to develop which helps to stimulate the local economy.

The Library’s Pop-Up rejuvenated the vacant shop at the top of the High street (44 Central Road,) which was the old Model Road and Rail, and had previously been unoccupied. The Pop-Up Gallery hosted a temporary exhibition, children’s craft area and related programme of events. The project was curated by Worcester Park Library and staffed by volunteers from the Friends Group and Craft Club. The project was successfully funded through the Local Committee’s participatory budgeting programme. The exhibition showcased works by local artists, many from local colleges and local community groups. Graduates of Wimbledon School of Art displayed a selection of paintings, prints, sculptures and film installations. Cheam Common Art Group, who meet weekly at St Philips and Christchurch – and exhibit regularly - displayed a noteworthy collection of their paintings. The children’s craft area was a great place for families to visit, play and create artworks. Children were offered the chance to paint and draw surrounded by inspirational examples. Or explore the exhibition through the gallery trail. The event programmes encouraged visitors to enjoy making artworks such as painting on canvas and felt making. Family and community events included gallery based storytime and baby music classes. As we complete our project we are pleased to announce that another organisation will move into the once empty space. The Pop-Up contributed toward the Council’s aims of developing the High Street and local area. Seasonal recipe Venison Casserole V enison is a lean and flavoursome red meat which is in season from October through to
February. For the best quality, buy from a trusted butcher or farmers’ market. This warming casserole is perfect for a weekend supper served with creamy mashed potato and a glass of full-bodied red wine. • 1.3 kg diced venison • 425ml red wine • 1 tsp juniper berries • 2 fresh bay leaves • 2 tbsp olive oil • 25g butter • 350g shallots or button onions, peeled • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 2 tbsp seasoned flour • 300ml hot beef or vegetable stock • 2 large parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks • 4 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks • few sprigs fresh thyme • salt and freshly ground black pepper • creamy mashed potato, to serve Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole.

Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas Mark 2. Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7 minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole. Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender. Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked. VVoice

Leopards, elephants, lynx and badgers?
Seen in Shadbolt Park recently leopard SLUGS and elephant HAWK MOTHS! And a toad sheltering beneath a log. Leopard slugs have spots, hence the name. Apparently they are widespread all over Europe, and found in gardens, parks, hedgerows and anywhere damp, but I’d never really noticed them before we spotted one in Shadbolt Park, beneath a pile of wood we were shifting. They are nocturnal and not very
active, eating dead plants and fungi and some other slug species! Wikipedia tells me they were first recorded in England in 1667 and that they live for up to 3 years. There was also some fascinating information about their sex lives (go look)! We were also delighted to find a small toad beneath a log - evidence that toads are about, which means all three amphibian species inhabit Shadbolt Park. An elephant hawk moth caterpillar was spotted in September on rose bay willow herb near the pond edge. They too are commonly found in parks, but, again, I’d never seen one before. The caterpillars feed on willow herb, fuchsia and bedstraw, the adult moths on nectar. They overwinter as chrysalides amongst low vegetation or in the soil. Anyone interested in seeing what lurks beneath the water and the weed in the pond, come along on Saturday mornings between 10.30 and 11.30 and you will see a couple of ice cream tubs with a sample inside! We don’t have badgers in the park, but they’ve been in the news a lot recently because of the threatened cull. I’ve signed petitions and written to my MP, protesting

against this, because, as a wildlife lover, I am sick of seeing wild creatures demonised, persecuted or simply given no respect by so many who seem to think they are an inconvenience or a nuisance with no right to existence alongside us. Simon Cowell of the Wildlife Aid Foundation calls the cull an ‘absurdity’ and says that there must be farmers and some anti wildlife MPs who are less concerned about the problem of bovine TB and just want to seize the opportunity to wipe out badgers. In Scotland there is vaccination and no bovine TB; but vaccination is more expensive than allowing folk to go out with a gun..... In September I visited a place called Wildwood in Canterbury where I saw, up close, some delightful badgers and many other beautiful animals. In 40 acres of ancient woodland are over 300 native animals - wolves, bison, wild boar, beaver, badger, pine marten, konik ponies and lynx, to name only a few. The two lynx, who are sisters, were the highlight for me. They were smaller than I imagined, having never seen one before ( about collie size). Lynx have been absent from Britain for over 1500 years, having become extinct in the wild here through habitat loss and hunting for their fine fur. The conservation work being done at Wildwood is inspiring ( go to their website for more details www.wildwoodtrust. org). As you might expect, I am a supporter of ‘rewilding’ which is a large scale conservation effort aimed at
restoring and protecting core wilderness areas, with the re-introduction or protection of apex predators and keystone species (which, although often seemingly insignificant, have a crucial role to play in maintaining the structure of an ecological community). An ambitious and visionary programme called Rewilding Europe wants to make Europe a wilder place, with much more space for wildlife, wilderness and natural processes. That appeals greatly to me. A world where only the animals and plants that humans consider useful are allowed to live anywhere, let alone free, would be a very impoverished and sad place, in my view, and that’s not the world I want to leave to those who come after me. Leaves
by Pippa Greenwood A re you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? The deluge that falls at this time of year is often enough to make even the most level headed, tree-loving gardener eye up a chainsaw. So what can you do? Turn them in to gardeners’ gold: leafmould. If you want an environmentally friendly and very effective soil conditioner or mulching material, leafmould is the answer. If you have the space, make yourself a leafmould cage. Simply drive four treated softwood stakes into the ground, each stake marking out one corner of the ‘cage’. The stakes need to be about 1.5m (5ft) long so that they can be driven in really well, to a depth of 1-2ft, leaving 3-4ft above ground. Then attach some galvanized chicken wire to the stakes to create the sides of the cage and cram the cage full of leaves. If they aren’t moist, add a watering can of water to the heap of leaves, pouring some in after each six inches of leaves. You can also speed up the process by using a leafmould activator (available from garden centres, mail order catalogues and websites). Most deciduous leaves rot down well, especially oak and beech trees. Leaves from fruit trees, garden shrubs and climbers work well too. Try to avoid including too many twigs or evergreen leaves as these take much longer to rot, as do tough, leathery leaves such as those from sycamore, horse chestnut and plane. Most of us collect leaves using a spring-tined rake and although slower, it helps you avoid some materials more easily. A leaf sucker or a leaf blower is quicker but will often mean you end up with more twigs and stones. If your leaves are a wide-ranging assortment, then a good idea is to use the lawn mower – just mow the lawn with the leaves on it. The collection bag on the mower will then be full of a brilliant mix of chopped leaves and even the slower-to-rot-down types will rot speedily as they have been chopped up quite finely. Mixed with the lush, high-nitrogen grass clippings, the whole process is sped up. If space, time or money are short then you can also make leafmould in a bin liner or bin bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top of the bag and weigh it down with a brick. You should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but the longer you leave it the better. Leafmould will help to improve the moisture-retaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and reduce the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can
be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? Safer Neighbourhoods Burglaries by PCSO Gary Weaving of burglary on the Nonsuch and Worcester Park wards. Therefore, I wish to remind local residents of some practical measures that they can adopt to hopefully deter this offence from occurring. Most people lock their doors and windows, but there are still many that don’t consider locking windows or think that one lock on a door is sufficient. In the majority of cases that may be the case, but there is always the possibility that a burglar will come along, look at a few properties, exploring the possibilities and the likelihood of an easy gain. This is where your vigilance and extra attention to security will pay dividends. It’s never too late to take extra care. Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured. There are things you can do to help deter burglars, some small things that will cost you nothing. It’s just a matter of getting into good habits. - The first and most obvious is to lock all doors and windows. - Do not leave any tools lying around your garden or yard, or anything a burglar may use to effect entry. Lock them securely in the garage or shed. - Likewise, do not leave ladders or steps out, put them away. - Trim your hedges down a bit more so that neighbours can see your property, at least from their upstairs windows (natural surveillance, leave thieves nowhere to hide). - Do not leave valuables on display through your windows. Christmas presents for instance, put them somewhere they cannot be seen, or put nets up, obscuring the view inside. If you are planning to be away: - Remember to cancel the delivery of milk and newspapers Security lighting: I know a lot of burglaries take place during the day, but burglaries still occur at night too and don’t forget, the clocks have just gone back so it is getting dark earlier now. You can employ the use of exterior floodlights that become activated with movement, so they will only come on when someone or something activates them. - Disconnect the telephone answering machine, or re-word your greeting message to give the impression that you are only temporarily unable to answer. - Enlist the help of a neighbour, friend or relative to keep a regular eye on your property and keep the front door clear of deliveries. - If you are prepared to leave a key with a willing neighbour/ relative, ask for curtains to be drawn and lights to be put on at night. If snow is on the ground a few footprints will make the house appear inhabited. Also, a few timers that can be used with the lights, a TV or a radio are a very

worthwhile investment. They can be easily programmed to come on as darkness falls and go off at a time that you would normally retire. Used thoughtfully with closed curtains these give the appearance that there is somebody home. A burglar arrested in Sutton last year and is now serving 3.5 years for seven burglaries admitted that his method was to walk along roads as it was getting dark observing the houses that remained in darkness. It was those houses he targeted. - Check your insurance policy. Some insurance policies for contents don’t cover you if you are away for more than 30 days. - Set your burglar alarm. If you do not have an alarm, consider investing a few pounds in a dummy alarm box. It may well deter the opportunist thief. None of the above measures will guarantee that you won’t be burgled. But they will go a long way to ensuring that your property will be of less interest to opportunist burglars. See you next month. WPLife
