Worcester Park History
Remembering the 1915 casualties from Cuddington by David Rymill
As we approach Remembrance Sunday, we commemorate the three men named on the war memorial in St Mary’s Church, Cuddington, as having died 100 years ago, in 1915 – one of whom is also the only casualty from 1915 named on the memorial outside St John’s Church in Old Malden. S/Lt Alfred Cecil Armitage was the younger son of Alfred and Mary Armitage who lived in The Court, also known as Worcester Court, the mansion which stood near the top of The Avenue on the site now occupied by Worcester Gardens. The house had been built in the 1870s for Alexander Hector, the explorer and merchant, and his wife, the novelist ‘Mrs Alexander’. One of our illustrations this month shows the view along Royal Avenue, across The Avenue to Worcester Court. Alfred Cecil Armitage served in the 1st Battalion of The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. The battalion’s war diaries – which can be read online at www.queensroyalsurreys.org.uk/war_diaries/ local/1Bn_Queens.shtml – show that he joined the battalion at Bethune in north-eastern France on 28th May 1915. On 25th June the battalion received orders to move to Beuvry, between two and three miles southeast of Bethune, to take part in digging advanced second line entrenchments, and they moved into billets in the western part of Beuvry. S/Lt Armitage, and Private Frederick John Parsons from Brockham, were accidentally killed on 21st July through the explosion of a Battye hand grenade during a practice, a few days before the battalion went into the trenches at Cuinchy, a little to the east. Both were aged 19; they were buried at Beuvry Cemetery. Coincidentally, the war diaries record that Captain T Weeding joined the battalion two days before S/Lt Armitage; this was presumably the Thomas Weeding – son of T W Weeding who lived in Addlestone but was the owner of Fullbrooks and
6
extensive property in Malden and Worcester Park – who was eventually a Major in this battalion; one wonders if they ever discovered their Worcester Park connection. Captain Alec Vaughan Thomas was killed at Gallipoli. He was one of 16 officers of the 2nd Hampshire Regiment who failed to return from an attack on the Turkish trenches on 6th August 1915. He was the elder son of John Alick Thomas who lived at The Croft, 50 The Avenue (on the corner of Salisbury Road). He was educated at Parkside School, which had been established in 1879 in a large house with extensive grounds running across the land now occupied by Timbercroft and Sterry Drive, on the borders of Worcester Park and Ewell. The development of the surrounding area caused the school to move further into the country in 1933: after sharing premises with another school in Epsom for a year it moved to East Horsley, and is now at Stoke D’Abernon. The Headmaster from 1902 was Alfred Vaughan Pott, who remained until 1916 when he became a private in the Italian Red Cross. Four of his former pupils were awarded the VC: Lt Tom O L Wilkinson (killed 1916) received the decoration for ‘great courage in driving back the enemy and attempting the rescue of wounded comrades’; Lt Alec Buller Turner single-handedly halted an enemy thrust down a communication trench near Vermelles in 1915, and died of the wounds he received on that occasion; his brother Lt-Col Victor Buller Turner twenty-seven years later won the only VC awarded at El Alameins; finally, Brigade-Major Billy Congreve,

who won the VC in the Rifle Brigade in 1916 was a private pupil of Mr Pott. I am grateful to the present Headmaster of Parkside School for permission to reproduce a photograph of the 1905 First XI football team. Alec Thomas is shown in the centre, with the football. As Michael Davis, a former Headmaster of Parkside, points out in one of his books about the school, Pussdog Papers (Parkside 1879-1998), all but one of the team members were either decorated for bravery or killed in action; Alec Buller Turner VC is shown at the front right. Alec Thomas’s father was the architect of St Mary’s Church, as well as being a parishioner (and long-serving churchwarden), and he designed the memorial on which both his sons are commemorated. The family were also involved with St John’s, Old Malden, and so he is also named on the memorial there. Rifleman John Benjamin Cox enlisted at Kingston early in September 1914 and gave his age as 19 years and four days. He was the son of Charles and Annie Cox of Nonsuch Farm, better known as

Warren Farm, to the south-east of Nonsuch Park. John Cox joined the King’s Royal Rifle Corps and was assigned to the 12th Battalion when that was formed on 21st September. They left Folkestone for France on 22nd July 1915, and on 26th August were assigned a position in the trenches, south of Laventie, with the rest of the 20th Division. According to the regimental chronicle, in wording reminiscent of All Quiet on the Western Front, ‘the situation remained normal until September 25th’ when the battalion came under heavy shell-fire in the front-line trenches, but John Cox had been killed on 12th September, and was buried in a military cemetery at Laventie. The war memorial records Rifleman Cox’s age at his death as 20, in accordance with the age he gave on enlisting, but the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission state that he was 17, and the registration of his birth in 1898 confirms that he had evidently exaggerated his age and enlisted at the age of 16.
The Remembrance Sunday service at St Mary’s Church, at the top of The Avenue, on 8th November, will start at 10.15am so that the usual two minutes’ silence can be observed at 11am. There will be a visiting speaker, Richard Bird from the Armed Forces’ Christian Union. Ruth Jemmett Writes November’s Here Write Those Lists! Ruth Jemmett Reminds Us That A Happy Christmas Needs Early Planning When we are young we are given Happy Christmases. Once we adopt the mantle of adulthood, it becomes our duty to become the givers, and we learn to live with the tyranny of The Lists. Despite so-called equality of the sexes, it usually falls to women to write the never-ending lists for the festive season, and to fret about which relatives will be upset about not being invited somewhere or other. A few years ago, as I rushed past my husband in our hall, juggling Christmas Cards and tinsel, he gave a sigh, and said “You do realise that if you weren’t here, I wouldn’t bother with any of this?” I am afraid it is in the female genes to care too much about too many people, whereas I think many a man would be more than happy to spend Christmas on a desert island, chewing on a drumstick and playing with a laptop. I suppose that in our own weird masochistic way, despite unrelenting stress and exhaustion, we women enjoy giving a happy time to our nearest and dearest. In my house the secret of avoiding complete chaos is to look at THE FILE in November. It is updated each year, so that I can chart which people have been given which gifts in the past. I also usually perform the sombre ritual of crossing out the names of people who have fallen off the perch - plus those who haven’t bothered to send us cards or gifts in recent times! Also in THE FILE is The Giant Grocery List, The Christmas Cards Only List, and the Christmas Cards AND Gifts List, the Who To Tip List, and the What To Cook List etc. I think you get the idea. As Catalogue Woman I work my way through the chaos in November, so that when Advent arrives on 29th of November, there is some sense of organisation. If the system works (which certainly isn’t fool-proof ) by the time December is upon us I can do The Big Shopping Trips, happy in the knowledge that a fully-blown nervous breakdown has been averted! November can be a pretty depressing month, with its chilly weather and increasingly bleak landscape, so it’s just as well that we can look forward to a jolly occasion
a few weeks down the road. Yes, of course Christmas is meant to be a Christian festival, but sadly commerce seems to have smothered its original message in recent years, and we are urged to feel the festive fun much earlier than December. Have you noticed that the television adverts for toys start to rev up in October? November was the ninth month of the Roman Calendar. The last leaves fall from deciduous trees this month, and some animal species, such as dormice and hedgehogs, go into

hibernation. If you wrap up warmly you will have the opportunity to see two meteor showers this month - The Taurids (best view 3rd of November), and The Leonids (best view 18th of November). Most children will particularly look forward to 5th November, when we celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Night. On this day in 1605, Guido Fawkes, as he was known, with other conspirators, planned to blow up The Houses of Parliament during its State Opening, which was to be attended by the King. Government troops lay in wait for them, and the plot was foiled. Contrary to popular belief, Guy Fawkes was born of Protestant parents. How I loved Fireworks Night when I was a child. There was something magical about the sights and smells of the occasion, despite the fact that the Health and Safety Brigade would have had apoplexy! Because of safety issues large organised displays are now the order of the day, but I still miss the excitement of spent rocket sticks landing on your head! Remembrance Sunday will fall on 8th of November. It is the day when we mainly remember those who have fallen in two World Wars. Ceremonies will take place in cities, towns and villages throughout the British Isles in commemoration of those who fought on our behalf, so that we could retain our freedom. As a child who was born in 1946, I remember looking at the bomb sites in London, and giving thanks that I had not witnessed the horrors of The Blitz. Youngsters these days have known nothing but peace, and invariably take our freedoms for granted. Those of you who like to follow Tales From Ruth’s pond, will be interested to know that it has more occupants! I recently acquired five more fish - four goldfish, and one Shubunkin. They joined seven other residents. Some of the fish went missing during the summer months, despite a net being in place. We don’t think that our local heron (see attached pic showing it on our neighbour’s roof) was guilty, as how could he get in there? The Ghost Koi seem to be getting a bit bigger, and appear to have smug smirks on their faces, so we have our theories! Perhaps they see their smaller chums as starter courses! Sadly I have had to say goodbye to two trees in my rear garden. A silver birch had roots that were pushing up paving stones, and a conifer simply went brown and died. I would urge anyone who doesn’t HAVE to get rid of our beautiful local trees to refrain from turning our lovely area into a concrete jungle. Trees can take generations to grow, and should not be disposed of on a whim. The loss of one big tree can ruin the view for dozens of other people, and take away the privacy they have valued for years. Several trees in this locality have preservation orders on them, so it is always wise to check with the local council before you attempt to become an
12
amateur lumberjack. I am very busy in the greenhouse at the moment, busily potting cuttings. As the writer Karl Foerster once said “If I’m ever reborn, I want to be a gardener. There’s too much to do in one lifetime!!” I would like to wish our American cousins a happy Thanksgiving Day, and my Scottish relatives a Happy St Andrew’s Day 0n 30th. Now where did I put THE FILE???!!! Ruth Jemmett is a Member of The Society of Authors

LACK OF SUPPLY
EVER REDUCING
The London market may have calmed but prices on the periphery continue to rise. This autumn the market remains strong and, due to a lack of supply, prices are holding very firm with smaller properties attracting particularly high interest and consequently achieving very good prices. There are a number of factors in play here and they are a sign of the times.
Compounding the issue is the fact that there weren’t that many 1-2 bedroom properties built in the area. There is a real shortage of physical stock. Those that currently live in them tend to stay put longer as they cannot afford the next level up. Meanwhile investors snapping up properties will hold them for the long term and therefore the number of smaller properties coming onto the sales market is decreasing yearly.
THIRTY YEARS AGO As a comparison a property recently came to the market which, nearly 30 years ago, was the first step on the property ladder for one of our team members. Back then it was purchased with an 100% mortgage at a multiple of 3.5 times combined salaries and was only just affordable. The cottage desperately needed a new kitchen and bathroom but there was no spare cash for that at all. Second hand furniture and white goods were all that could be stretched to including a very compact washing machine, an absolute bargain at £2 from auction. At the time, and in our early twenties, the need to be frugal was more of an expectation than hardship.
It’s likely that when our team member moved into that cottage many current firsttime buyers were toddlers. These days a first property purchase is generally made much later in life. No small reason for that delay is increased prices. For example the same mortgage on that cottage would now require combined earnings of nearly £120,000 and is therefore well out of reach of the average under 25 year old!
The upshot is increasing demand for rented property in the area, rising prices and the emergence of large numbers of 30 somethings trying to buy their first homes often with assistance from their, now equity rich, parents. One and two bedroom properties are being fought over and its a vicious circle. As purchase prices increase so more buyers give up on their ownership dream, transfer to renting, thereby increasing rental demand which attracts more investors. SPENDING SHIFT Spending habits have changed and what we can buy has altered dramatically since the 1980’s. For example payments for tech items, tablets, TV services, mobile phones etc simply wasn’t a factor 30 years ago. Now its often deemed essential reducing funds that would otherwise be available to go towards mortgage payments. In any event, as they are older, first time buyers are less keen to scrimp these days. We do feel for those trying to buy their first home. Prices and rents are high, supply is low, and mortgage available income isn't what it used to be.

Winner of the 2011 NODA London Flame Award and since nominated for awards for our sets and performances. We stage two major productions a year at the excellent Adrian Mann Theatre in Ewell, in April and November. We meet Tuesdays and Fridays at 8.15pm in the Elmcroft Community Centre in North Cheam on the Sainsbury’s site.

We have rehearsals and quiz nights and organise theatre outings and social events. We welcome new members willing to actor work backstage in set construction, stage management, sound and lighting. If interested in the opportunities we offer, please call our membership secretary, Joyce Cranfield, on 020 8337 3317. Or simply drop in on one of our evenings for a look. Our next play, ‘The Full Treatment’, stars a couple of centenarians who have been married for 80 years! Discovered by their local paper, their achievement is to be celebrated at a top London hotel. No effort has been spared: the best suite, champagne, photographs and the BBC. But when the lucky couple arrive, things start to go awry. The most unexpected revelations emerge and a fine, insightful and enjoyable comedy results.

Stoneleigh Plumbing Supplies A new arrival on the Broadway As the new owner of 70 Stoneleigh Broadway, I’m hoping that Stoneleigh Plumbing Supplies will be as successful as the company that preceded it. Run by Cyril and Joan Poulton, C P Heating was an established part of the local community for over 25 years and, following in their footsteps, I’m hoping to earn my place by providing excellent service to trade customers and the general public for years to come. Stoneleigh Plumbing Services opened on 1st October 2015 and while it may be my first business, I’m no newcomer to plumbing and bathroom supplies. I trained as a Plumber 16 years ago, having originally spent 20 years in defence electronics. For the last 15 years I’ve been managing a very successful bathroom showroom, before finally deciding to take the plunge and go it alone. New signboards and the name over the door are not the only things that have changed at No 70. The shop is now open all day from 7.30 am Mondays to Fridays and from 8.30 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. Over coming months I will gradually be re-fitting the showroom with
16
some of the latest bathroom ranges and I’ve already introduced new products from leading manufacturers. We aim to suit all budgets and tastes, since I can supply a very wide range of equipment and many of my supplying partners offer innovative solutions and interesting designs, matching great quality with reasonable prices. My ultimate goal is to offer a true ‘one stop shop’ for complete bathroom and heating installation projects. Right now I can offer all the equipment you need and recommend a selection of highly competent, independent bathroom installation specialists, who will provide a first class job at competitive rates. I can also recommend some Gas Safe Engineers for new heating installations or to rectify faulty systems. The website – www.stoneleighplumbingsupplies.co.uk – will give you ideas and a flavour for what’s available and I have plenty of brochures in the showroom for those who prefer to browse in the traditional way. So, whether you’re looking to mend a leaking tap, planning a luxury bathroom or just need salt for your water softener, please come and see me. Ray Hinton

Tax Matters
How to save Capital Gains Tax
By Andrew Khan – Principal Accountant at Tax Affinity Accountants Simply put Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a tax by HMRC on the profit you make when you ‘dispose’ of something of physical presence and value (an asset) eg a rental property, stocks and shares or a piece of art. Eg you sell a buy-to-let property for £300,000. Which you bought it for £200,000. Equals a capital gain of £100,000. A lot of people think it is only applicable in the case of a sale but the truth is that according to HMRC it is applicable in other actions too. Such as giving it away as a gift, transferring it to someone else, swapping for something else and getting compensation eg Insurance payment if it is damaged or stolen. Certain types of assets are eligible for capital gains tax while others are not. Your primary residence i.e. your residing home is not eligible for capital gains while a second property is. Some of the things on which you may need to pay Capital Gains Tax on are as follows: • most types of personal possessions that are worth more than £6,000 (not including your car) eg Art or Antiques • any land or property that is not your primary residence i.e. main home • your primary residence could still have to pay CGT in portion or as a whole if you have rented it out, or used it for business purposes • Stocks and Shares that are not in an ISA, NISA or a PEP • Business related assets that you sell But please note that depending on the actual type of asset, you may be able to reduce any capital gains tax due by claiming tax relief’s that are available on that item. There are many different types of reliefs and it usually best to visit a reputable accountant like Tax Affinity Accountants to make sure you take advantage of any relief available to your personal circumstances. To help HMRC has given everyone a tax free allowance after which capital gains tax will apply. Currently this is £11,100 for a Person and £5550 for a Trust for the 2015-16 Tax Year. Eg If your personal gain is £12,000 then deducting your personal allowance of £11,100 from the gain leaves you £900 on which capital gains tax can be charged before the application of relief. If you have any overseas assets then you may still have to pay Capital Gains Tax. There are however special rules if you are a British citizen or UK resident and are not domiciled in the UK whereby you can claim the ‘remittance basis’.
If you living abroad then unfortunately you still have to pay tax on any gain you make on a residential property that is in the UK. This is even if you are declared as nonresident to HMRC. But the good news is that you do not have to pay Capital Gains Tax on any other UK assets, eg stocks and shares in UK companies, piece of art and business assets etc unless you return within 5 tax years of the gain. As capital gains tax rates can be either 18% or 28% of the gain depending on your personal income and can be discounted by any relief available to you, the best advice, really is to speak to a good qualified accountant as a they should know about all the tax relief’s that are applicable to reduce your CGT. And they should save you much more money than they charge. At Tax Affinity Accountants we are one of the most recommended experts in Capital Gains Tax, due to our detailed knowledge of tax reliefs available and of the HMRC tax system. Tax Affinity Accountant are experts in all Tax and Accountancy matters. With branches in Worcester Park and Surbiton in the Royal Borough of Kingston, they provide a bespoke service to client’s right across the UK and are considered in the industry to be experts in all types of tax and accounting. View from the City
by Justin Urquhart Stewart
News for Saga Louts I was at the ABTA conference this week and I was fascinated to see just how the travel industry is changing. As a rather cynical consumer I was very encouraged to see how much imagination is now being applied to providing a far more tailored range of holiday services. Personally I was particularly enthusiastic that they were targeting those of my age who were referred to as the ‘Saga Lout’ generation, those in their late fifties and early sixties who were still wanting to behave badly (well only quite badly) whilst still having fun on their holidays. Now don’t get me wrong we will not be trashing the place, but equally we are not going to be rolling around in a squeaky wheelchair. I first heard the term when travelling with some chums on Eurostar and after a long lunch we were in a jolly mood but possibly a bit loud for some - in fact too loud for a young man who even had earphones on, who complained that he could not work as we were making too much noise and were just a bunch of Saga Louts well if the cap fits! I will wear it with pride. Meanwhile back at the ABTA conference, it was fascinating to talk with many of the delegates about how they will manage their futures as the digital age is potentially “disintermediating” (‘bypassing’ in English) them into history. And the answer? Well I was pleased to hear that it was service, and human personal service tailored to the client; avoiding those hideous IVR telephone choice systems, and not using mass market call centres were two areas highlighted. They all agreed that it should be about focusing on being able to offer professional advice and experience for the would-be traveller, tailored to a specific age group. And in the case of the ‘Saga Louts’, they are a group who are quite capable of using online services but they also want to be able to speak to someone - a cry of frustration goes up from many who are infuriated by geeks telling us that it’s all straight forward and just do it all online as it is intuitive. Intuitive - that’s rubbish, it’s just an excuse to not have any instructions. So well done ABTA on steering yourselves into this new digital world in a personalised and tailored manner. The travel industry is not just of great value to our economy, but also important to ensure that we all have that vital ingredient for the success of our finances - confidence. After all if we are feeling confident, we will book a
26
bigger and better holiday: and if we have a good holiday we come back with an air of greater confidence to face the rest of the year. Of course the great growth for this industry is going to be the older baby boomers as they work their way through an increasingly creaky retirement - so they will need us Saga Louts after all.
UK Banks - splitting and ring fencing There’s one thing that is certain, the next financial crisis will not be the same as the last one. However, that should not stop any prudent moves by the appropriately named PRA (Prudential Regulatory Authority) to put in place controls to further strengthen the system to try and prevent any recurrence. Their actions last week in strengthening capital requirement levels were perfectly understandable, but they do have to tread a careful line between discipline and departure. If however, the rules are deemed to be too restrictive then they will act as a disincentive for further investment in UK banks and encourage any new investment to go elsewhere. At the same time we still want to ensure that the new range of challenger banks are allowed and encouraged to bring in new capacity as well as more competition. With this development, the question of splitting banks’ investment banking arms away from the commercial banking areas should also be addressed. The merger of these two quite separate functions should never have been allowed, although I admit there are some areas which could survive in either camp, such as foreign exchange trading. To me history shows us a clear difference between the two and that is primarily a cultural one. One serves its clients primarily; the other serves itself to a greater extent. The Americans passed the Glass Steagall act in 1933 precisely to separate the two activities, after some similar dysfunctional behaviour by the banks of the day. Of course the most recent disasters can be traced back directly to its repeal under President Clinton in 1999, when the head of the Fed, Alan Greenspan said he had been assured by the investment banks that “they would act far more responsibly this time” - and the rest is history, and a painful history at that. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Clubs Glitters - Your Winter Tonic By Ruth Jemmett During these grey winter days, when dead leaves are swirling and noses are sniffling, isn’t it wonderful to turn on the television, and escape into the world of Strictly? The rain may be falling, and the heating bills may be mounting, but for a few magical hours each weekend millions of people escape into a fantasy world filled with spray tans and sequins. They watch those brave souls who strut their stuff on the dance floor, wishing that they could emulate them. Well, fantasize no longer! Some of those dancers you are watching have never ventured into the world of ballroom before, and you too could transform your life by literally putting your best foot forward. On a couple of Friday evenings for most months of the year, Glitters Dance Club in Spring Street, Ewell Village, opens its doors to social dancers of all levels - and you could be one of them! If you are over eighteen, and would like to do Ballroom or Latin Dancing - whether you are a confident dancer or a nervous beginner, come and join us! Glitters does not give lessons - it is purely a social occasion, hosted by a professional D.J., Mr. Wonderful, and seasoned dancers will be happy to encourage nervous people on to the dance floor!

After last year’s dreadful weather caused flooding that damaged the hall, it was completely renovated, and now boasts a new fantastic sprung dance floor, state of the art lighting - and, of course, a glitter ball! For the very reasonable price of £8 you can enjoy free parking, a bar, a safe and friendly environment - and you don’t always need to bring a partner! There are several dances during the evening where you can simply mix and mingle. (More men are always welcome, as they can be shy about joining. Once with us, they love it!). David Cabot, the organiser, together with sidekicks Shirley and myself, will welcome you to a friendly venue that has a great atmosphere. A full list of the dates of forthcoming dances can be found in the Clubs section at the back of this magazine. Dances start at 8.30 p.m., and finish at ll p.m. At Christmas we have a highly popular ticket- only Dance/Party, which includes a wonderful hot buffet. This year it will be on 18th December. So don’t get glued to that chair. Come and join in a hobby that will improve your health, give you a good social life, and make you forget your cares for a while. Don’t crawl to the doctor asking for a winter pick-me-up. Come dancing! Glitters is the best tonic you can have! Recipe Spiced winter vegetable soup A hearty and warming soup made with seasonal winter root vegetables. Serve with thick slices of warm crusty bread for a filling lunch or supper. Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped, 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed 2 tsp medium curry paste, 300g carrots, 250g swede, 2 large parsnips, - all peeled and diced 1.4 litre vegetable stock Crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps (see tip) and crushed coriander seeds, to garnish 1 Heat the oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry for 6-7 minutes until softened. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then add the diced vegetables and cover and cook gently for 5 minutes.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND HONEST APPROACH AT EVERY STAGE
2 Pour in 900ml of the chicken stock and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Cool for 10 minutes. 3 Puree the soup in a blender or food processor (in batches if necessary) and return to the pan. Stir in another 300ml of the remaining stock and heat through gently. If you prefer a soup with a thinner consistency add the rest of the stock. 4 Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve in warmed bowls garnished with a spoonful of crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps and crushed coriander seeds. TIP To make the parsnip crisps, use a potato peeler to shave long thin strips from one large peeled parsnip. Half fill a large deep frying pan with vegetable oil and heat until a cube of bread dropped in the hot oil browns in 30 seconds. Fry the strips of parsnip in the hot oil for 1-2 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well on kitchen paper.

and tips for magazines and eventually wrote her own book. In 1861, the first instalment of her famous Book of Household Management was published. Community St Raphael’s Seven Days Of Cake Monday 9th - Sunday 15th November The St Raphael’s Seven Days of Cake is the ideal fundraiser for anyone who enjoys drinking tea and eating cake! Between Monday 9th and Sunday 15th November we would love as many of our supporters as possible to hold a tea party to raise money for the hospice. You could do this at home, at work, at your church, at any social group you attend - anywhere you can think of! You don’t have to be tied to an afternoon tea party - you could have a coffee morning, cocktails and cupcakes, or a bake-off competition. Please contact Kerry on 020 8254 2465 or Kerry.thomas@straphaelshospice.org.uk to register your tea party - you will then be sent an information pack containing invitations, recipes (including ones from Councillor Muhammad Sadiq, Mayor of Sutton, and hospice staff and volunteers), posters, tips for your party, and how to send us the money you raise. You can download extra posters here and invitations here. Every party host who raises more than £250 will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a Champagne Afternoon Tea for two people at Hotel du Vin in Wimbledon - thank you to the hotel for their kind donation. So there is even more incentive to get baking! During the week we are running a colouring competition, with some wonderful prizes donated by Flair Plc in Cheam Village. Each cafe running promotions will have copies of the picture to colour or you can download it here. To enter simply take your entry to the cafe you obtained it from (or if you have downloaded it take it to our fundraising office) and pay your £1 entry fee.
44
We are also partnering with local cafes throughout the week who will be offering promotions to customers - please do go along and support them (and have a nice cuppa and cake!). Keep checking this page to see any new promotions added to the list.
All week - Come along to the Orangery cafe in St Raphael’s Hospice and receive a half price coffee when you buy another (more expensive) item. All week - Tasha’s Tearoom (48 High Street, Cheam, SM3 8RW) will be supporting the hospice by donating all staff tips to the hospice as well as 50p from every cream tea. They will also be selling raffle tickets for a grand draw on Wednesday 11th November. The Pantry in Nonsuch Park will also be running promotions for the hospice all week. All week Absolute Abode (76-78 Coombe Lane, Raynes Park, SW20 0AX) will be donating all the takings from their lime and poppyseed cake to the hospice. Monday 9th November - St Raphael’s Seven Days of Cake launch party at TazZa Coffee (188 High Street, Sutton, SM1 1NR). Come along for delicious cake, lovely coffee, and the chance to win great prizes in our raffle! Free entry, from 2.30 - 4.30pm. TazZa will be donating 75p from every cake sold to St Raphael’s. Friday 13th November – Tasty Cafe (696 London Road, North Cheam, SM3 9BY) will be donating 10% of their takings to the hospice. Saturday 14th November - TazZa Coffee (188 High Street, Sutton, SM1 1NR) will be donating 75p from every cake sold to the hospice. Sunday 15th November - anyone bringing along their Seven Days of Cake information pack to the St Raphael’s Christmas Craft Fair (11am - 3pm at the St Bede’s Conference Centre in the grounds of the hospice, entry £1 for adults) will receive a free tea or coffee and slice of cake.

Gardening Autumn Planning and Planting Pippa Greenwood
There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too. If everything is looking a bit glum, why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should still be relatively warm and considerably more moist than it was during summer. It is also a perfect time to shop for plants which you can enjoy at this time of year, giving you the chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which individual tints and hues you find the most attractive. Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites is the sweet gum or Liquidambar but this is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a relatively shallow soil over chalk. You should also try to choose a relatively sheltered site for plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding the most windswept areas where strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of its autumnal shades. The ultimate choice of plants will be largely determined by the conditions in and the size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which can grow to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn. Some viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and for bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although they prefer an acid soil. The numerous maples, particularly the Japanese maples, not only bring vibrant colours into your garden during autumn but being relatively small or very slow growing
46
are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautiful leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Beni-Shidare’. Whatever you choose it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was whilst in the compost. Always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, to help them get well established so you can enjoy them for years to come. *Make vegetable growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your vegetable plants from www. pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May; what makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week with lots of tips and help about what you’re growing, ensuring great results. It is great value and various pack sizes are available, e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29.00, plus that weekly advice. Gifts Cards are also available.

Safer Neighbourhoods Unexpected Callers There have been a number of incidents recently where criminals have been knocking on doors and conning their way into vulnerable people’s homes saying they are from a utility company eg: Water, Electricity or Gas board and want to check equipment. Genuine Utility companies will seldom call at your address without an appointment, other than to read a meter and they should always present their ID. So what do you do? How do you deal with unknown and unexpected callers including rogue builders? Our advice is: ‘If in doubt, keep them out’. Here’s a three step action plan for when/if you get a knock at your door: 1. STOP…. Are you expecting anyone? Look through the spy hole or window to see who it is. Only allow those people into your home who you know or expect, regardless of what excuses they give you in order to enter. 2. CHAIN…. Before you answer the door, put the chain or bar on first. 3. CHECK…. Always request and check identification. Most genuine callers won’t mind waiting while you check the phone book and call the company they say they are from. If you are suspicious of any callers then keep them shut out and call police on 999. In The Street Be aware of what and who is around you and keep your possessions safe - Never leave your bags or other valuables unattended in public places. - Be discreet with your belongings; displaying expensive jewellery or electronic devices, like mobile phones or cameras, could attract unwanted attention. - If people talk to you or ask unusual questions, be aware of where your possessions are. The dipper or pick-pocket will tend to operate in and around busy stores including charity shops. They certainly operate in the street and they may even target people on a busy bus. Cash points are also often a target, in fact anywhere where your attention may be drawn elsewhere. The thieves sometimes work in pairs, even working in what seem like a family unit, employing clever distraction tactics. Ladies, if you wear your handbag over your shoulder, you could try wearing it under your coat and/ or to the front of your body, making sure that the zip or fastener is always closed. Never leave your bag in or hanging from a shopping trolley. Another good idea is getting some small round ‘Cat Bell’s’ from the pet shop and attach them to the zips of your bags, then should someone try to interfere with your belongings you will be alerted by the jangle of the bell. Always be alert when using a cash point. Again, make sure your bag is in front
48
of you, closed and attached to your person. Be aware of those around you and of course always shield your transaction from prying eyes. If you are taking refreshment in a café or restaurant, never leave your bag on the floor or under your chair. Keep it close to you where you can see it. Try and keep the cash you carry to a minimum by using your cards for as many of your transactions as possible. The majority of these thieves want cash, they will watch you withdraw it and pick their moment later to take it. Stolen cards can be stopped and replaced quite quickly. A large amount of cash is lost. All of the above tips will not guarantee the safety of all your possessions, but it WILL make you and your personal belongings a far more difficult and unattractive target. Take care of yourselves and watch out for your fellow shoppers. If you want to chat to members of your local police team about crime prevention or anything else we will be at these locations in November: Worcester Park Police Office (Drop-in-Surgery) Friday 6th - 3pm till 4pm Church Hill Road shops (Street Briefing) Thursday 12th 3pm till 3.30pm Outside Dorchester Road Primary School (Street Briefing) Wednesday 18th - 3pm till 3.30pm COSTA London Road North Cheam (Cuppa with a Copper) Wednesday 25th - 4pm till 5pm Take care and thank you PCSO Gary Weaving

Baking Snickerdoodles These classic American cookies are crisp at the edges, chewy in the middle and have a delicious cinnamon sugar coating. Try them warm from the oven with a milkshake or hot chocolate – and if you need an excuse, America is celebrating Thanksgiving this month! Makes 16 Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling 115g unsalted butter, softened, 100g dark muscovado sugar, 2 tbsp maple syrup, 175g selfraising flour, 1½ tbsp granulated sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. 2 Place the butter and muscovado sugar in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until creamed. Beat in the maple syrup. Sift over the
flour and beat in with the wooden spoon to form a rough dough. 3 Mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon on a flat plate. Divide and shape the dough into about16 walnut-sized balls (keep them roughly shaped – not smooth) and roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar. Place, well spaced, on the prepared baking sheets. Flatten each ball of mixture slightly with your fingertips. 4 Bake in the preheated oven for 13-14 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar over the cookies. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool. TIP Add some chopped pecans or toasted chopped hazelnuts to the cookie dough for a crunchy texture, or top with white or dark chocolate chips just before baking.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams Heaps of Wildlife When thinking about garden beauties, few people would think of compost heaps and wood piles, would they? But I love them for the teeming life within them and the wonderful way that these living organisms turn what we consider rubbish into a marvellous growing medium the soil. At Shadbolt Park we have 2 large heaps, created specially for their benefit to wildlife, and one of my greatest pleasures when working there is building these heaps. All the dead wood and everything we chop down goes onto these. We keep them at the back of the pond area, near the fence, tucked away where few people disturb them. They are a wonderful refuge over the colder months for the frogs and toads which emerge from our pond, and an invaluable source of invertebrate food for many creatures, including amphibians, birds, hedgehogs and foxes. We have no badgers in the park, but badgers eat a lot of earthworms - very useful little creatures who love to live in compost heaps.
The common earthworm, sometimes called a ‘night crawler’ because of emerging to feed at night and staying below ground during the day, is a garden ‘engineer’. As a worm burrows through the soil it consumes nutrients from decomposing vegetable matter (leaves, roots etc) and enriches the soil via its waste as it works its way through its burrows underground. The tunnels a worm makes aerate the ground. Worms normally stay near the surface but sometimes burrow down as deep as 2 metres. They typically reach a length of about 7 or 8 inches but some 14 inch monsters have been recorded! A worm’s body is made up of ring-like segments called annuli and is covered in small bristles (setae) which the worm uses to move and burrow. Worms are hermaphrodite and mate on the surface. After mating, each worm forms a tiny, lemon-shaped cocoon out of a liquid secreted from its clitellum, which is the bulge you can see near the first third of its body. The egg and sperm cells are deposited in the cocoon and buried. Tiny, fully formed worms emerge 2 to 4 weeks later. Whenever I go to my composting area at the end of my garden, a robin usually follows me - there is always a chance I will do something that will make getting a tasty worm snack very easy for him!

So, let’s end with a comic poem I found on Mr R’s Science site: Earthworm Poem. This poem is slimy, And twisty and squirmy, It tells the tall-tale, Of pleasant earth-wormy, Who lived underground, Munching old leaves, And turning them into, Soil and trees.
He might be muck-yucky, But the soil he makes, Makes all of us lucky! I’ll protect mister earthworm! With all that I’m worth, We need slimy earthworms They’re good for the earth!’
FREE QUOTATIONS References available on request
One day a blue-birdy, Was out for a snacky, And saw the earthworm, What happened was wacky! . Bird flew for the worm, To eat it for lunch, But little girl Lucy, Stepped out with a crunch, ‘Leave worm alone!

factory workers and mothers. Taking the audience on a journey from the innocence of 1914 to the terrifying implications of Haig’s ‘backs to the wall’ order of 1918, we see war at its most brutal, ironic and poignant.
Women In The First World War Created in the centenary year of the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary From Flanders Fields makes a new contribution to the reawakening of interest in the First World War and its consequences for so many people. The commemorative revue has toured the UK and was performed in the West End’s Jermyn Street Theatre and comes to the Epsom Playhouse on Tuesday 10 November for a matinee performance at 1.30pm. Entertaining, provocative and full of surprises, the show has a special focus on the way women were changed by and involved in the war. Their lives are commemorated in words and songs, familiar and unfamiliar. American Broadway rubs shoulders with English stiff upper lip; Victorian sentimentality meets ragtime. Poems and letters give us an insight into the experience of war for soldiers, nurses, entertainers,
Katapult Theatre Company are able to bring It’s a Long, Long way to Tipperary From Flanders’ Fields to appropriate venues as part of their continuing tour of the South East and beyond. The company was formed in 2010 by a group of Kent based professional actors with the aim of bringing new and original work to audiences across the county and beyond. The piece is just under two hours long with an interval and is sure to appeal to audiences of all ages.
