October already – at the time of writing it feels like the children have only just gone back to school, and here we are looking forward to half term already. The Indian summer that we longed for never quite happened but I do love autumn and the glorious colours it brings – particularly when the sun shines! Having spent most of my life in Glasgow, and regularly communicating with family and friends, there I really do appreciate the climate ‘down here’. Rain tends to be occasional as opposed to constant and my tenement flat was probably only without the heating on for maybe 2 months of the year (much to the delight of the neighbour with no heating upstairs). So, when we get our autumn showers I try not to complain, instead rejoice that it doesn’t happen EVERY day! Have a great month and remember to get in touch if you have anything to say about local clubs and organisations. And, if you’re a local business then why not look at advertising in next month’s edition – if you’re reading this, then so are your potential customers. Enjoy!

Many readers will be aware that Canon Cornelius Beausang, Parish Priest at St Matthias’ Catholic Church from 1961 to 1998, died on 27 August, at the age of 90. I thought it would be appropriate to mark the occasion with a look at the history of St Matthias’.

Remembering the ministry of Canon Beausang by David Rymill the Diocese of Southwark. Originally the parish covered a large area. The Revd Bernard Smoker, Parish Priest from 1937 to 1942, opened a new hall in Ewell, later St. Clement’s, and the school of St. Cecilia in the London Road. There were Sunday services at Brinkley Road, the Ewell hall, St. Cecilia’s, and the school at Malden Manor. He also perceived the need for improved facilities in Worcester Park: a site in Cheam Common Road was selected for a new church; a hall and presbytery were built alongside. The Revd Laurence Duprez became Parish Priest in 1946. In 1961 the parish was divided: he took responsibility for the new parish of St. Cecilia, and the Revd Cornelius Beausang was appointed to St. Matthias’.

The first Roman Catholic Church in Worcester Park was a simple brick structure in Brinkley Road, built in 1906 to a design by B Williamson and later extended to provide 250 seats. It was established by the Convent of the Daughters of the Cross which had opened St. Anthony’s Hospital in the London Road in 1904.The Revd Bernard Kelly combined the roles of parish priest and chaplain to St. Anthony’s, and the church’s construction was financed by Frances Ellis, a benefactress of the Catholic Church. Miss Ellis came from Ramsgate, and her connection with the Daughters of the Cross began through their Sanatorium in Margate. Between 1903 and 1930 she helped the order to purchase a number of houses for their work in health care and education, as well as financing the building of a number of churches in

Remembering the ministry of Canon Beausang by David Rymill plans for a new church, but as development was needed elsewhere, the new church had to be put on the long finger.” By 1961, however, with around 800 or 900 attending services in Brinkley Road, a new church was required. The designs were drawn up by Tonei and Maxwell, but the original inspiration came from a church which Canon Beausang saw in Ballyphehane in his native Cork “which I liked very much, because I liked the proportion of it; it was Romanesque in style.” Certain changes were made to this design, including the substitution of transepts for side aisles, and an alteration to the shape of the window over the main door, which at St. Matthias’ shows the Blessed Virgin Mary as depicted in the statue at Lourdes. “The idea was that when you came into the church the thing that would stand out was the great crucifix over the altar which represents the crucified, risen Christ, who is both Priest and King; and then below that is the small altar where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved.” Whilst the church was being planned and built, the Second Vatican Council was engaged in the discussions that would bring many changes to Catholic liturgical practices. As a result the designs were altered so that the priest could say Mass facing the people, in line with the revised practice.

a large congregation; photographs of this occasion, together with much more information about the history of St Matthias’ and current events there, can be seen on the parish website at www. saintmatthias.co.uk The Church was full again for the occasion of Canon Beausang’s Requiem Mass in September 2011; about 45 priests, two bishops and the Archbishop were present. He was subsequently interred in his native County Cork.

Our colour illustration this month shows the back of St Matthias’ Church and the old parish hall, from The Retreat, shortly before work began on the construction of the new Parish Centre. The black and white view shows the appearance of this part of Cheam Common Road around the dawn of the early 20th century: the photographer must have been standing close to the site of Christ Church with St Philip, and the houses on the right were on the site now occupied by Griffiths Close. The tall tree near the centre of the picture would have been close to the site of St Matthias’. WPLife

It is well worth stepping inside to appreciate the spacious cruciform church. Notice the stained glass windows in the transepts, that on the left showing St. Matthias taking hold of the blade of a sword, symbolising his acceptance of martyrdom, and that on the right containing “a motif of the Blessed Eucharist, the host and the chalice, and underneath written ‘He would give them the uttermost proof of his love’, John’s words describing the gift of the Eucharist by our Blessed Lord on the Holy Thursday night.” When the new church was ready, Canon Beausang brought the reserved Sacrament from Brinkley Road before saying Mass for the first time in the new building. The church was taken into use in June 1965. It was officially opened by Archbishop Cowderoy in the following February, and consecrated by Bishop Henderson in 1977. In 2006 the parish celebrated its centenary with a Mass on 8 October at which Archbishop Kevin McDonald blessed the new St Matthias Parish Centre, witnessed by

The choice is ours: back to basics or back to the jungle

ruth jemmett

by Ruth Jemmett

The riots that blighted our once green and pleasant land a few weeks ago highlighted the fact that something needs to be done urgently to re-write the rule book regarding childrearing. In former times young people received guidance from parents, religious leaders or teachers as to what was acceptable behaviour in a civilised society. In modern Britain, one in five families are headed by single mothers, religion is getting an increasingly bad name due to extremist views by a vocal minority and the teaching profession seems to be besieged by undisciplined children who shout “You can’t touch me! I know my rights!” the moment anyone in authority dares to question their wild behaviour.

VillageWorcester Voice Park Life for OTHER people’s children!

The church, that was once a force for good and self-discipline, now bows its head in shame as it bends its once rigid rules to humour the trendy few. People of all ages have lost track of what is right or wrong, and when great public wrongs are perpetrated and publicised by the media, how often do religious leaders speak up and condemn such happenings? Church attendances are dwindling, and the revelation of child abuse cases involving clerics over the past few years have done little to promote confidence in what used to form the bedrock of our society. We now live in a sad world where older people lock themselves securely in their homes at twilight for fear of being burgled - or worse. Simple shopping trips can be made a frightening experience for the elderly as they are confronted by aimless young men gathering in groups on street corners. Sociologists tell us that when the family framework breaks down children will often create an alternative family out of a gang - hence our current problems. Parents from ordinary families increasingly make countless car-runs to collect even quite grown-up children from schools and clubs, such is their fear that

So how can we stop the rot and get our children back on track? The Jesuits had the saying “Give me the child and I will show you the man”. More and more we accept this situation as normal instead of stepping back and saying “Whoa! Enough is enough!” Human experience over the centuries has taught us that young males need a firmer hand than females, and we cannot expect our young - of either sex - to mature into responsible adults if we don’t take the time and trouble to guide naturally wild instincts into social patterns that make it possible for us to live together peaceably. The media promote violence and pornography on a daily basis and yet we seem to be astonished when little Johnny takes an axe to his little sister. Human beings, for all their intelligence, are a form of trained animal. Children quite simply imitate what they see around them. We cannot blame them for all that they do, as many of the people languishing in young offenders’ institutions or prisons have never been taught the most basic life skills. You get out of a society what you put into it. The most important product we have in our world is our children. Until we start to value parenting skills and make it a

compulsory subject at school from an early age we will continue to breed more generations of feckless rampaging youths who have probably never been read a bed-time story or who know what love is about. The traditional nuclear family now only forms 15% of our population, and however much the trendies encourage the breakdown of traditional values, surely even they have to admit that we are heading along an ugly path at the moment. Until we, as a country and a world, begin to have the courage to reverse the trend , we will surely deserve the chaos into which we seem to be degenerating. If we don’t go back to basics and do an urgent re-think on child-rearing, we will revert to the jungle from which we came. Copyright of Ruth Jemmett Member of The Society of Authors WPLife

A Vickers Validation? by Justin Urquhart Stewart

view from the city

The pressure welled up further this last week over the fear of another credit crunch. Each day seemed to increase the expectation for a final eruption from Stromboli to tear apart the increasingly nervous and fragile Eurozone banking system. This financial charade seemed to be being played out as the politicians were seen to be continuing to dither about taking decisive decisions, with accusations being lobbed around the world with a howitzer of hyperbole coming in from China and the US. Finally we heard of the combined intervention from five central banks and at last it seems that we could be seeing some significant action to try and at least ease the pressure for the time being and give further confidence to some of the most worried banks under pressure. This however buys time – just a few months, but vital time for nerves about the banks to calm down and ease the liquidity situation and prevent a further cramping of inter-bank finance. It does not in itself though resolve the underlying issues of currency management and confidence.

is simplistic but the cultural differences frankly have been clear for all to see. Such a division though would never have prevented the last crisis, as of course we can see where the commercial banks with their ‘service’ frankly failed abysmally with bad loans by bad bankers and inexperienced regulators. As examples we just have to look at HBOS – virtually running a form of high risk private equity commercial banking system and the failure of the Northern Rock mortgage regime. However the UBS trading loss serves to remind us of the trading risks. As ever it is easy to blame the primary culprit of course, but it must also be the failure of disciplines, controls and culture within the business that allows such disasters to occur. WPLife

A few days on from the publication of the Vickers report, you cannot have had a better justification for ring-fencing of commercial and investment banks than the UBS trading losses. The report itself did not seem to identify a key issue that has always been my concern – that of culture. Having worked in both, I see a fundamental difference between the two;the commercial bank (or clearing bank) as a service bank designed to service their clients. The investment bank essentially focused on primarily serving itself. Obviously the division

Interview with Christine Wicks – Girlguiding County Commissioner for Greater London

What area does Greater London West cover and how many members does this include? The County covers the four boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Richmond and Sutton (which includes Worcester Park) and currently the membership is over 6000. This role obviously means you are involved with girls and leaders throughout this area but do you have an active role in Worcester Park? Yes, my Commissioner role is a 7 year appointment but I have still continued my role as Brownie Leader (Brown Owl) with the 8th Worcester Park Brownie Pack which meets at Christ Church with St Philip. I understand you have just been presented with a 40 year long service award – have you always been involved in Worcester Park? No, I initially worked with Brownies in Clapham Park where I used to live. I was a Brownie, Guide and Ranger in Clapham and when they were desperate for leaders I volunteered to run a Brownie Pack in St Bede’s Church Clapham. I was also an assistant Cub Scout Leader with the 18th Clapham St Paul’s Group at that time too. When I married and moved to Morden, I continued as

Yes, 2010 was our Centenary and in GLW we had a whole year of activities and celebrations actually starting in September 2009 with an extravagant Launch Party at our County campsite Heyswood with over 2500 attending. This was followed by several Region and national events in which all sections of Girlguiding were involved – ‘Rainbows Go Wild’ was an event held at various zoos,‘Funtenary’ was a weekend when Brownies took over Butlins at Bognor, ‘Brownies take over the tracks’ was another Brownie steam train adventure, ‘One world, one beat’ was for everyone providing a weekend of cultural and artistic activities, ‘Capital Jig’ was for Guides where girls travelled to one of 5 capitals (London, Prague, Paris, Copenhagen and Edinburgh) to carry out activities and to join by satellite link up for a final session … and so many other things. The Centenary year culminated in a Vision Finale at 20:10 20/10 2010 with a firework spectacular, when members all around the UK joined via satellite link with our Chief Guide to

Worcester Park Life renew our promise and to look to the future. And your favourite moment? During the year, every member was challenged to have at least one ‘Mountain Top Moment’ and I think mine was being one of the hosts at the Girlguiding Show Garden at last year’s Hampton Court Flower Show. As well as the wonderful display which won a silver gilt award we were voted winner of the People’s choice, I was able to speak to so many people to tell them all about Guiding and often to share their memories of their involvement. And after the Centenary has it all gone flat? Most definitely not – we have maintained the momentum this year with a number of activities including a recent Brownie Revels day at our County campsite Heyswood. We are also busy designing and building our float for the Lord Mayor’s Show in November where we will join the parade with our theme of 10 million girls around the world – our current world membership figure. We have a Lord Mayor’s challenge and badge for everyone to gain and everyone has an opportunity to have a ‘hand’ in the final design – watch out for us on TV! Have you enjoyed your term as County Commissioner? When selected, it was surprised to start with but I hope that I have brought something to the role, provided some new ideas and hope to leave the County in an even better position than when I took over. We have grown in numbers in every section

To advertise call 020 8 336 2915 over the last year – a sign that we must be doing something right. I have also had a great team of Division Commissioners and supporters which has made my role so much more rewarding and enjoyable. My term as County Commissioner comes to an end next summer when I’ll revert to just being Brown Owl and enjoying our activities with the girls . Any last messages? I would like to publicly thank all the leaders and commissioners who give their time freely and unpaid – we are all volunteers - to provide opportunities for the girls. Despite our numbers in all sections increasing during the last year, we still have almost 500 girls within the County who would join if we had more volunteers and therefore more places available there are rewarding jobs for anyone with whatever time they can spare. We provide support and training for leaders aged 18 and 65 who can enjoy seeing the benefits and opportunities they can give to the girls and they too can have fun. Where has all the wildlife gone?

Worcester Village Voice Park Life voice for

by Carol Williams

From “Waitrose weekend” 1 Sept 2011 I lift the following, which was so heartening to read:‘Animal and plant-friendly approach on dairy farms helps birds on RSPB’s list of species in decline’ The article then goes on to cite dramatic increases in yellowhammers, corn buntings , spotted flycatchers, skylark and songthrush - all birds whose numbers have plummeted alarmingly in recent years. Hares, rare orchid species and 42 of the 67 butterfly species have also been sighted on Waitrose Wildcare farms. If all farms - not just those supplying Waitrose with dairy produce - were to have some sort of ‘wildcare’ scheme, our countryside could be transformed. And

18

wildlife

if, in addition, we had many wildlife corners in our suburbs, there would be a good chance of reversing the decline of a great many of our native species.

The area to the back and sides of the pond railings in Shadbolt Park is being left to Nature as much as possible. This is to enable plants to set seed and complete their life cycle. Cover for tiny amphibians leaving the water is just one of many benefits our small patch of wild offers, but every plant, at every stage of its life, will increase the biodiversity of the area. Bramble flowers provide nectar for many insects and their berries are food for birds in Autumn. To those tempted to view our ‘jungle’ negatively I would suggest a stroll through it with a wildflower book to see how many species you can spot. Just in this first year there have been an amazing variety,

which we’ve added to in places with wildlfower plugs bought from Habitat Aid (which donates 10% of its profits of butterfly conservation). Next year will be even better, as the seeds scatter about. Monty Don says “Thistles are beautiful and dramatic, and every garden should have them”. We have several in our wilderness patch - they are a favourite nectar source for 4 species of fritilliary butterfly and their seeds are loved by goldfinches. (Pliny and medieval writers thought thistles could return hair to bald heads!!!) My sons recently saw bats in the park just before the gates were locked. Most likely these were pipstrelles, whose calls we detected there last Summer, before the pond was restored. At that time we also recorded noctule, leisler’s and serotine bats flying over, so I hope numbers of these have increased now the habitat has improved. Noctules are our largest bat species and fly at great heights.

What plants may arrive in our wilderness next year, carried in as seed on the wind or birds’ feet? There is a story about Charles Darwin who detached soil from the leg of a dead partridge and then identified 82 plants which grew from the seeds it contained! Can you even name that many wild plants, never mind recognise them? Good wildlife habitat also includes piles of dead wood and leaves, and compost heaps, so we have these also - towards the back near the fence. Anybody who wants to help with the Shadbolt Park wildlife project please do come along on Wednesday or Saturday mornings at 10.30 and spend a half hour pottering with us. ( The day lily garden behind the surgery is open every Saturday morning between 10 and 12 am also - more volunteers always needed!) WPLife

Square dancing comes to Surrey by Granville Spencer

There are Square Dance clubs throughout England (Scotland and Wales) with at least one, and often a number, of clubs in just about every county except Surrey. Up until now that is as a brand new club is opening soon on our doorstep in Stoneleigh. This is because Granville Spencer, a Square Dance caller, has recently moved here and lives in the Worcester Park area and is keen to set up a new section appropriately to be called Surrey Squares! Square dancing involves teamwork as it takes 8 people to make up a square and the Caller leads the dancers through the movements carefully making sure everybody understands. The great thing is that there are no long dance routines to learn – just the individual moves. The more moves you learn the more interesting it gets and the more fun everyone has - and of course the greatest fun is had when things go a bit wrong!

You needn’t worry about having two left feet – anybody can Square Dance as the movements are very simple and rhythmical – the hardest thing is knowing your left from your right – which is not as easy as it may seem! Men are often reticent about attending but usually find they enjoy this style of dancing as they appreciate the variety of formations and in fact often become the more enthusiastic dancers.

Square dancing is great fun for couples, singles and families and provides an interactive social evening. It combines physical and mental stimulation for people of all ages and provides a “well being” effect as you join in with other people and make new friends. All the moves are easy to learn with everybody helping each other along the way – it is often called fun and friendship set to music. This music being drawn from a wide range of tastes including new and classic pop, jazz, country and western, rock and roll etc. Square dancing is truly international as it is danced throughout the world, using the exact same moves, and

Choosing trees for your garden by Roger Kerr This article will focus on tips and advice in selecting small trees for your garden, next month we will look at planting tips. The factors to consider in choosing a suitable tree can be divided into 2 broad categories, firstly the environmental conditions and secondly the tree characteristics. Environmental Conditions Different trees favour particular environments to enable optimal growth and a healthy full canopy for you to enjoy. Firstly the soil condition needs to assessed, the ideal soil for most trees needs to be a well balanced mix of clay and sand that drains well but can retain moisture. The soil texture can be changed with the use of organic matter such as composted manure with coarse sand or clay to alter drainage characteristics. Whether the soil is acid or alkaline also determines tree species you can grow; a pH test kit can easily be purchased to assess your soil. For acid soils adding

VillageWorcester Voice Park Life

gardening

lime can reduce the acidity but will need renewal over the years to ensure the artificial change is maintained. I suggest that in most cases it is best to work with the natural acidity of your garden in choosing a tree. Secondly you need to look at the shade conditions in selecting a tree; many species thrive in direct sunlight where this position encourages growth and in some cases enhances variegated foliage colours through the year. Where trees are grown in shady locations quite often the foliage has less variation and interest for you. If you would like to plant a tree to create a shady area then the tree may need space to develop a breadth rather than height. Armed with your knowledge of soil and light conditions you can now proceed to the garden centre to consider the tree characteristics. Tree Characteristics Trees come in all shapes and sizes as well as deciduous and evergreen forms, so quite often the choices can feel a little daunting. Take your time in selecting your tree, here are some guiding questions to have in mind as you deliberate:1. Do you want the tree as a screen or a specimen feature? Evergreens produce an all year round screen but a mixed

tree screen provides interest through the seasons, specimen trees can be a real feature in your garden drawing eyes to particular locations. 2. What shape of tree would you like? The broad range of tree shapes extend from columnar to rounded, conical and weeping forms. It is always a good idea to look at a prospective tree and think ahead to the size it will achieve at maturity. For example, a columnar tree often suits small garden spaces as a focus point whereas weeping trees often have a wider very ornamental attractive form. 3. Does the tree integrate into the rest of the garden? Some trees integrate better with particular garden layouts which can vary from for example a Japanese style to heathers/low level borders or shrubs and fruit tree styles; even a garden laid to mainly lawn should favour particular trees. 4. Do you have specific tree features you favour? These factors include preferences for foliage colours in autumn, spring blossom colours, yielding fruits in late summer or interesting bark colours and textures. These tips should help you in deciding how to select the ideal tree for your garden, we always advise customers to take plenty of time in this decision making process, planting a tree is a long term committment. Professional teacher and dancer Caroline Butler, a Worcester Park local, has recently opened a dance school “Kids Love Dance” in the beautiful new development of the “Hamptons”. Caroline has over a decade of dancing and teaching experience and has taught in the United States as well as all over the U.K. She currently splits her time between teaching at Hurst Lodge in Ascot, English National Ballet Junior School and Kids Love Dance.

Caroline Butler ARAD RTS

What inspired you to start dancing? I was inspired to start dancing when I was young, whilst taking Gymnastics of all things. We had to take a supplemental ballet class as part of the training and I found that I was looking forward to that class more so than anything else. So, a late starter at 12 years old, I began what was to turn into my life’s work and passion. At about the same time my mother took me to see the Kirov Ballet and I thought the dancers on stage were magnificent, I longed to be able to dance with them, either in class or on stage; it made no difference to me, I just knew I had to dance. Where did you 1st get the opportunity to train professionally? I auditioned and was accepted by several top ballet schools when I was 16 but finally decided to take a place at Rambert School of Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance to train to be a ballet dancer. I later took a brief hiatus and travelled to the states where I married and lived for 5 years. However the dance world continued to beckon me; I began dancing with the Vail Youth Ballet Company in Colorado and became a teacher and choreographer for the company and affiliate school. I worked with professional international performers and teaching staff which inspired me to make teaching my full time profession. Since moving back to the U.K. in 2006 I have completed several teaching and dancing certificates including gaining my Associates with the Royal Academy of Dance. What would you like to create with Kids Love Dance? I intend to create a school that trains thoughtful dancers that can “think on their feet” so to speak. A school that will encourage confidence and creativity in children whether they intend to carry on making dance a life’s passion or use the very transferable skills that they learn in my classes in other aspects of their lives. At Kids Love Dance we focus on the child and the 3 P’s: Play- Essential in every child’s learning giving them the tools of cooperation and creativity. Perfect- Encouraging To advertise in

Bubble Bubble Toil and Trouble by Aret Kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin

Perhaps I am being presumptious, but it seems to me that there is nothing that puts a smile on your face, makes an event an event or says ‘you’re special’, more than a lovely bottle of bubbly! Of course there is the exception to the rule, but when you’re stuck for that gift, be it happy birthday, congratulations, or even “I’m sorry”, you can’t go wrong with a bottle of something sparkling. Now, I am not suggesting that only Champagne will do, far from it, in fact I am on a mission to try every kind of fizz there is, but you have to begin at the beginning don’t you? Champagne! The very word is synonymous with celebration and wealth, but it is in fact French monks who are credited as the first to bottle a sparkling form of wine named after

the ChampagneArdenne region of France. The Benedictine monk Dom Pierre Perignon, whilst he did not invent Champagne, is considered to be a key figure in the history of Champagne (by managing to keep the fizz in the bottle!) and is reported to have said, “Come quickly, I am drinking the stars!” on tasting his first sip of Champagne! As a general rule, the grapes used must be Chardonnay, or the dark-skinned “red wine grapes” Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier. The grapes are pressed gently and the absence of the skin contact during fermentation, allows the dark skinned grapes to create a white wine. Between 1645 and 1742, the French monks’ method of applying the second fermentation process, which passed in the bottle, created the CO2 bubbles which are the sparkle of Champagne. Whilst Champagne is produced exclusively within the eponymous Champagne region Northeast of Paris, this is of course not the only place that this calibre of sparkling wine is produced. In parts of the Sussex Downs, vines are grown in exactly the same chalk subsoil as in Champagne, using the same production, grape varieties, ageing process and similar pricing and yet however good, it can still only be “sparkling wine” (you can serve it to your discerning French friends

but don’t show them the label till afterwords!). The Brits did however make a significant contribution to Champagne, by inventing a bottle strong enough to withstand the pressure of the bubbles. It may have the name, but there are other sparkling contenders and many of them are far more reasonably priced. In fact, if you find Champagne too dry or too acidic, but still want to indulge in some bubbles, then these next candidates are for you. Spanish Cava and Italian Prosecco, will tend to be softer and sweeter, as will sparkling wines from the New World which invariably offer a fuller and fruitier fizz, great examples of which can all be bought for under £10. Two or even three bottles of fizz for a price of one bottle of Champagne! Surely that’s a bargain? And yet, I hate to say it, but I don’t think anything can beat it! Some, who shall remain nameless, have even suggested that this is because I am a girl (after all it’s sparkling and comes in pink!) but I think it’s more than that. After all, Champagne is legendary and iconic, the king of wines, the wine of kings and the toast of a thousand hosts! I think that Lily Bollinger put it best when she said: “I only drink Champagne when I am happy... and when I am sad. Sometimes I drink it when I am alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I am thirsty”.

recipe

Cherry Fudge

This home-made fudge is a delicious sweet treat that kids will love and is great for a Hallowe’en treat. You can replace the cherries with raisins, chopped stem ginger or chopped nuts.

450g (1lb) granulated sugar 75g (3oz) butter 150ml (¼pt) milk 170g can evaporated milk 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 100g (4oz) glace cherries, chopped Makes approx 550g (1¼lb) Place the sugar in a large heavy-based pan with the butter, milk and evaporated milk. Heat gently, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the mixture to the boil, without stirring, and continue to boil until the mixture reaches 116C/240F on a sugar thermometer (see tip). Stir the boiling mixture occasionally to prevent

it from sticking. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla essence and chopped glace cherries. Beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture is stiff, grainy and paler in

colour. Quickly pour the mixture into a greased 18cm (7in) square shallow cake tin. Leave until almost set then mark into squares. When completely cold, cut or break into the squares. Store the fudge in an airtight container.

TOP TIP - If you don’t have a sugar thermometer, place a jug of very cold water by the hob. After boiling the fudge mixture for about 5 minutes, drop a teaspoonful of the hot syrup into the water. If the syrup forms a ball which you can roll between your fingers then its ready – if not, boil for a further few minutes then test again. WPLife

Safer neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving

You may remember around a year and a half ago I wrote informing you of a service called ‘Community Safe’, a service that (if you signed up to it) provided you with up to date information about crime and safety issues in your area. This service has been improved and is now called ‘Neighbourhood Link’. This is a great service that we can all benefit from and it will be useful in keeping you updated with current crime and safety issues that are relevant to where you and your neighbours live. It will also contain news and information about policing activity and initiatives and should we be faced with a major incident you will be sent up to date information to help you. You can also register so that you receive alerts relating to where you work. Registering for ‘Neighbourhood Link’ is completely FREE and it couldn’t be easier, just log on to your computer and visit www.neighbourhoodlink.met.police.uk and follow the instructions. Once you have registered you will begin to receive messages in relation to incidents or events Impacting on the Metropolitan Police Area, however, you may not receive messages from your Safer Neighbourhood Team or other local police teams until the service is implemented in your borough. You will usually receive messages via email unless you have specified otherwise. On some occasions it may be appropriate for messages to be sent in other ways such as text message or voicemail. In order to make sure you are getting the most out of this service please do keep your details up to date, you can amend your details at any time. As part of the registration process you will be asked for some personal information including your contact details as well as the subject areas you are interested in. The information you provide will only be used by the Metropolitan Police Service. It will not be passed on to other organisations. The subject areas will include: Safer Neighbourhoods

- Neighbourhood Watch - Business Premises - Crime Statistics and Prevention - London Events - Local Events - Street Briefings - News Stories and lots more. Register TODAY. Also this month I want to take the opportunity to remind you all about the rising trend of Thefts from Motor Vehicles……

The crime we seem to be suffering from mostly at the moment on our wards is theft from Motor Vehicles. I know I am always going on about being vigilant and security conscious, but now, more than ever we have to be aware of so many things. DO NOT leave any valuables in your vehicle. DO NOT leave your vehicle unattended unlocked, or with a window open. DO try to park your vehicle as close to your house as possible, preferably on the drive. Consider leaving your glove box open, so that thieves can see that you have nothing in your car that might interest them. Items often left in cars that are of interest to thieves are: BAGS, WALLETS and PURSES, SAT NAVS, CAMERAS, TOOLS, MOBILE PHONES and DESIGNER SUNGLASSES, in fact anything they can get money for. Thieves have been known to break into a car for just a couple of pound coins left in a tray for car park payments. If you notice anyone suspicious looking into vehicles, or trying the door handles of vehicles in your road, at any time of day and you believe their activity may be unlawful, please call 999 straight away and report it. Better safe than sorry. All the above also applies to your properties. Please keep valuables OUT OF SIGHT. By taking a few simple steps we hope to deter opportunist thieves. Amazing Autumn Colour

gardening

by Pippa Greenwood

Autumn colour has the ability to make me go weak at the knees. I love it....just as the temperatures are dropping and things can become dull and gloomy, your garden develops a new potential – to be positively glowing with fantastic foliage colour. Autumn is a great time to plant trees and shrubs and as the plants are showing their beautiful colours, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting. Plants for vertical surfaces: Vitis coignetiae – a rampant grower, the heartshaped leaves may measure 25-30cm across and their splendid scarlet and crimson colours are un-missable. This vine can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports. Colours are especially good if the soil is miserable or the root run restricted. Parthenocissus quinquefolia - commonly known as the Virginia creeper, it’s another sizeable climber, and this also offers a good degree of self-clinging ability, so it can be used on walls without a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange and red. It can grow tall so may need trimming. Parthenocissus henryana - a relative of the Virginia creeper, but much more restrained. In autumn the leaves turn from a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veining to rich shades of red. Shrubs: Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a gorgeous smallish to medium-sized shrub, covered with scented creamy white spiky flower clusters early in the year, before the leaves appear. The foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Fothergilla needs a lime-free soil. Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as the snowy mespilus or serviceberry, is a large shrub or small tree and produces lovely whitish blossom in spring. The leaves change from a coppery colour to bright green to one huge mass of fiery colours in autumn.

Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn show stoppers, and for smaller gardens you find it hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows. They do well in large tubs, perfect for a sheltered back yard. Cotinus or smoke bush is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves that come in shades of green, pinkish–orange or purple with a bright display in autumn. The fluffy seed heads that are left after flowering look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke. If your garden soil is waterlogged now, then wait a week or more until it is in better condition before planting. If the soil is dry, it will still need watering well, and the soil around the roots will need to be kept moist. Always check the potential height and spread of trees or shrubs you’re considering. Then sit back and enjoy your own bit of autumnal magic! Make veg growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your veg plants from www.pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May at a great time for planting and then Pippa will email you every week about what you’re growing – lots of tips and help, ensuring great results. It’s great value with various pack sizes available, eg up to 66 plants plus 6 packets of seed for just £39.00, plus that weekly advice. WPLife
