Dear Readers As I’m sure you’ll appreciate, there is a lead time between me writing this and you reading it! So today is a sunny Sunday and we’re on day three of the Rugby World Cup (“RWC”). Everyone can be a critic but I really enjoyed the opening ceremony and thought it was a job really well done with what they crammed into a limited time. I have to confess that the girls and I then retired/escaped (post Guides) to the front room to watch ‘Bake Off – Extra Slice’ leaving the rugby fan of the house to watch whoever was playing who. I understand the this RWC is going on for the next six weeks until the end of October. Whilst I might be rugby’s biggest fan nor understand what is going on in the scrum, but, oh my goodness, I was captivated by South Africa V Japan. With so much going on over in Twickenham, it is fair to suggest that most of South West London is going to be severely congested. So why not stay local and make a point of making use of your high street. That is what my husband is doing. Having tried to book a table in a pub or restaurant in Twickenham for one of the match days, he and ten friend are eating locally for their pre match hospitality before venturing over to Twikkers for the Wales England match – he can sleep in the spare room that night…. Aside from the Rugby World New Malden’s sports club are busy with the new seasons. If you’ve been inspired by what you’re watching and young and fit enough to do so, why not get in touch with your local club. Old Wandsworthian are looking for players, see page 60 for more information. Have a great month and remember the clocks go back on the 25th. Best wishes,

Worcester Park History

Under the poplars in the London Road by David Rymill

Following my article in August about the early history of St Anthony’s Hospital, I am continuing along the London Road, on Worcester Park’s north-eastern corner, to the site of Poplar Cottages, now occupied by Unecol House, offices of the Sutton Borough Guardian and related titles, between the hospital and the Lord Nelson. In the first half of the 19th century a row of cottages was built facing the London Road. Behind these were four further cottages, backing onto the high garden wall of North Cheam House (now the site of Cardigan Court). In 1841 the whole group was described as ten cottages, three houses, shops, etc. In the 1861 census returns the cottages facing the London Road appear to be numbered 1-8 Kerrs Row, presumably after Patrick Kerr of Park Farm, while 1-4 Shepherds Cottages may have been the cottages at the back, which were later known as Old Poplar Cottages. Many of the householders were labourers, possibly on Park Farm, but William Shepherd, at 1 Kerrs Row, was a baker and grocer, Walter Line at no. 3 was a police constable, and 1 Shepherds Cottages was the home of Maria Baker, a monthly nurse. Ten years later, most of the occupiers had apparently changed, but Mrs Baker was still listed at what seems to have become Nelson Cottages. At the right-hand end of the row was a general stores projecting a little way forward. At the left-hand end of the terrace there was a post office, which for sixty years from about 1902 was run by the same family. Clare Schofield recalls “My grandparents [John and Mary Ann Clare Jorgenson] together with their baby daughter, my mother, had moved to the post office. My grandmother was evidently a good businesswoman. Until her death in 1930 she lived in the left-hand cottage with the little old shop adjoining. Apart from being a post office the shop sold virtually anything and

6

everything – sewing threads, crochet hooks, boot polish, sweets, stationery etc. I was told that twice a year my grandmother would put on her finery – if it was summer she would take her parasol – and go to a warehouse near St Paul’s to buy her new stock. She would then dine at Frascati’s in Oxford Street – a twice-yearly treat as her normal life was one of hard work, often ill-health and considerable tragedy. The new post office built by my father [in the 1930s] was intended to be the first of a row of shops. It was well designed, with all mod cons, [but] was demolished in the early 1960s. My mother and grandmother had been postmistresses there for 60 years between them.” Mrs Schofield’s own early memories relate to the ‘new’ shop as it was in the 1940s. The fixtures included “a glass cabinet on the counter – an item remaining from the old shop – and it had inscribed on the glass ‘Mazawattee Tea’. Another relic from the earlier premises was a phone box, in the corner. It was reminiscent of a railway carriage in that it had leather-padded sides extending halfway up with glass windows above. The door was similarly padded with a window above and this could be opened using a leather strap.” Mrs Schofield also recalls that the cottages were named after “two huge poplar trees which stood in front of the post office. An enamelled sign on one of the trees announced ‘Poplar Tea Gardens’, as … there was a beautiful garden behind the post office and the next door cottage, where all summer long

cream teas were served. It was a popular stoppingoff place and well-known for its delicious home made ice-cream. Further behind the gardens and cottages in the area where maisonettes now stand and fronting onto Trafalgar Avenue, were several large greenhouses where my grandfather grew flowers for sale at Covent Garden.” He “came from a large dairy farm in Denmark. It had been decided that his brother would stay on the farm, but my grandfather would learn to be a nurseryman; he spent time in a nursery in Hamburg, then the Tuileries in Paris, and finally Cheshunt where he met my grandmother.” “The four cottages built onto the North Cheam House wall were double-fronted in two pairs; I think there was a wash house for each pair, with a deep stone sink with a fire under it. From my earliest memories the four cottages were already ruins. The nearest one was still vaguely habitable as my father used it as a workroom where he did carpentry. My friends and I played in the tumbledown wash house, equipping it with discarded bits of furniture.”

The cottages in the main row “looked pretty with their front gardens and picket fences but they were anything but idyllic. The front door gave entry to the front room. There was a fireplace with a high mantel shelf and a single gas lamp towards one end of the shelf.” A slatted shed-like door with gaps at top and bottom led to “the scullery/kitchen. It had a shallow sink with a single cold water tap. The stairs ran steeply up behind the sink wall to a landing (second bedroom) from where one went through a curtained doorway into the front bedroom. I believe there was another fireplace and a single gas lamp in the bedroom. Outside there was a six-foot fence between adjoining back doors, and at a short distance on either side of the fence were the brick-built toilets; hanging on each fence was a tin bath.” David Rymill David.Rymill1993@alumni.aber.ac.uk (020) 8330 6563 Worcester Park, Old Malden and North Cheam: History at our Feet Published in 2012 and available at £10 (plus £2 towards postage if required) from the Rymill family. Ruth Jemmett Writes The frosty kiss of autumn Ruth Jemmett Muses On The Month Of September

It seems that it was only yesterday when I was wandering around garden centres in the Spring, choosing plants to fill my troughs and hanging baskets. How I prayed for the sunny days that would encourage my Petunias and Bizzy Lizzies to grow more than a few inches high. My prayers were surely answered. The sun eventually arrived, and those same plants are now enormous and magnificently colourful, with their stems snaking in all directions, as they make a huge growth spurt before the first night frosts of September render them weak and pale. When the poet Henry Van Dyke wrote The Frosty Kiss Of Autumn, his description captured the time when a chill night can obliterate months of beauty and perfume. There is something sad about pruning at this time of the year. My once eye-catching baskets now look distinctly apologetic, and my once stunning roses are becoming shadows of their former selves - rather like glamorous film stars who are past their hey-day, with veins standing out, and their blush fading. This is surely the time to start buying spring bulbs, and to start imagining how even more stunning our suburban retreat will look next year! After recent heavy showers the conifers decided to turn into unstructured Triffids, so now is the time to contact the gardeners who tame them before the weather turns ugly. My newly acquired raspberry cage was my star purchase this year, and my freezer is now crammed with its luscious fruit. I have two large buddleia bushes in my garden. These plants are often referred to as The Butterfly Bush, as butterflies love their nectar. I have enjoyed spending sunnier days taking photographs of butterflies, and will send you towards the cooler Autumn days with a pretty ‘photo I took of a Comma that conveniently posed for me while it preened itself! September was the seventh month of the Roman calendar, and its name is derived from the Latin

word for ‘seven’, which is ‘septem’. The Romans considered it to be the month of fire, as they celebrated the god Vulcan at this time of year. I was wandering around the internet, wondering how other cultures celebrated this month, and you might be interested to know that, for reasons best known to the Americans (who seem to celebrate the existence of just about everyone and everything), this is also Potato Month, Chicken Month, Piano Month, and

Biscuit Month. As far as I am concerned, Biscuit Month applies to every month of the year, as I am sure that my passion for Sainsbury’s Shortie Biscuits keeps the firm going! As Autumn takes a hold, children return to school after their seemingly never-ending summer holiday. When I attended my junior school I used to love the fact that we were going into the season of playing ‘conkers’, using the fruits of the Horse Chestnut tree. The boys at my school took this ‘sport’ very seriously, with some of them asking their mothers to slightly roast the chestnuts, or paint them with clear varnish to strengthen them. I am sure that there were many minor accidents in those days, caused by misdirected conkers hitting children on the head, but we somehow survived. In these days of Health and Safety, some schools have banned the game. Others have given it the go-ahead, only allowing it if children wear protective clothing. Goodness knows how my generation survived playing marbles, chewing bubble gum, or tattooing themselves with oldfashioned pen nibs soaked in ink! We all lived to tell the tale. The ritual of Harvest Thanksgiving is still alive and well in churches and schools throughout the country. I can remember searching through my food cupboards many years ago, so that I could contribute edibles to my son’s school. Such foodstuffs were distributed to local old people’s homes. I remember the time I gave him twenty tins of sardines, (well, they WERE in date, and were piling up at an alarming rate …), and I wondered if the teachers might think that his mother was a penguin! I was recently mulling through my old diaries. (We writers start scribbling down our thoughts from our earliest years, whether people want to know about them or not!), and I realised that one of my favourite songs during my teens involved the month of September. The singer-songwriter Carole King, and Gerry Goffin, had composed “It Might As Well Rain Until September” when I was sixteen. They wrote it for the then popular American pop idol, Bobby Vee, whose glossy photograph adorned my bedroom wall. I still have that ‘45’ Record (as they were then known), along with a few dozen other recording antiques!. (Many years later I went to see him perform at Wimbledon Theatre, and suddenly felt very old when I realised that his adult son was part of his backing band!)

12

It is exactly fifty years(in 1965) ago that the dress designer Mary Quant, launched the ’miniskirt’ on the world. In 1966 I summoned up enough courage to wear one to an office where I worked. It was strawberry pink, and as I tottered along on my fashionable ’winkle-picker’ high heels (in all of my 5’ 8” glory) I am sure that I looked just like an ungainly stork! Youngsters might think that they are very daring regarding their fashions nowadays, but I promise you that our generation have seen it all before! In those far off days I regularly wore giant false eyelashes to parties, and could create a minitornado if |I blinked., and my friends and I were sporting ‘eye-flicks’ at the corners of our peepers long before Kate Moss was born! Music lovers will be more than aware that the summer months are when The Proms take place at The Royal Albert Hall, culminating in the world famous Last Night in mid-September. There is something quintessentially British about the sight of hundreds of people waving flags, and singing patriotic songs. Yes, of course it’s jingoistic, and is probably totally out of step with our multi-cultural society, but it is always guaranteed to send you to bed with a smile on your face! The 23rd of September is the time of The Autumnal Equinox, which means that it will only be a month before we have to turn the clocks back. Before we know it The Frosty Kiss of Autumn will be turning into The Chilly Claw of Winter. Now is the time to get the central heating checked, the duvet changed over to a warmer Tog, and to get those Ugg Boots out. Yes, of course we might have an ‘Indian Summer’, but I wouldn’t bank on it! Hobbies

conducted research with people aged 65 and over and discovered that playing an instrument for an hour a week produced strong changes in the brain. Psychologist Lutz Jancke from the university described the outcomes revealed by the research:

What your brain can gain from a music-making hobby Kate McLelland When did you last pick up a musical instrument and play a piece of music from beginning to end? Last week? Last month? Last year? Sadly for most people the answer is quite likely to be: “Not since I was a child.” Musicians are most likely to develop their abilities during childhood. It’s the ideal time to learn basic skills such as reading music and playing an instrument, but as children turn into teenagers it’s not unusual to find that the pleasures of learning and playing are sacrificed to the pressures of taking exams, studying at college or university and – eventually – taking up full-time work. In Sweden, researchers interviewed a random selection of 16 to 19 year olds who enjoyed regular music sessions. Starting in the 1980s, the researchers returned at specific times over the next two decades to interview their subjects. They discovered that by the time the respondents had reached their twenties, the proportion still managing to attend weekly sessions had dramatically decreased to just 6%. Although it may be hard to find time to make music as a busy adult, much attention has recently been focused on the physiological benefits of learning to play an instrument. For example, a study based on 157 sets of twins discovered that those who were able to make music were 33% less likely to suffer from dementia. While it’s unclear exactly why this might be, there is a theory that learning to play an instrument – which involves a wide range of brain regions, functions and processes – empowers the brain in such a way that it is able to draw on its “cognitive reserves” when under attack. Other reports have suggested that playing music can improve listening skills, encourage better self-discipline, help with memory and even increase the IQ of both children and adults. In 2009 the University of Zurich

of the brain changes.”

“The parts of the brain that control hearing and memory and the part that controls the hands all become more active. Essentially, the architecture

So whether you’re returning to an instrument you once loved to play, or learning for the first time, you can enjoy your hobby in the knowledge that you’re not just bringing pleasure to others through your music, you are enhancing your brain’s capabilities. If you’re feeling insecure about your musical skills, those first few steps towards learning (or returning to) a musical instrument will be crucial. You should make sure that tuition progresses at just the right pace for you: too fast, and you may lose confidence, too slow, and you’ll quickly become bored and frustrated. Fortunately there are a number of organisations whose purpose is to signpost musicians towards the help they need to develop. There are many resources out there, so take your time to explore the options, working towards a solution that’s tailor-made for your level of skill and experience. If you live in a city you may be able to access adult education services. Pick up a prospectus at your local library or search online to find a suitable course. Some adult learning institutes let you try a taster session so you can decide if the lessons are appropriate before you book an entire course. Alternatively, find a local tutor by searching the Music Teachers UK website (www.musicteachers.co.uk). This organisation offers a free service to help musicians with every aspect of education and performance and the site provides some valuable information, including a helpful guide to selecting a music teacher. If you are returning to music and have retained some basic (if rusty) skills, you might enjoy joining up with a local amateur music group, or even putting together a group from scratch. Making Music (www.makingmusic. org.uk) helps its members to set up, run and develop

music groups in their communities. As a leading organisation for voluntary music in the UK, its remit is to encourage music groups and individuals of all kinds to take part in a vibrant, multi-cultural music scene.

The BBC’s website also provides some useful links, including resources to help you learn to read music, explore local courses and even find an amateur orchestra in your area (www.bbc.co.uk/learning/ subjects/music.shtml). Musicians who take up an instrument after a long absence from playing often report that the hardest part is finding the self-discipline to practice. “The Musician’s Way, a guide to Practice, Performance and Wellness”, written by Gerald Klickstein (available from Amazon) is a book that provides tips on motivation and time management. Kickstein has also written a blog (at www. musiciansway.com), which offers an easy to follow, 9-step guide for returning musicians.

Whatever your interest in music, whether it’s performing to concert level or joining an amateur ukulele orchestra, it can be a hugely rewarding hobby. Apart from the hours of pleasure you’ll get from playing, science suggests that your brain is likely to stay sharp well into old age.

Community The Friends of Worcester Park Library Garden On Saturday 8th August 2015 the Worcester Park Library Garden was officially opened. We had organic vegetables from the local allotments in our raffle, a wish tree for children and adults, tea, coffee, juice and biscuits for the community. Our local hero retired Major Relph Rickard cut the ribbon and declared the garden open. Major Relph Rickard fought in WWII and was named after his uncle Relph (a family name spelt with an “e”) who died in WW1 at 21. In January 2013 the project began when Relph and I attended the Mayor’s Buffet and spoke of the idea to local Councillors, I was asked to put the idea down on paper. I did a plan of a garden area, an aerial view of the existing library and car park area, reasons for the garden and Relph drew a sketch of the area. In February 2013 the idea was put forward to the OLF (Outer London Fund) but we were told that it was too late and maybe another time. In March I was approached by the Council and encouraged to apply for a grant through the local participatory budget grants. This was the chance to get the garden project up and running. I had also been told of the London Mayor’s Pocket Park scheme grants. In May a presentation for £5,000 was presented to the local people and Councillors and we came in second out of 15 applicants. We were awarded £5,000 to start the library garden project. Relp takes a trip up to Planning to see if Planning is required or not for this project. In August I had a meeting with the Waitrose Manager Simon Cuzner who liked the idea of a garden for the community. Simon agreed to the project but reduced the initial size of the project as this involved taking too many parking spaces away. Applied for the London Mayor’s Pocket Parks grant but was not successful. In September the Friends of Worcester Park library had new plans drawn up and held a coffee morning for everyone to show the plans and get the community involved either with helping in the garden or donations. A Garden Proposal was written which was to stand as a document with all details and questions answered for the project. In October The WI came on board and offered help from the garden club regarding maintenance In February 2014 Waitrose agreed to help on the finance of the garden and offered up to £20,000 in match funding In March 2014 We had our first Planning meeting as to whether the project needed Planning Permission and we applied for the Mayors Grant and now it was a waiting game as to whether we could take this project to the next level? During the next few months there were several meetings,

18

emails, phone calls as each time a problem or questions arose we needed to have answers and keep on top as this project was more complex than we originally thought. In April second presentation given for the £5,000 grant money. In July I had notification from The London Mayor that we were successful in our application and they would be awarding us £17,000 for the garden project. In August due to Council cut backs I had a meeting with Stephanie Crossley who came to tell me that the project could not go ahead. After a presentation she decided to go away and try to find a solution to the project. After a few emails we finally had a meeting with Planning. In September - Planning meeting In October - meetings In November - Meeting at City Hall the London Mayor’s Office. Office for a third extension to the project. Work begins on Tuesday 30th June 2015 – Work complete Wednesday 29th July ahead of schedule. As you can see this project had over two and a half years of work and there was many a long day and several obstacles in the last few weeks and still the concern that this project may not go ahead. There were countless emails, phone calls and several presentations required. Success, we got there! I would like to thank several people along the way who contributed to this project. For all support letters sent to the Council and those of you that took the time to come to the library’s coffee morning and let us know your thoughts and comments. Last but not least my thanks, love and appreciation go to Relph the Major. Relph drew sketches for the garden to help with the first presentation, seen potential and directed me and put me on the right track when I felt I was at a dead end. Note: Parking spaces at the beginning of this project was 196, now there are 197 in the Waitrose car park. With the recycling area being taken away we gained three spaces and we took two for the project. The disabled spaces have been relocated. I would just like to say that if you have ever considered doing voluntary work? When I got involved with the friends over 5 years ago my whole world changed. To give is one thing but what you received back is so much more. Fabulous friendships have been made along the way and I hope that they continue to bloom in the same way Worcester Park Library Garden does. Nelson Mandela “It always seems impossible until its done” Thank you Jackie Frost – Chairperson Friends of Worcester Park Library

View from the City

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

If you know the news, you probably saw that there was no news. This past month should be remembered by all of us as a classic example of no new news driving the daily news - well at least in the financial world anyway. If I look back over my past few talks and my scribblings for the last six months, it’s very clear to see that there are some fairly fundamental themes running along, all of which seem to take it in turns to grab a headline every so often.

24

economic growth. However, that is a long way from economic catastrophe as some have been heralding. Of course if we all turn into such financial zombies then it could become a self-fulfilling truth as the confidence is leached away, but we are nowhere near that for the moment. What we have seen therefore is not a change in news, but rather something far stronger, and that is a change in sentiment. There was in August no new news of any size and merit, but there was a change in attitude, some would say a realisation that at last, for example, China was slowing down. Had they really not seen that before?

So we have the Euro fears from a Greek potential exit, to the very future of the currency itself. Then alongside that the Euro zone economies, the worries about US interest rate rises and of course the ever running story of China’s economic slowdown. I am sure you can add several others quite easily from Ukraine to ISIS and the oil price. So what was fascinating about the sudden bout of market fears in August was that there was no new news! Everything that suddenly became an excuse for fear and panic was everything that we knew the month before.

It was that old line that with the news the confidence for the investors was that the glass was half full and therefore positive. Three weeks into August and the same glass, with apparently the same amount of water was now seen as half empty and thus far more negative. That is of course not to mention the unfortunate Chinese private investors who I suspect now feel that their glasses are neither half full, nor empty, but rather somewhat seriously cracked. So as we start in September (and we haven’t had the St Leger Day races yet at Doncaster) the markets are twitchy. However that does not mean that the global economy is stopping and in fact global growth is still running at around 3% which is its long term average. But of course as we all know “global economy running at long term average” is a lousy headline.

To this you can also add a certain laziness of reporting as the standard mantras of economic givens and measurements are trotted out again. My colleague Chris Darbyshire pointed to a lovely statistic that was grabbing the headlines, in that China’s demand for oil had fallen by 43%, and thus here was a clear indicator of the slowdown in the Chinese economy. Ok so now let’s strip out the price of the oil and the fact that it is priced in U.S. Dollars, and you get a rather different picture. In fact if you look at the volume demand from China for oil it was in fact up by some 8% - rather a different view from -43%.

Thus as investors we should be prepared for both a meteorological and financial stormy autumn. Why? Because it usually is. In my view this will throw up opportunities to buy assets at an autumn discount. Some are already saying that this is the end of the bull market and that we should be selling on the peaks and not buying on the dips. Well for me if companies are still giving reasonable outlooks, and economies showing relatively positive growth, then why would I not want to own assets which are in the longer term increasing in value and giving a nice steady compounding return.

To this we can add similar variations in data which shows that iron ore demand was roughly flat and certainly not at the -43% which has been widely quoted. So here we see then some very misleading headlines which allow the media and market commentators to wail and cry that “the end is nigh” and the global economy is seemingly doomed. Well yes they are right to show that we have had a great bull run in equity markets after the financial crash, and yes post the financial surgery taken by many nations, we are now in a slower, lower world of

Therefore listen to the shipping forecast and we can avoid the tempests of Iceland, Forth and Cromarty, and keep ourselves in safer waters. Not a very good analogy, but probably allows me to say that I probably know sweet Rockall. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. History

Tower in its first year and 100,000 dined in the restaurant. Then in October 1971, the IRA set off a bomb in the gents’ loo on an observation deck underneath the restaurant. No-one was hurt and no structural damage was done but security was ever afterwards a concern. In 1980 the tower was closed to the public. Ostensibly this was on security grounds, as the Troubles were intensifying; actually, though, the newly-created BT (after which the tower was renamed) saw a great deal less trouble and more profit in operating the upper stages as a swish venue for corporate functions than as a downmarket tourist attraction; it’s rather telling and perhaps indicative of the times that even though the Troubles are ancient history now, the tower has never reopened.

Golden Years – Memories of 50 years ago

Exactly 51 weeks after coming to power with a majority of four, Harold Wilson seized a very public opportunity to prove that when he said he was going to reforge Britain in the white heat of the technological revolution, he meant it. For on 8th October 1965 he cut the ribbon on perhaps the most visible manifestation in Britain of the new world of hightech telecommunications: the Post Office Tower. Not all was as it seemed, of course. First, Harold Wilson had absolutely nothing to do with the tower’s creation: it was first proposed in 1954; construction started in June 1961; and it was topped out in July 1964, three months before the general election. Secondly, the microwave technology it existed to support was not quite white-hot: the purpose of the tower was to replace an array of microwave antennae that had been built on top of a neighbouring telephone exchange in 1947, and which was now in danger of being overshadowed by the many much taller officeblocks that were at the planning stage. But performing the official opening made a great photo-opportunity for such an avowed moderniser as Wilson. At 177 metres tall (191 if you include the antennae), and on foundations rammed 53m deep into the clay beneath Maple Street, Fitzrovia, it was London’s tallest building until the NatWest Tower was completed 15 years later. The slim, elegant, green-glass shaft with its 29 microwave dishes and 16 storeys packed with mysterious technology was visible from almost everywhere in London, and was utterly unlike anything Londoners had ever seen. Serene and unmoving it may have appeared but it was actually frenetically busy: TV shows, radio programmes, long-distance telephone calls, air traffic control data and military traffic – all began their silent and invisible journeys round the country from this point. But this was the ‘60s, when the concept of modernity was as much cultural as technological; and culture in the ‘60s was a democratic affair. Not only was the tower entirely designed by the in-house architects at the Ministry of Works, not only was it entirely publicly funded (to the tune of £2.5 million), and not only was it open to the public, but the whole thing was crowned by a restaurant that revolved at a snail’s pace, taking 22 minutes to complete a circuit without causing a ripple on the surface of the diners’ glasses of Blue Nun. To novelty-hungry Londoners it was a sensation: more than a million people visited the

1 Place the pork fillet in a shallow dish. Mix together the hoi sin sauce and 1 tbsp of the soy sauce and spread over the pork fillet. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 1-2 hours. Remove from the fridge and stand at room temperature for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C / Fan 180°C / Gas Mark 6. 2 Place the pork fillet on a rack set over a roasting tin. Pour 600ml water into the base of the tin (this helps to keep the pork moist during cooking). Roast in the oven for 35-40 minutes until just cooked through. Cover with foil and leave to rest in a warm place for 15 minutes. 3 Meanwhile, cook the rice in a large pan of boiling, salted water for 8-10 minutes until just tender. Drain well. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or wok and fry the carrots for 5 minutes. Add the pepper, spring onions, peas and sweetcorn and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. 4 Stir in the cooked rice and beaten egg and cook over a high heat, stirring all the time, for 1-2 minutes, or until the rice is piping hot and the egg has just set. Stir in the remaining soy sauce and season with freshly ground black pepper. Use a sharp knife to slice the pork fillet and serve on a bed of the hot vegetable rice. TIP You can add a bit of extra heat to the marinade with a finely chopped red chilli pepper or a few crushed dried chilli flakes, if liked.

Nonsuch Park

Nonsuch Park is a link to Tudor England. The Palace that once stood here was a hugely expensive symbol of Henry VIII’s power. The Friends of Nonsuch offer guidance to a 7 feet model which has been created from contemporary documentation, paintings and an excavation of the Palace site in 1959. The model is on display in the Stable Wing of the much later Nonsuch Mansion in the heart of Nonsuch Park. The model is open from 11 am until 3 pm every Sunday in November and December; admission £2.50; cars via Cheam Gate. Tax Matters By Andrew Khan - Principal Accountant at Tax Affinity Accountants.

Sole Trader v Limited Company A difficult question that the self-employed face is whether to trade as a sole trader/partnership or to trade as a limited company. However, the answer isn’t definitive and is dependent on many factors ranging from the type of business you are running to the type of person you are. Whichever one you choose has different implications for tax, legal and financial responsibilities. The aim of this article is to give you an insight to the advantages and disadvantages in terms of tax purposes of being a sole trader/in a partnership or forming your own limited company. Hopefully it will inform you on the structure most beneficial to you. Legality As a sole trader, you are the business. You have full control and ownership of the business and are able to manage it in any way you like. On the contrary, a limited company is its own legal entity. Instead you serve the company as a director of the company and act as a shareholder. In most cases, you are considered as an employee but this status is not automatically granted in terms of Employment Law, the National Minimum Wage or for Tax Credits. Tax – Sole Trader You are subject to income tax on the taxable profits of your business. For the tax year 2013/14, you pay 20% tax on income between £0 - £31,785 and 40% tax on income between £31,786 - £150,000. Income above £150,000 is taxed at 45%. The personal allowance amount for persons aged under 65 is £10,600. You are also required to pay Class 2 & 4 National Insurance contributions (NIC). Class 2 NIC are at a flat rate of £2.80 per week. However, you may not need to pay Class 2 NIC if your earnings are below £5,725 for the whole year. Class 4 NIC is calculated based on your profits for the year. For 2013/14, you pay 9% on annual profits between £8,060 and £42,385 and then 2% on any amount over that. Any trading losses you incur on your business can be offset against other your income to reduce your tax liabilities. Tax – Limited Company For a limited company, it pays corporation tax on its taxable profits. Company tax rates are lower than the higher rates of income tax. If you are employed under your company and taking a salary, your earnings from that employment are subject to income tax and Class 1 NIC due through PAYE (Pay As You Earn). The amount you pay is dependent on your earnings. Shareholders of the company who are on a higher tax bracket may have to pay higher a higher tax rate on any dividend income they receive. Losses from the company can only be offset against its other income but not against your income as an individual. What does it all mean?

Now for most people, the above two paragraphs may have confused you further. But here is a scenario that will make things easier to understand and hopefully give you enough information to aid you in that important decision. You have a trading income of £30,000 pre tax and wish to extract all the profits for yourself. As a sole trader, you will be taxed at around 29% for any income and NI in excess of your personal allowances. The total tax liability including the Class 2 & 4 NIC amounts approximately to £6,000.20 (assuming normal personal allowance of £10,600). This leaves you with £23,999.80 in real terms after taxes. The tax calculation for a limited company is slightly more complex as you have more flexibility in how you distribute the income. For simplicity sake, you take the minimum annual wage that is not liable for PAYE tax or NIC which is around £7,956. Company profits under £300,000 are taxed at a rate of 20%. Taxable profits are again at £30,000 which amounts to a corporation tax liability of £4,408.80 (after tax free wages). This leaves you with £25,591.20 in real terms taken as tax free dividends because it’s below the current earnings threshold of £31,785 (you only pay tax once under current rules). So in this scenario, it is better to work as a Limited Company because you pay much less tax. However, calculations may differ depending on the trading income and how much salary you take. The general idea is that as your trading income increases, its becomes more and more beneficial to trade as a limited company than as a sole trader (40% income tax versus 20% corporation tax). Just a Final Note The Government has announced that the corporation tax rate will fall in 2017 to 19% and in 2020 to 18%. But in some cases you can be better off trading as a sole trader for tax purposes if your annual trading profits are not high or if you want to have losses brought forward from a previous year. However, many businesses opt to form limited companies for reasons that extend past tax issues. A limited company status adds prestige and makes a trader appear more established and reliable. Also should the business fail, you will not be personally liable for its debts if you were a limited company. If you plan to sell the business after a few years then limited is again a better choice. Also if you plan to expand the business then getting finance for your business may be easier if you were a limited company. There are many varying circumstances that makes being one more appealing than the other but if you still appear unsure then feel free to contact us and we’ll be sure to offer you tailored expert advice. Community Who are the Cuddington Residents’ Association, CRA?

Cuddington Ward councillors: Robert Foote, Lucie Dallen and Deputy Mayor George Crawford. Eber Kington represents Cuddington, Ewell Court and Auriol & Stoneleigh Residents’ Associations at Surrey County Council. Where is Cuddington? Cuddington Ward is on the northern tip of the Borough of Epsom and Ewell, centred around Shadbolt Park. A little bit of History The local politics of Epsom & Ewell have for a good part of the twentieth century been bound up with an almost unique form of democratic process. With the enormous expansion of housing in the 1930’s local residents’ associations were formed to give residents a forum for local debate, to organise social activities on the new estates, and to represent local views. At the beginning of the 20th century, many candidates for election to local government stood as independents. With increasing party-politicisation of national and local government, Epsom & Ewell stood out against the tide. The residents’ associations themselves put up candidates for election to the Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, and their candidates have been in control for nearly 80 years.

Our goal To serve our local community by representing the views of the residents to the elected and county councillors, to make sure Cuddington remains a fantastic place to live. Recently we have introduced social media to the residents’ associations including a website, www.cuddingtonra.org and are also supported with a facebook page to keep up to date with current news in the Cuddington Ward. Cuddington Residents’ Association is open to all local residents and membership is only £3 per year, providing quarterly magazines called ‘The Cuddingtonian’. Recently the Cuddington Residents’ Association have been involved with the installment of the outdoor gym & new playground equipment at Shadbolt Park as well as the new tennis courts at Auriol Park. Gardening Leaf litter

Pippa Greenwood Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, tree-loving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!

44

Leaves that are allowed to build up can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - the sooner the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive. If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves then the easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grass-collector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you can pick by hand, or you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). After collecting the leaves, make leaf mould. It is easy and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry…and then leave them be. Chop up larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) first so they rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. Avoid very spiky leaves, and those that are very leathery and tough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. You can speed the process up by adding a leaf mould activator, which is available from garden centres. You can also make leaf mould in a bin liner or other bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick. Bin liners full of leaves can be hidden anywhere

that you have the space - perhaps behind the shed, garage or greenhouse. If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, then there are now some lovely jute mesh bags which can be crammed full of leaves and act as a perfect container whilst the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce. You can see these on my website www.pippagreenwood.com/products. Whichever method you use you should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but leave it a bit longer and it will be even better! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for gorgeous gardening things including the unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - you choose the vegetables you’d like to grow and Pippa sends garden-ready plants as well as weekly advice and tips emails to you. Plus Nemaslug, signed books, jute composting bags and lots more besides.

Safer Neighbourhoods Burglary How does a burglar’s mind work? Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured: • Side gates open • Accessible windows open • Ladders left out, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible windows • Garden tools available to force entry • Untrimmed hedges or high fences preventing natural surveillance Each of these makes access to the building far simpler and is an indication to the prospective burglar that it’s worth a second look. Residents of multi occupancy dwellings or flats should be mindful not to grant entry to people via an entry phone system, if they do not know them, and to be cautious of people seeking to ‘tailgate’ them into buildings. The question is, are the occupants in? • milk bottles or parcels on the doorstep • newspapers and mail in the letter box • unlit houses after dark • all windows shut in very hot weather These are signs telling the burglar that he is unlikely to be disturbed in the course of his work. Naturally, circumstances may arise when such situations may be unavoidable. If we can take measures that tell the burglar that this building is too difficult or too risky a target, he will hopefully move on. To stop a burglar, you need to think like one. To a burglar, a stuffed letter box is a dead giveaway when you’re not at home. Ask a neighbour to remove your post while you are away. To a burglar, a dark doorway is an opportunity to hide. Fit a security light over your front door to deter burglars. To a burglar, a dark house is an empty house. Attaching a timer to a lamp will make your home appear occupied even when it isn’t. If you are away for extended periods. • Cancel the delivery of milk and newspapers • Disconnect the telephone answering machine, or re-word your greeting message to give the impression that you are only temporarily unable to answer. • Enlist the help of a neighbour, friend or relative to keep a regular eye on your property and keep the front door clear of deliveries. • If you are prepared to leave a key with a willing neighbour/relative, ask for curtains to be drawn and lights to be put on at night. If snow is on the ground

46

a few footprints will make the

house appear inhabited. • Check your insurance policy. Some insurance policies for contents don’t cover you if you are away for more than 30 days. • Set your burglar alarm. • If you do not have an alarm, consider investing a few pounds in a dummy alarm box. It may well deter the opportunist thief. Baking Halloween macaroons For the ultimate Halloween sweet treat why not have a go at making a batch of French Macaroons? Makes 16 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling 230g icing sugar, sifted 75g ground almonds 2 large egg whites 50g caster sugar Orange and black food colouring gel 55g unsalted butter, softened ½ tsp vanilla extract 1 Place half the icing sugar and all the ground almonds in a food processor and process for 30 seconds, or until fine and powdery. Sift the mixture into a mixing bowl, discarding any tiny pieces of almonds left in the sieve. Set aside. 2 Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until softly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, to make a firm and glossy meringue. Whisk in enough of the orange food colouring gel to colour the meringue deep orange. 3 Fold one third of the icing sugar mixture into the meringue using a spatula. Repeat with another third of the mixture. Finally add the last third and continue to cut and fold the mixture until it forms a shiny and thick batter that falls in a slow ribbon when the spatula is lifted. 4 Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a 1cm plain piping nozzle. Pipe 32 discs of the mixture onto the baking sheets, each with a diameter of 3cm. Lift the nozzle at the top of half the piped discs to create a small point. Leave for 30 minutes to allow the macaroons to dry and form a slight crust. Preheat the oven to 160°C / Fan 140°C / Gas Mark 3.

5 Bake, one sheet at a time for 10-15 minutes, or until the macaroons have a crisp shell and the frilly bases don’t stick when gently lifted from the paper. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. 6 To decorate, dip the tip of a fine paintbrush into the black food colouring gel and paint pumpkin faces on the 16 pointed macaroons. 7 To make the filling, beat the butter, remaining icing sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Place all the undecorated macaroon shells flat-side up on a board. Pipe a small mound of the buttercream onto each shell then gently sandwich together with a decorated shell, pressing down gently. TIP The filled macaroons will keep in an airtight box in the fridge for 2-3 days. Stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.

Voice for Wildlife

He states “ The benefits to the ecosystem would be massive. Lynx control foxes and deer, allowing ground flora to regenerate; in turn, invertebrates and small mammals boom. Birds are the major benefactors. Biodiversity invigorated from the top down, and natures’ rhythms become balanced again.”

by Carol Williams Return of the Lynx? For this article I am borrowing much of my material from a Nature Focus piece by Elisabeth Garton in the Autumn issue of Broadleaf - the magazine of The Woodland Trust. I’m certain I have touched on the topic of ‘Rewilding’ in earlier articles and mentioned the Lynx UK Trust before. but at that time I was merely writing from a position of almost wishful thinking and not really believing I would see any action to bring this vision any closer in the near future, but now there is reason to hope that the dream can actually soon become a reality. Excited doesn’t even begin to describe my feelings about this! Ecstatic is nearer the mark. Dr Paul O’ Donoghue, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Lynx UK Trust, is working hard to spearhead the reintroduction of lynx pairs to several trial sites in the UK. If the go-ahead is given, the work could begin early next year. The proposed release areas are: Grizedale, in the Lake District, Thetford in Norfolk, The Kielder Forest in Northumberland, Grumack in Aberdeenshire and Galloway and Argyll.

Mike Townsend , Woodland Trust conservationist, says: “To make this work, we need more trees - and plenty of them.” Sounds good to me, all of it. More birds. More trees. Enriched biodiversity. What is not to like? A consultation by the Lynx UK Trust recently discovered that 85% of respondents would be happy to see these beautiful animals restored to the British countryside within the next 12 months. To me, this is wonderful news. And a surprise. I hadn’t expected people to be this supportive. I hope it’s evidence of a shift in attitude towards wild creatures and their right to exist alongside us, without interference from us. Dr O’Donoghue has worked in lynx habitat for most of his 16 year career, and recalls vividly one amazing encounter

MOT

“Spotting a lynx is like seeing a ghost - you can’t quite believe it. It was dusk, I was alone, and there it was. Quite pale, completely wild, those unmistakeable tufted ears. I looked at it, it looked at me.... I got within about 60 yards before it sloped off into the forest. The whole encounter can’t have lasted more than a few seconds, but it was utterly exhilerating - and it’s etched in my memory forever”

SERVICE CENTRE

I will be happy to know the animals are back, and out there, living as they should, without the need to see one for myself, but their presence anywhere will be enough to have me booking a holiday in that area!

We carry out MOTs on site with late appointments available Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings

Five other ‘lost’ species that are currently making a comeback are - the pine marten, the red kite, the polecat, the white-tailed sea eagle and wild boar.

of youthful enthusiasm from our less senior and younger players. This wonderful mixture of ages and backgrounds is reflected in our social side, where all the traditional aspects of rugby club frivolity are expounded to the utmost by a full spectrum of members. Our social calendar for this coming season is full and varied, being capped off by a tour to Dublin in May 2016.

Wandsworthians RFC Wandsworthians Rugby Football Club, or The Dubs, as we tend to call ourselves, is what remains of the Old Boys of Wandsworth School, which until 1989 stood in Sutherland Grove. Once having managed to put out six teams each Saturday, The Old Wandsworthians obviously lost their source of new players from the ranks of former pupils upon the closing of the school. With the ‘Old’ dropped, new blood from outside of the school was recruited and The Dubs, as it is today, was born. Competing in the RFU’S London and South East Division, Surrey 4, we have retained that ‘Club Ethic’, whereby we will welcome players of all abilities, with many who have never played rugby before. Along with many club members who have given their services for over forty years, we enjoy a wealth

Currently using Kings College Sports Ground in Windsor Avenue, New Malden as our home ground, we benefit from the provision of fine quality facilities, and a rugby pitch which is the envy of many, if not most of our opponents. The bar, which is the hub of any rugby club, is comfortable and well stocked ! Berrylands railway station is just a short walk away, and New Malden town centre is also within easy reach on foot. Our training sessions, which are held every Tuesday at 7pm, also take place at KCL, where floodlights and all the above facilities can be enjoyed. Our fully qualified coaching staff will be on hand to try and extract every ounce of ability from all our players, and unify them into a team. Although The Dubs are committed to winning and improving our rugby, the elements of fun
