Welcome to

our June edition

Dear All,

Having baked cakes, blown up balloons, hung up banners and organized numerous party games over the past few weeks (why is it that everyone’s birthday in my family falls so close together?) it will finally be my turn to celebrate the passing of another year later this month and, as ever, will look forward to toasting the ‘big day’ with my lovely husband, girls and a few local chums (not to mention our feathered, egg-laying friends at the end of the garden!). I’ve always loved the fact that my birthday is exactly 6 months before - and 6 months after Christmas (depending on which way you choose to look it at!). However, these days, I prefer to focus on the positive fact that I was born pretty much ‘slap bang’ in the [official] middle of Summer (although it was a great deal warmer in Cyprus where I was born the day I entered the world!). This means I usually get to sit out in the garden and take in the warmth of the British sunshine for at least part of my special day and remind myself how lucky we are to live in such a pretty suburb. As we enter the last half term of the school calendar (particularly relevant for those children, parents and teachers among our readership), there will be many fun activities to look forward to, including school trips, sports days, end of year discos and, of course, the many, annual summer fair’s already popping up across the area. Who said school days weren’t the best days of your life, eh? And, a final message goes out to all our teens (and preteens) sitting school exams this month. The very best of luck from us all at WPL and just remember, this time next month, it will nearly all be over and you’ll looking forward to that lovely long summer holiday! Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisher P.S. Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when replying to adverts and get in touch by 17th June if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the July edition(s). A Big welcome to our brand new advertisers this month: Nordon Heating, CJM Blumbing, Kumon, Ransoms Plant Hire, Cheam Leisure Centre, Epsom Marble, Alexander Furniturem MSH Security and The River Club.

Why advertise with us? Worcester Park Life is such a great local magazine to advertise my business in. I got so much interest. I started my baby/ toddler music classes in August. I am now opening the forth and fifth classes. Thanks to Worcester Park Life. Ginger from Music Fun As “the local plumber” I’m pleased to be a part of the New Malden Village Voice and Worcester Park Life communities, living and working with the people in the area. The publications bring me a lot of my local work and Jenny manages my Ad in a very helpful, professional manner. I’ve been a regular advertiser in both magazines for a couple of years now and would thoroughly recommend the service to other local, small businesses. Andy Reeve, plumber

History

How Worcester Park celebrated the Coronation

June 2nd will be the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s

coronation, which took place nearly 16 months after her accession (marked by last year’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations). Events across Worcester Park in summer 1953 marked the event. Some local people witnessed the occasion in the capital. Margaret Rymill recalls going to London on the morning of Coronation Day: ‘We got up at 4am and caught the 5.15am train from Worcester Park. We read in the morning newspapers that Everest had been climbed by Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tensing. Along with hundreds of other people we arrived at Victoria Station and made our way to Buckingham Palace. We saw the Royal Standard being raised over the Palace at 6am. Walking down The Mall, we saw many people who had spent the night there in the rain. They had protected themselves with newspapers. ‘We found a place along The Mall; the crowd was about six deep and we collected old newspapers and

cardboard to stand on so that we had a good view of all the processions. At last the Queen came past on her way to Westminster Abbey. We had a perfect view of her although she was on the other side of the carriage, because she looked our way just at the right time. We were back home by 1pm and heard the return of the Queen on the wireless.’ For the first time, the ceremony was televised, and many people bought sets, or squeezed into the living-rooms of those who had, so, in contrast to previous coronations, many local events were held on surrounding days rather than the actual day. They included a carnival procession around Sutton and Cheam, with decorated floats and cycles starting in Lynwood Drive, on 3rd June, and another around Malden and Coombe on the 6th from the corner of The Manor Drive and Malden Road. In Shadbolt Park, Cuddington Residents’ Association arranged a fancy-dress competition for children and adults (winning costumes included a nurse and an onion seller), children’s sports including a three-legged race for mixed 11s-14s (the winning three pairs all being girls), and an ‘old tyme’ football match between teams from the [Stoneleigh West?] school representing Cuddington and Stoneleigh, wearing top hats (Stoneleigh won 2-1). At St Mary’s Cuddington, special services were

Holidays

Camping on a Budget

Itof betheaffordable luxury of an overseas holiday is just not going for you this year, you probably don’t

want to spend a fortune in this country either. However it doesn’t mean you have to go without a break completely because camping can be great fun and very affordable. You can’t just put the TV on, there are no computer games for the children and your time is spent exploring forests and cooking outdoors. It makes for a wonderful family bonding experience completely unlike renting a holiday home, and is lots of fun if you can find a group of you to go. There’s a huge retail market around camping, and an hour on one of the many equipment websites could have you thinking that the whole event is going to be far too expensive, especially if you aren’t sure if you’ll do it more than once. It doesn’t have to cost the earth though. Firstly the tent. Take advantage of somebody else’s impulse buy by visiting secondhand sites to see what you can snap up - Ebay of course, but also Gumtree have plenty for sale. Sleeping bags might be necessary if you are hiking across the mountains, but chances are you’ll be driving to your camping site so take your own duvets and pillows with some old covers and that will be perfectly adequate. A night’s sleep on the hard ground isn’t comfortable though so you’ll need to find something to lie on. Cushions from outdoor chairs or a beach lilo will be good enough for children, but you might want to invest in an inflatable mattress for the adults. Other equipment such as a gas stove, water containers and plastic plates might be offered to you if you put a wanted advert on Gumtree or on Freecycle. And a polite plea to your friends could produce a surprising haul for you to borrow. You might not be able to look your glamorous best while camping and really, why would you? It’s time to get back to nature. However, it doesn’t mean you won’t want to clean up every day and proper toilet facilities are a must. Fortunately, these days all but the most rural sites will have a shower and toilet block. The internet will help you decide which site to go to. For example www.pitchup.com has 5000 UK and Ireland sites listed and it allows you to filter the features that are a ‘must’ for you and those that are a ‘nice to have’. For example you might want to visit a site that allows children and dogs (or doesn’t), has wifi access, or where there are cycling facilities nearby. Still not convinced? If you think this sounds like more hassle than it’s worth, you might want to consider ‘glamping’. It’s still sleeping in an open area surrounded by

12

trees, but the living accommodation is provided for you. Many sites offer tipis, yurts, wooden huts or even a gypsy caravan. This is going to cost more of course but is still very affordable. For example a week in early July in a tipi in Mid Wales would cost £550 for two adults and two children. The bed and bedding for the adults is supplied as well as futons for the children. You are also given your own cooking and toilet facilities. Remember, you won’t be the only one looking for a cheap summer break, so go online and book your pitch now. By Annie Lawson WPLife

MAY 2013 UPDATE An Active Market In our April update we noted properties were selling both quickly and in high volume. That pattern continues. Some properties are selling very quickly indeed. Consequently there are now a significant number of buyers, keen to live in the area, who have recently been pipped at the post and are very keen to find their new home. A couple of dates on the horizon contribute to that enthusiasm. Summer holidays and the start of the new school year are not that far away and buyers who want to be settled before they take time off, or who want to be in the right place for schools, know that they need to find their next home soon in order to achieve that. These and other factors have resulted in a very active spring market. We’re not surprised as many indicators have pointed towards a more buoyant market in 2013, but it is reassuring when our predictions materialise. So what happens now? Well this is when the hard work really starts for our team. The Hard Work In many ways selling a property is the easier, and certainly most visible, part of what we do. Behind the scenes though there is a plenty going on. After a sale has been agreed there is a misconception that Estate Agents sit back and let it all happen. It's true that not all Agents engage themselves in this phase, called sales progression, but at Jackson Noon we take it very seriously. You don’t sell your home every day of the week and the process is daunting, not least because the requirements change gently from year to year. There are reports to be commissioned, questions to be answered, money to be raised. Solicitors, mortgage companies, surveyors and agents up and down the chain begin to get involved so it’s not surprising that at this stage most people need a little friendly help and guidance. Some chains sail through to completion with little more assistance required than translation of legal terminology into plain English. We would love most chains to be so simple but unfortunately these are the exception rather than the rule. Somewhere in a chain there is nearly always a hitch and the more properties there are in a chain, as we’re sure you can guess, the more likely it is that there will be several little hold-ups, each of which will come out of the blue and seem insurmountable at the time. During this period an unexpected ripple on an otherwise calm sea can end up capsizing the boat. Our job is to keep everything on course to completion, anticipate the ripples and take appropriate action to ensure they pass by as uneventfully as possible. It helps that we have a great deal of experience and there is little that we haven't dealt with or heard of before. It also helps that we’ve spent years building up good working relationships with local professionals, so we know exactly who to call on when extra advice is needed. Lastly, but definitely not least, we have a legally qualified dedicated progressor whose sole task is to help all our sales through to completion. It is hard work but we believe that help through the sales progression stage is vital and it seems our clients agree. More than 70% of the clients we are currently helping have used Jackson Noon before. Many of the remaining 30% have come to us via recommendation. That’s a level of trust we have worked very hard to earn, fully respect, and work harder still to reward.

Ruth Jemmett Writes Summer Skies And Strawberry Flans C an it really be the month of the Summer Solstice already?

The 2lst of June is the longest day of the year - a time when druids gather to watch the sun rising over The Heel Stone at Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. In the 1980s the yearly ritual was attracting so many observers that people were entirely banned from the site for a while. Access was again granted in the 1990s. Most of the original hippies who used to haunt the place are now middle-aged, and these days probably boast a wife, two children and a dog - and only get sight of it as they whizz by in their Volvos on their way to their holiday homes. It seems only yesterday that I was keeping the central heating on all night. It feels as if we have skipped Spring, leaping from icy paths to June roses. At last the gardens here in Salisbury Road are ablaze with colour, and our ponds are once again coming alive. My friend and neighbour Mary has kindly given me a donation of a bucket-load of tadpoles, as I think that the newts and a visiting heron feasted on last year’s inhabitants. My small pond has been cloaked with blanket weed for the second year running, and I have been donning my elbowlength pond gloves and grimacing as I have yanked out the gooey slime. After battling with the green menace once too often I was recently relieved to learn from a fellow gardener that straw can make the water pure again - so watch this space! This month gives me a fond memory of a family ritual I used to participate in during the 1950s. A few days before Derby Day on Epsom Downs, I and my extended family would gather near Epsom Grandstand to enjoy what was known as Derby Sunday. The place thronged with people, and it was a wonderland to a child. We would spread rugs out on any available patch of green, and look forward to tea from thermos flasks that was flavoured with dust and grass. My late grandmother would make strawberry flans for the occasion, and the children of the family would drool in anticipation of such a treat. There were two funfairs in evidence at that time - one behind the grandstand, and one in ‘The Dip’, in front of it. The whole area was crammed with stalls and sideshows. Some of the entertainments were distinctly politically incorrect. There was a boxing booth where passers-by were encouraged to get a bloody nose, a so-called Freak Show (whatever happened to that bearded lady?), and scantily-clad dancing girls writhing on a small stage to the hit music of the time. I remember winning a cheap ring

for rifle-shooting. No health and safety officers around then! There were several ’fortune tellers’ in tents around the place, each one purporting to be a descendent of the famous Gypsy Lee. Strangely enough one of those exotically dressed women DID once give my mother a spookily correct reading of her palm, but that’s another story for another day! Romany gypsies would wend their way throughout the crowds with baskets of ’Lucky Heather’. My late stepgrandfather perfected a way of dismissing their unwanted attention. He would pretend he was French, and that he could not to understand what they were saying. We would all laugh as we heard the gypsies muttering profanities as they went on their way without making a sale! In post-war Britain we had very little money to spend, but there was always a penny or two to spare for candy-floss or toffee-apples. We would look forward to seeing a larger-than-life character on Derby Sunday (and also Derby Day, if we were lucky enough to get there), who was called Prince Monolulu. He would mingle with the crowds and pose for photographs everywhere he went. He was a well-known tipster on the racing scene for many years. He claimed to be a chief from an Abyssinian tribe, but in

reality he was born in the West Indies, and christened Peter Carl Mackay. He was a tall black man , dressed in flamboyant eccentric clothing, with huge feathers emanating from his head-dress. Her Majesty The Queen’s official birthday is celebrated this month, and is marked by the ritual of Trooping The Colour at Horseguards Parade in London. In a previous life I lived in Tolworth. My neighbour in an adjoining flat was Major Peter Parkes, who, at one time, led the military bands in that famous ceremony. He was a gifted clarinettist. He had a habit of practising his instrument in his bathroom - no doubt because of the excellent acoustics. (I sing in the shower for much the same reason, but with less impressive results ….). His bathroom adjoined our drawing room, and unfortunately he would trill away loudly late at night. I used to love military music before he moved in. There are only so many times you can listen to The Radetzky March before you have visions of winding a clarinet around a musician’s neck! It is hard to believe that The Queen has been reigning over us since June 1953. Her official birthday is as much of our culture as The Derby or The Boat Race. Let us hope that, like mother before her, she will be

with us for many years to come, and giving us another reason to revel in our Britishness. For many the month of June will be synonymous with Father’s Day, which falls on 16th of this month. This celebration hasn’t always existed. It was created by the Governor of Washington in 1910, but it wasn’t particularly observed until Mother’s Day officially came into being in America in 1972. With divorce being so commonplace nowadays, families come in all shapes and sizes, often meaning that fathers don’t always share their lives with their children. If you are a dad reading this, I hope your children spoil you rotten, whether or not you are part of a ‘traditional’ family. To you children out there - of all ages - I would say to you : Make a fuss of him - even if he DOES hog your X-Box or talks over the end of your jokes. When you were born no-one gave him a book entitled “How To Be A Father”. Perhaps when he does that embarrassing Dad Dance at parties, you wish they HAD! Be kind to him. He’s the only one you’ve got. To make the falafel, place the chick peas, garlic, parsley or coriander, spices and flour in a food processor and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Process for about 1 minute until you have a fairly smooth mixture. Turn into a bowl then divide and shape the mixture into 12 small patties with clean wetted hands. Shallow fry the patties in hot oil for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Meanwhile, place the sliced peppers on a foil-lined grill pan and drizzle over the olive oil. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side until tender and lightly charred in places. Toss together the salad leaves and shredded iceberg lettuce. Arrange on four plates with the grilled peppers. Halve the hot falafel then add to the salad and top with roughly crumbled goats’ cheese. To make the dressing, place all the ingredients in a screw-topped jar and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and serve immediately. Tip Add a handful of fruity black or green olives to the salad or sprinkle with some lightly toasted pine nuts to give an extra Mediterranean flavour. WPLife

Charity

begins at home

Etheveryone believes statement

“Charity begins at home” but do we really mean in our own home? Do we mean our community? Do we mean our village, town or city? No matter our definition of this statement we all believe in helping others and feeling good about it. Sarah is 7 years old and has just learned her dad is not coming home ever again. Whilst he was serving in the Armed Forces, protecting those whose freedoms and country was under attack, her dad was killed. Sarah’s family will need support in coping with their loss. Jordan’s dad serves in the Armed Forces. He has not seen his dad for 2 years. Now he knows his dad is coming home in the next few weeks. His dad will need help to

resettle into civilian life, return to work or start his own business. The Royal British Legion has since 1921 helped those in the Armed Forces and their families, supporting exservicemen and women and those currently serving on active duty. Volunteers Required Feel good about yourself and what you do. Come and help us continue the support we offer to the ex-servicemen and women, their families and those currently on active duty within the Armed Forces. You do not need to have a connection with the armed forces to volunteer for The Royal British Legion. All you need is a desire to help those who really need it most. The Better Life Mr Green in the Conservatory

A leaky, uninsulated porch is a friend to no one. But a demolished porch replaced by a mini-conservatory =

firewood + bricks + glass for cold frames + indoor space for more plants (especially welcome since our greenhouse had to go). “So what do you think?” Anne pointed to her makeshift plan on the kitchen table. I thought we could fit at least a dozen plants on the shelves, plus five trays of seedlings on the floor, and still be able to sit down. That humble pencil and paper outline was the beginning, but it was a long and fretful journey to the finished conservatory. Low points included our builders doing a two-week vanishing act, them breaking the lid on our chiminea on the first day, and failing to put up 90-degree angle walls - twice. The wood and glass conservatory, however, was - and is - spectacular. Mind you, someone else supplied it. And, once the floor was tiled and those tantalising shelves were slated, we were ready to go.

24

The cat was the first visitor to the conservatory and, to be honest, didn’t seem that impressed (although she didn’t know how much we’d borrowed to pay for it). Operation Hothouse went into action. We started with surprise tomato plants - in that they turned out to be a yellow variety - swiftly followed by Fasold green beans and Kennedy mange tout. The results were impressive, but top billing went to the California Wonder sweet peppers. Never having grown them before, I erred on the side of

excess and planted 16. The 12 that thrived also gave us ample camouflage from walkers who passed up the lane. As the peppers grew - and believe me, they grew a lot - we harvested, swapped and even froze a few (depipped and sliced first). And still they kept coming. On rare, hot days, the room smelt like a sweet pepper sauna. I became so convinced of the conservatory’s powers that I brought in the sweet potato plant, which was ailing. It rallied a little, but when it came to harvest time I felt that the label’s bumper crop guaranteed had overstated the case. Seven sweet potatoes might be good for one plant, but not if they’re all the size of a 20p piece. Naturally, we need to water everything regularly and employ judicious temperature control with the windows. Which also means that flies and wasps are frequent visitors. But hey, that’s nature for you. And it’s a dinner guest or two for the spiders, which moved in almost immediately. Going forward, we want to reduce volume and increase variety (because even home-grown peppers can become a little samey). Chilli peppers are next - I’d love to grow Bhut Jolokia - reputed to be the world’s hottest chillies. Anne is a tomatophile (I like the plants, but can’t stand the taste of the fruit), so we’ll definitely look a mixture of plentiful and interesting. The conservatory has already been nursemaid to a range of herbs and seedlings. It’s not only an extension of the house, but also an extension of our lifestyle. Anne would like more space to sit down in comfort. Or, at the very least, be able to find the cat among the indoor undergrowth. By Derek Thompson WPLife

View from the City Tax & Recovery?

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

London taxes No not black cabs, but rather a thought from our Mayor Boris that London needs more taxes to pay for its burgeoning costs of growth and more to the point redevelopment of its grand but ageing infrastructure. The thought would be that London could have transferred to it revenue raising powers potentially of more than £12bn – which to put into proportion, is about 12% of the national amount raised for VAT. Apparently this is part of a more radical development to try and transfer more powers to the regional cities to allow them greater local control and the ability to raise their own debt. Now hang on – there is nothing new about this. I remember in days gone by a certain Mrs Thatcher stamping out the ability of local authorities to raise debt and forcing those same local authorities to get it under control. The local authority bonds always used to be a regular holding in old portfolios as almost junior gilts paying quite a healthy yield. Mrs T saw these funds though as a means of propping up inefficient small local authorities unable to get any of the benefits of scale. The taxes now envisaged could include a tourism tax - great in theory to pay for better tourism facilities but actually I have never found that paying more tax has been a great major pull to attract more tourists. Inevitably this is going to mean the weight of tax falling on residents and businesses. Boris needs to be careful not to push business away. What could be more appealing though is the greater emphasis being put on allowing borrowing for the increased provision of house building. This is something which should be addressed not just in London but throughout the nation as a strategic investment in the future. All Time Highs. My CIO Chris Derbyshire quite rightly reminded me of just quite how far we have come in a mere five years

in the equity markets. From the nadir and “slough of despond” of 2009, UK blue-chip shares have risen 116%, including reinvestment of dividends and US blue-chips have risen some 161%. Even in the much maligned euro zone, the German Dax index has passed its all time high last week. So is this a sign that all is fine and dandy and that we can at last relax? Well in investment markets I don’t believe you can ever relax – remember the mantra of the Buffett here – buy when others are nervous and sell when others are complacent. Well I don’t think we have reached complacency yet but certainly there has been a level of relief that the global economy, whilst not exactly in fine fettle is at least healing from its financial heart attack. When looking at companies though, Chris makes a good point when he says there may be a simple explanation: more buyers than sellers. “ Normally, in a deep and long-lasting recession, companies struggle to stay in business and have to ask their shareholders for more capital. This increases the supply of shares and should, all else being equal, reduce the price. Since the credit crunch, however, and partly due to low interest payments, many large companies have actually been flush with cash and able

companies have actually been flush with cash and able to buy back their own shares. ” So less stock more cash? The chart below shows the difference in the value of shares issued by US companies and shares bought back by US companies. Over the past five years, US companies have bought back $1.5 trillion more in stock than has been issued. Representing about 12% of the average value of the entire US stock market. Additionally, when we look at the outlook for earnings then confidence for companies on the main indices is certainly increasing. The change comes when the outlook becomes murkier and whilst there is still quite a lot of murk around, at least you can see where the money is being made. Behind this though we must remember that all of this has been supported by the financial heroin of QE which has been the fuel for our all time highs – thus time to also recall that following QE heroin, we will in time also suffer QE cold turkey. However this will not happen in the short term. A usterity to Growth? As the G7 met last weekend the words seem to change emphasis from just austerity into something more encouraging. Certainly with a little more confidence from our leaders, the UK could see some improvements later this year. For example take a look at Spain’s exports being up (not just my consumption of Rioja) and a current account balance recovering from -10% in 2007 to around zero today and we can see some better figures. Additionally the “re-shoring” I have been talking about is certainly adding greater numbers to the manufacturing workforce and in some surprising areas. Not just the fashionable west coast but the old “rust belt” from Michigan to Tennessee is also attracting a number of new recruits with 123,000 jobs filled in the Source: BCA Research

Bugs and Beasties by Pippa Greenwood B ugs and beasties are really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year?

Aphids Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary. - Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or a soap or plant oil based insecticide - Use biological controls – they’re totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues - Use a strong jet of water to blast the aphids off plants, but do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damage Caterpillars Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables. - Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning. - Spray with a suitable contact insecticide or better still use the Nemasys Caterpillar biological control. - Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create particularly safe shelters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to actually reach them so hand picking or squashing is often the best answer. - Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh. Woodlice Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarely responsible as they simply do not have adequately strong mouthparts. They can cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they have caused the initial damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures. Earwigs Earwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted Expert local flowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. The care bamboo cane

38

and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis. Mildew Powdery mildew is also a problem at this time of year; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds and sometimes even petals with a white floury deposit. Sometimes the mildew can also prevent fruits from swelling normally, cause the leaves to become distorted and even fall early. Prompt action is essential and if you wish you can use a proprietary fungicide but check the label carefully for suitability. Keep the damage to a minimum in the first instance by ensuring that the plants are kept well watered. In addition try to ensure a good flow of air around the plants. A bit of careful pruning or weeding often helps too. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com where you can sign up for Pippa’s free newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh, Envirofleece and a hand-picked selection of garden products WPLife

Events

She died for women One hundred years ago in June 1913, amid the carnival spirit of Derby Day and in the presence of King George V and Queen Mary, a militant suffragette named Emily Wilding Davison sacrificed her life for the cause of women’s human rights. The coroner recorded Misadventure but was it an intentional sacrifice? Weigh the evidence for yourself at the exhibition – Dying for the Vote.

The Suffragettes Throughout the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century, successive male governments chose to repress women’s claim to human rights. Most men interpreted ‘the woman question’ in the light of their own prejudiced period. In 1903, despairing of the political stalemate on women’s rights, Emmeline Pankhurst formed the militant Women’s Social and Political Union. Deputations of voteless women who tried to communicate with the Prime Minister on the issue were convicted of ‘obstructing the police’ and jailed as common criminals. In 1909 imprisoned Surrey artist Marion Wallace Dunlop went on hunger-strike for political prisoner status. In order to avoid the responsibility of having suffragettes die in prison, the government introduced the torture of forcible feeding. Men like Frederick Pethick-Lawrence (1871-1961) of Dorking supported the women in their struggle. As a result he was imprisoned and brutally force-fed like the women, then declared bankrupt.

Emily’s urgent message to the King Emily was fatally injured during the running of the Derby in an attempt to send a message to King George V that his female subjects were being repressed past endurance by government. Her intention was to run on the track and wave the flag of the militant Women’s Social and Political Union in front of newsreel cameras. Tragically, Emily collided with the king’s horse, Anmer.

A Call to the Nation But the women’s cause was still ignored. Women like Emily Davison tried acts of violence as a wake-up call to the nation. Emily set fire to a pillar-box, gave herself up to police, and was sentenced to six months in Holloway Prison where she went on hunger-strike and was force fed. Emily Davison came from a large and resourceful family that originated in Northumberland. She had been

awarded a first class honours pass from Oxford University. This was at a time when women were denied degrees at universities, limiting employment prospects. Emily persevered to obtain a degree from London University, the first to award degrees to women. In company with many others who joined the Women’s Social and Political Union, Emily Davison saw the right to vote in Parliamentary elections not as an end in itself, but as a gateway through which women could influence the fair funding of facilities such as maternity and child care, or help for widows. Equal opportunity in the workplace was high on the agenda, as was gender-based legal and moral reform. In 1913, WSPU leader Emmeline Pankhurst, in her fifties, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Since she was pledged to hunger-strike, there seemed no end in view but her early death. This lent urgency to Emily Davison’s message to the King at the one place and time when he was accessible to the public – at the Derby. Tragedy strikes On Derby Day, 4th June 1913, Emily Davison was forty and athletic although worn down by forcible feeding. She

was a keen cyclist and early in her career had turned down an opportunity to swim professionally. She may have felt confident she could dart across the path of oncoming horses to the other side of the racetrack safely. If so, she tragically misjudged. Flying hooves struck her head. Emily died four days later, without regaining consciousness, in Epsom Cottage Hospital. Although the WSPU accorded Emily a martyr’s funeral, her death accomplished little politically. It took the First World War, in which women proved their loyalty alongside their men, to set in motion true democracy. Voting rights for British women on the same terms as men were granted finally in 1928. Until27 July this year, Epsom & Ewell commemorates the death of Emily Davison (1872-1913), and the cause for which she died, with a pivotal exhibition guest curator Irene Cockroft at the Borough Museum at Bourne Hall Community Centre, Spring Street, Ewell, Surrey KT17 1UF. Please visit between 9am and 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Free entry to exhibition; parking available; easy access by bus or train (Ewell West Station); telephone 020 8394 1734; www.epsom-ewell.gov.uk.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

Tof Spring he tadpoles hatched, cold weather and late signs notwithstanding, and the water is now

teeming with life, as I write this in mid May. By the time you read it, some small froglets will have left the pond and hidden themselves in the vegetation around and beyond it. Frogs do not spend most of their lives in water, but in shady, damp places on land. If you see a frog in a patch of long grass, please do NOT pick it up and take it to water. If you find injured wildlife, you should consult a wildlife rescue organisation for advice. Around the pond area in Shadbolt Park we are creating small habitats to increase biodiversity. This includes patches of rough grass, nettles, brambles, ivy, hedges, dead wood piles and compost heaps. We will leave all the native plants in the wilderness area to set seed for the birds in late Summer and Autumn. One regular job is the unglamourous one of picking up litter, which can be dangerous to many small animals, who get trapped and entangled in plastic

and twisted wire or cans. Hedgehogs are regularly and seriously injured by litter every year, all over the UK. As they are in steep decline, this is a tragic extra and totally unnecessary pressure on them. The Wider Environment Our work in Shadbolt Park reminds us contiunually of the need to make space for wildlife alongside us in towns and suburbs. PEople have moved into their territories and, all too often, destroyed or depleted them. Our gardens could be a kind of linear woodland, if we made them so, by planting hedges and trees along the boundaries. Schools, churchyards and parks, with more space, could create copses and meadows, if the landowners could be persuaded to do so. And we need many more ponds, anywhere they can be created, small and large. Ponds are simply the best habitat you can offer to wildlife. Where there is water, there will be abundant life. Kew Gardens has recently launched a Breathing Planet Campaign. Its aims are: to bank and share the

People can support this initiative in a number of ways - by giving to the Kew fund, becoming a Friend of Kew, sponsoring a bench for someone they love, contributing to the upkeep of a favourite tree in the Gardens or saving a species at the Millennium Seed Bank. On the south facing wall of the Victoria Plaza shop at Kew there are several leaf-shaped wooden panels carved with the names of those who have so far donated to the Breathing Planet Campaign.

Conserving plants is probably the single most effective way to preserve wild habitats. The disappearance of just one plant may have huge and unforeseen disastrous consequences on a whole ecosystem. And many of us are well aware of the drastic situation that use of pesticides and weedkillers has created for pollinating insects, especially honey bees. Alone, as one caring individual, we may feel we cannot do that much, but together, we can achieve a great deal - I will always believe that. So, take a trip to Kew Gardens this Summer and then, inspired by your visit, do just that little bit more for the wildlife on your doorstep. Thank you. WPLife

Techno Blog High Street Hi-fi – Dead or Alive? P erhaps I’m being a little over dramatic with the title, but given the amount of column inches and discussion

that has taken place on the subject, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Unilet’s fate had already been sealed, and along with the Dodo, the dinosaurs and long hot summers, we would soon simply become another “Whatever happened to ...” footnote in history. I want to show that Unilet is still relevant in 2013, and beyond. We’re not unique; other shops such as Infidelity, Graham’s Hi Fi, Billy Vee, Oranges & Lemons and the like have Keith confirms that reports of the death of the hi-fi specialist have been greatly exaggerated. been occupying the same ground for many years However, retail hi-fi stores have undoubtedly dwindled recently, begging the question, why ? Is it where we are, who we are, what we sell, how we sell it, or is it simply the elephant in the room- Price?

The internet is widely blamed for the demise of the high street shops, based on the assumption that price is the one and only factor the public consider. If that were the case, I suspect none of the above establishments, including ourselves would have much of a future. However, we continue to survive and whilst independent shops will always try to be competitive with pricing, we’ll never be the cheapest. So, how can we ensure our future and more to the point, do you think we have a future which is relevant to you? I think the most lucid comment on the High Street came from one of the senior managers of Curry’s Digital, who said that “the buying public want the right product at the right price, regardless of where they buy it from.” A simple enough statement on the face of it, but if for a moment we take 45 17217 Brandmakers Unilet The Volume 35-76.indd 45 30/04/2013 15:15 price out of the equation, this leaves us with “the right product” Having decided that you’re going to buy something, is the first thing you think of actually its price, or is it its size, colour, shape, quality, desirability etc. then price? Which leads us neatly onto Value! It’s often been said that some people know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. customers have come into us with price supposedly at the top of their list of priorities, only to relegate it down the list after speaking to us. They realise that other values are indeed, more important. The other long term consequence of the public buying solely on price is the effect on both the general quality of goods and a company’s ability to support their products many years after it has ceased production of it. More products are being built to a price, not a standard, which slowly, but inevitably reduces overall quality despite improvements in technology and manufacturing techniques. Companies are then also forced to keep fewer spare parts for a shorter period so when you take your beloved item to get it repaired, don’t be surprised if the phrase “Parts No Longer Available” becomes more common. Of course, if we take the pricing analogy to its logical conclusion, then the only way of shopping in the future will be either by phone or sitting in front of a computer- where’s the fun in that ! Do we really want a situation where you can’t drive a car, look at a Plasma 46 One of the advantages that independents like Unilet have, is showing you that everything you buy has a value to you other than its monetary value. When you buy food, its real value is to keep you alive and well and sometimes provide you with real pleasure. When you buy a new washing machine, its real value is to provide clean clothing and free up time for you to do other things. When you buy Hi-Fi or Home Cinema products, their real value to you is to stimulate both your eyes and your ears, again in the pursuit of pleasure. These “real” values tend

to be taken for granted until they are denied to you. I’ve lost count how many times 17217 Brandmakers Unilet The Volume 35-76.indd 46 30/04/2013 15:15 TV, listen to a Hi-Fi, squeeze a piece of fruit, try on a piece of clothing etc., before making that decision to buy? Even with distress items such as cookers and the like, the ability to look at, feel and touch a product is invaluable in helping you decide its real value to you and this can normally be done only in-store at places such as...... you guessed it, Unilet! If all of the above sounds like gently veiled dig at the buying public in general, then I make no apologies for it. In my 38 or so years in and out of retailing, the whole buying process has changed in many ways, but there are certain things that remain constant. To use a phrase coined by, I believe, Levi Jeans, “Quality never goes out of style” and I believe this still to be the case, whether talking about products or services. Unilet provides both in abundance. This is why we survive. We don’t look only at the short term on behalf of our customers, but continue to take the longer view when discussing/ showing/ demonstrating a product’s value to them other than its price. As the man from Curry’s Digital stated, “the right product at the right price” Our future is still in your hands, so what do you value most? You decide!. I’ll go and lie down now. Keith

Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving

Looking After Each Other - Neighbourhood Watch Everyone who reads my monthly article will know that they will always get good crime prevention advice and news on what has been happening locally. But there is only so much information I can supply by this means. We all like to be aware of what is happening in our area, current crime trends, crime statistics and news of the great results that are achieved by the regular liaison between the police and the public, in particular ‘Neighbourhood Watch’. The Metropolitan Police have realised for some time now the positive aspects of a solid Neighbourhood Watch network. The Worcester Park Safer Neighbourhood Team realise this also and I would like to draw your attention to the benefits of being part of your local Neighbourhood Watch network. Neighbourhood Watch is an alliance of people coming together to make their communities safer and better places to live. It aims to help people protect themselves and their properties and reduce the fear of crime by means of improved home security, greater vigilance, accurate reporting of suspicious incidents to the police and by fostering a community spirit. The police can’t deal with the problems and issues arising from crime and anti-social behaviour alone; they need the help of the whole community. Neighbourhood Watch provides a way for local people to play an important part in making it happen. Neighbourhood Watch is a community initiative, supported by the police, not run by them, so success depends on what the members make of it. Although independent, it works in partnership with the police, residents associations, local authorities and other agencies to reduce crime and disorder. Originally the basic purpose was to reduce household burglary, but more recently they are tackling other things that affect people’s quality of life such as, rogue traders & scammers, poor street lighting, dumped cars, fly tipping, graffiti and anti-social behaviour. Membership is growing rapidly and most people joining now are of a younger age group and different ethnic origins, so that increasingly the membership more accurately reflects the population of the borough. How It Works Some people can spare some time to help run their Watch. Some may simply want to support Neighbourhood Watch as a member. Every member is valuable and important in making the community safer - as long as they are committed and enthusiastic about getting things done. MEMBERSHIP Being a member of Neighbourhood Watch means being a good neighbour and caring about the local area. It needn’t cost anything, except a little common sense and being

aware. It doesn’t mean interfering in other people’s business; just your neighbours looking out for you, your family, your home and your street or estate, and you doing the same for them. Members do whatever they can to make their neighbourhood safer and give support to the coordinator as they are able. Members are asked to report anything that seems suspicious or unusual to the police. Some things you see may help the police solve or prevent a crime - and so stop someone becoming a victim. So, if you are suspicious about something, make a note of what you have seen and pass the information to the police. Contact your Safer Neighbourhood team, or in an emergency dial 999 in the usual way. Let the police check it out and NEVER challenge someone who is behaving suspiciously or put yourself at risk. You will never be criticised for making a 999 call in good faith. The Co-Ordinator The role of Co-ordinator need not take up much time or be difficult or demanding. Primarily, the Co-ordinator passes on information and advice and keeps an eye on any vulnerable neighbours, keeps a note of incidents and passes them on to the local Safer Neighbourhood Team and encourages neighbours to be vigilant at all times, to report anything suspicious and to protect themselves and their properties. So, Member or Co-ordinator? The choice is yours. Take action and join today, it’s free and as most insurance companies give a discount to members, don’t forget to tell your home insurer if you join. Please detach this page, complete the form on the back and send to the address shown. If you live outside the London Borough of Sutton, please contact your local police who will be able to give you your local Neighbourhood Watch contact details.
