Following a hugely successful first few months,

the You Are Here pop-up shop at 44 Central Road, Worcester Park continues to expand, offering more activities for local residents to get involved and more opportunities for new business ideas. You Are Here is a community focused project being run by Meanwhile Space in partnership with Sutton Council and is funded by the Outer London Fund. Worcester Park History Stamps for the colonies, scenery for the princesses This month we continue our

look at the area around The Manor Drive, developed by Lavender and Farrell in 1930s. Our illustrations this month, kindly provided by Charlie from Highdown in response to my piece last time, show part of a Lavender and Farrell leaflet promoting this estate. The names of most of the roads on the estate keep alive the traditional names of the fields on which it was built. The Hollands runs almost exactly across a field known by that name as far back as 1627. Down Field was one of the common fields, in which small strips were allocated to various villagers, and it extended over much of the area now covered by The Manor Drive and Leyfield. Two of the ‘shots’ or divisions of this are shown as Upper and Lower High Down Shot on the 1627 map held at Merton College, and covered much of what is now Highdown. The name Lady Hay has moved a little further, having been associated since the 17th century with a field on the south-east side of Church Road, between the Parochial School and the Vicarage. Considering that the ‘Manor’ name has become almost synonymous with this estate, it comes as a surprise to find that Lavender and Farrell only suggested this name, in October 1930, after the council had turned down their initial suggestions of Park Mead and Parkside. They also originally put forward the name Perry How for what became Leyfield, presumably being unaware that other developers nearby were using this name. They withdrew their suggestion of Greenway in favour of The Hollands, and it was only when the council’s Engineer suggested following this up with Dutch Road and Netherlands Avenue that they explained the source of the names as being on a map shown to them by the College. Many of the new residents were commuters, working in financial or legal offices in London, or in public administration: Tom Tandy recalls that Lavender and Farrell was one of the firms recommended to civil

servants and local government officers who wanted to move out of London, and remembers discovering at a public meeting after the war that the estate had been able to muster four town clerks and four solicitors. Among the bank officials on the estate was (Sir) Leslie O’Brien (later Baron O’Brien of Lothbury), who joined the Bank of England as a clerk in 1927, and after his marriage in 1932 settled at 67 Highdown. He rose quickly, being recognised as one of the bank’s leading technicians, and as chief cashier from 1954 to 1962 he matured techniques for using bank rate as a means of monetary

management. Unusually for one who had risen through the ranks, he was appointed Governor in 1966, and “displayed the ability but none of the docility predicted by Treasury officials” as he sought to ensure a stable monetary policy in the difficult years until his retirement in 1973. John Rowe recalls some of the more unusual occupations followed by the first residents: John Merrylees (51 Highdown) “was a commercial artist. When the Queen and Princess Margaret were young, they used to do a Christmas pantomime every year at Windsor Castle, and he used to go and paint the scenery for them.” Ernest Jackman (45 Highdown) worked for Bradbury Wilkinson, the stamp and banknote printers at Shannon Corner, between New Malden and Raynes Park: “He designed stamps for the colonies. He used to paint the originals actual size; he’d use a paint brush with one hair.” Dorothy

West, another former employee, recalls that Bradbury Wilkinson employed a significant number of Worcester Park residents: the firm had been founded in London in 1856, and moved to New Malden in 1919 (it was taken over by rivals De La Rue in 1986, and the New Malden premises were closed in 1990 and redeveloped by Tesco). I am hoping to write more on a future occasion about Worcester Park’s connection with Bradbury Wilkinson, and would be very pleased to hear from any local people who worked for the firm and would be willing to share with me some of their memories. Clean up the eyesore please! Local people in Worcester Park are coming

together to try and get the graffiti removed from The Worcester Park Rail bridge. The bridge has been an eyesore at the heart of Worcester Park for at least a decade now. The facebook page, created to drum up support, now has the support of 100 local people and is growing all the time. So far attempts to persuade Network Rail to resolve this issue has fallen on deaf ears, so the group are asking local people to email Network Rail Chief Executive, David Higgins directly on david.higgins@networkrail. co.uk to try and gain his attention and force Network Rail to take some action.

Ruth Jemmett Writes A new year - a new you? R uth Jemmett discusses how we can improve our lives in 2013

It’s that time of year when we are full of good intentions, and thoughts of new resolutions for the months ahead fill our minds. If 2012 was a happy time for us, all well and good, but if it wasn’t all that we had hoped it would be, perhaps we are

glad to see the back of it. Even though the slicing up of the seasons into months and years is a manmade concept, the sound of Big Ben chiming in a new year invariably gives us optimistic thoughts of moving forward to a better tomorrow - and, hopefully creating an improved version of ourselves. Lists headed ‘Things To Do’ can be both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand they can give us the illusion of putting our brains in order (some hope in my case!) but on the other hand they can make us horribly aware of how little time we have in our lives to do all the things we have to do - or want to do. Oh, how that messy garage is haunting me! Instead of setting ourselves impossible tasks that we know we will never complete in the year ahead, perhaps we can aim to be more realistic, and take baby steps instead of giant leaps towards our goals. For instance, how many people resolve to lose two stone in weight just after Christmas? Instead of living on lettuce leaves for the first week of January, and then giving into gluttony by pigging out on four bacon butties, two bags of greasy chips and a jumbo bar of chocolate, perhaps we could be more realistic. Crash diets never work. We are much more likely to lose weight healthily if we try and have a varied, balanced diet - but merely eat less of everything. Just cutting out one slice of bread a day will equal about 25 loaves in a year - about the equivalent of those saddlebags you have been trying to squeeze into your jeans! With a bit of careful planning you should just about be able to fit into that bikini in the summer. (No - not you sir ………). Faddy New Year diets usually go hand-in-hand with failing to honour your gym membership. Why waste money on wrestling with hi-tech equipment, whilst surrounded by sylph-like nymphets who sneer at your bingo-wings, when you could get yourself in trim just as easily by walking briskly for an hour each day or do window-cleaning or gardening with gusto? If domestic chores seem to be a boring way to improve your figure, offer to take someone’s dog for a walk around the streets

of Worcester Park. A Great Dane dragging you up a hill will have you whippet-fit in no time! Short grey wintry days can make the most positive of us feel as if all we want to do is curl up in front of the telly, but why let the weather make you waste precious moments in which you could be indulging in a new hobby or socialising more? (You know what they say: Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans…..). Take up dancing - or indoor bowling - and make new friends at the same time. If you have the winter blues - or even full-blown Seasonal Affective Disorder - life really is what you make it. No-one is ever going to arrive at your door bearing a box with the word ‘Happiness’ on its label. We all have the capacity to indulge in the Poor-Me Syndrome when the pipes are freezing and our noses are running, but in our lowest moments we should remember how lucky we are to live in Worcester Park. If we are in relatively good health and are fortunate enough to have family or friends around us, we should count our blessings - and DO something. People on their deathbeds never say “I wish I had done less”. This is the time of year when we are surrounded by a whole range of bugs that can make us feel low in

mind and body. Scientists recently discovered that approximately 80% of the viruses that we suffer from are mainly acquired from poor personal hygiene - particularly lack of hand-washing. We can go a long way to keeping ourselves in fine fettle for the new year by simply remembering to use a bit of soap and water, particularly when we have been giving lots of festive handshakes to everyone. There is a happy medium regarding keeping clean of course. The late American multi-millionaire Howard Hughes, apparently had a penchant for walking about with his feet wedged in tissue boxes so that he wouldn’t pick any germs up from the floor. I don’t know what he had against slippers! My husband has a penchant for walking around in socks, leaving little bits of black fluff everywhere. If he were an eccentric multi-millionaire too, it might not seem such a bad habit. On the plus side he’s a whizz-kid at doing shopping, so perhaps I shouldn’t complain! We always assume that loneliness is the province of mainly elderly people, and we sometimes forget that younger people, who might be either disabled - or even painfully shy - also appreciate the reaching out of a friendly hand, and can feel particularly cut off from the rest of the world in winter. Don’t forget that to HAVE a friend you have to BE a friend. Simple acts of kindness - like lifting a ‘phone on a chilly miserable day, to say “How are you?” can sometimes transform people’s lives, and pave the way to a happier year for both of you. Some people reading this won’t be looking forward

to a new year because of illness or bereavement. In such circumstances it can sometimes be difficult to look hopefully ahead. With such worries to contend with it usually easier to take one day at a time, and to try and take pleasure in the small things in life. I sometimes look at the wonderful variety of birds that visit my garden, and muse on the fact that they have no concept of the passing of the years. They live for the moment - and enjoy their comparatively short life-spans, whilst soaring over suburbia without a care in the world. We humans spend so much time fretting about the future that we sometimes lose sight of the present. Of course we want to plan ahead. It’s only natural. But, sometimes in our efforts to achieve our targets we forget to literally stop and smell the roses. We often catch ourselves saying “Ah yes - I was happy THEN ….”. Perhaps we should slow our lives down a little and appreciate the moment we are IN. As the poet William Henry Davies said “What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?” Although it is natural to look forward to the coming year - with all its joys and woes - let us not lose sight of the fact that each day we are blessed with is a gift, and we should savour each one. We should endeavour to care for ourselves and those around us around us in the best way that we can, without taking each precious moment granted. Fandormed to protect and develop the existing Park Mansion as a local amenity, the Friends of Nonsuch have managed to do just that in the past twenty-one years. The purpose of the original involvement was to prevent the Mansion becoming the 19th hole of a Golf Course and the consequent restriction on the

use of the Park for the local inhabitants. The Friends funded the original survey which unveiled a Grade 2 historic building. After 21 years of volunteer work and renovation the public now has the opportunity of visiting the recreated Dairy, Sculleries, Kitchen, Larders of the Mansion together with an exhibition of rare English hand-painted and antique European stained glass covering a period of 400 years. Regular events take place in the Nonsuch Palace Gallery where there is a bookstall and shop. The Friends also funded a wonderful model of the original Tudor Nonsuch Palace built by Henry VIII. Friends of Nonsuch volunteers will enable the model to be on view in the Nonsuch Palace Gallery on the following dates for January and February 2013. Stress is the term used to describe our physical, mental and emotional reactions to what is happening in our lives. It is a perfectly natural reaction and was a vital response for our forebearers when faced with a fight or flight situation. Types of stress Stress - when handled in the right way - can be good for us: it enables us to take on challenges, face fears and step outside our comfort zone. We also actively seek out that adrenaline rush when doing extreme sports, playing video games or watching horror movies. But too much stress on a daily basis may lead to you finding it hard to cope - like half a million people in the UK every year who report experiencing work-related stress. As a result, you may find it difficult to concentrate or to make decisions. yourself some quiet time to relax can really help. Use the time to read or listen to music or try a relaxation technique for 20 minutes: close your eyes, breathing slowly and deeply. Think about which muscles are tense and try to relax them, imagining the tension just easing away. Focus on each part of your body in turn, starting with your feet and moving up through your body to the top of your head. You could also try a yoga or relaxation class to help relieve stress or go for regular walks at lunchtime. Tackling stress It may sound simple, but have you actually looked at exactly what is causing you stress and how you may be able to change the situation? If a person at work is causing you problems, can you discuss it with them or someone else? If you have too much work, can you find some help or ask a colleague to share the load? If you’ve said ‘yes’ to too many things, are there some you can say ‘no’ to? However much pressure you are under, try to take regular breaks to remove yourself from the cycle. Try to be well-organised - many situations look better when you know exactly what it is you have to deal with, rather than worrying about it. Find as much help as you can - whether it’s in the home or at work, so that you are sharing the load - and talk to friends, family or colleagues so you don’t feel that you are coping alone.

View from the City Beware flying brics

P robably the best investment marketing acronym of the past

decade has to be the term BRIC or more recently BRICS with the addition of the S. As I am sure you know, this fashionable term stands for Brazil, Russia, India and China, and most recently South Africa managed to tack itself onto the end as well. These countries were quite rightly being heralded as the next breakthrough nations and since the end of the developing nation crisis roughly in 2002, they have seen their economies burgeon in a dramatic manner. However, as all investors know, no investment or economic line continues on a constant growth trajectory. The growth stories with these nations were superb, and thus many considered that maybe it could be different this time and that such growth could continue unabated.

Well, as ever, it’s not different this time - the world has changed and all members of the BRICS economies have to adapt to a new environment. China has its new leadership and some key issues to address – primarily having to face a long-term shift away from an export-led economy towards a more domestically focused growth strategy. Compound that issue with an uncertain and somewhat opaque financial structure and add that to China’s aging population and a smaller youth base and the future is by no means as clear and certain as it looked a decade ago. Then look at Brazil, which under the guidance of the socialist President Lula, changed the international face of the country from a ‘sleeping giant’ with unreliable politicians, to a far more stable and steady developing nation. Sensible public finances and a flexible exchange rate boosted confidence levels among foreign investors not seen since the days of colonialism. However, most recently growth has fallen away and the change in leadership has led to a more domestically focused business attitude and discouraged inbound investors preferring to partner with more expensive and less efficient domestic suppliers. A classic example of this has been Petrobras which is a fast developing oil producer and should be adding to the strength of the economy, but instead has shown inefficiencies and cracks in recent times.

Now Russia. Surely a country with such huge resources means that its economic strength has to be assured, especially with a ‘firm’ centrally controlled government keeping a close eye on apparently just about everything! In the past, the almost endemic corruption scared foreign investors off – and realistically, the backhanders will not have stopped. The return of Mr Putin is also unlikely to instill a sense of political progress and change. Nevertheless, the current account is in surplus, Russia has a roughly balanced budget, and some of the largest oil and gas producers in the world are very cheap compared to elsewhere. The problems with Russia as a place to invest are still very apparent – there is a reason it is still an emerging market – but these very problems also lead to some sectors looking very attractive. India runs itself in its own way and seems very different from the other BRICS members. Running a budget deficit rather than a surplus, this great country should be admired for being able to operate as the world’s largest democracy, but seems unable to shake off its pervasive inefficiencies of overbearing regulation, and chronic infrastructural challenges which were so appallingly illustrated with the wide power outages earlier in the year. Finally, let’s add South Africa to the list and here the well documented problems of mining companies often serve to cover some of the underlying economic tensions amongst the broader population. Although the legal structures and corruption are seen to be lower than the others, recent actions over the strikes and strikers have

done little to inspire confidence. So what can we draw from this changing picture? Firstly, fashionable marketing acronyms give little guidance for good investing, and in fact given the levels of corruption and sleaze in these nations, investors should take clear account of this when seeking homes for their investment monies. I would urge many investors who don’t have the access to reliable business news flow that they shouldn’t heedlessly take risks of direct investment into such unreliable areas - there are also opportunities to invest in the needs of those nations. The FTSE100 has many constituents which are in or from such areas, or at the very least carry substantial trade with them. You don’t have to take that level of risk yourself but probably use the expertise of those focusing on such areas to better understand the really valuable and feasible investments.

New Year, new you! Ifixt’ssoJanuary, and you are feeling in need of a quick you can begin to feel healthy again. But how

do you decide on a suitable exercise regime to help you lose weight and regain vitality? Working out at home with the help of a video console has become a popular alternative to going out to a dance class or a gym. The great advantage is that it allows you to design a programme to suit your own needs and preferences. However if - like me - you’re not a great self-motivator, you may find it hard to keep going without a human instructor to give encouragement. After several attempts to follow an aerobic routine in my lounge I made the decision to join a regular exercise class. A quick browse round the websites of local clubs brings up an array of exercise styles with exoticsounding names such as Zumba, Pilates, Ashtanga Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi. It’s nice to be spoiled for choice, but there are a few things to consider before you start. How old are you? Do you have any medical conditions? How much exercise do you normally take? If a leisurely stroll round the supermarket is your main form of exercise then a cardiovascular workout is probably not the place to start. You need to build your programme slowly, so you could begin with a beginners’ yoga class where you will be concentrating on breathing and stretching. If you are new to structured exercise you will be glad to know that yoga is about doing as much as you feel your own body can manage. Its emphasis on slow movements, posture and deep breathing really helps to build muscular strength and improve balance. There are a variety of different kinds of yoga, some of which are really quite challenging for a beginner, so do have a chat with the instructor before booking your course. Pilates borrows heavily from yoga and was originally devised to help injured dancers and athletes. Once again there is an emphasis on good posture and exercises are designed to strengthen the spine, improve circulation and open up the joints. As with Yoga you can look forward to a fantastic sense of release and revitalisation at the end of each class. However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. A fitness programme that is currently enjoying huge success in this country is Zumba. Invented by Columbian choreographer Alberto Perez in the 1990s, Zumba combines exercise with dance. Unlike

conventional dance classes where the instructor faces the class and teaches a series of steps, Zumba is a continuous series of free-flowing moves – the instructor stands with his or her back to the class, demonstrating actions for the students to follow. If you enjoy dancing to music then this is probably a good choice, but do think twice if your movement is restricted or if you suffer from high blood pressure. However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. After a few weeks you’ll be surprised to find how much better you feel, both physically and mentally. It may take a few attempts before you find a class that suits you, but it will be worth it in the end. Make sure the New Year really does mean a new you. By Claudia Leaf WPLife

of us will want to do is drink more wine, so I have a little suggestion. Why not bypass the pub and the hangover and have a bath in it instead. No, I haven’t lost my marbles, I’m talking about a new beauty craze sweeping the UK – vinotherapy wine spas! Legend has it that Cleopatra used to take a daily soak in a goat-milk bath or vats of red wine and spas all over the word have finally caught onto the trend. The Yunessun Spa in Hakune Japan has an outdoor pool over shadowed by a twelve-foot tall bottle of red wine which pours the liquid over it’s luxury seeking guests, while the worlds first wine spa in France, Les Sources De Caudalie offers hot red wine baths fitted with strategically designed jets to boost circulation. Here in the UK, the trend is being championed by The Vineyard at Stockcross. Just forty minutes outside of London and owned by Californian wine-maker Sir Peter Michael, this vineyard is perhaps better known for it’s 30,000 bottle cellar, but it is it’s five star hotel that is ticking all the beauty buff boxes with it’s “Grapetherapy package”. Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan I do think New Year’s resolutions can’t technically be expected to begin on New Year’s Day, don’t you? Since, because it’s an extension of New Year’s Eve, smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system. Also dieting on New Year’s Day isn’t a good idea as you can’t eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to ease your hangover. I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second. Helen Fielding Bridget Jones Diary I have to admit to finding New Year’s Eve a bit of a let down. It’s supposed to be the biggest night of the year – “tonight we’re going to party like its nineteen ninety nine” and all that. Was it only me whose teenage age years were spent trying to find a party, any party to go to? Now it means trying desperately to stay awake until midnight; fumbling with radio to find Big Ben’s chimes and succeeding, ten seconds to late and then being kept awake by all those fireworks (its not bonfire night for goodness sake!). As for Auld Langs Syne, does anyone, except Robert Burns, know the words let alone know what they mean? No, not even the Scots who supposedly own the patent on Hogmanay celebrations. Then there are those resolutions. Have you decided to make a New Year’s Resolution? If so, then you are in good company. Apparently seven millions of us make a New Year’s Resolution, with half of us making the same resolution every year (On average, we will fail in sticking to the same resolution a disappointing four times); the most popular ones being: 1) take more exercise (70% of resolutions); 2) lose weight and eat more healthily (60%); 3) cut down on alcohol (30%); 4) give up smoking (25%). Why do we bother? We all know how long it takes to break one - about the time it takes to top up the glass you used to toast the New Year (see 3.) but before you make the next resolution you know you will break – “never again”. (What is it about hangovers these days? They used to last until Football Focus, now they hang around until when its time for Match of The Day – and that’s the Sunday morning edition.) Why do we do so badly? Twenty five percent us break our New Years’ Resolutions within a week, although January

9th is apparently the day most people will give up. A study by the University of Hertford suggested that New Year’s resolutions doomed to failure as most people focus on downside of not achieving goals. Richard Wiseman, the psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire, who led the research, warns that making resolutions at the last minute can backfire because such decisions tend to be less genuinely motivated. “If you do it on the spur of the moment, it probably doesn’t mean that much to you and you won’t give it your all. People who kept their resolutions tended to have broken their goal into smaller steps and rewarded themselves when they achieved one of these. They also told their friends about their goals, focused on the benefits of success and kept a diary of their progress. Given my dismal personal failure of willpower in the face of the usual suspects, (see list above plus my own personal favourites - I will not be grumpy or shout at the kids) I’ve decided to resolve that this year I will not be making any resolutions. AI wasseareading of troubles recently about the plight of the world’s

oceans, and some lines from Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ popped into my head. Hamlet says to himself, as part of a long monologue which conveys well his inner struggle, these words:“Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and, by opposing, end them.” The seas are in peril as never before and need people to ‘take arms against’ the many threats to them. Overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction, coastal development, introduced species, climate change and ocean acidification to name just some of them. The more of us who speak up for their protection, the more likely it is that world governments will take notice. Which of us, when enjoying a beach holiday, ever really thinks about the life going on beneath the surface of the waves and how important the sea is to the health of our planet? Yet, the oceans provide us with food and oxygen and absorb vast quantities of carbon dioxide, protecting

us from the more dramatic climate change impacts. There are ecosystems as diverse and complex as the rainforests down there, and an underwater ‘Grand Canyon’ in the Irish Sea near the coast. This deep gorge was created 20,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. It is 13 miles long and 85 metres deep and is home to many amazing and bizarre life forms. Porpoises, dolphins, turtles and basking sharks travel huge distances in search of food and breeding grounds, so what happens in oceans many miles away may affect the animals which come to our shores. At the moment in the UK, only a tiny proportion of our coastal waters are protected. This is not enough by a long way to secure the future health and well being of the sea, and, through it, ourselves. It really is vitally important that we take action to reduce carbon emissions and pollution, and fish and mine the seas sustainably. We need a network of marine protected areas so that our oceans have a chance to recover from centuries of over exploitation and being used as a rubbish tip.

To end on a more positive note, the yellow fin tuna, which grows to 9 feet long, and is threatened by overfishing, has been helped to recover by the creation of a Marine Protection Area in the Eastern Pacific. The success of this venture demonstrates that protected areas work and are an encouragement to go on fighting to establish them. So here is a resolution for 2013 - to do more to fight for the health of our seas. WPLife Three years ago the Marine Act became law in England and Wales, but still there is little progress in establishing Marine Conservation Zones. Wales has 3 or 4 sites which will hopefully attain full protection in 2014. In England, Defra has been asked to consider 127 sites, but it is such slow progress, that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unlikely many will be designated this year. So the struggle continues and the oceans meanwhile, are still being plundered and spoiled by our thoughtless activities. Wrap up for winter by Pippa Greenwood W inter is upon us and even if you think that it can’t become any colder, the lowest temperatures are likely yet to come. Even hardy British plants will suffer in particularly miserable weather so whether your garden is already covered in snow and ice, or simply a slight frosting, it’s time to make sure that it’s wrapped up warm. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to winter damage as their roots are not protected beneath the soil. If the garden soil isn’t frozen solid, plunge any pot that can be plunged. If it’s too heavy to move then wrap it up well in bubble wrap polythene or old curtains. Most shrubs and trees in your garden will be ‘hardy’ in the UK, but if very harsh weather is forecast or there has been a spell of mild weather which may have encouraged the plant to produce some soft, new growth, then drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. A double fleece layer can of course be used on plants in beds and borders too. Weigh down the edges of the fleece well with bricks, or use metal pegs at intervals along its length. Larger individual plants in borders can be given good, individual protection if you use four sturdy canes to create a framework, wrap with netting or chicken wire and fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Many wall shrubs are grown there because they aren’t the hardiest of plants. To reduce risk of damage, make a similar ‘cage’ of mesh around these and again fill it with dry material so that the plant inside remains snug. Make sure you don’t use materials that can’t ‘breathe’ or the plants will deteriorate. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth. Deep mulch applied to the soil surface on the root area before the ground becomes frosted will help immensely. Even hardy fruit trees are prone to damage. Although quite tough, the newly opened blossom and the buds themselves may be damaged, with late frosts being most harmful because the buds are further developed. A fleece cover will help here too. If you live in a particularly cold area, buy them from a local specialist nursery who know local conditions and try to buy late flowering varieties. If your garden is windy, try investing in some fleecy jackets for your favourite shrubs. These are made from fleece and are like massive bags, complete with a drawstring at the open end. Alternatively use a double layer of ordinary fleece, wrap it around and cut to size before clipping or tying in place. Outdoor taps and pipework will need protection too or

could result in burst pipes and expensive bills. I suggest turning outside taps off at the mains, but if this isn’t feasible, make sure any exposed pipework is properly insulated. Your local builder’s merchant or DIY store is worth a visit for this job - well insulated pipes and garden taps could save you a fortune. Old Emanuel Rugby Club LRugby ots of things happening at Old Emanuel Club based at Shannon Corner between Yellow Box Storage and Golf Range. The club gained prestigious RFU Accreditation in 2012.

- Mini rugby, boys and girls up to 11 years old, - Junior rugby boys 12,13,14, - Junior rugby girls 11-15 years - Adult men 17 years to..whenever - Veterans Rugby..over 35s play occasionally - NEW Touch Rugby adult men and women 17 years to whenever Three adult men’s teams play in leagues most Saturday afternoon. Training is on Tuesdays & Thursdays 7.30pm until 9pm under superb floodlights. Many players come earlier to use the excellent weights gyms.

Sunday mornings see the children register at 1030am and train/play 11am. The Juniors may start later especially if they have league games at 1pm. All are welcome, and anyone can try before they join and pay any membership. The large clubhouse three full pitches and extra playing areas cater well for all. On Sunday mornings there are teas, coffees and bacon butties available for parents, and the bar opens at around noon. New. The club has been named as a Touch Rugby Centre for the area. Men and women with experience or not can come and play non-contact rugby on a fun/ social basis in a safe environment amongst friendly people. Sessions are currently on Thursday evenings under floodlights and Sunday afternoons when minis have finished. Changing rooms, showers, bar, and lots of friendly people. Some of the minis parents play, some coaches, some who have never touched a rugby ball before, and some who do not wish to play the contact game any more. Men and women into mixed teams. Occasional games against other clubs, and lots of fun. It will run through the summer too. We are here to take care of crime issues in Worcester Park and, although Worcester Park is one of the safest wards, in one of the safest boroughs in the Metropolitan Police area, crime can happen anywhere and with your assistance, we can prevent it happening in your ward. If you ever notice something is not quite right, strange goings on across the street, or untypical comings and goings next door, it could mean absolutely nothing but it may be worth keeping an eye on any patterns that emerge. For instance: 1. Has the property been available to let recently? 2. Do the curtains appear to be closed all the time or screens pulled down? 3. Is there condensation on the windows? 4. Do unknown people attend the address regularly and stay only for a limited time? 5. If next door, is the internal connecting wall unusually warm? 6. If you can view the rear of the property, are there bags of potting compost piling up either in the compost bags or bin liners? 7. Are there flower pots lying around, empty, or with compacted soil in them? 8. Can you detect a herbal type smell? 9. Have you noticed a dull humming sound (Fans perhaps being used for ventilation). These are all signs that the property in question may be used to cultivate Cannabis. If this were the case, every scrap of information that you could supply would be very useful to us eg, descriptions of people and vehicles, dates and times etc. The only thing we ask is, don’t do anything that might draw attention to yourself. If you cannot jot down a car registration without being noticed, then DON’T DO IT. Always consider your safety

and anonymity before anything else. If you do have any information for us there are several ways in which you can contact us, in confidence and with confidence.
