Editor’s letter As you’ll have gathered form the not-sosubtle front cover, Worcester Park Life is 4! Our first edition was June 2008, and we have now given away around 343,000 magazines! We print 7,000 each month and deliver to around 12,000 different homes in the KT4 area over a 2 month period. Coincidentally, our sister magazine Malden’s Village Voice is also celebrating this month with its 80th edition – where has the time gone! So a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed this month and the other 48 issues and to all of our wonderful advertisers without who we would not be still publishing today. A Jubilee celebration in Shadbolt Park On Saturday 16th June, the paddock of Shadbolt Park, between Edenfield Gardens and Salisbury Road, will be the venue for the Cuddington Jubilee Funday, organised by St Mary’s Church, Cuddington, in collaboration with other local groups. Open from 12 noon to 4pm, it will include many stalls, selling plants, needlecraft, jewellery, books, cakes, etc, and numerous sideshows including a bouncy castle. Arena events include an opening performance by the Kingston and Malden Scout and Guide Band, dancing by pupils from Auriol Junior School and the popular dog show. Ewell St Mary’s Morris Men will be performing throughout the afternoon. Refreshments will be available, including a barbecue, teas, beer and a Pimms tent. Entry is free. This will also be a chance to celebrate Shadbolt Park’s new status as a Queen Elizabeth II Field. Shadbolt Park is named after Ernest Ifill Shadbolt. When he began filling the gardens around his new house Darkfield with rare trees and shrubs from around the world, in the early 1920s, he had already been retired for about 15 years. He had previously had a distinguished career in railway engineering in India, beginning in 1874 and concluding with his service as Director of Railway Construction to the Government of India in 1904-6. Mr Shadbolt lived at Darkfield with his niece, E Lilian Brimble. Miss Brimble had also had an interesting career, as governess to the children of Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, the heir to the Kaiser. She was appointed ‘Director and Head of the Crownprincely Children’s Department’, and governess to the eldest princes, Wilhelm and Louis-Ferdinand, in 1911. Miss Brimble remained in this post for three years. She waited for Prince Wilhelm’s eighth birthday in July 1914 before going to England for her annual leave, and planned to return in the autumn. In early August, with international tension growing, the Crown Princess cabled that she would be glad if Miss Brimble could return immediately, but would understand if this was
impossible. Two days later war was declared, and she never had the chance to return and bid farewell to her charges. In her candid but generally affectionate memoir, In the Eyrie of the Hohenzollern Eagle, she concludes, “I prefer, while endeavouring to forget some things, merely to remember many sunshiny hours spent with boys who, to whatever family they belonged, were to me just children, loving and beloved.” Mr Shadbolt died in 1936, and the house and grounds were bought by Epsom and Ewell Urban District Council in the following year, and the gardens became

a public park. John (Jack) Ketchell, Mr Shadbolt’s gardener, continued to care for the gardens, remaining as Head Gardener until about 1960. He was succeeded by John Le Flem, who had been appointed as one of his assistants in 1958. Mr Le Flem recalls hearing Mr Ketchell’s memories of the gardens in Mr Shadbolt’s time: “Mr Ketchell told me that it wasn’t tarmacked, it was just gravel paths, and the grass was cut with a scythe. Every year an itinerant person used to stay there for a few months, sleep in one of the sheds, and help with the scything and the planting of shrubs and trees.” Mr Ketchell also told him that “during the war they had ‘economic beds’ to show people how to grow stuff during wartime, on the tree lawn”; produce from the beds was sold from the house. Mr Le Flem recalls the seasonal routine of planting. In the long flower bed between the house and Salisbury Road “we had tulips and pansies in the spring, and another time we’d have Chionodoxa and croci; you were given a list of plants for each bed, but you made your own plan. In the summer you had antirrhinums, begonias in different colours, marigolds, heliotrope; and you also had Abutilon, semi-standard or standard, dotted here and there. Another time you’d get packets of seeds and mark it out with sand, larkspur and so on.” In a round bed on the main lawn, close to the house “we used to do carpet-bedding: we had the red Alternanthera, green Alternanthera and orange-tipped Alternanthera, which you could trim with sheep shears; and you had Sempervivum making the shape of a star; and you’d put a large plant – a Dracaena or something like that – and that’d be the centrepiece.” Once the Council introduced a task-based bonus scheme, this became impracticable, so “I used to do my own designs with small plants – Begonia semperflorens, a group of white, a group of red, and other things in between.” Mr Le Flem also recalls the changing pattern of special events in the park: “They had brass bands when I first
went there; they played under the Catalpa in front of the house. They’d bring in all the seats by lorry a few days before, and we used to lay them out on the Sunday morning;” a wooden bandstand was taken from one park to another as required. In 1973 there was a garden trail with numbered posts and an explanatory booklet, and in the 1980s Tulip Sundays were held for several years: “I enjoyed preparing everything from the planting to the nurturing of them, shading them with netting so that they all came to flowering at the same time.” The above paragraphs are an extract from my new book Worcester Park, Old Malden and North Cheam, which is due to be published this summer – watch this space for further details! The species perhaps best associated with the park now is Hemerocallis, the day-lily, thanks to the work of the Friends of Shadbolt Park – more on that in a future article. A special year for a special lady Local writer Ruth Jemmett waves the flag on behalf of Worcester Park On 2nd June 1953 I was a pigtailed young child visiting her grandmother’s house to watch The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. I came from a patriotic family, as my second and third names were Elizabeth and Victoria! I sat expectantly, with several other relatives, in front of a small television set, marvelling that the little box with its wooden casing was about to bring black and white images of a momentous occasion into the homes of so many. The day proved to be an exciting, but tiring one. We didn’t want to miss a moment of the historic ceremony, so my grandmother fed us on cheese and pickle sandwiches to keep our strength up! I sat, transfixed, in front of the television , and watched a golden coach wend its way through damp London streets, carrying the new Queen of England to Buckingham Palace. Seeing her wearing her magnificent bejewelled crown was a thrill to my childish mind. By the time the evening came I fell asleep and had to be left at my grandmother’s house for the night, curled up, snoring on a chair! At the time, little did I dream that all these years later the same incredible lady, who had sworn her allegiance to her country so long ago, would be celebrating her Silver Jubilee. Not only has she more than ably been our monarch during her long reign, but has been Head of State in 16 Commonwealth realms and Head of The Commonwealth in 54 countries. She has known 12 British Prime Ministers and 11 American Presidents. Even the staunchest anti-royalist surely cannot fail to be moved by her strength and leadership. Those of us who were lucky enough to have witnessed her Coronation, will have seen, over the years, a fresh-faced young woman turn into a much-loved symbol of unity for millions of people all over the world. In the past 60 years I, and countless others have seen our monarch not only have to deal with matters of great political importance, but have witnessed her having to cope with all the ups and downs of her family’s lives. Even though our queen has been surrounded by luxury, even the most glamorous surroundings in the world cannot shield one from the natural stresses that accompany

being a mother and grandmother. In the middle of family traumas, such as the death of Princess Diana, she had to handle with the glare of global publicity, whilst having to manage her own emotions and those of her family. How many of us the could have dealt with such pressures without cracking up? Even though she was ‘trained for the job since birth’, nothing could have prepared her for what was to come. Of course she could have turned her back on such a dutiful life, as her uncle, Edward V111 had done, but that was not her way. Whatever crisis life threw at her - and she certainly had more than her fair share of them! - she stood by her Coronation vows, and now, as she approaches her 86th birthday, with her faithful consort, Prince Philip by her side, she has made many of us extremely proud to be British. The fact that our country is also hosting The Olympic Games in her Silver Jubilee year makes 2012 a very special year indeed. As I grew up (within a mile or so of the Worcester Park home where I now live) I always looked forward to Derby Day each year, as it meant that Her Majesty

The Queen, together with other members of her family, would be driven along local roads on her way to and from the event.When she was a younger monarch I remember being allowed to run to the local shops by myself for the very first time, in order to buy a small paper Union Jack. I recall that I purchased it for 1p, which was made up of a halfpenny and two farthings. You of the decimal generation now know what coins we dinosaurs used! (I suddenly feel very old!) How I enjoyed waving that flag at the Royal Family! And I still have it as you’ll see in the photo. Republican fans will, no doubt, mock at the image of limousines whooshing past adoring, cheering crowds, but my memories of those days still make me smile. Many years later I was lucky enough to meet The Queen, and restrained myself from mentioning my little flag! Yes, of course the concept of royalty and all its social implications, can inspire cynicism from those who decry the institution. On paper it makes no sense, but in reality it creates a feeling of belonging to a very large family for many, with an incredibly strong mother figure at is head. Those who would wish The Royal Family away, forget that in our increasingly chaotic world, we need the cornerstones of stability and continuity that may not exist in our personal lives.
Queen Elizabeth II is at an age when she is fully entitled to prefer an early night and a footbath in preference to giving a speech or attending an opera, but she soldiers on, delighting all around her by her presence. When so many people seem to have lost their way in our society, this special lady is a shining example to us all of how to stand by one’s word, husband, family and country As our National Anthem so beautifully puts it: “Long To Reign Over Us - God Save The Queen”! ‘Pop Up’ Art Gallery in Worcester Park Worcester Park Library is delighted to announce they have won £5000 of funding for a ‘Pop Up’ art gallery. The Library plan to open a temporary gallery in a disused shop on Central Road, Worcester Park– to coincide with the Olympics and Cultural Olympiad. They will host an exhibition of contemporary art by local artists – which will be accompanied by special arts and crafts events for all ages. Jackie Frost and the Friends of the Library applied for the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund – which gives community groups the chance to enhance local areas - such as Worcester Park and North Cheam. At the new Participatory Budget Meeting Robert Taylor (Library Supervisor) delivered a presentation to the local residents who decided which groups received funds through a live electronic vote (the first of its kind in the borough). Other worthy winners in the local area include the Girls Guides, Skateboarding teachers, the Trade association, and Friends of local Parks. commercial lettings, they have been successful in other parts of London and received the backing of locals and government. ‘Pop-Ups’ are great for local shoppers and traders because it removes an empty shop and replaces it with something to attract visitors. It is great for the landlords because an occupied space is safer and attracts further business. Most importantly it is great for the local community because it offers a new cultural venue – somewhere to go and see new art and get involved. The plans follow an exciting schedule of events currently offered at the library; - families will enjoy our weekly Story times, Baby Massage, Sunny Signers, Language classes and Homework Club. Adults may be interested in Reading groups, Bingo Club, Cinema Club, Pilates, Craft Club or Scrabble. Of course the library will continue to offer great new Books, DVDs, Audio books, Wi-Fi, and Internet access. Upcoming events include Library Open House on Friday 8th June (serving tea and cake) and Craft Fair Saturday on 9th June (thanks to Jackie Frost’s and Jane Honney’s hard work). Human Givens There are many different approaches to counselling/psychotherapy (sometimes referred to as “talking therapy”.) Worcester Park resident Stella Warriner tells us about Human Givens. The Human Givens approach has been around for about twenty years and is based on the ethos that everyone is born with innate physical and emotional needs and the resources to get these needs met. It is only when one (or more) of these emotional needs are not being met in balance or when a resource is being misused (e.g. if the imagination is being misused and a person is worrying too much) that mental/emotional distress occurs. Human Givens also uses modern scientific knowledge of how the brain works together with a variety of proven methods of counselling. Therapists take as few sessions as possible. They also increase the client’s selfconfidence and independence and make sure they feel better after every consultation.

by Justin Urquhart Stewart The French have a new one, The Russians have an old one, And the Greeks haven’t got one at all!
I appreciate that this could apply to many things such as economic policies, fashion sense or even kettles for all I know. However, my brain was heading towards those trying to find some effective leadership. Maybe the changes of last weekend might just be the catalyst for change that we have been waiting for to finally get things moving in Euroland and to try and break this seemingly intractable euro impasse. A combination of some Hollandaise on a tossed Greek salad may actually herald, not necessarily a wholesale change in policy but rather one of a change of emphasis. Although the ‘austerity pact’ may be sacrosanct to the German Chancellor, there is no reason why an encouraging growth ingredient cannot be added to the mix. This if not a perfect economic recipe for recovery, would be politically astute and reflect a level of empathy with popular frustrations. It would be seen at least to be providing some confidence in future growth rather than
the bleak picture laid out by some - many including our own dear leaders. So with Greece continuing to be a mess and with a Euro exit (subset or suspension) or even a coup at the extreme, looking like possible options, France becomes the more important issue. If a ‘growth’ policy can be allied to the current austerity agreement and potentially create the necessary confidence for central bond purchases, then a route for stabilisation and eventual recovery appears on the horizon. Perhaps action via such bodies as the European Investment Bank could provide the basis of a growth plan, whilst still ensuring that the disciplines of the austerity package are maintained. Now maybe there is a shaft of light – albeit I grant you a thin one. Another positive sign has come from the Bundesbank, who have a deserved reputation of being one of the most cautious central banks, that they may be willing to accept a higher level of inflation. This may seem wholly normal to the British where we positively revel in reasonable inflation, but for the Germans, fear of inflation is deep in the national psyche as a result of the 1920’s period of financial decimation caused by hyperinflation. Their view now though seems to be that limited inflation as part of the economic rebalancing within the Eurozone could help the most indebted nations. This however, is not going to allow any huge change, as for many German workers it is they who have been improving their productivity with controlled wages, whereas other nations’ workers have been profligate in the boom times and wasted their great opportunity of lower interest rates by paying themselves out of all proportion to their effectiveness. Additionally, Mrs Merkel will be watching the local polls in North Rhine Westphalia where 13 million voters go to the polls. Although these are not national, it is the most populous state and is being seen by many as a proxy general election, preparing the way for the real thing in 2013. VVoice

Recipe Pan-fried Mackerel Fillet with Lemon Spring Vegetables • 25g butter • 1 banana shallot, peeled and sliced • 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed • 400g mixed fresh vegetables like broad beans, carrots, peas, spring greens, broccoli • 100ml stock • Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon • Sea salt and freshly ground pepper • 150g creme fraiche • 3-4 sprigs dill, roughly chopped • 1/2 tbsp olive oil •2 large mackerel fillets Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water. Heat the butter in a sauté pan or deep frying pan. Gently cook the shallot for about 5 minutes until it
starts to soften and becomes translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes. Add the vegetable mix, cutting anything large like carrots, to match the size of the other vegetables. Stir for a minute or so, pour in the stock and lemon juice and add the zest. Season, then cover and cook for 5 minutes. Spoon in the creme fraiche and dill and cook for another 3-4 minutes. Heat another frying pan with the olive oil. Slice the mackerel fillet in half lengthways, taking out any bones you may find. Season the fish then pan-fry for 2 minutes on each side. Serve the mackerel on a bed of the vegetables with plenty of lemon wedges and some new potatoes..

Wills explained by Wendy from Plain Wills & Probate What is a General Power of Attorney? A General Power of Attorney is a legal document in which you appoint an Attorney to act for you in legal and financial matters. If you lose your mental capacity, the Attorney’s powers end. What is an Enduring Power of Attorney? An Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) differs from a General Power of Attorney in that it can “endure” through your mental incapacity (if that should happen to you) but your Attorney must then register it with the Office of the Public Guardian. They can use it without registering it if you simply have a physical incapacity eg a stroke or arthritis. An Enduring Power of Attorney can only cover financial matters. was possible to make Enduring Powers of Attorney up to and including 30th September 2007. No new EPA’s could be made after that date. All existing EPA’s (assuming they are already legally valid) continue to be valid. If you have an EPA and are sure it was completed properly and you know where the original document is if needed then you do not need to make the newer Lasting Power of Attorney.You may cancel an EPA or an LPA at any time as long as you are mentally capable. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? After 1st October 2007 a new system was introduced of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s). The word “Lasting” of course means the same as “Enduring” - that the document “lasts” through mental incapacity. However now the document must be registered first before it can be used. The registration process can take 10 weeks. There are two sorts of Lasting Power of AttorneyProperty and Affairs (your financial affairs) and Health and Welfare. The first covers your money, savings and your house or flat. The other covers where you wish to live in later life and whether you wish your life to be prolonged by artificial means in the event of a life threatening illness or accident for example. If you have already made an EPA to deal with your financial affairs and you are sure it is valid then you may wish to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (Health & Welfare) as well. Signing an LPA now will be of lasting help to you if aaccident or serious illness incapacitates you. Too many times people leave this too late and then the stress of trying to organise an LPA falls on relatives who are already very stressed by your illness or accident. Why do I need one? No-one but you can operate your bank account or sell your house/flat if you are unable to sign for yourself either through a stroke for example or mental incapacity.
Even if you own a house or flat jointly or have joint bank accounts with someone else they cannot sign for you. If you lose your mental capacity and have not signed an LPA the Court fees and legal fees are much higher than the cost of an LPA now. Appointing an Attorney by signing an LPA now while you are capable will be of lasting help to you if an accident or serious illness incapacitates you. How do you sign your name with a broken wrist, advanced arthritis, Parkinson’s Disease or some other condition which makes your signature shaky or unrecognisable? Can I do it myself? Most definitely Yes you can and unlike DIY Wills where it is not easy to get support, the Office of the Public Guardian will help you for free with the forms but they do not give legal advice. You can make an LPA yourself by ringing 0300 456 0300(The Office of the Public Guardian) or at their website -you do not need to employ a lawyer to make one for you unless you want to. Wise people have either an EPA or an LPA while they are alive and a Will. An EPA or LPA benefits them while they are alive by ensuring help when it is needed most.

On the grapevine Ah yes, this is it. If ever there was a year to be proud of being British, then surely this is it! The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympic games hosted by Blighty and the Bakewell Tart flavoured Müller Corner; could it get any better? Aret Kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin shares her thoughts It’s time to celebrate the best of British in all its forms, its dancing dogs, its changeable weather and of course (to get the party underway), its alcohol! Beer, Cider, Spirits and lets not forget wine, you name it we’ve got it, and what choice there is! We’re all aware of our long love affair with home-grown Beer, Ale and Cider, but until a few years ago you’d be hard pressed to find a good, drinkable English wine. It’s becoming very clear however, that ‘times they are a-changin’, and this could be the year to really put English wine on the map! Summer 2012 is set to see an unprecedented increase in demand for English wine as we all delight in our Britishness, and believe me there’s plenty of it out
there to be proud of. Regions which produce smaller yields are often higher in price, and although English wines reflect this, it’s worth remembering that in International blind tastings, sparkling English wines have been known to out perform their Champagne rivals! sampled some of their lovely wines which start at around £7.75. If you haven’t been it’s worth visiting to discover what Surrey has to offer in terms of English wine. Try the Chalk Ridge Rose, the 2010 was awarded gold at the International Wine Challenge 2011. England was one of 21 countries to submit a wine in the still rosé category for which there were 367 entries. Voice for wildlife Worcester Park’s own Carol Williams thinks there’s something wonderful about weeds The plants that we are inclined to disparagingly call ‘weeds’ are native wildflowers that feed the insects which are vital for the ecosystem. I would like to suggest that we change our attitude. A ‘weed’ is any plant that we happen not to want in our vegetable patch or among our prize roses; it is not a scientific or accurate label for any one species of flora. In Shadbolt Park, since we restored the pond , we have encouraged a small area to the side and back of the railings to ‘run wild’ as much as we can. We have introduced some rarer wildflowers, but mostly we are allowing what comes naturally and ‘control’ is minimal. The tiny seeds of native plants are an important food source for many birds. The turtle dove feeds almost exclusively on them and is in serious decline in the UK through lack of ‘weed’ seeds. I love grasses. There are so many types. Allowed to grow long, their feathery heads waving in the breeze are a delight. In the forest of the grass many small creatures may find safety from predators. The decline in so many animal species is connected to the disappearance of hay and

wildflower meadows.Yet we have many grassy areas that could become these places if we let them. Grass verges and roundabouts for instance, and set aside areas in parks and on school fields. Intensive arable farming has reduced the habitat for many of our small birds; the song thrush for instance. It is ‘red listed’ which means its situation is serious. Bats also need long grass. It is where a lot of their insect food is to be found at dusk. Many wild plants have such intriguing names and may have interesting folklore attached to them. Here are some you might like to ‘google’: Maiden Pink; Musk Mallow; Solomon’s-Seal;Viper’s Bugloss; Biting Stonecrop; Wood Spurge; Bastard Balm; Ragged Robin; Tutsan; Knapweed; Dog Violet; Purple Loosestrife; Some more common plants, often despised, are : chickweed, speedwell, plantain, herb benedict, herb robert, dandelion, daisy, buttercup. These are some of the ‘weeds’ that are regularly grubbed up. Have you ever seen the flower of speedwell? It is a tiny blue jewel. Herb Robert has lovely red stems, a tiny lilac flower, feathery foliage with a ‘herby’ scent. As a child I loved to blow the seeds from dandelion

‘clocks’ I plucked. Do children now enjoy such small pleasures? I love dandelions! Their bright and cheerful yellow flowers are a welcome splash of colour on dull days, their leaves can be added to salads - they are strong and slightly bitter but could be a part of your ‘5 a day’! Wild ‘greens’ were once an important part of diet for poor folk; they had vast knowledge of hedgerow plants and made use of the bounty on their doorsteps for food and medicines. Every food crop we have was developed from a wild ancestor; wheat is a cultivated type of grass. Every native plant will provide ample food for insects.
As bees are in trouble, nurturing our ‘weeds’ may be one of the simplest and best things we can do to help them. Bees love dandelion flowers!! I am not advocating letting your lawn and borders be overrun with wild invaders, but suggesting that, in one corner, you do allow the weeds to make a home and that you enjoy them. Many are edible; dandelions make good wine, pet rabbits and guinea pigs can be fed very cheaply with wild growing plants -they love chickweed, groundsel, dandelion, plantain and clover. Anyone for dandelion tea? Apparently it has many benefits, there is a website devoted to extolling its virtues and you can buy it on Amazon!

Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving Firstly, I would like to apologise for my absence from the May issue. What with work load and a personal trip abroad, I completely missed the deadline for going to print. I shall try not to do it again. I know I have touched on this subject before, but burglaries have increased recently, not just in Worcester Park and North Cheam, but across the board. Therefore, I think it’s only right to remind you all of ways in which you can help prevent yourselves becoming victims of a burglary. With the onset of warmer weather, we will be tempted to leave windows open. Please be careful when doing this, imagine this;You may be in the front room reading etc, it’s hot and you’ve opened the windows to let in some fresh air. In a while you decide to get on with that job in the back garden, so you put the paper down and go and get on with it. Just then and purely by chance, someone walks past your house and notices that your windows are open. They walk up your drive, up to the window and say ‘Hello’. No answer of course so they peer in and see a mobile phone and a wallet on a coffee table. Quick as a flash they’re in and out and it will be an hour or two before you notice these items are missing. By which time the suspect will be long, long gone. It’s all too easy, isn’t it? So, burglary! On the whole then, it’s an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured or occupied. There are things you can do to help deter burglars, some small things that will cost you nothing. It’s just a matter of adopting good habits. The first and most obvious is to lock all doors and windows. Do not leave any tools lying around your garden or yard, or anything a burglar may use to effect entry. Lock them securely in the garage or shed. Likewise, do not leave ladders or steps out, put them away. Trim your hedges down a bit more so that neighbours can see your property, at least from their upstairs windows (natural surveillance, leave thieves nowhere to hide). Do not leave valuables on display through your windows. Christmas or Birthday presents for instance, put them somewhere they cannot be seen or put nets up, obscuring the view inside. If you are planning to be away: Remember to cancel the delivery of milk and newspapers Security lighting, a lot of burglaries take place during the

day, but burglaries still occur at night.You can employ the use of lights that become activated with movement, so they will only come on when someone or something activates them. Disconnect the telephone answering machine, or re-word your greeting message to give the impression that you are only temporarily unable to answer. Enlist the help of a neighbour, friend or relative to keep a regular eye on your property and keep the front door clear of deliveries. If you are prepared to leave a key with a willing neighbour/relative, ask for curtains to be drawn and lights to be put on at night. Alternatively, invest in a few timers for the lights. Check your insurance policy. Some insurance policies for contents don’t cover you if you are away for more than 30 days. Set your burglar alarm. If you do not have an alarm, consider investing a few pounds in a dummy alarm box. It may well deter the opportunist thief. None of the above measures will guarantee that you won’t be burgled. But they will go a long way to ensuring that your property will be of less interest to opportunist burglars.
