Welcome to

our November edition Dear All,

I am delighted that this month we have The Worcester park Dramatic Society, Epsom Playhouse, Richmond Theatre and the Polka Theatre all advertising their Christmas Productions. If you’re looking for inspiration for Christmas presents then look no further than the trusty Outing Present to maybe one of these productions. For the past few years we’ve bought the children for Christmas theatre or day out tickets – I love the fact that it’s something to look forward to once the wrapping paper is off , and there’s no chance of it getting broken on Christmas Day! Between us, and Father Christmas, they’ve had tickets to Harry Potter Studios, Shrek the Musical and Cadbury World all of which have been very memorable family outings. I even managed to wrap up an Easter trip to see my brother and his family last year and they had to unwrap clues spelling out where we were going A-D-I-U-B. Very frustrating 10 minutes watching them and 2 grandparents trying to work out this anagram for this amazing holiday! We’ve also enjoyed annual membership to RHS Wisley and a few other places courtesy of money donated by my

Appeal

Poppy Collectors and Remembrace Parade November has once again appeared from nowhere - where does the time go? It only seems like a couple of months ago we were all together for the Remembrance Day service and parade. Once again our service begins at 10am – make sure you’re early to get a seat as it seems more people than ever are attending each year, which is good to see. In the lead up to this we shall be out on the streets at Waitrose, Iceland and Worcester Park station to collect donations for the very worthwhile Poppy appeal which means more than ever these days, with all the conflicts that are going on in the world. If you have any spare time and would like to help us as a volunteer collector, please pop in and see us as we always welcome all the help that can be offered! Please don’t forget that all the collectors are volunteers and work very hard to collect as much as possible.

Any donation, however small, is always welcome especially in these troubled times of today. As always it means so much to us all - especially to those fond memories of our loved ones friends and families alike. We still have membership vacancies so if you would like to join our club just pop in and see us at any time. Keith Martin Club Chairman

History

Worcester Park’s new railway bridge – 50 years old!

Most of us travel under or over Worcester Park railway bridge, but how often do you think about the work that was involved in constructing it? For just over 100 years after the opening of the railway line, the bridge was a bottleneck: Ada Batt recalled “The path was only about two foot wide, and it was on a level with the road, which was very dangerous for us young mums going under with a perambulator, because you had one wheel on the path and one on the road.” The low headroom made it impassable to standard doubledecker buses, so the 213 used single-deckers and the 127 service to Morden used special low-height double-deckers, with upstairs seats accessed from a trench along one side, from which you climbed onto the seats and slid along while trying not to bang your head. I was recently shown by Chris Watts a photograph of a plaque recording the official opening of the ‘new’ railway bridge by Alderman L W Hawkins, Mayor of Malden and Coombe, on 26th October 1963. The bridge was actually taken into use in the autumn of 1962, but this was part of a larger project which included the widening and lowering of the road, the realignment of the foot of The Avenue and Park Terrace, and the rebuilding of the offices between Station Approach and the main road. In order to minimise the number of days for which the line was closed, the new bridge was installed alongside the existing one, and then rolled into place once the old bridge had been removed. Chris Watts was one of a number of local people, also including Bernard Bell, who took photographs of the process of installing the bridge and realigning the roads, so I thought it would be appropriate to mark the 50th anniversary of the official opening by reproducing a selection of the photographs – especially as work is now under way on the latest bridge project at Worcester Park Station, a new footbridge with lifts – and I am keeping the text to a minimum to allow space for as many as possible of Mr Watts’s and Mr Bell’s pictures. 1: The old bridge, viewed from the Malden side 2: Work in progress on the flooring of the new bridge 3: The old bridge still in situ, with the new bridge in To advertise email jenny@wplife.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

This is an introduction to the Christian faith including discussions, a chance to explore questions, and social elements – plus a dessert! Ruth Jemmett Writes Remember Me

Ruth Jemmett Reflects On How November Confronts Us With The Subject Of Loss It’s that time of year when the sight of poppy sellers tells us that Remembrance Sunday isn’t far off. As a child of the 1950s I grew up in the wake of The Second World War. My family had been bombed out of London, and I spent the first few years of my life living in a ‘prefab’ - a supposedly temporary solution to the post-war housing crisis in this country. I lived there for twenty-one years. Hardly temporary! Our garden shed had been constructed with a corrugated iron roof on it as the government of the time knew that it could double as an air-raid shelter, should hostilities break out again. Food rationing and financial hardship were a way of life for us. Countless people were in mourning for loved ones they had lost in the war. Even though I remember seeing the bomb sites in London at that time, my young mind couldn’t comprehend the reality of death, with all its implications. November’s yearly services of remembrance around the world provide communities and countries with an opportunity to officially grieve for their dead, both military and civilian. Younger people, whose lives have been rarely touched by such things, must wonder what all the fuss is about. The nearest most of them have come to death is when they are zapping people on a computer screen in the name of ‘fun’. As I was growing up National Service was still in operation, and such training instilled a sense of discipline in young men, and some appreciation of moral values. Some might say that some sort of similar training - even in a community service guise - might be of great benefit to upcoming generations, many of whom seem to be aimless lost souls! Of course, not all young people are without ambition. I was recently introduced to a young man, whose dream, since his early years, was to be a soldier. As I watched him talk excitedly about enlisting, I felt for his parents. After all, soldiering was invented to kill real or perceived enemies, no matter how glamorous the adverts for the forces are, with their lure of travel and comradeship. Death in combat is always a possibility. A friend of mine works in the field of helping soldiers who have been damaged, either mentally or physically in one of the

many wars our country has been involved in over the past few years. Talking to her is quite sobering, as on a day to day basis she deals with the tragic aftermath of combat, death, mutilation, and grieving families. Young men, who are often being reared on watching violent computer games, probably have no real comprehension of what being a soldier truly entails, and I pray that my young soldier friend never has to confront a worst case scenario. No matter how scientifically advanced our world becomes, man’s natural instinct is to compete. One only has to watch the daily news to see endless visions of men fighting or wanting to fight. War is nature’s ritualised way of dealing with such a primitive feelings, and the wearing of uniforms can tap into latent violent urges to control others. Research has shown that men who wear uniforms as part of their jobs top the list in cases of domestic violence. Very much food for thought ….. On Remembrance Sunday the reality of what such instincts always lead to, is brought home to us as we watch soldiers of all ages march proudly together, as they recall their war-time experiences, and pay tribute to their lost comrades. Many of you in Worcester Park will

be familiar with the fact that my late son was multiply physically disabled. At the time of his difficult birth, an uncle, who had suffered a lifetime of severe mental illness during the years following his evacuation from Dunkirk, said to me “Yes he will be very disabled, but at least he won’t run the risk of being cannon fodder, like me …”. I must say that it was strangely comforting to me. Some old soldiers cope with the memories of their traumas by talking about it, or writing a book about their experiences.. Some find it too painful to refer to. Others find that memories of witnessing wholesale death and destruction so traumatising that they, like my uncle, are mentally scarred for life. Many inmates in Epsom and Ewell’s former cluster of so-called mental hospitals during the 1950s were such people, who had literally been sent mad by such things. How sad it is to think that countless young shell-shocked men were shot for ’cowardice’ in The First World War. Many were barely out of school, and had never even been away from their families until that time. My late grandfather’s lungs were damaged by enemy mustard gas as he fought in French trenches during World War I. The legacy of that lung damage hastened his eventual death a few years later. Like many before him, he had been proud to fight in a conflict that was meant to be “the war to end all wars”. Despite such a promise made all those years ago, it is food for thought to consider that at any given moment there are approximately forty-one wars taking place around the globe right now.

Our country’s involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past few years have made it necessary for aftercare services such as the famous Headley Court and The British Legion to play a never-ending role in supporting physically or mentally damaged soldiers and their families. Cruse Bereavement Care is, of course, always there to give solace to the grieving. The hackneyed phrase “time heals” can be true to a certain extent, as the passing of the years can soften the blow of grief, and blur its cutting edge just a little. Those who are no longer with us would want us to look forward, and enjoy what is left of our own lives. The wonderful poet Christina Rossetti summed it up in her poem “Remember Me”, when she said “Better by far you should forget and smile, than that you should remember and be sad ….”.. Remembrance Sunday gives us a chance to formally pay respect to all the people who we have lost, and to be mindful that many of them in the forces had to pay the ultimate physical or mental price, on our behalf, so that we can now enjoy the freedoms that many take for granted. Hopefully their experiences can teach us lessons for the future. Of course we can never forget the those we have loved and lost, whatever the circumstances. They walk within us, and it is our duty and privilege to live out the rest of our own days as well and as happily as we can, as a tribute of our affection for them.

Over the years I’ve studied wartime bomb disposal records and have helped find information for relatives of men who were engaged in this work. I have also helped the Bomb Disposal veteran’s associations of all three services with related research. It was a natural progression to publish some of the information I’d accumulated. In recent years I’ve written magazine articles and a couple of books on the subject, the latest being ‘Disarming Hitler’s V-Weapons’. The V1 flying bombs and the V2 rockets, were used against targets in Britain and the continent. Some failed to explode. My book concentrates on the men who were tasked with making these unexploded missiles safe. These men were not necessarily volunteers, often they just happened to find themselves posted into a Bomb Disposal unit. The book also explores the technical innovations that helped these men accomplish this highly dangerous work.

Chris Ransted I’ve lived in Worcester Park all my life. As a child in the 1970’s I became interested in the areas wartime history.

Walking to the High Street as a boy I was aware of the newer house in Lynwood Drive that had replaced one destroyed in the war. In Donnington Road I would strain to see over the fence into a garden that still had a concrete air-raid shelter. At school classmates knew of my interest and told me of the German bomber that crashed near Old Malden Lane. Neighbours also provided information, including a photo of the bombed damaged shops opposite the Plough pub. My fascination in that turbulent period in Britain’s history I’m sure stems from my family background. My parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all lived around London’s docklands during the blitz. Many of them were bombed out of their homes and moved to the ‘safer’ suburbs of Morden and later to Worcester Park. I remember the family gatherings where conversation often turned to reminiscing about the war years. I could not help but take an interest. This interest was further fuelled at school when I read a book about the men who dealt with unexploded bombs found after air-raids. This subject really caught my imagination, not only because of the tales of hugely courageous acts, but also because of the technical nature of the work. Many unexploded bombs contained booby-traps or time-delay mechanisms. To deal with them safely required an ability to solve mechanical puzzles. Finding a solution was literally a matter of life and death. There is something else about this subject that impresses me – This specific aspect of warfare has quite an honourable air about it. It is not about killing people, but about individuals risking their lives to disarm bombs and perhaps saving other lives in the process. In fact some 400 conscientious objectors volunteered to work in bomb disposal during the war. These men were often called cowards as they refused to take up arms and fight, yet they were willing to put their own lives on the line in order to help with this hazardous work.

Top award for local bowler At Auriol Bowling Club’s Presentation Day lunch, Lionel Sellers, founder member and exPresident of Auriol Bowling Club was presented with the prestigious Surrey Leopard Award by Surrey County Bowling Association President Peter Duncan, supported by Surrey County BA Secretary Derek Harvey. The Leopard Award is given “in recognition of outstanding and distinguished service rendered in the administration and management of the game at club level”. Nominations are assessed by a County committee, and only a very few are successful in any one year. Presenting the award (pictured), SCBA President Peter

Duncan said “I’m delighted to present this muchdeserved award to someone who has done so much to promote bowls through the club”. In response, Lionel Sellers – who had been totally unaware of his successful nomination – said “He was shocked but delighted to receive this award” and thanked the President of SCBA. Current Auriol President Barbara Watts said that she was absolutely delighted that Lionel’s invaluable long-term contribution to the ongoing success of the club he had founded had been recognised by the bowls community in Surrey. Auriol has had just two previous Leopard winners in its near-50 year history, with Eric Baker successful in 1987 and Bill Osborne in 1995. Who will be next? For further information please contact David Regan on 020 8337 8919 (email: clubsecretary@ auriolbowlingclub.com), or visit the club’s website at www.auriolbowlingclub.com.

Brush with a Body

The Worcester Park Dramatic Society is a local amateur theatre group of long standing, winner of the 2011 NODA London Flame Award and most recently nominated for awards for its sets and performance. We stage two major productions a year at the Adrian Mann Theatre in Ewell, in April and November. We meet Tuesdays and Fridays at 8.15 pm in the Elmcroft Community Centre In North Cheam, on the Sainsbury’s site. We have

rehearsals and quiz nights and organise theatre outings and social events. We welcome new members willing to act or work backstage in set construction, stage management, sound and lighting. If interested please contact our membership secretary, Yvonne Black, on 020 8786 7471. Our next production, Brush with a Body, advertised below, is a comedy drama involving a somewhat disorganised family and an Irish chimney sweep fond of whisky and quick to seize his opportunity. His discovery of a body while performing his job startles, frightens and worries the family who fear that a dark secret might be discovered by the police.

View from the City by Justin Urquhart Stewart

In 2012, 484,224 new businesses were registered in the UK, up from 440,600 in the previous year and almost a world away from an average of around 150,000 to 180,000 back in the 70’s and 80’s. Something has changed and it appears to be quite a fundamental alteration in the UK economy.

will sadly die within three years, but at a rising run rate like this, surely this has to be one of the most supportive pieces of economic and business news we have seen lately. So did this astonishing number reach the headlines? No - barely a mention although page 4 of the Financial Times (at the bottom of the page) had a modest comment. As Brits we are of course somewhat reluctant to shout about our successes, but on the other hand it’s about time we gave ourselves a dose of confidence that something tangible is being achieved. Oh and please don’t let me hear any politician claiming any thanks for this. They haven’t put up their house, they haven’t stayed awake at night wondering if the business is going to be there in the morning, and I wonder if they have ever had that fear of putting your cash card in to the bank machine to find that you are down to your last sous. Even now I hope that one day we will have a Chancellor that really understands the triggers that can

The smaller to medium sized enterprises (SMEs, defined as having less than 250 employees) are actually the life blood of the UK economy, with more employment and investment than the traditional leviathans that we normally hear about. People, despite the fears from the banks and the nerves of the media, seem to be far more willing than ever before to risk everything, put the house on the help smaller businesses to get them going, not in giveline and have a go at running their own business. This is in spite of the failings of the banking system and our structural failing in the UK to financially support start ups effectively (back to my rants on peer to peer lending again). I find this not just remarkable but very and encouraging. As I have mentioned before, we now have a record number of active companies in the UK (3.1 million), and this is despite the financial environment and a tax MOTs for Cars, Vans, regime only marginally conducive to supporting the Minibuses and Motorhomes entrepreneur. I grant that this has improved a little, but as we have a new breed of politicians who have never We carry out MOTs on site with late had a job, and civil servants who have never risked their appointments available Monday to Friday assets, I suppose that this is hardly surprising. and Saturday mornings Going back to the late 90’s we used to have an excellent Bring this advert with you and lunch time television show on BBC2 called Working receive 10% discount*. The Better Life Shedding a Tear by Derek Thompson

t’s funny how attached you can become to inanimate objects. It was only a summerhouse, after all - a glorified, doubledoored, glass-fronted shed.

And in its time it has mainly housed folding chairs, the lawnmower, chicken bedding and the cat. Even so, I was sorry to be parting company with it. Summerhouse still sounded so bright and optimistic, even this late in the year, despite its current appearance. The roof had become open plan in places and the Russian Vine (not for nothing is it sometimes known as mile-a-minute) had infiltrated and exploited the guttering, several joints and three places along one side panel. So, all things considered, it was time to make a difficult decision. Or rather, it was time for Anne to make a difficult decision. Demolition was a straightforward affair, once I’d taken on board Anne’s advice not to stand in the middle of it and pull. Nothing salvageable was wasted. The doors went to a neighbour to become elongated cold frames; likewise the bigger windows. We kept the smaller ones to bring on beans and butternut squash plants in the future. Plus, there was enough kindling - or rather, there will be - to fill our wood store. The next stage in my summerhouse grieving process occurred when Anne took me shed shopping, since we clearly didn’t need another summerhouse and our actual shed was also on its last legs. When you run out of spaces on the doors to fit replacement hinges, it’s time to call it a day. I wandered around the shed yard, surly and unimpressed, like a schoolboy having to buy new shoes for next term. And then I saw it, framed in golden sunlight: a wonder shed. With glass along one side to let in light for propagation and so that we can watch the birds, and enough space for my tools, my bike and the cat, it ticked all the boxes. Delivery was assured in four weeks’ time and no money down - an all-round winner. However, now that we’d prepared the ground, it was time to really prepare the ground by levelling it and adding a layer of sand. As the shed needs to sit on blocks and these have to be aligned and spaced perfectly, Anne waited until I’d gone out to work. A neighbour popped over to help; the same one who corrected my comedy coat rack (now you see it, now you pick it - and a pile of coats - up off the floor). By the time I returned home, all I needed to do was position some plastic sheeting, so that the cat didn’t feel tempted to leave an organic time capsule in the sand. The shed people delivered on time and put the shed up on site. The block work was, thanks to my noninvolvement, perfect. Even the cat flap seemed to

meet with Porsha’s approval. She is a pre-named, rescue cat, so I take no responsibility. In the evening, a deputation of neighbours came up to take a look around the shed (with torches). Like I say, it’s a small village and not much happens here. One person asked, with genuine concern, if we planned to rent it out to holidaymakers. I quickly shed some light on the matter. Ground Cover by Pippa Greenwood

Ground cover plantings are a wonderful way to create gorgeous carpets of colour in your garden, whatever its size and wherever it’s located. But what’s so special about groundcover growing, when is it most useful and when should you start?

The initial few months will take some effort, but once growing well, most ground cover planting needs little if any maintenance except perhaps a very occasional trim, some food and water in drier weather. It has a superbly smothering effect on the weeds, killing weedlings and deterring further weeds from appearing. The denser the groundcover planting, the better the effect. Autumn is a great time for planting. Trees, shrubs, climbers and herbaceous plants that go in to the ground at this time of year often establish extremely well as they have the luxury of enjoying the relatively warm and yet moist soil, a perfect place for new roots to grow out and establish rapidly. Make sure you invest a bit of time and effort in to the preparation. Clear the area of weeds, digging out all tough weeds completely if you can. Fork the soil over, removing debris such as large stones or buried rubbish and then fork in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, and perhaps a little slow-release feed too.

If you’re planting up a slope, it’s worth trying to secure the soil a little too, as all that preparation and weed clearing will have loosened the surface and made it prone to erosion. Once growing well the roots of the plants will help to secure the slope brilliantly, but in the meantime, use landscape fabric pinned down onto the surface of the slope. Don’t be tempted to cram the plants in too closely. Given time they will form the desired effect if planted at the correct spacing. But if you fall in to the trap of planting them elbow to elbow, then they are more likely to become stressed and miserable, more prone to disease and will need thinning out. Make sure the plants are kept just moist at the roots until they’re well established and feed occasionally. By choosing varieties of plants which are recommended for use as groundcover you’ll be unlikely to have to do much if any pruning. So what should you choose to grow? Foliage that is attractive and interesting makes a wonderful groundcover planting and if you wish you can add a few more flamboyant flowering plants to the mixture too. By using plants with interestingly shaped leaves or variegated leaves your leafy planting will look even better. If you want a reasonable effect all year around, then select at least some of the plants you use from the evergreens. These may lose their leaves, but they do so gradually so you’ll never be left with totally bare soil. Great Shrubby Groundcover Ideas Heaths and Heathers, Cotoneaster horizontalis and Cotoneaster microphyllus, Stephandra incise ‘Crispa’, groundcover roses eg the ‘Flower Carpet’ roses. Great Shade-Tolerant groundcover Ideas Sarcococca hookeriana var.humilis, Mahonia repens, Gaultheria procumbens, Hypericum calycinum, many hebes including Hebe pinguifolia, Euonymus fortune cultivars such as ‘Emerald n’Gold’, ‘Emerald Gaiety’ Herbaceous Ground Cover in Shadier Spots Sweet violets, pulmonaria (lungworts) eg the white-flowered ‘Sissinghurst’, Bugle (the ajugas eg Ajuga reptans ‘Burgundy Glow’), Lysimachia nummularia (Creeping Jenny), Lily-of-thevalley, Lamium ‘White Nancy’ and Lamium ‘Silver Beacon’, Bergenia Sunnier Groundcover Snow-in-summer, thymes, oregano, many of the sedums, chamomile. OCTOBER 2013 UPDATE Autumn is generally a game of two halves. On the one hand buyers tend to be more determined, keen to make their move by Christmas, and on the other the number of properties for sale tends to be lower as vendors decide to spend one last festive season in their home before moving. Let’s talk about buyers first. We have lost count of the number of buyers who are very ready but simply can’t find. This is unusual. Many have sold their previous property, thus strengthening their position, but have been pipped at the post on multiple properties and are therefore renting temporarily or living with friends or family. It’s clearly not an ideal solution and we really feel for them. The immediate result is that properties for sale have been attracting a lot of attention. As we write a couple of homes, new to the market this weekend, have attracted 12 and 14 viewings respectively on our open mornings. With the best will in the world those properties can only be sold once and we are bracing ourselves to deliver disappointing news to a good number of potential buyers over the coming week. It’s never easy to pass that news on but it’s harder at the moment knowing that property supply is very low and their chances of moving before Christmas are getting slimmer. The broader result is a little more complicated and impacts both our sales and lettings departments. Lettings are buoyant, fuelled not only by those that would ordinarily rent but also those who would love to buy if only they could find the right property. Rentals are attracting multiple viewings and Landlords can often choose between tenants with good offers. It’s a mixed blessing. We are consequently running low on property to let, with a lot of good tenants searching and often a decision turning on very little indeed. We get to know all our prospective tenants and are as committed to finding them a home as we are to getting the right tenant for our landlords so we are as sad for the tenants that miss out as we are happy for the Landlords that we have matched. Meanwhile it will come as no surprise that our sales department remains extremely busy with viewing levels increased and buyers chasing an ever shorter list of available property. Certain property types have all but ‘sold out’ this month resulting in some very quick sales as those that have missed out snap up any similar property we bring to market. Last, but by no means least, our progressions department is doggedly chasing up the other professionals that get involved after a sale is agreed, keeping a watching brief on the process all the way to completion. Over the summer there were some serious delays as surveyors, and then solicitors, found themselves overwhelmed. That situation has eased but it remains imperative that all aspects are monitored to ensure our files don’t slip to the bottom of a pile on somebodies busy desk. If you are thinking of selling or letting your property then there probably hasn’t been a better time to do so in years. Whether you are considering doing so immediately or in the New Year please contact us to find out when the best time would be to put your property on the market. Lettings@JacksonNoon.com

Polka Theatre Join the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts in a magical Wonderland this winter, as Polka’s traditional show for the season shines a new light on one of the most loved stories of all time. Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland comes alive for a new generation at Polka Theatre, Wimbledon from 22 November 2013 – 15 February 2014.

Dusting off the Victorian setting Polka take a fresh look at the story to bring Lewis Carroll’s vivid dream world to life, bursting with original songs and music, stunning set and costume designs and plenty of imagination and humour for children aged 6+ and their families Top of the list of children's favourites since 1865, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a timeless tale about growing up. Audiences meet a very modern Alice; a curious, intelligent and fearless character who is finding out who in the world she is. Exploring her attic on a winter’s day, Alice’s sister wants her to be quiet and no one wants to play. But as the White Rabbit appears, Alice's attic is magically transformed into a series of beautiful, strange and fantastical worlds. Writer Simon Reade remains true to the original, with a gloriously funny and lively script full of mad, oddball characters and curiously strange occurrences! There will be magic, heart, jeopardy, slapstick and of course a song to sing on the way home. Tickets are £16 (concessions £11). For more details and to book visit www.polkatheatre.com or by cal the Box Office on 020 8543 4888. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is sponsored by Morrisons Solicitors.

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams

are likely to be healthier. It is not yet clear why this is so, but it may be that they inhibit the spread of mink. Badgers were, until fairly recently, legally baited with dogs for sport. They are not endangered (yet) but are not liked by landowners because they prey on young pheasants, which, of course, are reared for the sport of shooting them. Toads spend most of their lives in damp, dark places beneath logs and leaf piles and, of course, hibernate in cold weather. Sadly many are killed on the roads as they try to get to their spawning ponds in Spring. In Grahame’s day, there were many more wetland habitats where amphibians thrived -and very little danger from traffic. The friends in our story are written about as if they were people like us, and perhaps we would behave differently towards other animals if we were, actually, to see them in this way, rather than as inferior to us in some manner, and ‘in the way’ of something we wish to do. Perhaps there would be more respect for them, more reverence for their wild lives, if they were seen by us as ‘persons in non-human form’. I dream of times when once again our countryside will be teeming with wildlife, as those of us who care, strive to repair and recreate habitats, conserve wilderness, save endangered species and teach the next generation to value and respect the wild.

‘ So he scraped and scratched and scrabbled and scrooged, and then he scrooged again and scrabbled and scratched and scraped, working busily with his little paws and muttering to himself, “ Up we go! Up we go!” till at last, pop! his snout came out into the sunlight, and he found himself rolling in the warm grass of a great meadow. “This is fine!” he said to himself. “This is better than whitewashing!” The sunshine struck hot on his fur, soft breezes caressed his heated brow, and after the seclusion of the cellarage he had lived so long, the carol of happy birds fell on

his dulled hearing almost like a shout’. This passage is from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and introduces us to The Mole -friend of Badger, Ratty and Toad. The book was written in 1908, when the countryside was still rich with wildlife, and agribusiness with its pesticides had not damaged so many ecosystems and the biggest threats were men with guns and dogs, and harsh winters. For moles, danger came from molecatchers, who, as late as the 1950s, were still trapping about a million of them for their fur. In Medieval times, the common name for this little animal was ‘moldewarp’ which means ‘earth thrower’. Moles, in fact, rarely come up to the surface in the day to soak up the sunshine, as The Mole does in our charming story; they are practically blind, having little use for good sight, dwelling mostly underground in a system of tunnels. They emerge sometimes at night to forage for nest materials, and young ones, leaving the family burrow and seeking new territory, may also come above ground occasionally. When they do so they are very vulnerable to predators, although their flesh is distasteful to many carnivorous animals. Barn owls, however, seem to take quite a number of them. Many farmers and gardeners do not much like moles, as they ruin grassland with their soilheaps; however they are good aerators of soil, and feed on invertebrates like beetle larvae and slugs, which can damage many plants. Their main food is earthworms; they eat about half their own bodyweight every day. ‘Ratty’ - the Water Rat of the story, is actually a vole -and now an endangered species, which it wasn’t in Grahame’s time. Habitat loss and predation by American mink escaped/ released from fur farms in the 20th century, are the chief reasons for their sharp decline, along with serious water pollution in the 1960s due to pesticide run off from farmland. This disaster was responsible for the near extinction of the otter in Britain. Studies have shown that ! where otters are returning to rivers, water vole numbers

“National media focus on the Tudors/local interest in Tudor history on our doorstep in Nonsuch Park. BBC2 has a season on Tudor history; the V & A has an exhibition of Tudor Art and Buckingham Palace is showing portraits exploring Tudor fashion. The local resident, however, does not need to travel to London to appreciate some of Tudor history. An amazing model of the original Nonsuch Palace, built by Henry VIII to celebrate the birth of his son Edward – so important to the Tudor dynasty – is on view every Sunday 2 – 5 p.m. in the Gallery of the Mansion, Service Wing entrance, Nonsuch Park. The site is marked on the Northern side of the Park by three tall pillars which now stand as the only physical evidence of this amazing building. They are as three sentries guarding a bygone age. In addition, a unique and important collection of stained glass amassed by Samuel Farmer, owner of the present Mansion in the early 1800’s, features one particular panel commemorating the marriage of Jane Seymour to Henry VIII – only 11 days after the execution of Anne Boleyn! These are just a few of the treasures on view in the Nonsuch Mansion Service Wing Museum open on 2nd & 4th Sundays in the month (9th and 23rd) 2 – 5 p.m. Combined entry to Gallery & Museum £3.00, Concessions £2.00. A musical comedy by Dan Goggins Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show. Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. 31 October Jongleurs Back by popular demand, Jongleurs comedy is returning to The Epsom Playhouse. 4 November Essence of Ireland

Safer Neighbourhoods Age UK

by PCSO Gary Weaving Whilst at a recent meeting, I was listening to a very nice young lady speaking enthusiastically about Age UK. I was very impressed with her commitment and belief in what she was saying and also the range of services and activities that Age UK provide. It occurred to me that with Christmas not far away it might be useful to present this information to the residents of Worcester Park. We all have or know of elderly neighbours or even relatives who would really benefit from some of the Age UK services. Also, the activities they provide would appeal to a great many people. After the meeting I asked the young lady if she could write and send me a piece that I could include in this magazine. Below is what she sent me. Thank you Melanie. Christmas..... It’s the most wonderful time of the year and it will soon be upon us. Carols and mince pies, presents and far too many sweets, winter frosts and breaths steaming in the air as people hurry home to friends and family. And yet, there are many older people who view this most wonderful time of year with dread. Struggling with heating bills and shopping, or perhaps with loneliness, reduced mobility, money troubles or health issues. There are hundreds, if not thousands of older individuals who find themselves in dire straits over Christmas. Age UK Sutton is here to help. As the nation’s foremost age-related charity, we offer information and advice, and conduct a range of programmes and activities, all aimed at improving quality of life. You are not alone. Working closely with other community services, Age UK Sutton aims to uplift older people, so that they too may enjoy the season. Our portfolio of services encompasses: Practical support in your own home - to include Helping Hands, Handyperson and Gardening, everything you need to keep you independent at home. Information and advice – Our knowledgeable staff are always ready to help. You can come to them with any concern or request and they will do their best to help you, ensuring you receive the best possible advice and information for your circumstances. Money Matters – We can help you with managing your money and avoiding theft and scams. We can also support you to find the best energy deals.
