maybe amongst the smallest nations in the world, isolated except for its successful tourism industry. But the same cannot be said about the island nation’s cultural identity. From local cuisine to music, the culture of Maldives reflects a blend of the many cultural aspects that were introduced by the seafarers who settled in the country in the ancient times. The Maldives’ culture has deep influences from many different countries, including neighbouring Sri Lanka and India, Indonesia and Malaysia. As expected, the Maldives’ culture has borrowed several traits from its neighbours in South Asia, especially in terms of the traditional cuisine. This includes spicy curries using coconut milk and fish as the main staples and either white rice or Roshi (a thin variant of Indian flatbread) as a popular accompaniment. For those who want to try something different, there is a range of world cuisine available, including pasta, burgers, noodles and other comfort foods – some of which have been infused with local tastes and spices. This infusion of local and international cuisine can be seen from the menus of several resorts across the archipelago.

However, some of the South Asian customs especially with regard to women such as the sub-continent’s tradition of secluding women from public view are not tenets of life in the Maldives. In retrospect, women play a major role in society – not surprising considering the fact that many Maldivian men traditionally spend the whole day out at sea fishing. The mixing of cultures is very much seen in Maldivian art forms as well. The music played with the local Bodu beru (literally translated as big drum) resemble that of African drumming. The Dhoni (a unique Maldivian sailboat) is an art form itself built with skilled craftsmanship, with significant similarities to the Arabian dows. The fine artistry of Maldivians, seen in the intricate details on wooden beams in antique mosques such as the Friday Mosque in capital Male, represents what traditional craftsmen have gained from Southeast Asian architecture. This fusion of cultures also extends to elements whose origins are unknown; like the distinct geometric designs used in mats – known in local Dhivehi language as Thundu kunaa – woven from local materials as well as the embroidered neckline of women’s traditional dresses – called Libaas – and their ornaments.

Another important aspect of the Maldives’ culture and its identity is the unique language. The language, known as Dhivehi, is from Indo-Iranian Sanskritic origin, and is closely related to the Sinhalese language, which is widely spoken in neighbouring Sri Lanka. However, Dhivehi has gradually evolved overtime due to influences from Islamic and Arabic traditions – both of which have been interwoven in Maldives’ culture and identity. Since Maldives embraced Islam in 1153, the religion has been central to the life of Maldivians. The main events and festivals of Maldivian life revolve around the Muslim Hijri Calendar. From infancy, children are taught the Arabic alphabet and the Muslim holy book of Quran. Religious education is provided both at home and at school, and Islam is part of the school curriculum. On the cultural front too, Maldivians are quite open to adaptation, and are generally welcoming to outside inspiration. The island nation’s culture has always continued to evolve with time. Locals still eat fish and fishermen still spend days out at sea, but tourism now takes a standing prominence. Most Maldivians still want to believe in upholding unity and conforming to a single identity, but recent waves of socio-political reform in the country have created a whole new culture of new ideas and attitudes. The effects of the modern world are now embraced, while still striving to uphold the country’s identity, traditions and beliefs.

Maldivians love a good story. So it is no surprise that the ancient history of the Maldives revolves around myth and folklore, told through times in different forms. With stories such as Rannamaari, a tale about a sea monster that comes ashore every full moon and demands a virgin sacrifice, and conflicting accounts of the origin of the first settlers in the country, the Maldives has a rich history that dates back thousand

With little written about the discovery of the Maldives and the origins of its people, legend has it that an exiled prince from the Kalinga Kingdom in India settled in the Maldives around 2000 BC. Some contradicting accounts say that the prince was from what is today Sri Lanka, and was invited to stay on rulers after he and his wife stopped at the northern Raa atoll during one of their voyages.

The latter theory has been somewhat backed by several Western historians, including the Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl who in his bestseller, “The Maldive Mystery” has argued that the islands were first colonised by Sri Lankan seafarers around 2000 BC. Similarities shared by Dhivehi, the native language of Maldivians, and Sinhalese, which is spoken in Sri Lanka, and the practice of Buddhism in the ancient Maldives also serve as strong

evidence that suggests that the Maldivian people can trace their ancestral lineage in Sri Lanka.

Conversion Islam

Maldivians practised Buddhism – a religion widely followed in neighbouring Sri Lanka – up until 1153 AD. Dome-shaped mounds called Hawittas, suggestively similar to Buddhist stupas found in Sri Lanka, have

been discovered from some parts of the Maldives. The Maldives’ conversion to Islam is another interesting historical event, with myth and fact mixed in. According to local folklore, a Sunni Muslim visitor named Abul Barakaath Yusuf al Barbary visited the Maldives during the time when Maldivians lived in fear of the Rannamaari, which was believed to have the power

to destroy everything and everyone unless a virgin girl was offered as sacrifice. So every full moon night, a virgin girl was kept in a temple near the seashore, only to be found raped and dead in the morning. By luck, Abul Barakaath was staying in the house from where the girl for that full moon night was selected. Instead of the girl, he went to the temple disguised as a girl and kept reciting the holy Quran until morning. The islanders were amazed, and this event convinced the reigning king to embrace Islam.

Colonial era Whatever legend tells us, Maldivians today are a mixed race due to the country being heavily visited by people from all over the world. From neighbouring countries in Asia and Africa to distant nations in the Middle East and Europe, traders sailed all the way to the Maldives for its commodities, especially cowry

shells, which were used as an international currency in Africa, China, Arabia and India. Trade with cowry shells was the mainstay of the Maldives for many centuries, and these precious shells have been discovered as far away as Norway! As foreign trade became increasingly important to the seafaring nations of Western Europe, so did their visits to the Maldives. Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands set their sights on the Indian Ocean islands, and in

the years that ensued, the Maldives was colonised by the Portuguese. The islands remained under Portugese rule for 15 years until a local leader named Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Azam and his brothers drove the colonisers away. This event is marked to this day on the first day of the third month of the lunar year as National Day. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, the Dutch and the British vied for control over the islands. By the end of the 18th century, the British had effectively undermined Dutch influence in South Asia, and the Maldives too became an official British protectorate in 1886, with its external affairs to be governed by the Brits and Maldivians having responsibility over their internal affairs. During the British era, the Maldivians adopted a proposal to become a republic, only to depose the President of the Republic Muhammad Amin Didi and reinstate the sultanate a year later. It was also during these times that the southern atolls formed a breakaway nation called United Suvadive Republic, after being

angered by then Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir by questioning the terms of a lease the Brits held for a military base in the southernmost Addu atoll. The Maldives remained an official British protectorate until 1965, when the Brits receded control of the islands to the Maldivian government. The country then joined the United Nations as a sovereign state, responsible for its own defence.

Post-independence Transformation Three years after independence, Nasir was elected president, effectively ending the sultanate and creating the second republic. Many credit Nasir, who lived in self-exile in Singapore after his 10-year long presidency and until his death in 2008, with helping modernise the Maldives, an impoverished nation of fishing communities that has gradually developed to become a luxury tourist destination for the world’s wealthy. Likewise, he was widely praised for introducing British-style education, radio and television and for building the country’s first international airport.

Aside from the political instability and upheaval in recent times, the Maldives’ economic growth has continued on its upward trajectory, writing one chapter after another in its development success story. With more territorial sea than land, marine resources have played a vital role in shaping the contours of economic development, with nature-based tourism and fishing being the main drivers of economic growth. In the early 1980s, it was one of the world’s 20 poorest countries, with a population of 156,000. Today, with a population of more than 360,000, it is a middle-income coun-

Nasir was succeeded as president by Egypt-educated Islamic scholar Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who dominated the nation’s political scene for 30 years, elected to six successive terms by single-party referendums. Following fierce opposition, including largescale demonstrations, Gayoom pledged to embark upon democratic reforms such as a more representative political system and expanded political freedoms. Although progress was sluggish and many promised reforms were slow to be realised, political parties were legalised in 2005. In June 2008, a constituent assembly finalised a new constitution, which was ratified by Gayoom. The first-ever presidential elections under a multi-candidate, multi-party system were held in October 2008, and incumbent president Gayoom was defeated in a run-off poll by Mohamed Nasheed, a political activist who had been jailed several times for his pro-democracy struggle. Despite Gayoom and Nasheed’s exit from presidency, they continue to dominate lo-

try with a per capita income of over USD 6,300. The Maldives has inevitably gone through its fair share of transformation through time. Over the course of its history, Maldivians have travelled far and wide, becoming spirited adventurers whose geographical isolation had not limited the boundaries of their world. Even today, Maldives remains very much like it has always been – small, but not lacking; isolated, but not invisible!

Multi-coloured fishing boats line the harbour facing the fish market, where local fishermen unload their dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s catch. Locals, expatriates and visitors alike come here to buy fresh yellow fin tuna, skipjack tuna and varieties of seafood.

Mostly open during the evening and through out the night, these stalls are the place to be to enjoy some local sweets, savoury treats as well as fresh king coconut. Just a block west from the Fish Market is the Local Market, where islanders sell fresh produce. You can buy seasonal fruits such as local mangoes as well as a mix of coconut, papaya, watermelon and banana. A variety of salad leaves and exotic local vegetables can also be found here, but you have to be ready to haggle for the best price!

Historical Sites

The 17th-century Hukuru Miskiy (Friday Mosque) and its minaret stand as a testament to the skills of early Maldivians. Across the road is the Medhu Ziyaaraiy, tomb of Abul Barakaath Yusuf al Barbary, a Sunni Muslim traveller responsible for introducing Islam to the archipelago. There is also the Muliaage, an old presidential palace that still functions as an official residence of the president.

The congested capital city has recently welcomed a host of new parks, mostly on the western and eastern end. The most notable of them is the historic Sultan Park, which has been relaunched as the Rasrani Bageecha. The park has been modelled according to traditional Maldivian architecture, and functions as an entertainment and heritage site.
