SITE LOCATION

er

• Located in eastern Muncie, Indiana • East of the White River and north

MAYFIELD

of East Jackson Street • Directly west of the Mayfield residential subdivision • The site will tie into the White River and Cardinal Greenways

MASTER PLAN - SITE DESIGN • Detailed view of building forms and their relationships to each other • My building will reside along E Jackson St. • A new parking lot will be placed to the north of the building to provide direct access to the building’s public spaces

*Produced by Jake Senne and Sarah Bisch*

MASTER PLAN - PUBLIC VS PRIVATE • Master plan schematic layout of the entire proposed site • Includes a variety of building typologies • Incorporates green spaces to tie into the existing greenways adjacent to the site • The green public circles indicate these paths • Red notates new housing to tie into the existing neighborhood

*Produced by Jake Senne and Sarah Bisch*

MASTER PLAN - CIRCULATION • Mixed use buildings spread across the site • The green corridor will serve as the artery through the site • Students, faculty, and visitors can ride their bikes or drive their cars to the building • The parking lot to the north is ideal because the main entrance is on the north facade of the building

*Produced by Jake Senne and Sarah Bisch*

SITE CONTEXT • The building is one story in most places to tie in with the adjacent environment • The variation in the roof height establishes a hierarchy of spaces • Signage on the SE and SW corners of the site indicate what the building is and recognize Ball State as an affiliate • The loading dock is connected with the exterior building spaces which creates a buffer from the mechanical equipment as well *Produced by Jake Senne and Sarah Bisch*

FLOOR PLAN • Blue indicates timberframe structure • Ellipses indicate large openings in the facade • Entrance faces the Mayfield neighborhood to the east • Parking will be to the north of the building so other entrances will access the cafe too

SEMI-PUBLIC

Blue - Semi-Public

PRIVATE

Educational spaces for researchers, students, and faculty

Red - Private Loading and storage location for equipment; mechanical room; faculty offices

ACTIVE SYSTEM - HVAC • Single duct, Variable Air Volume (VAV) System • Very versatile in nature • Allows for each zone to have a relatively high amount of control • Virtually self-balancing

3D MASSING • Double-story and open areas indicate important spaces like circulation corridors, the gallery, and entrances • Entrances are curved overhangs and extrude from the building for emphasis • Each roof form covers a different element within the hierarchy

NORTH ENTRANCE • This North entrance is the focal entrance of the building from the parking lot and greenways • The undulating roof form reaches a climax over the entrance which is also emphasized by the contrasting curved mouth • Light, finger-like timber columns support this roof structure

EAST AND WEST ENTRANCES • Top image - East entrance features large arch with finger-like timber structure that continues over the gallery • The fluidity of the roof structure over the cafe will draw the public into the space • Bottom image - The double high ceilings in the studio and building spaces allow for more creative freedom for the students • The loading area and mechanical systems will be on this west side

HIERARCHY RULEBOOK • The most prominent form of this building is the North-South volume; wide hallway, high ceilings, and large windows (blue) • The secondary form is the wing that contains the laboratories and faculty offices (light green) • The tertiary volumes house the lecture hall, loading dock, and storage; single use and little circulation (red) • The spine ties all of these pieces together; undulating roof and directional circulation (dark green)

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM • Douglas fir timberframe will serve as the structure • Four different arrangements that correlate with the program • The main volume is light and open; uses clerestories • The secondary wing features a series of sawtooth roof forms with a redundant structure • Two tertiary volumes use triangulated trusses; limited light • The spine volume is dynamic and undulating; uses south or north light

EXPOSED STRUCTURAL SYSTEM • Top Left - Sawtooth Roof in the lab corridor • Bottom Left - Triangular Truss in the large lecture hall • Top Right - Looking North towards the new parking lot • Bottom Right - Looking South towards Jackson St.

DAYLIGHT ANALYSIS Top image - 9 am - 12 pm • A lot of well lit spaces, with several dark areas with little, if any, natural daylight • The dark blue areas in the laboratory wing should stay 9 am - 12 pm

artificially lit while portions in the west end of the spine need adjustments Bottom image - 3 pm - 5pm • Only the main corridor and the east end of the spine have

N

substantial light 3 pm - 5 pm

• Few improvements can be made

FOUNDATION • Continuous concrete footing with spot footings underneath interior columns • Only has to go below the frost line which is 3’ in Indiana • No basement so the building will be slab on grade • This image displays two 1/4” steel L-brackets that form a connection between a timber column and the slab along an exterior wall

MATERIALITY • Cedar siding ties in with the traditional materials of Muncie • The cedar cladding can be the base material • Glass fiber reinforced polymer panels can express a playfulness Cedar Rain Screen

through curves • The dichotomy could be experimented with on the northern dynamic spine and the undulation that imitates the sawtooth roof

NEXT STEPS • Create a student lounge on the south side of the building • Generate an intentional circulation through the building and gallery space • Incorporate landscaping features and elements into the design language • Define interior spaces with materials and walls
