The glassworks in Målerås was founded in 1890, shortly after the railway had found its way through the wilderness of the region. During the centuries our products have developed from necessary items such as mouth blown windows or medicine bottles to beautiful usable tableware and statement sculptures.
All production is performed and handmade in Målerås and this makes every piece of crystal unique. The glassworks has proudly preserved most of the old techniques. The key to success is the cast crystal in combination with the unbelievably detailed design. The glassworks also owns a local iron foundry where all the moulds and details for art glass are produced. This is an important part of the Målerås success story.
Målerås Glasbruk creates both top quality household glassware and a unique form of art glass. Målerås Glasbruk is a true trustee of the traditions of art in Swedish glass. Swedish handmade crystal at its very best.

MATS JONASSON 80 YEARS
Mats Jonasson was born on March 20 th 1945, not long before the white doves of peace would fly across Europe after years of war and sacrifice. Mats finished primary school after seven years, and was then hired as an engraver’s apprentice at the glassworks. Over the next few decades he worked with many of the most respected contemporary glass artists in Sweden. During this period, he developed that distinctive style of his which he has since perfected.
CRYSTAL AND FREEDOM
With a deep devotion for his home town and with a belief that nothing is impossible, Mats Jonasson took up the fights against large corporations, centralisation and mass production. Målerås would not be ruled by stock market sharks with goals of streamlining and merged production units. With Mats at the helm, Målerås managed to escape the large corporations’ clutches and fly free.
With great precision and the keen eye of an eagle, Mats created animals in crystal. The collection of crystal animals was an instant success and was shipped worldwide from the Caribbean to the Arctic Circle. Mats has since gathered skilled craftsmen by his side, from glass workers who cast the glowing crystal in the heat of the furnace to the engraver whose steady hand carves the squirrel’s whiskers and tail. The respect for the human touch and the years of experience that no school in the world can teach is great.
Throughout his life, Mats has guarded Målerås by all means. Here under the wings of the hawk, Målerås Glasbruk has been given respite in times of economic turbulence. Mats’ heart for his home town, nature and freedom has shaped Målerås Glasbruk into what it is today. Målerås is the rare bird in the Kingdom of Crystal that has gone its own way with courage, sharpness and a sense of freedom.
MÅLERÅS DESIGNERS
MATS JONASSON’s talent as a designer attracted attention early on, when he started work as an apprentice engraver at the glassworks in 1959.
“Our forests have captured the hearts and minds of people since time immemorial”, says Mats. Inspired by the natural world around him, he has opened his mind to create his distinctive masterpieces in the finest Swedish crystal. Nowadays, this son of the glassworks is represented all over the world.

LUDVIG LÖFGREN has a long and solid education and experience of both art and glass handicraft. With his unique design he takes the traditional Swedish glass into the future. “The handicraft is, in all its parts, the way I express myself. It is visible in all I create,” says Ludvig Löfgren.
KLAUS HAAPANIEMI is an internationally acclaimed artist and designer currently living and working in Berlin, Germany. Haapaniemi’s approach is mainly based in narrative - each project possessing a rich story translated into the studio’s signature intricate prints.
Commercially, he has collaborated with a wide range of fashion and design brands, as well as leading visuals for custom-made events, performances and operas.
ROBERT LJUBEZ ended up in Sweden after escaping the horrors of war in Bosnia at the end of 1992. Experiences from engraving and drawing in combination with an artistic talent led to a job at the Glassworks in 1996. At first, Robert Ljubez worked as an engraver, but he soon became Mats Jonasson’s right hand man. Robert’s time at Målerås Glasbruk has provided him with invaluable knowledge of the unexpected possibilities there are in working with crystal.
MIRNES MUJKANOVIC originally hails from Bosnia, but since 2007 Sweden is his home. Mirnes started drawing at an early age, and with time became a skilful illustrator. He had long nurtured a dream of making a living of his talent. This lead him to apply for a position as an apprentice engraver at Målerås in 2019. At Målerås, Mirnes has been trained by our own master engraver Mats Jonasson. With his special talent for accuracy and sharpness, Mirnes was employed in 2021.
based design studio FÄRG & BLANCHE was founded in 2010 by the Swedish designer Fredrik Färg and designer Emma Marga Blanche, born in France. As a studio, they work across a wide variety of fields, collaborating with established furniture brands. Known for their experimental stance, where each expression informs the other, they effortlessly move between the exclusive hand made one off and the industrially produced, without ever losing their distinctive touch.
GUNILLA VON WERDER, a resident of the South Swedish city of Höganäs, is a maskmaker. She designs masks using an original technique developed in the 16th century, which she has refined over the years. Gunilla is educated in the fields of art and design in Florence, Italy.

Nature is present in every breath at the little glassworks on the edge of the forest. Mats Jonasson is a master of detail and, for more than 30 years, he has stamped his mark on the glassworks in Målerås, where the company stands for brilliant creativity. Mats Jonasson creates his work with inspiration from the forest, lakes and fauna – nature captured in crystal.
Målerås crystal finds its way out into the world, bearing messages from the landscape of Småland. An echo of the artist’s love of the forest and of the glassworkers’ skilful craft.
