“Being here by the ocean in Malibu. Living in this beautiful house that we built, that took so long to build. Being in my art studio, painting. Packing my bags tomorrow to go home to Kauai where we have a house. Which all sounds very grand, and I suppose it is, in some respects, but nothing comes from nothing. It all comes from hard work.” - Pierce Brosnan
The sound of waves crashing outside our window reminds us that summertime is upon us. As we gear up for vacation, camp, and play time, we must not forget it all comes from hard work. It is sometimes difficult to stay focused on the goals in front of us when we are reminded of the fun activities summer brings. As a Malibu resident, we know the luxury of summer fun, but not without first putting in the work to allow us these luxuries. This issue focuses on business people who are working hard to bring our community innovative resources, the latest in fashion, residential design, and beauty expertise. The Surfrider hotel has been entirely re-envisioned by a team with deep roots in the community, bringing a new, beautiful space to our coastline. If you are a longtime member of the Malibu community, you probably know Lyndie Benson. Lyndie’s eco-friendly luxury clothing line, Bleusalt, is keeping us cozy in this June gloom overcast. We are grateful to these Malibu creatives for keeping our city a leader in design. Our June issue begins with an informative story on the new Santa Monica College campus in the heart of Malibu. Our friends at Planet Blue show off their summer collection of Blue Life in floral prints and 70s vibe style. Punch up your beauty game with a trip to local favorite Tiffany RN, which specializes in injectable, get glowing skin with a facial at Cure Spa, or try out false lashes at Amazing Lash Studio Woodland Hills. Enjoy a jaunt on the Saddle Peak trail with breathtaking ocean and mountain views. Cholada, one of Malibu’s most beloved restaurants, provides deeper insight into their family background and how they have made their Thai hotspot a Malibu favorite. Lastly, we feature leading real estate professionals and homes that are breaking the mold in architecture and design. We hope you enjoy our third issue of the new Malibu Magazine. “WELL DONE” “Congratulations on another great issue of Malibu Magazine. I am honored to have contributed a small part to it.
My wife Jenny, who has lived here her whole life since 1963 is very much the old school Malibu Country Girl (we still have no TV and chickens in our yard), rarely likes the new modern magazines that are Malibu centric. Your magazine is a notable exception and she has been enjoying it and finding lots of good things she likes in it. That means your magazine has serious credibility in our home. She is the real thing. Well done and I look forward to your next issue. Thank you for contributing something that enhances the cohesion of our town and celebrates its many great attributes. - Rick Mullen, Mayor, City of Malibu “KEEP IT UP” “Loved the piece on paragliding. What a great view of Malibu! Keep it up.” - Emily Rayburn “REFRESHING” “Its really refreshing to read a magazine that focuses on the community. I really look forward to the new issue and can’t wait to see it continue to grow.” - Kevin
“RELEVANT AND IMPORTANT” “Glad you guys are covering topics like Dr. King providing healthcare to our homeless population. Relevant and important. I hope to read more pieces like this in the future.” - Ben Matthews “CONGRATULATIONS” “Congratulations to the editorial team. Another great issue full of beautiful photos and interesting Malibu topics.” - Julia McDonald “LOVE THIS ISSUE” “Love this issue!”
- March to the Top “FOR AND ABOUT THE COMMUNITY” “A magazine for and about the greatest community out there - MALIBU.
Malibu is not just unbelievably beautiful - it has a lot to offer. I am excited to read about it in the new magazine. Please continue the great work you are doing. Malibu finally got the magazine it deserves. !” - Bianca Gerber “CHRIS CORTAZZO” “Chris has been so good to my family over the years.” - Alia Surrec

20th Anniversary Chumash Day Powwow The annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering kicked off Saturday 14th at Malibu Bluffs Park. The celebration name xxxxxxxxxxx brought together members of the Chumash tribe, native to Malibu, along with other nearby tribes and spectators to join in festivities such as singing, dancing and socializing. The free two-day event commenced on Saturday with the Grand Entry (first dance), which was led by a tribal elder carrying the traditional Eagle Staff. Dancers decked in brightly-colored gowns and headwear moved to the sounds of rhythmic drumbeats. He is the owner of the Malibu Newsstand, a 25-year old business, which Schields said is “woven into the community.” Schields began working the register at the newsstand during his senior year at Pepperdine University. About 10 years ago, he and his wife, Tara, took over the business. “I do take a little bit of pride in being able to stick around this long,” Schields said. He attributes the newsstand’s longevity to the Malibu community. “Now with the decline of print media, so much of it is about local support. I feel like Malibuites certainly make a conscious effort to come in to support us and keep us here.” He is on a first-name basis with many of his customers. “People come in and say, ‘I remember coming here as a kid,’ and they’re adults now. Whole generations have passed through here.” Schields has four kids of his own, ranging from 3 to 13 years-old. “From time to time, I’ll bring my 3 year-old with me [to work] and I’ll read to her.” When Schields finds downtime, he enjoys being with his family, mountain biking and reading. “I don’t get a lot of down time [to read] here despite what one would think,” Shields jokes. MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Nathan Schields for his dedication to weaving the community together through print media and his passion for family and Malibu.
LUIS LOZA
One of Malibu’s Most Beloved Servers Life has a funny way of bringing people together, and for Luis Loza connections have always been built over a good meal. Moving to Southern California from Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1992, Loza soon began serving at Coogies in Malibu, which would eventually become Ollo, “I was visiting my brother. I didn’t know any English, but he said they needed help and invited me to work here.” Luis now is coming up on his 26th year at the restaurant, “Working six days a week, the restaurant is like my morning family, and my house is my afternoon family.” Not only are his coworkers like family but so is each table. “I serve you like I would my family. I love that I get to take care of people, and make sure people are happy and satisfied.” Moreover, Loza has truly become a part of many local families. “I have seen people go from dating to marriage, to having kids and then sending them to college. When they come back, I’m like ,‘Wow is that your little boy?’ Its crazy.” In his downtime, Loza enjoys spending time with his wife of 17 years and his four accomplished children. Speaking about his family Loza beams, describing his children’s involvement in the school swim and soccer teams and his oldest son’s recent graduation from Pennsylvania’s prestigious Haverford College. MALIBU MAGAZINE loves for Luis Loza for his friendly demeanor, lifelong dedication to the people of Malibu and for treating everyone that comes into Ollo like family.

PEOPLE WE LOVE MELISSA STALLINGS
Malibu Book Worm Melissa Stallings has been around books ever since she was a kid. “We would go to the Vons parking lot and there was the book mobile,” Stallings said. “My mom would take us there every two weeks.” Stallings is now going on her fourth year as the Community Manager of the Malibu Public Library. “[The library] has always been a part of my life,” she said. “I’ve always felt comfortable here and we want that for people.” Stallings has also always felt comfortable with the written word. She studied journalism at Abilene Christian University and was an editor for 10 years. “I decided I wanted to do something else and be in a place where I was assisting people and there were books around,” she said. Stallings worked for public libraries in Sacramento and Glendale before arriving at Malibu. “We get to know everyone who comes in and out in a way that you don’t really get in a central library.” Everyone is welcome at the library, she said. “For me, it’s a place that’s open to anyone, no matter who you are.” In her spare time, Stallings enjoys being with her family, going to Dodger games and reading as much as she can. MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Melissa Stallings for her inclusivity and for serving the Malibu community one book at a time.
JEFFERSON “ZUMA JAY” WAGNER
Serving Malibu One (Squeaky) Step at a Time Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s, the sand squeaked underneath people’s feet when they walked on the beach. “Every once in a while, if you find the right spot, you can still get the squeak,” Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner said. “I try to explain that to people because that represents the cleanliness of the ocean.” Wagner is the founder of Zuma Jay’s surf shop, which he started in 1975. “My greatest passion is the sport of surfing and I’ll always hold that as my greatest passion.” When he’s not in the shop, he can be found gardening, advocating for the environment, working with special effects on a Hollywood set, or serving as Malibu’s Mayor Pro Tem. When Wagner “started to see the loss of community about 15 years ago,” he decided he “wasn’t going to let the sense of community diminish” and ran for City Council. He was elected in 2008, served as Mayor from 2010-2011 and was reelected in 2016. “At this point in my life, my passion for the community is about awareness for this community’s future,” he said. “When I’m gone, I don’t want my footprint to be an ugly footprint. I want it to be one where a kid goes, ‘I heard from him the beach squeaks underneath your feet.’” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Zuma Jay for his lifelong passion for surfing, dedication to protecting the environment and his service to our community.

PEOPLE WE LOVE ELLEN SHANE
Encouraging Successful Middle-Schoolers Ellen Shane spends a lot of time in her daughter’s bedroom. She transformed Emily’s room into her office, similar to how she channeled her pain from the tragic death of her 13-year-old into action. “I felt compelled to do something,” said Shane, the founder and executive director of the Emily Shane Foundation. “The motivator was to keep Emily’s memory alive by helping other people with something that was significant to her.” The foundation helps middle school students attain their best academic potential. “The SEA Program is really what the foundation is now,” Shane said. “It stands for Successful Educational Achievement.” The program provides mentoring and tutoring to at-risk, failing middle schoolers who cannot afford help. “Any child that comes through the program learns about Emily because I want them to understand that she didn’t do well in school but she was smart,” she said. The program started in Malibu and is now in 12 locations with over 90 students. “I always tell the students, ‘It’s not because you’re not smart. The reason you’re here is because you have so much potential and no one’s helped you reach it.’” When Shane isn’t working or doing grief support, she reads, plays with her two Jack Russels, or mixes up her exercise routine. “With anything, it’s best to step away sometimes and recharge.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Ellen Shane for her ability to turn her pain into action by encouraging middle schoolers to attain their best academic potential.
SARAH CUNIN
Nurturing Our Youngest Director of Gan Preschool, co-director of Chabad Malibu and mother of nine, Sarah Cunin easily has one of the biggest hearts in Malibu. The personable Malibu resident of 23 years has been taking care of Malibu’s youngest ever since she her and husband, Rabbi Levi opened Gan Preschool some 20 years ago in an effort to stay more involved in their children’s lives. Through her dedicated care she has created a thriving preschool that fosters imagination and creativity with the goal of, “not putting any child into a mold,” Cunin said. She balances her work with raising her own children by combining her roles as mother and preschool director as much as possible, “I see every child as a little light,” she said. It is easy to tell that to the Cunins, family, faith and the Malibu community mean everything. They often blend all three together by inviting members of the preschool and the community into their home to celebrate Jewish holidays together. MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Sarah Cunin for her kind, passionate spirit and her dedication to providing Malibu’s younget with a place to grow and thrive.

ROBERT CHIMENTO
Generating Action Through Film Robert Chimento’s eyes sparkle as he discusses surfing, starry nights and meals from The Sunset Restaurant. Chimento faced numerous hardships in his journey from Brooklyn to Malibu. Following his father’s passing, he and his brother faced mafia threats to the family’s trucking business. Chimento knew he needed a different career. He started in the film industry where he held minor roles and his interest in screenwriting grew. Chimento saw the necessity of using his creativity to expose “off-center thinking.” Although he envisioned himself becoming “[one of] those guys on the surfboard that never leaves the beach,” Chimento only recently took up surfing, instead spending the majority of his time skiing. Chimento finds inspiration in the “place where greatness happens.” This year, he plans to make four new movies, including a lighthearted film about Malibu neighbors battling over a tennis court’s construction and a hard-hitting expose about the Genovese Crime Family of his hometown. “I try to tell the truth about what is happening in my environment.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Robert Chimento for his unique, truthful and meaningful approach to film.

TONY ‘RADFISH’ STEARNS
Making Our Boards by Hand Besides bubble gum pink walls and strings of neon lights, the inside of Radfish Malibu surf shop has over 800 surfboards, paddleboards and skateboards. “I started making the surfboards myself, I painted every piece of this store by myself, I do everything,” Tony Stearns, owner of Radfish Malibu said. Stearns grew up in Malibu and started surfing when he was 6 years old. His passion for riding waves inspired him to open his own shop last year. “I got hit by a dumb idea and ran with it,” Stearns joked. “It just snowballed and my business and life have grown so immensely.” When he’s not hand-making boards, Stearns is teaching others how to surf. “I have a passion for my work and that’s because I enjoy teaching.” He also enjoys playing the guitar, drums, bass and keyboard. “I call myself a 200 percent guy because I do everything with 200 percent effort.” His hard work extends to his work with non-profits such as the Wounded Warrior Project and donated surf lessons “to every school and fundraiser in town.” Despite all that he does, Stearns finds solace in the ocean. “The ocean to me is like my church. Without the ocean, I’m not sure what I would do.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Tony Stearns for his handmade boards, lively spirit and passion for teaching

SCOTT SUTPHEN
Malibu’s Healing Man Some 35 years ago, Scott Sutphen and his father Dick packed their bags along with their healing abilities to make the move from Arizona to Malibu. Sutphen explained that his father was a past life aggression hypnotherapist. “He had his fame in his own little way, just how everyone is kind of famous in Malibu.” In 1988, Dick passed the business on to Scott, and he has since continued to expand upon his father’s healing services. “We offer the community what they need to help themselves; the energy of a crystal, a really cool book, nice conversation, a perspective,” Sutphen said. “It’s really that simple.” Even people who don’t believe in the healing qualities of crystals come into the store, “for aesthetics. People want to make their home beautiful and so forth”. Sutphen loves the simple lifestyle that Malibu offers. In his free time, he and his wife of six years indulge in what he calls Malibu’s “perfect synergy of country, awareness and beautiful nature,” riding motorcycles, hanging out with their five dogs and most importantly, “loving each other. It’s a great life.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Scott Sutphen for taking care of the Malibu community whether through healing crystals or good conversation.
GEORGIENNE BRADLEY
The Little (Dedicated) Mermaid Georgienne Bradley’s office is underwater. “I feel as if I’ve been given a VIP pass to the ocean,” Bradley said. She is the founder and executive director of the local Sea Save Foundation. The foundation “strives to protect our oceans by raising awareness about the beauty of marine ecosystems and their fundamental importance to human survival.” Bradley is also a scientist, underwater photographer, videographer, writer and producer. She wrote two books, hundreds of written works about the ocean and produced ocean-themed television programming for multiple studios. “What I love doing most is being back in the ocean.” Her love for the sea began as a kid when she saw it on television. “It was so fascinating to me that this world could be explored.” Bradley has been exploring underwater since she received her diver’s certification in the ‘90s. In 2006, she was inducted into the Women Diver’s Hall of Fame. “It’s nice to give back and mentor the next generation,” she said. Despite a career splashed with accolades, she doesn’t lose sight of her mission. “Oceans are critical to our livelihood and we’re losing them. We need to modify our daily routine and we need to care.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Georgienne Bradley for her lifelong passion and dedicated pursuit to protect our oceans. SANTA MONICA COLLEGE
MALIBU’S NEW CAMPUS After years of delays, the city of Malibu has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art SMC satelite campus. Construction is set to begin in August 2018 and will bring a variety of classes as well as new sheriff substation to Malibu. ✎ written by Isabella Breda
A project years in the making is finally underway. Construction of the Santa Monica College Malibu satellite campus is expected to commence in August, with an expected completion date in the fall of 2020. Santa Monica and Malibu voters passed the bond Measure S to fund the construction back in 2004, allocating $25 million for the Malibu campus. The campus will be nestled in the three-acre lot across from Legacy Park, within the Civic Center Complex. There is currently a decommissioned sheriff’s station sitting on this property that will be replaced with a 27,500

The building will comprise six classrooms, as well as a computer lab and music/lecture hall that can accommodate 210 students. It will also house administrative offices. There will also be community facilities including a joint sheriff sub-station, and multipurpose community room that can be converted into an emergency operations center. An interpretive center to be paired with Legacy Park programs has also been proposed. The Malibu Community Labor Exchange will be relocated onto another spot on the site, and the accommodations for the Malibu Farmers Market are still being worked out. The landscape design by Quatro Design Group emphasizes the stunning views of the hills to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The design is environmentally conscious and is said to be a model for future Malibu developments, with landscaping to include permeable plants and soils, including native succulents to mitigate storm water in the winter. Not only is the landscaping going to be environmentally forward, it will be recreationally functional for both students and community members with scattered benches for lounging and an amphitheater to accommodate large outdoor events. Santa Monica College is eager to commence construction on the project as SMC Executive Vice-President Elaine Polachek, as well as many other SMC, LA County and Malibu leaders have worked hard on getting the multifaceted proj-

ect off the ground. Santa Monica College has been California’s #1 transfer college to the University of California system for 27 years straight. SMC is also the leader in transfers to the University of Southern California and Loyola Marymount University. As one of the most affordable options for a high-quality undergraduate education (costing just $46 per unit), it has played an integral role in creating opportunity for those from various socio-economic statues, including refugees as well as first year college students. Its growth from 129 students in its opening year of 1929 to now 33,000 students was one of the reasons to expand its campus to Malibu. The new Malibu campus is slated to offer courses ranging from computer to physical sciences, as well as emeritus and community education courses for professionals and older adults. The campus will provide an exceptional yet affordable college education to locals as well as invite a host of community events. The construction of the sheriff’s substation and interpretive learning center will also be beneficial in improving safety, and providing community space. The substation is a huge leap for Malibu, as the Lost Hills sheriffs who serve the community have been working out of the Calabasas location since the Malibu station was decommissioned in the 1990’s. This move has the potential to improve law enforcement response time and heighten community safety. Furthermore, the interpretive learning center adjunct to Legacy Park and will serve as an outstanding educational and cultural MM supplement.
ALL AGES Intended to accommodate up to 210 students, the campus will offer classes up to emeritus level. MALIBU MAGAZINE

alibu is small in size to begin with – but now it can fit inside of your closet. When Lyndie Benson, a 25year Malibu resident, received a sweatshirt from her friend as a gift, the real present was the idea Benson formed after feeling the fabric. “I felt the fabric and I thought, ‘I need to make something with this,’” Lyndie Benson said. She
came across a similar fabric called Lenzing Modal and thought to herself, ‘This is even better.’ The material is cultivated from sustainable botanic fibers of the beechwood tree. “I found Lenzing and Lenzing does everything right,” Benson said. “I thought, ‘I’m going to make a capsule collection, just a few pieces, between me and a friend.’ Then, it just happened. That’s it.” Inspired by the ocean, nature and her own wardrobe, Benson launched BLEUSALT, a season-less line of basics made
in the USA of exceptionally soft materials.. “You want to be comfortable when you’re walking on the beach and hiking and if you’re here in this community, dress is casual,” Benson said. “I still think it’s important to have your style and look the best you can. That’s what I was always trying to achieve, but with cashmere.” Benson’s wardrobe mainly consists of basics, and she said she drew inspiration for BLEUSALT pieces from some of her favorite designers, from The Row to Loro Piana and Bamford. “They’re very beautiful

and expensive luxury brands, but when you’re on the beach or in this climate, sometimes cashmere doesn’t feel great,” Benson said. “I think BLEUSALT works well for that.” BLEUSALT started in October 2017 founded upon a mission to elevate athleisure wear. “It’s different than wearing sweatpants out but you look elegant doing so,” Benson said. “We’re not really in a category because we’re an elevated luxury athleisure. We’re creating our own category.” The clothing line is also creating a new category of soft. “We have a feel-tobelieve campaign and people can get a swatch of this fabric sent to them for free to feel it,” she said. “People say, ‘It’s different from the other soft, it’s softer,’ and then they’ll buy it.” For Benson, BLEUSALT is all about the fabric. “Once I decided I wanted to do this, I started to go deep into the fabric and now I’m an expert,” she said. “I would never have predicted I’d be working with all this fabric in my life but here it is.” But Benson’s not the only one who’s fallen in love with the touch of BLEUSALT’s materials. “A lot of people want their favorite thing in this fabric,” she said. “That’s what the line is for me but other people want that for them. Once you wear [the material], you want everything in it. It’s really the truth. So many people have contacted me saying, ‘I have this dress that I love, is there a way that I could get it made out of that?’” In addition to her hands-on work with the fabric, Benson shoots all of the photography for the brand herself. “I think with photography, you can take your camera anywhere and be creative at any time,” she said. “All the creativity I ever had goes into it every day and it goes into one place. It’s fulfilling and exciting and the business is doing well and people are loving the product. There hasn’t been very much bad.” Benson says the young company already has a ton of exciting projects in the pipeline, from upcoming distribution in Europe, to a new collaboration with her friend Cindy Crawford on a new Cindy pant. “Every day I’m just flabbergasted,” Benson said. “I’m offered to be in a lot of stores but it’s too soon for me. INNER GARDENS
The Perfect Summer Garden
S
ummer is fast approaching, so this is the time to prepare your interior and exterior spaces for a perfect Malibu summer. Bring character and beauty to your interiors and garden by including artful pieces, such as exciting and unusual antiques from around the world—curated by Inner Gardens. Is there anything more wonderful than a lush Malibu garden? For an outdoor space with grand elegance and classic style, consider adding Lemon Pots and Swirl Planters (as Khloe Kardashian did at her home in Calabasas). These pieces
make a statement while also fitting into a variety of settings. The addition of a fountain or water feature creates a sense of tranquility and relaxation through both sight and sound. The Lion Fountain and Trough has clean, angular lines combined with a traditional lion’s head spitter. And don’t forget your seating! You and your guests will appreciate a place to sit, cocktail in hand while enjoying the garden. The Broad Bench adds an ultra modern look that will age beautifully as your garden matures. Summer is a wonderful time to bring your home to life. Enhance your existing interior design and architecture with liv-
ing sculptures—such as orchids, specimen trees, and succulents—in the perfect pot or planter. If you are concerned about maintenance, watering, and trimming, Inner Gardens includes these in their ongoing maintenance services. Inner Gardens provides art for the garden and home, and the Malibu showroom features an impressive global collection of furnishings and accessories from antique to modern. INNER GARDENS

both beautiful and welcoming. A beautiful floral arrangement or custom artificial tree can do more for a home’s decor than even new furniture can, at a fraction of the cost. Here at Aldik Home, we love to inspire our customers with our passion for beautiful silk flowers and accessories.” Whether you want to do it yourself or let the talented and experienced design team do it for you, Aldik Home’s passion for everything from outdoor furniture to silk florals and Christmas decor sure to inspire you. The artificial cacti and succulent plants at Aldik Home are inspired by nature’s most durable plants. From yuccas to echeverias, these hardy plants in the cactus family can be used in a variety of ways. They can be combined to form an artificial succulent arrangement, or used to complement a floral arrangement to give it more depth and sophistication. “Our favorite way to accent an orchid arrange-
ment is to cluster a few small succulents such as agave, barrel cactus, or sedum at the base,” Larry says. Nature’s most forgiving plants have inspired the most versatile artificial plants. See for yourself how Aldik silk foliage sets the standard in quality. Aldik home doesn’t stop at artificial florals though. Even at first glance, it’s hard to deny that Aldik Home’s line of Summer Classics patio furniture is stunning. Whether it’s the natural beauty of teak, the smooth, clean lines of extruded aluminum, or the gorgeous striations of the woven resin, the pieces are beautiful. Not only does the high-quality outdoor furniture look great, but it is also crafted to the highest standards, guaranteeing a fabulous outdoor space for years to come. Quality outdoor furniture has never been so easy to customize. Each piece is made to order according to your preferences. With more than 140 fabric

hen he was first learning to surf, Matthew Goodwin dreamt of Northern California. For years he’d heard word of the infamous swells up North, miles of coast he pictured as “more adventurous” than the waves he’d grown up next to in Ventura. Still a beginner, though, his mother had expressly forbidden rougher waters until he had completed his Junior Lifeguard training. So instead Goodwin headed a few miles down the coast to Malibu, and was soon frequenting a stretch of beach just west of the Pier, a friendly spot where novices and pros alike shared some of the best breaks in the area. “[That]

as an apartment complex. Further complicating matters was the fact that not an inch more of space could be added; permits only allowed for construction within the footprint of the existing structure. In the face of such strict confines, Goodwin, Zampedri and Crowther soon recognized they’d have to approach their substantial renovations with a strong dose of ingenuity. The team began consulting with with local companies including architect Doug Burdge, whose firm Burdge & Associates had been behind prominent Malibu projects such as the Trancas shopping mall redesign, and Nathan Jones and Matt Strangeway of Jones Builder Group, who would oversee daily construction. As interiors were gutted, the building’s massive potential soon became clear. From common areas to the guest rooms, plans were drawn up that entirely repurposed the existing space, better utilizing every foot. A forgotten attic above the old manager’s unit was blown out, making way for a bright, intimate room that would eventually become a library above the reception area. The outdoor walkways between rooms, initially placed on the ocean-side, were redesigned to run on the mountain-side of the building, allowing for unobstructed ocean views and private balconies for each room. And while the number of hotel rooms remained unchanged, at 20, interiors were completely redone, ceilings in each heightened by feet, carpeted floors replaced with elegant reclaimed teak, bathrooms outfitted with ceramic tile and luxurious rainfall showers. “Materials were

DESIGN FORWARD Interiors were designed with an eye towards achieving a classic beachy California aesthetic, utilizing a subdued, relaxing palette and high-quality materials.
LOCAL EFFORT Much of the bedroom and rooftop furniture was custom-designed by Malibu Market and Design’s Eytan Levin. Crowther picked up unique pieces from Belgium to Japan to round out design.

chosen to create a tactile, sensory environment which is grounding and feels like home,” said Goodwin. “The colors and tones were extrapolated from the surroundings and applied across everything from architecture to furniture. Light woods resemble sand and earth. Subtle sages and tones of blue were woven in to reflect the local vegetation and ocean. Warm whites were chosen to create a sense of calm. It feels natural, organic and like it has been there for many years, which is the same to say for the coastline and mountains.” As construction continued, one of the biggest obstacles arose from the team’s desire to have food service available to guests, complicated by the fact that the existing structure didn’t include any sort of open space large enough to fit a restaurant, and that even if it had, they wouldn’t have been able to open one. The property, zoned as a motel, didn’t allow for public restaurant service, a principal difference between hotel and motel zoning restrictions. So the team began thinking outof-the-box once again, soon realizing the roof presented a veritable goldmine of both space and spectacular views of the ocean and Malibu pier. Plans were soon underway for a rooftop dining area with food only available to hotel guests, which fit within zoning parameters. A farm-fresh, organic menu was put together featuring food and drinks with a local edge, sourcing ingredients and produce from Malibu’s own One Gun Ranch and local farmers

In Thailand Theprian eventual-
ly came to own her own food kiosk, but always dreamt of more. In 1995 she immigrated, and soon landed a job at Thai restaurant Noodle World in Southern California. She soon developed a connection with the only other chef at the restaurant, fellow Thai expat Nikorn Sriwichailumpan, who had immigrated in 1993, with the two soon becoming a couple, and eventually marrying. After a few years at Noodle World, the couple heard of an opportunity to own their own restaurant in Boston and soon made a cross-country road trip. “When we got there, we found out there were
no chances of owning a restaurant,” she said. “Also, Boston was too cold.” The couple returned to California when a friend called. “She said if I wanted to own a restaurant, I should come to Florida,” Theprian said. “She said it would be easier to own a restaurant there than in California.” In 1998, the couple hit the road again and traveled to Florida. Theprian said she knew people there who told her they would sell a restaurant to her with a contract. “When we got there, they didn’t do anything,” she said. The couple realized the deal unfortunately went sour. “We lost $10,000 and the owner kept the

The two became the chefs of Cholada Thai Beach Cuisine in 1999. “The previous owner gave us the opportunity to work,” she said. “We were the chefs for a year.” When the owner ultimately decided to sell Cholada, he approached the couple. “Because we worked so hard, he let us own the restaurant,” she said. Despite their earlier trials, the couple achieved their dream and have owned Cholada since 2000. “I’m very proud when someone asks me where I own my restaurant and I say Malibu,” she said. “They always go, ‘Wow!’” Her husband still cooks in the kitchen every day, while Theprian serves the food. “If my husband is not very, very sick, he’s going to be here every day,” she said. “He wants to make sure everything is perfect for the customer. We always put the customer first.” Cooking for their customers sometimes reminds them of their childhood in Thailand, when they cooked for their big families and fell in love with making food. “When the people love our food, that is the best reward,” Theprian said. “When customers say, ‘Hey chef! All of their effort goes into preparing the food and running the establishment. Theprian even created all of the recipes on the menu herself. “I had to adjust to the taste for Americans though because they can’t take the spiciness,” she said with a laugh. Customers can still get their fix of spice with menu items such as the Spicy Glass Noodle Salad, served with shrimp, ground chicken, glass noodle onion and vegetables in a lime chili dress-

The freshness can be tasted in Cholada’s traditional favorites such as Buddha’s Feast, served with fresh veggies stir-fried in an exotic brown sauce, Gaiyang (Thai Barbeque Chicken), which is a marinated half chicken served in Cholada’s homemade sweet sauce, and Pad Thai, made with rice noodle, egg and bean sprout. Their two daughters, 27 and 28, help their parents in the restaurant while their niece recently came to America with the family’s help. With all it takes to run a restaurant, Theprian said she is also going to school to improve her English because in Thailand, she couldn’t speak the language at all. “I never stop learning,” Theprian said. “I understand more than I thought.” This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise though, considering Theprian and Sriwichailumpan understand how to MM achieve their dreams.

Fossil Ridge is visible from Saddle Peak and and Piuma Ridge to the west. There is limited parking in the unmarked dirt lot on Piuma Road. The Piuma Ridge entrance is perfect for hikers who enjoy lengthier, more gradual climbs. From the entrance, the trek is roughly nine miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of nearly 2,000 feet. This route includes a traverse through various ecosystems including vibrant meadows with chirping songbirds, as well as dark, cool and damp riparian areas full of amphibious creatures. The Fossil Ridge entrance begins from Stunt High Road and adds 2.5 miles to the round-trip route from Calabasas. The Fossil Ridge entrance showcases even more expansive view across the region, but with a greater focal point over Calabasas and surrounding urban areas. The Saddle Peak region also features various equally popular ridge hikes such as Piuma Ridge Trail, Eagle Rock and Mesa Peak Motorway. These trails consist of roughly 12 miles and feature similar climate and natural amenities as the Saddle Peak hike. These trails are accessible from the Saddle Peak trailhead and their individual trailheads off Las Virgenes Road and Topanga State Park. Espinoza recommends Eagle Rock at Topanga State Park for its “unique rock formations and nice 360-degree view of the mountains and ocean.” Finally, she suggests this hike during the summer when it allows for more shade and downhill ocean breezes. When adventuring to Saddle Peak, it is highly recommended to bring a daypack of supplies since the area is perfect for lengthier exploration. hat a feeling! My whole body starts to tingle! While it doesn’t hurt, it is a bizarre sensation to have an electrical current pulsing through your body every few seconds. The muscles contract and start to shake. As we begin our session, Manduu manager and personal trainer, Jason Hickey, turns on the EMS device that is connected to me via electrodes. While the electricity is pulsing through me, Jason asks me to mimic his motions and exercises. For 20 minutes we do squats, lunges, bicep curls and other muscle-building exercises. 20 minutes can feel pretty long. At the start of every session, Manduu takes your complete body measurements. This full-body analysis-system, InBody, lets you quickly see improvements in fat percentage, muscle mass, and water weight. Especially useful to know is how much visceral fat you have, as cardiologists will warn you that too much of this fat type can lead to heart attacks. InBody sends all your measurements directly to your phone through its app so you can easily track them from week to

The studio is operated by husband and wife duo Jason and Wilbirg Hickey. Even from far away, it’s is easy to spot by its bright green OUR SPECIAL TIP

week. “EMS has many benefits, the main one being that it attacks the fast-twitch muscles directly where the fat burning occurs,” Hickey said. “Many people cannot activate these on their own for various reasons. Being able to do a 15 to 20minute workout while working both slow and fast-twitch muscles simultaneously is what separates EMS training from conventional workouts.” While EMS training will quickly help you build muscle and get toned, it is important to note that it does not replace cardio-training. Especially if your goal is weight loss supplementing EMS training with cardio such as running, walking, biking or swimming can be extremely beneficial. In our ex-
perience, EMS builds muscle mass in less time than other forms of training. This is why there are already hundreds of thousands of people who use EMS training in Europe. Celebrities, models and top athletes swear by it. Even Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world, uses EMS training to stay in top shape. Even though celebrities are frequent users, EMS training is especially great for the average person. It is even ideal for people with back pain and seniors with muscle atrophy. In fact, EMS training originated in the rehab industry and is often used after injuries to build back muscles. The quick results EMS training can quickly provide make it somewhat addictive. Currently the franchise is working on expanding their presence in the U.S. Manduu opened their first stateside studio in Miami, and along with the Santa Monica location currently have a third studio in Franklin, Tennessee. EMS will undoubtedly play a role in the future of fitness, even if today’s techniques leave some room for improvement. The next generation of EMS is said to be cable-free, which will help streamline the technique. Perhaps the biggest current downside, however, is the price tag; twice a week sessions at Manduu will cost you $300 per month. However, the price becomes well worth it once you see MM your results.

DR. LISA BENYA’S
SUMMER SECRETS Long beach days might be good for the soul, but they can also take a toll on your skin. We turned to Dr. Lisa Benya, founder of CURE Salon & Spa, for some of her own secrets to help keep your face healthy and radiant all summer long.
T
o brighten up your skin, exfoliating is key. Over time your body sheds dead skin cells and if they aren’t removed, they can lead to dull, dry, and flaky skin. How often you should exfoliate this summer depends on how often you’re out in the sun. Removing the dead skin cells removes your skin’s protective layer, and as a result, it can increase your sun sensitivity and make you more prone to burn. “As the weather gets warmer, exfoliating once or twice a week should be enough to remove buildup.” Dr. Benya says. “I use a Gommage Exfoliating Gel by Sonage, it brightens and clarifies dull skin, eliminating dead surface skin, and leaving you with a healthy glow”. A

good face polish or scrub can also unclog pores, helping your creams hydrate your skin more deeply. With this new layer of
skin exposed, be sure to apply sunscreen daily. If you want to amp up your sun protection, Vitamin C can help maximize your skin’s protection when used in addition to your sunscreen. Dr. Benya recommends her medical-grade Vita-CE w/ Ferulic Acid Serum which can be found at Cure Spa, “Vitamin C reverses the signs of aging by increasing collagen production while providing super antioxidant protection.” Benya says. “It’s used to correct hyperpigmentation and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.” Vitamin C helps neutralize free radicals that lead to premature signs of aging, and when used in the evening it can help fight post sun-damage as well. ty of water is the easiest way to keep skin hydrated, but during the drying months of summer, a light nourishing moisturizer can help replenish your skin and lock in moisture without feeling too thick. A moisturizer with SPF is ideal during the day, rain or shine. Broad spectrum sunscreen is our best defense against the sun’s rays, even during the typical gloom of June. “I trade in foundation for a tinted sunscreen that is moisturizing and protecting,” Dr. Benya said. “My go-to is Skinmedic Total Defense and Repair, which absorbs quickly and also restores your skin.” Dr. Benya recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least thirty, which blocks ninety-seven percent of the sun’s UVB rays. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours if you’re hitting the beach or the pool! To remove cellular damage and encourage healthy new rejuvenated skin, Dr. Benya suggests regular facials. “Once a month, I get a Detox Stem Cells Facial. It features the latest in skincare technology rejuvenating the skin in just one treatment using stem cells cultured from the Super Patagonia Maqui Berry. Fine lines, wrinkles, and pores are minimized and your skin is left brighter, hydrated, and perfected.” For deeper skin damage, Dr. Benya suggests IPL or Fractional Laser Resurfacing treatments to promote healthy skin renewal. IPL is short for Intense Pulsed Light and can be used to improve a variety of skin problems from broken capillaries, sun spots, and freckles. It specifically targets brown and red pigments. Fractional Laser Resurfacing reduces wrinkles and other skin irregularities that are often caused by sun damage, removing layers of skin tissue in a fractionated method, reducing the downtime needed for rejuvenation and getting you out of the shade and back into the sun in no MM time. THE FACE OF BEAUTY Nurse Tiffany’s renowned Beverly Hills practice, Beauty by Tiffany RN, has long been a go-to spot for expert beauty treatments.
N
urse Tiffany’s Beverly Hills practice, Beauty by Tiffany RN, is known for treating everyone from local celebrities and Instagram models to soccer moms and NFL cheerleaders seeking incredible results that are customized for each individual’s unique needs. Nurse Tiffany is excited the demand for gentle and precise dermal fillers has led to the opening of a second location in the Calabasas area. We sat down with her for an overview of her practice, treatments and a look at what new patients can expect. Can you briefly describe how you came to be an aesthetic Nurse? I grew up surrounded by very feminine women. My grandmothers always prided themselves on their beauty regimens, and my mother always had the latest makeup and tricks. At the same time, my step-bother and stepfather are both doctors so I was exposed to medicine at a very young age. After moving to Los Angeles, I worked with a very prestigious plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. As soon as I entered the operation room, I was hooked. I wasn’t sure in what capacity I would pursue a
career in the industry, but I was mesmerized by the precision, skill and craft. After a few years, non-invasive procedures started gaining popularity, and I realized I had a lot of model girlfriends that were big fans of these revolutionary anti-aging options. I was originally pursuing Kinesiology, but the switch to aesthetic nursing came as an “Aha moment” and I never looked back.
People often wonder if their skin will look worse after a treatment of Botox/ Dysport or dermal fillers. Is that possible? People often start these treatments as a preventative measure. By beginning before it is fully needed, we have seen monumental results in preventing the normal genetic and age related rhytid formation (wrinkles). Treatments with dermal fillers have the added benefit of stimulating your own collagen production. This is often observed as the patient finds they need fewer products less frequently. Regular treatments with Botox or Dysport can reduce the strength and size of the muscle that is injected. This has been well studied and documented, and I have spoken to numerous patients who attest they look much smoother and softer today than they did years ago. I would say that patients certainly love their treatments, and once they get accustomed to their new “refreshed” look, they usually are hesitant to stop treatments. How long can one expect either treatment to last? Results from your treatment with Botox/ Dysport should last anywhere from three to four months. Dermal filler results will last between six to 12 months, depending on the type of filler selected.

‘monumental results’ from beginning treatments as a preventative measure.
I really love augmenting the lips and cheeks, and I pride myself in doing it in such a way that is notably gentler than most. I find with this gentle approach, I am achieving not only high patient satisfaction, but fewer traumas to the tissue are in turn producing superior bruise free results. What age group do you treat most frequently? My patients range in age from 18-81. I’m able to identify where each one is in the aging or prevention process, and am able to achieve the vastly different results each one desires.
upon request) in order to obtain the best results. The most common side effects of injections are swelling and bruising, and these items contribute to thinning the blood and therefore bruising. I also would recommend not going straight from the gym to your appointment. In my opinion, it is better to give your blood pressure and heart rate some time to cool down before injecting. Ultimately, it is the patient’s choice, but knowledge is power, and I want all my patients to get the best results possible. MM

The extensions vary in length and thickness to naturally enhance existing lashes, and are attached individually to each natural lash. Amazing Lash Studio Woodland Hills also offers 3D and 6D volume lashes, which are multiple extensions that are attached together and fan out to give a fuller, more voluminous lash line. “Eyelash extensions are new to many of our guests,” said Lisa. “We understand the unknown can be intimidating. But it’s actually a relaxing, enjoyable experience. Our guests love their visits because it’s one of the few times they can just escape from their daily routine and relax. It’s like visiting a spa. In fact, since your eyes are closed for the duration of the appointment, many of our guests simply drift off for a ‘lash nap’.” Since regular refills are recommended every two to three weeks to replace natural lash loss and maintain a full, thick set of lashes, Amazing Lash Studio Woodland Hills offers two monthly maintenance programs. The basic Maintenance Program consists of one lash refill per month for $69.99, and the Twice As Amazing Program consists of two lash refills per month for $119.99. Both programs include member discounts on additional services and products as well as other benefits. “It is said that the eyes are the windows to your soul,” says Steven, “let us enhance your MM eyes, so your soul shines.”

HEAD OF SCHOOL Robert T. Black has been with Oaks Christian since 2015. He continues to focus the school on being one of the best private, college preparatory schools in Los Angeles and Ventura County through academic excellence, artistic expression and athletic distinction among its students.
OAKS TEACHERS are dedicated to inspiring learning among students. The small class sizes and student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1 help students prosper and gain admission to colleges around the U.S.
O
aks Christian School, founded in 2000, is a non-denominational, co-ed, college-preparatory school serving grades 5 through 12. Oaks puts a lot of effort into prepping students for the rigorous process of getting accepted into some of the best colleges in the country. Classes are small, with an average class size of 18, giving students the opportunity to interact closely with and learn from their teachers and classmates. Students are encouraged to take various Advanced Placement courses throughout their time there, ranging from AP Literature to AP Chemistry, a class known for being notoriously difficult but also rewarding on the Oaks campus. These classes give
high school students the opportunity to gain college credits before ever setting foot on a college campus. The effort has shown to pay off as an impressive 99% of Oaks graduates receive college admission and 41% end up attending highly selective schools such as Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton and Stanford. As a Christian school, Oaks puts a strong emphasis on giving back to the community. Collectively, the Class of 2017 performed over 15,000 hours of community service in nine different countries, partnering with organizations such as The American Cancer Society, James Storehouse Foundation and Children of the Nations. Oaks encourages students to partic-

These mission trips not only benefit the countries visited but also broaden student’s perspectives on the world. When it comes to competitive sports, Oaks Christian is known to be one of the best schools in the area. Oaks participates in an impressive 22 different sports with 48 different sport teams between its middle and high school. Together these teams have earned 147 league titles, 43 CIF titles and six California state titles. Out of the Class of 2017, 50 students are continuing on and playing sports at the collegiate level. For students more interested in arts, Oaks Christian has plenty to offer as well.
The visual and performing arts departments stage numerous performances and exhibits throughout the year. Students practice long, hard hours prior to performance and in return many have garnered prestigious awards. Looking to the future, Oaks will open an IDEA lab (Innovation, Design, Engineering and Aeronautics) in the fall of 2018. The central hub of this new space is the 4,000 square foot lab housing metal and wood fabrication machines, a VEX robotics lab, and 3D printers. The five classrooms include: physics, robotics, electrical engineering, computer science and a flex classroom. Students will be able to make robots, aerial and underwater drones, rockets, and even basic prosthetics. Seniors will have the opportunity to complete a Capstone Project through the IDEA lab.
The school is also adding a residential hall to its campus. Approximately 160 domestic and international students will be able to live in gender-specific dormstyle housing. The residential hall will state-of-the-art computer, game, study and lounge areas and a high-tech security MM system.

F
or as long as they can remember, Joe and Catherine Mathews have loved watching movies. Growing up in a family with Hollywood roots that go back a generation, Catherine, now 18, and Joe, 16, were exposed to an array of genres and filmmakers from an early age, everything from classic documentaries to cult horror. “All across the board, just good movies,” Catherine said. “And we grew up admiring the industry, and culture in itself. So it’s in our blood for sure.”
MUSIC Catherine plans on persuing her love of music as much as possible.
The siblings’ affinity for film would soon manifest in divergent ways. By the age of 4 Catherine was combining her passions for both film and music, recreating film scores on her piano, and eventually composing her own scores. Joe became interested in producing and directing from an early age as well, after helping his older brother, Justin, film a school project when he was just 6 years old. And if Joe and Catherine ultimately embarked on different creative paths within the form, their shared passion for film has allowed for some incredible collabo-

Game, Catherine began working with Joe in a process both described as seamless. “I just told her the feel I wanted and she did everything else,” he said. “It was perfect.” Fillmore would be accepted at a number of festivals, eventually win Catherine Best Original Score at the LA Film Festival and win Joe Best Student Film by the Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival. Nearly a year later Joe is already deep in production of his second film, a documentary entitled From the Land of In-Between which follows his good friend Semusu as he returns to Uganda for the first time since being adopted at 9 years old. 25% done with the rough cut, Joe says he’s excited by how the film is turning out. As is Catherine, who’ll be contributing an original score, and serving as music supervisor. Looking ahead, both Catherine and Joe say more collaborations are surely on the horizon. And with an actress sister, Rachel, and writer/actor brother Justin, who’s to say future projects won’t become even more of a family affair? “I think because of how artistic all our siblings are and how well we work together, we could be embarking on some huge group projMM ects,” said Catherine.

DYLAN’S TRAIL MIX
For the past five years, 10-year-old Dylan Friedman Almond has been on a mission years to care for Malibu’s local homeless population with her homemade bags of delicious granola.

retzels, chocolate, almonds, peanuts and tiny pieces of dried mangos. Those are the ingredients in 10-year-old Dylan Friedman Almond’s favorite trail mix recipe. But the recipe isn’t intended for her – it’s for the homeless population in her local community. “At my local preschool, they serve the homeless at Thanksgiving,” Dylan Friedman Almond said. “I asked my mom, ‘What are they going to eat after this?’ She didn’t know, so I came up with the idea of making trail mix for them to bring back.” Friedman Almond started the Dylan’s Trail Mix Project when she was just 5-years-old. Every Thanksgiving, she makes bags of trail mix and hands them out to the homeless and those in need at the Methodist Church. “It makes me really happy, especially when I go to give out the trail mix,” Dylan said. “I know I’ve done the right thing and all the work I put into it was worth it.” When she began the project, her teachers and peers at Juan Cabrillo Elementary School donated ingredients and helped Dylan assemble the bags. When she moved to a new school in second grade, Westland, she started to donate the biodegradable bags to Hope Gardens, an LA-based homeless charity. “With my trail mix, there’s always a nice note saying something encouraging,” Dylan said. “I want [those in need] to know people love them because all they really need is love.” At last year’s event, Dylan saw someone walking around with a note from the previous year taped to his

shirt.“That made me really happy,” she said. This year, Trader Joe’s helped donate the ingredients and Dylan and her friends made 270 bags of trail mix. “We got donations this year and Trader Joe’s helped us with that,” she said. “The manager thought my idea was cool so they gave us two big bags of food to help.” Dylan also launched her own website in the hopes of spreading her idea. “The rea-
son I made the website was because I want other kids to do this in their local communities with their schools so they can help their homeless and those in need,” she said. With the help of her friend, Friedman Almond created a how-to video on her website for viewers to learn how to start their own trail mix projects. “I want to start uploading more content on my website on a regular basis,” Friedman Almond said. With the start of middle school soon approaching, Friedman Almond plans to share her project with her soon-to-be new classmates. “There are over 1,000 kids [at Viewpoint School] so we’d be able to make a lot of food,” she said. The Malibu community recognized her hard work this year by presenting her with the Dolphin Award, making her the youngest-ever honoree. Local publications such as the Malibu Times and Malibu Surfside News have also highlighted her project over the years. “It’s been really fun and it’s made me proud and happy for Dylan,” her mother, Dana Friedman said. “I think it’s really exciting and empowering when you have an idea and see it come to fruition with such a positive response – whether it’s from people receiving the food, or the community that’s been so supportive.” When Friedman Almond doesn’t have her hands full with trail mix, she can be found singing, playing the ukulele, piano and drums, surfing, playing with her dog and hanging out with her friends and family. “When I grow up, I want to be a singer but I still want to do things for the homeless and those in need in the community,” Dylan said. s the owner of a vacation home, Ryan Danz knows well the myriad issues and headaches which can arise when renting out a second property. Danz, a San Diego native, spent years relying on a makeshift team of local cleaners and handymen to tend to his Lake Tahoe vacation home, heading all the managerial and operational responsibilities asso-
ciated with the property’s numerous yearly rentals by himself, from his primary home hundreds of miles away. Already exhausted and frustrated by this process, Danz said the last straw came in 2014 when a team of developers who had rented his Lake Tahoe house for the weekend sent Danz a worried text at 11 p.m. upon their

HOMES From Malibu to Los Angeles, Palm Springs, San Diego, and Lake Tahoe to San Fransisco Air Concierge represents homeowners all across California.
SEAMLESS Air Concierge works hard to make the process as seamless as possible for both homeowners and renters.
WHAT YOU AIRBNB NEED TO KNOW: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: While cities from Paris to New York have enacted major restrictions on Airbnb hosts, Los Angeles has been slow to pose many rules on the home sharing service. However on May 3 of this year, the LA City Council backed a new set of proposed regulations on short term rentals. We sat down with Air Concierge’s Ryan Danz for the major takeaways of the proposed rules. • • •
120 Night Cap Under the proposed regulations, hosts will only be able to rent out their home 120 days out of the year. >30 Need Not Apply Any reservations over 30 nights aren’t counted towards the 120 night limit. Primary Residences Only Homeowners will only be able to rent out their primary residences, not vacation homes or investment properties.
which might have arisen. “We have local staff at every home, and that’s not just cleaners and handymen,” Danz said. “That’s actual Air Concierge staff who go in and out of the property between reservations and truly understand the homes. They’re the eyes and ears of the owners, and I think that’s important because often our competitors are relying just on cleaners to report back. That’s just not good enough in our minds.” Danz said it’s dedication which has earned trust of hundreds of California property owners over the last three years. “I think that’s what makes us better, communicating with our owners on a higher level,” he said. “That’s how they can go around the world and leave their homes to us. While they’re not [actually] at their MM property, they have the next best thing.”

Because of his engineering background Ferrie was familiar with the malleability of copper tubing, and ultimately created a beautiful lighting element from the material. “When people saw it they would ask where we got it, and the idea for Lightsculptures started there,” Ferrie said. Soon Ferrie was selling his pieces to homeowners and designers, and Lightsculptuers were being featured in some of the most beautiful

Ferrie’s designs can be found in the Tasting Room at the Four Seasons Westlake Village and the Stonehaus Winery at the Westlake Village Inn, as well as San Diego’s trendy La Pensione Hotel. Ferrie’s pieces were also featured in the 2015 Met Loft Apartment at the Dwell on Design Show in Los Angeles. Currently pieces are sold in A Beautiful Mess Home, in Agoura’s Whizin Center, but the majority of Ferrie’s pieces are custom orders from online. All pieces are handmade from copper tubing, and can be finished to match any paint, and take generally 7-10 days to create. LAST, BUT NOT LEAST
5 QUESTIONS FOR …
LOST HILLS SHERIFF’S DEPT. CAPTAIN JOSH THAI Malibu Magazine sits down with Captain Josh Thai to discuss some of the biggest challenges and most notable achievments of his tenure thus far.
1
What is the biggest difference between working in Malibu and a more metropolitan area like L.A.? Every place you work is a little bit different. I have worked in several different stations but by far, in this area, the communities are the most supportive. From businesspeople to city and government officials, everyone is very pro-law enforcement. Compared to other areas, the crime rate is low, however, property crime is high because you have visitors that come here and leave things exposed, not expecting anything to be stolen. Allin-all the biggest thing that stands out is the support of the community.
2
What are your main concerns on an average day? In this area, it’s the little things. If you look at PCH it’s the main throughroute for Malibu residents. Traffic is our biggest concern and we have to try to monitor that. One of the things I coordinate with all the other agencies [is that] when something does happen is that notifications get passed to the community. This way people can alter their routes or leave earlier, whatever the case may be.
3
What is the most challenging aspect of your work? Part of my job is ensuring we take care of the deputies and that their needs are met, from their equipment to their
families. I have approximately 150 people at this station. I’m constantly trying to instill my philosophy of how I want things done in my staff. However, just like with herding sheep, there are always a couple that are going to run off so you’re constantly trying to herd them back in the right direction.
4
How does your department work to address the growing homeless population? We work with the city to address the problem. When there is a place like Malibu, that provides homeless people with services, they are going to be here, so for
us its a balance of law enforcement and helping them.
5
What achievement are you most proud of? I never expected that I would become a captain. Especially being a captain here at this station, I’m technically the chief of police for five cities. I think it is the most honorable thing. Coming over here as an immigrant, and being first a refugee, to now a police captain at one of the most prestigious stations is unbelievable. Sometimes I still can’t believe it. As a deputy, my goal was to pursue major crimes. I wanted to go after the Asian gangs and that’s what I enjoyed. I never thought I would be promoted, let alone be a captain. I have a lot to be thankful for. My success is not because of me, it is because of all the hardworking people at the station who supported me. There are just great people here. Visit malibumag.com to read the full interview.
MM
CAPTAIN THAI has been with the Sheriff’s Department since 1993. Throughout his time as a field sergeant, watch commander and now police captain, he has won numerous awards, such as the Distinguished Service Award.
