LETTER FROM THE EDITORS
Julie Wuellner
Holly Bieler
As summer slowly draws to a close and fall is in the air, we wrap up our 5th issue under new ownership and I am once again amazed at all Malibu has to offer. Each issue the magazine has grown with stronger editorial coverage centered all around our hometown and an increase in some of the best clients we could ask for. We truly could not be more thankful for all the support and positive feedback we have gotten from the community. What inspires us as a magazine, more so than than Malibu’s thriving restaurants, locally-owned stores and the multi-million dollar homes, is the people behind these ventures. One of those people is acclaimed (and local) architect Doug Burdge, who we had the opportunity to interview for this issue. You might know Burdge for his work re-designing the Trancas Shopping Center, the Native Hotel and of course the recently opened Surfrider Hotel. But Burdge’s ties to Malibu extend far beyond his work as an architect. He and his wife, Laura, are long-time Malibu residents of 30 years who raised their children in this very community and own MaliBU Beach House, which Burdge lovingly describes as one of Malibu’s mom-and-pop shops. While this past summer brought us many dreamy, sun-filled beach days, it unfortunately also brought a steady increase in traffic and an abundance of collisions on PCH. We see this problem occur every year, however, many residents fear that Malibu’s traffic situation is getting worse and worse. I have always believed that to fix a problem, you must first understand it. For the last couple of issues, this search for understanding and the desire to see a safer PCH compelled us to investigate some of the sources and possible solutions to the problems PCH faces. With our findings, we created a special series titled, The PCH Report (page 88). This issue we focus in on proposed and theoretical solutions, from designing a ferry and/or shuttle system to limiting commercial traffic. Like most Southern Californians, I love summer, but if I’m being entirely honest, fall is my favorite season. While Malibu doesn’t get much classic fall foliage and the temperatures rarely dip below 55 degrees, our little beach town still has a lot to offer this season. Don’t believe me? We put together a list of our 10 favorite things to do and places to head (page 102) this season. And for those chillier days ahead, I highly recommend you check out NakedCashmere’s new fall collection of incredibly gorgeous (and soft) sweaters and cardigan. Not only is the quality stellar, but the prices are amazingly reasonable. Last, but not least, this issue once again showcases many of Malibu’s hottest properties on the market right now. Our real estate market is booming like few other cities in the US, and we have our many incredible architects, agents, sellers, and buyers to thank for that. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we do. If you would like to continue receiving Malibu Magazine directly to your home, please don’t forget to subscribe.

Malibu Creek State Park Shooting On June 22, Irvine native Tristan Beaudette was shot and killed while sleeping in his tent at Malibu Creek State Park. Beaudette, a research scientist, was camping with his two daughters, ages 2 and 4, who were in the tent with him when he was shot. Authorities have yet to identify the suspect or determine a motive, but The Los Angeles Times reports that this is just the first of a series of shootings at the park dating back to late 2016, though police don’t suspect any connection between Beaudette’s murder and the preceding shootings. There have been multiple reports of vehicles being shot at, either on the campground or traveling nearby. The first incident reported came from a man who was shot in the arm while sleeping in a hammock. Four days before Beaudette’s death, a car driving on Malibu Canyon Road was shot, but no one was injured. According to the LA Daily News, there have also been at least nine reports of gunfire in the area since Beaudette’s death. However, investigations into these incidents have not led authorities to confirm the noises heard to be gunfire. At a community meeting, Lt. James Royal, a supervising detective at the Sheriff’s Malibu Station, cited a car backfiring and an exploding transformer as possible explanations for the noises in three of the reports. The State Park campgrounds are still closed as the LA County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate Beaudette’s murder. There is a $30,000 reward for MM anyone who can help in identifying and apprehending the shooter.

Godmother of Malibu Passes Away
Five Candidates for Malibu City Council On Tuesday, Nov. 6, Malibuties will be heading to the polls for the general election and elect new representatives for the city council. According to Deputy City Clerk Kelsey Pittijohn, a total of five residents have pulled papers at City Hall to express their intrest in running for local office. The residents include: Karen Farrer, a local activist and school advocate; Olivia Damavandi, who once served as the City of Malibu’s media information officer; Jim Palmer, a local vintner who currently serves on the city’s public works commission; Mikke Pierson, who serves on the City of Malibu’s Planning Commission; and Lance Simmens, a political activist who has worked in government positions and on the Adamson House Board. MM
Dolores “Dee” Rivellino Walsh, known as the ‘Godmother of Malibu,’ passed away on July 22 at age 83. She moved from the Bronx to Malibu where she lived for more than 50 years, and opened up a restaurant and catering business. Walsh operated The Godmother restaurant at The Malibu Racquet Club for decades and catered hundreds of events for Malibu Notables, The Malibu Times stated. Actress Ali MacGraw called Walsh’s restaurant “a favorite to food devotee because of it’s care, love, and skill,” according to KBUU. In recent years she sold the restaurant but her presence in Malibu never left. Rivellino Walsh wrote a cookbook called “The Malibu Cookbook”. She was known for saying MM “Eat like you give a damn.”
Malibu Purchases Three Commercial Lots On August 13, the City of Malibu purchased three commercial lots for a sum of $42.5 million. The lots include: the previous chili cook-off site near City Hall, the triangle property at the corner of PCH and Webb Way, and the lot in Point Dume used to sell Christmas trees. There has been no announcement from the city regarding how the land will be used. MM
Dial-a-Ride Relaunched Dial-a-Ride service returned to Malibu on August 6, with interim service provider Ventura Transit system. Riders can make reservations for transportation Monday through Wednesday from 8 am to 5:30 pm and Thursday and Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. The service also provides rides to healthcare facilities outside of Malibu, which will leave daily at 8:30 am and 10:30 am and return at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm Residents who depended on Dial-a-Ride had been left without any service when Malibu Yellow Cab went out of business on MM June 29, states The Malibu Times.
Zuma Beach Lifeguard Receives Medal of Valor The 2018 International Surf Festival will recognize eight Los Angeles County Fire Department Ocean Lifeguards for displaying extraordinary bravery in the line of duty. Ocean Lifeguard Specialist Tucker Hopkins and Ocean Lifeguard Joe Rickabaugh were awarded Medals of Valor for their acts of heroism. On June 24, 2017, Hopkins wrapped himself around delirious, incoherent swimmer during a rescue at Zuma Beach. During the rescue, Hopkins assured the swimmer would make a full-recovery. Rickabaugh was honored for a May 24, 2018, rescue of an unconscious surfer during 3-5 waves at County Line Beach.
18
Though off-duty, Rickabaugh took command of the incident and placed the surfer on a surfboard and paddled him to safety. In addition to the Medal of Valor, the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Medal were also presented. The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to retired lifeguard Captain Dan Atkins for his numerous accomplishments both on and off the sand. The Distinguished Service Medals were granted to Rescue Boat Captain Chris Lallone, Ocean Lifeguard Specialist Greg Crum, Ocean Lifeguard Ignacio Pagliaro and Captains Patrick O’Neill and Brand Chapman. Homelessness Strategic Plan Passes
Malibu Local Wins Miss Junior Teen The national title of Miss Junior Teen United States 2019 was won by young Malibu local, Rachel DeAngelis. In addition to the award DeAngelis won for her one-ofa-kind gown, which she designed herself. DeAngelis won the awards for the Best National Costume and Best Runway in the Miss Junior Teen competition held in Orlando, Florida on July 7th. Through designing her own dresses and ball gowns, she considers herself a fashion designer and an international model. She states on her website, “Being a third generation seamstress, I know how to drape, sew notions, darts, pleats, hems, button holes and croquettes.” Competing in the Junior Teen division of only 13-15 years old, much more awaits this young Malibu resident. MM
The Malibu City Council unanimously voted to pass Malibu’s Homelessness Strategic Plan at its June 25 meeting, according to the Malibu Times. The plan will improve the support of resources necessary to help the homeless. The City’s press release stated that for the first time in its history, Malibu will include a budget allocation to address homelessness for the fiscal year of 2018-2019. The budget of $200,000 will support Malibu’s Homeless Outreach Team and encampment management initiative. The plan was drafted by a team of residents, representatives from the City, the Sheriffs Department and local homeless groups, such as CART and the Malibu Homeless Outreach Team. Malibu’s homeless population has been on the decline, decreasing from 180 in 2017 to 155 in 2018, MM according to Malibu Patch.
BurgerFi Leaves Lumber Yard On June 27, BurgerFi announced on social media that its Malibu location in the Lumber Yard will be closing. In a Facebook post, the burger chain wrote: “We’d like to thank you for patronage but unfortunately we’ve closed our BurgerFi Malibu, CA location...” The restaurant first opened at the end of 2016, and made strong efforts to commit to sustainability. BurgerFi’s Green policies earned them a spot on the City of Malibu’s Clean Bay Certified List in 2017. The Malibu location was the only BurgerFi restaurant in all of California. It offered Malibu residents delicious burgers at reasonable prices. There has been no announcement regarding what will take its place MM at the Lumber Yard.
Dead Fish Found in Malibu Lagoon In recent weeks, several hundred dead fish have been found floating on the surface of the Malibu Lagoon. California State Park scientists have been investigating the events since August 23rd. Craig Sap, California State Parks Angeles District Superintendent believes that on August 22nd, abnormally high water temperatures caused the hundreds of fish to perish. “From what Jamie—the environmental scientist that was down there—said, it’s probably because it was 28 degrees Celsius,” Sap said to The Malibu Times after the initial discovery. Alternatively, some activists believe that the large die-off was due to flaws in the controversial Lagoon restoration plan that broke ground in 2012. The official cause is still undergoing investigation. MM

Celebrities such as Nina Dobrev, Dakota Johnson, January Jones and Ashley Madekwe attended the event which featured an enchanting rooftop garden designed by Nine & Eye, botanical arrangements from Jeff Leatham, live music performed by musician Jess Williamson and producer Noah Passovoy, and crystal readings from stylist-turned-Shaman Colleen McCann. Served at the event were hors d’oeuvres and specialty cocktail pairings by St-Germain Global Ambassador Camille Ralph Vidal. This was Young’s first immersive installation in which she incorporated wild juxtapositions of flavors, styles, and sensory experiences, using the beach-front home name xxxxxxxxxxx as her venue.

PEOPLE WE LOVE
SHANE SEMLER
Good for the Planet and Good for You Shane Semler, founder of Saddlerock Gardens, grew up on his family’s ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains. Semler initially started the garden to grow organic food for him and his eight siblings, but quickly expanded it into a bigger affair. The 2-acre gardens, previously an infertile pasture for horses and livestock, grow a variety of seasonal produce from leafy greens to root vegetables, peppers, tomatoes, and numerous berry plants, with plans to grow more in the future. On the property, Semler also started Malibu Wine Hikes, a popular 2 mile hike through the ranch where guests visit the garden for an hour to harvest produce to home with them. “I like to do organic farming to set an example with what we’re doing on the ranch, since we have large scale agricultural operations,” Semler says. “The gardens were kind of our experiment to see if our property could handle it.” A lot of the time, he says, people choose conventional farming methods due to finances and the need to get rid of variables which can destroy crops. Semler hopes to show people who visit the property what a large organic garden looks like up close. So far, it’s working very well on the ranch, and Semler’s creation is benefiting not just the property but also our Malibu community. MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Shane Semler for his dedication to better our the environment through organic farming.
CAROL MOSS
Making Malibu Feel Like Home A powerful force in the Malibu community, Carol Moss has made our city a better place through her strong sense of unity, justice, and serenity. Moss worked as a lawyer for much of her life, using her skills and social work experience to help launch the Community Assistance Resource Team, or CART, in 2015. The activist group brings citizens together, and aims to help Malibu’s homeless population as much as possible. From weekly dinners, to homeless connect days, CART provides numerous services to aid Malibu’s homeless population. “One very important thing that we do is we respond to needs that pop up,” Moss said. “So if somebody is going to become homeless, we find a solution.” Moss’s contributions don’t stop there. She helped start the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy, and has fought for the protection of Malibu’s beautiful environment, as she helped defend Sufrider Beach and Malibu Lagoon from commercial development in the 1970’s. As if she doesn’t do enough for the community, every Thursday night Moss also leads a meditation group out of her own home, followed by a sharing session. She welcomes anyone who would like to join. “We all need community, and there’s something really important about holding the space, for people to know that space is there for them.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Carol Moss for her strong sense of leadership, loving heart, and her unstoppable desire to make Malibu the best it can possibly be.

RICARDO YBARRA
Passing Poetry On to Our Children Providing a voice for the voiceless, Ricardo Ybarra is a pillar for his community as Malibu Poet Laureate. Ybarra started by pursuing his bachelor’s in Latin American Studies, but then went in an entirely different direction. In 1980, he moved to sunny Malibu and three years later discovered his love for poetry. In the process of getting his teaching credentials, he joined a verse writing course at California State University, Northridge and realized right off the bat it was meant to be. “It just spoke to me. I loved writing and I had an incredible teacher who I stayed close with till his passing,” Ybarra says. Later he went on to published several novels including Beyond The Reef, Scratch and The Pirates of Paradise Cove, Brotherhood of Dolphins, A Framing Job: Poems, and The Pink Rosary. Ybarra was chosen as Malibu’s first poet Laureate in March 28, 2017. Since then he has worked alongside the Laureate committee to deliver poetry to local school classrooms such as Malibu High School, libraries, and other events. When he is not writing, he actively assists in creating programs that showcase the impact and importance of words. MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Ricardo Ybarra for his love of poetry and his desire to pass it on to Malibu’s future generations.

COLIN DANGAARD
Craftsman, Writer and Horse Lover Colin Dangaard has been a Malibu resident for 40 years, and has certainly succeeded in achieving his dreams. His unique childhood in Australia helped him foster a passion for horses and writing. “I became a writer by sitting with my horses,” Dangaard said. “I wrote short stories with my portable typewriter. I pretended to be Jack London, and I pretended to be Jane Austen.” Dangaard later went on to pursue a career in writing, and became Rupert Murdoch’s first Hollywood Editor in the United States. However, his love for horses and saddle-making prompted him to shift careers, and he now heads Colin Dangaard Inc., Where he hand makes saddles on his ranch located right on Kanan Dume Road. “People know me as the guy who brought the Australian stock saddle to America,” says Dangaard. He published a novel in 2012, Talking with Horses, which merges his two passions together. But amongst all his accomplishments, he is most proud of his love for his wife, Linda, who passed away last year. For the past four years, he stayed by her bedside caring for her as she battled dementia. “I’m proud of the fact I kept the promise I made 29 years ago, holding my wife’s hand and seeing her smile.” Now, he plans on writing a book in her memory, titled Loving Linda. MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Colin Dangaard for his admirable pursuit of passion and proving that anyone can achieve their dreams through unwavering work ethic.

PEOPLE WE LOVE TED SILVERBERG
Capturing More Than Just Nice Photos Photographer and surfer Ted Silverberg has always been drawn to what makes people unique. He began taking photos in junior high, and since then his love of photography has only grown. The Malibu photographer looks to photograph his subjects with a unique, new perspective. Instead of standard headshots, Silverberg focuses on who the individual is, trying to capture their true essence. “Instead of taking photos of people, I was trying to take photos inside of people,” Silverberg says. “If I’m taking a photo of you, I’d want to know more about you and I’d want to capture something that’s unique about you.” A big part of his photography is forming a personal connection with his subjects so he can take photos that expose a deeper part of who they are. When he takes a portrait of someone, he doesn’t want them to say “that’s the best photo of me ever taken,” he wants them to say “that’s the most artistic way I’ve ever looked at myself” or “I can see my own personal strengths in that photo.” Silverberg moved to Malibu in 1980, but says he has basically been living here his entire life. He believes our community is always evolving, and he sees it as the perfect place to raise his two daughters. When he posts his shots of Malibu, he often gets comments such as “I don’t live here anymore, but thank you for keeping me connected to Malibu. Your shots really bring it back to my heart.” To aspiring photographers, Silverberg says, “Photography is an art. Make it your own in some way, put your own feelings in it. Your goal is to continuously find new and different ways to inspire others and continue your uniqueness with your own art style.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Ted Silverberg for for his ability to connect with people through photography and his art.
TRINITY ROSE
Malibu’s Next Big Star Fifteen-year-old singer-songwriter Trinity Rose was only thirteen when she became the youngest contestant to be featured on NBC’s The Voice. Trinity has been singing since she was a child, born into a family which always valued music and performance. Her family recognized her talent when she began singing The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” on a whim at a piano recital. Her inspiration comes from growing up in a home filled with music enthusiasts where her early favorites were Nirvana and The Beatles, and Trinity considers her own music genre “indie-pop.” Her favorite part of performing is connecting to people in the audience emotionally and being able to make people feel certain ways through her music, which she believes is her job as a singer. While Trinity hasn’t always lived here, she feels that Malibu is her home. “I left for a year to go to New York and the entire time I was begging to go back to Malibu. It’s always been my home. I feel like I never want to leave.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Trinity Rose for her passion and dedication to music and songwriting

PEOPLE WE LOVE MARLA MARTENSON
Matchmaking and the Mystical Marla Martenson began her career as a mystical matchmaker after moving to Los Angeles from Chicago, feeling lost and looking for a new path. She began working at a video dating company where she was first introduced to matchmaking. After later leaving her job as a Beverly Hills “millionaire matchmaker” in 2009, she started her own mystical matchmaking business. “I’ve always had a big spiritual component to my life,” Martenson says. Her matchmaking process begins when she first meets a client, either in person or over video chat, and understands what they are looking for in a partner. Her service is very personal, and clients can call her at any hour to ask her for advice or share about the dates or relationships she has helped them with. She helps people across the country, with many of her clients here in Malibu where she can meet with them personally. In addition to matchmaking, Martenson has written three memoirs: Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker, Hearts On The Line, and The Buddha Made Me Do It. “It’s helping people find love,” Martenson says. “When someone has lost their husband or wife, they just wish they could find that new special someone, and I find it for them.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Marla Martenson for her commitment to bringing people together.
BERNARD AND SOPHIE BENITA
Sweet Dreams at Le Café De La Plage Le Café de la Plage has made a name for itself since opening last year, providing delicious desserts, coffee, and tea along with excellent service to anyone that comes in. The café was founded by Bernard and Sophie Benita, who lived in France before moving to Malibu in 2017. Married for 23 years, the couple coincidentally met while eating ice cream. Sophie, who was a pastry chef, had a dream for them to move to California and open their own ice cream café. It didn’t take long for them to realize this dream as Le Café de la Plage opened just a quick four months after they arrived in Malibu. Part of their success has stemmed from their insistence on getting their ingredients from local, organic vendors such as Rainbow Acres, ensuring delicious, high-quality desserts. “We share the same view about the quality of the products,” Bernard said. “That’s why we chose to work with [organic vendors].” The café offers a wide variety of handmade ice cream, along with vegan-flavored selections. Since moving here, Bernard and Sophie have made Malibu their home and what they love most about the community is how friendly and welcoming their customers are. MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Bernard and Sophie for chasing their dream and bringing their kindness and delicious, world-class ice cream to Malibu.

DOUG BURDGE
THE MALIBU LOOK Since opening near the Pier in 1993, Burdge & Associates Architects has become one of LA’s most prestigious firms and a Malibu institution. We sat down with visionary designer and Malibu local Doug Burdge for an inside look at his substantial local legacy. ✎ written by Holly Bieler photographed by Julie Wuellner

ou might not know Doug Burdge’s name, but if you’ve lived in Malibu for any amount of time, you know his work intimately. Burdge’s PCH firm, Burdge & Associates Architects, is one of Los Angeles’ preeminent firms and something of a local institution, responsible for some of Malibu’s most spectacular homes with over 250 projects in the community since it opened in 1993. Quick-to-laugh and
disarmingly warm, Burdge exudes an authentic Malibu “laid backness,“ without any of the pretension that can sometimes accompany it. Upon meeting Doug, you’ll find him distinctly un-braggy, with a dry, self-effacing sense of humor, that peppers verbose, articulating sentences about the evolution of design with stray “like”s. Born and raised in the San Fernando valley suburbs, Burdge has lived in Malibu since 1993, when as a USC graduate he and his wife, Laura,
moved their young family to a home they built after the 1993 wildfire in the La Costa foothills and soonafter, Doug opened up shop in a small office right across from the Malibu Pier. Much has changed in that time— Doug’s sons, Reed and Hayden, are adults with artistic talents in their own right, in fields of graphic design, painting and woodworking, with Doug and Laura now living at a beautiful remodeled home at the beach. Burdge’s firm, is located on PCH in midtown Malibu. It is there that

Burdge & Associates heads up some of the city’s most sought-after projects, spanning from multimillion dollar homes throughout California, Montana, Texas and Idaho, to the ultra-luxe hotel group Auberge’s latest resort in Palm Springs. And what happened of that of that tiny first office near the Pier? Doug is currently at work designing another small boutique motel right near by. “It’s kind of full circle,” Burdge said. If his life and business have ch-

anged considerably since he first moved to Malibu almost three decades ago, so too has Malibu itself, and in no small part thanks to Doug Burdge. From contemporary Carbon Beach estates to spectacular properties in Serra Retreat and Pt. Dume, Burdge has been responsible for some of the most beautiful projects built in Malibu over the last twenty five years. Burdge is considered a renowned architect not just in Malibu but across the US and abroad. Doug Burdge is
who comes to mind to call first when you want design a luxury home or exquisite commercial or “a social gathering“ restaurant or property. Or, for that matter, the most spectacular home ever. Which he did... On the day of this interview, we found ourselves at one of these homes. It was a balmy Monday afternoon, as we trailed a new property with the building team at a magnificent, Burdge-designed estate. This 11,000 square foot contemporary

home, perched on a spectacular vista just above Carbon “Billionaire“ Beach, is jaw-dropping even by Malibu standards. It’s spectacularly outfitted in luxurious woods and hardware, with an expansive living area and bedrooms, each boasting stunning views of the Pacific. Downstairs you’ll find an over-the-top entertainment space, with a massive stone bar, skylit soaking tub room, steam and dry saunas and yes, there’s a dedicated RELAX room with a state-of-the-art

If you might think it’s never someplace you’d actually want to live in, I have some encouraging news for you: you 100% will want to live here. I still don’t fully understand how a design-forward, modern, 11,000 square foot estate with the nicest amenties I’ve ever seen can feel so warm, airy and utterly liveable. This is all a part
of Doug Burdge’s trademark. Doug is known for not only his passion in his work, but for his love of the city of Malibu. His diverse range, for which he’s demonstrated exceptional design expertise, is warm and inviting. You are at home the moment you walk through any one of his projects. Every inch makes sense, even if you can’t quite put your finger on how it does. Indeed ask anyone that has worked with Burdge, and invariably

informal in our design, and he really captures and creates that environment that is the Malibu lifestyle.” Add this one to the list of Burdge trademarks as well: an ability to design homes perfectly tailored for Malibu. This is usually the second thing people say about Burdge’s work, after talk of his layouts have been exhausted: his innate ability for capturing the Malibu way of life in a home. David Charvet, who has worked on various projects with Burdge through
his company, The Jones Builders Group, and commissioned his firm to design his French chateau-inspired Serra Retreat home in 2008. Burdge displays a canny grasp of the community, and the influence design can wield in it. “He’s been in this town for such a long time,“ Charvet said, “and he has the pulse of what is needed.“ It’s this reputation that landed Burdge one of his first commercial commissions; the redesign of the Trancas Country Market in 2007. As
a former Malibu West resident, and local architect, Burdge had long imagined that the tired center, at the time little more than a pedestrian stripmall, could in the right hands turn into a true community hub for his corner of Malibu. He thought it was just going to be an easy project, how could the local residents not welcome this with open arms? Immediately the project garnered local resistance. Locals feared a renovated center would bring more

TRANCAS COUNTRY MARKET Below, Burdge’s sketch ahead of his renovations of the Trancas Country Market. Above, the finished product. If the Country Market project sustained some community pushback in the beginning, as soon as it opened it was garnering glowing reviews from locals. “It very much fit the vibe and desires of western Malibu,” said Malibu City Council member Laura Rosenthal. The center has become a social hub for western Malibu, with movie screenings and concerts on the central lawn.

tourists to their comparatively sleepy corner of Malibu and threaten the more homey, country look for which it had long been known. The slogan “Don’t Cross Creek Trancas” slowly seeped into Malibu vernacular. As property prices have climbed, retail tenants have come and gone. A handful of new structures have added to Malibu’s shallow skyline over the past decade, but much of Malibu’s existing public space looks a lot like it did twenty years ago. If you ob-
serve this city solely by its commercial centers, Point Dume Plaza with its terra cotta roofs and trademark dark-brown detailing, or Malibu Colony Plaza with with multi-colored flavors, it begins to look a lot less like a town where any whisper of construction or redevelopment incites community-wide anxiety. “Everyone was saying [this is] going to be so terrible,” Burdge said. “[People] thought it was going to be like Beverly Hills or something. And I’m
going, ‘No no no. This is going to be unbelievable.’ Despite community qualms Burdge continued with the project, culling from his wealth of knowledge about the community to develop a space that fit western Malibu‘s more country aesthetic and sensibilities. “It wouldn’t be mostly stucco like the Valley” Burdge said. “[Trancas] always felt like it was more rural Malibu. [There was a sense of], this area is more the country, and we should

let the country stay the country.” The style can be best described as “ Napa meets the Sea.“ When it finally opened in 2014, replete with rustic barnwood buildings, natural zinc roofing, and sandstone detailing, local reviews were almost universal: the new Trancas Country Market was a huge success! The design fit perfectly with the Western Malibu rural aesthetic, and any fears Trancas would end up looking like Cross Creek were squashed upon the unveiling of the central meeting space, not with swingsets, but an open patch of grass, where locals now stage summer concerts and movie screenings. Malibu City Council member Laura Rosenthal, who has known Doug since their sons were in Little League together years ago, said community

reaction shifted overnight. “People were afraid the feel of it would be more for tourists,” she said. “But the design elements made it something that was more appropriate for western Malibu. The use of old barn wood, the low-slung, one-story buildings. It very much fit the vibe and desires of western Malibu.” “It’s very ironic to me that I see people that were all up in arms, pushing theories that it was going to become a little Walmart center, show up for Friday night concerts on the lawn [now],” she added. “I’m glad they’ve come to see that the sky didn’t fall, and that the center really is a hub for the community.” And if Burdge was caught off-guard by the initial community uproar, he was less surprised by their reaction upon its completion. “They came up
to me when it first opened, and they thanked me,” he said. “People would say, ‘I’m so sorry.’ I said, ‘Listen, I’m not some [out-of-town] architect from the Mid-West. I wasn’t going to give you a not so attractive retail building out of the Valley.” Indeed if Malibu-ites have long been historically averse to commercial construction and redevelopment of any kind, Burdge says his twenty five years in Malibu have informed a distinctly different understanding of the city, and of its potential. The redevelopment of Malibu’s commercial and public spaces aren’t inherently a threat to the Malibu way of life he says; in fact, if you do them right, with people who know and love the city, he thinks they can make it even better. “Locals are staying here, you‘re getting a lot of great, new people, and the

people who have been around, they don‘t want to move anywhere,” Burdge said. “So, you‘re taking a place that we have, and you‘re looking at thinking, how can we make that better? Burdge continued, “Here’s a novel idea, we need to create some intimate music venues in Malibu. So, how about we make the vacant 2nd floor restaurant space at the Lumber Yard, into a hip and happening jazz club? Who wants to go to bed at 9 p.m. on Saturdays? It’s about trying to create new things that allow people to take the spaces we have and make them stronger.” From Trancas to the Surfrider, Burdge’s commercial projects in Malibu have accomplished just that, serving as blueprints along the way for how to elevate and modernize Malibu without threatening it’s way of life. Following his work on Trancas,
Burdge was commisioned to head renovations on a Point Dume Bates Motel-like motel that would eventually become the Native, a chic jewelbox of a boutique motel. Soon thereafter he began working with the insanely creative ownership team on the Surfrider, which is also the Surfrider Inn, a dilapidated 50s-era motel just across from First Point break, widely beloved for its dated design. “That process of modernizing a building that’s been so iconic in Malibu, you didn’t want to disappoint people who had known it for so many years,“ said Charvet, whose company, Jones Builders Group, served as the builder during renovations. “It was tricky.” However when it opened in 2017 the hotel was an immediate success. Hipper, perhaps, than what had been
there before, with the addition of the amazing roof deck but so distinctly Malibu and so beautifully done it ellicted nary a community grump. Rather, locals began increasingly booking up rooms for themselves on anniversaries or for visiting family members. So add this too to the list of Burdge design trademarks: the ability to convince even Malibuites that change can be good. “I live here, my kids went to school here, and we’re not going anywhere,” Burdge said. “And I want to make changes here for the better. It’s an insanely, wonderful place to live, work and play and there’s still a MM lot of good work to be done.” Burdge & Associates Architects 24911 Pacific Coast Highway buaia.com 310-456-5905

hile Pacific Patio Furniture only opened its Agora Hills location 5 years ago, they have already become a leader in the outdoor furniture and accessories market, drawing rave reviews from customers for their range and quality of product and their sterling customer service. Owner Ruth Adler said that customers used to shopping online for their outdoor furniture are often especially pleased when they make a trip to the Pacific Patio Furniture showroom. Online images can often hide poor craftsmanship and quality, Adler said, as well as subtle but significant color and make variations between products, and many online stores offer only restrictive customization options. As a result, shoppers buying outdoor furniture online often receive products far different than what they were envisioning. However at Pacific Patio Furniture,
64
customers are able to see and feel each piece firsthand, ensuring their outdoor space turns out exactly as they had expected. And when it comes to customer service, online stores can’t compete with the breadth of services and dedication Pacific Patio offers, from design help to direct delivery and assembly. “If our customers need help in setting up their backyard with patio furniture, we will be happy to visit their home and give advice,” Adler said. “You can’t get that online.” Seeing and feeling types of fabric is also extremely important when shopping for furniture. “Many items online are sold without cushions or pillows made from fabric like Sunbrella®, the best fabric available for outdoor use,” Adler said. “Whereas almost all of our furniture is covered in high quality Sunbrella® fabric.” It is this dedication to quality and to customer satisfaction that has established Pacific Patios’ reputation. “We’re here for our MM customers,” Adler said.
CUSTOMER SATISFACTION The benefits to shopping for outdoor furniture in-store versus online are vast, said Pacific Patio’s Ruth Adler. Pacific Patio customers are able to see firsthand the quality and style they are investing in, for one, something you can’t do online.

INNER GARDENS
COLLECTOR’S WORLD Malibu Magazine caught up with Stephen Block, owner of Inner Gardens and collector of antique garden pieces for a look inside his world.

nteriors. Gardens. Antiques. Age and patina ground a design, whether indoors or out. A sophisticated interior designer understands this and follows the trends established by Inner Gardens with every new shipment of antiques and objects from around the world. Patina is the rich, worn layer that develops naturally, over a long period of time, on the surface of materials like stone, metal, wood, and leather. This patina is the unique result of an aging process that involves a combination of time, weather, and handling. If an object was knocked over

and dinged in 1891, the owner likely wasn’t too happy about it at the time. But add a hundred years or so, and that ding gets filled with lichen and moss, adding character and charm that can’t be duplicated. While patina is mainly used as a physical descriptor, I think of it as a feeling. Being in an indoor or outdoor space with old objects creates a feeling of comfort and warmth that is difficult to otherwise create. The team at Inner Gardens collaborates with interior designers to incorporate our extensive collection of interior and garden furnishings, planters, trees, plants, and unique arrangements into your home or garden. With congestion on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) seemingly getting worse from year to year, it is vital to take a look at not only the causes for traffic but also various proposed, possible and theoretical solutions to the problem. Malibu Magazine investigates these in a series called “The PCH Report“.

The Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu is often troubled by terrible traffic congestion, causing driver consternation in the best of times and collision-related catastrophes in the worst. In June there were 8 injury collisions and 23 non-injury collisions, and in July there were 22 injury collisions and 31 non-injury collisions, according to Detective David Huelsen of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. When PCH shuts down due to a collision, drivers are relegated to only two arteries – California State Routes 23 and 27. The resulting gridlocks are of nightmare proportions. “Malibu is a community of approximately 13,000 people that, by even a conservative estimate, receives 13 million visitors each year,” Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner, Malibu City Councilmember, told Malibu Magazine. “Over the years, many ideas have been discussed and studied regarding how to address and ameliorate the incredible traffic congestion on PCH, especially during peak tourist times. However, facilitating some proposed solutions is often too encumbering, either fiscally or geographically, or both.” Many Malibuites worry PCH congestion could cause serious negative consequences for the
City, as well as for commercial and residential property owners. “Living in Malibu is like being on a big vacation every day and Malibu is as beautiful as it was when we moved here in 1973,” said Nick Rodionoff, a Malibu photographer. “However, both the developers and the City better realize that, if you don’t have an enjoyable destination, we’re in for real trouble because it could ultimately mean there will be a decline in real property values.” Wagner agrees. “Density diminishes desire,” he said. “We are over-saturated with visitors and we have to address PCH concerns as soon as possible. If people are extremely frustrated, they’ll stop coming to Malibu – they’ll Tweet or use other social media to let their friends know how ugly and intolerable PCH traffic is and, if that occurs, businesses could fail and housing values could diminish.” As with any large problems, crafting possible solutions is complicated. Various government agencies with jurisdiction over PCH, lawmakers and Malibu city council persons must collaborate to design and implement panoramic solutions. As collisions and fatalities abound on PCH, changes must be made rapidly.

Possible Solutions for Improving the PCH Nightmare
94
More Law Enforcement
Bike Lanes
All drivers know that when they observe law enforcement in an area, they are especially attentive to the need to comply with laws and traffic signage. This extra attentiveness can help decrease accidents and create a safer driving environment for everyone on the road. Further, having officers at the ready allows for faster response times in the case of an accident and more officers who can assist in traffic congestion management. “The City of Malibu would have to fund hiring more officers,” Detective David Huelsen of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said. “More law enforcement is always helpful,” he added. However, having more officers on site is not an all-around panacea and, over the years, many solutions for how to create a safer, less congested PCH in Malibu have been considered. Some proposed solutions have been outright rejected as entirely impossible, mainly because of Malibu’s position between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains, however, others might be more in the realm of the possible. Often years-long construction to implement these projects would be too onerous or prohibitively expensive for residents and property owners who would strongly oppose them.
“Regarding bike lanes, we are continuously working with the City of Malibu to improve pedestrian and bicycle access on PCH,” Abdolhossein Saghafi, Cal Trans Supervising Traffic Engineer said. The project to stripe bike lanes and make them more user-friendly from Zuma Beach to Trancas Canyon has just been completed. Much more complicated is how to improve bike access along the east end of Malibu, where the road is more narrow. It’s not that it’s never going to happen. Rather, it’s a constant challenge due to rights of way acquisition issues and the simple fact that there is not that much real estate to work with. “If we improve bike lanes in the eastern part of Malibu, they will take away approximately six feet and that means the turn lanes would be compromised,” Wagner noted.

THE PCH REPORT
Elevated Crosswalks Why not build an elevated cross walk - sometimes called a pedestrian bridge? After all, one doesn’t have to look far for an example of such a bridge working well. “There are no current plans to construct elevated pedestrian overcrossings at this time because the projects are complex and costly and, moreover, such projects would severely disrupt traffic flow along PCH during construction,” Eric Menjivar, Caltrans Public Information Officer said. “Before any over-crossings could ever be constructed, first, authorities would have to address the practical problem that currently, there are insufficient rights of way for such projects and obtaining such rights involves legal proceedings involving easement acquisition and, sometimes, the eminent domain process.”
MALIBU CITY COUNCILMEMBERS

Laura Rosenthal City Councilmember, Laura Rosenthal spoke to Malibu Magazine about the reality of establishing a ferry system between the cities of Malibu and Santa Monica as well as the possibility for creating a shuttle system in Malibu.
Jefferson Wagner City Councilmember, Malibu Pier Concessionaire, and owner of Zuma Jay’s surf shop, Jefferson Wagner shared his insight with Malibu Magazine on various possible solutions from a double decker PCH to limiting commercial traffic.
Widen PCH
Change the Speed Limit
“You cannot widen PCH – it is what it is,” said Leland Tang, Public Information officer for California Highway Patrol – West Valley. “The last time that option was discussed was three to five years ago... It is entirely untenable – prohibitively expensive – and it was dismissed,” Councilmember Wagner said, noting that landowners would fight any effort.
Perhaps the officials could lower the speed limit? A lower speed limit, at least through the stretches of PCH that go directly through town, could result in fewer accidents and less traffic and congestion on PCH. Doing so would not be easy because of applicable regulations. However, this solution would not be impossible. “Whether to lower a speed limit on a state highway is a highly complicated process and is dependent upon engineering studies,” Huelsen said. “They compute the average speed of a given sample of drivers and determine other factors to determine the correct speed limit.” This solution is a possibility. Citizens who advocate such action may want to get involved and contact their local and state representatives. One thing to explore – if the speed limit were to be lowered – how would that affect the synchronization project? That is an issue, Wagner notes, that would necessitate careful assessment.

More Solutions Educate Visitors About PCH Perils Harkening back to relevant statistics, Malibu has 13,000 residents and 13 million visitors per year. For each resident, there are at least a hundred visitors annually, many who only envision beautiful Malibu, not the complications of driving on PCH. The PCH Task Force is a consortium begun in 2013 that is co-chaired by State Senators Henry Stern and Ben Allen (D-Redondo Beach) at the State level, and Assembly member Richard Bloom, as well as area residents, bicyclist advocates, pedestrians, and local public officials, including Caltrans representatives, and representatives from Los Angeles, Malibu and Santa Monica. The Task Force received a $150,000 corridor grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to fund pedestrian and bicycle safety assessments and educational outreach, according to Pat Hines, Executive Director of Safe Moves Company, a non-profit organization that coordinates grant-funded efforts. “This is a public outreach project coordinated with the California Office of Safety that is geared toward making PCH safer and it is aimed at letting every driver know that an action that takes just one second, such as taking a selfie or texting when driving along PCH, can change the driver’s life and possibly the lives of others forever,” Hines said. The grant is funding Public Service Announcements aimed at viewers’ emotions. “These are powerful PSAs,” Hines said. “Senator Stern, who grew up in Malibu, had a childhood friend who died on the PCH – he’s knows full well the tragic consequences.” The PSAs will air on gas station televisions to try to educate motorists whom are not familiar with the perils drivers face on the PCH. The grant will also fund an interactive brochure and informational events at schools and farmers’ markets, Hines said.
96
Limiting Commercial Traffic Why not limit the times during which commercial drivers can make deliveries to area businesses? “PCH is a state highway and we cannot restrict traffic access on state highways,” Tang said. “The goal is to manage traffic better, not restrict it. One thing to consider is to restrict commercial traffic and its delivery of goods and such to evening hours when traffic is lighter.” Wagner agrees, but notes that it is necessary to transport commodities and for delivery services such as UPS and FedEx to have access to Malibu businesses and residents. Government being the art of compromise, perhaps there is a space for a compromise here.
Uber/Lyft
Provide Motorists with More Information
Wagner, whose surf shop – as well as the pier he operates – abuts the PCH, notes that when Uber and Lyft are used, sometimes they have more than one passenger. So instead of three people driving individual cars, Uber/Lyft provide transport. Further, drivers drop off and pick up passengers so no car must be parked. Although Uber/Lyft drivers sometimes must pull to the side to assess where their next fare is coming from, at least traffic is somewhat lessened by their presence. That’s before taking into account the reality that a passenger in an Uber/Lyft may be inebriated or high. When using Uber/Lyft, intoxicated people do not need to get behind the wheel, limiting the risk of accidents.
One of the biggest number of complaints law enforcement receives is that there is not enough real-time information provided to motorists, according to Tang. Changeable Message Signage can help inform motorists of current traffic conditions and what lies ahead, according to Tang. “There are a total of nine such signs and the City of Malibu coordinates with CHP which monitors all nine signs, although four belong to the City of Malibu, four are owned by Los Angeles County and one is owned by CHP.” Such signage can be seen throughout Malibu, such as where one is driving north on PCH approaching Heathercliff and a sign informs motorists to use the right lane to access Zuma Beach. Another two signs seen as one drives further north approaching El Matador inform drivers that pedestrians are crossing from the highway to walk to the beaches. Longtime Malibuite Nick Rodionoff agrees and advocates using more signs to inform drivers about traffic conditions. “Perhaps they could inform people at key arteries such as Malibu Canyon and Kanan Road that parking is full and it may take literally three hours to travel five miles,” he said.

Daily Insanity on PCH Unfortunately, images like these are becoming more commonplace on PCH. However, many visitors remain unaware of how dangerous PCH can be. The PCH Task Force hopes that future PSAs will help inform not only residents, but also tourists.

Theoretical Solutions Shuttles and Trolleys to Ferry Beach Goers and Shoppers in Key Areas Wagner advocates using City property to install pavers and construct parking lots and then employ shuttles to key beaches during peak seasons. “The City just acquired Trancas Fields and that would be a perfect place to put such a parking lot and use it as a terminus at the west end,” he said. “The parking lot could not only ameliorate traffic to and between beaches, it could serve as a great staging area for local fire and police in emergencies such as wildfires.” Huelsen agreed. “That’s a very good idea,” he said. Wagner also notes that the City of Malibu owns the Christmas Tree lot at the terminus of Point Dume which could also be made into a parking area where shuttles could go to Point Dume during peak tourist season. Malibuite Carrie Rodionoff agreed. “Years ago, when we had slide, busses circled and cars were parked and there was a shuttle,” she said. “There were trolleys all over Malibu to get people transported. Using shuttles would cut down on congestion as long as motorists had a place to park.” Michael Koss, President of Koss Real Estate and manager of the Malibu Country Mart, said his company funded a shuttle from Pepperdine, to Ralph’s, to the Malibu Bluffs, and to the Country Mart a
98
few years ago. “For such a shuttle to succeed, the City would have to help private businesses and help in developing ridership,” Koss said. “We’d be very amenable to a public-private partnership.” Wagner heartily advocates such an idea, noting that a downtown Malibu shuttle could ameliorate traffic congestion, especially if its route extended to Surfrider, Malibu Pier and PC Greens. “The City owns eleven acres next to the Standard Station and it is perfect for a parking lot to facilitate a shuttle,” Wagner said. Other officials heartily agree with that. “My goal is to get a stand-alone parking lot in the Civic Center so that we can get shuttles to move people around and help reduce the current traffic nightmare,” Councilmember Laura Rosenthal said. “Nothing has been decided, but we are definitely looking at the piece of land at the corner of Webb Way and PCH that the City is buying and that has been used recently as the site for the building equipment for the Wastewater Plant.” In order to accomplish that, City regulations would have to be changed as they currently do not allow for standalone parking lots in commercial zones. This idea has support – it may come to fruition.
Prevent Vehicular Traffic in Congested Areas
Create Two Levels On PCH
In many cities throughout the world, there are areas where streets are cordoned off and only pedestrian traffic is permissible, cutting down on traffic as well as making the area safer for tourists and shoppers. Why not consider this as a solution in key shopping areas, such as the surrounding area of the Country Mart, Malibu Village, Lumber Yard and the new developments, where there is terrible congestion? “Given the configuration of our current streets and shopping areas, it would be difficult to close down streets for pedestrian use only,” Rosenthal said. “We have talked about it but it is a difficult proposition currently.” This proposal does not fall into the “It’s not going to happen category.” Rather, regulations may have to be changed and configuration altered, but perhaps this solution merits more study.
Over the years, there have been suggestions about constructing a double-level PCH, with one level going north and west and the other south and east, Wagner said. Today, the idea has no legs at all. “Building a two-level PCH would never happen,” Huelsen said. First, the same landowners who would object to having rights of way established to compromise – or take over – their driveways or land – in order to widen PCH would also vehemently object to such processes which would be necessary to build a two-level highway. Second, even if the project were somehow approved, and its truly astronomical cost were somehow funded, construction of the project would paralyze the roadway for years, Huelsen noted. Third, Wagner said, “We need to think ahead – it makes no sense to build a two-level highway when we know that the sea level is almost certainly going to rise. At worst, in a few decades, the lower level – what is PCH now – would be submerged.” This simply isn’t going to happen.

THE PCH REPORT
If Not by Land or Sea - What About by Air?
Establish a Ferry Between Malibu and the Santa Monica Pier Back in the day when Alice’s Restaurant was at the end of the Malibu Pier, its owner Bob Yuro, fellow restaurateur Bob Morris, who still operates Paradise Cove Restaurant, and Harry Gesner, a long time Malibu developer, floated the idea of establishing a pier to ferry to transport visitors from Santa Monica to Malibu. Ultimately, the idea lost support. Historically, a ferry was first used by the Rindge family and then again in the 1970s when Malibu was paralyzed by a mudslide that completely blocked PCH. The disaster damage repaired, the ferry was discontinued. One wonders, why not consider establishing a pier-to-pier ferry between the Santa Monica Pier and the Malibu Pier today? Unfortunately, there are several impediments to establishing one now. “To implement a ferry system, Cal Trans would provide a permit to work along its right of way after the Coastal Commission gave its decision concerning whether such a service was to exist,” Menjivar said. Wagner notes that the State Land Commission owns the land the pier sits on, leases it to State Parks, and Malibu Pier Partners, owned by Wagner and another partner, operate as Master Concessionaire for the Pier. Further, Surfrider, the Pier and the Malibu Lagoon have just been designated as National Historic sites. Talk about red tape! When so many government agencies are involved, getting permission to do anything – let alone change a historical landmark – is a multi-year process. Wagner also notes that the Malibu Pier is not configured for landing a large water craft. “A pier to pier ferry is not as viable as one thinks because the entire pier would have to be rebuilt or we would have to have ferries dock way off the pier, unload passengers onto smaller craft, and have them then dock,” Wagner said. “If we did everything we would have to do... a ferry ticket would be at least $100 and no one would want to pay that.” Finally, Councilmember Rosenthal notes that, as always, parking is a central concern. Even if a ferry were installed – or a hydrofoil employed – there were be a practical problem – where would all the passengers park? It simply isn’t going to happen.
Rooftop commuting occurs in some areas throughout the world. Indeed, in May, Uber unveiled an electric air taxi prototype, named UberAIR. The company has announced Dallas and LA as two of the ‘launch cities’ it will partner with in order to bring UberAIR to the market. It is still searching for the third city and hope to begin commercial operations in 2023. That’s innovative. That’s very cool. However, one very practical reality nixes this as an option in Malibu – there are no airports or public rooftops to utilize. It simply isn’t going to happen.
Our Conclusion Overall, what Malibuites want most is to keep precious Malibu’s unique character and to ensure that there are necessary services to keep Malibu a vibrant, thriving community that provides locals with a quality standard of living. Similar to most problems of this scale, it is imperative that lawmakers, city councilmembers and residents work together to understand and address the various problems that arise on PCH. In future years, it will be essential for all parties involved to collaborate and implement panoramic solutions to combat PCH’s increasing number of accidents and worsening congestion.

How Can Traffic On PCH
BO BARRAGAN
BILL MISENER

“A carpool lane would cause more traffic and you’d have to expand [PCH], so probably flashing stop signs for pedestrians would be best [to help congestion on PCH].”
“I think I’d have to have superpowers to fix it, but short of that, my suggestion is to have bridges at strategic points for crossing to get to the beach. I think they need bridges along the PCH in varying spots.”
“The traffic problem is the result of overbuilding. Tearing down a single resident home and building a multiunit apartment strucutre and there are more people here than ever. That’s what causes the traffic congestion.”
PHIL GOTTSTEIN
KIM KLEIN
TERRY FOX
“I would say it would be too difficult to widen lanes. Maybe at certain hours they have more lanes open, versus two and two. Maybe like in Kauai where they have the bridge and let 30 cars go.”
“I would definitely time the signals to actually move people along the road, and I would put in more accurate turn lanes and give the parking zones more buffer room.”
“I live up in Point Dume, and for 15 years I had an office in Santa Monica, I noticed that it had progressively gotten worse and worse. So my solution: I changed offices. So that’s what everybody should do.”

“One thing they could work on is the timing of the lights, because I don’t think they are timed properly with one another, so each one changes sporadically and it backs up traffic for miles.”
“It’s manageable during the week, but the weekend is bad. If you carpool, you would cut the traffic in half. Unless you’re a local then carpool only, just on weekends. And people will get to know each other if they carpool.”
“Being a cyclist, I’d love to have a bicycle lane on both sides if that were possible. And you have people double parking who don’t want to pay to go into the parking lot. But they park right where the bicycles should ride.”

“PCH traffic is hell. I complain about it everyday. The summer here is hell because of PCH. I lived here for 32 years and it gets worse every year.”
“I think you’d have to carve another canyon from the 101 to PCH. But that’s a huge endeavor. What about a ferry system? Maybe just before Oxnard. Maybe Point Dume to Venice.”

FALL GUIDE
10 FALL GUIDE
THINGS TO DO THIS FALL From apple-picking, to wine tasting, pumpkin patches and halloween scares, we put together the perfect bucket list for you this season. ✎ written by Isabel Sami and Lauren Label
A
s summer transitions into fall and L.A. temperatures begin their notable if tepid annual drop, the new season brings with it a slurry of fun new activities. While Malibu is often portrayed as a year-round summer oasis, there are many ways that locals can enjoy what autumn has to offer in Southern California. Witnessing the changing leaves or touring a corn maze might take a bit more work
and planning, but don’t be discouraged– there are a ton more ways to embrace and enjoy the season than you may realize. From pumpkin patches to Halloween festivities to delicious new pumpkin spice treats, Malibu and its surrounding areas are brimming with fall-inspired fun if you know where to look. This time of year also marks the end of summer vacation, when life to get busy again as kids to go back to school, so escaping on a weekend getaway or a short camping trip in the mountains is the perfect way
to get a taste of classic fall scenery. While summer is a time for recuperating and relaxing for many people, fall is seen as a time for life to get busy again, but this doesn’t mean that the fun has to end. Taking the kids to a pumpkin patch or a sports game on Friday night is a perfect way to have quality family time without spending a lot of money or traveling very far. Going out with friends to an apple orchard, a nice café or wine tasting are more activities which you can do to enjoy the cozy pleasures of fall with others.

Yosemite National Park 9035 Village Dr, Yosemite Valley (209) 372-0200
If you’re looking for a trip to take this fall, drive out to Yosemite to see some excep-
tional fall foliage. Hiking during this time is ideal as the weather has had a chance to cool off a little without getting too chilly, and the sights are simply stunning. Seeing Half Dome and El Capitan looming over miles of copper and red leaves will be a welcome sight after an endless summer in Malibu, and the drive up to the Sierra Nevada Mountains displays countryside that we often forget exists in California. Taking a trip away from the coast is a good way to experience more of what this state has to offer. Get a lodge for the weekend or camp in the woods, and enjoy the beauty of autumn.

Fall 2018 will bring family-favorite activities such as the Spooky Spider Bounce House, Mr. Bones Straw Maze, Captain Billy Bones Jump & Fly, life-size pumpkin houses in the Pumpkin Village, Mr. Bones Super Slide, as well as pumpkins in all shapes and sizes, pony rides, and more.

LAUREN LOBLEY
APPLE CHERRY PECAN CRISP I’m a traditionally trained pastry chef, but when I got out of culinary school, I didn’t feel good about what all that dairy and gluten was doing to my system. So I began experimenting with vegan and gluten-free baking. A lifelong sugar and carb addict (my childhood can be summed up in five words: cheese pizza and chocolate cake), I was very happy to find that I could create some really delicious - even healthy recipes without the usual suspects I was used to baking with (eggs, refined sugar, dairy and gluten). This recipe falls among the healthiest I have created, which is a trick to the mind because it certainly doesn’t taste like it is. Enjoy this as a traditional crisp with a side of your favorite vegan vanilla or caramel ice cream (Coconut Bliss is my go to when I don’t feel like making my own), or switch things up by using this as a topping for breakfast: put it on top of your favorite vegan yogurt, oatmeal, or even quinoa! Welcome to fall!

STEP 2 Place all the ingredients for the crisp into the same bowl (no need to create extra work!) Use a fork to mix until thoroughly combined. Sprinkle the crisp over the apples as evenly as possible. It won’t cover the apples completely.
STEP 3 Place baking dish on a sheet pan to avoid burning the bottom before the apples are cooked. Bake for about 1 hour on the middle rack or until the apples are firm and the crisp is browned. If you find the crisp is browning before the apples bake, you can place a piece of foil over top of the baking dish to seal in the moisture and protect the crisp halfway through baking. Serve warm or cold.

LILY’S MALIBU
MALIBU’S LEGENDARY BURRITO Lily Castro has been cooking up some of Malibu’s most beloved dishes, and certainly its favorite burrito, for nearly three decades. We sat down with Castro to hear the inside story behind the community landmark. ✎ written by Holly Bieler photographed by Julie Wuellner
L
ily Castro has been busy for thirty years. Generally, the discovery of a nondescript, locally-cherished family eatery in a suburban town by a city’s foodie elite is accompanied by some degree of sudden pandemonium; insufferable wait-times and constantly clogged phone lines, lines of out-of-towners and grumbling locals stretching out the door, frenetic kitchens selling out each day. And while Point Dume Plaza’s beloved eatery Lily’s has received a slew of wider attention in recent years, with glowing write-ups and shout-outs appearing everywhere from Infatuation to Eater to

LILY AND ABEL Lily was only 16 when she married her husband Abel in El Salvador. Just two years later they opened Lily’s together in the Point Dume Plaza.
LILY’S MALIBU Originally the Donut Shop, Lily opened her cafe in 1989.
Los Angeles Magazine, the newfound recognition hasn’t changed much about the day-to-day at Lily’s. They’ve always sold out of their trademark burritos, had lines stretching out the door, had hour-long wait-time that people grumble about, though they never cancel their orders. “We’ve been busy since we opened,” Castro, the café’s namesake owner said recently. “It’s always been like this.” With her wide smile and boundless energy, Castro has become one of Malibu’s most recognizable and beloved faces since opening up Lily’s some 30 years ago. Trying to have an uninterrupted conversation with her anywhere in the Point Dume Plaza is all but an exercise in futility—inevitably, about every few minutes, someone will come give her a
hug, inquire about the restaurant, her family, her life. “The local people [here] support me so much,” Castro said. Originally from El Salvador, Castro was only 17 and just married when she moved to the United States with her husband Abel, following in the footsteps of her sister, who had moved a few years earlier to head up the Donut Shop on Point Dume with her boyfriend. Castro spoke hardly any English when she landed in the U.S., settling in Oxnard with Abel and starting to pick up shifts at her sister’s shop. Castro had only lived in the United States for a year, was just settling into her new life, when an opportunity suddenly dropped into her lap: her sister had had enough of her doughnut shop; did Lily want it?

BUSINESS OWNER Cooking was Lily’s first passion, and she always dreamt of one day owning her own business.
For Castro, taking over her sister’s small café amounted to the culmination of a lifelong dream. Growing up she had developed a passion and shown a talent for cooking at a young age, helping out her mom and family members prepare family meals in the kitchen from as early as she can remember. “Back then, they [taught you to cook] early, and you helped,” Castro says. “I was always watching my Tia Cruz and my grandmas cooking.” Castro remembers one evening when she was eight years old, as her mother was laying out the ingredients to cook dinner, she remembered a last-minute errand she had to run, leaving Lily at home for no more than an hour. When she returned, Castro said, her mother could hardly believe her eyes. “When she came back, I had all the food ready for her,” Castro said. “I made chopped meat that turned out very juicy, with tomatoes and bell pepper, with a side of rice. My mom went, ‘Wow!’ She was very surprised.” From that point on Castro was constantly in the kitchen, testing out recipes and ingredients, making meals for her brothers and sisters. “They always said I’m a good cook,” she said. “It’s my passion.” So when the opportunity to open her own restaurant emerged, Lily jumped at it, she and Abel quickly taking over the
lease and replacing the tired old doughnut shop sign with a new name and signage. The little Heathercliff doughnut shop would heretofore be called, Lily’s Café. Was she intimidated at all, opening her own business at just 18 years old? “Was I kind of scared?” she said. “Always, in your life, you have moments where you go, ‘Oh my God.’ But I had support. Always.” And if at 18 years old Lily didn’t have a surplus of experience, what she did have was a clear-cut vision. Almost immediately Lily and Abel decided they would do away with the shop’s stale menu of sandwiches and pastries, instead opting for dishes that reminded them of their native El Salvador and the home countries of their friends from countries like Mexico and Guatemala. Lily, Abel and some of their best friends began feverishly cooking and taste-testing, tweaking old family recipes, combining different elements of a bunch, trying to put together the most delicious menu they could. “We got together and put all our ideas together,” Lily said. “We invented. When things worked, we’d give samples to people. That’s the way we came up with the menu.” Initially their menu was relatively limited, including chicken burritos and tacos, but almost immediately sales went through the roof. Their top seller from
day one, Lily said, was their breakfast burrito, still their most ordered dish some 30 years later. “It was easy,” Castro said of how she came up with the recipe for her most famed dish. “We put beans, we put cheese, we put a little of this, of that, and when I tried it–” she finishes that thought with an effusive chef’s kiss. If it sounds simple, don’t let Lily fool you. While her breakfast burrito might only have a few ingredients, the perfection with which each is cooked elevates the dish into the echelon of all-time great burritos. Its beans are incomparably creamy, eggs always fluffy and perfected seasoned, bacon crisped within an inch of its life, spectacularly fatty and crispy, all wrapped up inside a freshly-griddled OUR SPECIAL TIP
If you’ve never been to Lily’s, your first trip should always include her trademark breakfast burrito. It’s as good as they say. Don’t be pigeonholed though— dishes from the chicken and vegetarian burritos to the chile relleno might not get as much hype, but they’re absolutely delicious.
flour tortilla. Since the café opened, Lily’s breakfast burrito has become something of its trademark dish, and that which has garnered fame for the café, ranking #17 On Eater’s list of the best breakfast burritos in Los Angeles. A commendable ranking, to be sure, though if you ask any Malibu-ite, one that’s about 16 spots too low. Or ask just anyone with good taste in breakfast burritos. “I have customers that live in Santa Monica, live in downtown L.A., who buy two, three breakfast burritos at a time and freeze them,” Lily said. “When they come home they want breakfast burritos and nothing else.” Within a couple years of its 1989 opening, Lily’s Café had expanded beyond

their old menu, and now boasts everything from chilaquiles and enchiladas to tortas, as well as their famous burritos. Each dish is still cooked with the same quality of ingredients and meticulous preparation that Lily established when she first opening the café. Her infamously delicious pinto beans, smooth, with a subtle garlic kick, still simmer for three hours on the dot to achieve their optimal consistency, luxurious, rich and almost sauce-like. The chicken for their chicken burritos (which, to my mind, are criminally under-appreciated) is still marinated in a special green marinade for three hours, while their pork sits in a secret sauce of spices, developed when the restaurant first opened, for eight hours as it always has to achieve its unctuous,
unique flavor. “People are so happy with what I have, if I change something then they’re mad,” Lily said, with a laugh. “I can change anything here but the menu.” Which isn’t to say nothing has changed since Lily opened her café 32 years ago. She has had a daughter, Lindsi Castro, who graduated from Malibu High in 2008 and now lives in San Francisco. And if everything goes according to plan, the café should expand into an even bigger space over the next year or so. But if she has experienced many blessings in that time, Lily has also experienced tragedy. Her husband Abel passed away in 2008 following a battle with cancer, and in 2014 Lily herself was diagnosed with breast cancer. Even while undergoing chemotherapy Lily made it a
point to get into the kitchen, and by 2017 she was fully in remission. Almost immediately, Lily says, she was back in the café. “I love to work,” she says. Indeed, Lily insists, she will never retire. She loves coming to the café everyday, she says, because it represents her dream realized. “I’m very proud about everything,” she says. “How this [has] grown. Sometimes I cannot believe it. Sometimes I’m in the kitchen working, washing dishes, and I remember, I am Lily.” MM

HIKE OF THE MONTH
SANDSTONE PEAK In every issue this year, we will introduce you to one spectacular Malibu Hike. At an end elevation of 3,111 feet, Mishe Mokwa Trail to Sandstone Peak takes you to the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains, making it the ideal trail for the adventurous hiker. ✎ written by Lauren Label photographed by Julie Wuellner

tanding on top of the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains, breathing in the high elevation air looking over the horizon, one feels free as a bird. Sandstone Peak, also known as Mt. Allen, was given its second name by a group of Boy Scouts in the 1960s. In an attempt to honor Circle X benefactor Herbert Allen, the Boy Scouts petitioned the United States Department of the Interior for the name of the summit to be changed. Although they were denied, the Scouts held an unofficial dedication ceremony for their leader. The peak is part of the Circle X Ranch, a former Boy Scout camp of the western Santa Monica Mountains, an area that is administered by the National Park Service and part of the Santa Monica
Mountains National Recreation Area. Today, a plaque stands on the summit honoring Herbert Allen. “The Mishe Mokwa Trail to Sandstone Peak is that rare trail that you can do over and over again and never get tired of,” says Founder and Editor-In-Chief of Modern Hiker Casey Schreiner. “Depending on the season, the weather conditions, and the time of day, this trail will highlight new and different aspects of a route that has a little something for everyone. This particular trail is hands down my favorite hike in the L.A. area, and probably my favorite in California.” Located in the Santa Monica Mountains near the border of Los Angeles and Ventura County, Sandstone Peak yields breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando Valley. Hikers can choose between two main trails to the summit: the Sandstone Peak
Trail, which runs 3 miles round-trip and has an elevation gain of 1,000 feet, or the Mishe Mokwa Trail, a 6-mile trip with an elevation gain of 1,400 feet. Parking can be found on Yerba Buena Road one mile past Circle X Ranch, with both entrances to Sandstone Peak trail head and Backbone Trail. After passing Circle X Ranch, hikers first see parking for the Sandstone Peak trail head. A couple of miles past lies the entrance to the Backbone Trail, which ultimately connects to the main Mishe Mokwa Trail. No fees or permits are required for this hike. Hikers are welcome to bring dogs but they must be on a leash and should have plenty of water for themselves and their furry friends. Coming in through the Mishe Mokwa Trail entrance, there is a map detailing the area with need-to-know warnings about wildlife and safety. Some of the na-

ABOUT THIS HIKE Distance: 6.1 miles (loop) Elevation change: 1,656ft Hiking time: Approx. 3 hours and 30 minutes Location: Mishe Mokwa Trail, Westlake Village, CA 91361 Open to: Hikers, dogs, and climbers Fees & Permits: no fee required THE BASIC DIRECTIONS FOR THIS LOOP ARE: 1. Begin in a gravel parking lot on Yerba Buena Road, one mile past Circle X Ranch. 2. Start hiking at the backbone trail head entrance which will lead you to Mishe Mokwa Trail. 3. After a third of a mile, turn right taking the connection to Mishe Mokwa Trail 4. At roughly the mile and a half mark, the dirt path passes the Echo Cliffs, with the Balancing Rock at the northwest end of the cliffs. 5. Nearly two miles in you arrive at Split Rock a picnic area. 6. Past the picnic area around a mile in a half the trail climbs to join the Backbone Trail
7. Turn Left to continue the loop or turn right to the outand-back side trail Tri-Peaks, adding 1.2 miles to your hike. 8. To reach Sandstone Peak continue left on the Backbone trail which curves southward and then east. 9. The next turn off you come across is for Inspiration Point, this is one mile from Sandstone Peak 10. Backbone Trail passes beneath the summit where a short trail leads to junction where you can take a stairway leading up to the summit or head back to the parking lot. 11. Right before you reach the summit, the trail dissolves into numerous use trails which will take you the rest of the way. 12. Before leaving the summit, make sure to leave your mark in the summit register with your name, date, and little note for future hikers 13. Once you return to Backbone Trail continue a few hundred feet before making your descent back to the parking lot.
tive wildlife include bellied lizards, scrub jays, wild hares, quails, coyotes, and rattlesnakes. Remember to be mindful of poison oak and ticks and pack the essentials such as water, food, and sun protection. At the gate, the trail begins and continues steeply uphill. A couple of strides in, you reach the first fork in the road. To the right is the Mishe Mokwa trail and to the left the trail leads you directly to Sandstone Peak, which is just a little over a mile away. Mishe Mokwa Trail is a loop which also leads you to Sandstone Peak. Although it’s the longer of the two options, the surroundings make it well worth it. Staying to the right down Mishe Mokwa, the trail winds along the mountains with a magnificent glimpse of the valley that seems to extend further from view. At roughly the mile and a half mark, you can look across the valley and see daring sandstone cliffs named Echo Cliffs. These cliffs are a popular spot for mountain climbers, and you may even catch a few making their ascent. At the northwest end of the cliffs, you can spot the Balancing Rock, large piece of rock that seems to be floating on a smaller rock below. Winding down the trail, you eventually reach a low-point known as Split Rock. Split Rock is another great boulder visible on the hike, this one split into three pieces with one of the cracks so big you can walk through. Split Rock also includes a picnic area and after nearly two miles, this is an excellent spot to take a break in the shade and recharge. OUR SPECIAL TIP Just beyond the picnic area, you We suggest heading out to Mishe Mokwa Trail in will see signs for two side trail opSandstone Peak in the tions. Three and a half miles in, keep a look out to your right for the signs that lead to Inspiration Point. The aptly named Inspiration Point is well-worth a quick pit-stop and should leave hikers feeling inspired to push on for the summit. Passing just beneath the summit, a short trail will lead you to the top. Upon reaching the top breathing it all in, you are 1,075 feet above the trail head you started from. After looking around at the top, you will see the plaque dedicated to Herbert Allen with a rusty mailbox below that holds a small notebook which serves as the summit register. It’s customary to leave a message to mark the accomplishment of reaching the summit, as well as the date and your name. Once you make it back down to Backbone Trail, you hike uphill a few hundred feet before making a steep descent back to the parking lot. We highly recommend the Mishe Mokwa Trail at Sandstone Peak for an adventurous outdoor experience with mesmerizing Malibu views. Check back next issue for another great Malibu hike! MM

TED MCDONALD’S FITNESS TIPS
3 SIMPLE WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT It seems everyone is consistently on a quest to lose weight - whether it be a major weightloss journey or just those last pesky few pounds. Nowadays, the weightloss industry is packed with magic tricks, pills and regimes and yet, the simple way is often the most effective.
F
or years we’ve been searching for the perfect summer body, always disappointed when we don’t lose enough weight, or don’t see the muscle definition we have been hoping for. I hear it all the time: “How can I get rid of this excess under my arms, or around my thighs, or around my belly?” There are multi-billion dollar industries dedicated to helping us lose weight. Some of those diets, exercise regimens and trinkets may work, but do yourself a favor; don’t put yourself through the trouble. Thankfully, there are a few tried and true, simple ways to make weight loss happen in a safe and healthy way. I’m not going to sell you on any kind of supplement or force you to buy some weird apparatus. My methods are simple. They might not always to be easy, but they are simple. And for the most part, they require one critical ingredient: self-discipline. We need the
discipline to say ‘no’ when appropriate and ‘yes’ when appropriate. I’ll leave it to you to decided when to do which.
1. Eat Less Sugar There is an old adage: ‘You cannot exercise away a bad diet.’ This could not be more true in our day in age. According to the New Hampshire division of the Department of Health and Human services, two hundred years ago Americans ate about two lbs. of sugar per year. In 1970, we ate about 123 lbs. per year, now it’s up to 152lbs of sugar per year, on average. That means we’re eating 3 pounds, or 6 cups, per week! Oftentimes, people aren’t even cognizant of how much sugar they are consuming; sugar is everywhere and it is in just about everything, from ketchup to bread to milk. Sweetened liquids, including healthy-looking juices, can also be a nasty, and tasty, culprit. But if you start eating more whole foods and
less processed foods you will naturally consume less sugar and drop those unwanted pounds. Another tip, if you’re buying something from the grocery store, is to see if you can pronounce all the ingredients. You’ll be amazed at the preservatives that keep our processed foods on the shelf for weeks at a time. Another technique is to make sure your store bought foods have 4 ingredients or less.
2. 4 Workouts A Week It’s a simple plan and actually not that difficult. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends healthy adults should exercise 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. Vigorous activity is defined as exercising while being unable to complete a full sentence without pausing. That means you must get your heart rate up! I recommend a variety of exercise including

VARIETY IS KEY Switching up your workouts to include some cardio such as running or HIIT workouts with strength training such as vinyasa yoga or crossfit is ideal.
some cardio such as running, hiking, swimming or bicycling, some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), along with some strength training like weights or vinyasa yoga, or even crossfit. As you begin to get into a regular routine, you’ll start feeling better, and hopefully eating better, thus those last few pounds will drop away naturally.
3. Give TRE a Try This is the topic I’m most fascinated with because I’m reading so many incredible studies about its benefits. TRE (Time Restricted Eating) involves giving your intake system a break by eating or drinking anything except for water for at least 12-16 hours each day. This recommendation is, once again, simple but not easy. Separate all your caloric intake, including your morning coffee and your evening glass of wine or chocolate, by 8-12 hours. For instance if you finish dinner at 8 p.m., don’t take
MM_Column_Ted McDonald_FINAL.indd 129
in anything but water until after 8 a.m. You’ll get even better results if you wait until 10 a.m. or even noon, though that can be difficult. I return to a scientific study that separated two groups of mice, both of whom were put on the same high-fat, high-sugar diet. One group was given access to the food 24 hours, 7 days a week, while the other group was only given access to the food for 8 hours each day. The group that noshed all day long developed obesity, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease at greater rates than did the group with a restricted eating schedule. My prediction is you’re going to start seeing more and more studies about TRE or intermittent fasting in the near future. It really works. Start by going two weeks for 12 hours. If you feel positive changes, which I bet you will, move on to eating in an 11 hour period. Then see if you can move to 10. Not only will you shed those pounds you’ve been trying to, but your MM energy will also increase.

he Malibu Beach Yoga team has welcomed their newest member, Trish Bianco, to their wonderful team of instructors. Bianco had been living in Maui the past eight years, and now she’s bringing all of her yoga expertise to Malibu. “I have a place in Malibu, so I was coming back and forth,” Bianco said. “I just sold my business in Hawaii to come back here full time.” Bianco opened her own yoga studio in Hawaii, Infusion Barre & HOT Yoga Maui, the first of its kind in Hawaii. She feels her style, which focuses on ab work, will help add to the already diverse slate of classes Malibu Beach Yoga offers. Prior to her time in Hawaii, Bianco spent time in various areas throughout the world. She was born in New York and went to college in Australia at Bond University. She began her training to become a yoga teacher there, and started teaching her own classes when she was just 20 years old. Bianco also taught at various loca-
tions throughout Los Angeles, such as Santa Monica and Venice, before moving to Hawaii in 2010. “I was noticing I have a seven-year itch thing going, like I was here for seven years, [there] for seven years,” Bianco said. “I was ready to come back and be amongst people and society.” Bianco has enjoyed getting to know her new team, and said that she is excited to further connect with the community. She’s also looking forward to taking yoga classes herself, something she couldn’t do in Hawaii due to the lack of studios. But she’s a teacher first and foremost, and she’s excited to help create the best experience possible for her students. “I feel like you can see that shift in somebody when they come in and they’ve got a little bit of a guard up,” she said. “And you can see that layer kind of just peel off through the class at some point.” If you’re ready for a worldclass yoga workout at one of the best yoga studios in Malibu, visit Bianco during one of her weekly classes. MM
GLOBAL EXPERIENCE Recruited by fellow Malibu Beach Yoga instructor Kat McGee, Bianco moved from Maui to her home in Malibu. In addition to teaching in Hawaii, Bianco has taught in Australia and Los Angeles, working as a yoga instructor since she was 20 years old.

planning is more periodic,” Katch said. “[It] is very intensive upfront, and then we conduct semi-annual or annual reviews depending on how often things change and what they need.” Back in 1995, when the firm was getting established, Katch recruited the help of Alan Hopkins, who Katch had met while earning his MBA at Pepperdine University. “I gave up my job, gave up my security, to take a flyer and work for Robert,” said Hopkins, now Chief Economic Strategist at the firm. “23 years and $700 million later, it seems to have worked out.” Now, the firm has over 800 clients across the country. While their clientele consists mainly
of families, the firm has seen a recent increase in young adults looking to establish a long-term financial plan. Katch says many of their clients are intergenerational; some of their earliest clients now have children who the firm works with as well. Katch, a Southern California native, has deep roots in his Westlake Village community and in Malibu as well, having served as an associate treasurer at Pepperdine and taught undergraduate courses at the university. This community ethos has been at the heart of Manchester Financial since its inception. The team consistently welcomes interns from Pepperdine, and Hopkins has spearhead-

the firm’s support of local charities, including serving as President of the Cancer Support Community. Manchester Financial deeply cares about how they can help their clients, particularly in times of need. Their services are often especially important and valuable when people face a significant transition in their life, whether that be retirement, inheritance, or even the death of a spouse. “If there’s something we do exceptionally well, it’s guiding people through these transitions to keep their plan on track,” Katch said. “It’s those types of things where you really get to help people,” Hopkins added. “I don’t think about what they can do for
me or whether they can become a client. We just start a conversation, and what I’m trying to find out is are there any resources I have that can improve their life.” Katch knows his work is more than just a job: he is deeply invested in the lives of his clients, and he loves coming into work every day to help them. “I want to be doing this when I’m 80 years old,” said Katch. Hopkins echoed his friend’s sentiment, confidently stating that he’ll “never retire.” Their passion is the foundation which Manchester Financial stands on, and you can always count on them for great financial planning from people who genuinely care.

INNOVATING EDUCATION Oaks Christian’s IDEA Lab sets a new standard for high school academics, creating a new space for students to gain a hands-on learning experience and turn ideas into reality. ✎ written by Michael Gonzalez

his fall, Oaks Christian High School will introduce its innovative IDEA Lab, providing an academic environment for students unlike any other school in California. The IDEA Lab, which stands for Innovation, Design, Engineering, and Aeronautics, will occupy 10,000 square feet and house top of the line technological tools to give students a unique, handson learning experience. The lab has become a reality thanks to the passion and hard work of Dr. Matthew Northrop, the Associate Head of School for Academics, and Amanda Turk, the high school’s physics teacher. The initial conversation was to move the old engineering makerspace from its current basement location to a bigger room in the Bedrosian Pavilion. But Northrop thought of something more ambitious. “What if we had a whole building?” he had asked Turk. That question is now on the precipice of being answered. The IDEA Lab will contain classrooms for physics, robotics, electrical engineering, and computer science, as well as a flex
classroom and an additional conference room. The lab will also house metal and wood fabrication machines, 3D printers, and devices that will allow students to create devices like robots and drones. Northrup and Turk envision the students designing projects with real-world application and purpose, infused with the same Christian empathetic values instilled in all students at the school. “We don’t want our kids just building stuff to see how high it can go, or how cool it is,” Northrop said. “We want them to be building things that are purposeful.” These projects are aimed to help people’s lives, and could range from prosthetic limbs to water purification systems. During their senior year, students will participate in a Capstone Project, where they will apply what they have learned to identify real-world problems and develop solutions. “They have the opportunity at the end of their junior year to propose a project, which is hopefully interdisciplinary, so they can be working in teams,” Turk said. Students will be taught by faculty hailing from prestigious universities, including Turk, who graduated from MIT,

Tyler Hernandez from Cal-Poly, and Juan Velasquez, an alumni from both Berkeley and UCLA who also currently works at Rocketdyne. Joining the staff this year are Bill Webb and Greg Gillis-Smith, who worked on the Mars Rover project. Northrop and Turk envision their students furthering their education outside the lab by participating in internships with local companies, while also receiving real-world feedback on their projects from industry partners. The IDEA Lab will also offer pathways to unify different

departments throughout the school, as students in the lab can create products that can be marketed and sold by the entrepreneurial students, and film students can document how these projects work. The middle school will also have access to the robotics lab after school. This unification is hoped to extend into the surrounding community, where the public could come in and use the facility and tools, while younger kids could participate in rocketry and robotics camp. “A community makerspace,” Turk called
it. “There’s so many people who, I think, would love to use this kind of space.” The school aims to open the IDEA Lab in late October or early November, initially launching its wood and metal fabrication and robotics labs. In the summer of 2019, the second phase will open its electrical engineering, computer science, physics, and new rocketry labs. After that, the future is limitless. “It’s already starting to take off,” said Northrop. “But where it’s going to go in the next five to ten years excites all of us.” MM

THE MAN BEHIND THE SIGNS Jay Luchs’ eponymous, red-and-white ‘For Lease’ signs are ubiquitous in pretty much every high-rent corner of L.A., and Malibu is no exception. Who’s the man behind the name? ✎ written by Holly Bieler photographed by Julie Wuellner

f you want to get an idea of how many e-mails Jay Luchs gets in a day, ask him to empty his pockets. There’s an iPhone, which for all intents and purposes serves as Luch’s office phone, the majority of his days spent behind the wheel of his BMW, zipping between the seemingly endless supply of luxury retail spaces he represents across the city, from Abbot Kinney to Rodeo Dr. to Cross Creek. Standard stuff, OK, and then— is that a Blackberry? “For e-mails,” Luchs says nonchalantly, pulling a Blackberry Classic out his pocket. “I can’t type on [iPhones].” And if owning a Blackberry solely for the purpose of writing and sending e-mails doesn’t paint a vivid enough portrait of the schedule Luchs faces on any given day, the third thing he keeps on his person at all times should do it. Yes, that’s right: it’s a second Blackberry Classic utilized solely for the purpose of writing and sending even more e-mails. So how many e-mails does Jay Luchs get in a day? “A lot,” he says. If you’ve spent any amount of time in L.A.’s tonier areas, chances are you’ve seen Luch’s name. Chances are you’ve seen it 10,000 times. Pick a street at random in Beverly Hills or Venice or Malibu, or a street at random where you can buy a T-shirt for $1,000, at least, and you’re sure
to see his trademark red-and-white signs plastered on any prominent stretch of vacant storefront. Gibson Guitars’ recent lease of the old Capitol Records building? Luchs brokered that, as he did the the massive new Eataly that just opened up in the Century City mall, the L.A. outposts for brands from Lanvin to Jimmy Choo, and a N. Rodeo building that set records for the highest commercial sale in L.A.’s history when he sold it to LVMH in 2012. In Malibu, more specifically, Jay Luchs is best known for leasing basically everything. He headed leasing for the Malibu Lumber Yard when it first opened in 2005, handles property in Cross Creek, Malibu Colony Plaza and Malibu Sands, and is currently at work leasing out both the Whole Foods Park center, which will open next year, and the Ranch, slated to open in 2020. “I don’t even think I realize how crazy it is,” Luchs says of his workload, which on any given day includes countless high-profile properties he’s representing, and hundreds of deals in various stages of negotiation. “It may be crazy? I don’t know. I’m just doing it.” If Luchs, one of the most prominent and successful commercial real estate brokers in the city, seems today distinctly suited to the job he has today, his road to it has been somewhat circuitous. Originally from Potomac, Maryland, Luchs was born into a family with deep real estate roots. His great-grandfather, Morton Luchs, co-founded the Shannon & Luchs company in the early 1900s, a prominent Maryland development firm which was responsible for the 1937 construction of a Potomac shopping center widely cited as the inspiration for the modern mall. Jay’s father would eventually take over the business, by then a full-service brokerage firm. Despite his family’s history in the field, Luchs says he never thought about a career in real estate growing up. Instead, he found himself drawn to entertainment,
and the summer after his graduation from the University of Virginia, picked up for L.A. after landing an internship at Brillstein-Grey Entertainment (now Brillstein Entertainment Partners). If he didn’t fall in love with the job, Luchs immediately did with the city, and as the summer came to a close and he readied himself for his return home, Luchs realized he had to stay in L.A. “I was supposed to leave when the summer ended,” he said. “But it was [too] hard.” Instead he decamped to a Brentwood apartment, sent his resume around to networks and agencies, and was soon at the helm of a promising career in current programming at the television network UPN. Fast forward 6 years, however, and Luchs was ready for a career change. Having grown weary of current programming, Luchs decided he would try his hand at something new, and after interviewing at a range of companies, accepted a spot in the mailroom at Endeavor (now WME), a competitive but grueling gig Luchs hoped might position him for a professional shift into television development. However two weeks in, exhausted and surrounded by 22 year-olds, Luchs knew he’d made a mistake. “I had had enough,” he says. “I thought, maybe it’s time to get into a business that from what I’ve heard, gets better with age.” That day he called up Insignia/Edward S. Gordon, a real estate services firm based in Beverly Hills where he’d interviewed just a few weeks prior. Any chance they’d still hire him? he inquired trepidatiously. “And they did,” he said. Luchs went to work in the investment sales department as an assistant to two realtors, helping facilitate deals and steadily learning the ropes. If Luchs didn’t catch the real estate bug immediately, he did two years later, when one day he drove past 468 N. Rodeo Dr. Immedi-

ately the sprawling, two-story storefront caught Luch’s eye. Perched at the corner of Rodeo Dr. and Santa Monica Blvd. the building felt unique in its location and was hard to miss: had stately columns, elegant stone detailing and massive arched windows. Even better yet: it was vacant. Luchs did some digging and discovered Tommy Hilfiger had been the last to lease the space, whom an Insignia/Edward S. Gordon co-worker happened to be personally acquainted with. Eventually Luchs was connected with the Tommy Hilfiger team, and although he was technically still an assistant, was soon thereafter named the property’s listing agent. Even before Luchs had successfully leased the property, to Brooks Brothers for a 15-year contract, he knew he had found his calling. “It was an incredible experience to be able to call on tenants and say that I had a listing on Rodeo Dr.,” he said. “It didn’t feel normal. It felt like, kind of crazy. And I loved it.” Luchs hadn’t just stumbled upon a career; he’d also stumbled on a niche. Soon he was the go-to name for luxury brands looking to rent, lease or buy commercial spaces “My passion is for fashion brands and helping them find locations to buy,” he said. “It’s just what I love.” In the years since his Brooks Brothers sale, Luchs has worked with a veritable who’s who of luxury brands, from Louis

Vuitton to Gucci to to Missoni and Christian Dior. In 2013, Luchs left CBRE, which had ultimately acquired Insignia/Edward S. Gordon, for Newmark Knight Frank, at which he currently serves as vice chairman. Now heading an office of six, Luchs has become one of the most successful commercial real estate agents in the city, and recently partnered with Steven Schaefer to head Newmark’s new residential real estate wing. Their first sale closed at the end of last year, a Malibu home that sold for $26 million to none other than Simon Cowell. Which isn’t to say that Luchs’ career has been all smooth sailing. Bricks-andmortar retail has taken as shoppers increasingly turn online, a setbalk Luchs contends his industry is still learning to navigate. “It’s challenging,” he said. “Retail is changing forever, like the publishing industry, or the music industry. It doesn’t
mean it’s dead. And It doesn’t mean it’s not going to be as cool as ever. But we’re going through a transformation.” Does he worry about what that transportation could spell for his indstury? “It’s not setting he back,” he says. “There are still tenants doing deals, one way or another.” Indeed Luchs says he believes there is a significant role for brick-and-mortar space to play as online retail becomes more dominant. “I think a lot of online brands that might have started online [are seeing] the value in brick-and-mortar,” he said. “ I think in time, when the dust settles, their brands will realize that to be the best they can be, they need both: online, so people can buy their product 24 hours a day, and brick-and-mortar to show who they are as a brand.” Luchs mentioned brands like Warby Parker, the popular glasses retailer which began online but has gone on to open retail stores, as well as the RealReal, a luxury
online consignment shop which recently opened up their first L.A. outpost on Melrose Ave., a deal that Luchs was behind. Now in his 17th year in the business, with an impressive degree of success by any measure under his belt, we asked if the real estate business has indeed gotten better with age, as he had imagined? It has, he said. “Knowledge is power, right?” he said. “Over the years in a business like real estate, the more you know, the more you can offer people. You become the authority on an area. You know the rents, you know the landlords. ” Despite his crazy schedule, the daily drives from the west side to the east side, and the two Blackberrys just for e-mailing, Luchs says he can’t imagine doing anything else. “Making phone calls, trying to find tenants, that’s something I enjoy,” he said. “If there were more hours in the day, I would just do it all the time.” MM

SHEN SCHULZ
A TRUE MALIBU AGENT A lifelong Malibu-ite, Shen Schulz’s intimate knowledge of the community and keen understanding of its housing market have earned him rave reviews from clients and the #1 sales spot for Sotheby’s Malibu this year. We asked Shen 10 questions to learn more about his career and life in Malibu.
Have you always worked in real estate? If not, how did you get into the industry? I’ve been an entrepreneur since I was 15 years old. I founded Malibu’s Car Wash behind Taverna Tony’s, and when I was 25 started my own cleaning business. However following 9/11 the cleaning industry collapsed, and I needed to reinvent myself. In 2001 I began my real estate career, initially reaching out to clients from my cleaning business. I had already proven myself to them and earned their trust, and many of them gave me the opportunity to sell their homes. I’ve gone on to forge lifelong friendships with many of these first clients. You’re originally from Malibu and still live here. Do you think that gives you specific insight into the community that you’re able to pass along to your clients? I grew up on Point Dume and in Malibu West. This history, coupled with my 18 years working in Malibu real estate, has provided me with an intimate un-
The Malibu Spirit When he is not busy selling real estate, Schulz enjoys hitting the waves and surfing. He passed this passion on to his twin sons, Kai and Bodhi (pictured above). The three often go out surfing together in spots like Zuma and Little dume, the very beaches where Schulz learned to surf himself.
derstanding of and unique perspective on the city, and solidified my reputation as an expert in Malibu real estate. It’s important to know as much as possible about the community, from the schools and home values in each neighborhood to politics and building codes, and even the ocean currents or prevailing winds in popular beaches and coves. Being an area specialist gives me a unique ability to define the micro-climate details of Malibu, its culture and its neighborhoods to any home buyer or seller, and to protect my clients’ investment in their luxury property purchase or sale.
What would you say are some of the reasons Malibu is such an in-demand place to live right now? Malibu sits close to L.A. but is a coastal suburb at heart, with unparalleled natural beauty that creates a very positive, healthy lifestyle. The public schools are some of the best in the nation and many

people feel, as I do, the small town vibe is a great place to live and raise children outside of the bustle of Los Angeles, yet only an hour away from Downtown or LAX. What are some of your favorite things about both working in, and living in, the community? The people and friends are the best! Because of Malibu’s geographic separation from LA, locals often choose to stay in Malibu on weekend evenings and take in a sunset and the natural ambiance. This creates a collaborative and fun, small town feeling. Local bands at Vintage Grocers in the summer, hiking area trails, horseback riding, and surfers scattered along the coast all add to the beach-y, small town atmosphere.
a meal with family and friends, or surfing with my twin sons, Bodhi and Kai. We’ll often hit some of the same spots where I first learned to surf, like Zuma and Little Dume. My wife Ema also grew up in Malibu, and we love that we can raise our sons in the same fantastic family environment we did. You’re consistently ranked in the top 1/2% of all realtors among the Sotheby’s International Realty network. Can you characterize the key/keys to your success? Because of my extraordinary sales record
These relationships allow me to broadcast my luxury properties across the nation. If you hadn’t made your career in real estate, what do you think you would be doing? I love music but if I played professionally it might take the fun out of it. I might consider being a professional myth buster, Unicorn wrangler, sloth racing specialist, or in-house philosopher. Is there a single sale or project in your career you’re most proud of? One thing I am honored by is being chosen by some of the original Malibu families to represent their estates. It’s an honor and privilege that my reputation has earned me their trust. Recently I sold the Malibu Playhouse, an iconic local theatre owned by an original Malibu family that was a valued community hub for nearly three decades. In the end the property received multiple offers and sold $200k above asking price to an undisclosed new owner who may choose to keep the legacy of the creative space for the community alive. It was a privilege to be part of such a positive transaction that may continue to benefit the entire community.
What would you say are the hottest areas to buy in Malibu right now? Malibu is a unique community with a complex and layered housing market. There are important details to understand about each specific neighborhood; the homes values and attributes are often delineated by a curve in the road or rock outcropping along the beach. Statistically, the majority of homes sales in the past two years have Musician Shen Schulz and his wife Ema, at Sunset Restaurant You’ve worked as an agent for been located in Malibu Park, in 2014. A SIT DOWN WITH
ERIC HASKELL Malibu Magazine, sat down with luxury real estate agent, Eric Haskell, to learn more about his life in Malibu and how he built his successful career.
A
s a real estate agent for The Agency, Eric Haskell has sold properties up and down the coast in luxury neighborhoods such as Beverly Hills, Montecito and Malibu. An entrepreneur at heart, Eric uses his background in the tech and design industries to best serve his clients and further his successful career. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND?
I grew up in Santa Barbara, which was an amazing place as a kid, I started surfing and it began my love for the outdoors. Later I went on to UC Santa Barbara. After UCSB I worked in tech for a few years, but realized I was an entrepreneur at heart. I got involved in dealing in art and rare furnishings. I soon picked up a great roster of clients and would help curate their collections. From there, I started advising those same clients on developing high-end homes and creating custom furniture and lighting. Real estate was always a passion of mine and I developed and sold my own properties. When I got my license, I hit the ground running with a lot of the clients I had worked with in other endeavors. They trust me and know I will always look out for them. That helped propel me to a higher level very quickly.
HOW DOES YOUR CREATIVE EXPERIENCE PLAY INTO YOUR REAL ESTATE CAREER?
I think it made for an easy transition. I have a diverse background, but a lot of it applies perfectly to this business. I understand architecture, how to market a home, and I love being creative. I’m a very visual person and I think that I’ve had to flex both sides of my brain throughout my career. A home is so emotional and close to both the buyer and seller. It’s one of the biggest financial and personal commitments of people’s lives; I just try to really take care of them. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY SEPARATES YOU FROM OTHER AGENTS?
I treat people like family, and in a collaborative way, I try to let go of ego. I’m definitely not the general perception of a realtor. I put my heart in to every transaction. I market creatively and want people to be blown away by my videos and content. I’m insanely ambitious when it comes to negotiating, marketing and putting together a deal. I love the process. I jump out of bed every day as the sun comes up excited to make it happen. WHAT ARE THE HOTTEST AREAS IN MALIBU FOR BUYERS RIGHT NOW?
Some of the prices happening on Carbon are eye-popping. I love Point Dume, it’s
definitely it’s own sub-culture, it lends itself to a healthy lifestyle and is a true surf/ outdoor community. I think it’s insanely undervalued. I think Malibu Park is amazing. Ramirez Canyon is one of my favorites. Serra Retreat is great and having Whole Foods move in is going to be a game changer. Or you can buy a mobile home in Paradise Cove or the Point Dume Club in the million dollar mobile homes and live right at the beach. You have to decide what lifestyle you want. And there’s a neighborhood that caters to it. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE JUST BEGINNING THEIR REAL ESTATE CAREER?
Just go for it. Learn, study, immerse yourself, work with mentors, and ask questions. You have to be hyper-focused and passionate to succeed in anything. A lot of people start in real estate with fantasies of making huge commissions right off the bat, without putting in the work. You have to hustle and make it happen and truly believe you have what it takes. If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will believe in you. You need to know every house, know every finish, know every price per square foot. It’s your job. Bring joy and passion to it; people gravitate towards that. And most of all be a good person, be ethical and kind. MM

5 QUESTIONS FOR …
FIREFIGHTER ALEX ABDALLA Malibu Magazine interviewed local firefighter Alex Abdalla about his career experience, as well as fire and flooding prevention tips during our upcoming brush fire season.
1
How long have you worked in Malibu and where did you work before coming here? I’ve been at this station since Decemeber of 2015. Almost three years. Before that, I was in West Hollywood. I worked there for four years, and prior to that I was stationed in South LA.

What are some good fire prevention tips? With fire prevention, especially since we’re in the middle of brush fire season, making sure that all of the dead shrubbery or dead leaves [are clear] around the house is vital. The reason for that is, if there is a fire, we will look at houses we can easily defend, and ones we cannot. When we start getting into the rains, clearing out your gutters is very important as well, so when the rains do come you don’t have roof issues or roof leakage. Also, if a brush fire did happen around your house, be cognizant of the fact that water runoff and flooding may be a concern. Maintaining a proper supply of sandbags for when we get into the rainy season is very important.
Malibu is such a diverse environment. Does that present any unique challenges that you wouldn’t find anywhere else? It does. You have to be prepared for anything. There are calls that you’re going to see within this area that you’re just not going to see anywhere else in the department, primarily with the water rescues. You might need other resources, such as the Coast Guard to be ALEX ABDALLA has been a member of the L.A.
