As Spring is upon us, our children go back to school, and we focus our efforts on making 2018 a strong year, we must not forget to put our community at the forefront of our efforts. Celebrating and serving this wonderful community is at the heart of Malibu Magazine’s new rebranding. We don’t just want to cover Malibu and its residents but act as a resource, shining a light on those themes Malibu is truly interested in and providing an open forum for community members to voice their opinions. For our second issue we’ve worked hard to do just that, highlighting the people and topics we keep hearing about, and see trending. Whether you’ve lived in Malibu for 5 or 35 years, you’ve surely heard of our cover subject, real state star Chris Cortazzo. His infectious smile and personality have had an everlasting effect on the people of the Malibu community and Real Estate industry nationwide. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Chris to hear about his experiences in Real Estate, his childhood in Malibu and his relationship with his family. Vision Board Workshop Darlene Dubray

On Friday, February 9th, Malibu residents gathered on Bluffs Park to participate in a Vision Board workshop. The event was led by Makers Mess, an art studio located in Silver Lake that specializes in curating creative workshops and learning experiences. This particular workshop was based around the idea of visualizing goals for the New Year and helping ensure resolutions come to fruition. Guests of the event were invited to create vision boards to help generate artistic, big-picture representations of the key aspects of their lives, as well as goals and dreams they hope to make reality. With guided help, guests spent their time crafting blank poster boards with magazines, fabrics, colored-pencils, and more to make the vision board their own, diving deep into their ideal plans and visions for the coming months and years.

The Journey is the Destination Over 150 Malibuites were excited to enter the creative realm of Dan Eldon and his captivating stories Friday February 2nd at Malibu City Hall for the opening of â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Journey is the Destinationâ&#x20AC;?. Dan Eldon tragically lost his life at age 22 in Somalia but was survived through his journals bursting at the seams with rich stories portraying a worldly struggle. As a photojournalist, activist and artist, Eldon traveled around the world and observed famine, poverty and war-stricken countries while creating beautiful works of art. He was known for telling critical stories of those without a voice. The City Hall exhibition features his imaginative storytelling methods with the inclusion of twenty-five limited edition prints composed of multilayered, raw paintings, as well as journal entries and letters. The exhibition will be on display until until May 31.

Accidental Paleo Book Launch Eager foodies gathered at the beautiful Santa Monica home of LivingHomes Managing Director and CEO Steven Glenn on February 17 to celebrate the publication of Lauren Lobleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much-anticipated cookbook, The Accidental Paleo. Amy Shumer’s Malibu Wedding For their surprise wedding, comedian Amy Schumer and chef Chris Fischer chose a private seaside villa in Malibu, trading vows at sunset on February 13th. The small ceremony included only 80 guests, with stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Larry David and Jennifer Aniston in attendance. The wedding came as a bit of a surprise to Schumer fans, her relationship with Fischer only going public late last year. In a video of the ceremony Schumer posted on her Instagram, she explained in her vows the seemingly hurried nature of the wedding. “People are wondering why the rush?” she said. “It’s because I truly cannot wait another another second to be your wife.”

GABI FRANK

Advocating For Our Youth Gabi Frank was born and raised in LA but sought out Malibu for the peaceful beach scene, and soon found herself playing a larger role in building Malibu’s future generations than she could have ever imagined. Frank began her professional career as a commercial director at RadicalMedia, but the hustle and bustle of the job could not accommodate the time she hoped to devote to raising her two sons. After accepting an invitation to become the “room mom” for her son Auguste’s kindergarten class, she gradually found herself becoming more involved in her son’s education. Now, Frank serves as the Parent Teacher Association president, and has found a “sense of empowerment” in working to make a positive difference in the education of Malibu’s youth. Frank says, “the more you use your voice as a parent in the process of your child’s journey through school, the better it is for your kids.” When Frank is not working for the general youth of Malibu, she enjoys spending time with her own boys outdoors. “I’m a huge proponent of keeping the kids outside and off the phones. JOYCE STICKNEY

Minister and Mother to All Joyce Stickney has preached at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church for over a decade, but her open-hearted ministry reaches far beyond her Malibu parish. Growing up traveling through underdeveloped communities in Latin America, Stickney grew her compassionate, worldly perspective at an early age, leading her to ordainment at the young age of 28. For Stickney, family doesn’t end with blood relation. “Family is very fluid now, and creative. We’ve been a foster family for five years,” she says, “Church is my family too. Those lines often get blurred.” It is evident that the mother of seven extends her strong family love to her parish, whose members often knit each other prayer shawls, share meals together, and conduct community outreach. While the Malibu resident considers herself more of a nomad, always seeking change, she says she found her ‘fit’ preaching and caring for the community in Malibu. “Everywhere I go, you stop and talk to people, I love that. My whole life is interconnected. I’m going to try to be a minister to everyone, it doesn’t matter if you’re part of the church. That’s probably why I’m still here. Although Kalin Kilov has only lived in the U.S. for less than four years, he and his brother Boyan have quickly become beloved faces throughout Malibu. As co-owners of John’s Garden, the Bulgarian nationals have helped update the venerated cafe’s years-old menu, integrating a rotating weekly special entree, all while remaining true to the classic staples the community has loved for decades. “At some point, you’ve tried everything three times,” said Kalin. “That’s the idea of the weekly special. Even if you’re a customer for 35 years you still have something to surprise you.” Deep-seated loyalty to the heritage of the 43-year-old eatery has been at the core of the Kinov brothers’ takeover. Boyan worked at John’s Garden for years before he was offered the chance to buy out the restaurant from the founding Musante family in 2012. Kalin joined his brother a couple years later, leaving a management position at Coca Cola in Bulgaria to join both his brother and his parents, who had all immigrated to the U.S. years before. Sitting on the shaded patio outside John’s Garden on a characteristically beautiful day, Kalin gestures towards the idyllic country mart central plaza. “I love it,” he said. “This is such a great place to be.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves the Kinov brother for their commitment to both culinary innovation and deep seated traditions.

Inspiring Malibu’s Students Although Mark Demick has only been at Point Dume Elementary School for four years, the fun but focused principal has already made a lasting impact on the students, the school, and the Malibu community. Drawn to Malibu to be closer to his daughter, the father of two now works in one of the most esteemed school districts around, though that wasn’t always the case. With over 30 years of experience, Demick spent much of his career turning around low-performing schools in Washington State. His passion and drive comes from growing up with two parents who were also educators. “I like the family part of it,” he said. “My mom and dad were there at 3 o’clock when I got home because they were teachers.” Demick says his move to Malibu has exceeded expectations. From driving his golf cart to school to mountain biking, paddleboarding, learning to surf and Malibu’s strong community connection, Demick couldn’t be happier with his new home. “The Malibu community means, to me, support,” he said. “If I go to a play, baseball, soccer, the community is there to support the kids.” At Point Dume Elementary School, Demick plans on continuing to inspire each and every one of his students. “I’m most passionate about the students feeling important, included, that they’re capable of anything,” he said. One of the Biggest Hearts Equestrian, grandmother, and lover of people and animals alike, Big Heart Ranch owner Suzi Landolphi exemplifies the compassionate spirit of Malibu. Landolphi devotes much of her time utilizing her horses’ “big hearts” to provide healing to children and veterans. Big Heart Ranch began with just three retired race horses, a few goats, a couple of alpcas, and a pig, and has not stopped growing since. Her training process teaches clients to be gentle and trust themselves. “You have to think, feel, and act honestly or else the horse won’t trust you,” she says. The most challenging — and in return rewarding — aspect of her work is “waiting until ‘human beings who are valuable and deserve to make a wonderful life’ see their value in the eyes of the animal. Malibu’s Wildlife Advocate While Malibu is widely recognized for its pristine beaches, lush mountains, and deep blue Pacific waters, many fail to recognize the work required to maintain the health of this ecology. That is, unless you are Jennifer Brent, who accepts this caretaking necessity in her daily life. Brent is the Executive Director of the California Wildlife Center, which enables her to employ her passion for wildlife through advocacy and education. “It’s about educating people to be more thoughtful,” she says. “There isn’t a predictable day, and if I need a break, I’ll go downstairs and feed some baby squirrels.” Brent’s adoration for wildlife and ecology extends far beyond the workplace, taking her to places such as the plains of New Zealand and the depths of the Great Barrier Reef. Brent relishes her ability to work and educate in such a beautiful place. “The people who have been here a long time are very committed to the animals and the environment. You don’t live here unless you want to see the ocean and be in nature. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Jennifer Brent for her warm heart and her continued efforts to protect Malibu’s wildlife and to educate Malibu’s residents.

Altruistic World-Traveler If there was enough time, Alexandria Skouras, the owner of Pistol & Lucy, would travel everywhere. After owning her own boutique in Paris, Skouras grew tired of traveling back and forth so she decided to set up shop in Malibu, where she has now lived for 23 years. Her multi-brand boutique is full of unique items she has brought back from her adventures abroad. “Wherever I go I always seem to find something new,” said Skouras. “I can find beauty in everything.” One of Skouras’ favorite items in the store are washbags hand-crafted by fishermen in the village of Lamu, Kenya. Due to a travel ban in Lamu, Skouras said, “I know I’m helping a community with these bags and providing jobs for them.” This act of kindness extends to her own travels in Africa. Skouras is passionate about the children at New Hope orphanage in Africa. Her work there is part of the local March to the Top foundation where she has been involved for 10 years. This year, she taught the children how to knit and tell time on watches she brought for them. “Since I was a little girl I’ve always wanted to help others,” she said. “It’s just in my DNA.” MALIBU MAGAZINE loves Alexandria Skouras for her ability to find beauty in everything and her philanthropic involvement both abroad and in the community.

enerally, sane people don’t want to jump off ocean cliffs in Malibu. But when you’re attached to a paraglider and one of the best instructors around, the death-defying adrenaline rush suddenly seems like a lot more fun. With over 20,000 passengers flown over 29 years and a perfect track record to boast, Claude Fiset owns the only paragliding company in the city, Uptimal, taking beachgoers soaring high over Malibu. Initially geared for a career in mechanics, this engineer chose to pursue his dreams of flying high for a living. He was instantly hooked on the new sport of paragliding the first time he tried it. At the age of 24, the sport soon dominated his life while he lived in Canada. The same day as his first flight, he bought his own paraglider. Soon he was buying more, jumping from anywhere he could, flying down icy rivers at night and reading every paragliding magazine that he could get his hands on. He was

determined to learn the ins and outs of his new passion. “[My friend and I] both tried it. My friend never did it again, and I never could stop,” Fiset said. Fiset started his career working in his intended profession: engineering. For a few years, he worked at one of the largest firms in Quebec before discovering that the company was involved in numerous scams to cheat their clients. Having just discovered paragliding, Fiset was rapidly losing interest.“I would drive to work, and I would look at the flags and think it was the wind day to go flying. So I would take the next exit, turn around and go fly. I wouldn’t even show up for work,” Fiset said. “The work they had for me was not very interesting.” Today, he not only has tover ten thousand flights under his belt and owns

three businesses, but he has utilized his engineering experience to develop products for paragliding and the biomedical field. He is also an advanced skier, mountain biker and kayak instructor. In true entrepreneurial fashion, Fiset popped up paragliding schools and businesses wherever he could, first utilizing small mom-and-pop ski resorts as his primary locations. “It wasn’t ideal, but it worked,” Fiset said. Soon, he was offering paragliding flights and lessons at the largest ski resort in Quebec. As the sport became more and more popular, Fiset’s schedule was always booked with new perspective flyers. He kept his school open there for eight years before buying another paragliding school in Whistler, British Columbia where he spent five summers and two winters. The other three winters he spent on the Big Island of Hawaii. But no matter where he was, Fiset was hooked on the unbridled freedom paragliding offered him. “There’s nothing better than that, as far as freedom,” Fiset said. “You leave your problems on the ground, and you fly away.” After two winters on the Big Island, he realized Hawaii was not quite his financial or customer target. It was while still running his businesses in Canada and Hawaii that he took an RV trip to explore California for five months. That trip changed everything. “I took the RV down here, traveled all over the place, looked for the

best place to run this business,” Fiset said. From there, he made the game-changing decision to move his business to Southern California. “I figured there’s so much money and 10 million people right there, so I moved to the area,” Fiset said. He tried testing the winds in numerous cities up and down the coast before settling on Malibu. His paragliding business here has been up and running for 15 years now with Fiset spending about eight months out of the year in Southern California and the rest of his time in Costa Rica. Fiset takes off from high in the Malibu hills and lands directly on Carbon Beach.“Malibu is especially good because you’ve got the ocean breeze,” Fiset said. “The distance between the beach and the mountain top is two and a half miles, which is considerable. It is a good environment to generate all those good updrafts.” Denise Lynn, a customer of Uptimal, took high to the sky with Fiset for her unique perspective on the Malibu Coastline. “If you want to have an amazing experience in the beautiful city of Malibu, consider paragliding with Claude. His passion for the sport is obvious and makes the entire experience much more enjoyable,” Lynn said in an email interview. “Surrounded by amazing views of mountains, coastline, and ocean, the day just won’t get much better.” Ken Dixon, a fellow paraglider with four years of experience, calls Fiset a meticulous pilot who is continuously

Fiset said. “The motors are very high performance.” Paired with the great winds along the Malibu cliffs, Fiset can take off with a passenger with minimal effort. He continues updating his designs, using them for his business and selling to avid paragliders. OUR SPECIAL TIP

Dixon started flying in the same area and has assisted Fiset for three years, helping get people up and down the mountain safely. “He is one of the best pilots I’ve ever worked with,” Dixon said. “His knowledge level is very advanced.” On top of taking people soaring, he has utilized his engineering talents and knowledge of CAD (computer-aided design) programs since 2001 to make his very own fan and motor system for powered paragliding. Powered paragliding gives the flyer an extra push and more control in the air allowing Fiset to take off directly from the beach. When he looked into buying a powered paragliding fan for his business, none of the devices on the market met all of his needs. Dissatisfied with his options, he

set out to make his own with better fuel reserves and better body positioning in a compact travel-friendly size. His design features a unique two-motor system specifically for powered paragliding. The motor is so quiet, Fiset says, that people often hear the waves and the road traffic instead of him. The frame of the engine is designed to collapse on impact, making rough landings even safer. Heavy gasoline is also positioned closer to the body, making the same amount of fuel feel lighter. The fiberglass connecting robs are also easy to replace so that pilots can get back up in the air the same day they break. For the finishing touch, the entire system can be broken down and fit inside a 28-inch suitcase. “I think it is better engineered than all the other ones. It just feels right,”

At the end of the day, however, simply paragliding along the ocean still holds Fiset’s heart. The hills above Malibu Pier offer the most consistent wind for the best ride around. “A business like [paragliding] keeps you a little younger. You’ll see when you try it,” Fiset said. “For me, it was a life changer.” Fiset believes that he will never know everything about the sport of paragliding. Learning about developments day to day and year to year keeps him a constant student, something he very much enjoys. “It’s something you keep learning,” Fiset said. “There’s no point in anyone’s flying career where they think they know everything. or the last 30 years, Stephen Block, owner of Inner Gardens, has taken 4-5 trips around the world each year in search of rare and gorgeous garden antiques, visiting little-known markets and relying on a carefully cultivated network of international dealers. Jed took me out on the newly crafted Millennium Falcon, whose power and aesthetic are just as formidable as its namesake ship from Star Wars. The custom-made Defender 90 features a Kahn Wide Body kit, Masai panoramic windows, LED lighting throughout, and a full Safety Devices roll cage giving it a bold and adventurous appearance, not for the faint-hearted. The guts are equally impressive with a 6.2 liter, 430 hp Chevrolet LS3 engine, four-speed automatic transmission, Borla exhaust, along with 18” Boost/Kahn Alloy wheels, making the Millennium Falcon a true terrestrial force to be reckoned with. It was time for me to take the wheel. Excited and anxious, I opened the door and stretched up into the Millennium Falcon’s driver’s seat. I felt the soft black and white “Storm Trooper-esque” suede of the All-American Series Performance Seats and grasped the perforated leather Momo steering wheel. I felt humbled by the size of this iconic giant, yet omnipotent at my command of this mighty beast. I pushed down on the resilient carbon fiber pedals and was jolted by all 430 horses as we jumped into lightspeed alongside the vast Pacific. Originally built for off-roading and dirty work, this battle-tested machine has come a long way from its rugged roots. With the expertise of E.C.D., the Defender has become more than a weekend warrior - it doesn’t handle like your everyday driver and takes some getting used to when navigating the trenches, but that’s all part of the experience. Instead, you can drive into Eco Auto Spa located across the street from Nobu on PCH. “Rather than valeting at Nobu, come get a car wash,” said Jacob Zanki, the manager of Eco Auto Spa. Eco Auto Spa provides “green” car washes by using less water and eco-friendly products. All of the water is filtered at the shop and only four to five gallons are used to clean each vehicle as compared to the roughly 15 gallons of water your average car wash uses per car. “Back in ’09, there was only one car wash in Malibu,” said Zanki. “We felt we were a good fit for Malibu because we met their needs.” The shop originally used steam to clean the cars but the idea quickly dissolved. “It wasn’t doing the job that our customers expected,” said Zanki. “We also only used one gallon in the beginning but it

wasn’t cleaning the car enough. We’re always happy to accommodate and we love our clientele.” The establishment offers a list of services such as a 100% hand car wash, rim repair, waxing and buffing, rubber and plastic reconditioning, scratch removal, interior and exterior detail, off-site car audio, body work and more. “We’re ecologically friendly, we care about the environment, and we have an ocean view,” said Zanki. Customers can expect services to range from $15 to $1,400. “An outside wash with shine on the tires costs $15 while a complete deep cleaning of the vehicle with 10 to 12 coats of wax costs $1,400,” said Zanki. Eco Auto Spa is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. “Malibu is our life blood,” said Zanki. MM

alibu Cars and Coffee lets car and coffee enthusiasts alike get their fix of caffeine and some of the world’s finest automobiles every second and fourth Sunday of the month from 7-9 a.m. at Malibu Bluffs Park. The free event is hosted by the partnership between the City of Malibu and Exclusive Motorcars. “It’s kind of a junction between nature and the machine,” said Armando Petretti, the owner of Exclusive Motorcars and founder of the event. “You can be surrounded by beautiful nature and cars that are pieces of art.” The event started in October of 2014 after Petretti approached the city with the idea. “As a Malibu resident myself, I wanted to create an event to meet people who have the same passion for cars that I do in a beautiful and simple setting,” he said.

Bob Stallings, the Parks and Recreation Director in 2014, heard Petretti’s plan and helped him with the realization of the project, said Petretti. The cars range from vintage vehicles to Ferraris. “As long as you’re passionate about the car you’re driving, you can show it,” said Petretti. One of the most important sets of wheels is the coffee truck. “We do a lot of events and this is our favorite,” said Paul Blair, owner of Apollo’s Expresso and Shave Ice. “It’s an honor to provide a service to such a great community.” The family-owned business has served its organic and fair-trade coffee at every event. they wait for us.” Between surveying cars and sipping coffee, there’s something for everyone. “It gives you a good excuse to take your car out and go for a drive,” said PeMM tretti.

ABOUT AVIATOR NATION Deeply passionate and inspired by the 1970s aesthetic and its music, Paige Mycoskie began Aviator Nation in 2007, creating and selling just a few pieces inspired by her favorite era at a local street fair. SHADED TRAILS For the most part the 2 mile trail is shaded by eucalyptus and pine trees, making this a great hiking option even on the hottest of Malibu days.

RUSHING WATERFALLS During a wet winter, Newton & Zuma Canyon provide hikers with numerous waterfalls as well as swimming holes along the creek.

alibu isn’t the first place that comes in mind when thinking of waterfall hikes, but for a few precious months every year Newton and Zuma Canyon Falls come to life and offer some of the most picturesque waterfalls in the area. Parking at the Backbone Trailhead lot off Kanan-Dume Road allows you to venture into the Santa Monica Mountains and discover these unfrequented waterfalls tucked away into the canyon. Midday on a beautiful, blue-skied Friday, we were pleasantly surprised at the lack of crowds. Walking down the lushly vegetated Backbone Trail, you’ll be treated with the calming aroma of eucalyptus and towering pines that provide excellent shade on a hot day. One you leave the Backbone Trail, you will stumble upon the sheer cliff overlooking Newton Falls. Considering that we had an exceptionally dry winter, the falls were not rushing, but regardless, it was still mesmerizing to stand atop and watch the water spill off the edge. After this point, the trail at the base of the falls becomes more rugged. This portion remains unmaintained by the National Park Services so we rec-

ommend wearing long pants. Once you leave the Backbone Trail’s wooded area, you’ll be treated to a panoramic view of the Santa Monica Mountains full of rich vegetation, contrasted against vibrant layers of sandstone written in the canyon walls. At the base, you’ll find an outstanding shaded picnic location and beautiful waterfall. During the dry season, it is relatively easy to rock hop to the following falls. However, the wet season is when this area truly comes alive with refreshing swimming holes scattered along Newton Creek. During our excursion, lower Newton Canyon Falls were barely a dribble, so we continued on. This is where the trail can get somewhat slippery, fades out paralleling the creek and has poison oak present, but if you are feeling adventurous, you should absolutely take the rugged downstream path to Zuma Canyon Falls. Zuma Canyon Falls is by far the most picturesque, with surrounding caves to explore and a large piece of sandstone creating the ‘spout’ of the falls. While there are a myriad of waterfall hikes surrounding Malibu during the winter months, including the iconic Escondido Falls, battling crowds for parking and trail space can oftentimes become quite a challenge. The hike to Newton and Zuma Canyon

ABOUT THIS HIKE Distance: 2 miles (loop) Elevation change: 600 feet Hiking time: Approximately 1 hour Location: 1501 S Kanan Dume Rd, Malibu CA Open to: Hikers, dogs Fees & Permits: Free THE BASIC DIRECTIONS FOR THIS LOOP ARE: 1. Begin at the parking lot on Kanan Dume Road. 2. Head downhill through the heavily vegetated Backbone Trail for about .25 mile. 3. At the junction with the ‘Backbone Trail’ sign, take unmarked trail on the left. 4. Follow this trail about 0.1 mile until you encounter the water pouring over the sheer cliff of Newton Canyon Falls. 5. Peer over the falls and take in the surrounding lush scenery and trickling creek. 6. Backtrack onto the unmaintained trail and keep left. 7. On this portion of the trail

you will want to absorb the immensity of the peaks towering atop, as you traverse the narrow, ungroomed trail to the base of the falls. 8. Pause and admire the height of the falls you were just standing atop while grabbing some more pictures or having a snack. 9. Continue along the downstream route either rock-hopping or walking parallel to the creek about 600 feet. Be cautious of poison oak. 10. Take some pictures as you encounter Lower Newton Canyon Falls. 11. Keep right at the confluence of Newton Canyon and Zuma Canyon Creeks, maybe seeking out a swimming hole. 12. Follow Zuma Canyon Creek for about 5-10 minutes admiring the crystal-clear creek water leading you to Zuma Canyon Falls 13. Retrace your route to the parking lot.

As an avid hiker, and self-proclaimed ‘explorer’, Mathewson adores the amenities of hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains, “there are endless trails of opportunities,” he said, “many of those trails hold secret gems, like the waterfalls… But part of the fun is finding the unknown, plus, you can’t beat a hike that offers a cool ocean breeze in your face.” The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area contains more than 500 miles of recreational trails for hikers of any experience level, as well as runners, bikers and equestrians. For adventurous spirits both young and old we highly recommend hiking from the Kanan entrance of the Backbone Trail. Los Angeles takes wellness seriously, with a range of services and studios throughout the city from time-honored, traditional techniques like yoga and meditation, to more cutting-edge healing remedies like sound therapy. Indeed, so saturated is this city with treatments touted as mental-clarity cure-alls it can sometimes be overwhelming figuring out the right regimen for what you’re trying to acheieve. This is where Five Sense Collective, a new group which provides curated therapeutic healing events utilizing a wide range of techniques, comes in. Founded in 2017 by Dru Erin and

Kirscha Cramer, both certified yoga instructors with nearly 20 years in the wellness industry between them, Five Sense Collective has only been around for a few months, but it’s holistic approach to healing and health has quickly caught on. The Collective offers both in-home curated healing events as well as events throughout the Valley and Malibu, providing a wide variety of techniques and therapies such as yoga, acroyoga relational healing, meditation, kundalini, breathwork, nutrition services, aromatherapy, and more. “Our clients leave our events with a deeper sense of connectivity to all things as well as a new perspective on the way we care for ourselves, our homes, our community and our Earth,” said Cramer.

“We may view our lives through a softer, more compassionate lens, with which we can also apply to how we experience the world, and our work. You’ll likely walk away with a new friend, or opportunity.” Erin and Cramer, who originally met years ago while both working in the fashion industry, eventually reconnected after their professional paths had both brought them to the wellness industry. “We weren’t feeling like what we were getting what we needed, our souls weren’t satisfied,” said Erin. “Individually we kind of each found our own healing yoga path.” That shared passion for holistic healing and specialized treatments eventually lead them to found Five Sense Collective in October of last year. “We kind of found

It kind of magically appeared in our lives.” Armed with a well-curated rolodex of some of the top healing practitioners in the city, Erin and Cramer take an individualized, highly-curated approach towards planning all their events, which can range from one and half to four hours and for which all services are specifically tailored. Clients either come to them with specific events in mind, such as a girls’ night hosted for close friends, or an event for a wedding, or offer their homes for general healing events. “We curate events in accordance with the healing that’s

needed,” said Erin. Custom healings can be tailored to meet a range of themes and events. Recent themes from Five Sense Collective have included Couples Healings, Relational Recovery (heartbreak or separations), Memoriam, New-Home Blessing, Women’s Gathering, Moon Ceremony, Birthday Party, Spiritual Commitment Ceremony, girls night in or just a good time. Once Cramer and Erin have had a chance to discuss their clients concerns and goals, they cull from their database of healers to pick the perfect healing practices and practitioners. “Let’s say a woman is going through a divorce and wants to throw a girls’ night with her friends,” Cramer added. “We’d probably put together a group of very empowering

women to come in such as energy healers and yoga instructors. Everything would be based on opening the heart, allowing the heart to accept what’s going on presently, and accept what’s going to happen in the future.” Additionally, if people in the community want to offer their home but don’t have a specific event or mission in mind, Cramer and Erin can put together a more wide-ranging program. “[The event] will be according to something that’s happening cosmically, or environmentally, something that we find necessary,” said Erin. “If we feel a house has some type of positive energy then we will embrace that. Or if there’s a certain type of energy we want to clear out, then we could do a cleans-

he Morris family loves to say, “What comes around goes around.” Considering their history in Malibu and Paradise Cove, this saying could practically be a family motto. In the 1950s Bob Morris’ father, Papa Joe, bought 70 acres of land on Paradise Cove, when Malibu was still a sleepy beach community, just on the brink of stardom thanks to shows like Sea Hunt and Malibu Run, both of which were shot at the cove. “We’ve been around the beach forever,” said Morris, a third generation Californian. Customers can feel the same sense of nostalgia when they step inside the seaside café. Grainy black and white photo-

graphs of Malibu and the family adorn every inch of the walls. Prints of the Malibu Pier construction hang next to portraits of Papa Joe on a motorcycle. Morris has always felt passionate about collecting old photographs, doing so in most of the restaurants he has owned. Still, Paradise Cove is special. This place is more than a restaurant – it is a sandy time capsule for the Morris’ and Malibu community. “If you want to understand what Malibu’s all about, come to us,” said Morris. “The difference between us and another restaurant is people come [here] for the whole environment. We think we’re a niche in the community.” Bob and his brother Bryant grew up on the cove when it was still primarily a fishing destination, with hundreds of fishermen a day sitting on the pier or launching boats. Eventually Papa Joe sold the land, and Bob went on to build a formidable career in the restaurant industry, opening hotspots such as Gladstone’s Malibu, The Jetty, RJ’s the Rib Joint, the Malibu Sea Lion and Gladstone’s Universal, among others. When Bob and Kerry’s son Timothy was born in 1996, however, he decided it was high time to return to his coastal roots, and bought back the Paradise Cove land from the Kissel family, to whom his father had sold. In the beach café, Bob says he has infused everything he has learned during his long career in the service industry. “We’ve had lots of restaurants, one restaurant, no restaurants,” said Kerry

Morris. “We once owned six restaurants and our Friday night thing would be to go around to all of them.” Each of the family-owned establishments aim to be destination spots for locals and tourists, said Bob. “We’re trying to be the best we can be by ourselves,” he said. “Everything we know now, we’re trying to put all of those experiences together and have it as a California beach restaurant.” With 88 menu items at the café alone, Bob said he wanted to provide customers with quantity and quality. “Originally when I started, I wanted to serve four types of fish and have four types of booze in the back bar and that was it,” he said. “It built up to 88 now.” Many of the familystyle servings come from the Morris’ other restaurants. All of the barbeque dishes on the menu originated from RJ’s the Rib Joint, which Morris owned for 15 years. “There’s always a story behind everything we do,” he said. Other recipes are adaptations from dishes the Morris’ enjoyed at other favorite eateries. “We improve and improvise,” said Kerry. Paradise Cove’s top-selling clam chowder is a rendition of a chowder Bob ate at the famed, now-shuttered, Jimmy’s Harborside in Boston. “It was the best clam chowder I ever had,” said Bob. “I went back into the kitchen and gave the guy 100 bucks and I said, ‘I want that recipe.’” Bob returned home with the recipe but when he tried to duplicate it for the restaurant, it just wasn’t the same. “I got on a plane the next

week and went back again,” said Bob. “It turns out, I ordered what I thought was clam chowder but it was fish chowder. We’ve been making it that way now for 40 years and we sell thousands of gallons of it a year.” Traveling on a plane for a recipe isn’t out of the ordinary for the Morris’. A family trip to the Spanish/French border inspired the popular paella on his menu, made with traditional saffron rice and heaping with jumbo shrimp, clams, mussels and sausage. “Every restaurant that you walk by over there serves this big pan of paella,” said Bob. “I thought, ‘Damn, we’ve got to do that!’ So, we came home, put it on the menu and it went over crazy.” The Morris’ even offered others to travel by plane to obtain a recipe for the restaurant to serve. “We ate this grilled fish in a market in Barcelona,” said Bob. “We returned a few years later and the chef was still there. I said to him, ‘Tell you what, I’m going to fly you to California so you can show the guys how to make this.” The chef ended up being unable to make the trip to California, but that didn’t stop the Morris’. Instead, the family sent the vice president of the company to Barcelona to learn how to make the dish. “The statute of limitations doesn’t really exist for us,” said Kerry. “You have to get out of your environment to see what others are doing so you can figure out how to do it better or different in order to make the experience better.” Experience is paramour at Paradise Cove Beach Café. On any given afternoon, waiters snake through the wood-paneled dining room balancing colossal martini glasses overflowing with golden fried calamari or fresh shrimp cocktails heaping with red sauce. “Who’s going to do that at home?” said Kerry. “You want to get something that you can’t do yourself. That’s the treat of going out.” The waiters carry the glass like the Statue of Liberty’s torch while customers turn their heads. “People are much too serious about food,”

said Bob. “It’s supposed to be fun and what we’re trying do is keep it light. We want everyone to kick back and have a good time.” Items such as the Mile High Chocolate Cake, which weighs in at a whopping six pounds, have the same head-turning allure and impact as the calamari. “When the cake goes through the room people can’t help but look at it,” said Kerry.

The restaurant’s-family roots continue to this day. Bob’s son, Timothy, began as a trainee, worked on the line and in the kitchen, and is now in charge of the bar program. In fact, he started managing the bar before he was even legally allowed to drink. “I’ve been everywhere,” he said. “Coming in as the owner’s son, I don’t just get respect. I have to earn it,” said Timothy. “Working in the dish room, working on the line, it shows that I’m serious and I respect what they do, and in turn, they respect what I do.” Many of the staff members have worked for the family for upwards of 30 years. “We try to get rid of them but they don’t want to leave,” joked Bob. “We’re happy

Owner, Deep Sethi says he gives Horton free reign to get creative in designing the menu. “I tell him he should be fearless in what he wants to do,” Sethi said. “I will never question it.” His exotic dishes vary seasonally, with a consistent emphasis on wild game. For a unique experience, Horton recommends trying the Chef’s Tasting Menu which allows him the freedom to experiment with ingredients and techniques that are “a little bolder”. Not only are the dishes served at Saddle Peak exceptional, but their ingredient sourcing is specifically curated to meet their high standards. Thus, Saddle Peak’s delicacies are unique in their sourcing. Horton says he feels lucky to work as a chef at a restaurant that has “30-year relationships with [their] game purveyors”, making rare products easily accessible to Saddle Peak Lodge. Moreover, Horton explains that Saddle Peak has a ‘produce first’ philosophy, “We never look to build a ‘filet mignon dish,’” he says, “Instead we build a dish around the vegetables available to us, then decide filet would be a great addition to those ingredients.” Saddle Peak Lodge was acquired by Sethi in 2016, a veteran in the restaurant industry with 33 years of owning his own restaurants, including Bombay Palace and Nirvana in Beverly Hills. Like many others he was, “drawn to the history of the restaurant.” Since his takeover, he has worked to maintain the charm and history of Saddle Peak Lodge while making improvements such as the Double Barrel Room. Now, diners can make their way upstairs to the cozy, attic-like, whiskey bar hideaway, the Double Barrel Room after dinner. There you can enjoy a personalized experience with host Jeffery Baker, an expert in fine whiskey. This room bears a selection of hundreds of cherry-picked new, vintage and rare whiskeys. he Malibu Farmers market is considered one-of-akind, not only because of the beautiful location, but because it offers a large array of organic, unique foods that tantalize locals, celebs, beach goers and travelers from all over the world. The market is 75 percent organic and has a large selection of gluten-free, vegan

and body detox items such as charcoal lemonade, and unique seed milks such as pumpkin, sunflower seed, almond and coconut. Founder Debra Bianco is a second generation Italian New Yorker who grew up in the kitchen, surrounded by a love of food. She and her mother wandered street markets looking for the very best. “When we cooked, we cooked with love,” she said. The Malibu Farmer’s Market epitomizes this passion for food and the wonderful experiences it can engender, bringing together people from all walks of life. On any given Sunday you’ll find shoppers both young and old, families leisurely shopping together for fresh produce and flowers, as well as local Pepperdine students sampling the latest from Malibu Oil Essentials. The purpose behind opening the Malibu Farmer’s Market was to generate funds to donate to various environmental causes. “It is clear that given the current fires, smog, global warming that our environment is under attack and we need to increase our efforts to connect to the earth and educate others, especially our youth,” said Bianco. “The future of our planet is not by chance, but by choice.” This has been the mission of the parent non-profit of the Malibu Farmer’s Market, The Cornucopia Foundation. Since its inception in 1998,

the foundation has endeavored to develop programs to help both children and adults better understand the natural world. Various causes that the market and Foundation supports include: California Wildlife Center, Nature Bridge, St. Martins Animal Foundation, Western Alliance for Nature and Poison Free Malibu. Bianco reminds us, “When American Indians make a decision they think seven generations ahead, how it will affect the earth and the people. That is why I think the children are most important to give the tools to improve our environment.” The Cornucopia Foundation was the first in Southern California to get hands-on environmental education into the schools during school hours. This educated students in concepts such as bio-mimicry, bio-dynamics, perma-culture and bio-diversity. The most recent project is the installation of filtered purified water stations in all schools in Malibu. In addition, the Malibu Farmers Market and Cornucopia Foundation plan to provide stainless steel water bottles to the teachers of Malibu. Looking ahead, they want to encourage and educate students to be ecologically responsible for the future of their environment. Each bottle will have the logo #backtoearth to remind them of their connection to mother nature. Ongoing revenues earned from the Malibu Farmer’s Market continue to support projects like these as well as many other environmental causes. A RENOVATED URGENT CARE After 60 years, Malibu Urgent Care is undergoing its own treatment and care in the form of renovations. Among other improvements the renovated Urgent Care will provide handicap access and new exam tables. ✎ written by Caroline Laganas The Malibu Urgent Care Center recently announced its plans to renovate the 60-year-old building located on the corner of Webb Way and PCH. The renovations will begin in the latter part of February and last for approximately three months, said Helene Eisenberg, the president of the non-profit Friends of Malibu Urgent Care Center. Part of the improvements will include new flooring, cabinetry, ceilings and walls. There will also be new furniture such as waiting room furniture, beds and exam tables. “It’s not just cosmetics,” said Dr. Jill Furgurson, an ER physician at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura and Malibu Urgent Care doctor since 1994. “We’ve tried to identify things to enhance the patient experience.” Patients can expect an indoor and outdoor waiting area, enhanced privacy with a check-in alcove and an improved lab area. The renovations will incorporate a state-of-the-art x-ray machine, updated equipment and the use of electronic medical records. “This is a community I’m glad to serve and help,” said Frankle. “I get a lot of satisfaction out of taking care of my friends, neighbors and even people from out of town. It’s a privilege to practice here. For us, it’s a matter of providing good and quality service.” Despite the renovation costs, a patient’s amount per visit will hardly fluctuate, said Furgurson. “Insurance companies work with us to decide costs and they don’t care what we look like inside,” she said. For Pepperdine University senior Emily Sparks, Malibu Urgent Care is an affordable option. “I think if the Urgent Care takes your insurance plan, then I’d recommend anyone in Malibu use it,” said Sparks. HEALING THE HOMELESS For many people living on the streets, healthcare is hard to come by. In Malibu, Dr. Coley King is on a mission to help change that, providing weekly healthcare and housing assistance for the community’s burgeoning homeless population. ✎ written by Ramsey Abushahla

r. Coley King steps out of a grey minivan, his handlebar mustache freshly waxed and his neatly- kempt hair resting on his shoulders. It’s a Thursday afternoon, which means Dr. King’s team, which includes, Dr. Wes Ryan, a psychiatrist specializing in addiction, and Alex Gittinger, a social worker with The People Concern, is on its weekly outreach mission to provide healthcare and support for Malibu’s homeless population. While the team serves the Los Angeles area the rest of the week, a joint initiative from the Malibu Task Force for the Homeless, Venice Family Clinic, and The People Concern allows them to assist the Malibu area every Thursday. The minivan is specially equipped, with sterile plastic over the seats and plenty of food and medical supplies in the trunk. The rest of the team follows King out of the van at our rendez-

The team has a bigger solution in mind, hoping to eventually get all their patients housed. “If you’ve fallen out of society due to addiction or mental illness, and you lost your wallet, your paperwork, and your birth certificate, you’re nobody,” King says. “How do you recreate who you are and prove it to the local government so that they can get you legitimized and housed?” The team of four is often short-handed while tackling this difficult mission. Before the team was assembled, Dr. King began practicing street medicine with the Venice Family Clinic 10 years ago. After five years of solo work, the clinic was

t is not often one gets the opportunity to spend a long weekend on a hyper luxurious private Island in Hawaii, so when my husband and I did – we jumped at it. Five and a half hours after we flew out of LAX we landed in Honolulu and there our getaway of relaxation and adventure truly began. We were immediately whisked into the invitation-only Four Seasons airport lounge and offered ice-cold sparkling water and snacks to our hearts’ content. Another 20 minutes later aboard one of the smallest planes I’ve ever seen and we landed

in Lanai. As soon as we stepped foot in the grandiose resort lobby overlooking Hulapoe’ bay (which just happens to be one of the best snorkeling destinations in the world) we were greeted by friendly staff with a flower leie for me, a Kukui Nut lei for my husband and exotic cocktails for us both. Only a few hours into our trip and our paradise getaway was well under way. After Larry Ellison purchased 98% of Lanai back in 2012, the Four Seasons Lanai was completely re-invented and then in 2016 re-opened as the exclusive

While on Lanai, we made it our mission to try as many of the resort-curated activities as we could fit into our four-day stay. We started with the snorkel sail trip which took us off the coast of Lanai to crystalline blue waters, a gorgeous tropical reef and an abundance of colorful Hawaiian fish. After snorkeling we switched course and headed inland to try our hand at clay shooting and then archery. The next day was equally adventure filled, the guided UTV tour being the highlight of the day. It was truly an unforgettable, adrenaline pumping experience to go flying through Lanai’s unpaved mountain and valley roads at 50 mph. Next, we slowed down a bit and sat down with uncle Bully Davis,

in the resort lobby to learn how to make our own woven basket out of palm leaves, which still sits in our kitchen today as a reminder of our trip. My husband even got a quick eukele lesson. The rest of the trip we spent taking numerous yoga classes, from sunrise to sunset yoga and even one aerial yoga class, relaxing in the pool, trying our hand at tennis, watching the nightly tiki torch lighting ceremony and renting a Jeep to explore and go shopping in the quaint downtown Lanai as well as visit a shipwreck on the other side of the Island. While the abundant activities may have been my favorite part of our trip, the nine diverse dining options definitely came in at a close second. When we arrived on the island, we were pleasantly surprised that many of our Malibu favorites were there as well — complete with Hawaiian influences. We had a delicious poolside lunch at Malibu favorite _Malibu Farm, and then

extravagant, Hawaiian-style sushi at Nobu for dinner with local Lanai favorites such as venison sashimi. Breakfast was best served at One-Forty, complete with an almost endless breakfast buffet and stunning view of the sun rising over Hulapo’e Bay. For a less flashy, but equally delicious dining option we headed to the Sports Bar & Grill and enjoyed classic favorites with Hawaiian twists such as venison burgers and pizza and in the mornings Hawaiian Kona Roast Coffee. If you are looking for a truly one-of-a-kind Hawaiian experience, there is nothing like the Four Seasons Lanai. Unlike islands like Maui or Oahu, Lanai is still able to offer its guests a true island experience. “People are looking for that old Hawaii experience and that doesn’t exist anymore, but on Lanai, with only 30 miles of paved roads, no malls, shopping centers or traffic lights, visitors get a glimpse of that era” said McAlister. “Then add in the comforts of ‘home’ — luxurious accomodations and spa, Nobu Lanai, Malibu farm and activities and you have an unforgettable esMM cape”.

My family is the heart of who I am.” Upon returning to Malibu, Cortazzo worked various jobs, including as a lifeguard, a massage therapist and a model, before meeting the legendary fashion photographer Herb Ritts at a mutual friends’ Grayfox home in 1992, a chance encounter which would alter the course of his life. Cortazzo soon became Ritts’ assistant, and while working shoots, high-powered celebrity subjects often inquired with him what neighborhoods they should look at as they mulled Malibu real estate purchases. “They would say ‘Chris, you were born and raised in Malibu, where should we buy?’” he said. “I would say oh, you should buy here or there. I put two and two together and thought, I should go into real estate.” Cortazzo got his real estate license in 1994, and soon after acquired his first client, the actor Richard Gere. Only a few months later he sold Gere a Broad Beach home for $5 million, a big-time sale at the time, let alone a big-time first sale. “You can realize how monumental that was,” he said. “That set the course for my career. Then I listed my first home at $8 million the same year, and my career just took off.” Since then, Cortazzo has achieved a bevy of both local and national accolades as his sales record has skyrocketed. In 2000 he became the #1 agent in Malibu, and in 2009 the #1 Coldwell Banker agent

Even his vacation home, for those days when he needs a change from the Point Dume Bali estate, is in Malibu, a 30-acre ranch up Mulholland that he describes as “pure magic.” “I always say it’s really wonderful to have your vacation home within an hours’ drive, and that’s only 17 minutes door-to-door,” he said. “Suddenly I’m in a whole different environment. I call it the holy land. It’s the most beautiful property ever.” The Mulholland Dr. estate, a refurbished ranch home designed by Bullard as well, is a distinctly different style than his Point Dume home, featuring an African-inspired aesthetic and photographs shot in Africa, as well as items collected from some of Cortazzo’s frequent travels. “That’s my retreat,” he says. He pauses, surveying his spectacular light-filled Point Dume

have a new generation that is appreciating this beautiful spot.” And for older families that have called this special place home for years, he reminds of the incredible silver lining at the heart of all this change. “Yes, if you’re a schoolteacher it’s going to be very difficult to buy in Malibu [right now],” he says. “But if you have been established here and you can sell your home and make such an amazing amount of money to give yourself freedom in life, it’s wonderful. It’s a lottery ticket. he jaw-dropping Las Flores Beach home of Baywatch co-creator Gregory J. Bonann has hit the market. Diane Everett of Coldwell Banker Global Luxury and Marcus Beck of Sotheby’s International are listing the property for $8.9 million. The tropical, architectural home is truly one-of-a-kind and an entertainer’s dream, with a grotto-style entertaining area right on the beachfront featuring a spa area and sand-covered entertainment deck with built-in lounges, fire pit, outdoor grill and TV. The four-story home includes four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, a well-appointed kitchen, multiple decks throughout and a private rooftop deck affording unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean. Recently remodeled, the home features custom finishes enhancing the tropical theme, including driftwood ceilings with exposed beams, beach-shell cladding in the bathrooms, and a custom shell stone natural gas fireplace. The recent remodeling also outfitted the property with top-ofthe-line structural support and a new wastewater treatment center. Recent construction included new concrete caissons supporting a seawall, considered to be the most stable and secure type of construction in Malibu. A brand new computer-controlled onsite wastewater treatment system was also installed, boasting its own leach field and a 2,000 gallon capacity tank buried on-site.

The home also comes with a wonderful story. The owner Bonann was working as a lifeguard in Malibu when he helped rescue the child of a television executive, an encounter which eventually snagged him a pitch meeting at NBC, where he introduced the idea of Baywatch. Bonann would go on to an illustrious television career, producing 289 episode of the show and its spin-offs. Bonann originally lived on the 20900 PCH property while he was a lifeguard in the 1970s, when the home was nothing more than a modest beach shack. After his success in TV, Bonnan bought the property in 1999, renovating and transforming it into the dream Malibu beach house.

5 QUESTIONS FOR …

MAYOR OF MALIBU RICK MULLEN Malibu Magazine sits down with community leader, Rick Mullen, to get answers on the Malibu community and what his plans are while in office.

What does it mean to you to be a representative of the people of Malibu and what are your plans while in office? To me, being a representative of the people of Malibu is a great and humbling honor. While I am in office, my plans are to uphold the Vision and Mission Statements of Malibu.

Do you have any ideas for new programs to preserve cultural resources? Yes, I would like to enhance and encourage the continued great work of the Cultural Arts Commission to release the creative potential energy of the people of Malibu.

What makes Malibu Malibu? The natural beauty of the land and the ocean in conjunction with the beautiful weather. The fact that it is not as developed as other coastal cities is a legacy of the ownership of Rancho Malibu by the Rindge family. We should work toward maintaining as much open space and emphasis on the natural, as opposed to man-made, wonders of Malibu. We are very fortunate to live here and that such a place still exists.

What are your thoughts on the separation of Malibu and Santa Monica school districts? It is long overdue. Santa Monica won’t let us go for selfish reasons. We would not do to another town what they are doing to us. It is just wrong, period. I am confident that we will prevail, because we are on the right side of the argument and we have put the priorities of the students at the top.

As a leader in the Malibu community what was has been your biggest achievement and what has been your biggest challenge? As a leader in the Malibu community my biggest achievements have been two things. One, negotiating a settlement to solve the long-term problems in Paradise Cove when I was the President of the Paradise Cove Homeowners Association. Two, defeating the Coastal Commission and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy in State Court, along with the City of Malibu as the President of the Ramirez Canyon Preservation Fund. The basis of the case was local control for the City of Malibu. My biggest challenge has been maintaining the correct balance in juggling my professional life as a Fire Captain and City Council Member, with my personal life as a husband and father. So far, it has MM been working well.

RICK MULLEN has had a long career in civic service. He spent 30 years as a military helicopter pilot, has served as a Malibu Council member since 2016, is a Fire Captain, and as of this February, is serving a Malibu’s new Mayor.
