project notion Cheetham Hill is a small town located towards north from the Manchester City Centre which lies multi diversity of cultural and ethnic background. Cheetham, as a ward, has a population standing of 21,092 which holds the amount of 4.2% of the city of Manchester’s population. Cheetham Hill is noted to be an ethnically diverse area. Its Cheetham Hill Road was described by the Daily Mail as “Britain’s most diverse street” in 2013. We might have the thought or a perception that a diversed cultural background might hold a strong community. However, non was found at Cheetham Hill unfortunately. When walking through the Cheetham Hill Road, none of the people are actually interacting with each other and when being asked about community centres, non of them actually went. It’s a pity how there were a lot of activities being held at Abraham Moss Community Centre but none of the adults went to join the activity or even be present as to support the community’s effort. Fortunately, the outcome from the community event we conducted, Urban Living Lab, there were many outputs / issues being highlighted by the people of Cheetham Hill. A lady called Mary, whom is have a slight issue on youth roaming around freely as a disturbance. She had several doubts in going to places alone as she’s anxious about seeing youth in groups. She was hoping that if only there were a place of belonging for these youth at Cheetham Hill. This just drove me into finding way, activities and programmes that could be provided for these youth in being part of the community. Reached out to the youth at Cheetham Hill to tackle this issue and found out solutions that could be made by providing them potential programmes but importantly concurrent to the likings of the youth themselves. My way of findings to the King David’s School was a success as the youth were giving me wise yet fun strategies to be administered in their idea of their own youth zone. Meanwhile, with the current issues of having a lot of scraps, abandoned materials being thrown out on empty areas in Cheetham Hill, had brought me the idea of why not have these things being Re-use and make good of? It syncs with the ideology of second chances where the youth will be given a chance to make better of the community as well as the materials being given the chance to be re-use, re-cycle and re-make.
“ I BELIEVE IN SECOND CHANCES.”
THEORETICAL STATEMENT Skateboarding is a type of recreational sport which is about letting lose and be in a position where
you could roam free without no one stopping you. Almost 54% of youth in Cheetham Hill agreed on the idea of skateboarding and would spend their free time through skateboarding. This had create a medium of engagement between youth within a community as they could exchange their knowledge while being physically active together. Furthermore, youth deserves the right to have their own moment of play. Via Skateboarding, youth could take full advantage in expressing honest emotions through play and this would help in their social skills, health and well being.
“I ALWAYS LIKE TO GO HIGH ON THE RAMPS. WHEN I’M UP THERE I FEEL FREE, LIKE I’M FLYING. I LIKE THAT FEELING A LOT.“ HANIFA, 14, AFGHAN SKATER
By providing a special space for the youth, this will definitely provide them the sense of belonging in the community. Youth will feel more comfortable in having an open dialogue with adults by sharing their thoughts and ideas in making better of a neighbourhood. They would feel appreciated when something that they love is being considered and realized by the community itself. It’s a give and take process when being in a community. Skateboarding could simultaneously becomes a platform for youth empowerment and could also be the potential for change in Cheetham Hill.

site selection The site is located along Cheetham Hill Road and is adjacent to the King David’s School which takes full advantage in the easeness of gathering youth. The existing site was used as a parking space for the nearby retail area but it was not being used since 2010. This 2 hectar site is surrounded with residentials of multi diversed background families, nearby Tesco Store and a retirement home for the elderly. The site could also offer a potential gathering space which could be used by the neighbouring community because the nearest public space located is 4 kilometers away. Moreover, the public space doesn’t provide much facilities that could facilitate the neighbourhood of Cheetham Hill.

understanding youth Youth had been treated as the minority part of a community. Youth input in decision making, problem solving, action, and evaluation in communities has received limited attention. However, recent trends suggest that youth are playing an increasingly important role in the development of their communities (Brennan, Barnett, & Lesmeister, 2006).

understanding ARCHITECTURE AND SKATEBOARDING It’s a challenged when trying to create spaces that caters skateboarders needs as they would skate on anything. So all objects, all shapes and sizes matters. Skateboarders engage architecture with purist devotion, over optimizing ever nuance of the public realm. It’s flexibility allow the ability to create a spaces with multi function purposes. A ramp may proivde a space for storage purposes. Taking every inch of detail to consideration at the same time realizing that the design could be transformed into other functions unexpectedly.

vision Manchester’s Community Strategy states that “everyone plays a par in making their neighbourhood, and Manchester, a great place”. The strategy is a framework through which partners, businesses, voluntary and community organisations and individuals work together to achieve a vision for neighbourhoods in Manchester, based on resident priorities.
“ TO DEVELOP STRONG, EMPOWERED AND COHESIVE COMMUNITIES WHICH CAN BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER, INFLUENCE DECISION MAKING AND LEAD ON COMMUNITY ACTION.”

Identity
Youth act as the medium in bringing the community together but first they must create their own community which conquers the same interest in the same place with the same group of people. Youth have the right to be in the place of empowerment and show to others their capabilities. The idea of skateboarding could be expand in different ways which could help make better of the communities. The hope is for the people to enable the youth to play an active role in their communities through involving and devolving decision-making and supporting communities to lead on community action. They could learn, teach and give back to the community through solving issues that is currently going on in Cheetham Hill.

URBAN INTERVENTIONS : ART OR FORMATION THAT TYPICALLY RESPONDS TO THE SOCIAL COMMUNITY, LOCATIONAL IDENTITY, THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT, AND PUBLIC PLACES. MAKING THE YOUTH WRECKREATION TO BE MORE EXCITING, BUT ALSO TENSION-RIDDEN PLACES IN TOWN. IN THIS SPACES, PEOPLE WILL MEET, MINGLE, COMMUNICATE, AND INTERACT, WHETHER THEY INTEND TO OR NOT. design strategies Intervention = COMMUNITY AWARENESS GIVE & TAKE
WHEN BEING IN A COMMUNITY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO THINK AND ACT REGARDLESS BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE. IT IS A GIVE AND TAKE PROCESS WHERE THERE IS NO INDIVIDUAL OWNERSHIP ON ANYTHING AND PEOPLE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT COULD MAKE THE NEIGHBOURHOOD BETTER. THIS WAY OF THINKING WOULD PROMOTE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE FOR THE YOUTH AND COMMUNITY ITSELF.
recycle exchange refresh exchange cOPY ME! (HOLOGRAM) SENSORY SKATE
THE YOUTH WRECKREATION WOULDNT BE BUILT BY ITSELF IF IT’S NOT BY THE AGRREMENT OF A UNION. THEREFORE YOUTH NEED TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY HELPING OUT WHATS NEEDED. CLEANLINESS AND ELECTRICITY HAD BEEN ONE OF THE BIG ISSUES THATS BEEN HAPPENING AT CHEETHAM HILL FOR YEARS. BY PROVIDING STRATEGIES TO SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS, ITS A WAY OF GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY.
LIGHTING BOX WILL LIT UP WHEN AN AMOUNT OF WASTE BEING TRANSFER INSIDE THE RECYCLE BOX.
INDICATION BOX SHOWING AMOUNT OF ENERGY GAINED BASED ON AMOUNT OF BODY HEAT BEING GIVEN OUT BY SKATEBOARDERS.
RECYCLE XCHANGE! GIVE WASTE FOR LIGHTING YOUTH WILL GET EVERY CHANCE TO PLAY EVEN WHEN IT IS ALREADY NIGHT. BUT THEY NEED LIGHT IN ORDER TO PLAY. LIGHT CONSUMES ALOT OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY AND IT’S BEING LEFT TO WASTE EASILY BY THE PEOPLE. IT IS NOT A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT. THEREFORE, IN CREATING A MORE WASTELESS ENVIRONMENT, THE YOUTH HAVE TO COLLECT ALL THE WASTE ALONG THE WAY TO THE YOUTH WRECKREATION AND TRANSFER THEM TO THE RECYCLE BOX IN EXCHANGE FOR LIGHT. BY THIS, IT WILL CREATE A HEALTHIER YET ENVRIONMENTAL FRIENDLY APPROACH TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WHILE TRACHING YOUTH ABOUT GIVE-AND-TAKE SITUATIONS.
1 KG OF WASTE = 30 MINUTES OF LIGHTING
REFRESHED XCHANGE! GIVE BODY HEAT FOR WATER YOUTH ARE VIGOROUSLY ACTIVE IN SKATEBOARDING THAT THEY WILL GAIN A LOT OF BODY HEAT IN THEIR SYSTEM BUT THIS COULDN’T ALSO BE LEFT TO WASTE. BODY HEAT COULD BE TRANSFERED TO ENERGY THAT COULD BE USED FOR ELECTRICITY PURPOSES. WITH THE EXCHANGE, YOU WILL BE GIVEN A FREE WATER BOTTLE TO QUENCH THEMSELVES DURING PLAY.
