Arts and Crafts in Tamilnadu
The crafts of India have been valued throughout time; their existence today proves the efforts put into their preservation. Despite these efforts, the roots of these crafts, which are the rural craftsmen, are in decline. With rising economic and political issues in India, the craft sector is struggling to uphold. So to create a platform where all the craftsmen are brought under a single roof and give the common people the intention of maintaining the crafts and to develop a large scale crafts community in Tamil Nadu. The aim of the project is showcasing the traditional art and crafts simultaneously providing a suitable environment to look at local markets and re-invent it to fit the existing needs of the consumers and sellers. An Architecture that reflects the buildings function as the instrument to retain the culture of crafts

Introduction Local markets in India are one of the most authentic experiences. The sounds, crowds, materials, artisans and fine stories are combined in one place giving the feel of the country. It’s all about storytelling, where you actually feel being part of the action. There are different types of markets in india for street shopping.Few markets have existed for a long time, reflecting an aura of history in the atmosphere. These traditional markets reflect the culture of the place where it is located. These are not simple street markets, but ones which specialize as the traditional market of that place

Background Story
The Indian sculpture and artwork on metals is very ancient and is greatly inter-twined with the socio-religious-cultural life of the people. The art dates back by 5000 years to the Mohenjodaro and Harappan period, through the Vedic times and Sangam periods. The district is famous for various types of handicrafts, particularly the Thanjavur Art Plates, Swamimalai Bronze (Panchaloha) Icons, Bronze Chandeliers, Thanjavur Painting and Thanjavur Veena (a traditional classical musical instrument). The Thanjavur artisans cater to the demand for Thanjavur art plates, both for domestic consumption as well as for exports. However, depending on the geographic location and the marketing complexities, including logistics & procedural formalities involved, the products are sold directly by the artisans or through show rooms of handicraft organisations or through the merchant exporters (who act as middlemen, buying from the artisans and exporting the products).

Space
To provide a platform where the craftsman can generate opportunities to keep the cultural and economic values of the city intact. ‘Low Impact Construction’ serves to describe a body of work which takes in most of the more radical attempts to produce ‘deep green’ buildings with a quite different approach to construction and the creation of comfort.
Heritage
I Seek to enage with the urban and architectural histories that precede us to speak their common language ,but with contemporaray reflections. Fundamental concerns are Social interactions, User perception,Influence of light,Passive ventilation and Sensitive material selection. The Principal act performed by the building is to elevate a subtantial part of the crafts of the local culture. By doing so public square is created underneath it which mainly helps in uplifting the community.
To act as a center for local craftspeople with a place where they can share ideas, interact, teach, learn and sell their works directly to folks.

Crafts stalls is the focal point of the bazaar activity and to be organized based on the spatial adjenceny. The secondary spaces form a significant roll and acts as a interface spaces creating relationship
The Focus and the Linear axis enable the linear sequence along the path of the existing tree. The visual axis keeps the differnent activity in constant reference with the site.
The degree to which the spatial and visual continunity is maintained between an elevated space and its surroundings depends on the scale of the level changes.

Design Solution The solution is obtained by considering the site features. Existing trees played an important role in siting. To obtain the overall experience for the users to see all the shops, pathway is the principle element around which everything else is arranged. The pathways are developed around the existing trees, which naturally made the flow easier. The sandhai is the emphasis of the whole site, which is designated to be in the front. PEOPLE ATTRACTING PEOPLE, is the main idealogy behind this. Universal design, i.e. the whole site has level difference which is connected with each other by ramps, and the pathways are designed around the trees which provides a natural shade and gives the ‘Old-fashioned’ perception of a gathering space for people to sit and take rest. Performing area is designed to resemble the traditional ‘theru koothu’ where the stage is open or may be we can say that it is originally placed in a junction where people can be easily accomodated. The same is being applied here. To have a traditional market feel, the food stalls and refreshment areas are plugged inbetween the shops, to avoid clustering of people in a one single place.

Building materials and Construction
The building constructed in the exposed brick and stone, with shady veradah have been inspired by the vernacular architecture of the region. Earthy play of colour and texture and one can experience the warm intimate spaces designed to human scale as well as the grandeur. The space between the two roof is left open to enable the air to move between the roof spaces. Ventilation is also encourged within the presence exisiting site elements causing the microclimate. The degree to which the spatial and visual continunity is maintained between an elevated space and its surroundings depends on the scale of the level changes.

View from the main theru near sandpit The design of the project is kept very simple using a colouful jalli windows produced by a succession of individual shading structures. It provides the solar and thermal protection to the vending spaces underneath. Ultimately, the important goal of the project to create a space that triggers greater confidence and aspirations for the future in the users themselves by offering a dramatic upgrade for this public infrastructure. The market is organised around an ancestral tree, which has long been an important public space for the people on market day and for the children from the neighbouring school.

[ Water front Development ]
Finding Room for Water Sholliganallur is an established residential node based on the IT corridor towards the South of the Chennai. The aduent of information technology business parks and dedicated special economic zones (SEZ) in this region marked the rise of Sholliganallur as the next big financial and economic hub of chennai. Rapidly growing employment opportunities, good asset appreciation and a host of entertainment avenues make this locality a favourable residential destination as well. The proposal aims to provide a riverfront that offers variety in the nature of spaces, through the
creation of multiple destination This project explores urban design features through the lens of the TOD and aims to create a site specific model. The first half of this project focuses on a background study and provides the concise analysis of the issues to be addressed on the site. The second half provides design guidelines for the future development and solutions to the current issues. Situation shows the position of the site in relation to its surroundings. The advantages of site is its proximity to OMR, considering the future scope. As in this zone, the network of transportation and communication is very developed. The lakes around the site being exhausted remains one of the main advantage to create the neighbourood.

The vision behind this development proposal, is to create a thriving public space along the river, which can enhance the image of the city while simultaneously making it an essential part of the everyday lives of its residents. Succesful cities have been characterized by active public sectors along riverss, water bodies and its natural features. The revitalization of these spaces not only improves the quality of life but also acts as a stimulus for development of the surrounding area of the city.

The proposal aims to provide a riverfront that offers variety in the nature of spaces, through the creation of multiple destinations. These destinations will vary in scale, catering to the needs of the local residents and the tourists as well. These spaces owe their triumph to their tendency to be able to adapt to satisfy changing needs. The design involues the segregation of the riverfront into zones that will be unique in character while catering to all fragments of society. The design in the design help in making the spaces disable-friendly and technologically advanced.

[ Community school ]
Back to Basics The Challenge was to try and stick with a simple, non negotiable plan and inject value through detailing and design. The main focus has to use the building as a tool for learning. Light, colour, gathering spaces, greenery, sacle and most importantly, the kid, have made this government school what it is. Trellises and Cutout space play a big role in defining the nature of spaces across the design - from creating playful patterns and shadows of light and joy in the corridors, to providing much needed ventilation in the classrooms. There are bursts of colour on the windows and doors, the stimulating everyday portals. Despite the defined footprint, child friendly scale and spaces are explored through variations in the roof levels, creating a sense of expansion and contraction. Working within the design guidelines, rules and budget set for government schools, I’ve tried to push the boundaries of what can and cannot be negotiated from a design perspctive, to truly make the experience of the school environment a comfortable, enjoyable and stimulating one.

Kids learn through discovery and collabartion
Towards a Natural Education By Undoing the compartmentalization found in the traditional schools, Cut-outs and pockets are introduced at the regular interval by interweaving learning with playing spaces. The school environment becomes a third teacher that unleaches the superpower of each child. Teachers and Parents share the lobby with the children, where a playful felt nook sandpits to serve as a flexible work, meet and waiting area.

The learning landscape encourages collaboration by emphasizing transparent and communal spaces, which comprise more than half of the school. Primary classroom, Flexible workshops, Community spaces, Multipurpose studio, Art studio, Music room and other playscapes support the energy of creation and togetherness Most of the partitions inside the school are rised to the level of the child, allowing the natural light to deep inside the building. Voids or Balcony spaces are created at the regualr intervals between the classroom occasionally to create various activity spaces and give a feeling of comfort, safety and community, while allowing teachers to have full perspective of the spaces at all time. The posture of then building is very strectched. The generously and sentimentally opens to connect to the outside world. The environment permeates through the gap and forms an interactive relationship with the building.

Large entrance with sand pits on either sides, sustainable corner windows, striking balconies and staggered projections dominate the facade of the project. Excellent natural lighting and cross ventilation are elements in the design. The planning further places emphasis on indoor-outdoor connections, which is heightened by a large courtyard (assembly hall) that links all the spaces together in each unit. The project results in the total reinvigoration of a government school on a modest buget. The design is simple and smooth, bringing a wild narrative to the changes in different functional spaces. The nature-toned material blends subtly with the surrounding ecological environment; With an open mind the balcony or the gathering spaces is matched with the exterior facade design to create a dialogue with nature.

He said / She said Here the Client’s need was to get a modern house interior with a classy sleek finish. Also the furniture unit and the wardrobe unit has to be designed in accordance with both the child’s and mom’s comfort. Therefore the Kids room has to designed in such a way that respond to the activity of the 8 year old kid ,where it has its own indiviual SPACE for every activity that the child can easily access comfortably and safety The project was such a challenge as the clients themselves had different opinions and interests. To coloborate them and also by satisfying the kids needs, many options were made. Further more inputs, and changes were made and we came to an idea by analysing the kids needs. So instead of multiple units, the bed, the study table, the wardrobe were made into a single unit for their maintainance purpose and to achieve a minimalistic furnishing. The colour palette mood boards were made after designing the furnishing. Inorder to achieve a pleasent and a vibrant mood for the kid to be active, blue and yellow laminates were used.

[ Sidhpur Family House ]
Living Two Gather Sidhpur is a reclusive little town in north Gujarat with a reputation of religiosity that is mostly restricted within the bounds of the State. It’s claim that it is older than history itself are not mere exaggerations of a geriatric; and although it can’t substantiate this with any actual remains or ruins, it seeks recourse behind dozens of legends to keep this faith alive. Two entities in particular - quite expectedly both water bodies - have continued to keep the torch burning, Bindoo Sarovar and the Saraswati River. Modern day Sidhpuris may not be able to fully appreciate the difficult times and constant hardships of everyday life before electricity came in the mid-1950s and piped water supply and drainage network in the late seventies. A survivor of those times tends to look back with nostalgia and sentiment at memories of life inside a large, overpopulated, female dominated house and of the hierarchy of people on the outside.

Sidhpur Location
It is not uncommon to find an above-average house with gleaming woodwork, priceless artifacts, glittering glass and mirror work, frescoed ceilings, flowery motifs in plaster, ornamental marble panihaaras, delicate steel trellises, a combination of arabesque floor tiles and Persian carpets and a host of other details.

The difference is in the degree of decoration and style of finish. Many of the interiors are exotic and almost baroque. Those of an opulent home are indeed a visual treat. The all weather balconies of other cultures have been modified as Jharukhas Bohra ladies could watch outside.

SECTION AA’
Western classical architectural influence is easily evident in the steep triangular cable roof. Iconograpy on the front facade in lime paster is representative more of western rather than of Indian motifs. The columns and pilaaters uncannily resemble the 5 classical orders. Closer inspection reveals a completly different picture. 57 | Malini Murugavel

Typical Floor Plans The internal arrangement was much the same as during the earlier periods. With dimensions of all plots being more or less uniform, there was not much scope for providing any variety in the internal layouts. The space hierarchy, ranging from public to private, is spread out over five linear compartments. The disastrous practice of sharing common walls for load-bearing purposes was discontinued. Instead a new Framework system was adopted that created a greater scope for treating the interiors differently.

The internal walls, variously decorated in different homes became true indicators of the owner’s status.

The mohalla was also a stage for a small variety of animals. Goats would jostle with visitors and stoutly defend their space at entrance doors. When the kitchen waste was thrown out every morning, there would be a grand bedlam raised by dogs, crows, sparrows, pigeons, mynahs, and squirrels. Often a stray donkey would bulldoze his way through the party and, disappointed with the offerings, would ruffle it around. No such event was complete without a mighty swoop of the high-flying cheel (eagle).
