A MODEL OF A SIX-POUNDER FIELD G U N W I T H C A R R I A G E An interesting early 19th century model of a six-pounder field gun, the multi-stage bronze barrel with plain lifting handles and globular cascable, on an iron mounted walnut field carriage with iron axle and elevating screw, all on cambered spoked wheels; complete with two limbers en suite, the first bearing two munition chests and the second with one chest, the iron parts engraved with elaborate scrollwork. The six-pounder field gun was the standard light field artillery piece of the
Mexican war in 1847 and was used by both Unionist and Confederate armies during the American Civil War, requiring a crew of eight men. The development of mobile field artillery capable of rapid movement on the batdefield meant that for the first time indi\ idual field pieces became the responsibility of non-commissioned officers. Such guns required a crew of eight men and remained in service until the last decades of the nineteenth century Possibly American, circa 1850 Height: in / 22 cm Width: 11 '/2 in / 29 cm Length: 43'A in / 110.5 cm

needleworkers in England and Ireland. Isaac Spackman's contemporary, Samuel Dixon, completed a set of twelve formal flower pictures in 1748 that were advertised in April of that year in Faulkner's Dublin Journal', the article invited the 'Noble and Gentry' to purchase these pictures which were 'not only ornamental to Lady's Chambers but useful to paint and draw after or imitate in Shell or Needlework'. Interest quickly led to exotic birds with the publication between 1743 and 1751 of George Edwards' Natural History of Uncommon Birds. Most embossed gouache pictures of this period contained a single bird perched on a branch as opposed the grand scale of this piece.
T h e technique of basso relievo involves areas of a picture being embossed using a copper plate on the reverse and afterwards painted with gouache. Pictures of this kind were pardy intended as decoration and partly as models for amateur artists and 27
