$1,300 - $1,900 €1,100 - €1,700
Joseph Chinard (1756 -1813) was one of the greatest portraitists and sculptors of late 18th and early 19th century France. Born in Lyon, he received his first commission at the age of sixteen to sculpt a decorative façade on the city’s Hotel de Ville. He later travelled to Rome where he studied for three years under the influence of eminent neo-classicists such as Jacques-Louis David and Antonio Canova. Following his return to France Chinard’s career flourished as the country moved into Empire period, providing an abundance of Napoleonic patronage opportunities for both sculpture and portraits.
de Beauharnais and other members of the Imperial court. Chinard earned recognition as a master of French sculpture for his fidelity towards his subjects, and a talent for exquisite rendering of the human form; the present bust exhibits the characteristic softness of touch and delicate balance of proportion that is so familiar to his known works. Two similar pairs have been sold at Christies: The first on 6th April 1995: “Fine English Furniture”, Sale 5370, Lot 155: “A matched pair of William IV Mahogany Three-Tier HangingShelves attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, each with three-quarter galleried rectangular top above two further tiers, the ring-turned baluster
supports centred by ring-turned X-shaped struts, one with pencil inscription to the reverse: “east wall near piano” and with further inscription “near the fireplace”, the other with pencil inscription “east wall” and “east wall near oak door”, variations. Provenance: Supplied to the 2nd Earl Manvers, Thoresby Hall, Nottinghamshire. Thence by descent at Thoresby until sold, Sotheby’s house sale, 31 May - 2 June 1989, lot 307. There are several references to Lord Manvers in the Gillow archive for the period 1800-1840 but he seems also to have bought furniture from their London retailer. This prevents exact identification of purchases because objects sold in London appear in the Gillow archive by the
name of the retailer alone. The Manvers archive itself suggests large scale buying, totalling as much as £3,000. As many as forty pieces by Gillow were included in the Thoresby sale.” The second on 21st May 2009 “A West Country Tradition: Avon Antiques”. Sale 5969, lot 236 “A Set of Regency Ormolu-Mounted Rosewood Three-Tier Hanging Shelves, in the manner of John Mclean, Early 19th Century The upper tier with scrolled brackets and urn finials, above x-frame supports to the lower tiers, each shelf with pierced front gallery, on ball feet. These china-railed shelves have golden palmwrapped brass pillars tied by pateraed braces in the Pompeian tripod-altar fashion that was popularised by Thomas Hope in his guide “Household Furniture and Interior Decoration”, 1807.

$6,400 - $9,500 €5,600 - €8,300
A pair of Sèvres biscuit figure groups on giltbrass bases, known as La Curosite and La Loterie, based on engravings by Cochin of Boucher drawings, one incised B for the period in which Bachelier was head of the modeller’s
studio, the other F for the period in which Falconet was the head. This famous pair of biscuit groups were modelled at Sèvres in 1757 based on engravings by Cochin of Boucher drawings which the latter had supplied to the Beauvais tapestry manufactory. Louis XV was the first purchaser of groups of this model which were included in his gift to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. Madame de Pompadour’s inventory shows that she owned a pair and their enduring popularity is demonstrated by the fact that the First Consul (later the Emperor Napoleon) purchased a pair in Year XI (1800). Sèvres biscuit groups are rarely found on original or later 18th century bronze bases such as these. However, we can see from the inventory of Louis XVI’s apartments at Versailles that they were frequently displayed like this when new. WR 33

Scagliola is an imitation of marble and pietra dura made from a composition of selenite, glue and natural pigments. It is applied like paint to a wet gesso ground and fixed under heat and highly polished. A complex texture and numerous possibilities of rich colours was the result. The origin of the technique is Roman but was revived from the 16th century onwards as a less expensive option to marble and pietra dura pieces. It was mainly used for columns, pilasters and architectural features as well as for table tops.

A fine set of four Louis XVI painted fauteuils having rectangular shaped backs with domed top rail and carved palm finials on each corner, sabre arms with detailed acanthus leaf carving at each arm. Standing on turned tapering reeded fluted legs. Two chairs stamped Sené. Claude II Sené The youngest son of Claude I Sené and brother of the famous Jean-BaptisteClaude, he originally worked on the rue de Faubourg-Saint-Denis and became master of
his workshop in 1769, but unfortunately had to file bankruptcy in 1783. A year later he resumed his activity and set up his own studio on the rue de Cléry, close to that of his brother. It is likely he would have received a few orders of work from the Crown; however it seems that he worked mainly for private clients. The studio was forced to stop production with the start of the Revolution, but Claude II leaves behind him the legacy of great Louis XVI chairs; elegant, well designed and delicately carved. His most popular armchairs à la reine (with flat, shield shaped backs), appear to take their model from his elder brother Jean-Baptiste (examples of which can be seen in the musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris), although not being intended for the court, they are decorated with a more restrained simplicity. They also reflect designs created by a prominent carpenter of the time, Georges Jacob, who was frequently commissioned to create elegant sets of furniture for Queen Marie Antoinette’s apartments at Fontainebleau, Versailles and Saint-Cloud. It is often difficult to distinguish between the works of Claude II and his father, Claude I, who continued working until 1780. However, his father’s works are more characteristic of the early Louis XV style involving more elaborate rococo elements, whilst Claude II is more characteristic of the neo-classical Louis XVI style. Although there is no initial on the stamps of these particular chairs it is most likely the work of Claude II for his stamps were of a smaller script than Claude I.

100 An Oval Painted Occasional Table England circa 1790, of the Sheraton period, the centre of the top with a coloured engraving in the manner of George Morland, 90cm wide, 73cm high, 67cm deep £8,000 - £12,000
$12,700 - $19,100 €11,100 - €16,700
A charming and unusual Sheraton period, painted and parcel gilt oval occasional table, the centre of the top with a coloured engraving in the manner of George Morland, depicting a bucolic group including a lady in an enormous hat at the centre and a musician with a dog; the remainder of the top painted in ochre colouring and with oval bands heightened with gold beading, surrounded by a garland of flowers and delicate leaves and an outer, scalloped border of gilt hatchwork, raised on a triform base with splayed legs joined by a shaped platform with a large central rosette and a guilloche border, the legs ending in scroll toes with blocks.
The table may have been supplied as part of Lord George Germain’s modernisation of Drayton when he took over in 1769. Between 1771 and 1774 the dining room was completely remodelled, possibly under the supervision of Sir William Chambers. Chambers was also probably responsible for the redecoration of the Green Drawing Room in 1773. A London cabinet-maker and upholsterer named Chisholme (probably Thomas Chisholme of 7 Great Pulteney Street) supplied a set of painted seat furniture for this room in 1774.

During the refurbishment of Stourhead, Wiltshire at the beginning of the 19th century, chairs such as these where the framework is filled by caning, were referred to by Thomas Chippendale the younger (1749 - 1822) as hunting chairs. Also referred as such by Thomas Sheraton in his Cabinet Dictionary of 1803, in which it is noted that they “formed a temporary resting place for one that is fatigued as hunters generally are.” Other examples are sometimes furnished with a reading slide or foot rest. Claude II Sené (‘le Jeune’) was the youngest son of Claude I and brother of the famous Jean-Baptiste. He became a maître menuisier in 1743, worked in the Faubourg Saint Denis, declared himself insolvent in 1783 and by 1784 was re-established in the rue de Cléry. He worked for a number of private clients and also temporarily undertook commissions for the Garde-Meuble but these ceased with the Revolution. He left some beautiful examples of ‘Louis XVI’ chairs, typically well designed and exquisitely carved in the vein of the work of Jean-Baptiste. However, as these chairs were not royal commissions they tended to be simpler in their decoration.

These looking glasses are in remarkable original state with very little loss to the elaborate carved frames. The plates themselves were packed out behind by strips of bound wool to help prevent any movement between the fragile glass and the back supports. The distressing of the plates is due in part to the wool binding which possibly should have been removed when they were hung in the house in 1750.
Provenance: Llanharon House, Glamorgan, Wales. Llanharan House was built around 1750 by Rees Powell and later occupied by Richard Jenkins and the Blandy-Jenkins family. Jackson and Graham were amongst the most prestigious nineteenth century cabinet makers with extensive premises in Tottenham Court Road. They carried out numerous Royal and noble commissions and won prizes in international exhibitions. One of their largest pieces is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The architect/designer Owen Jones worked closely with the firm creating some of their most innovative forms and designing their shop. The high quality of their marquetry work both singles them out and is the reason why they weren’t more prolific, hence the rarity of their work and its subsequent collectability.

Clive Edwards in his article describes this famous firm, Jackson and Graham, for the Furniture History Society thus: ‘In the pantheon of Victorian furnishing enterprises, few names are more important than Jackson & Graham’. Charlotte Gere and Michael Whiteway describe Jackson and Graham in their work ‘Nineteenth Century Design’ as ‘probably the most Important High Victorian Cabinet-making firm’.
With academe clamouring to lavish praise of such high degree on this company’s head, why is it that almost no one has heard of them? The truth is that the endeavours of the nineteenth century cabinetmakers are still undervalued. The advent of the mechanical age and the lush overelaboration of the epoch combine to seemingly render the whole Victorian era second rate. The mistake this idea represents is only now coming to light. Indeed Jackson & Graham celebrated this same mechanisation. They delighted in the fact that their machines afforded them the opportunity to execute a sophistication of marquetry that mere hand work could never have been achieved. It is true that Jackson and Graham were elaborate in their confections, but the sophistication therein contained rendered their work superior to all but a few. The firm was active between 1836 and 1885. They had premises in Oxford Street, which gradually expanded until they controlled six buildings on the same street. They were great exhibitors at fairs and like other cabinet makers of the age, they employed fashionable designers and architects to enhance their work. Amongst these, Jackson and Graham employed Dr Christopher Dresser and Bruce Talbert. However, the longest and closest affiliate was Owen Jones. He was central to the work carried out for Alfred Morrison at 16 Carlton House Terrace and Fonthill, Wiltshire. Pieces made for Morrison were shown at exhibitions around Europe and Owen Jones’ style defines the Jackson and Graham look. The firm gradually moved into decline through a mixture of internal strife and external trading conditions, finally, being bought out by their rivals, Collinson & Lock in 1885.

A Mahogany Console France circa 1815, attributed to Charles-Joseph Lemarchand (1758-1826), the upper shelf supported by two winged terms with finely detailed female heads and ebonised Pompeian neo-classical motifs beneath, each leg ending in a lion’s paw foot, the finely grained mahogany has many contrasting ebonised details reflected in the antique mirror plate behind, 76cm wide, 94cm high £4,000 - £6,000
$6,400 - $9,500 €5,600 - €8,300
The Lemarchand dynasty is one of the greatest in French furniture history. Its fame rests on the oeuvre of two men; the father CharlesJoseph, and his son Louis-Edouard. Their business flourished for over 60 years between 1791 and 1852 but their apotheosis came when Louis-Edouard was commissioned to provide Napoleon’s tomb for Les Invalides. Charles-Joseph Lemarchand was born in Dieppe in 1759 the son of the postmaster. He had one brother and three sisters one of which married the ebeniste P. Roussel. The next mention of Charles is in 1789 when he became a maitre on the eve of the Revolution. Perhaps he served his apprenticeship with Roussel, unfortunately history does not relate. His
business flourished and substantial wealth was recorded at the time of his marriage. He had two sons emil and Louis-Edouard who joined his fathers business in 1815. His supply of pieces to the various Gardemeuble of the period was fitful. He received regular commissions before the revolution and managed to survive both the Revolution and the Terror but during the Empire he was ignored, though things improved after the restoration and he became a patented supplier. Despite the vicissitudes of Garde-meuble commissioning his business seems to have enjoyed a stability of success so seldom found with ebenistes of the period. He appears to have never gone bankrupt which is almost unheard of. He was clearly as good a business man as he was a cabinetmaker and one of his ploys has come down to us. He liked on occasion to give the impression that he was going to retire and he offered his entire stock or substantial parts of it to various clients and discounted prices. He did finally retire and cede his business to his son shortly before his death, which was in 1826 at the good age for the time of 66. Louis-Edouard Lemarchand was born in 1795 and was sent off at the age of 15 to study architecture. This was seen as a useful tool for furniture construction techniques. However he was enticed by the
military life and he deserted his studies to sign up for the military academy of Saint Cyr in 1813. He left in order to fight in the battle of Ligny where he did well and was decorated on the battlefield itself. Incidentally he did not actually receive his medal until the reign of Louis-Philippe. Following Waterloo he was released from the army with the rank of sub-lieutenant of the 29th light. He joined the family business having experienced much and as an ardent supporter of Napoleon at the tender age of 20. Despite his youth he immediately played an active role and soon his father ceded complete control to him, indeed it is from this period that the workshops achieved their greatest output. He managed to negotiate for Lemarchand to be patented suppliers to the Restoration Garde-meuble. He supplied the kings Charles x and Louis-Philippe. In 1830 he obtained the title of official ebeniste to the duc de d’Orleans. He passed the business on as a successful going concern in 1852 but lived in good health until 1872. The Lemarchand stamp was used throughout the period of both father and son and was acknowledged as an sign of quality and finesse. Though not renowned for innovation they were famous for the use of exotic woods and the confident application of contemporary style. The reputation rests on fine carving, good design and outstanding cabinetmaking. WR 161

$6,400 - $9,500 €5,600 - €8,300
This magnificent mirror is a remarkable example of the high standards of carving and design that were produced in Germany during the first quarter of the eighteenth century. The culmination of the Thirty Years War (1618 - 48) had brought about a new social order that strengthened the wealth and fortunes of the German aristocracy, encouraging a more sophisticated approach to the planning of their homes. After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, highly skilled Huguenot Parisian designers and craftsmen were forced into exile, an act that led to the immediate dissemination of French taste and style throughout Northern Europe. In the decorative arts, there has always been a strong national diversity and within each European State existed a wealth of regional variety. In Southern Germany, there is an undeniable link with Italy. Designers in Northern Germany were influenced by those of neighbouring countries, France and Holland. Northern designers took a particular interest in the application of textile designs in their carving, looking to the work of exiled Parisian designers such as Daniel Marot (1663-1752) for inspiration. The combination of plumes with lambrequins in the canopy of this mirror closely resembles the form of an early eighteenth century bed valance, examples of which can be seen in Marot’s designs for chairs, stools and pelmets (circa 1690 - 1702).

$9,500 - $12,700 €8,300 - €11,100
These magnificent vases are representative of the flourishing of the Berlin Porcelain Manufactory in the reign of Friedrich Wilhem III during the post-Napoleonic era. At this time there was a great programme of civic and private building in both Potsdam and Berlin and the output of the porcelain factory celebrated this era with views of the palaces and other great landmarks of both cities. Classical urn forms proliferated but what makes these particular vases so unusual is that, instead of the topographical views, the decorated panels depict small scenes in imitation of the Italian revival of Roman micro-mosaics, a further reflection of the Antique. The mosaics are charming pictures of swans on a river and three doves perched around a casket on one vase and a hound seated by a pedestal supporting a burner, with an anchor and an urn of flowers on the other, all in minute detail.

The initiators of the Neo-Liberty style were the Turin architects Roberto Gabetti (born 1925) and Aimaro d’Isola (born 1928), who were both pupils of Carlo Mollino at the Politecnico, Turin. In 1957, the architectural journal Casabella Continuita, edited by Ernesto Nathan Rogers and Vittorio Gregotti, published a number of works by Gabetti and d’Isola, including the influential Borsa Valori (1953) and Bottega d’Erasmo residential block (1953-1956), both in Turin. The ideas expressed by Gabetti and d’Isola were part of a general move away from the purist principles of the Modern Movement at that time, and, like many other architects, they continued to develop new approaches in their architecture in the 1960’s and after.

A George IV lacquered brass four-poster bed, the four reeded posts cast with inverted lotus leaves, surmounted by similarly-cast finials and resting on large, spoked castors. Provenance: From the property of the late Lord Elliott. Broughton Place, Peebleshire, Scotland. Born Walter Archibald Elliott in London on the 6th of September 1922, he was brought up between a house on London’s Cheyne Walk and Broughton Place in Peebleshire - a Scottish baronial estate set amidst grouse moors, built by the architect Sir Basil Spence (1907 - 1976). After serving in the Second World War he returned to Scotland to study law, and was subsequently appointed QC in 1963. He also served as President of the Lands Tribunal for Scotland from 1971 to 1992. Re-upholstered throughout in Persian red and pale lemon coloured silk. The use of bold inverted lotus leaves as sculptural decoration to each of the four posts are distinct features of furnishings from this period and in particular the designs of George Bullock (1782/3 - 1818) Bullock was one of the most important furniture makers involved in the re-flowering of Greek and Roman taste in the early nineteenth century.

He moved from Liverpool to 4 Tenterden St. Hanover Square, London in 1812, where he had an established business as a sculptor, modeller and cabinet-maker. His patrons included Sir Walter Scott for Abbotsford in the Scottish borders, Matthew Boulton at Great Tew Park, Oxfordshire and the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte’s house on the island of St Helena. The impressive height of this grand example indicates that it was commissioned to take advantage of the full height of the intended bedroom’s ceiling space. The four poster’s long history in England had made it an ideal furnishing item for the display of lavish bed hangings, that provided a spectacle for the room and very necessary protection against draughts. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, various alternatives on the theme became more popular, for example the tent or field bed, the campaign bed and the French style, that involved curtains draped from a fixed pole above the bed or rich hangings from a domed tester. A considerable change in construction took place from the 1820’s with the use of cast iron and polished brass as the favoured materials, replacing carved or painted posts. Literature: H. B. and Sons, Sudley Gallery, 1988. George Bullock. John Murray Publishers.

$95,400 - $127,200 €83,400 - €41,700
Giles Grendey (1693-1780) completed his apprenticeship and became a freeman in 1716; by 1726 he had his own apprentices and was recognised as the most accomplished English cabinetmaker incorporating ‘japanned’ decoration. In 1731, it was recorded that Grendey’s workshop had a fire which destroyed ‘furniture to the value of £1,000 pack’d for Exportation against the next morning’. Fortunately, premises and stock were both insured, but this record underlines the importance of the export market for his business; notably in Spain, in Italy (for the King of Naples) and in Portugal. Grendey’s most celebrated export order was for a suite of approximately eighty items of scarlet japanned furniture for the Duke of Infantado’s castle at Lazcano, near San Sebastian in Northern Spain, circa 1740. A large number of items from this suite have been sold through Mallett and are now in several important international collections including The Metropolitan Museum, New York and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Grendey’s label does not occur on every item but the entire ensemble can confidently be ascribed to his workshop. A sufficiently large body of furniture has been identified, with and without trade labels, to encourage attribution of this bureau bookcase to Grendey on the grounds of stylistic analogy. Grendey’s furniture is typically fitted with doors having shaped mirror plates or shaped panels of exceptional mahogany veneers. The generous proportions, architectural pediment, elaborate brass handles and bracket feet may also be related. Grendey’s interpretation and technical rendering of chinoserie motifs further supports the attribution with a caravan of camels and figures within an architectural setting on the fall front, the fantastical animals on the lower section and the elegant large-scale figures on the inside of the upper doors and to the sides.

Sinumbra lamps, literally lamps giving light without shadow, became an important technological innovation in lighting during the period of the Classical Revival. With its light source set at the centre of the circular tank, the illumination that fell on the table surface was without shadow. Many forms of table lamps and hanging lamps were produced, and the light was modulated by the use of half-dome and pyriform shades that were variously clear and frosted and wheel cut with a wide variety of designs.

Nancy Astor was born Nancy Witcher Langhorne on May 19th, 1879 in Danville, Virginia. Lady Astor’s parliamentary career was the most public stage of her life, where she was an object of both love and hatred, her presence almost immediately gained attention both as a woman and someone who did not follow the rules. Winston Churchill told her ‘A woman being in parliament was like one intruding on him in the bathroom’ to which she retorted ‘You’re not handsome enough to have such fears’.
This was one in a series of repartee between the two, such as Lady Astor to Churchill ‘If you were my husband I would put Arsenic in your coffee, Churchill’, ‘Madam, if I were your husband, I would drink it’. After 1956 she became increasingly isolated and alone. Nancy Astor died in 1964 at her daughter’s home at Grinsthorpe in Lincolnshire. WR 306

Edward Holmes Baldock was a furniture dealer and restorer known to operate from premises in Hanway Street, London from 1805. His business and specialisation steadily expanded and in 1821 he was described in the Post Office Directories as an ‘antique furniture and ornamental china dealer’, this entry was redefined in 1826 to ‘buying, selling, exchanging and valuing China, Cabinets, Screens, Bronzes etc’. In addition to restoring existing furniture,

he also produced designs for new pieces and had them made to his specifications. One of his commissions was to produce designs for a suite of bedroom furniture in 1841 for the Duke of Buccleuch. A design for a table in the Buccleuch papers is annotated, ‘No. 3 Amboyna wood ground with coloured flowers’ which is almost certainly the preliminary sketch for a table which was made later. He is known for a number of well-constructed, and in certain cases, finely inlaid pieces of furniture marked with his initials, ‘EHB’. Some of these pieces were pastiches of 18th century French furniture and others are executed in contemporary English style. Baldock’s bills survive in many important archives including the Windsor Royal Archives, George IV’s papers 1827-28, the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury’s private archives and the Duke of Northumberland’s private archives amongst many others.

George Bullock (1782/83-1818) was a renowned sculptor, cabinet-maker and entrepreneur. Although forgotten for many years, he was recognised as the foremost exponent of the Regency style popularised by Thomas Hope. After a successful career as a sculptor and furniture designer in Liverpool, he moved to London in 1814 and established his furniture workshop at 4, Tenterden Street, Hanover Square. His highly original designs, drawing on contemporary Greek Revival and Empire styles, many of which were published in Ackerman’s ‘Repository of Arts’, attracted such distinguished patrons as Sir Walter Scott and Matthew R. Boulton. His most famous commission came in 1815 when the British government ordered a suite of furnishings for the exiled Emperor Napoleon on St. Helena. Following his death the artist Benjamin Haydon commented, “George Bullock was one of those extraordinary beings who receive great good fortune and are never benefited by it, and suffer great evils, and are never ruined, always afloat

but never in harbour” and two years after his death Richard Brown wrote in ‘The Rudiments of drawing Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture’ that, “The late Mr Bullock was the only person who ventured into a new path....There was great novelty without absurdity, as well as a happy relief in his ornaments.” It is now part of furniture legend that this preeminent cabinet-maker was soon forgotten and it was not until the auction of the Boulton house, Great Tew Park in 1987 that his reputation was revived. The following year Blairman held an exhibition of his work and published a catalogue featuring appraisals of Bullock’s work by Clive Wainwright and Lucy Wood. His reputation was restored. The Tew Park furniture is particularly useful for Bullock studies as the original bills survive and signature techniques and styles can be observed en masse. In particular the strength of the overall design is typical of Bullock’s architectural rather than a pure furniture approach.

He was established as an ébéniste in 1812 and won great acclaim at the Paris Expositions of 1819 and 1823 for his innovative use of combining rare woods with intricate marquetry. He also frequently
embellished his pieces with beautifully executed gilt bronze mounts, particularly anthemion motif which typified the period. Werner enjoyed considerable success, earning the patronage of the Bonaparte family, the Duchesse de Berry and the King of Bavaria among other notable patrons; examples of his work can be seen at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Grand Trianon at Versailles.

After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, highly skilled Huguenot Parisian designers and craftsmen were forced

into exile, an act that led to the immediate dissemination of French taste and style throughout Northern Europe. The combination of plumes with detailed architectural scrollwork in the canopy of this mirror closely resembles the decorative forms which can be seen in Marot’s designs for chairs, stools and pelmets during the reign of Louis XIV.

WR 375 δ Muller (1910-1985) A set of six Danish original illustrations Watercolour Several signed and inscribed Various sizes £2,000 - £3,000
$3,200 - $4,800 €2,800 - €4,200
Jørgen Müller (1910-1985) was Denmark’s first professional animator. His career began in England where from 1935 to 1937 he worked as an animator for Anglia Films. It was during this time that he first adopted the name Jorgen Myller, to which he would return periodically throughout his career. In 1938 he went back to Denmark and began making commercials for a large publishing company called Gutenberghus (later media giant Egmont), which also produced a number of magazines. These included “Hjemmet” (The Home), an extremely popular lifestyle magazine that was circulated throughout Scandinavia and is still in print today. From the 1950´s through to the 1970’s, Müller was employed as an illustrator for Hjemmet, initially illustrating articles and serialized novels and later the front pages. For one of his earliest covers, Müller was asked to create a scene filled with a large group of children at play. This “swarm” cover as it was known became such a success that Müller’s work would decorate Hjemmet’s cover for years

to come, his drawings henceforth being referred to as “Myller-tegninger” or “Myllerier” (Müller drawings or Swarm drawings). This collection of watercolours is very much a product of the Hjemmet-Myllerier period. Müller was a highly accomplished and technically adept artist. Like many illustrators he found his stylistic inspiration in the contemporary media and photography and as such, his work is steeped in the style of the era during which it was created. His characters clearly draw inspiration from the great screen icons of the 1950’s, though frequently owe something to his lovely wife Edel. Müller’s legacy to the world of animation was, even during his lifetime, to be significant. The success of his Swarm drawings saw Gutenberghus expand successfully into the world of animation and work in close cooperation with Disney, while one of his pupils Børge Ring would go on to win an Oscar at the Academy Awards in 1984 for his animated film Anna & Bella.

These Conditions of Sale and Business constitute the contract between Dreweatts and Bloomsbury Auctions (the “Auctioneer”) and the seller, on the one hand, and the buyer on the other. By bidding at the auction, you agree to be bound by these terms. INFORMATION FOR BUYERS 1.
Introduction. The following informative notes are intended to assist Buyers, particularly those inexperienced or new to our salerooms. All sales are conducted on our printed Conditions of Sale which are readily available for inspection and normally accompany catalogues. Our staff will be happy to help you if there is anything you do not fully understand.
2. Agency. As auctioneers we usually contract as agents for the seller whose identity, for reasons of confidentiality, is not normally disclosed. Accordingly if you buy your primary contract is with the seller. 3.
Estimates. Estimates are designed to help buyers gauge what sort of sum might be involved for the purchase of a particular lot. The lower estimate may represent the reserve price and certainly will not be below it. Estimates do not include the Buyer’s Premium or VAT (where chargeable). Estimates are prepared some time before the sale and may be altered by announcement before the sale. They are in no sense definitive.
4.
Buyer’s Premium. The Buyer agrees to pay a buyer’s premium on the hammer price of each lot purchased. The buyer’s premium is charged per lot at 24% of the hammer price (28.8% including VAT) up to and including £150,000, 18% (21.6% including VAT) of the hammer price from £150,001 up to and including £1,000,000, and 12% of the hammer price (14.4% including VAT) in excess of £1,000,001. VAT at the prevailing rate of 20% is added to all of these premiums and additional charges as defined below.
5.
VAT. (*) indicates that VAT is payable by the purchaser at the standard rate (presently 20%) on the hammer price as well as being an element in the buyer’s premium. This imposition of VAT is likely to be because the seller is registered for VAT within the European Union and is not operating the Dealers Margin Scheme or because VAT is due at 20% on importation into the UK. The double symbol (**) indicates that the lot has been imported from outside the European Union and the present position is that these lots are liable to a reduced rate of VAT (5%) on the gross lot price (i.e. both the hammer price and the buyer’s premium). Lots which appear without either of the above symbols indicate that no VAT is payable on the hammer price. This is because such lots are sold using the Auctioneers’ Margin Scheme and it should be noted that the VAT included within the Premium is not recoverable as input tax.
6.
Descriptions and Conditions. Condition reports are provided on our website or upon request. The absence of a report does not imply that a lot is without imperfections. The detail in a report will reflect the estimated value of the lot, and large numbers of such requests received shortly before the sale may not receive a response to all lots. Members of staff are not trained restorers or conservators and, particularly for higher value lots, you should obtain an opinion from such a professional. We recommend that you always view a lot in person.
We are, primarily, agents for the seller. We are dependent on information provided by the seller and whilst we may inspect lots and act reasonably in taking a general view about them we are normally unable to carry out a detailed or any examination of lots in order to ascertain their condition in the way in which it would be wise for a buyer to do. Intending buyers have ample opportunity for inspection of goods and, therefore, accept responsibility for inspecting and investigating lots in which they may be interested. Please note carefully the exclusion of liability for the condition of lots contained in the Conditions of Sale. Neither the seller nor we, as the auctioneers, accept any responsibility for their condition. In particular, mechanical objects of any age are not guaranteed to be in working order. However, in so far as we have examined the goods and make a representation about their condition, we shall be liable for any defect which that examination ought to have revealed to the auctioneer but which would not have been revealed to the buyer had the buyer examined the goods. Additionally, in specified circumstances lots misdescribed because they are ‘deliberate forgeries’ may be returned and repayment made. There is a 3 week time limit. (The expression ‘deliberate forgery’ is defined in our Conditions of Sale).
7. Electrical goods. These are sold as ‘antiques’ only and if bought for use must be checked over for compliance with safety regulations by a qualified electrician first. 8. Export of goods. Buyers intending to export goods should ascertain (a) whether an export licence is required and (b) whether there is any specific prohibition on importing goods of that character because, e.g. they may contain prohibited materials such as ivory. Ask us if you need help. 9.
Bidding. Bidders may be required to register before the sale commences and lots will be invoiced to the name and address on the registration form. Some form of identification may be required if you are unknown to us. Please enquire in advance about our arrangements for telephone bidding.
10. Commission bidding. Commission bids may be left with the auctioneers indicating the maximum amount to be bid excluding buyers’ premium. They will be executed as cheaply as possible having regard to the reserve (if any) and competing bids. If two buyers submit identical commission bids the auctioneers may prefer the first bid received. Please enquire in advance about our arrangements for the leaving of commission bids by telephone or fax. 11. Methods of Payment. The following methods of payment are acceptable. Debit Card drawn on a UK bank and registered to a UK billing address. There is no additional charge for purchases made with these cards.
Bank transfer direct into our bank account, all transfers must state the relevant sale number, lot number and your bid / paddle number. If transferring from a foreign currency, the amount we receive must be the total due in pounds sterling (after currency conversion and the deduction of any bank charges). Our bank details can be found on the front or your invoice or in the sale catalogue under ‘Important Notices’.
Sterling cash payments of up to £12,000 (subject to money laundering regulations). All major UK issued credit cards registered to a UK billing address with the exception of American Express and Diners Club. A surcharge of 3% is payable on all payments made by credit cards. Sterling personal cheques drawn on a UK bank account and made payable to ‘Dreweatts 1759’. It will be necessary to allow at least six working days for the cheque to clear before collecting your purchases.
12. Collection and storage. Please note what the Conditions of Sale state about collection and storage. It is important that goods are paid for and collected promptly. Any delay may involve the buyer in paying storage charges. 13. Droit de suite royalty charges. From 1st January 2012 all UK art market professionals (which includes but is not limited to; auctioneers, dealers, galleries, agents and other intermediaries) are required to collect a royalty payment for all works of art that have been produced by qualifying artists each time a work is re-sold during the artist’s lifetime and for a period up to 70 years following the artists death. This payment is only calculated on qualifying works of art which are sold for a hammer price more than the UK sterling equivalent of EURO 1,000 – the UK sterling equivalent will fluctuate in line with prevailing exchange rates.
respect to these charges will be retained by the auctioneers.
The royalty charge that will be applied to qualifying items which achieve a hammer price of more than the UK sterling equivalent of EURO 1,000, but less than the UK sterling equivalent of EURO 50,000 is 4%. For qualifying items that sell for more than the UK sterling equivalent of EURO 50,000 a sliding scale of royalty charges will apply – for a complete list of the royalty charges and threshold levels, please see www.dacs.org.uk. There is no VAT payable on this royalty charge.
TERMS OF CONSIGNMENT FOR SELLERS 1.

In these Terms the words ‘you’, ‘yours’, etc. refer to the Seller and if the consignment of goods to us is made by an agent we assume that the Seller has authorised the consignment and that the consignor has the Seller’s authority to contract. Similarly the words ‘we’, ‘us’, etc. refer to the Auctioneers.
2. Warranty. The Seller warrants that possession in the lots can be transferred to the with good and marketable title, free from any third party right and encumbrances, or potential claims. The Seller has provided all information concerning the ownership, condition and provenance, attribution, authenticity, import or export and of any concerns expressed by third parties concerning the same.

3. All commissions and fees are subject to VAT at the prevailing rate. 4. Commission is charged to sellers at the following rates:- please enquire at our salerooms. 5. Removal costs. Items for sale must be consigned to the saleroom by any stated deadline and at your expense. We may be able to assist you with this process but any liability incurred to a carrier for haulage charges is solely your responsibility. 6. Loss and damage of goods. (a) Loss and Damage Warranty - Dreweatts is not authorised by the FSA to provide insurance to its clients, and does not do so. However Dreweatts for its own protection, assumes liability for property consigned to it at the lower pre-sale estimate until the hammer falls. To justify accepting liability, Dreweatts makes a charge of 1.5% of the hammer price plus VAT, subject to a minimum charge of £1.50, or if unsold 1.5% of our lower estimate. The liability assumed by Dreweatts shall be limited to the lower pre sale estimate or the hammer price if the lot is sold. (b) If the owner of the goods consigned instructs us in writing not to take such action, the goods then remain entirely at the owners risk unless and until the property in them passes to the Buyer or they are collected by or on behalf of the owner, and clause 6 (a) is inapplicable. 7. Illustrations. The cost of any illustrations is borne by you. If we consider that the Lot should be illustrated your permission will be asked first. The copyright in respect of such illustrations shall be the property of us, the auctioneers, as is the text of the catalogue. 8.
Minimum bids and our discretion. Goods will normally be offered subject to a reserve agreed between us before the sale in accordance with clause 9. We may sell Lots below the reserve provided we account to you for the same sale proceeds as you would have received had the reserve been the hammer price. If you specifically give us a “discretion” we may accept a bid of up to 10% below the formal reserve.
9. Reserves. (a) You are entitled to place prior to the auction a reserve on any lot consigned, being the minimum hammer price at which that lot may be sold. Reserves must be reasonable and we may decline to offer goods which in our opinion would be subject to an unreasonably high reserve (in which case goods carry the storage and loss and damage warranty charges stipulated in these Terms of Consignment).
(b) A reserve once set cannot be changed except with our consent.
(c) Where a reserve has been placed only we may bid on your behalf and only up to the reserve (if any) and you may in no circumstances bid personally.
(d) Reserves are not usually accepted for lots expected to realise below £100
10. Electrical items. These are subject to detailed statutory safety controls. Where such items are accepted for sale you accept responsibility for the cost of testing by external contractors. Goods not certified as safe by an electrician (unless antiques) will not be accepted for sale. They must be removed at your expense on your being notified. We reserve the right to dispose of unsafe goods as refuse, at your expense. 11. Soft furnishings. Soft furnishings. The sale of soft furnishings is strictly regulated by statute law in the interests of fire safety. Goods found to infringe safety regulations will not be offered and must be removed at your expense. We reserve the right to dispose of unsafe goods as refuse, at your expense. The rights of disposal referred to in clause 10 and 11 are subject to the provisions of The Torts (Interference with Goods) Act 1977, Schedule 1, a copy of which is available for inspection on request 12. Descriptions. Please assist us with accurate information as to the provenance etc. of goods where this is relevant. There is strict liability for the accuracy of descriptions under modern consumer legislation and in some circumstances responsibility lies with sellers if inaccuracies occur. We will assume that you have approved the catalogue description of your lots unless informed to the contrary. Where we are obliged to return the price to the buyer when the lot is a deliberate forgery under Condition 15 of the Conditions of Sale and we have accounted to you for the proceeds of sale you agree to reimburse us the sale proceeds. 13. Unsold. Unsold. If an item is unsold it may at our discretion be re-offered at a future sale. Where in our opinion an item is unsaleable you must collect such items from the saleroom promptly on being so informed. Otherwise, storage charges may be incurred. We reserve the right to charge for storage in these circumstances at a reasonable daily rate. 14. Withdrawn and bought in items. These are liable to incur a charge of 15% commission, 1.5 % Loss and Damage Warranty and any other costs incurred including but not limited to illustration and restoration fees all of these charges being subject to VAT on being bought in or withdrawn after being catalogued.
It is entirely the responsibility of the buyer to acquaint himself with the precise EURO to UK Sterling exchange rate on the day of the sale in this regard, and the auctioneer accepts no responsibility whatsoever if the qualifying rate is different to the rate indicated.
15. Conditions of Sale. You agree that all goods will be sold on our Conditions of Sale. In particular you undertake that you have the right to sell the goods either as owner or agent for the owner. You undertake to compensate us and any buyer or third party for all losses liabilities and expenses incurred in respect of and as a result of any breach of this undertaking. We will also, at our discretion, and as far as practicable, confirm that an item consigned for sale does not appear on the Art Loss register, which is administered by an independent third party.
All items in this catalogue that are marked with δ are potentially qualifying items, and the royalty charge will be applied if the hammer price achieved is more than the UK sterling equivalent of EURO 1,000.The royalty charge will be added to all relevant buyers’ invoices, and must be paid before items can be cleared. All royalty charges are passed on to the Design and Artists Copyright Society (‘DACS’), no handling costs or additional fees with
(a) You authorise us to deduct commission at the stated rate and all expenses incurred for your account from the hammer price and consent to our right to retain beneficially the premium paid by the buyer in accordance with our Conditions of Sale and any interest earned on the sale proceeds until the date of settlement.
16. Authority to deduct commission and expenses and retain premium and interest.
(b) You authorise us in our discretion to negotiate a sale by private treaty not later than the close of business 48 hours after the day of sale in the case of lots unsold at auction, in which case the same charges will be payable as if such lots had been sold at auction and so far as appropriate these Terms apply. 17. Warehousing. We disclaim all liability for goods delivered to our saleroom without sufficient sale instructions and reserve the right to make minimum warehousing charge of £10 per lot per day. Unsold lots are subject to the same charges if you do not remove them within a reasonable time of notification. If not removed within three weeks we reserve the right to sell them and defray charges from any net proceeds of sale or at your expense to consign them to the local authority for disposal. 18. Settlement. After sale settlement of the net sum due to you normally takes place within 28 days of the sale (by crossed cheque to the seller) unless the buyer has not paid for the goods. In this case no settlement will then be made but we will take your instructions in the light of our Conditions of Sale. You authorise any sums owed by you to us on other transactions to be deducted from the sale proceeds. You must note the liability to reimburse the proceeds of sale to us as under the circumstances provided for in Condition 12 above. You should therefore bear this potential liability in mind before parting with the proceeds of sale until the expiry of 28 days from the date of sale.

If we are satisfied from the evidence presented that the Lot is a deliberate forgery we shall refund the money paid by you for the Lot including any buyer’s premium provided that (1) if the catalogue description reflected the accepted view of scholars and experts as at the date of sale or (2) you personally are not able to transfer a good and marketable title to us, you shall have no rights under this condition.
The right of return provided by this Condition is additional to any right or remedy provided by law or by these Conditions of Sale.

Any indulgence extended to bidders, buyers or sellers by us notwithstanding the strict terms of these Conditions or of the Terms of Consignment shall affect the position at the relevant time only and in respect of that particular concession only; in all other respects these Conditions shall be construed as having full force and effect. 21.
