Hamish Mackie Mallett is proud to be the first gallery outside Britain to host an exhibition of this outstanding sculptor. Throughout our extensive gallery space we will be able to show the complete range of Mackie’s works, from his early natural studies of fossils created in the late 1990s to his most recent expedition in Antarctica, resulting in whales breaching and studies of king penguins. Both of these will have their debut here at the New York exhibition, along with 11 other new sculptures created in 2011 with this exhibition in mind. This solo exhibition will fill the Mallett galleries at 929 Madison Avenue with over 50 sculptures. Born in 1973 Hamish Mackie grew up on a livestock farm in Cornwall, in the South West of England. He has been sculpting professionally since 1996 and has work in many public and private collections around the world. Public commissions include Merryl Lynch, Hiscox Insurance, Barclay’s Bank, The National Trust, Woburn Abbey, Floors Castle, Chapman University, California and the Gilbane Development Company in Rhode Island. Mackie’s passion for sculpture began at Radley College with subsequent training at the Falmouth School of Art and Kingston University. In 1996, he travelled through Africa and while volunteering at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, he became committed to the sculpture of wildlife. On his return , he took a keen interest in the tradition of European animalier sculptors, closely studying works from Barye to Bugatti. He is influenced by both the realism and drama of the French animalier tradition of the 19th century while also emulating Bugatti’s desire to show the soul and inner emotion of the animals.

He travels widely and works with photographs, drawings and small scale plasticine models sculpted directly from life. It is because of this immersion in the natural environment that Mackie is able to capture the movement, energy and character of these animals, which he casts exquisitely into bronze and also into silver. These many observations of the characteristics of an animal in the wild, whether it is chickens with their staccato movement and quick small gestures or the agility of a leopard climbing a tree, with its strength and fluid movement, enable Mackie to express the spirit of the animal in each sculpture. This sculpting from life, which is Mackie’s fervent passion, allows him to convey many of the poignant juxtapositions of the animal kingdom, where an elephant can be a mother with a calf and also a fierce animal fighting for survival. A life size red deer can be both monarch of the glen, while at the same time be nervous and apprehensive at the approach of man. Mackie’s meticulous observation of nature is continued in the highly skilled production process of cire perdue or lost wax, where he works very closely with his foundry of choice, Lockbund Sculpture, near his home is Oxfordshire. This age old bronze casting method ensures that none of the detail is lost in transforming one material into another. The initial clay model, with all the energy of the artist’s hands and fingers creating a surface is translated through silicone molds, wax positives and ceramic shells, into the final bronze cast. Mackie likes to leave a history on the surface of his sculptures, generating the power and communicating his experience of live observation with the final artwork, even to the extent of carrying out his own patination, which he regards as equally important as the colour of paint on canvas.

Mackie gets up close and personal with his subjects, whether Hares Boxing Left Hook they are a herd of elephants in the Kenyan bush or elephant Bronze, Numbered edition of 12, Signed HAM, Dated 2009, Left: 70 x 42 x 31 cm, Right: 74 x 56 x 33 cm seals on the shore of Antarctica.
