Past Presidents of the RI
History of the RI
New Society of Painters in Water Colours founded 1831 Joseph Powell 1832–1833
The beginnings of the RI can be traced back to the formation of the ‘New Society of Painters in Water Colours’ in 1807. Early exhibitors included William Blake, Paul Sandby, David Cox and Joseph Powell. From the start the New Society showed the work of non-members alongside that of members, a policy still followed today. Sadly the society suffered from financial problems which caused it to close in 1812.
Founding Members Thomas Maisey 1833–1834 Henry Warren 1839–1873 The Society became the Institute of Painters in Water Colours 1863 Louis Haghe 1873–1884 In 1883 the prefix Royal was granted by Queen Victoria Sir James D Linton 1884–1898 Edward John Gregory RA 1898–1909 Sir James D Linton 1909–1916 Sir David Murray RA 1916–1933 Terrick Williams RA 1933–1936 Norman Wilkinson CBE 1936–1963 Rowland Hilder OBE 1963–1973 Aubrey Sykes 1973–1979 Charles Bone 1979–1989 Ronald Maddox 1989–2014 Andy Wood 2014–present
Nineteen years later, in 1831, Joseph Powell with several likeminded artists resurrected the New Society of Painters in Water Colours. The next few years were stormy ones with considerable internal disputes and policy changes. Even so the Society thrived and its growing strength during the mid 19th century shows it at the forefront of the movement to get recognition for watercolour painting and the acceptance of it as a serious medium for art. The RI exhibited in various galleries in Old Bond Street, The Strand and Pall Mall until 1883 when, having become the Institute of Painters in Water Colours, they moved into their new gallery in Piccadilly opposite the RA in Burlington House. In 1885, by command of Queen Victoria, the Institute added the prefix ‘Royal’ to its name. The RI continued in its Piccadilly home throughout the Boer War, WWI and WWII with a great many members joining up to fight or work as war artists both at home and on the front line. Prominent war artist members of the RI include Elizabeth Thompson (Lady Butler), Sir George Clausen and Sir William Orpen. During WWI Norman Wilkinson, a naval officer who eventually became the RI’s 10th President, developed ‘Dazzle Camouflage’ a novel system that influenced many 20th century artists. In the post-war years the galleries in Piccadilly were becoming more and more impractical so when the lease ran out in 1970 the RI joined several other leading art societies in the Federation of British Artists based at Mall Galleries which were opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1971. The galleries which have recently been extensively renovated and modernised remain the RI’s home today.

Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 2016
President’s Foreword Welcome to the 204th exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. The Council and members of the RI have been preparing for this since the end of the 203rd exhibition – working on new paintings, planning and organising. As you walk round you will see some subjects and styles you recognise but also some new work from first-time exhibitors. As the 18th century poet William Cowper said, “Variety’s the very spice of life” and our exhibition aims to celebrate such diversity. No two artists will paint exactly the same thing or even paint the same thing in the same way. Watercolour is a most expressive medium - capable of wild, intensely dramatic effects as well as infinitely subtle moments of contemplative calm. It is no wonder that painting using water based materials has stood the test of time, from cave painting through its long history of illuminated manuscripts and miniatures to its present use as a mature, independent painting medium. It not only has longevity but it is also constantly evolving. The 20th century saw major changes in paint and paper technology, the development of which continues into this century. With research into more robust, lightfast pigments and mediums including new colours, additives and the refining and improvement of watercolour papers - making water based painting not only one of the most exciting and challenging but also one of the most stable and permanent of mediums in the artist’s armoury. As usual during most days of the exhibition there will be members of the RI in attendance in the gallery. They will be here in many guises - to talk to you; to demonstrate their style and methods of painting; to give guided tours of the exhibition and even to offer critiques of visitors’ own paintings. But the annual Spring exhibition at Mall Galleries is not only about the members of the Institute, it is equally about the non-members too. The RI is committed to the principle of exhibiting members’ and non-members’ paintings side by side – it is a vital ingredient of our show. The contribution of non-members is immense and incalculable. Our only regret is that limited space prevents us from showing even more work. This year we are continuing our encouragement of young painters with the generous sponsorship of the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers who annually award The Leathersellers’ Award. We are also indebted to the following for their long-standing and continuing support: Winsor & Newton, Linda Blackstone Gallery, John Purcell, Escoda, Schmincke, Frank Herring & Sons, Gordon Bruce, Margaret Meacher and Anthony J Lester. This year our long list of sponsors is joined by the art material retail chain – Cass Art. Finally I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to RI Council who so generously give their precious time to work to ensure the smooth running of the Institute and help spread the word about watercolour painting - they are the driving force that make this exhibition happen. I hope you enjoy the fruits of their labours. Andy Wood PRI

The Hows and Whys of Commissioning Art How does commissioning work? Why would I commission an artwork in the first place? How much does it cost? How do I choose an artist? If you’ve never commissioned an artwork before, there might be a million questions like the above in your mind. I will attempt to clarify some of these points. Commissioning is the process by which an artist creates a work of art on a client’s invitation. This invitation comes in many shapes and forms. As Commissions Consultant at Mall Galleries, I have seen clients move towards commissioning because the exhibition work they were interested in was sold before they could get to it and they wanted to commission something similar. We have commissioned house and boat portraits, plein air painted landscapes and still lifes of objects. Each object or place would hold sentimental value for the commissioner. We have worked with companies and diverse businesses on commissioning emerging artists for their office walls. We have sourced the right artist for someone’s new home, matching colour and style to personality. As Commissions Consultant my main role is as a mediator. Some clients know who they want to commission, others look to us for help. We talk everything through with the client, presenting you with portfolios and helping to clarify ideas. Once you have settled on an artist we take care of written agreements, organise site visits if necessary and make sure communication runs fluidly between you and the artist you are commissioning. We work with budgets anywhere between £750–100,000, so it’s worth having a chat with our consultants in the gallery. Invoicing in two instalments, a deposit to start and the balance on completion, means that both parties’ interests are protected.

Charles Bone Village commission (detail)
Over the last year I have worked on several watercolour commissions with touching stories behind them. I worked with a client based in Canada who had grown up with a watercolour of the Surrey village that was to be the last place she lived in the UK and wanted to commission the artist, Charles Bone, to revisit the site across the valley from his home. The result was a reconnection with an artist decades after he had first painted the village and a painting which showed how the landscape had (and hadn’t) changed over time. To learn more about commissioning in general join our mailing list for commissions stories and updates. We also run a series of regular events on the subject featuring talks by our artists and Commissions Consultants called Commissioning Conversation. The next in this series, Commissioning Conversation: Society, is on 8 May, 3pm to 4pm. Entry £5 which includes refreshments and entry to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition.
