President’s Foreword

A warm welcome to the Mall Galleries for the 137th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. This has always been the highlight of our year where we showcase paintings from our members, alongside works from non-members.

We are delighted that this year Jenny Eclair has kindly agreed to open our Exhibition and present the various prizes. Jenny is passionate about painting, and in her excellent podcasts as well as in numerous interviews, she has spoken eloquently and with great humour about the happiness she derives from art. We welcome Jenny and thank her warmly for opening our show.

This year a near record number of artists submitted to the open call. The task of selecting the works for exhibition from so many wonderful paintings never gets any less daunting, but we are proud to say that a record number of non-member artists are exhibiting with us this year, many of them for the first time.

The mini theme of our Exhibition this year is simply entitled “EAT”. There is a dedicated wall space in the West Gallery where works on this theme will be displayed, so be on the lookout to see the diverse ways in which this theme has been interpreted by different artists; we are sure you’ll find it interesting.

We are pleased to announce three new prizes this year: The Roger Remington Award for an outstanding painting, the Rosemary Brushes Award for expressive brushwork and the Peter Wileman Award for imaginative work. These awards are added to encourage excellence and exceptional work in our Exhibition. Alongside our other major awards, we will also be presenting a number of certificates of commendation to artists whose work we consider to be exceptional.

In 2024 we have been deeply saddened by the deaths of Robin Mackervoy ROI, Helen Hale ROI, June Mendoza FROI AO OBE RP SWA, Philip James ROI, Valerie Smith Hon Sen ROI, Arthur Easton ROI and Barry Peckham ROI RSMA, as well as Rosemary Carr Hon Sen ROI and Anthony Green Hon ROI RA, whom we lost in 2023. As painters and as human beings, each of these inspirational artists helped make our society what it is today; it means a great deal to us to be able to honour their memories by hanging their work at this year’s Exhibition, and we are extremely grateful to the families of our much-missed colleagues for enabling us to do this.

On a happier note, we are delighted to have the work of our two centenarians, Ruth Pilkington Hon Sen ROI Hon SWA and Anthony Eyton Hon ROI RA PS on show alongside us this year.

This year Trevor Chamberlain FROI RSMA, David Curtis FROI RSMA and the late June Mendoza FROI AO OBE RP SWA, were elected as Fellows of the Institute, the highest status we can bestow, for their outstanding contributions to the Institute over many years.

We believe this year’s exhibition is of a very high standard and there are a lot of great pieces to add to your collection. Please check the events section, so you do not miss our annual Art Event Evening, the ROI Paint Live Challenge, the amazing tour of the exhibition by Peter Graham ROI and many demonstrations by members during the show.

Finally, the ROI would like to thank all the staff of the Mall Galleries for their invaluable help, both in putting on this Exhibition and throughout the year.

Silent auction for the Artists’ General Benevolent Institution (AGBI)

About the AGBI

Life as a professional artist can sometimes be a challenge, and sometimes illness, misfortune or old age makes it impossible to cope financially. That’s where the AGBI can help, the only registered charity dedicated to support visual artists and their dependents in need who live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and who cannot work or earn due to injury or illness. One of the oldest charities in the UK - founded in 1814 by members of the Royal Academy of Arts including J.M.W. Turner, John Constable and John Soane - it is as essential now as it has ever been.

A

fundraising silent auction

The AGBI can only carry its essential work thanks to donations and relies solely on voluntary contributions, which is why The Royal Institute of Oil Painters is organising this year a silent auction of seven paintings from its members with all proceeds going to the charity. The paintings will be on display at the Mall during the ROI Annual Exhibition (28 November until 14 December 2024). You will find them on a wall near the reception desk.

How to bid

The auction will open on Wednesday 13 November and close on Monday 9 December 2024 at midnight.

You can leave your bids at the Mall by placing a paper in the assigned box. (Ask for info at the reception desk).

Alternatively, you can bid online here: www.theroi.co.uk/agbi

Each painting will be sold to the highest bidder and the winners will be contacted on Wednesday 11 December.

Happy bidding!

Do you know any artists that could benefit from the grant?

There are many artists going through illness or difficult times who could benefit from AGBI’s help right now. Maybe it’s you or someone you know. Please pass on the word. The AGBI operates with openness and empathy for every individual circumstance and in total confidentiality.

Donations

And if you are able to, please make a donation no matter how big or small. It can have a huge impact on someone’s life. Please mention ‘ROI’ while making a donation.
