President’s Foreword

Welcome to the Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition 2025!

We are delighted to announce that our annual exhibition is here once again, showcasing the impressive array of talent within our community. Many thanks to Tony Yates and the selection committee for their patient dedication spent reviewing an impressive 3,843 submitted images. This year’s exhibition features 275 works by members alongside 279 open submissions, promising a diverse and vibrant display of artistic expression.

We are especially excited about our Rome Scholarship programme, which continues to foster the next generation of artists. It is inspiring to witness so many young talents from across the country participating in this initiative. The quality of submissions is always exceptional, and we are really pleased to present the work of the three outstanding finalists from our Rising Stars Exhibition in 2024 in our RBA annual exhibition. This year again we will host the Rising Stars Exhibition at the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) in Mayfair between May-July 2025 and as usual the quality of selected work has been exceptional. A special thanks to the scrutiny panel for their commitment, and to Henry Jabbour, our Vice President, for management of the project.

We are also grateful to ROSL for supporting this programme and to Louis Chapple for his expert curation of the exhibition. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Cheryl Culver, our diligent honorary secretary, and all council members for their support and hard work. A special mention must also go to Liam Culver, our webmaster, and Lucy Sanderson, our social media manager, who maintains our wonderful website, ensuring that we remain connected and accessible to our audience.

Grateful thanks indeed must be accorded to Huaicun Zhang and Chen, whose continued patronage enriches our Society beyond measure. Our thanks also extend to all who have contributed through sponsorship and prizes, helping to sustain our Society.

We cherish our ongoing partnership with Minerva Qualiart, our artistic friends in Japan, a collaboration initiated by Mick Davies over a decade ago. Mick has very kindly undertaken to represent the Society at their forthcoming event and festivities in April. We look forward to continuing to strengthen these significant international ties.

With such a wealth of talent and support, the future looks exceptionally bright for the Royal Society of British Artists. Thank you for joining us in celebrating the power of art and creativity.

Welcome to the exhibition!

RBA Rising Stars 2024

We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding finalists from our 2024 Rising Stars Exhibition for the prestigious Rome Scholarship; Joshua Donkor, Catherine Chambers, and Louis Pohl.

After an intense and inspiring selection process, Joshua Donkor emerged as the recipient of this coveted award. His prize includes a £5000 grant and an exclusive four-week artist residency at Sala Uno, a renowned gallery in the heart of Rome. This extraordinary opportunity provides him with accommodation, a dedicated studio space, and the chance to immerse himself in the vibrant artistic culture of the city.

While Joshua takes this next exciting step in his artistic journey, we also celebrate our two outstanding runners-up, Catherine Chambers and Louis Pohl, who have each been awarded a £1000 grant in recognition of their exceptional talent.

As a testament to their achievement, all three finalists have a featured work in our current exhibition, showcasing their artistic vision as part of the Rising Stars/Rome Scholarship initiative—an incredible platform dedicated to supporting and elevating emerging UKbased artists.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Huaicun Zhang, whose generous support makes the Rome Scholarship possible, helping to nurture the next generation of artistic talent.

Stay tuned for this year’s Rising Stars!

Winner of The Whistler Award 2024: Anthony Yates RBA

Each year a member of the RBA is awarded a medal in recognition of their contribution to the society. Anthony was elected a member in 2005, and as well as showing regularly with the society he has served on council for a number of years.

Originally catching the eye for his English post-impressionistic paintings, Anthony’s work has developed over the years into the personal individualistic style he now shows on the walls. This progression has been natural as he reacts to his own environment. His early work was much centred around family life and his neighbourhood. This, of course, changes with the advancing years and Anthony began searching for new ways of expression, reacting to the altered world around him. Natural depictions gave way to other ways of seeing. Paintings arose from various contacts with peoples and projects he was involved with. Then came the national lockdowns forcing him into himself, releasing imagery drawn from imagination only. Now out of those dark days he has opened up again, but the images remain strong and personal as ever.

The Whistler Medal - “truth prevails”

The RBA Whistler Award, shown here actual size, is inscribed with the latin motto “veritas vincit” that means “truth prevails”.

The award goes with a monetary prize kindly donated by Huaicun Zhang Hon. RBA.
