President’s Foreword Welcome to this exhibition, inspired by, and celebrating, all things associated with the sea and the marine environment. Many of us feel the urge to be by, on or in the sea at some point in our lives – perhaps it’s to do with our identity as an island nation. The sea can offer us tranquillity or excitement, serenity or adventure. It has so many moods, so many colours, so many possibilities. With subject matter that offers such amazing diversity, it’s little wonder that the works featured here are also wideranging in style, size, medium and approach. As you would expect, we continue to show the very best in traditional, figurative marine painting, but we have also included some works that take an innovative approach and challenge us to look at our subject matter with fresh eyes. Amongst nearly 400 paintings, drawings, original prints and pieces of sculpture, we are confident there will be works that appeal to each and every one of our visitors, no matter what your taste or how much wall, or display, space you have available. Do please talk to a member of the gallery staff if you would like to make a purchase – they will be very pleased to help you. This year we have, once again, been in the very fortunate position of having a wealth of excellent work from which to make our selection. We received a record number of submissions from nonmembers and it was difficult to whittle them down to the number that we could actually accommodate in the gallery space. Our congratulations go to those artists who successfully made it through the process and now find their work hung alongside our established members. We do hope they will continue to make successful submissions in future years and will go on to become elected members of the Society. To put together an exhibition of this size and quality requires a considerable amount of work. My thanks go to those members who served on the Selection and Hanging Committees, those Council members who help determine the future course of the Society, and those who promote the Society and its exhibitions through our website and social media. As always, my sincere thanks go to all the staff at Mall Galleries, without whom this exhibition would not be possible. And finally, of course, my thanks to you for visiting the exhibition – I do hope it has given you real and lasting pleasure. Elizabeth Smith President, The Royal Society of Marine Artists

The RSMA 35 or Under Award Winner: Natalia Kuptsova Natalia Kuptsova, aged 28, is a Russian born artist and designer, currently based in London. With a background in Fine Art and Design, Natalia has been painting and drawing for over fifteen years. She has exhibited work with many of this country’s leading national art societies, including the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and Society of Wildlife Artists. Her expertise in techniques and materials covers acrylics, oil, watercolour and pastels, with a particular focus on mixing different media to achieve unusual abstract patterns. Each of her works is a combination of plein air and studio painting, and based on multiple sketches and studies done from life. Arrival is part of Natalia’s current project, titled “Discoloration”, which focuses on the problems that marine life - and coral reefs, in particular - face at the moment. “Discoloration” takes us on a journey from untouched nature to its extinction and was inspired by a few trips Natalia took to the Red Sea. As one of the first works from the series, Arrival represents the thrilling moment when humans appear among untouched nature - a point of peace and unity. The palette conveys the happiness and harmony of the world and the joy humans gain from interaction with wildlife. “I remember the first time when I was swimming in coral reefs and what I felt at that moment”, says Natalia, “… Everything I saw was for me a pure magic, I just couldn’t stop looking! The next time I went back to see corals, I took photos, filmed their motion, and made dozens of sketches. I can’t remember anything that’s impressed and inspired me more.”

Interested in Marine Art? If you have enjoyed the work in this exhibition we invite you to join us as a Friend of the RSMA. The very modest annual subscription of £22 brings you the following benefits: • Free ticket to the Friends’ Evening. This enjoyable occasion, with live music, wine and canapes, is held on the evening before the Private View and gives Friends the opportunity to meet and chat with the artists in a relaxed atmosphere. It is also, of course, the first opportunity to view and purchase a painting. • Free Prize Draw. Available exclusively to Friends, the Draw offers two prizes, value £250 each, against the purchase of a painting at the RSMA Annual Exhibition. • Free admission and free catalogue to the Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries, and to any other RSMA exhibition throughout the year. • Free invitations for you and your guests to the Private View. • Significant discounts on the cost of RSMA talks and workshops. • The Society’s newsletter, bringing information about the artists, their work and their travels, and details of all exhibitions. You have no obligations or duties.
