President’s Foreword We are delighted to welcome the Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe DSG, former Member of Parliament, writer and celebrity to ‘Open’ our 117th Annual Exhibition. From feisty and witty appearances on ‘Have I Got News For You’ to her unforgettable and star-turning performances on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, Ann has earned her place in the public’s affections and has been heralded as a ‘national living treasure’ by The Guardian. We thank her for spending time with us and hope that she enjoys the exhibition.

Each year the Society runs a number of workshops in the Mall Galleries’ Learning Centre during the exhibition and also at St George’s College, Addlestone, Surrey, during August. There are demonstrations by Pastel Society members in the main gallery on days listed on page 3 of this catalogue.

An occasion not to be missed is the Art Event Evening. This will take place on Tuesday 1st March from 6pm until 9pm with the Mall Galleries café open until 8pm for drinks Sponsorship is vital to the life blood of any organisation and snacks. Zsuzsi Roboz PS: Prize Bequest Her 2011 series, Face to Face, was devoted to notable British and Irish writers, among them personalities as different from one another as Anita Brookner, Tom Stoppard, Seamus Heaney and PD James. She always tried to give these likenesses something that went further than simple realism. Essentially, she was a symbolist artist – she wanted to capture the creative aura of those she portrayed, many of whom have not otherwise been the subjects of such penetrating works of art. Zsuzsi, who passed away in July 2012 aged 82, generously bequeathed an Award of £5,000. This marks the second year of the Award, which we hope will continue each year at the Annual Exhibition of The Pastel Society at Mall Galleries. The Alfred Teddy Smith and Zsuzsi Roboz Award is designated in Trust to recognise Zsuzsi’s enormous contribution to draughtsmanship. The Award will be presented to a young artist, under the age of 35 years, for their traditional skills used in an original way, at the opening of the 117th Annual Exhibition. The Pastel Society is proud to be associated with this lasting legacy that will bear her name. Zsuzsi Roboz PS Self Portrait

Zsuzsi Roboz was a distinguished member of the Pastel Society with a gift for portraiture. Although she never regarded herself as being primarily a portrait painter, posterity will undoubtedly be grateful to her for her portrayal of leading creative personalities of her time. These included figures from the worlds of dance, theatre, literature and music.

The Winner of the inaugral prize in 2015 was Mike Clapton with his charcoal portrait, Take Care.

Cover Artist: Cheryl Culver PPS RBA I would like to explain a little about my work and the thinking that generates it. Although all of my work is created in my studio, the most important connection is made wandering about in places far from the madding crowd. Lottie, my English Setter, has accompanied me for many years, and my early morning walks are as important to me as they are to her. She is very patient and tolerates my meandering knowing that sooner or later the rucksack will be placed upon the ground, and she can take a little snooze. I use a marker pen to draw as I find it makes me more decisive; the mark is there and there it must stay. Normally one hour is the longest I can stand or perch to make a drawing. The image is then strengthened with density of cross-hatching and general scribble when I get back home or wherever I am based. In the studio these drawings are strong enough to view from a distance in order to assess if there is some potential for a painting. I work on primed mount board or MDF, using Golden Acrylic Pastel Primer and work in many layers of colour, often with a reddish undercoat over a sepia first coat. Each section of the painting is worked to as near a sense of completion as I can achieve, whilst balancing the overall interaction of the colours as I go along. A number of false starts can occur as each new section is approached, and sometimes areas get washed off to enable me to get back to the original texture. I rarely give up on a painting; I may get grumpy and find the problem keeps me awake. But the worst scenario of all is when I have to leave it simmering for a number of days at a point of indecision. I am then VERY grumpy. 10

I have always framed my own work, and in that respect, I am able to ‘test’ the painting in a frame with glass and hang it somewhere to brew, leaving the back unsealed for ease of making any changes. I find taking a photo and looking at the image on screen helps me to see it uncluttered. I am often asked which artists have influenced my work and I have great difficulty coming up with an answer. The truth is that the greatest influence for me has been the landscape itself and the wonder of it. Areas like Dartmoor, which have a magical sense of past, are a true inspiration, and I would far prefer to spend time in such places than struggling around busy, noisy cities.

The Hows and Whys of Commissioning How does commissioning work? Why would I commission an artwork in the first place? How much does it cost? How do I choose an artist? If you’ve never commissioned an artwork before, there might be a million questions like the above in your mind. I’ll clarify some of these points below. Commissioning is the process by which an artist creates a work of art on a client’s invitation. This invitation comes in many shapes and forms. As Commissions Consultant at Mall Galleries, I have seen clients move towards commissioning because the exhibition work they were interested in was sold before they could get to it and they wanted to commission something similar. We have commissioned house and boat portraits, plein air painted landscapes and still lifes of objects. Each object or place holds sentimental value for the commissioner. We have worked with companies and diverse businesses on commissioning emerging artists for their office walls. We have sourced the right artist for someone’s new home, matching colour and style to personality. As Commissions Consultant my main role is as a mediator. Some clients know who they want to commission, others look to us for help. We talk everything through with the client, presenting you with portfolios and helping to clarify ideas. Once you have settled on an artist we take care of written agreements, organise site visits if necessary and make sure communication runs fluidly between you and the commissioned artist. We work with budgets anywhere between £750 – £100,000, so it’s worth having a chat with our consultants in the gallery. Invoicing in two instalments, a deposit to start and the balance on completion, means that both parties’ interests are protected.

Peter Vincent PS Let There Be Light - St Cuthbert’s

A good example of this is a recent commission by a member of The Pastel Society, Peter Vincent – a portrait of a 1950s church in North London. The client, the church’s vicar, had seen the exhibition The Painted Parish online and been inspired to commission an artist to paint his own place of worship. Our art advisors put together a portfolio of possible artists and Peter Vincent PS was chosen. Vincent had previously been commissioned by us to paint the Royal Automobile Club’s Art Deco swimming pool and so he seemed a perfect fit for a 20th century building portrait. The resulting pastel work was a memento of the exchange between a reverend and an artist in the shadow of a modernist church. Anna Bromwich, Commissions Consultant, Mall Galleries 11
