New Year’s Eve Gala 2019-20
We’re Planning a Rollicking Good Time and You Can Be a Part of It! Newnan, Georgia, The 2020s are upon us and Newnan is ready to celebrate! Newnan and Coweta County are in the same position they were 100 years ago prosperous and thriving! We look forward to the future but also, look to the past for design inspiration. We’re planning a fantastic evening with Toni Byrd and her 17 Piece BIG BAND! You will not want to miss the food, open bar and silent auction. To our knowledge, we are the only NYE party in town and we are offering a special bonus which will make these tickets a fantastic Christmas Present. Our party chairs, Chuck and Jenny Enderlin, are Swing Dancing Experts and will be teaching classes prior to the big NYE event. Our goal for the Gala is to raise $20,000 for the Society’s continued education, outreach and preservation efforts. We can not preserve the vast history of Newnan and Coweta County without the help of the community and there are still sponsorship opportunities available. See form within this newsletter. or contact us directly. We have put together this newsletter to illustrate the new vibrancy of our organization and our commitment to Newnan and Coweta County.

Historical Society’s All New Staff Develops New Programming Our new Executive Director, Emily Kimbell, is a Newnan native and a Phd candidate at Georgia State University. Along with her team of Mallory Perry, Assistant Director in charge of rentals and volunteers, and Curator Noelle Hagen-Atwood, they are revamping all of the programs and events for the Historical Society. They have created a beautiful 600 square foot exhibit space which housed their first temporary exhibit highlighting the 1000th football game played by Newnan High. Their successful kickoff of this exhibit was a collaborative pep rally with the NHS band, cheerleaders and boosters.

Popular Lecture Series Continues
Our Free lectures will start at 6:30pm at the Depot, 60 East Broad Street, Newnan, 30263
If you missed our two previous fall lectures: The Georgia Land Lottery of 1827 and Dot Moore’s talk about Mayhayley Lancaster, you can view them on our YouTube Channel:
November 19 - It’s said that every home in Newnan was touched by the RD Cole Manufacturing company. Duke Blackburn, descendant of the RD Cole family, will discuss the family, the business and the impact on the community.
October Events Draw 900 People We witnessed the power of Social Media as our five October events were attended by almost 900 people. There were over 3000 interests and shares. We started the season with a Tribute to Mayhayley Lancaster, west Georgia’s well-known eccentric seer and businesswoman. This was a Day of Alternative Healing held at the Depot. That evening, we hosted almost 200 people for an Evening of Spirit Messages with Newnan’s own Intuitive, Janis Boscarello. The next evening was a party with United Distributors and catered by Newnan Country Club which was a “Spirit’s Tasting” and small bites. Still more fun was planned on Saturday, when over 300 people toured our family friendly Haunted Mansion at the McRitchie-Hollis Museum. The staff and Board were pleased with the success of all events and similar events will be planned for next year.

The Newnan Historic Train Depot Remains a top Event Venue We have or will have hosted over 100 parties and events at the Depot for 2019. With its exposed brick walls, beautiful beams, catering kitchen, plenty of parking and over 3000 square feet of event space, the Depot is an easy place to host a party. Our rates are very reasonable and we allow you to bring your own catering and alcohol. It is a source of pride for the Historical Society that we are the preferred wedding venue in
Coweta County, according the “The Best of Coweta” contest run by the Newnan TimesHerald. This is our major source of revenue and we are delighted to be a part of weddings and family events. We also rent the McRitchie-Hollis Museum. For rental inquiries, please contact Mallory Perry at 770-251-0207 and ask for a digital brochure.
A New Group Tour “The Newnan Day Trip.”
The Newnan-Coweta Historical manages two facilities: the 1937 mansion, McRitchie-Hollis Museum, and the 1854 Train Depot with our exhibit of the Battle of Brown’s Mill, both of which are on our Group tour. The tour also includes a tour of the 1904 Historic Courthouse.
The tour lasts about 4 hours, including a break for lunch and shopping. Cost is $8 per person, not including lunch. Please call Mallory Perry at 770-251-0207 to discuss and schedule your group’s tour.
Docent Training Resumes in January Do you love history and like to tell stories? We would love to have you join our Volunteer staff. Training sessions are the first Saturday and Tuesday of the month. Please email NCHSevents@gmail.com to relay your interest and reserve your space.
Why is the Depot “historic?” In July of 1864 was the beginning of Sherman’s Atlanta campaign. Newnan had been unscathed by war and because the railroad tracks were still operational, was a hospital town for the Confederacy. Every barn, and shed housed the sick and wounded and private homes were used to house medical staff. On July 30, 1864, 550 Alabama cavalrymen had stopped in Newnan to rest. The train had
sounded the whistle to call the soldiers back to the train as they had gotten word that the Union Army was close by. Imagine their surprise when they started to board the train, the 8th Indiana Cavalry bounded the hill on East Broad and was headed for the Depot. A skirmish ensued but the real fighting commenced in the front field of Mr. Cook, several miles away. This has become known as the Battle of Brown’s Mill.
