I ntroduction The USP, or Universal self-loading pistol, was first designed in September of 1989 for U.S. commercial and law enforcement markets. In 1991 USP prototypes participated in rigorous testing for the Offensive handgun Weapon System program requested by U.S. Special Operations Command. The USP was formally introduced in January of 1993 with the USP40, chambered for the increasingly popular .40 S&W cartridge. The USP is a more traditional handgun than many of H&K’s other more innovative models. It features a molded polymer frame, making the weapon lightweight while still maintaining durability. Designers took the best features from several other very successful handguns and incorporated them into the USP including a recoil reduction system which reduces recoil by up to 30%. Using this system the USP has been tested to fire more than 30,000 high pressure +P cartridges and 6,000 proof loads without damage or excessive wear to any major components. Other features include an ambidextrous MAGAZINE release, combination safety/decocking lever, adjustable SLIDE lock and safety configurations, a Picatinny accessory rail, and optional Tritium night sights.

1. Decock The USP
a. P ull the SAFETY LEVER downward past the fire position until the hammer drops forward (If the hammer is not retracted skip this step)
2.Place The USP on SAFE
a. P ush the SAFETY LEVER upward to the safe position. The weapon will be on safe when the white position indicator is aligned with the white S
3. Remove the MAGAZINE
a. H old the butt of the MAGAZINE with one hand b. P ull downward on the ambidextrous MAGAZINE release lever and remove the MAGAZINE from the RECIEVER

4. Clear the USP
a. E nsure the weapon is not loaded by pulling the SLIDE rearward and visually inspecting the chamber The weapon is not loaded if there is no bullet in the chamber
5. Remove the SLIDE-STOP PIN a. P ull the SLIDE rearward until the SLIDE-STOP PIN is aligned with the TAKE-DOWN NOTCH. b. P ush the SLIDE-STOP PIN from the opposite side of the weapon until the pin begins to separate from the weapon c. R emove the SLIDE-STOP PIN by pulling it clear from the weapon while applying slight rearward pressure on the SLIDE
6. S eparate the SLIDE from the RECEIVER
a. P ull the SLIDE forward while pulling the receiver rearward from the RECIEVER

7. R emove the RECOIL SPRING ASSEMBLY
a. A pply slight forward pressure to the RECOIL SPRING ASSEMBLY and pivot the assembly away from the weapon
8. S eparate the RECOIL SPRING ASSEMBLY
a. H old the RECOIL SPRING while pulling the RECOIL SPRING GUIDE away
9. R emove the Barrel
a. P lace one finger on the edge of rear edge of the BARREL and pull slightly forward b. P ull the BARREL up from the SLIDE c. P ull the BARREL back until it is separated from the SLIDE
