2013 professional catalog
United States Coast Guard Serious Products for Serious Users Any rescue professional who puts their life on the line to save others will tell you that when an emergency kicks in, they just go. The last thing on their minds is whether or not their equipment will work. No one understands this better than the United States Coast Guard who put their lives on the line daily. In 2011, when Mustang Survival won a five year contract to supply the USCG with a brand new dry suit series specifically tailored for their mission critical needs, it was their invaluable feedback that ultimately drove the development of Mustang Survival’s next generation of water rescue dry suits; the Sentinel™ Series. The Sentinel™ dry suits address two critical factors that can hinder a rescuer’s effectiveness – the suits’ fit and field repair capabilities. Based on two years of in depth research, the Sentinel™ sizing platform takes into account seven key measurements that affect range of motion and comfortable fit. Furthermore, Sentinel™ suits’ neck and wrist seals and minor punctures can be field repaired and ready for use in less than an hour. ”It is an honor and a privilege to supply the Coast Guard with our newest products. The Sentinel™ dry suits are a result of understanding their needs and developing innovative solutions that provide outstanding performance. These men and women who put their lives on the line deserve no less than the best.” Brian Dalgliesh, Mustang Survival’s Business Development Lead for United States Coast Guard

we save lives for a living... is what we do at Mustang Survival. From the initial product research and testing of a new flotation device to the final stitch sewn in a water rescue dry suit for the Coast Guard, each step we take in designing, producing and delivering the solution is a step towards helping save lives. For over 45 years we have been providing quality lifesaving solutions to recreational, professional and military users around the world. During this time, we were also partnering with influential industry associations that shape current and future standards, working with key influencers who drive innovation in their markets, and supporting local initiatives that promote marine safety in their communities. By working with our valuable partners in the industry, the media, and the community, we have the opportunity to extend our reach in educating, supporting, and promoting lifesaving solutions to our users. In return, we receive invaluable feedback that drives the innovation and improvements in our product developments. In this year’s catalog, we are proud to share the results of our successful partnerships. From being on the board of an influential industry association, to partnering with a national charity to promote water safety, to working with professionals and media personalities to increase positive awareness for PFD wear, we will continue to work with the communities and industry partners that are important to our users and to us. Together, we will continue to save lives for a living. Mustang Survival

A Leader in Commercial Marine Safety America's First and Only Inflatable Work Vest According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), drowning after a fall overboard is the second leading cause of death among all commercial fishermen. There is no question work vests are essential, but what do commercial workers really think about wearing PFDs? In a study commissioned by NIOSH, six PFDs, including Mustang Survival’s MD3188 Inflatable Work Vest, were tested by 400 Alaskan fishermen based on usability factors most important while they work. Of the six PFDs selected, the MD3188 was the highest rated PFD based on its lightweight design, durability, easy to clean fabric, and hydrostatic activation system that eliminates accidental inflation due to rain and spray. The ease-ofuse and comfort made it a favorite on deck and the only PFD in the study to receive a four-star rating. The MD3188 is also the first and only USCG approved inflatable work vest on the market. For more information, visit www.mustangsurvival.com/learning-zone

hydrostatic inflator technology HIT™ inflator technology has been used for over 10 years by professional and recreational users. Hydrostatic pressure is applied to all objects submerged in water. The HIT™ inflator needs only to be submerged 4 inches (10 cm) for the hydrostatic pressure to open a pressure valve releasing a pin mechanism, automatically inflating the PFD.
hit™ advantages • Low maintenance • Reliable inflation – inflates only under hydrostatic pressure or by manually pulling the inflation cord and will not inflate due to rain, humidity or splash • Easy to see safety inspection window – easily view the inflator replacement date and inflator status through the safety inspection window - green indicates ready for use

The Evolution of the World’s First Floater™ Coat Back in 1967, Mustang Survival’s founder, Irv Davies, invented the world’s first flotation coat. Little did he know that for the next 45 years, his company and the people behind it would continue to drive the innovation that launched his first Floater™ Coat in the market, helping to shape many of the safety standards that keep recreational, professional, and military users safe today. Now, 45 years later, the Catalyst is a rebirth of the original Floater™ Coat. Not only is this flotation coat more stylish and the most comfortable to wear, but it is also the market’s ONLY waterproof and breathable flotation garment. The secret behind this innovation? The same entrepreneurial spirit that started Mustang Survival 45 years ago and that lives in our vision and values today.
revolutionary Technology m-tech comfort system™ The secret to the most comfortable flotation suit on the market? The M-Tech Comfort System™: a 3-layer, waterproof, breathable, wearable flotation system. A suit that keeps you dry, floats you when you need it and is so comfortable you’ll want to wear it even when you’re not on the boat. That’s the M-Tech Comfort System™ and it’s only available from Mustang Survival.
1st Layer: A waterproof, breathable tri-laminate outer shell that keeps rain and spray in the ocean where they belong. 2nd Layer: Segmented foam that moves and flexes with you.
3rd Layer: A wicking liner that aids breathability.

On-Water Visibility You Can Save What You Can See Often the success of a rescue depends on how visible victims are in the water and it’s no wonder high visibility aids such as reflective tapes and beacons are essential parts of lifesaving equipment. But to get to the very basics of on-water visibility, our Research and Development team wanted to find out which color is the most conspicuous when floating on the water. Our R&D team took the lead on conducting a study on high visibility colors, partly sponsored by WorkSafeBC's Research Secretariat program, and found that fluorescent green routinely beat standard oranges, reds, and yellows in terms of visual detection in water – particularly in low-light conditions. To read more about our On-Water Visibility study, visit www.mustangsurvival.com/learning-zone

HIGGINS AND LANGLEY MEMORIAL FUND The Tune of Unsung Heroes
Swift water rescuers are all too familiar with The Higgins and Langley Memorial Fund and the haunting award-winning video and tune of ”Ready for the Storm”. Created by award-winning documentary filmmaker Nancy Rigg, the film is a realistic documentation of swift water rescue professionals and the dangers they face. In honor of Earl Higgins and Jeffrey Langley, who both gave their lives to save others, the Higgins and Langley Memorial Awards were established in 1993 by a committee of swift water professionals and recognizes preparedness, teamwork, and success under extreme conditions. This year at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) 2012, we were proud sponsors of the Higgins and Langley Memorial Fund and helped increase their exposure at this annual exhibition for firefighters, water rescue professionals, and first responders. Ensuring the safe return of rescue professionals and their victims is at the heart of this community and what we do.

the science of survival In just 20 minutes, cold water can deprive you of all mental and physical capacities, leading to hypothermia, unconsciousness and even death. Our team of engineers have done extensive research to understand cold water survival. How long a person can survive in cold water primarily depends on the water’s temperature, exposure time, and the thermal insulation of the victim’s protective clothing. To create the most effective protection attainable, we begin by evaluating the clothing’s insulation (measured with the unit ”Clo”). We determine the rate at which heat is lost from the body, as well as the difference in temperature between the skin and the water. From these values, predictions can be made of the rate at which a person’s body temperature will drop in cold water.
What is ”Clo” and what does it mean? ”Clo” is a measurement of the thermal comfort of a suit or device (CLOthing Insulation). One ”Clo” represents the thermal comfort of an average person in business clothing in a room temperature indoor environment. Fractions of this thermal comfort are what are perceived when worn in the water. Each of the values are below 1.0 because water transfers heat out of the body 25 times faster than air. Our products are interlined with our exclusive AirSoft™ closed cell foam. This foam not only provides maximum insulation against the cold, it also keeps you afloat to protect you from drowning. Wearing a Mustang Survival suit will increase cold water survival time exponentially.
