HAR VEST 12TH OC TOBER 2014

MR & MRS TURINOMUJUNI Vicar’s Blog/Tearfund Update

‘David Turinomujuni is 68 and married to Prisca who is 8 years his junior. They've been married for many years and together they have 7 children of whom 4 have families of their own in the area and 3 (Joshua, Ben and Jackie) still live with their parents. Like so many families in Kahama, before the Kigezi Diocese Water and Sanitation Project arrived, they had no readily available water for preparing food or indeed to use for any other domestic purposes. Trekking down into the valley and hiking back up laden with jerry cans every day, not only took a long time but also sapped their energy, leaving them with little strength to do all the other manual work involved in their day to day lives. The combination of a 4,000 litre tank together with health aware-

ness training and Biblical inspiration to change their own situations with the natural resources God has placed around them, has really turned their lives around. 'I am happy that, during the rainy season, there is enough clear water to prepare food for us to wash and to spray Irish potatoes and beans' says David. Rather than living tired without the energy to dream for a future, David and Prisca now have hope. They hope for God’s provision for school fees from a good harvest season and they now pray with faith for the healing of a sick member of their extended family. Clean water and living faith have come to this family. Please pray for a good harvest for the Turinomujunis, with enough income generated to get the chil-

Please also pray for immediate healing and continued health for the family, through the power of the Spirit and the renewing of their minds which has come from the practical training they have received.’ These encouraging words come from Tearfund, and describe the impact of KDWSP on just one of many families in southern Uganda. Through Tearfund Malmesbury Abbey is a Connected Church to this project. Our Harvest offering today goes to this life-changing work. We’d encourage everyone to take a Dinner for Kigezi envelope and donate the cost of meal of some sort this Harvest.

JOHN 6:1-15 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing those who were ill.3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming towards him, he said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, ‘It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!’ 8

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 ‘Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?’ 10 Jesus said, ‘Make the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. 12

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, ‘Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.’ 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, ‘Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.’ 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. Take 10 minutes together to share your reflections on what stood out to you in this Sunday’s teaching and worship. Select four people to read John 2:12-19, John 11:55-12:3, John 13:1 and then finally John 6:1-4. What are the three great events in the ministry of Jesus that are in view here and what is John linking them to? Take a few minutes to read Exodus 16, a miraculous experience for the people of the Passover, and then summarise the story together. Now read John 6:4-15 and Jesus own reflections on this in John 6:2635. What is being said? Read Exodus 16:6-9 again and John 6:41-43? You can see the link, but discuss together what is the spiritual root of this condition. ‘To be a disciple of Jesus is to participate in the extraordinary things of the Kingdom in very ordinary contexts.’ Discuss in light of your own experience.

Whatever your age you can be part of this new exciting event on Oct 31st aimed at primary school age children! Before the event we need people to pray, make fairy cakes and sew simple drawstring goody bags (material provided). At the event we need helpers to move chairs, supervise bouncy castles, serve hot dogs and run side shows. If you are able to offer your support for this great community outreach event please contact Gill Shaw (on 825647) or Sandie in the Parish Office.

ABBEY GUILD

JOBS

The Abbey Guild is next meeting on Tuesday 14th October at 2.30pm in The King’s Church. You are very welcome to hear the talk ‘What Esther did next in Zambia’ , followed by refreshments. More details from Helen Small.

A few significant roles are emerging in the life of the Abbey that we’d invite you to prayerfully consider if you are the right person for. We’re currently looking for a Health & Safety coordinator, a Safeguarding Adults responsible person, an extra Café Director and Bookshop Director, someone for the PCC to represent people in their 20s and 30s, a New Media person (Facebook & Twitter) and a chair for our Property Team. E-mail Neill if you’d like a conversation about any of these.

NOTICEBOARD BBC HISTORY Thanks to those who are helping in the Abbey Café for the BBC History Weekend. Clare Cork still needs volunteers to help next Thursday (pm &eve), Friday (pm &eve, & Saturday (all day) at a time to suit you. Please contact Clare on cafe@malmesburyabbey.com or 07920793594 if you are ready and willing and don’t mind hearing some outstanding history lectures for free.

ALAN & NICKY SMITH FAREWELL The Abbey says farewell to Alan & Nicky Smith who move to Somerset this weekend, with their daughters Natalie & Laura. Tears and hugs at the 4pm and our massive thanks for Nicky’s long and brilliant commitment to Junior Church and Alan's unique contribution to the sound desk.

PCC UPDATE FROM SARAH DOYLEY The Abbey PCC (Parochial Church Council) met on 20th September. After Sam Saunders led us in prayer, we were encouraged to hear how God is growing our Abbey life together: Daily Morning Prayer at 9am is often well attended, HiTS is evolving into a fresh expression of church—The Meeting Place, our new Alpha Course has 40 attendees, and Glow in the Dark, a party for our younger members, is planned for Halloween. There has also been an encouraging number of enquiries and applications for our Children's & Youth Minister post. After coffee the PCC Focus was a presentation on Lifepath and a conversation with its leader, Lianne Smith, from Scripture Union. Next year we will be partnering with Scripture Union to run Lifepath in the Abbey from 29th June - 3rd July. Lifepath will use the monastic backdrop and Christian history of the Abbey to offer a unique RE day trip to Year 5 pupils from Swindon, Chippenham and the local area. Full PCC minutes are available from the Parish Office.
