THE BISHOPS’ VISITATION …NOT ONE BISHOP BUT T WO!

Diana Crowe & Mark Hunt, Churchwardens, Malmesbury Abbey

As some of you may already be aware, one of the three 2017 Bishops’ Visitations in the Bristol Diocese took place in Malmesbury Abbey on the evening of 8th May. The service was conducted by the Bishop of Swindon, Rt Rev Lee Rayfield, the Visitation Charge (Talk) was delivered by the Bishop of Bristol, Rt Rev Mike Hill, with the Archdeacon of Malmesbury, Ven Christine Froude, and the Diocesan Registrar, Mr Roland Callaby, in attendance to administer a legal declaration. All very formal, so what was all that about?

we serve, and a chance to meet, greet and socialise with the churchwardens and clergy in our neighbouring parishes. You can be assured that we are now officially Churchwardens for Malmesbury Abbey and Brokenborough, having made the declaration to perform our duties “faithfully and diligently”, and having publicly stated that we will  

In formal terms, it was the annual admittance and licensing, required by Church Law, of the newly appointed churchwardens for parishes in the locality. In reality, an evening of encouragement to those embarking on a year of service, of worship and prayer for the growth of the church

   

Speak out for those who have no voices. Stand up for the rights of all the oppressed. Speak truth and justice. Defend the poor and needy. Speak out for those who have no choices. Cry out for those who live without love.

Matthew 28:16-20 16

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’

Additional Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11-end

DISCIPLESHIP D A I LY R E A D I N G S 1. Do you have a vision of what Christ desires for/of his Church? 2. See verse 17; why do you think that some worshipped but some doubted? 3. See verse 18; what does Jesus’ claim to such authority mean for your Christian life? 4. How significant is Christ’s great commission in your life and the life of our Church? 5. What do you understand Jesus meant by the word ‘disciple’? 6. Do you think that you and your fellow Church members need further help to be disciples? 7. What does baptism in the name of the Trinity mean for you? 8. How have you experienced the truth of Christ’s promise in verse 20: “I am with you always...”?

CHRISTIAN AID News just in… The final (possibly) total funds raised for this year’s Christian Aid week in Malmesbury has risen to £8.142. Thank you so much to all who have donated and/or contributed in some way.

PA R I S H D I R E C T O R Y We are in the process of creating a brand new Parish Directory so, even if you are included in the old directory, maybe you’re a life-long member or you are new and feel that the Abbey is your home, we would really like you to be included in the new Parish Directory. None of this is compulsory and is basically to help us all stay in touch and to have an efficiently running church. Please collect your BLUE FORM from the back of the Abbey and return to the Parish Office by 25th June at the latest.

Join the Abbey Leadership as the church gathers for Glory! prayer this Tuesday evening – 13th June. Arrive at 7.30pm for a time of extended contemporary worship followed by a time of Spirit-led intercession together. Finishes at 9pm.

To keep the Abbey open on Sundays we desperately need stewards. We especially need one or two for the FIRST SUNDAY of every month for 2-3 hours from 12 noon. This is such an important ministry in the life of the Abbey and a great way to welcome visitors to our beautiful 12th Century Church. Please contact Linda Weston on lw19w10@btinternet.com
