THE WAY

Andrew Beebee – Children’s and Youth Minister

We live in a world in which many seek meaning and purpose in things with a limited shelf-life such as career, financial security and relationships. There’s nothing wrong with these things in themselves but careers end, financial security can be fragile and all human relationships let us down. This Sunday we will be exploring Jesus’ amazing words, ‘I am the way.’ The way to true and lasting meaning, purpose and hope. As a church family we exist to share the message of Jesus with those who don’t yet know him. It’s estimated that 95% of children and young people in England and Wales aren’t part of a church. As Jesus followers we are called to respond. This is why I am so excited about Lifepath. We will be welcoming more than 450, 9 to10 year olds from 10 different schools into the Abbey between 3rd to 5th July. The Abbey partners with Scripture Union and ‘in:School’ for this event and it’s

made possible because of a large team of volunteers. Children are given the opportunity to imagine what life might have been like living as a monk in the Abbey; there will be workshops to help them do this including Monks Kitchen, Herb Garden, Eilmer the Flying Monk, Jesus Stories and a Prayer Journey. There will also be a music band and a chance to build a cairn at the end of the day as a way of reflecting on all that they have experienced and the choices they want to make in the future. Please add Lifepath to your prayers and talk to me to find out more about how you could get involved. Let’s also be asking God in this season to be giving us courage, wisdom and creativity in sharing the wonderful news that Jesus is ‘The Way.’

John 14:1-14 ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.’ 5 Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ 6 Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.’ 8 Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’ 9 Jesus answered: ‘Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

To keep the Abbey open on Sundays we desperately need stewards. We especially need one or two for the FIRST SUNDAY of every month for 2-3 hours from 12 noon. This is such an important ministry in the life of the Abbey and a great way to welcome visitors to our beautiful 12th Century Church. Please contact Linda Weston on lw19w10@btinternet.com

MARK Not many people would associate watching a performance of Marks gospel as being likely to be a fun night. Prepare to be amazed as the genuine humour that’s contained in this 90 minute one man play shines through on the big screen alongside the biblical message. See and hear the gospel as it was originally intended, spoken aloud in a way that spoke to the crowds in its day but remarkably speaks to the crowds in our day.
