NINE LESSONS & CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT including The Malmesbury Motets by Nico Muhly
17TH & 18TH DECEMBER 2016, 6.30PM
VICAR'S WELCOME I would like to warmly welcome you to Malmesbury Abbey for tonight’s service of Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight. The Abbey Nine Lessons may well be an important part of your Christmas each year, the moment when Christmas really begins. Or this might be your very first time inside our 12th century walls. Regardless, you are very welcome and I hope this night of immense beauty and joy allows you a brief window to consider afresh how the birth of Jesus Christ changed the course of human history. Together we bring to life the events of Bethlehem some 2000 years ago with ancient readings, traditional congregational carols and seasonal music by Byrd, Victoria, Sweelinck and Rachmaninoff. The Abbey Choir will also be singing newer works by Ēriks Ešenvalds, John Tavener and Jonathan Dove and reprising our 2016 commission from the American composer Nico Muhly, The Malmesbury Motets. These three astonishing pieces, accompanied by Liam Byrne on the Viola da Gamba, were first performed last month at our Advent Carol services, and freshly recreate with music texts from Genesis, Isaiah and St John that imagine the light of God shining in the darkness of the world. May the mystery and the beauty of this night be a rich blessing to you, and those you love. And may the everlasting truth of this night bring you renewed hope throughout the coming year. Revd Canon Neill Archer Christmas, 2016.

A
nd through all His wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms He lay: Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as He. For He is our childhood’s pattern; Day by day, like us He grew; He was little, weak and helpless, Tears and smiles like us He knew; And He feeleth for our sadness, And He shareth in our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love, For that Child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in Heav’n above, And He leads His children on To the place where He is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see Him; but in Heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high; Where like stars His children crowned All in white shall wait around.

Bidding Prayer
Revd Canon Neill Archer Vicar, Malmesbury Abbey
The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

O come O come Emmanuel
O
come, O come, Emmanuel! And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, thou Rod of Jesse! free Thine own from Satan’s tyranny From depths of hell, thy people save, And give them victory o’er the grave: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, thou dayspring come and cheer Our spirits by thine advent here; Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death’s dark shadows put to flight: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, thou Key of David come And open wide our heav’nly home; Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, O come, thou Lord of Might, Who to thy tribes on Sinai’s height, In ancient times did give the law In cloud and majesty and awe: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Hymn
It came upon a Midnight Clear
I
t came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, goodwill to men From heavens all gracious King!" The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come, With peaceful wings unfurled; And still their heavenly music floats O'er all the weary world: Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hovering wing, And ever o'er its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long; Beneath the angel-strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong; And man, at war with man, hears not The love-song which they bring: O hush the noise, ye men of strife, And hear the angels sing!
For lo! the days are hastening on, By prophet-bards foretold, When with the ever-circling years Comes round the age of gold; When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendours fling, And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing.

Hymn
In the bleak mid-winter
I
n the bleak mid-winter frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter long ago. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him nor earth sustain; Heav’n and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak mid-winter a stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom cherubim worship night and day, A breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom angels fall down before, The ox and ass and camel which adore. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air But only His mother in her maiden bliss Worshipped the Beloved with a kiss. (Unaccompanied) What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a wise man I would do my part; Yet what I can, I give Him - give my heart.

S Â
ilent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright round yon virgin mother and child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace. The Lamb John Tavener
Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Gave thee life, and bid thee feed By the stream and o'er the mead; Gave thee clothing of delight, Softest clothing, woolly, bright; Gave thee such a tender voice, Making all the vales rejoice? Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Little Lamb, I'll tell thee, Little Lamb, I'll tell thee; He is called by thy name. For he calls himself a Lamb. He is meek, and he is mild, He became a little child. I, a child, and thou a lamb, We are called by his name. Little Lamb, God bless thee! Little Lamb, God bless thee!

God rest ye merry gentlemen
G
od rest you merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, For Jesus Christ our Saviour Was born upon this day, To save us all from Satan's power When we were gone astray: O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.
From God our heavenly Father A blessed angel came, And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by name: O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. The shepherds at those tidings RejoicĂŠd much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding In tempest, storm and wind, And went to Bethlehem straightway, This blessĂŠd Babe to find: But when to Bethlehem they came, Whereat this Infant lay, They found Him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His mother Mary kneeling, Unto the Lord did pray: Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and charity Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All others doth deface:

Of the Father’s love begotten

At His Word the worlds created; He commanded; it was done: Heaven and earth and depths of ocean In their threefold order one; All that grows beneath the shining Of the light of moon and sun, Evermore and evermore!

Come and behold him, born the King of angels; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him Christ the Lord.
