Looking beyond the airport campus, we sought out new opportunities to invest in our islands’ precious heritage through the Malta Airport Foundation. The Foundation is currently supporting the conservation and restoration of the fourteen paintings making up the Way of the Cross at the Church of Saint Mary of Jesus–better known as Ta’ Ġieżu– in Valletta. The church, which was originally designed by Girolamo Cassar, is a true gem, and the Foundation could not pass up the opportunity to contribute to the preservation of some of the art housed within it. We spent a most interesting morning learning about the restoration from the project’s lead restorer Valentina Lupo as well as the history of the church from its guardian Fr Ramon Farrugia, and put pen to paper to share some of what we learnt in this issue of MIA Link. We feel it is our responsibility to embark on such projects not only because we want to safeguard our heritage for future generations of locals but also because this is what contributes to a unique tourist offering. Competition between southern European destinations is not expected to become any less fierce over the coming months, and ensuring that Malta has a high-quality product to offer, in addition to great weather and idyllic beaches, better poises our islands to be the destination of choice for more tourists. In the meantime, our traffic development team has been busy meeting airlines and attending conferences to secure better connections for our islands. You can read more about some of our new connections for summer and how traffic through Malta International Airport is shaping up for 2023 in the following pages of the publication. We wish you a pleasant read and remind you that you can get in touch with the MIA Link team by sending an email on shareholders@maltairport.com.

Merħba GĦALL-ĦARĠA TA’ MARZU TA’ MIA LINK Għażiż Azzjonist, Is-sena 2023 bdejnieha fuq nota differenti ħafna missentejn ta’ qabilha billi żvelajna l-viżjoni tagħna għallħames snin li ġejjin għall-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta. Għalkemm is-sena 2027 forsi ma tidhirx daqstant imbiegħda, matul il-ħames snin li ġejjin, il-kampus talajruport ser ikun qiegħed jgħaddi minn bidliet kbar; minn ħwienet ġodda u spazji b’dehra friska għal żona tad-dwana ħafna akbar u espansjoni tat-terminal lejn id-direzzjoni talPunent. Investimenti bħal dawn huma bżonjużi minħabba li jippermettulna nibqgħu rilevanti u nkomplu nantiċipaw ilbżonnijiet tal-passiġġieri tagħna li dejjem qegħdin jevolvu. Dejjem ħassejna l-bżonn li ninvestu fl-ajruport anke għaliex nemmnu li qegħdin f’pożizzjoni unika li nagħtu lit-turisti li jaslu f’pajjiżna bl-ajru l-aqwa merħba fil-Gżejjer Maltin. Matul l-2022, l-ajruport irċieva voti ta’ fiduċja inkoraġġanti fis-servizzi u l-faċilitajiet li joffri mill-passiġġieri permezz tal-istħarriġ Airport Service Quality. Dan wassal sabiex, għall-ħames sena konsekuttiva, l-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta, ġie rikonoxxut mal-aqwa ajruporti Ewropej talistess daqs tiegħu. Iżda l-investimenti tagħna ma jaslux biss sad-dawra talajruport. Fil-fatt, permezz tal-Malta Airport Foundation komplejna nfittxu opportunitajiet ta’ investiment filwirt prezzjuż tal-Gżejjer Maltin. Bħalissa l-fondazzjoni qiegħda tappoġġja l-konservazzjoni u r-restawr talerbatax-il pittura li jikkostitwixxu l-Via Sagra li tinsab filknisja Ta’ Ġieżu. Il-knisja, li oriġinarjament ġiet iddisinjata minn Ġlormu Cassar, hija ġawhra fil-kapitali tagħna, u l-fondazzjoni ma setgħetx ma taħtafx l-opportunità li tikkontribwixxi għall-preservazzjoni ta’ ftit mill-opri tal-arti

li jinsabu fiha. Xi ġimgħat ilu qattajna ftit tal-ħin f’din ilknisja fejn sirna nafu aktar dwar l-istorja tagħha mingħand il-gwardjan Patri Ramon Farrugia u dwar il-proġett ta’ restawr li ser isir fuq il-Via Sagra mingħand il-persuna li qiegħda tmexxih Valentina Lupo. Dak li sirna nafu qegħdin naqsmuh magħkom fil-paġni li jmiss ta’ din il-pubblikazzjoni – nittamaw li ssibuh ta’ interess. Aħna nħossu li hija responsabbiltà tagħna li nappoġġjaw proġetti bħal dawn mhux biss għax nixtiequ ngħinu sabiex il-wirt tagħna ma jintilifx, iżda anke għax nemmnu li huwa dan il-wirt li jsawwar prodott turistiku uniku. Il-kompetizzjoni qalila li rajna bejn destinazzjonijiet fin-Nofsinhar tal-Ewropa f’dawn l-aħħar sentejn mhix mistennija tbatti. Għaldaqstant, bi prodott turistiku ta’ kwalità għolja, flimkien ma’ temp sabiħ u għażla wiesgħa ta’ bajjiet, Malta tkun tista’ tispikka minn fost il-kompetizzjoni u tattira turisti ta’ kwalità. Sadanittant, it-tim tal-iżvilupp tat-traffiku tagħna baqa’ għaddej b’laqgħat ma’ diversi linji tal-ajru u attendenza f’konferenzi internazzjonali sabiex ikompli jsaħħaħ innetwerk ta’ rotot li jgħaqqdu lill-Gżejjer Maltin mal-bqija tad-dinja. Tista’ taqra aktar dwar l-iskeda tagħna għallistaġun tas-sajf u kif bdiet is-sena 2023 fir-rigward ta’ passiġġieri fil-paġni li jmiss tal-pubblikazzjoni. Filwaqt li nittamaw li dak li ħejjejna għal din il-ħarġa ssibuh ta’ interess, infakkrukom li tistgħu tgħaddu s-suġġerimenti tagħkom lit-tim li jieħu ħsieb din il-pubblikazzjoni fuq shareholders@maltairport.com.

The year 2023 has, so far, been a breath of fresh air, allowing us to hit the ground running and unveil our five-year vision for Malta International Airport. While 2027 may not seem too distant, over the next five years, the airport campus is set to undergo major transformations; from new eateries and reimagined spaces to a much larger customs area and a westward terminal expansion. Such investments are necessary as they allow us to be ahead of the curve and anticipate our guests’ changing expectations, whilst continuing to deliver on our promise of giving tourists a great first impression of the Maltese Islands. In 2022, we received reassuring votes of confidence in our services and airport facilities from our passengers through the Airport Service Quality survey, and for the fifth year running, we ranked among the top European airports in our size category.

Looking at our traffic and financial results for 2022, it is almost difficult to believe that only two years ago traffic through Malta International Airport was reduced to a trickle and our financial statements were in the red. The solid traffic and financial results for 2022 were not achieved by chance but because of timely decisions together with the collective effort of our dedicated employees.

Meta nħares lejn ir-riżultati finanzjarji u l-movimenti tal-passiġġieri għas-sena 2022, kważi nsibha diffiċli biex nemmen li sa sentejn ilu, it-traffiku fl-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta kien kważi spiċċa fix-xejn u konna għalaqna s-sena bla profitt. Irriżultati b’saħħithom li ksibna fl-2022, kemm dawk li għandhom x’jaqsmu mat-traffiku tal-passiġġieri u anke dawk finanzjarji, ma ġewx b’kumbinazzjoni imma kienu frott deċiżjonijiet f’waqthom flimkien mal-impenn kollettiv tal-impjegati tagħna.

While we promise to continue working towards the achievement of better results that translate to better shareholder value, we shall also continue striving to be a company that stands for more than just profits. I believe that through our sustainability report, which has been published every year since 2016, and initiatives related to energy, waste and water management, we have established ourselves as local leaders in terms of more environmentally responsible operations. Besides auditing our financials for 2022, our independent auditors also verified key performance indicators related to the abovementioned action areas. I am immensely proud to say that we achieved the carbon dioxide emissions per passenger and landfill waste per passenger targets we set out to reach at the beginning of 2022. While we have been tracking our emissions for the last seven years, the landfill waste per passenger target was introduced last year following stepped-up waste-separation efforts.

In fact, a significant stride in our journey towards net-zero status was the start of a series of stakeholder engagement meetings in January, during which we kicked off the conversation about carbon footprint mapping with our ground handlers, outlet operators, cleaning and security services providers to name but a few. I believe that, if we are to continue being a credible and relevant company whose successes extend beyond strong financial statements, the path of sustainability is the only path we should be on.

Investimenti oħra, inkluża l-kostruzzjoni ta’ SkyParks 2 u l-lukanda biswit, se jkunu qed isaħħu dak l-operat kummerċjali tagħna li mhuwiex marbut direttament malavjazzjoni u li fl-2022 kważi ġġenera 34 fil-mija tad-dħul li għamlet il-kumpanija. Bis-saħħa ta’ dawn ir-riżultati stajna nirrakkomandaw ukoll il-ħlas ta’ dividend lill-azzjonisti tagħna li se jkun jammonta għal €0.12-il ċenteżmu wara t-taxxa. It-tim li jieħu ħsieb

ir-relazzjoni mal-investituri jinfurmani kontinwament dwar il-mistoqsijiet u l-interess tal-azzjonisti tagħna u jimlieni b’kuraġġ il-fatt li fhimtu u anke appoġġjajtu d-deċiżjonijiet, ħafna drabi diffiċli, li kellna nieħdu fl-aħħar tliet snin. Filwaqt li nwegħdukom li se nkomplu nirsistu biex niksbu l-aħjar riżultati li jkomplu jsaħħu l-valur tal-ishma tagħna, ser nibqgħu naħdmu biex ma nkunux kumpanija li jimpurtaha biss mill-profitti. Nemmen li permezz tar-rapport tassostenibbiltà, li ilna nippubblikaw kull sena mill-2016, u anke bis-saħħa ta’ inizjattivi li għandhom x’jaqsmu mal-enerġija u l-immaniġġjar tal-iskart u l-ilma, sirna pijuniera lokali f’dak li għandu x’jaqsam ma’ operat responsabbli u sostenibbli. Lil hinn mill-awditjar finanzjarju għall-2022, l-awdituri indipendenti vverifikaw ukoll indikaturi importanti fl-oqsma msemmija hawn fuq. Kburi ngħid li ksibna l-miri li poġġejna quddiemna fil-bidu tal-2022 biex innaqqsu l-emissjonijiet tad-diossidu tal-karbonju u anke l-iskart mormi fil-landfills, liema miri huma kkalkulati skont l-għadd ta’ passiġġieri li jgħaddu mill-ajruport. Filwaqt li ilna għal dawn l-aħħar seba’ snin naħdmu biex innaqqsu l-emissjonijiet għal kull passiġġier, is-sena li għaddiet introduċejna l-mira li nnaqqsu wkoll l-iskart li jintrema fil-landfills, bħala parti mill-isforzi tagħna biex nimmaniġġjaw u nisseparaw aħjar l-iskart. Filwaqt li fl-2020 waqqafna d-Dipartiment tas-Sostenibbiltà u sena wara stabbilixxejna wkoll Grupp ta’ Ħidma favur l-Ambjent sabiex ikollna direzzjoni aħjar għall-istrateġija dwar is-sostenibbiltà tagħna, l-inizjattivi favur l-ambjent mhumiex biss ir-responsabbiltà ta’ ftit impjegati. Fil-fatt, pass importanti f’dan il-vjaġġ tagħna biex eventwalment nilħqu n-newtralità karbonika, huma s-sensiela ta’ laqgħat li bdejna f’Jannar ma’ dawk kollha li joperaw fl-ajruport. F’dawn il-laqgħat bdejna niltaqgħu u niddiskutu l-miri ambjentali tagħna mal-istakeholders kollha, fosthom mal-ground handlers, l-operaturi talħwienet, il-kumpanija li tforni s-servizzi tas-sigurtà u dawk responsabbli mit-tindif. Nemmen li jekk irridu li nibqgħu kumpanija kredibbli u rilevanti fid-dinja tal-lum, għandna nirsistu sabiex inkomplu mexjin f’din it-triq li qbadna li għandha twassalna għal aktar suċċessi sostenibbli.

Il-Messaġġ tal-Kap Eżekuttiv

Message from the CEO

Our results have also put us in a position to recommend the payment of a dividend to our shareholders amounting to €0.12 cents per share net of tax. Our investor relations team updates me frequently on the calls and queries received from our shareholders, and it has been most encouraging to have your understanding and support for the decisions– very often difficult–taken over the last three years.

While we established the Sustainability Department in 2020 and the Environmental Working Group a year later to drive our sustainability strategy, initiatives that safeguard the planet are not solely the responsibility of a handful of employees.

Minkejja li l-attività ekonomika globali qed issibha diffiċli biex tirkupra u minkejja sfidi oħra, dawn ir-riżultati jagħtuna s-serħan il-moħħ li l-agħar żmien għadda. Hu proprju għalhekk li konna f’pożizzjoni li nħabbru investiment ta’ €175 miljun li permezz tiegħu l-pubbliku se jara bidliet kbar flajruport. Waħedhom, uħud mill-proġetti jistgħu ma jidhrux daqshekk impressjonanti, iżda flimkien ma’ investimenti oħra se jissarrfu f’titjib sostanzjali fl-esperjenza tal-passiġġieri u l-viżitaturi fl-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta.

|

These results have given us the reassurance that, despite the slowing global economic activity and other challenges, the worst is now behind us, leading us to announce our €175 million investment in the airport campus. While some of the projects that will be executed as part of this vision may not appear impressive in isolation, taken together with several other investments, they are set to bring about substantial improvements to the guest experience at Malta International Airport. Other investments, such as the construction of SkyParks 2 and a business hotel, will be undertaken to further strengthen our thriving non-aviation segment, which accounted for almost 34 per cent of the revenues generated by the group in 2022.

The Traffic Round-up for 2022

A promising start to 2023 and the way ahead The winter 2022/2023 season continued on a promising note, with January 2023 becoming the first month since February 2020 to exceed 2019 traffic levels. 379,335 passenger movements were registered in January 2023, marking an increase in traffic of 3.6 per cent compared to the same month in 2019. However, this total did not surpass the traffic handled in January 2020 shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic started wreaking havoc on passenger numbers.

While September brought the peak summer season to a close, the demand for air travel remained very strong in the last quarter of 2022, as indicated by exceptionally high seat load factors (SLF) ranging between 81 per cent in December and 86 per cent in October. Seat load factors that exceeded their respective 2019 levels were recorded each month between May and December 2022. The last quarter of the year registered an average recovery rate of 86 per cent, with the months of November (88.0 per cent) and December (88.3 per cent) achieving the year’s strongest recoveries.

12 markets outperform their 2019 results, others lag behind Throughout 2022, Malta International Airport was connected to 36 markets through the services offered by 31 airlines. Two of these airlines resumed scheduled operations during the year in question following a pandemic-induced hiatus. The most popular five markets for the year were Italy, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland.

L-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta jimmira li jospita 6.3 miljun passiġġier fl-2023 F’Novembru 2022 l-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta ħareġ tbassir tat-traffiku rivedut ta’ 5.7 miljun passiġġier sal-aħħar tas-sena. Dan it-tbassir mhux talli ntlaħaq iżda talli nqabeż ukoll, bil-kumpanija tirrapporta li t-traffiku għall-2022 kien laħħaq il-5.8 miljun moviment tal-passiġġieri, jiġifieri rkupru ta’ 80% tat-traffiku rekord fis-sena 2019. Din ir-rata ta’ rkupru kienet l-istess bħall-medja Ewropea ta’ 80%, u kienet ukoll kisba importanti għall-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta, speċjalment meta tqis li l-pajjiż neħħa r-restrizzjonijiet fuq l-ivjaġġar kollha tiegħu lejn l-aħħar ta’ Lulju 2022.

Exceptionally high seat load factors in Q4 2022 In the last issue of MIA Link, a detailed traffic report for the first nine months of 2022 was presented. The report revealed that following a very bleak first quarter, traffic started to gather momentum in April and eventually peaked in August with 712,122 passenger movements.

Malta International Airport is now looking ahead to the busier summer months, having already launched the flight schedule for the season. In March, the airport welcomed the first-ever flight from Memmingen in southern Germany as well as the first Aeroitalia flight from Florence. Additionally, a number of airlines will be resuming operations or increasing the number of routes offered during the summer months, which are more widely associated with travel.

Despite these promising developments and an excellent start to the year, a number of challenges stemming from deteriorating macoeconomic and geopolitical factors cannot be ignored. Such factors, together with increasing costs, could dent consumer confidence, affect flight booking windows and, consequently, decrease mediumterm visibility for airlines. At the beginning of the year, the European organisation Eurocontrol also warned that keeping summer delays in check could pose another challenge for the industry.

Fl-aħħar ħarġa ta’ MIA Link preżentajna rapport tat-traffiku dettaljat għall-ewwel disa’ xhur tal-2022. Dan ir-rapport żvela kif wara bidu tassew kajman, l-affarijiet bdew jieħdu xejra differenti f’April u komplew jitjiebu sakemm it-traffiku laħaq il-quċċata tiegħu għas-sena f’Awwissu b’712,122 moviment tal-passiġġieri rreġistrati. Filwaqt li Settembru ġab l-aqwa tas-sajf fi tmiemu, id-domanda għall-ivjaġġar bl-ajru baqgħet waħda b’saħħitha ferm anke fl-aħħar kwart tas-sena. Dan jixhduh seat load factors tassew għoljin, li kienu jvarjaw bejn 81% f’Diċembru u 86% f’Ottubru. Is-seat load factors tax-xhur bejn Mejju u Diċembru 2022 kollha sebqu l-livelli li kienu ġew irreġistrati fl-2019. L-aħħar kwart tas-sena kellu rata medja ta’ rkupru ta’ 86%, bix-xhur ta’ Novembru (88%) u Diċembru (88.3%) jiksbu l-ogħla żewġ rati ta’ rkupru tas-sena 2022. (ikompli fuq il-paġna li jmiss)

Rapport tat-Traffiku Dettaljat għall-2022

As Malta International Airport eyes the 6.3 million passenger mark for 2023, here is a look at some of the trends that were observed in 2022 and the way ahead.

|

This recovery rate was in line with to the average recovery of 80 per cent registered by European airports, and a considerable achievement for Malta International Airport, given that Malta only shrugged off all travel restrictions for incoming passengers towards the end of July 2022.

Out of these top five markets, France and Poland performed better than they had in 2019, registering an increase in passenger traffic of 26 per cent and 34 per cent respectively. Besides these two markets, another 10 markets (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Luxembourg, Romania and Serbia) outperformed the results they had achieved in 2019. Other markets, including Italy, Turkey and Switzerland, registered solid performances with recovery rates that exceeded the 91 per cent mark, while the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium were three of the laggards whose recovery rates were lower than 67 per cent.

MIA Link March 2023 Issue No. 27

In November 2022, Malta International Airport issued an updated traffic forecast of 5.7 million passengers by the end of the year. This forecast was eventually surpassed, with the company reporting that the traffic for 2022 had in fact totalled 5.8 million passengers, translating to a recovery of 80 per cent of 2019’s record traffic.

The Transformation Of The Airport Campus: A LOOK AT THE COMPANY’S €175 MILLION FIVE-YEAR INVESTMENT PLAN The COVID-19 pandemic may have temporarily halted Malta International Airport’s investment plans, but now that things have stabilised the company is moving full steam ahead with its transformational five-year vision for the airport campus. The €175 million investment plan, which was announced in January 2023, encompasses several projects ranging from the mammoth Apron X investment to more modest upgrades. Collectively, these projects are set to equip Malta International Airport with future-ready digital and physical infrastructure, which will allow the company that operates the airport to eye traffic growth, maintain operational efficiency and service excellence, and achieve its sustainability targets. MIA Link takes a closer look at some of the projects that will change the airport campus by 2027.

Rapport tat-Traffiku Dettaljat għall-2022

Ħarsa lejn il-prestazzjoni tas-swieq fl-2022

8

Matul l-2022, wieħed seta’ jtir lejn 36 suq differenti permezz ta’ titjiriet offruti minn 31 linja tal-ajru mill-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta. Tnejn minn dawn il-linji tal-ajru reġgħu bdew joffru titjiriet skedati minn Malta fl-2022 wara li kienu waqqfu s-servizzi tagħhom minħabba l-pandemija. L-aqwa ħamest iswieq għas-sena kienu l-Italja, ir-Renju Unit, Franza, il-Ġermanja u l-Polonja. Minn fost dawn il-ħamest iswieq, Franza u l-Polonja kellhom prestazzjoni ferm aħjar mill-2019, fejn is-suq tal-ewwel irreġistra tkabbir ta’ 26% u l-Polonja rreġistrat tkabbir ta’ 34%. Iżda ma kinux dawn is-swieq biss li raw żieda fil-passiġġieri fuq l-2019, hekk kif għaxart iswieq oħrajn (l-Awstrija, il-Bulgarija, Ċipru, l-Estonja, il-Greċja, il-Kroazja, il-Lussemburgu, ir-Rumanija, is-Serbja u l-Ungerija) ukoll sebqu r-riżultati li kienu kisbu qabel il-pandemija. Minnaħa l-oħra, swieq bħall-Italja, ir-Turkija u l-Isvizzera kollha kellhom prestazzjonijiet tajbin fejn laħqu rati ta’ rkupru ta’ ’l fuq minn 91%, filwaqt li ċerti swieq oħrajn, bħar-Renju Unit, il-Ġermanja u l-Belġju, kellhom rati ta’ rkupru baxxi ta’ anqas minn 67%.

Bidu tajjeb għas-sena u ħarsa ‘l quddiem L-istaġun tax-xitwa 2022/2023 kompla jiżviluppa b’mod inkoraġġanti, b’Jannar 2023 ikun l-ewwel xahar sa minn Frar 2020 li qabeż iċ-ċifri li kienu ntlaħqu fl-2019. F’Jannar 2023

ġew irreġistrati 379,335 moviment tal-passiġġieri, jiġifieri żieda ta’ 3.6% fuq l-istess xahar fl-2019. Madankollu, dan it-total ma qabiżx it-traffiku li kien ġie ġestit f’Jannar 2020 ftit qabel il-pandemija tal-COVID-19 bdiet tħalli l-impatt tagħha fuq l-ivjaġġar. L-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta issa qiegħed jipprepara għall-jiem aktar impenjattivi tas-sajf u diġà nieda l-iskeda ta’ titjiriet għall-istaġun. F’Marzu l-ajruport laqa’ l-ewwel titjira minn Memmingen fin-Nofsinhar tal-Ġermanja kif ukoll l-ewwel titjira operata minn Aeroitalia minn Firenze. Għadd ta’ linji tal-ajru li joperaw minn Malta ser ikunu qegħdin jerġgħu jibdew l-operat tagħhom jew iżidu r-rotot li joffru għall-istaġun tas-sajf, li huwa aktar sinonimu malivjaġġar u l-btajjel. Minkejja dawn l-iżviluppi pożittivi u bidu tassew b’saħħtu għas-sena, ma jistgħux jiġu injorati għadd ta’ sfidi li huma riżultat ta’ fatturi makroekonomiċi u ġeopolitiċi li qegħdin jiddeterjoraw. Fatturi bħal dawn, flimkien ma’ prezzijiet li qegħdin jiżdiedu, jistgħu jħallu impatt fuq il-kunfidenza tal-konsumatur u jaffettwaw it-tieqa bejn ix-xiri ta’ biljett u titjira b’konsegwenza għall-viżibbiltà fit-tul tal-linji tal-ajru. Fil-bidu tas-sena, l-organizzazzjoni Ewropea Eurocontrol wissiet ukoll li l-industrija tista’ terġa’ taffaċċja l-isfida ta’ dewmien fit-tluq tat-titjiriet dan is-sajf.

Verani will soon open its doors to guests at departures.

From the second quarter of the year, incoming tourists will be met by the quaint local cafeteria Tat-Te upon stepping into the Arrivals Hall. Without revealing too much about this exciting addition to the airport’s food and beverage offering, the outlet will create a sense of place through its design, particularly the wrought iron railing along the shopfront, and the selection of local treats it will be offering. In the meantime, at departures, another new eatery is gradually taking shape behind hoarding. The eatery, which will be equipped with a fully fledged kitchen, will offer dinein options as well as a selection of grab-and-go snacks for passengers who do not have the luxury to sit down and enjoy a proper meal prior to boarding.

The TransformationOf The Airport Campus: A Look At The Company’s €175 Million Five-Year Investment Plan

By the second quarter of the year, coinciding with the start of the busier summer season, the customs area will have been extended to occupy double its current footprint, significantly increasing the circulation space at this point of the airport journey and the area where customs checks are conducted. Increased capacity apart, the area will don a more modern aesthetic that is expected to contribute greatly to the improved experience being promised to guests.

THE VIP TERMINAL OVERHAUL

THE CONSTRUCTION OF SKYPARKS 2

The company’s investment will not be limited to the main terminal building but will be extended to the VIP terminal, which is a separate building that is used by paying guests seeking added privacy and comfort as they travel. Through this planned overhaul, the VIP terminal will benefit from a reimagined design prioritising natural light together with a number of courtyards and terraces that will allow guests to soak up the sunshine. Beyond aesthetics, the capacity of the terminal, whose popularity increased after the COVID-19 pandemic, will be improved by leaps and bounds through the construction of a new storey.

SkyParks 2 will offer more retail and office space together with a hotel, and is expected to further strengthen the company’s retail and property portfolio. A number of contractors who responded to a call for expressions of interest in the project have already been shortlisted, with the winning contractor expected to be chosen following the submission of proposals in February 2023. In preparation for the development of this mixed-purpose building, the fuel station that is in the area is being relocated and upgraded in line with the European Union’s requirements.

It-Trasformazzjoni Tal-Ajruport:

Put end to end, the two runways would stretch for almost six kilometres, which is close to the length of the channel that separates Malta and Gozo. This rehabilitation project is a massive undertaking not only due to the vast outdoor areas involved but also because the pressure to keep within the established deadlines will be high in order to avoid disruptions. The larger investment, however, is the construction of a completely new apron: Apron X. The Apron X project will improve the airport’s aircraft parking capacity and ability to handle mixed-fleet operations through the introduction of new parking stands that can accommodate seven Code C or three Code E aircraft. Excavation works kicked off towards the end of 2022, and further major excavations will be carried out throughout 2023, with the aim of having the first parking stands ready by summer 2024 and the full project completed by 2025. However, this project is much more than a capacityboosting investment. The Apron X project will also support Malta International Airport in honouring its environmental commitments through the construction of a reservoir for better rainwater harvesting and the installation of LED floodlighting systems. The project will also include preparatory works for the electrification of parking stands,

in line with Article 12 of the European Union’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions Fit for 55. Indeed, the airfield provides plenty of opportunities for sustainability-related investments, from the gradual replacement of lighting units illuminating the aprons and runways with LED alternatives, to massive open spaces that can accommodate hundreds of photovoltaic panels. While the company embarked on its airfield lightingreplacement programme two years ago and expects to close it off by 2025, preparatory works on a new photovoltaic farm will start later this year. Once commissioned, this farm is expected to increase Malta International Airport’s clean energy generation capacity from 30% to 70%.

THE MAIN TERMINAL BUILDING’S WESTWARD EXTENSION Back to the terminal building and another noteworthy project that will commence towards the end of 2023, officially kicking off the first phase of the Terminal Expansion. The westward extension of the terminal building will equip Malta International Airport with the space needed to install the infrastructure required to manage the arrival of thirdcountry nationals as part of the EU’s Entry-Exit System, which is expected to be rolled out after summer 2023. The 1,550-metre westward extension will also allow for the introduction of a second route leading guests arriving from Schengen countries straight to the baggage reclaim area as well as the enlargement of this area to accommodate two new belts by summer 2024.

Sadanittant, fis-sala tat-tluq, għaddej ix-xogħol fuq stabbiliment ieħor ġdid. Dan l-istabbiliment se jkun qed joffri menù varjat, kemm għal dawk li jkollhom biżżejjed ċans biex ipoġġu u jieklu xi ħaġa u kemm għal oħrajn li jkunu magħfusa bil-ħin u jkunu jixtiequ jixtru xi ħaġa malajr qabel ma jitilgħu fuq l-ajruplan.

X’INHU GĦADDEJ FUQ IL-MITJAR? Il-manutenzjoni tal-infrastruttura tal-mitjar hija importanti daqs l-investiment fil-binja tat-terminal.

Beyond being a hub of theatres, shops, restaurants and bars, Valletta is synoymous with priceless works of art that embellish its every corner and edifice, including the capital’s many churches. One such trove of art and architecture is undoubtedly the Church of Saint Mary of Jesus, which is better known by locals as Ta’ Ġieżu. Located on one of Valletta’s iconic streets of stairs, the church, particularly its miraculous Crucifix and the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, draws devout locals throughout the year. MIA Link spoke with Valentina Lupo, from the company Atelier del Restauro, about the restoration and conservation that will be carried out on the fourteen paintings that make up the Way of the Cross found inside this church. This project is being supported by the Malta Airport Foundation.

A New Lease of Life for The Way of the Cross at Ta’ Ġieżu

The start of the dismounting process in January 2023.

The importance of the Way of the Cross at Ta’ Ġieżu The fourteen paintings making up the Way of the Cross or the Via Sagra, which portray a series of events in the Passion of Christ, are nowadays found in every church and chapel. The devotional practice of the Way of the Cross originated in Jerusalem along the Via Dolorosa, the way that Christ followed carrying the cross from Pilate’s praetorium to Calvary. This processional route draws hundreds of pilgrims to retrace Jesus’s footsteps whilst meditating every year.

Fil-fatt, il-mitjar jipprovdi diversi opportunitajiet għal iżjed investimenti fi proġetti sostenibbli, mit-tibdil gradwali tad-dawl kollu fl-aprons u r-runways għal sistemi LED sa spazji miftuħa kbar li jistgħu jakkomodaw mijiet ta’ pannelli fotovoltajċi.

1,500 metru, se tkun introdotta rotta oħra biex passiġġieri li jkunu waslu minn pajjiżi fiż-żona Schengen jimxu dritt għażżona minn fejn jiġbru l-bagalji u sas-sajf 2024, fl-istess żona, ikunu jistgħu jiġu installati żewġ belts oħra.

It was the Franciscan Friars who introduced this devotion along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem when they established themselves in the Holy Land. On Friday afternoon at three, the exact hour of Christ’s death on the Cross, the Franciscans accompany the pilgrims along this way, stopping at fourteen stations. Wherever the Franciscan Friars established themselves, they began to erect the stations of the Cross in their own churches and introduced the devotional practice of the Way of the Cross.

The Franciscan Church of Ta’ Ġieżu in Valletta, built in 1575 close to Porta del Monte (Victoria Gate), soon became a centre of devotion towards the Passion of Christ, particularly with the establishment of the Archconfraternity of the Holy Cross in 1646 and the placing of the venerated Crucifix, called by the faithful “il-Kurċifiss mirakoluż Ta’ Ġieżu”. The devotion to the stations of the Passion was also strong during the Fridays of Lent, dedicated to the five sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary, with devotional processions which culminated in the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows and in the Good Friday procession along the streets of Valletta. These devotions resulted from the close connection between Malta and the Holy Land. During the period of the Order of the Knights of St John, many Franciscan missionaries to the Holy Land would stop over in Malta at the Hospitium Terrae Sanctae in the Valletta friary, in order to board one of the vessels bound to the East. They brought with them many devotional practices, including the Via Crucis, locally known as the Via Sagra.

Lupo explained that the process will kick off with the documentation of each one of the fourteen paintings as well as their decorative frames. During this stage of the process, different methods will be used, including examination under UV light, with the aim of putting together documentation that is as detailed as possible and establishing the state of conservation of the paintings and their frames. This first stage forms the basis for a detailed plan for the rest of the restoration and conservation process.

A New Lease of Life for The Way of the Cross at Ta’ Ġieżu

We do not have specific information regarding the establishment of the stations of the Via Crucis in the Franciscan Ta’ Ġieżu church, but without doubt this was the first church that witnessed this devotion on the Maltese Islands. The establishment of the stations of the Cross in this church can be traced at least to the first half of the eighteenth century. The paintings of the scenes of the Passion are encased in Baroque sculptured frames. The ones we see today are the work of the artist Abram Gatt (1863-1944).

Lupo went on to explain that, following the documentation, the paintings will be disinfested, or in more technical terms receive anoxic treatment, to address any possible insect infestation present. Once the abovementioned steps are conducted, cleaning tests that are aimed towards removing the oxidised varnish coating and any layers of overpainting that could have been applied over the years are carried out. Each step of the way is documented through photography to leave as much information as possible to researchers and future restorers.

What’s the difference between restoration and conservation? Valentina Lupo explained that restoration and conservation are two very distinct procedures which complement one another.

A New Lease of Life for The Way of the Cross at Ta’ Ġieżu

Conservation entails efforts to protect works of art from any future damage or deterioration. In the case of the Way of the Cross project, this will be achieved mainly through disinfestation to remove any insects which could be causing damage.

16

“OUR ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO TO CARRY OUT RESTORATION INTERVENTIONS THAT REESTABLISH THE PAINTINGS’ APPEARANCE AS WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDED BY THE ARTISTS. WE ALSO HOPE THAT THIS PROJECT STIRS MORE INTEREST IN THE DEVOTION TO THE WAY OF THE CROSS AND ITS HISTORY IN MALTA,” Valentina Lupo, Lead Restorer

Restoration, on the other hand, involves repair and renovation works on paintings that would have already sustained damage in order to reveal, as much a possible, an artwork’s original look. In the case of the Way of the Cross, the restoration will include the reintegration of any losses on the canvas support and the pictorial layers and the reconstruction of the frames’ missing parts.

The Malta Airport Foundation’s support

The first historical discovery of the project

This project is not a first for the Malta Airport Foundation. Between 2021 and 2022, the Foundation supported restoration and conservation works that were carried out on Mattia Preti’s Saints Roque, Blaise, Dominic and Nicholas of Tolentino Interceding for the Plague Stricken, which hangs inside the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Żurrieq.

Valentina Lupo told MIA Link that beyond the actual restoration and conservation, this project is expected to shed more light on this particular Way of the Cross, about which very little information exists at present. She continued to explain that upon looking closer at the paintings it becomes evident that the fourteen paintings were executed by a number of different artists, with the technique employed and the colours used varying from one station to the next. This is quite common in cases where we have a series of paintings commissioned by different benefactors. As the first four paintings were being dismounted in January 2023, the first interesting discovery was made on the verso of one them, which bore the inscription: “Joannes Columba

The Malta Airport Foundation is supporting this project financially, ensuring that the Franciscan community has access to the resources that are essential for the restoration and conservation works to be carried out as well as the equally important scientific tests that can shed more light on these paintings.

Terġa’ tingħata l-ħajja l-Via Sagra storika f’Ta’ Ġieżu Il-Belt Valletta hija magħrufa mhux biss għad-divertiment li toffri imma anke għax-xogħlijiet tal-arti imprezzabbli li jżejnu kull rokna tagħha, inklużi l-knejjes storiċi li huma sinonimi mat-toroq twal u dritti tal-Kapitali. Bla dubju, waħda minn dawn il-knejjes hija dik iddedikata lil Sidtna Marija ta’ Ġesù li bosta jafuha aħjar bħala Ta’ Ġieżu. Mibnija fi triq imtarrġa li tagħti għall-veduta tal-Port il-Kbir, din il-knisja hija magħrufa għad-devozzjoni lejn il-Passjoni tal-Mulej, partikolarment minħabba x-xbihat tal-Kurċifiss mirakoluż u ta’ Marija Addolorata li jiġbdu lejhom eluf ta’ devoti kull sena. MIA Link tkellmet ma’ Valentina Lupo mill-kumpanija Atelier del Restauro, dwar ir-restawr u l-konservazzjoni tal-erbatax-il pittura tal-Via Sagra li wieħed isib f’din l-istess knisja, liema proġett qed isir bl-appoġġ tal-Malta Airport Foundation.

L-importanza tal-Via Sagra f’Ta’ Ġieżu Min hu midħla tal-knejjes jaf li f’kull knisja u kappella wieħed isib erbatax-il pittura magħrufa bħala Via Sagra (jew Via Crucis) li jfakkru erbatax-il mument mill-Passjoni ta’ Ġesù Kristu. Id-devozzjoni lejn il-Via Sagra tmur lura mijiet ta’ snin u oriġinat f’Ġerusalemm f’dik imsejħa bħala l-Via Dolorosa, it-triq minn fejn skont it-tradizzjoni, għadda Kristu mgħobbi bis-salib mingħand Pilatu sal-għolja tal-Kalvarju. Sa millewwel żminijiet tal-Knisja, bosta kienu l-pellegrini li kienu jimxu f’din it-triq waqt li jimmeditaw il-Passjoni.

Kienu l-Patrijiet Franġiskani li kabbru din id-devozzjoni meta stabbilixxew ruħhom bħala l-Kustodji tal-Art Imqaddsa u sal-lum il-ġurnata għadhom jorganizzaw din il-Via Sagra, fl-istess triq, nhar ta’ Ġimgħa fit-3 ta’ waranofsinhar.Kull fejn marru l-Franġiskani, ħadu magħhom din id-devozzjoni u bdew iwaqqfu l-istazzjonijiet tal-Via Sagra fil-knejjes tagħhom. For the decorative frames, a conservative approach is generally recommended. This means that the restorer will clean and integrate the gilded layer only on the losses present by applying 23,75K gold leaf using the water gilding technique.

Lupo explained that it is very likely that the restoration and conservation processes reveal further similar information. More information regarding the artists’ manufacturing technique will be revealed after the cleaning of the paintings is carried out, allowing the restorers to see the original colour as well as study the period of execution, which could possibly lead to uncovering the artists’ identities.

Losses, if any are discovered, are then then consolidated, infilled and reintegrated using conservation grade materials, in order to reestablish structural cohesion and the visual unity of the paintings. Finally, a protective coating is applied to the surface of the paintings to safeguard these works of art from the elements.

“At this point, the most suitable and least invasive methodology is selected. The cleaning phase can reveal details that could have been concealed by overpainting, allowing us to see the original state of the painting as the artists intended,” explained the restorer.

Lupo spjegat kif il-proċess se jibda bid-dokumentazzjoni tal-pitturi waħda waħda u anke tal-gwarniċi tagħhom. F’dan il-proċess jintużaw metodi differenti, inkluż id-dawl UV, bil-għan li d-dokumentazzjoni tkun tinkludi kemm jista’ jkun informazzjoni u jkun jista’ jiġi ddeterminat l-istat tal-konservazzjoni tal-pitturi u l-gwarniċi. Eventwalment, dan il-proċess iwassal biex jitfassal pjan dettaljat għarrestawr u l-konservazzjoni.

Lupo kompliet tispjega kif il-pass li jmiss ikun iddiżinfestazzjoni (Anoxia), biex titneħħa kull infestazzjoni ta’ insetti, bħal susa, li jistgħu jkunu qed jagħmlu ħsara kemm lill-pitturi u anke lill-gwarniċi tagħhom. Wara dan, ikun jista’ jibda l-proċess tar-restawr innifsu billi jsir it-tindif tal-pitturi u ftit ftit titneħħa l-qoxra tal-verniċ u anke żebgħa żejda li jista’ jkun li tkun ġiet applikata tul issnin fuq it-tila. “Hawn jintuża l-inqas metodu invażiv possibbli. Dan ilproċess ta’ tindif possibbilment jikxef dettalji li jkunu ġew mgħottija b’żebgħa żejda li tkun ġiet applikata tul is-snin u b’hekk inkunu nistgħu naraw il-pitturi fl-istat oriġinali tagħhom, kif ħoloqhom l-artist,” spjegat ir-restawratriċi. Il-pass li jmiss ikun il-konsolidament ta’ dawk il-partijiet mitlufa, b’Lupo tisħaq li l-materjal kollu li jintuża anke f’dan l-istadju huwa materjal apposta għall-konservazzjoni u jkun wieħed riversibbli. Fl-aħħar nett, fuq il-wiċċ tal-pittura, issir kisja protettiva b’materjal apposta li jgħin fil-konservazzjoni tal-pitturi u l-protezzjoni mill-elementi. Fejn jidħlu l-gwarniċi, l-enfasi tkun aktar fuq il-konservazzoni milli r-restawr. Fil-fatt mhux se tkun qed issir induratura ġdida. Minflok, spjegat Lupo, ir-restawraturi jnaddfu

X’inhi d-differenza bejn ir-restawr u l-konservazzjoni? Valentina Lupo spjegat kif ir-restawr u l-konservazzjoni huma distinti minn xulxin iżda jaħdmu id f’id. Fi kliemha, il-konservazzjoni tinkludi l-ħarsien u l-protezzjoni tax-xogħlijiet tal-arti minn ħsara jew deterjorazzjoni futura. F’dan il-każ partikolari, il-konservazzjoni se ssir permezz tad-diżinfestazzjoni biex jitneħħew insetti li jistgħu jkunu qed jagħmlu l-ħsara. Ir-restawr, mill-banda l-oħra, huwa dak kollu li għandu x’jaqsam mat-tiswija u r-rinovar tax-xogħlijiet tal-arti bilgħan li dawn, kemm jista’ jkun, jingħataw id-dehra oriġinali tagħhom. Fil-każ tal-Via Sagra ta’ Ġieżu, ir-restawr se jkun jinkludi t-tiswija u l-integrazzjoni mill-ġdid tal-partijiet mitlufa tal-pitturi u r-rikostruzzjoni tal-biċċiet mitlufa mill-gwarniċi. Il-knisja Ta’ Ġieżu minn barra.

L-ewwel erba’ pitturi mill-Via Sagra f’Ta’ Ġieżu nqalgħu f’Jannar 2023 sabiex ikun jista’ jibda l-proċess ta’ konservazzjoni u restawr.

L-ewwel sejba storika ta’ dan il-proġett Lil hinn mir-restawr u l-konservazzjoni, Valentina Lupo qalet ma’ MIA Link li dan il-proċess jista’ jitfa’ aktar dawl storiku fuq din il-Via Sagra, anke għax dwarha ftit teżisti informazzjoni. Kompliet tispjega li mal-ewwel daqqa t’għajn huwa ċar li dawn l-erbatax-il pittura huma xogħol artisti differenti. Itteknika użata, id-daqs tal-personaġġi u anke l-kuluri jvarjaw minn stazzjon għall-ieħor. Din hija xi ħaġa komuni ħafna meta jkollok sensiela ta’ pitturi li jkunu ġew ikkummissjonati minn benefatturi differenti. Meta wara diversi snin, f’Jannar 2023, dawn il-pitturi bdew jinqalgħu mill-korsija tal-knisja, biex jittieħdu għar-restawr, saret l-ewwel sejba storika hekk kif fuq wara ta’ waħda minn dawn il-pitturi nstabet skrizzjoni li tgħid: “Joannes Columba Melitensis fecit sumbtibus Dominus Jacobbus Gini 1738.” Din l-iskrizzjoni tat id-dettalji ta’ min pitter din il-pittura, min ikkummissjona lill-artist u s-sena li fiha saret. Lupo spjegat kif il-probabbiltà hija li l-proċess ta’ restawr u konservazzjoni se jiżvela aktar informazzjoni simili. Fil-fatt, hekk kif il-proċess tat-tindif jikxef l-istat oriġinali tal-pittura, se jkun jista’ jsir aktar studju fuq it-teknika u l-kuluri użati u dan jista’ jitfa’ aktar dawl u saħansitra jidentifika l-artisti li pittruhom. Mhux eskluż li fost dawn l-artisti hemm uħud millaqwa pitturi ta’ żmien l-Ordni ta’ San Ġwann.

“IT-TIR TAGĦNA HUWA LI NERĠGĦU NAGĦTU LIL DAWN IL-PITTURI D-DEHRA LI RIEDU GĦALIHOM L-ARTISTI. NITTAMAW UKOLL LI DAN IX-XOGĦOL JIĠBED AKTAR ATTENZJONI LEJN IDDEVOZZJONI TAL-VIA SAGRA U L-ISTORJA TAGĦHA F’MALTA,” Valentina Lupo, Restawratriċi

Is-sehem tal-Malta Airport Foundation Il-Malta Airport Foundation qiegħda tappoġġja dan ilproġett b’mod finanzjarju billi tassigura li l-komunità Franġiskana jkollha mhux biss ir-riżorsi kollha meħtieġa għar-restawr u l-konservazzjoni ta’ dawn il-pitturi u l-gwarniċi tagħhom, imma anke twettaq it-testijiet kollha xjentifiċi li hemm bżonn biex jitfgħu aktar dawl fuq l-oriġini u l-importanza ta’ din il-Via Sagra. Dan mhuwiex l-ewwel proġett li permezz tiegħu l-Malta Airport Foundation se tkun qed tiffaċilita r-restawr ta’ xogħlijiet tal-arti fi knejjes Maltin. Fl-aħħar snin, ilFondazzjoni daħlet għar-restawr ta’ pittura mdaqqsa li l-artist ċelebri Mattia Preti pitter għall-Knisja Arċipretali ta’ Santa Katarina taż-Żurrieq fl-1676. Din il-pittura turi lil Santu Rokku, San Bjaġju, San Duminku u San Nikola ta’ Tolentino jinterċedu għal Malta fi żmien il-pesta.

Terġa’ tingħata l-ħajja l-Via Sagra storika f’Ta’ Ġieżu

L-istazzjonijiet tal-Via Sagra f’din il-knisja jissemmew għallewwel darba f’dokumenti tal-ewwel nofs tas-seklu tmintax. Il-pitturi nfushom saru minn artisti differenti u l-gwarniċi barokki li jżejnu din il-Via Sagra llum, huma xogħol l-artist Abram Gatt (1863-1944).

Kull pass ta’ dan il-proċess ikun dokumetat permezz tarritratti biex tingħata kemm jista’ jkun informazzjoni kemm għar-riċerkaturi u anke għal xogħlijiet oħra ta’ restawr u konservazzjoni li jsiru fil-futur.

|

Għalhekk ma setax jonqos li din il-knisja jkollha l-Via Sagra tagħha, liema devozzjoni ġabuha magħhom dawk il-missjunarji Franġiskani li fi żmien l-Ordni ta’ San Ġwann kienu jieqfu f’dan il-kunvent qabel ma jaqbdu l-bastimenti fi triqithom lejn l-Art Imqaddsa. Minħabba dan il-fatt, wieħed jista’ jgħid b’ċertezza li din il-knisja kienet pijuniera fiddevozzjoni lejn il-Via Sagra f’Malta.

l-induratura eżistenti u japplikaw folji tad-deheb 23,75K f’dawk il-partijiet li ntilfu biss. Hawn, tintuża t-teknika talinduratura bl-ilma u r-restawraturi jassiguraw li kemm jista’ jkun l-induratura l-ġdida tkun simili għal dik oriġinali.

While the number of deals in the airport’s equity was significantly lower than that of 2021, at 456 trades (700 in 2021), the number of shares that changed hands in the said deals was not far off from the levels of 2021, at 651,522 shares (2021: 687,379). The value of the 2021 trades amounted to just over €3.8 million. The airport’s equity was most active on the Malta Stock Exchange in April and May, where in both months, across 54 trades each, nearly 1.2 million shares changed hands,

representing over 31% of the year’s total shares traded. On the other hand, the slowest month was that of January where only 180,702 shares exchanged hands across 26 deals. In its announcement of the December 2022 traffic result, providing also an overview of the previous year, the airport operator reported that it handled a total of 5.8 million passengers during the year, which is equivalent to 80% of the record traffic MIA handled in 2019 (pre-COVID). This indicates an encouraging level of recovery at Malta’s only airport. Moreover, the airport operator is anticipating further improvements in passenger numbers to 6.3 million together with a further improved financial performance in 2023. This in turn is supporting the company’s share price and has contributed to the interest in MIA’s equity as the number of bids for the shares have been higher when compared to those of other listed equities.

Dan jindika livell inkoraġġanti ta’ rkupru għalluniku ajruport f’Malta. Apparti minn hekk, għas-sena 2023, l-ajruport qed jantiċipa żieda fil-moviment tal-passiġġieri, għal 6.3 miljun passiġġier u anke riżultati finanzjarji aħjar. Dan qiegħed ikompli jsaħħaħ il-prezz tal-ishma tal-kumpanija u anke jikkontribwixxi għal aktar interess fl-ishma tal-MIA hekk kif l-ammont ta’ offerti għall-istess ishma kien ogħla meta kkumparat ma’ dawk ta’ kumpaniji oħrajn imniżżlin fuq il-Borża ta’ Malta.
